Seasoned restaurateurs celebrate one-year anniversary of expanding their brand with red river CaNTiNa upon the success of their first two restaurants (red river bbQ & grill in League City and in Katy), brothers Kevin and ric Kiersh, with the collaboration of Concept Leader Jim molina, decided to pursue a new vision under the red river brand.

red river Cantina is a tex-mex concept they had been contemplating for years in homage to their common familial mexican heritage. but the ties that bound the three men didn’t end there. molina was born and raised in League City, and the brothers’ lineage goes back more than a hundred years ago when their great grandmother, maximina “momie” groce and her husband Leonard groce settled in League City after fleeing guadalajara, mexico. the brothers grew up enjoying the recipes handed down by momie and other family members and together with molina, they came up with recipes in their test kitchen for more than two years to create the new cantina’s menu. the team began acquiring property all around the original red river bbQ & grill which first opened its doors in 2002. they built an all-new freestanding restaurant behind the original, which became the new home of red river bbQ & grill. then they completely gutted the old bbQ restaurant space and got to work on creating their vision for red river Cantina. Working with a premiere restaurant architect, they designed the new venue to reflect the cultural and culinary experiences found throughout texas and mexico. From the adobe-style building to the traditional mexican ceramic tiles on the floor, murals along the walls and the open tortilleria area showcasing the fresh tortillas as they are being made, the restaurant’s ambience blends traditional mexican décor with a modern texas flair. molina is particularly proud of the restaurant’s bar area. “We wanted the bar to energize and enhance the vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant, and we wanted it to be a show stopper producing a ‘wow’ effect as soon as guests walk in the door. our bar area has close to 40 seats around the bar plus four islands and four booths with 10 hDtVs strategically placed at every angle surrounding it, making it a great place to catch any game,” molina said, “and every cocktail is handcrafted with fresh ingredients and garnishes.” Continued on Page 17 -

red river CaNTiNa: Cont. From Page 6

With their extensive tequila selections and specialty drinks such as the hornitos black barrel margarita, red river has become known for their high standards and top quality ingredients in all areas of the restaurant. they are extremely particular about the quality of meat they use in their fajitas as well. and although the ambience and quality standards qualify them for high-end restaurant status, their prices won’t break the bank, especially on Wednesdays when they offer half-off combination fajitas for two starting at 4 p.m., or during their daily lunch specials weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MARK YOuR CALeNdAR! Anniversary Celebration

make plans to join the One-Year Anniversary Celebration at red river Cantina on Monday, March 2 and Tuesday, March 3 for food and drink specials. toast the occasion with their all-day birthday specials including $1 miller Lite Draft and $2 Shiner, modelo especial, and Dos XX Lager Draft; $4.95 margaritas on the rocks or Frozen, in addition to their normal weekday happy hour specials from 3 to 7 p.m. monday (march 2), the food special is two beef, chicken, or cheese enchiladas with rice and refried beans for $11.95, valid all day; followed by tuesday (march 3) commemorating taco tuesday with two large tacos with beef Picadillo or ranchero Chicken on special for $11.95, also all day.

“We only buy high quality skirt steak for our fajitas. outside skirt packed by ‘1855’ to be exact, which has to meet more criteria than regular choice skirt steak. We have complete control on the age of the skirt and how it is trimmed, marinated and grilled. We grill our fajitas medium rare to medium and the end product has filet mignon tenderness with great tex-mex flavor,” molina said. another menu standout is their enchiladas marisco, which showcases their blending of texan and mexican styles of cuisine. (these enchiladas are filled with cheese and topped with sautéed shrimp, scallops, and avocados in a creamy white wine sauce.)

red river Cantina is an expansive restaurant with plenty of seating in the bar area and dining rooms. they have areas available for private parties accommodating more than 100 people; but they can also bring the Cantina flavors to you. they offer full-service catering, which means they can bring the food and the margaritas, too. their catering services also include on-site grilling upon request and special menus customized by their chefs for private events. Whether it’s a cocktail reception, family reunion, birthday party, wedding or corporate event, red river can supply whatever the occasion calls for. they also offer online ordering through their website: www.redrivercantina.com for to-go orders and delivery with DoorDash. Lance Covington presented the Joseph C. rauscher award at LyC Seahorse ball

Lance Covington was chosen as the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Joseph C. rauscher award by the Lakewood officers, staff, Junior Flag officers and Seahorse program participants because he exhibits qualities of leadership, fellowship and maturity, and for his involvement in all aspects of youth activities as well as contributions in the community. Lance has been sailing since the age of 8 after getting an opti for Christmas. he joined LyC as a student member and advanced through the different racing fleets. he's had some tremendous on-the-water experiences that he will never forget, including representing the u.S. in Newport, belgium, for the Flanders regatta in the North Sea. he declined an invitation to british Nationals to move from the opti to a Laser where he competed in the texas Sailing association Circuit and then in larger u.S. Sailing regattas. the stiff competition among the Laser forced him to commit countless hours in the gym, numerous chalk talks, and many long days on the water.

"that year and a half of competing and traveling and racing against the best youth sailors in the country has been the best time of my life," said Covington. "the sailing was extraordinarily fun and the competition was great! the traveling allowed me to experience things i know i wouldn’t have done otherwise, surfing the biggest shore break in California, hiking the Columbia river gorge in oregon, and being surrounded by my teammates while getting to share those experiences with them. it was like having a family away from my family and i know they will be lifelong friends."

Lance has served as a camp counselor at Lakewood and on the Junior Flag. he was Junior Commodore in 2019. While sailing has been a significant part of his life, he has also been active in the bay area Cotillion Program as a participant and then as a student instructor. he served the community in various ways, including projects like working in the houston Food bank, preparing lunches and reading to underprivileged school children, home and landscaping restorations, and most recently projects through the bay area Lunar rendezvous organization where he served as a Lieutenant.

Lance will be starting college in the fall, but says "i may be moving forward with my life, but i'm not leaving the wind and the water that i so learned to love at Lakewood yacht Club."

obsolete august @ Cabo

LooSe NoTeS: Cont. From Page 29

NeW YeAR - OBsOLeTe AuGusT sTYLe - over the years, i’m usually catching this band in the summer months but with the New year upon us along with the boss’s birthday, it was the perfect time to bring august into January and Cabo was the perfect location. this evening, without fail, Keven holmes and Danny Lopez were singing a bunch of new material as they typically do each and every time i catch these two. it doesn’t matter if their new songs are old or new but by my scorekeeping, they’re still new, which always makes this a fun and refreshing band to follow. Perhaps their only flaw is that they do this with such ease and easy for listeners to take for grant it. acoustically, Cabo sets up well for the big room sound and with the place perfectly filled that evening. along with the traditional rounds of craft beers and New year whiskey shots, the gang ordered up some very good looking steak platters. Something i hadn’t really associated with this place until now. Cabo and a steak dinner is now on my list to try in 2020.

COZY hANGOuT - you know our type of texas winter, where the cold snaps last for about a day. it was on one of these evenings we joined a full house at Chelsea’s for an evening of zach tate & Lynn raggio. these two typically play the outdoor stage with big sound gear, so i was naturally curious how they would sound inside the cozy el Lago wine bar. Walking in, the first thing i noticed after hearing tate and raggio’s trademark sound filling the building were the “huge” Pa speakers, large enough to handle a parking lot show. yet much to our delight, the two had the sound dialed in perfectly, as if you were sitting inside a cozy Koss headphone. Sweet!!! and with that, we enjoyed an evening with other listeners to a comfortable 92-102 db of sound that filled the entire buildZach Tate & Lynn raggio @ Chelsea Wine bar ing yet let intelligent conversations flow the entire evening. Very, very pleasing… i like the way these two operate, tate lays down the pad with a beat and sings while raggio fills the sonic space with tasteful phrases, licks and accents often using the low strings up to the 5-7th fret where he scales up to the higher strings attacking the 7th yo above the 12th fret. together, they share the sonic space nicely with both of them operating 6-string acoustic instruments, laying down a sound which is recognizable as their very own and what was described by some as “the true galveston vibe.” What’s new for 2020? tate tells me he’s breaking in a new drummer and raggio has himself a clean slate without burden. Chelsea’s, tate and raggio: a good blend in my book... TeXAs FLOOd BANd was in the house! Saturday night at Jackie’s brickhouse was a packed house by 8 p.m. when texas Flood took to the stage. this band definitely brought some spirit back with their tributes to Stevie ray Vaughn and Jimi hendrix. tommy Katona lead guitar and vocals, Steve buckner awesome on bass, and travis montoya killin’ it on drums, evolved as an SrV tribute band but soon started including many other great rock-and-roll legends.

Texas Flood @ Jackie’s brickhouse

Katona started his musical interest at a very young age in hungary. his father was an accomplished blues guitarist being influenced by buddy guy, albert King, and Jimi hendrix. tommy was playing in his father’s band as a young boy, but after a visit to texas in 2006, and being lucky enough to play with some of texas best, alan haynes, Jim Suhler and others, he knew he was destined for the texas blues SCeNe. and texas Flood was born. the show this band gives their audience is powerful and high energy, as songs continue nonstop one after the other, bringing the audience to a spiritual remembrance of some of the finest musicians known in our time. the full house at Jackie’s was mesmerized and thrilled with this band as they took us on a musical journey back in time. guests ranged from 21 to 71, which in itself was a testament to this fabulous age of music, as they all danced the night away! this band is a must see! Don’t be late! /Paula iT’s A WRAP - our texans got drummed out solidly and our astros got branded with what’s been going on in the game since the beginning. i guess that shows that we as a region can handle it. on the bright side, the team next door (LSu tigers) took home the championship and march madness has already begun. i enjoyed chatting with many of you out there. many sharing discarding things that didn’t work well in the past yet filled with optimism for the future. one good thing we’ve got is a great SCeNe to enjoy and plenty of great live music to help get our groove. and with that, let’s do it! See you out there

ThAT CAPTAiN - in last month’s issue of the SCeNe, was an update on the State of the SCeNe and the many exciting happenings in the works. one of the strong thrusts is a continuing extension of the gaLaCtiC CoaSt PoWer hour live radio show where in January, we enjoyed a two part interview with marc borde, who stopped by for the holidays where the story goes like this: “in case you missed it, the talented touring singer/songMarc borde @ Galactic Coast Power hour Live radio Show writer/story teller/recording artist, book author and competitive sailor/surfer marc borde was in the studio for a very special edition of the galactic Coast Power hour to kick off the new year. “the ocean is my Playground. music is my Passion,” according to the trinidad and tobago-born borde whose interest in sailing was sparked after a two-week Caribbean island-hopping adventure at age 13. he quickly picked up as much sailing knowledge and experience as possible and before long was winning regattas, took first place in his texas youth racing circuit, and was competing nationally on various single-handed racing dinghies for the houston and Lakewood yacht Clubs. but his plans of one day sailing in the olympics shifted toward a career in music as he reached young-adulthood. most recently, borde toured the country many times over as the front man and namesake of his reggae/Folk group that Captain creating fun, original, dance music with a signature style that “blends reggae, bluegrass and jammy flavors.” borde has been writing and performing music for years with super popular bands such as “Shark attack” and “Cassette tape.” in 2011, he formed a three-person all-star band appropriately named “the Crew” which recorded an album on a 26-foot sailboat before touring 300-miles off the texas coast on that same boat playing 33 shows in 38 days. borde authored a special-edition book (CD included) about this one-of-a-kind tour by only boat and bicycles named “ guitar Strings and Sailboat things” which sold out three press runs. i

n recent years, borde has been based along the Northern California coast in humboldt bay where he has been completing construction of a 55year-old, 50-foot trimaran that until last year had never touched water for an even more ambitious music tour of the entire planet earth by boat. Plans for another book and to have this tour televised worldwide are already in motion. borde is full of experiences from one day hearing his song prominently in a hollywood movie without his knowledge, to completing a musical tour by sailboat, to being given a basically abandoned unfinished 50-foot trimaran from a French singer following a chance encounter and getting it seaworthy. there is enough content to cover for at least six episodes of the galactic Coast Power hour, but the galactic guys John “the boss” ennis and “mighty” mike taylor got a lot out of marc in two.

borde was amongst the massive collection of talent that gathered in our area before scattering across the country in pursuit of their dreams. We spoke of those magical days and how Joe Serrato has done nicely holding together a reggae musical presence in the area with who remained. asking borde for his word he would like to pass onto the area musicians who remained, he passes on to you, “hold your ground...”

and with that, we closed the show and headed down NaSa road one to Cabo, a steak dinner, and continued the boss’s birthday Party with…

british Lion @ Scout bar

LooSe NoTeS: Continued From Page 32

TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe - in January was a good one when Steve harris and his british Lion band tour of america rolled into town at Scout bar. iCymi, the story on the SCeNe’s Facebook writeup: “harris, best known as the founder, bassist, primary songwriter, composer, lyricist and only constant member of the world-famous heavy metal band iron maiden to support the release of the band’s second album, “the burning.” Soon after the completion of british Lion’s tour of america, harris will return to iron maiden in australia for the Legacy of the beast 2020 arena/Stadium World tour."it's great for us to finally come to america to play some shows around the release of the new album through explorer1 music,” explained harris, cited as one of the greatest heavy metal bassists of all time and known for his signature "galloping" playing style. Joining harris on the record and also on stage at Scout bar will be vocalist richard taylor, guitarists David hawkins and grahame Leslie and drummer Simon Dawson.” as for the show itself, a full house turned out with many wearing fully original iron maiden colors and harris did an impressive job connecting with the fans - a hallmark sign of a good entertainer. in turn throughout the show, full attention was given the band the entire night and british Lion did not let down.

the warm up act the Picture books scored solid favorable first impressions with fans that evening. this straightline alternative - rock - blues group from gütersloh germany, featured Fynn Claus grabke (vocals, guitar) and Philipp mirtschink (drums), decisively ranked itself as the loudest and most power two The Picture books @ Scout bar piece group on the planet - a title that has been long held by Local h (another Scout bar tour Stop band based out of Chicago). a curious note was mirtschink’s drum kit. its cymbal complement consisting of only a huge heavily battered diamond plate gong and a bell. these cats were totally enjoying the moment and playing waaaay past the stops. an observation noticed and shared by many in the audience. What made this band so full of gusto, i’m not sure but grabke did share that when these two aren’t making music or videos, they pass time building chopper bikes. i’ll go with that for now...

Zito Fest @ Katie’s bar

ZiTO BLues FesT! What a fabulous weekend! this was a first and surely won’t be the last! the two-day blues festival at Katie’s was a huge success! hosted by mike zito, this was a guitar fest and musician showcase! it was a weekend of some of the best musicians in our area.

Friday night started the festival with the incomparable mark may. these two guitarists were rockin’ it out with some of their own songs and some favorite blues and rock tunes. along with barry Seelan on keys, eric Demmer blowin’ us away on sax, Darrell Lacy on bass, brandon Jackson on drums and tod Stark on guitar. these guys were all jammin’ in a big way to a packed house, mesmerizing the audience and keeping them dancing, you didn't know which way to turn there was so much talent on the stage!

mike’s guest on Night two was the awesome tony Vega! a packed Katie’s with standing-room-only at 9 p.m. waited with anticipation as these two took off in a big way – the guitar magic was underway. it was round two for eric, barry, tod, brandon and Darrell, and they blew us away with some great classic blues and rock, amazing show from all of these musicians. there were posters available of the event for autographs, and plenty of friends and fun as the night progressed and only got better by the hour. hoping to see this become an annual event for sure! a big thank you to these extremely talented musicians and, of course, to bob and Katie for an awesome weekend of music, friends and fun! /Paula

brett axelson @ Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack

NeW YeAR, NeW LOOKs, NeW GiGs - in the recent past, Clear Lake and the greater houston region was fortunate to enjoy rat ranch, a smoking cover band who played with distinctive gusto and sizzle. they easily got crowds stirring. this was one incredibly hard working band averaging around 300 shows a year before calling it quits. rat ranch split into two separate branches: rat ranch front man, brett axelson, pursued a solo songwriting path while Kent Newman & Scott madigan continued on the cover oriented path, joining up with Stacey Steele, and Paul bryan (Fab 5) with Diamond Jack and Shotgun road. the separation was amicable and necessary. Fast forward to today.... Kent Newman & Sometimes, things take time, and it looks today Stacey Steele @ that things have worked well since this split. in T-bone Tom’s January we enjoyed two small shows happening at same time, with the Newman/Steele duet at t-bone tom’s and axelson at Crazy alan’s Swamp Shack. the timing of these two was coincidental and something we needed to checkout. many of you have seen Diamond Jack or Shotgun road shows in the area and have heard their large sound cover shows. arena-quality music at its finest. the Newman/Steele duet at t-bone’s was more of a relaxing dinner evening on a perfect patio evening with a play list mainly Country & Western numbers featuring Steele on lead vocals and six string while Newman filled in the sonic spaces on electric guitar. my ears caught Newman playing some mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) licks, which were a nice treat for the ears. Life is good!

Down the street at the Swamp Shack, we got a chance to catch axelson flying solo for the first time and was considerably impressed. Since his departure from rat ranch, axelson has gone on to release four CD albums of self-written songs – a prolific pace by any measure. according to axelson, he plays all of the music on these compilations, which is another notable feat; although, i believe he’s come to the stage where he can use his own band, perhaps on the level of bruce Springsteen’s e-Street band.

i had the chance to listen to his tracks for his album, Cinnamon and Fire and along with his show, impressed with his composition formula allowing him to accomplish what few do these days: Write songs about life, starting over, relationships, texas women, and other assorted subjects from the heart. technically, i believe the tracks have room to grow and develop further once axelson believes he’s ready to bring in other talent. at the same time, the abundance of newly created material is an exciting development happening no where else, but “here.” hopefully, axelson’s accomplishments will inspire other local musicians to start creating. two different paths from one common start, both doing well and both highly recommended to continue following. i know i will!

angie emerson (recent SLm Female Vocalist winner) was playing at the bayview Duck with the awkward Jaybirds. both of these struck my muse so we stopped by to check things out while the fireworks were a popping all around the neighborhood. “the awkward Jaybirds are the joint efforts of singer/songwriters angie J emerson (houston) and a.J Seidner (austin). With influences of americana, rock, Soul, and good old Folk music, the awkward Jaybirds’ songs range anywhere from upbeat foot stompers to melancholic melodies that are both beautiful and haunting.” We found the show easy to watch, musically talented and the night “bayview Duck” friendly and fun.

When the Nye music lineup at ancora listed not only abel Salazar and David Schwope but also Phillip Johnson, we knew a Nye stop to the heritage gathering spot was in order. many know how Salazar and Schwope keep live music happening over the years in our ’hood. many newcomers to the SCeNe haven’t heard of Johnson who was a local music force my predecessor, the late Jim Shortt, would often cover. it was on Nye in 2008 where i heard Johnson sing for the first time and the last time until now. in the realm of music vocalists, Johnson is the real deal, and i recommend checking him out. as for the revelry at ancora? in the words of Johnson, “...a gentle reminder…. you can dance year round with live music” - Continued on Page 33

Loose Notes

greetings! the New year, the new decade and the new Lunar Cycle should be well underway by the time you read this. i hope your new beginnings are coming along well. in the stock markets, they say you an idea of what kind of year it will be from observing the early year sessions. if this applies to our local live music scene, we are in for one superb 2020! Let’s run down a bit of what all that went down:

by Andy Eng

NeW YeAR hOP - this year, we rang in the New year with many of you out and about. Fireworks were all around and the night was a blast. We started with andy and the Dreamsicles with his Kic @SS brass, the awkward Jaybirds at bayview Duck, and with abel Salazar, Philip Johnson & David Schwope at ancora. Catching an andy and the Dreamsicle show on New year’s eve has become a regular tradition for many. over the years, we’ve come to know many faces, fans and friends making this an appropriate way to usher in the New year. the Kick @ss brass (Jonathan Starnes - trumpet, adam blakey - Sax, michael Donohue - trombone) was in Very strong form this evening and Cody Loucks held down the beat on drums nicely. upchurch was able to get michael Flores out of retirement and into the guitar slot that was ably held down by randy hughes for the longest of years. also joining the band on vocals was Jay hollander and eJ Nolan (School of rock). upchurch’s band plays songs people know, don’t often hear, but wanna hear. With such a large band, this helps keep things grooving along, this makes an incredible sense to withstand the test of time. ring on!!!

iNsideR TiP: if you don’t recognize the name on the Katie’s marquee, there is a good chance it is a show to see. SCeNe music columnist andy eng has a time-tested theory proven over and over again that if an act shows up on the Katie’s calendar that he hasn’t heard of, chances are it is a show not to be missed and likely a touring act from out-of-state. Co-owner and musician bob emmons does not mess around when it comes to booking live music at Katie’s. “i put in the time to learn what i can about these acts, but often, even i’m blown away,” emmons explained.

on Sundays, from 4 to 8 p.m., Katie’s hosts a jam sesiNsideR TiP #2: although Katie’s is surrounded sion. “it’s not your average jam session,” bob said. “We by a lot or great restaurants, they do have a small have a different guest guitarist hosting it each week. top kitchen offering a range of items from pizza to wings to egg rolls to ensure one musicians like mark may, Jay hooks, Paul ramirez and doesn’t need to miss any of the show if the stomach starts growling. ricky Jackson. We play a short set together for about an hour and then let other musicians jump on stage and jam with us.” that’s a pretty big deal to be able to jam on stage with such seasoned players. Whether it's a local act, or national touring act, one thing is always certain at Katie’s: they offer live music five nights a week. Wednesday through Sunday, there is a band playing on stage no matter what. and their group of loyal regulars, along with their friendly staff will make you feel at home the minute you walk in the door.

KaTie’S bar: extraordinary Music in an intimate Setting in 2004, bob emmons, a life-long musician and native houstonian, and his wife Katie were riding their harley down grand avenue in bacliff when they noticed a “For Sale” sign in front of the old bacliff post office building. they instantly thought it would make the perfect live music venue so they bought the place and built it out, setting the stage to become one of the region’s top places to enjoy bands — many you’ve never heard of going in, and loved coming out — in an intimate setting. For more than 16 years now, bob, who previously worked for the highly respected martin guitars, has been booking the bands and bringing in talented acts from as far away as germany to mix with the top local acts and those with ties to the austin live music scene, the Chicago record scene and wherever great performers can be found. but bob is quick to point out the local music scene in texas and Louisiana is quite strong. “the talent is out there. if some of these musicians came around at a different time, they would be famous,” said bob.

With national level touring acts playing regularly each month, such as Van Wilks, alan haynes, mike zito and Josh garrett, it’s no wonder Katie’s has become a well-known music venue to fans and musicians alike.

bob said, “i get calls from musicians who learned about us from other musicians at festivals This Could be your view or out on the road. So i do a lot of research. Luckily now a days everyone is on youtube.” he explained how he truly only wants to bring the best to Katie’s.

according to bob, some audience members come from as far away or further than some of the bands to catch certain acts that play at Katie’s. Like for Jordan mathew young, who is playing on Saturday, February 8. “No body knew who he was when we first had him come here,” he said, “but, boy, do they know who he is now!”

barge 295 adds to the local music scene with new addition The yard those who follow the SCeNe magazine know our staff believes music is best enjoyed LiVe and iN PerSoN. We are happy to report a brand new music venue has opened in the immediate Clear Lake area. as a matter of fact, this venue is just feet from the coast of Clear Lake itself as the team at barge 295 recently completed the very ambitious development of property bordering the shoreline and historic floating tavern calling it “the yard.” the result is a full-service bar and giant stage overlooking the lake with plenty of seating and space. So much space that there are sand volleyball courts, corn hole and more. the venue opened in time for the inaugural Seabrook Pirate Fest and battle of the bands, among other happenings scheduled, this month. on Saturday, march 7, the all-day Support Local music Showcase will take over the grounds for a concert not to miss. Stay tuned to the SCeNe as we keep you posted on what is scheduled for this dynamic, new entertainment venue.

Diddley quickly became friend, mentor, collaborator and supporter, appearing on two of Loomis’ albums and presenting a cherished red guitar that he still plays.
