lot less stressing. In keeping with a stress free environment, The Source family had a fun and interesting day out in Dubai with our lucky winners, Esli and Mohammed, to get their Splash makeover. It was remarkable to see the complete change from the ‘before’ to the ‘after’. On the subject about change, we chatted to distinguished student, Hamdan Al Ameri who gives us a brief about his philosophy on life and, how one day, he aims to build a socially responsible society in line with the vision of late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul). The South Koreans have certainly turned the ordinary into the extraordinary with recent claims of having built the world’s first toilet theme park. Successful entrepreneurs and businesses were honored at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Awards (ADCCI) ceremony held at Al Ain Rotana last week. ADDCI Director General, His Excellency Mohammed Hilal Al Muhairi and other senior officials lauded the efforts of these entrepreneurs and businesses and
acknowledged their important role in contributing to the country’s economy. The evening ended with Sheikh Mubarak Al Ameri and HE Mohammed Hilal Al Muhairi awarding outstanding employees of ADCCI-Al Ain Branch with an honorary plaque in appreciation of their continuous support and effort.
ARABIAN ZOO AND AQUARIUM ASSOCIATION
After the first Arab region’s zoo and aquarium meeting, recently held at the Danat Hotel in Al Ain, Al Ain Zoo announced the unanimous agreement by delegates from UAE, Qatar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain to establish the Arabian Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZAA). The association will provide a platform to discuss challenges and opportunities related to wildlife conservation, standards and animal welfare issues.

The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and John Hopkins Medicine International have recently appointed Stephen J. Spann, M.D., MBA as the new chief medical officer at Tawam Hospital. Dr. Spann has over 30 years experience in health care leadership positions and will bring a wealth of expertise in developing effective clinical care programs as well as broad international experience in enhancing standards of care. 175 buildings and structures in Al Ain have been demolished for violating construction rules, public safety and the city’s appearance. The operation, approved by Al Ain Municipality, was recently conducted in the city center, Zakher, Markhaniya, Al Maqam, Al Hili, Al Faqaa, Sweihan and Salamat.

FAST CASH Ambitious thieves attempted to steal an ATM machine in Al Yahar, Al Ain last week! Tying a rope to the Abu Dhabi National Bank Machine, which was unattached to the wall in a room adjacent to the bank, the thieves loaded it onto a waiting SUV before speeding off.
Luckily, Abdullah Awad Alsyari - a quick thinking Emirati, saw the events unfolding and chased the thieves until they were forced to throw the machine onto the road and head off into the desert in a bid to escape.

Emirates Road will officially be known as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road with immediate effect. The name change, which pays tribute to HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, was ordered by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

AINAWIS TRIUMPH IN GARDEN CITY Al Ain football team climbed to 8 points in the Etisalat Cup last week after a stunning 2-0 win over Al Shaab at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium. The win now sees them lie only 2 points behind group leaders Al Wahda. The first half of the match saw both teams struggle hard to get a shot on target but striker Ahmed Al Shamsi finally managed to fire home a free kick for the Ainawis after 22 minutes game time. The second half started well for Al Shaab who tried to grab an equalizer via Rodrigo. Yet, it was to be Al Ain who won the upper hand with a great shot from young Yousuf Ahmed Mousa. A number of strong counterattacks from Al Shaab were hindered by Al Ain goalkeeper, Abdullah Sultan, who had a tremendous match.

Al Ain's very own Paralympics gold medalist, Abdullah Sultan Al Aryani, was honored in Dubai at last week’s 4th edition of the Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award.
The award was presented by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council and HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the Award and President of the UAE National Olympic Committee.

Shooter Al Aryani, who won the only gold medal for the UAE in the Paralympics, was touched by the emotion of the occasion. Speaking to Gulf News, the ex-army officer said, "It’s a special day in my life". The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award is part of the long term vision of HH Sheikh Mohammad to honor both the UAE and the Arab region’s outstanding sportspersons and administrators.

GREAT START FOR UAE IN GULF CUP The UAE kicked off their Gulf Cup Campaign last week with a fantastic 3-1 win over Qatar at The Khalifa Stadium in Bahrain. The game got off to a shaky start for the Emiratis as Qatar’s Khalfan Ibrahim scored the opener after only 10 minutes game time. However, Al Ain’s very own Omar Abdulrahman grabbed the equalizer just three minutes later. UAE’s Ali Mabkhout shot another one past the keeper
before the half time whistle blew. The second half saw the UAE brimming with confidence thanks to their two goal lead. Mohammed Ahmed headed home the third and final goal for the Emirati squad to give them a clear victory and see them head to the top of Group A, following Bahrain and Oman’s 0-0 draw earlier in the day.
Al Ain Chess Club hosted the 2012 World Cities Chess Team Championship in honor of the late HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. 24 teams from across the globe participated in the competition which ended last week. The city of Hoogeven, Netherlands became World Cities Chess Champion after clinching a 2.5-1.5 point win over Baku City, Azerbaijan in the final of the knockout tournament. The city of Novi Sad, Serbia grabbed third place whilst Tashkent City, Uzbekistan took fourth. At the closing ceremony, the Hoogeven team were awarded the prestigious Sheikh Zayed Cup and given a grand prize of AED77000 by Asian Chess Federation President and Organizing Committee Chairman, HH Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah. owards the end of last year, we kicked off The Brand New You competition, in association with Splash and Tips and Toes, where we encouraged our readers to write to us and tell us why they felt like they deserved a brand new look.
After receiving hundreds of entries, we had a fairly hard time selecting a winner. In the end, we took a handful of entries, each of whom had entirely honest, amusing or heartfelt stories for why they wanted a new look, and picked our winners at random. 17-year-old Hamdan Hamed Salem Al Ameri is a young, student with a bright future ahead. A pupil at Al Dahma Model School, Hamdan has already shown great academic excellence despite his young age. His intelligence, eagerness, altruism and gentle character make him a perfect role model for today’s youth. Currently in his final year of school, Hamdan is very clear of what the future holds for him. While many of his friends are considering careers simply to secure a high salary; Hamdan has chosen a path that not many teenagers dare to tread. His aim is to build a responsible society akin to the vision of the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God rest his soul). Hamdan has already started down the path he needs to in order to achieve some of his own goals. Back in 2006, along with some friends, he formed a club called ‘utilize your time’, which aims to make youngsters more aware of social issues by allowing them to get involved in community projects. For Hamdan, this is just the beginning, “The club is special and an important part of my life”. In the future he aims to turn it into a fully fledged center providing a platform for kids to get involved in different projects, developing their social skills and responsibilities in order to, one day, turn them into fully responsible adults. In one sense, Hamdan is no different to any other teenager. He enjoys going out with his friends, loves car racing and playing outdoor games. And yet, he has something special. This young man possesses a sense of maturity that exceeds far beyond his age. While happy to spend time with his friends, for Hamdan, family always comes first. The respect and love that he has for his parents is clearly visible in his daily behavior, while the bond between himself and his siblings is undeniably strong. His sisters all adore him and his younger brother looks up to him as a strong role model. "By the grace of Allah Almighty, my family has been my support both financially and emotionally" says Hamdan. He further adds, "their ideas, suggestions, and opinions have been a great source of help in making me what I am today."
Although life has been no picnic for Hamdan and his family, they have worked together to get through any tough times. Conjuring the project, ‘Revival of life with an apple and a strawberry’ Hamdan helped put something in place that his family could use to resolve issues, overcome problems and encourage one another. Once a week, the family sit down together and discuss various issues or situations that they are going through and try to help each other find solutions. In the beginning, “there were lots of problems but we managed to fight the odd situations and, by the grace of Allah Almighty, we are enjoying the positive results", smiles the young man. Hamdan’s achievements, talent and commitment to the community have not gone unrecognized. He has won a number of prestigious awards including The Distinguished Student Award advocated by Hamdan bin Rashed Al Maktoum, The Sharjah Award for Excellence in Education and The Zayed bin Hazza bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan Award. Curious to learn a little more about him, we asked Hamdan, as a distinguished student, what his favorite subject might be? His response further demonstrated his intelligence as he explained that he strongly believes in “knowing something about everything and everything about something" thus he couldn’t specify just one favorite subject. Despite leading a busy life, Hamdan always makes time for one of his true passions; writing. At a very young age, he began writing short stories and has never looked back. Focusing on topics that are prevalent in today’s society he recently compiled a novel entitled ‘Buried Secrets’ which, in his opinion, is his best work to date. His recent submission to Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport writing contest was entitled ‘Unarmed Soldier’ and is a short story discussing the issues of transportation faced by the UAE government. Hamdan Hamed Salem Al Ameri can be a real source of inspiration to all of us. His positive energy and optimism help people around him feel empowered and he is one of the brightest young men I have ever come across who, I’m quite certain, will go on to make a huge difference in society. Always looking ahead, Hamdan explains that, right now, “I’m at a stage in life where I’m learning everything about something which will help me in the future.”

present to you a tale of a discovered treasure! My story begins when my two small children and I went to Pakistan to visit my in-laws one summer. My dear mother helped me pack to ensure that nothing got left behind. As we packed, I asked her if I could take along her paperback dictionary, a strange request indeed, but my mother was more than happy to give her permission. I tucked it away safely in my bag, asking myself, “Why did I just do that?” A month went by, and I became bored out of my skull living on the farm; the only thing to do was to look at the family cow! One day, feeling desperate for something to occupy my mind, I went rummaging around in my luggage hoping to find something, anything! My hand came across my mother’s dictionary. An idea struck me - I could READ the dictionary! So, I settled myself outside and opened it up. That was a mystical moment for me! Reading that little blue dictionary became an obsession, I couldn’t get enough! I would spend hours upon hours reading and analyzing words that I’d never seen before. Each page was a captivating adventure! After returning home, my love affair with dictionaries continued, beckoning me to know more of their history. Did you know that the first dictionary is credited to the Akkadian Empire? Tablets were discovered in Ebla (modern Syria) and dated roughly 2300 BCE. These historic tablets were written in cuneiform and contained Sumerian - Akkadian wordlists. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t until 1604, that the first purely English alphabetical dictionary - entitled’A Table Alphabeticall’-was written by English teacher Robert Cawdrey. And one more thing; have you ever wondered why British spelling is so different from American? Well, we have Mr. Noah Webster to thank for that. It was his edition of the English dictionary that changed it all. In all, 25 years have passed since my mother gave me that little blue book; a cherished treasure that travels with me from place to place. The pages are now yellow and frail, the binding taped over and over in attempt to keep it together. Occasionally, I take my tattered treasure into the class so students can see first-hand the token of my favorite little love story. Woe is me! If only we could help today’s generation to fall in love with words, as I did that day!

It’s the perfect time to reflect and reassess our current position in life, often with a focus on career. It could possibly be the time to look at ways to further our present career paths or maybe even time for a total change in career direction.
If you’re undecided about what your next step should be, ask yourself these questions… Does my current position utilize my professional abilities and talents? Am I really passionate about my job? Am I struggling to constantly motivate myself each day? Am I maximizing my earning potential? Do I wish I could be doing a job that someone else is doing? Am I continuously complaining to family and friends about my job? Depending on your answers, maybe it’s time to assess your personal work style and unique characteristics before researching alternative career options. Find out about yourself Before making any major decisions, you need to figure out what you want from life and from work. Scrutinize everything about yourself, from personality and interests to skills and qualities. Set mini-goals Break down your goals into simple, manageable steps which are short, realistic and achievable. Don’t be tempted to try and tackle a bucket list of possible goals or you’ll end up feeling overwhelmed. Instead, choose one to three smaller goals and complete them one step at a time. Time for a change If you aren’t happy in your current career, you need to investigate what is causing the discontent. Once you’ve established the root of your discontent, you can make an informed decision. Personal Brand Create a competitive edge by pinpointing your unique strengths, qualities and talents. Chicken and Tortilla Soup Cream Cheese Potato Soup Chicken and Tortilla Soup Ingredients 6 cups water | 3 1/2 pound whole roast chicken cut in 8 pieces | 1 large chopped onion | 1 medium-sized peeled and chopped carrot | 1 stalk chopped celery | 8 sprigs cilantro | 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin | 1 tsp chili powder | 1/2 tsp ground ancho Chile pepper | 1/2 tsp dried oregano | 2-3 bay leaves | 8 corn tortillas cut into 1/2 inch strips | 2 tbsp corn oil | salt and ground black pepper to taste | 4 cups chicken broth | 2 cups sugar snap peas, sliced diagonally | 2 small zucchinis cut in 1/4 inch slices | 1 cup chopped tomatoes | 1/2 seeded and finely chopped jalapeno pepper | 1 cup coarsely shredded cheddar cheese | cilantro leaves for garnishing Method • Boil water, roast chicken, onion, chopped carrot, celery, 8 cilantro sprigs, ground cumin, chili powder, ancho Chile pepper, oregano and bay leaves in a 6-quart Dutch oven over a medium heat. • Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until chicken is tender. • In another saucepan, heat corn oil and fry tortilla strips until crispy and light golden. • Remove from saucepan with a slotted spoon and drain the strips on a paper towel. Season with salt. • Use tongs and remove chicken from the mixture and let it cool. Strain remaining liquid and discard solids. Pour liquid into the Dutch oven and simmer over a medium heat. • Remove meat from bones and discard bones. Tear chicken in 1-inch pieces and add to broth. Simmer for 5 minutes. • Add sugar snap peas, zucchini, tomato and jalapeno pepper. Simmer for 3-4 minutes or until tender and season with salt and black pepper. • Sprinkle cheddar cheese, tortilla strips and cilantro. Serve hot.

eing South African, I hail from a country blessed with lush landscape and natural rivers with thriving ecosystems. At home, most weekends are spent enjoying the outdoors with our tents pitched near the riverbed, soaking up the beauty and excitement that Mother Nature has to offer. Moving to Al Ain was a big change. The harsh weather conditions curbed our outdoor activities, and I became a mall trawler. As fun as this was to start, it wasn’t long before I started craving the outdoors again and my family and I began to visit Jebel Hafeet, the oases, and the parks across the city. Now, having been here for over six years, I thought that I’d seen everything the city has to offer. That was, until I was introduced to Al Ain Weekends. A chat with Cheryl Dance and Amro Abu Kuhail, founders of the group, revealed there is a lot more for me to discover throughout Al Ain and beyond! How did Al Ain Weekends begin? Cheryl and I thought that there was a need for another community in Al Ain. Many people think there is nothing much to do here but there are lots of things you can do. Our goal is to provide people with opportunities to see and experience firsthand why Al Ain is so special. We want to show people so that they can respect the culture and heritage that surrounds them. For example, did you know that Al Ain has the 5000-year-old Hafeet Tombs? When did Al Ain Weekends start? We started in November 2011 with just 20 people and now we have almost 430 members on Facebook and 400 on our mailing list! Who are your members? The western expats are our target community but everyone is welcome. We have all kinds of people in our group. We also make it clear that we are not a tour group but an educational group for members to network and meet different people away from their daily lives and workplace.

How often do you have outings? We try and have outings every weekend. Usually, they last from 3-5 hours but sometimes we have overnight or extended trips to places like Oman. Our outings coincide with the academic year, running from September to June. Where are some of the places you visit? We visit a range of culture and heritage areas, from places such as The Al Ain Oasis, Al Jimi Oasis, Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain National Museum, the Camel Races, The Old Souk, Jebel Hafeet and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites to unknown wadis, abandoned villagers and traditional festivals. We also venture further afield to places like Buraimi and make overnight trips to Oman. How do people find out more information about the trip? When activities are planned, we send out an email with all the information people need to know. If we plan trips to Oman, participants bear the organizational costs. During the planning stages of an overnight or extended trip, we do a reconnaissance to see what accommodation is available and whether it’s better to go with sedans or if 4x4s are required etc. Are there any membership fees? There are no membership fees but we are volunteers who depend on participant donations to cover expenses to run these outings. How do people find out about you? We’re featured on Al Ain Expat and Niala. In the beginning, we used these community groups to post information but now the group is large enough, so it’s more through word of mouth. W
ell, where do I start? Especially when my home town has just been voted the best city in the world in which to live for the second year running, edging out Austria’s glam Vienna in the process!
This coastal city of 4.1 million is a friendly multicultural melting pot that, on top of traditional Aussie life, offers a fusion of Greek, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Lebanese, Turkish and African cuisine, festivals and fashion. It’s an exciting and vibrant city and, I have to admit, I’m one of its biggest fans.
If slow and steady is more your holiday style, why not wind your way through Melbourne’s cobbled alleyways, tagged with colorful graffiti and cutting-edge street art, or rent a tandem pushbike and enjoy a romantic meandering pedal along the tree lined Yarra River bike tracks? You could take a stroll over to the Victorian Arts Centre with its Eiffel tower-like spiral, and catch a cutting-edge cabaret, musical, comedy or circus show at the famous Spiegeltent, before enjoying a latte and bagel at one of the many nearby street cafe's.
Known for its scatty weather, Melbourne often sees four seasons in one day, I advise you to always arm yourself with an umbrella, woolly scarf, ample sunscreen and a warm jacket, regardless of the forecast or the blue skies overhead. My favorite time of year to visit is autumn, when Melbourne’s many parks are carpeted with countless red, gold and bronze leaves. If, however, you plan on visiting during the gloriously warm summer months, remember to pack your swim suit or board shorts so you'll be all set to take part in a spot of beach volleyball or try your hand at the ever popular kite boarding in Port Philip Bay.

It has to be said that Melburnians adore their coffee and drink it every which way at all hours of the day. The best place to join them in this little indulgence is in Melbourne’s ‘Little Italy’ on Lygon street, about 20 minutes from the city center, where the gelato, cannoli and gnocchi is also ‘belissimo’. If you fancy some char grilled cuttlefish, Greek souvlaki or good old-fashioned fish and chips take a tram in the other direction and roll on down to St Kilda Bay. Sit on the sand and share your chips with hungry seagulls as you watch the sun set over the water.
