As Seen On The

A new wave of rich, hand-crafted brews full of flavor, personality & creativity SNEAKY BLONDE • 7.1% ABV

The Sneaky Blonde is considered a traditional German farmhouse ale, with a golden color denoting it as a classic blonde ale. The brew received its “Sneaky” label due to its smooth flavor disguising a hearty 7.1% alcohol content. Considered the crossover choice for traditional domestic beer drinkers, this fresh and bright ale is currently the top selling beverage offered by GCB and accounts for more than half our monthly sales.

ROcKET RiDE • 7.6% ABV

Embracing the Independent Spirit of Texas Craft Beer

The Rocket Ride is a classic brown ale, with a roasted color and a softer palate flavor hinting of caramel, coffee and toasted nuts. Designed to appeal to the more adventurous craft beer drinker, its unobtrusive flavor profile also appeals to the cross-over consumer. The biggest challenge is educating the consumer that a darker colored beer does not equate to a “heavier” beer such as stouts and porters. The Rocket Ride clocks in at a bold 7.6% alcohol content.

GOBLiN HuNTER • 6.6% ABV

The Goblin Hunter is our third beer and by far the most mysterious. We call it a year-round Halloween Seasonal as it is our twist on an Octoberfest Lager, but an ale. This beer features five different malts and as proven very popular with the more sophisticated craft beer drinkers and home brewers who are constantly trying to figure out its style and guess its ingredients. It is full of flavor but surprisingly “lite” and refreshing.

5th Annual Kemah Crawfish Festival March 20, 21 & 22 • Kemah Lighthouse District By Rhonda Meredith

said Doug Davenport of Gulf Coast Festivals.

Make plans to attend the fifth annual Kemah Crawfish Festival on March 20, 21 and 22, 2015. Experience the sights of the bay, the thrill of a big party with likeminded individuals, the sounds of the best zydeco, country and Texas Southern rock music, and the taste of ice cold beer as it combines with Featuring the “World’s the seasoning on hot, Largest Crawfish Cooker ^ scrumptious crawfish.

These mudbugs are “spiced right and priced right.” And you better bet they will taste fresh, too, since they are trucked in daily from farms in Louisiana. In addition to the crawfish, the festival will offer other Cajun dishes and festival cuisine. Wash it down with a cold Dos XX beer – the official beer of the Kemah Crawfish Festival.

Whether you plan “to keep calm and peel on,” or “go get your peel on,” partying and having a great time is on the top of the list of things to do. This crawfish celebration is held in the Kemah City parking lot located at 6th Street and Harris Avenue. “We will be cooking crawfish out of our brand new cooking units that will be able to produce 6,000 pounds of delicious boiled crawfish per hour!”

“We are all about eating and music,” said Davenport. He recounted that in the years past, the event became one big dance floor. The live musical entertainment kicks off on Friday, March 20 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. with the Louisiana-based T-Broussard and the Zydeco Steppers, followed by the Texas Southern rock tunes of Wes Hardin & The Country Outlaws from 7 to 10 p.m. On Saturday, March 21, Lil Porter & The Zydeco Hustlers start the party from noon to 3 p.m. Afterward, enjoy the country music stylings from Baytown’s own Breelan Angel from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 22 Noon-2:30pm MARCUS ARDOIN & DA ZYDECO LEGENDZ

Headlining the stage that night from 7 to 10 p.m. is 3-5:30pm Louisiana’s high-energy showFRED RUSK & THE man, and Grammy award winZYDECO HI-STEPPERS ner Wayne Toups, who has long been dubbed “The Cajun Springsteen.” Toups mixes Cajun sounds with the rhythms of zydeco, adding elements of soul music and Southern rock. He calls the revved-up result “zydecajun,” and his electrifying group, “a Cajun fusion band with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude.” He has more than a dozen records and has toured in more than 20 countries. You do not want to miss the electrifying performance of Wayne Toups. - Continued on Page 15

News And Notes: Anniversaries & Openings Masa Sushi Sake Bar turns 8

(located at the HEB shopping center in Dickinson) and raise your glass in honor of this worthy celebration!

March 18 is a big deal for Dickinson’s Masa Sushi Sake Bar. Not only will they be celebrating their 8-year anniversary, they are passing on huge savings to their customers.

----------------------------------------------------

Blue Palms Bar & Grill opens

For one day only, Masa Sushi Sake Bar (1804 W. FM 646 in Dickinson) will offer diners 50 percent off their entire bill: March 18 from 4 to 10 p.m. This includes food and alcohol. (Sorry, this special is not available for carry out, dine-in service only.)

The local restaurant SCENE continues to grow with the addition of Blue Palms Bar & Grill (2320 NASA Parkway, Seabrook). The husband and wife team of David and Cindy Burington are committed to using only fresh ingredients in unique made-fromscratch dishes that offers variety and appeals to all five senses. Stop in let them introduce you to “Modern American” cuisine. Blue Palms is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.

Masa Sushi owner Michael Zhou prides himself on serving his customers fresh fish flown in daily from Honolulu. He says, “We provide our customers with fresh sushi, and great service from our friendly staff. There is an excellent atmosphere at Masa, with traditional and fusion style food available.”

----------------------------------------------------

Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash & Grill turns 7

If you’re wondering what sets Masa Sushi Sake Bar apart from the original location. First of all, Sake Bar has a full bar with excellent drink selections to chose from. Another point of difference is their second floor private party area that overlooks the restaurant. Since 2005, Masa Sushi has consistently provided customers with a combination of traditional Japanese cuisine with a splash of French flare from their original location (Masa Sushi Fusion Restaurant) at 977 NASA Road One. Both locations offer a welcoming environment amidst an American contemporary décor with Asian accents, though only ONE will have the 50 percent off special on March 18. You will have to wait until October to celebrate Masa Sushi Fusion’s anniversary.

Its hard to believe its been seven years since the opening of one of the most creative venues, possibly anywhere. Where else can one watch a UFC fight or the Rockets, listen to live music, enjoy a couple craft beers and -- now -- chow down on some quality grub while their car gets the all-star treatment from some of the best car wash ninjas in the industry? Hugh & Jeff’s (1232 FM 646, Dickinson) is the answer. The official anniversary party is Saturday, March 7 with performances from Southbound 45 and Chris Hardy; drawings for cool prizes; and drink specials all night. But as we enter car was season, feel free to stop in anytime all month to congratulate Hugh and his crew on the anniversary.

So grab a few friends and head over to Masa Sushi Sake Bar

HEART & S OUL

Featured Artist: Logan Goodson

By Kelley Dawson Local artist, Logan Goodson paints a subject with passion so palatable one observer said she could smell it. According to Goodson, it was the best compliment he received regarding a painting and he knew he’d been given a gift. For that reason, Goodson also paints with purpose. “Art chose me, it’s what I’m supposed to do,” he said. Goodson believes his God-given gift is meant to be shared with the world. He insisted, “I want people to feel my paintings.” His latest art show, Heart and Soul is befittingly named for those combined elements embedded in his works. Goodson revealed he had no formal art training, but managed to secure a graphics art job with the Astrodome in 1981. He worked there for 20 years and Goodson said many of those years he was the art director. He designed many iconic posters and paintings for the Dome for greats such as Mike Scott, Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Milo Thomas. Goodson continues to design for NASA/Johnson Space Center graphic projects. Currently and for the past two years, Goodson told he has been painting almost daily. He stated, “I wanted to get serious about it and get to another level.” He added, “Painting is a lot like golf. You gotta hit a lot of balls and then hit a lot more.” He painted daily to get consistent, learn the nuances, and let go of fear. Goodson shared he surrendered to the canvas, to the paint, to the right brush. He said, “I’d put on some paint and go fast as I could and not think about right or wrong. Magic was the end result. Just paint and don’t stop. Let it be and the magic happens.” Goodson acknowledged, “As I paint, my primary goal as an artist is to create a signature look.” He said he wants the viewers to see his paintings and say, “Oh, Logan did that.” Achieving his goal is not easy, Goodson confessed; “It’s hard to do. I want to draw every little thing.” - Continued on Page 23

La Porte to Host Quilting Festival • March 21 E

SC

the third Saturday in March on La Porte’s Main Street, and we would love to see the Pieceful Stitches retreat venue completely booked, the Painted Pony swarming with quilters, and our streets lined with beautiful quilts from all over the United States,” said recreation superintendent Megan Mainer.

For more than 25 years La Porte has been home to one of the most coveted quilt shops in Texas, the Painted Pony. With more than 8,500 square feet and over 10,000 bolts of fabric that date back to the early 1900s, quilters have long-traveled to the Galveston Bay Area just to visit this store. Now, with the help of an Enhancement Grant from the City of La Porte, quilters can make a retreat weekend out of their trip. Pieceful Stitches will be the first quilters retreat to open in the Houston area and will be in the in the heart of La Porte’s historic downtown area the third weekend of March. They started booking groups for retreats at the first of this year. With its proximity to one of the top ten quilt shops in the United States, easy access to downtown La Porte eateries, antique shopping, and a short walk down to the water, this cottage will become the most sought after quilters’ haven on Galveston Bay.

The City of La Porte offers enhancement grants to businesses open, or opening, in their historic downtown district that consists of Main Street and Broadway. “The idea is to encourage redevelopment in our downtown. We have a lot of great things happening in La Porte right now and a lot of momentum building downtown. What better way to encourage new businesses to call La Porte home than to offer them this program as an incentive,” said Economic Development Coordinator Scott Livingston.

“We have an incredible Airing of the Quilts event planned for

LOGAN GOODSON: Continued from Page 20

For his portraits most often painted with oils, he explained, “to get away from the photographic and look like I was there, I use my own style, textures, colors. My interpretation. I don’t need every detail, just let the mind put it together.” Goodson disclosed he also uses high contrast images and adds color where it normally would not be along with squared, unblended brush strokes for an almost pixelated or posterized look. His deep, thick textures beckon one to reach out and touch. In fact, the artist encourages it in order to really feel his passion. To obtain even more amazing depth and values, Goodson will sometimes paint portraits with just a pallet knife. He determined a pallet knife forces him not to be perfect and to make a more interesting image. He mentioned many people comment on the eyes of his portraits. Goodson expressed, “The eyes are incredible. Capture the eyes and everything else falls into place.”

The first ever Airing of the Quilts Festival is happening Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in La Porte. This event will have quilters and fans of the fabric art from all over the nation. This new art event will have quilt displays, blanket bingo, artisan venders, quilt square exchange and foods from the locally owned restaurants and food vendors.

La Porte’s revitalization of Main Street and the Painted Pony will be many artists’ and quilters’ ideal destination. For more information on the quilters’ haven or to register a quilt for the Airing of the Quilts visit www.visitlaportetx.com/quilting. And “sew,” a new traditions begins!

Goodson enjoys painting abstract pieces as well. He considers abstracts pure emotions. “People see what they want, their own interpretation,” informed Goodson. He uses pastry-like knifes, spatulas, or dry wall tools to “literally throw paint onto canvas.” He runs acrylic paint down the length of a knife and throws or smears it. He expressed, “It builds as I go into something interesting. As I’m painting, literally playing with paint, the colors and texture take on a life of its own.” Goodson throws and smears “to a point I like to look at it and it’s done.” Goodson admitted he tries to aim, but sometimes the paint goes where it wants. “Sometimes I have more paint on me than the canvas,” he joked. Whether portraits or abstract, Goodson finds painting spiritual. He understands how fortunate he is for the ability to paint for a living. Goodson will continue to share his heart and soul; creating “oh-Logan-did-that” pieces people want to physically touch as they are being emotionally touched.

THE WEDNESDAY

NIGHT RACES RETURN!

The Clear Lake Racing Association is an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the Houston/Galveston Bay area. During the months of April through October (during Daylight Savings Time), there is enough light left over in the day to get off work, and head for the docks to launch boats and get in a sailboat race. Wednesday Nights Races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail handling skills. After the race, everyone gathers at the Villa Capri Restaurant where trophies are presented. Weekly trophies are generous food credits from the Villa Capri.

Wednesday Night Sailboat Races on Clear Lake Villa Capri: 3713 NASA PKWY (Seabrook)

The Wednesday Night Races began locally in the late ‘70s and have evolved. There are Wednesday Night Sailboat Races held all over the country but those held in Clear Lake are unique because many of the marks are placed close to spectator docks. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the team work required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining. Following the remaining seminars and a Skipper Meeting and season opening party in March, the action will start on Wednesday, April 1 as The SCENE Magazine sailing team, captained by veteran sailor Stuart Lindow, returns to the water in “Tropical Aggression” to win a third consecutive J/24 title as well as travel all over the state competing in the J/24 Texas Circuit. Sponsoring The SCENE Sailing Team in 2015 is Carefree Boat Club, Galactic Coast Brewing, UK Sailmakers, Bahama Rigging, Bay Area Media Services and Vacuum Truck Rentals. Come out and cheer them on!

LAKEWOOD YACHT CLUB CELEBRATES TWO MILESTONES This year Lakewood Yacht Club is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary by turning 60 years old. It is also proud to announce that for the first time in the club’s history, Lakewood has a lady Commodore, Joyce Maxwell, who will be at the helm. Rated by the Robb Report to be in the top ten yacht clubs in the country, Lakewood has shined as an anchor within the Bay Area Houston community through the years. Lakewood officially opened its doors on Aug. 19, 1955. It is said that one of the reasons Lakewood came into being was because a number of people wanted a club solely for power boaters. That changed in the 1970’s when the sailboats became part of the scene and Lakewood now is split 50/50 with power and sail boaters.

“Vast improvements, inside and outside, have taken place over the past years,” explains Maxwell. “Through the dedication and efforts of many of its members and management, Lakewood continues to grow and prosper as a first class club.”

HYC - Beneteau Challenge

An attorney by practice, Maxwell was born in Paducah, Kentucky and grew up across the river in Metropolis, Illinois (home of Superman and the Daily Planet). Her passion as a child was horseback riding and her favorite pet was a goat named Prancey. Maxwell graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. degree and then moved to Texas in 1972 where she earned her law degree from the South Texas College of Law. Relocating to the Bay Area Houston in 1989, she and her late husband Darold, have enjoyed a water life-style, living on Galveston Bay. Their trawler, named “Moonshadow” is a Grand Banks 42 Classic docked at Lakewood Yacht Club. Currently a cruiser, Maxwell enjoys racing and pleasure sailing as well. In 2001, they purchased “Moonstruck”, a ketch, and sailed throughout the Western Caribbean as far south as the San Blas Islands off Panama. The Maxwells joined Lakewood Yacht Club in 1982 with Joyce immediately becoming involved in numerous club activities. She has chaired the following committees through the years: cruising, Gossip Gertie in the newsletter, the Harvest Moon Regatta®committee, membership, audit selection, bylaws committee and the Lakewood Yacht Club Rules Revision. Maxwell has service on the board of directors in some capacity for over ten years and the club’s executive committee for 3 years.

“It is an honor to serve as Lakewood’s first woman Commodore, and I look forward to a rewarding year filled with exciting activities and challenges for our members, including the remodeling of our clubhouse dining room,” remarked Maxwell.

LAKEWOOD RACES SUPPORTED BY ANNUAL SPONSORS Lakewood Yacht Club’s Race Sponsorship Committee Chair Andrea Todaro recently announced that several club members have stepped up this year to join the city of Seabrook in supporting its race series as annual sponsors. “This additional support allows the club to continue its first-class race schedule and related events that sailors from all over the country have come to enjoy throughout the year,” explained Todaro. Yacht repair and maintenance company, True North Marine, owned by Patrick and Michelle McAndrew, has expanded its Harvest Moon sponsorship to become an annual sponsor. New to race sponsorship is The Yacht Sales Company which is the new Beneteau sailboat dealer in the Bay Area Houston region. This is owned by Jonathon Davis who also operates the sister company, The Yacht Service Company. Also joining

the new annual sponsor lineup is Blackburn Marine owned by the Lambert family. This company supplies quality marine products. On board as well is Alliant Insurance thanks to the efforts of Cran Fraser, their new Vice President in their Marine and Energy Group. Lakewood racer J.D. Hill of RejeX joins the growing list, touting his product slogan “RejeX your boat, wax the competition.” World renowned racer O.J. Young and his company O.J’s Marine joins Little Yacht Sales, owned by Kent Little, to round out our annual race sponsor list. “I hope that when racers see these sponsors on race weekends, they will take the time to express their appreciation personally,” added Todaro. POP CAUTIOUS • Continued from 44 My main focus has always been writing, recording and performing music as an artist, but once I had a chance to start working and collaborating with different artists in LA, I realized there is a niche group of likeminded and talented people here and the idea of a label could very well become a reality." Pop Cautious Records was created by Porterfield in order to establish a creative, collaborative environment and ideal platform to better serve himself and his fellow musician friends. The label produces, promotes and releases quality, indie music; various flavors of indie-folk as it strives to establish a unique and identifiable culture in the Los Angeles music scene. There are presently three acts signed to the label: Seneca and the River, Pop Cautious, and Luke Strand with more signings to be announced. “I've kind of allowed Pop Cautious Records to grow as organically as possible,” Porterfield said. “I’m grateful for the artists that I am working with as they have supported this dream of mine as it all is beginning to really take shape.” “Sampler” is available on iTunes and all other digital retailers, select record stores and at the label’s website www.popcautiousrecords.com. --------------------------------------------------------

ST. PATRICK’S DAY • Continued from 39 Cock & Bull British Pub, 3659 NASA Road 1, Seabrook, confirms to the Bay Area that the British and the Irish can complement one another. Live music with Mark Hessler. T-Bone Tom’s, 707 Highway 146 in Kemah, has the Irish rock band Blaggards in Tom’s Backyard from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday March 11 (the weekend prior), and will have green beer on St. Patrick’s Day. Lazy Lizard Coastal Kitchen and Cantina, 1817 Avenue K in San Leon, has drink specials all day. Tookie’s Hamburgers, 1202 Bayport Blvd. in Seabrook, is serving green beer. THE SCENE: LOCAL LIVE MUSIC GUIDE THE SCENE MAGAZINE • PROVIDING THE BEST COVERAGE OF THE CLEAR LAKE/BAY AREA LIVE MUSIC SCENE

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 45 Thanks for reading and hope to see you out there. From Staas & the Seagull, from zymurgy and space flight to the Bay View Duck, and on to Scout Bar – Press forward we must and that we will… SERIOUS MAN – About the time Ike came through, so did Zach Tate... Canadian by birth and a music-industry trained in California, Tate took root in the Clear Lake area residing in Nassau Bay and set forth developing and spreading his musical style. Over the years, he has continually collaborated with local musicians and has one of the area’s best track records of supporting young talent on to seek their dreams – be it in Nashville or studies leading to scholastic music teaching. His music nurturing skills aren’t solely for the young as Tate’s compositions attract the services from more than several of the area’s fine talent, often getting musical extension out of them perhaps as well as Zen Master Phil Jackson during his days blending his diverse mix of superstar teams. We enjoyed the band hanging tight throughout the set, nailing snazzy turnarounds crisply, and bantering solo licks at each other at racetrack speeds. Listening through his newest 14-song CD of complete originals, Serious Man, Tate continues to demonstrate how he grows his music first around a pure lyric theme that hits one’s root, sets his message in motion with a transcendental swing and tempo that cooks up unique and fresh, then seasons the swirl with a gusto and energy designed from years of commanding crowds at the LoneStar Rally. According to Zach, “Not every song comes out ready at any set time, some take more time than others. I always keep several songs in work and will release each when it comes ready.” Studio albums often sound differently than the live show. Listening to the CD and hearing the show live at The Loading Dock, Too (Bacliff), it was hard hearing the difference between the recording and the live show. The studio recorded tracks captured at live show vibrancy while the live performance possessed studio-quality crispness and clarity, rare on both perspectives, speaking well for both the band and the studio engineers. Perhaps the only thing that gave the live show away was seeing the dancers and the cold beer. We caught the Zach Tate Band playing with a mostly full complement included Anthony Puskus - Drums/Vocals, Lynn Raggio - Lead Guitar, Chuck Cabler - Bass/Vocals, and Fred Linton - Saxophone & Keyboards. Other musicians on Serious Man include Brian Thoms - Pedal Steel, Rick Reckio - Bass, Tom Rivera-lead Guitar, and Rebecca Stoll - Vocals, John Stoll Mandolin/Banjo, Paul Chapman and Lane Coker playing on live shows. Produced by Andy Bradley at Sugar Hill, Zach demonstrates a streak of old fashion. When I asked how come he still sells CDs, complete with multipage fold out inserts, lyrics, photos, credits for $10, he politely points out because he makes more money selling the package than what he would get by distributing through the Internet. Serious Man…

Texas Beer Enthusiast Did You Know? Bipartisan “Small BREW Act” recently introduced in Congress

Galveston County “Brothers in Brew”

1. With the recent license approvals of Fetching Lab Brewing and Galveston Bay Beer Company, Galveston County now has seven breweries/brewpubs licensed to manufacture beer. That is up from just one three years ago when Galactic Coast Brewing became the first brewery to operate in Galveston since the 1980s. Pictured above is Galactic Coast’s John Ennis, Fetching Lab’s John Sullivan and Galveston Bay Beer’s Skyler Forshage.

Bipartisan legislation was recently introduced in Congress to promote small brewery job creation. Supported by the Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers, the Small BREW Act seeks to recalibrate the federal beer excise tax that small brewers pay on the beer they produce. Alternative excise tax legislation, entitled the BEER Act, was introduced in the House. Bob Pease, CEO of the Brewers Association, issued the following statement on the BEER Act: “While the Brewers Association supports lowering excise taxes for small brewers, the BEER Act is not the way to do it. There are several problematic issues with this legislation including cost to the country, job creation and fairness. “The BEER Act gives further tax advantages to multinational brewing companies that not only already pay lower rates than purely domestic brewers, but also have cut thousands of U.S. jobs in the past six years and export and shelter their U.S. profits.

2. That Dickinson based Texas Beer Refinery is the first and only Texas brewery to have full, reusable growlers of their beer available for sale at retail establishments. Currently one can pick up a growler of TBR at local HEB Stores and then visit the brewery to get it refilled.

“We stand firmly rooted in our support for the Small BREW Act, fair legislation that will allow small brewers to remain competitive in the marketplace, reinvest in their businesses, reinvigorate local economies and continue their role in rejuvenating the job market in the U.S.”

The Brewers Association is the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers, their beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts. The Brewers Association (BA) represents more than 70 percent of the brewing industry, and its members make more than 99 percent of the beer brewed in the U.S. The BA organizes many events including the World Beer Cup®, Great American Beer Festival® and WHAT’S ON TAP Craft Brewers Conference KPRC 950AM among others. 3 p.m. Sundays

Clear Lake alum launches POP CAUTIOUS RECORDS By Rhonda Meredith Tyler Porterfield, a Clear Creek I.S.D. alumnus and founder of the Los Angeles-based indie record label Pop Cautious Records has released a three-song artist sampler of the bands signed by the label. The EP aptly titled “Sampler” was released in February, and features one track from each artist signed on the label.

Pop Cautious Records launch party at the Sunset Marquis in Los Angeles

Porterfield, who also uses the Pop Cautious moniker professionally, grew up in El Lago, and during 7th grade, he formed the band “Natricity” with his two brothers Austin and Houston, and friend Abel Noah. The band performed regularly including an appearance on the Seabrook Music Festival’s main stage. They won Houstonarea battle of

the bands contests, and were able to take their music on tour throughout Texas. Natricity was together four years before the band members started graduating high school and moving for college. Porterfield’s love of music was channeled into studying music theory at the University of Texas in Austin. He also finetuned his sound while performing live around Texas. In 2010, he moved to Los Angeles. “The idea of starting a record label had been floating around in my head for awhile,” Porterfield said. “After I moved to Los Angeles and had a chance to intern for both indie and major labels, I developed a better understanding of how all of this works. - Continued on Page 34

LOOSE NOTES: Continued from Page 46 Bobby had a drum style that was clearly outside the box. While chatting with him, I discovered his music composition background included studies under the likes of Dixie Dregs and Berklee, bringing in a unique snazzy beat to the band’s southern rock style. Musically, the Seagull has it’s acoustical nuances that challenges the visiting teams and charms hometown favorites. I think the Big Jordan band held their own for their first showing rather well. They brought along a nice gathering of their following, and if they so choose, could very well own the house along with many of the other great garage bands up and down the Gulf Coast highway, a great central music meeting venue for Galveston to Baytown; perhaps? MIXED EMOTIONS – Please hang with me, Good People, as I try to make it through this one... The live music thread wove its way beginning at the Cock-eyed Seagull where I finally got to hear Steven Staas perform Alices Restaurant with musical Godfather Billy Gilbert to honor Cindy Peterson, fallen longtime friend of the music scene. Steve played the night with a gracious control worthy of a former aerospace engineering manager, the kind of control that carries well in zymurgy. We lost Steve last month as he fell through a medical safety net. The popular spirit was a celebration of life amongst the crowd that packed the Bayview Duck where Mashtronauts, his former aerospace colleagues, and a live music performance through the night featuring Wood & Wind, Billy Gilbert, Reida Riley, Starr Jernigan and Myrna Sanders gathered. I must confess with a few others, feeling the emo-

tions of anger and rage for a system that would let us lose such a fine soul as Steven. Fortunately, later that week, I wandered into Scout Bar and caught Theory of Thieves along with Shot Dead on Sunday – two talented young bands playing on themes of anger and rage. Be it relationships, work, life, whatever. It didn’t matter... Funny, but it was the music these ears needed to hear. I’m not sure if Steven ever went into Scout Bar (he probably would’ve preferred Zappa), but in the spirit of live music, I would like to believe he’d approve. The sound on the new Scout Bar system was dialed in perfectly that night to carry through the band’s unusually therapeutic message and their new light setup was brilliant. Scout Bar will be celebrating their 11th Anniversary in April. Over the years, Scout Bar’s audiences have ranged across all kinds of genres and ages. Their endless stream of national acts has earned Scout Bar the title of Tour Stop Clear Lake, and their support for the new bands has been perpetual.

all night. Now if that’s not a cleaver idea, I’m not sure what is. Maybe crazier yet is the crazy good dishes that Matt Wev and the awesome Brickhouse staff have been sneaking onto their menu? Psst... Jackie’s is now serving Sunday brunch to which reports have scored this as an epicurean coup. I seriously have trouble picturing Jackie’s serving mimosas and gentle Sunday morning violin quartet music, but these folks keep pulling out the surprises to no end!

Also in the district, caught Raf Rivera, before he had to catch a plane to support Saliva on their nationwide tour rolling out in March. With the temperatures at a ridiculous 42 degrees and blowing, his solo appearance at Monkey Bar was cancelled, but luckily rebooked for the following Saturday night working out well for us to provide a proper send off. Mean Gene Kelton (RIP) wrote an intriguing book titled “Gig’s From Hell” (which is still available on Amazon these days for you procrastinators), and while I suspect Raf’s tour should be more of a merry bus ride (Raf’s simply one of those always “up” people), can’t help but wonder what stories would be in a book Raf writes 10 years from know – Guess we’ll just have to wait, eh?

NEWCOMER TO THE SCENE – Which would be the Big Jordan Band hailing from La Porte, of course, the spot on Earth that has produced an endless stream of musical talent over the decades. We first caught Big Jordan playing at Cisco’s open mic at the Cockeyed Seagull and were impressed with the disciplined tone. We caught them again during the Seabrook Music Festival and were wowed by their vigor and gusto amidst the August Texas heat wave. It made sense to catch the entire band at the Cockeyed Seagull. Beyond the expected with the Jordans and Richard Rose on guitar and fiddle, I was captivated with Bobby James on the kit.

MAKE THAT FUNKY MUSIC – Ever notice how in the past couple of years, many bands will play the funky MP3 tracks to keep the audience dancing during band breaks? Jackie’s Brickhouse went and did it the other night bringing in Fidelity Maxx, who much to the crowd’s delight, simply played the funky music
