Trio of Chefs takes the helm at CULLEN’S

AMERICAN GRILLE!

Cullen’s chefs (from left) Ryan Louviere, Johnny Wesley, Ben Davis and David Coffman

By Doug Harris Kevin and Sandra Munz, who redefined the dining experience for Bay Area residents with the opening of Cullen’s American Grille in 2008, are making headlines once again with their recruitment of not one, not two, but three talented chefs to their Space Center Boulevard restaurant, banquet, and conference space. In August, Cullen’s owner Kevin Munz and his General Manager Ryan Roberts named “super chef” David Coffman as Executive Chef, placing him in charge of their kitchen, catering and banquet operations. Late September, they announced the addition of Johnny Wesley as Executive Pastry Chef, as well as the promotion of Ryan Louviere to Sous Chef. All three culinary masters will also assist with the development of Bravissimo! a new Italian cuisine concept conceived by Munz and Roberts which is scheduled to open in a space adjacent to Cullen’s this fall.

culinary pedigree boasts service at Houston restaurants including Katsuya, Benjy’s, 17 Restaurant in the Hotel Alden, The Tasting Room and Goro & Gun. - Continued on Page 13

The Dallas-born, self-taught Coffman says he is ready to take Cullen’s to the next level. “This is an amazing facility, with one of the best equipped kitchens I’ve ever seen – and a solid track record,” observed Coffman. “With this combination of talent – Johnny, Ryan, and Ben Davis, a staple of the Cullen’s kitchen since its opening – there is no limit to what we can do.” Roberts is not shy about his enthusiasm for Coffman, whose

BOMBSHELLS: Military-Themed Restaurant & Bar Lands in Webster By Rhonda Meredith Man your battle stations! Webster has been invaded! Bombshells is a military-themed restaurant and sports bar complete with interior features such as wings from fighter planes, warheads, bombs, helmets, and spent shell casings. It is a cool concept for the Bay Area. The highly visible, 8,000-plus-square-foot venue is located at 803 East NASA Road 1 in Webster. “The Bay Area has welcomed Bombshells with open arms,” said David Simmons, Director of Operations. “The reaction from its community leaders, City of Webster officials, NASA employees and area residents has been overwhelmingly positive. We look forward to forming partnerships with the local business and charities. This is a community that truly supports local

businesses and that has definitely made our jobs easier!” Bombshells combines multiple entertaining restaurant concepts in one fun location. “There’s great food for lunch, families and getting together with friends and dates; big flat screen TVs to create one of the best new sports bars around; popular local talent providing live music; an outdoor patio; and attractive waitresses who want you to have a good time." Open every day from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Bombshells offers lunch specials from opening until 2 p.m. Happy hour is every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and all day on Thursdays. The full bar and entire menu are available until closing. There is a customer appreciation discount given to all military personnel (veterans and active duty), police, firefighters, and even NASA employees. Ask the wait staff for details. Bombshells provides an energy-filled ambiance and hospitality that allow a great experience for spectators to cheer on their favorite teams. - Continued on Page 16

quests comfortably, but it’s often used for an intimate dinner for two with a string quartet or pianist,” said Roberts. He added that, when utilized in its entirety, the Cullen’s space can easily accommodate close to 1,000 guests. That makes it the perfect choice for a company function or a really, really large wedding.

“This move should pique the interest of foodies across the Gulf Coast,” said Roberts, who has directed the Cullen’s operation since its launch more than six years ago. “Now, with Johnny and Ryan (Louviere), we’re equipped to challenge any kitchen in the state.” Munz is equally confident in the abilities of Johnny Wesley. “Johnny has worked in some of Houston’s top restaurants with some very talented chefs,” said Munz. “Haven, Benjy’s, Killen’s Steakhouse, and most recently Mr. Peeples. He won first place in the Woodlands Wine and Food Week ‘Just Desserts’ Competition and the People’s Choice Award at Pastry Live in Atlanta, along with third place honors overall. This guy has the chops, and now he’s on our team!” Munz believes that good restaurants are known for their food and service but that exceptional restaurants go beyond the call of duty. “Years ago, whether you wanted to plan a romantic dinner for two or a grand gala for hundreds, you had to go to a hotel. We’ve changed that reality.” When it comes to dining, hospitality and entertainment, Cullen’s American Grille epitomizes just that and more. During its relatively short but storied life, the restaurant has earned a reputation for its impeccable ability to transform memorable occasions into extraordinary events. In fact, its broad range of special events is as grand as the restaurant itself. “Our smallest room can accommodate a dozen

Versatility is the key to any event venue’s success and Cullen’s certainly measures up. The Cullen’s Kevin & Sandra Munz complex encompasses a 38,000-square-foot facility, including a fabulous ballroom that can host groups of 200 for a reception-style event or a seated dinner for 160. Additionally, there are seven private dining areas, two lounges, a live music room, and an outdoor patio. In the last 12 months, Munz and Roberts have upgraded and expanded the restaurant’s meeting and conference spaces, renovated the main dining area, and established a world-class bar whose selection of hundreds of bourbons and scotches has earned it a listing on Great Bourbon - Continued on Page 19 Bars of America.

NEW RESTAURANT ALERT

MALIBU STEAK AND AND SEAFOOD 6425 Broadway St Pearland, TX 77581 | 281-997-9999 The 12,000-square-foot Malibu Steak and Seafood opened late last month and has already received rave reviews for the atmosphere, concept and food as well as some specific praise for the talent of Executive Chef Cesar Paul. The impressive facility is strategically located on Broadway (FM 518) in the heart of Pearland with easy access to the South Beltway, Interstate 45, Highway 288 and Highway 35, positioning it as a dining destination from every direction. Malibu Director of Operations Sina Taheri (previously a chef at Cullen's American Grille) is quick to point out that a special occasion is not needed to visit the area’s newest fine (and fun) dining concept.

“We want to be different and not pretentious,” explained Taheri. “We want to focus on everybody, because we believe fine dining is when everyone is happy. We are kid friendly and whether you are in a sports uniform and cleats or a shirt and a tie, we welcome you to come in, enjoy yourself and eat some beautiful food.” No matter what your mission, there is a menu at Malibu for you. Patrons can order from the dinner menu that offers fresh fish flown in daily, Kobe steaks, certified Angus beef plus a host of signature entrees, all at “a more competitive price than offered elsewhere.” Other options include the oyster bar, a host of soups and salads and the patio/bar menu with tasty tapas developed for those just wanting to hang out. - Continued on Page 18

There are 70 large, flat screen TVs offering a great view from every seat. Even more awesome is that every booth has its own TV that is controlled by the customer. Think about this a bit further: Mom and Dad can watch the game on the multiple flat screens while the kids can watch cartoons. Enjoy the game; enjoy a good meal, and no kitchen clean-up. Bombshells shows college games, all Texans games, big NFL games and UFC fights. Keeping with the military theme, the menu fires off with “5-Star Starters” such as Texas Torpedoes (spicy cheddar cheese sticks rolled in crispy tortillas and deep fried), Bayonets (dill pickle spears lightly breaded and fried), Shrapnel (crispy golden fried jalapeños, fried okra, and onion straws served with chipotle ranch), Bomb Poppers (bacon wrapped, jalapeño stuffed shrimp served with a Southwestern cocktail sauce), and Stuffed Artillery Shells (fried potato skins). The “Aviator Wings” are the B-17 (traditional bone-in), the B-24 Liberator (bone-out) or Going Commando. The sauces are rated from Defcon 1 to 5. Choose the Nuclear, Hell Cat, Atomic, and Thunderbolt to name a few. It’s “Off To The Mess Hall” for your choice of sandwich such as the Carmen Miranda (grilled chicken breast tossed in a buffalo

There is a larger room available for banquets of up to 100 guests and a smaller private dining room perfect for business presentations or small groups of 20 or less. General Manager Kevin Congemi and Associate General Manager Alice Shepherd bring a wealth of corporate and international hospitality industry experience to the Malibu team and are already planning a number of special events and dinners in the coming months. patio complete with outdoor sofa and picnic tables.

“If you are looking for a warm and cozy room for your event,” suggested Roberts, “one of our Tuscan-themed rooms with the candle chandeliers and Bordeaux-finished brick ceiling are ideal. Our ballroom features a 35-foot ceiling and a massive crystal chandelier. The floor to ceiling silk curtains and suede-finished walls complete the look, which exudes great taste and refinement, without being stuffy.”

Other items to note about Bombshells are the entertainment and events. Listen to live music on Friday and Saturday nights. “Bike Night” is every Thursday from 7 p.m. to midnight. Bring in your helmet and receive a 20% discount off your meal. Enjoy a car meet-up every other Monday night. Take advantage of the “Fantasy Football Special,” too: Parties of 8 or more receive $50 in free food and non-alcoholic beverages with purchase!

No matter how big or small your vision, this is the venue that can help your event become a reality. And, that’s exactly what owners Kevin and Sandra Munz had in mind when they first opened Cullen’s, which is named after their son. Once you’ve figured out where in the Cullen’s compound you want to host your party, the menu selection offers even greater excitement. And, that’s where Executive David Coffman and his comrades come in. Chef Coffman should know how to please any crowd since his pre-Cullen’s experience included an extended stint at the C Lazy U Ranch and Resort in Colorado, where he served 300 to 500 diners nightly for nine years. “Special events at Cullen’s are unlike anywhere else,” observes Munz. “We have a facility that is unlike anything in the Bay Area and our service staff is second to none. The thank you letters that we get from guests about the wait staff and food will attest to that.”

The first Bombshells opened in Dallas in 2013. Since then Bombshells locations have opened in Austin, Spring and locally in Webster. The fifth Bombshells location will soon open just up the road in an 8,860-square-foot building at 12810 Gulf Freeway (between Fuqua and Beltway 8) in Houston. Bombshells designates their mission to make your visit a great time. Roger that!

Big changes are in the wind at Cullen’s, but Munz and Roberts want to assure their loyal legion of guests that the most familiar and appealing aspects of the Cullen’s experience will remain intact.

“You’ll see some exciting new things on the menu, and some new faces in the kitchen,” said Munz, “but we’re not changing what people tell us they love: The warmth and beauty of the facility, the quality of service, and the sensational tastes of our kitchen. But I will tell you this: You haven’t lived until you’ve tasted John Wesley’s ice cream.”

The GRITTY GODDESS Returns… October 11 Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run at Moody Gardens On Saturday, October 11, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5k (3.1 mile) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam, and props. “It’s a one-of-akind course”, says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” For the October event, a portion of the entry fee is donated to Girls On The Run of Greater Houston, a local charity which offers a life-skills learning program to girls aged 8-13. Participants can be-

come GOTR “Solemates” and participate in the Gritty Goddess to raise even more funds.

A recent addition to the Gritty Goddess event day is the “Gritty Guys Drag Race” at 1 p.m., which allows men to do the Gritty Goddess course, but only if they are dressed in drag. It’s guaranteed to provide the ladies with some extra entertainment! The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace, and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with

friends, family, or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will go off every 10 minutes starting at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then “create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae, and complimentary beer. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon with DJ Hexum. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun”, says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” The minimum age to participate in the Gritty Goddess is 10 years old, however, on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1k obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, aged 6-13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com or www.grittykids.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.”

Scotty’s Pub Is Damaged In Recent Fire In the wee hours of Friday, September 12, a fire damaged Scotty’s Pub, located at 10943 Scarsdale Blvd. within the heart of the South Belt area (just South of Beltway 8 in Southeast Houston). Firefighters say a fire began in the kitchen of a Mexican restaurant adjacent to Scotty’s Pub around 1:30 a.m. The flames spread through the roof into Scotty’s Pub next door. There were not any injuries, but Scotty’s Pub sustained damage due to the smoke and fire. “Building management has been working with us and the insurance company,” said Scott Sexton, owner of Scotty’s Pub. “Most of the damage we incurred was smoke related.” At press time, the work crews were about to start repairing the pub. Sexton is optimistic that Scotty’s Pub will be back open in mid-October. Scotty’s Pub, a popular neighborhood bar and restaurant, opened in April 2011.

Featured Artist: Helene Bernhard Little

By Kelley Dawson

Helene Bernard Little is BIG on color. “I love color and playing with it,” she said. The local artist creates contagious cheer with her watercolor works. Little’s paintings easily draw smiles as they captivate the viewer. Her palette mainly consists of bright, bold hues with such rich concentration it is difficult to accept as watercolor. Little explained she paints on a heavy, high-quality paper to attain the intensity. Apparently, Little’s family heritage is as colorful as her paintings. Her family tree consists of a soldier in the Spanish American war, a Texas Ranger, and the Luckenbachs. Little told she been drawing and painting since early childhood. According to Little, her father didn’t want her to study art at school. She, therefore, earned a degree in architecture and construction science at Texas A&M with a Masters in real estate. “I worked in the corporate world for 25 years. I was burned out,” stated Little. Her first non-juried art show was just a year ago, though, she has participated in several juried shows. She said after the first “real art show,” it’s taken off like crazy.” Little, a single mom with four kids, decided to give up the security of a steady paycheck to pursue her love of painting. Little proudly expressed how blessed she is by God and her children’s continued support and encouragement “to do what you love.” Her perspective on material things also changed after Hurricane Ike when Little said she lost 80 percent of everything. “Life is short. Things don’t mean that much. It’s better to be happy,” she added. Little often shares her gratitude in the form of donating paintings to charities and silent auctions. Once Little starts a painting, she said, “I want to stay focused to finish it. I want to see the outcome.” Little revealed her best selling paintings: “Sounds funny, but, longhorns and nudes.” She said she took drawing classes when her schedule allowed at A&M in order to become proficient at human form. The Bay Area provides some nautical inspiration for Little; though, she prides herself in being a “Little” bit different. A native of Kerville, Little is often inspired by the large ranches and wildlife of her hometown. She currently paints many animal portraits as well, and said she enjoys the new niche. Besides watercolors and commissioned pieces, Little provides limited addition prints of her works. She said, “I learned at art festivals to be a successful artist, prints are a must,” Little stated it gives the opportunity for more people to enjoy her art. Little has many art shows coming up including the Bayou City Art Festival October 11 and the Houston Fine Art Festival November 2. Visit her page for commissions or prints at www.facebook.com/helene.little.50 or call 832-425-8587.

After the races on Sat., Nov. 1, there will be a Pool Party which will feature a shrimp boil and music by local band L.C. Roots & Co. The First warning signal for all racers will be at 10 am both days. The Awards Ceremony will be held in the ballroom at 4 pm on Sun. For those wishing to sail in the J/Fest, the entry deadline is Fri., Oct. 17 at 5 pm. The reg-

J/Fest Southwest Regatta Chairman Al Goethe of Lakewood Yacht Club announced that Rodney Johnstone, cofounder of J/Boats, Inc., will again attend and participate in this year’s regatta slated for Sat., Nov. 1, and Sun., Nov. 2, on Galveston Bay. “The Johnstone family has made an undeniable mark on the world of sailing,” remarked Goethe. In addition to over 5,400 J-24’s cruising the waves, there are over 7,000 more J/Boats ranging from the International J/22 to the new J/70 and J/88. The story began in 1975 when Johnstone, then an ad salesman for the sailing trade magazine Soundings, decided to build a sailboat he had been designing since the 1960s. With $400 worth of fiberglass and wood, he built the 24’ x 9’ J/24 “Ragtime” in his three car garage in Stonington, Connecticut. During the summer of 1976, with an all family crew, “Ragtime” beat everything in sight. It was then that

Johnstone realized that he had created something special – and the story continues today.

It’s billed as America’s second-largest craft beer festival, and it is coming to Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center this month with more than 1,000 brews. Called Big Brew and announced in January with a press conference featuring Houston Mayor Annise D. Parker, Big Brew will occupy more than 100,000-square-feet of George R. Brown on Saturday, according to co-producer Clifton McDerby. He expects about 3,500 to 4,000 people during each session of the main events held October 23-25. The week of fun begins with dinners and tastings at various locales around the Bayou City from October 20-22. “One of the things we hope to do is show off Houston,” explained McDerby. “Our goal is to build this into a destination beer event with people coming from all over the country.” McDerby said Big Brew is modeled after the Great American Beer Festival. According to McDerby, Big Brew has been a work in progress for three years. He and his wife Constance have produced numerous other tasting events around Houston, including the BrewMasters Craft Beer Festival in Galveston and the Katy Sip and Stroll for wine enthusiasts to name a few. Craft beer has injected over $2.3 billion into Texas’ state economy — which is home to the third-fastest growing independent craft beer market, according to the Brewers Association.

Oct. 23 - 6-9 p.m. - The Great Match - Gourmand and Grains - Houston’s top culinary talent are spotlighted in this fine tasting experience where each chef’s preparation is paired with craft beers for a taste bud blowout. Oct. 24 - 6-9 p.m. - Texas Brewed - Texas Breweries Showcase - 40 Texas breweries and thier “A” teams show their Texas pride as they share their unique selections. Oct. 24 - Suds in the City - Houston Pub Crawl Buses - Board the bus to visit some of the best craft beer destinations, party spots and pubs in Houston. Oct. 25 - 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 10 p.m. - Big Brew Grand Tasting Sessions - Enjoy over 1,000 craft beers featuring Spec’s University Seminar Stage, interactive displays and music and more. IN FROM THE COLD – I scored a copy of Jeff Tillman’s new CD, “In From The Cold.” I wish my predecessor, Jim Shortt was still around to do this review. But will do my best… Produced by Phillip Shanks with all music and lyrics by Jeff, this nine-song collection chronicles life and experiences with an open and frank honesty that seems suited the every person. The opening song, Everybody’s Gone describes the return of a young man from college to find everybody he grew up with has left seeking their own fame and fortune, the emptiness, the uncertainties of moving on, and the uncertain revelation to take root and make a stand – I’m sure many have felt this before, so this song applies well. The second song, Young, Wild and Free is a song that should set off flashbacks to the listeners who tried their hand at relationships earlier in life – A tempting song to try on the jukebox should you ever bump into your lover from decades past while out and about. No regrets…. The third song, Summer Boy, easily suits well as soundtrack material for the coming of age movies. It plays only 5 minutes in length and spans easy, an entire “endless” summer. This song needs to get discovered by film people… Hey Hey, My My presents Jeff’s crisp articulate and turnaround skills in an upbeat manner that should be sung out loud and heard often. Kings and Queens takes a bold look into society, taking a high-road approach through the inequities, which doesn’t exactly qualify as a protest song, but a song of taking and making a stand. In my opinion, this song could be rearranged with lots of loud and angry electric guitars and banging drums, but instead, it’s clear and easy to listen to. I’m guessing the song Natalee is probably supposed to be a simple recollection of a passage from days passed. This song sort of blew my mind as it fit perhaps too well in too many places. Crisp and clean – A beautiful presentation! Overall, the production of this CD was refreshing and appreciated. Listening to the collection at the designated 85 db, the mix blended well with plenty of room for the music to breathe, light on the compression allowing the mind to expand instead of getting squeezed. Local musicians should seek Jeff for a copy of this album for an example of a well-mastered product.

Madigan @ Jackie’s Brickhouse

Loose Notes: Continued from Page 45 OVER THE TOP – Readers know that over the years, we’ve been keeping a loose track on Madigan belting out the shows throughout the area. I’ll ‘fess that I’m a lover of the game of golf and – hang with me folks – this band reminds me of a scratch player year in and year out swings a one-iron, ever tweaking their routine with the addition of Jeremy Walton and Mike McColloch in the bag, pounds 300-plus yard drives with Jedi Knight Fulks on the kit, keeping it all in play with Dale on the desk, sizzling the180 yard approach shots within inches with Dave’s liquid iron sound, and Melissa never afraid to try her chops on some new song – All of them coming together and coming through big when it counts. On the last Saturday in September, we caught Madigan and McColloch’s birthday night at Jackie’s Brickhouse with what was described as nothing less as an Madigan @ epic evening of concert Jackie’s Brickhouse rock, frenzied fans, musical confidence oozing song after song, and crazy outright fun by everybody there (yup, we were with you!) – which scores Madigan and Jackie’s Brickhouse as Over The Top for the month of September. Bravo! IT’S A WRAP – Okay Folks! We’re turning the corner into the final quarter of the year 2014. With that, comes the start of the nine-month stretch I like to call Snow Bird season – our best time of the year – and time to get out of the air conditioning and into the world we call The SCENE. Thanks for taking the time to chat and share your stories. Keep it going, and keep shining on!!!

Tale of Two Gio’s Continued from Page 51

Probably, the best part about having an open restaurant, though, is the ability to sneak a peek behind the scenes. Gio’s serves traditional, New York-style flying pizzas. Guests have the opportunity to watch the cooks “fly” the pizza – spinning the dough through the air – sauté ingredients and grill meats. With ingredients prepared fresh daily, you can bet the pies will be bursting with flavor. The “Kitchen Sink” pizza special features pepperoni, bacon, hamburger, green peppers, onions, mushrooms and black olives. Other specialties include the Meatball Formaggio, topped with mozzarella, Parmesan and provolone cheeses, with a sprinkle of oregano, or the classic Margherita, with extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella, sliced Roma tomatoes and fresh basil. Healthier whole-wheat alternatives to traditional pizza dough and pastas are also available upon request. Gio’s also offers a half-pound hamburger that will inspire pure bliss. The Choice Burger is made with New York strip trimmings, filet tips, and 8(0/20) top beef sir-

loin. It is served with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and a side of waffle fries. Along with quality food, Gio’s takes great care to ensure that, according to owner Steve Gunnett, “every last customer walks out happy.” Since the age of 15, Steve has been working in Italian restaurants, even owning two previous establishments. When he was a kid, the Italian cooks called him “Gio.” Steve, and his wife Diana, designed the restaurant from the ground up and Gio’s is the culmination of all those years of experience. But Diana is quick to credit her employees, “Our ded-

icated, diligent staff has been a vital component in Gio’s increasing success.” Anytime is the right to time to visit Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta. For lunch or dinner that will truly satisfy at a reasonable price, Gio’s is definitely a good choice. But, if you cannot make it to Gio’s, they take customer service a bit further and deliver their entire menu (specials and all) within a 6-mile radius. Gio’s is and open Mondays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

SOUTHPAWS - About a year ago, I suggested to keep eye out for Southpaw guitarists, the ones who play on right-handed guitars. Chris Elliot is one of these types as their unorthodox style is a sign of considerable talent and perseverance. Another of such a type of player is Rob Saint, whom I first Rob Saint caught at Cock-eyed Seagull with Review @ the 007 Band. In September, we Noah’s Ark caught Rob and his band on the upper deck of Noah’s Ark and on both evenings, I was blown away with the lucid fluidic playing style for song after song after song of no playlist, nonstop medley’s – Truly brilliant… Rob Saint – Keep your ears peeled for him and try on a set (you can probably catch him at Noah’s or Katie’s). Chances are Rob Saint Review @ Noah’s Ark you’ll probably stay the evening…

ple vocalists. Nonetheless, the sound was very good this evening. HOMETOWN MEDICINE - About a year ago, I got the chance to cover the debut of Soul In Tension at Scout Bar and was impressed not only with their clever name, strong play list of originals, but moreover their hometown following from Sante Fe who came out to see them and help propel SIT to amongst the top of local new bands for 2013. On the last Saturday in September, we stopped in to Scout Bar again as SIT headlined the evening. Coupled with their energetic style (wish they would try jumping off the monitors a bit more often) was a solid perSoul In Tension @ Scout Bar formance which can only develop by getting out and playing (something Scout Bar has been great for with young local bands) and a larger and ever-strong crowd out to cheer them on. When I watch a bands following, I tend to skip over how well they head bob and fist pump in unison to the rhythm, but eye how many of their fans who can actually sing along the words to original songs, which to me is a truer sign of a strong following. Soul In Tension has it.

BACLIFF’S MUSIC HALL Which of course would be Katie’s. We’ve been reporting how Bob and Katie re-feng Shui’d the old post office into a music appreciation room and happy to report steady growing bunch of regulars to catch whoever is playing. In September, we took in a few sets of the Paul Ramirez Band and can testify an ever-growing audience of appreciative music lovers getting in their fix of Blues, R&B, Rock at Katie’s, where – unlike the inner loop establishments –never charge a cover… Paul Ramirez Band @ Katie’s

NEW MEDICINE – I was walking through the parking lot at T-Bone Tom’s when I saw disco lights from the Landshark Stage flashing over the fence and heard Donna Summers crystal clear through the air, thinking “Hmm… Just when did T-Bone’s started booking DJs…” Entering the patio, blow me away! There’s no DJ, but Still Cruisin’ on stage belting out some of the crispest, clearest sounds these ears have ever heard from the stage. With enough JBL’s to blow out small arena, this snazzy band from Beaumont sports only one mutual Facebook Friend, Jerry Diaz, and they like the music of Bobby Kimball and The Texas Frog Fest. Okay, so they do Facebook different than other bands but man, can they play! Perhaps the best kept secret of the summer: Still Cruisin’ at T-Bone Tom’s…. Check ’em out!! Still Cruisin’ - Continued on Page 43 @ T-Bone Tom’s

STEADY MEDICINE - We stopped in at Sherlock’s in September and just like clockwork, the crowds started to arrive around 11. It’s clearly a place for the late night life. On stage was Rat Ranch sounding better than usual. Seems like their soundman has been taking advantage of the new technologies with an iPad mixer sitting out in the audience getting the sound right where we all tend to sit. I like how these mobile sound boards let the Front of House sound mixers roam the room, but not sure how user-friendly they are having to scroll and toggle between different screens, especially for bands featuring a variety of leads and multi-

OCTOBER 2014

The Tale of Two Gio’s By Rhonda Meredith There is always something going on at Gio’s Flying Pizza & Pasta. Gio’s, located at 650 FM 517 W. in Dickinson, is great place to bring a date, watch a sporting event, enjoy a fun family meal, or just about any other occasion you can think of. After being in business for more than five years, Gio’s knows a thing or two about freshly made flying pizzas. But based on the restaurant’s name, you may not know Gio’s serves a great selection of fine Italian specialties. These uncommon items you wouldn’t expect on the menu at just a “pizza place” and with prices that are family friendly. Made from scratch and prepared on-site, the food at Gio’s is a dynamic blend of Italian tastes. Popular dishes on the menu include the Penne Civitavecchia “Roma” (penne pasta tossed with diced grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, feta cheese, garlic, basil, and olive oil), Chicken Gio’s (grilled chicken breast topped with gravy and mushrooms, butter, marsala wine, and provolone), the Luca Brazi (grilled salmon topped with artichokes, capers and lemon sauce, served with sauteed veggies), Porcini Ravioli (stuffed with porcini mushrooms, sauteed with olive oil, zucchini, squash, red bell pepper, sundried tomatoes and basil, topped with feta), or the Tilapia Bianco (seasoned and grilled, then topped with a butter, garlic and white wine sauce and shrimp, served with a side of capellini with garlic and basil, and sauteed veggies).

Enjoy your meal with the taste of Gio’s house wine at only $4 a glass. In addition to the high-quality food, Gio’s has ambience one might not expect. The exterior facade of Gio’s is modest; however, those who stop in are in for a treat.

There are also items off the menu you can delight in. Opt for the Pork Valdostana (provolone-stuffed, grilled pork ribeye in a Valdostana gravy with mushrooms and artichokes, with a side of veggies and potatoes), ribeye steak (seasoned and grilled to order, with rosemary potatoes and sautéed veggies), and the Salmon Pescatore (served in a sherry cream sauce, with shrimp, tomatoes and olive oil, served on capellini pasta, with sauteed veggies).

Upon entering, customers are welcomed by an upscale, modern decor with a casual atmosphere complete with a new brick wall. The open design is ideal for families and large groups, though booths aligning the walls provide a more intimate environment. Toward the back of the restaurant, there’s a bar (that seats 30 people) with ten beers on tap and high-top tables, surrounded by four flat-screens, making it a great place to have an adult beverage, wings, burger, mozzarella sticks, or toasted ravioli while watching the game. This “sports side” has happy-hour prices on Sunday and Monday nights. During the Texans’ games, wear the team colors or logo (jersey, t-shirt, or cap, for example), and receive happy hour pricing throughout the restaurant as well. - Continued On Page 44

GIO’S FOR DELIVERY OR CATERING: Did you know Gio’s has a separate catering menu that’s perfect for large gatherings off-site, such as birthdays, weddings, business functions, church and school events. Co-owner Diana Gunnett is the first point of contact and actually serves at the weddings. For those wanting to just pick up large trays of food for an event and feed a minimum of 10 people for not a lot of money, Gio’s is happy to provide everything: plates, cutlery, serving utensils, beverages, ice, cups, and everything else you will need. If you can’t pick it up, Gio’s will deliver. Contact Gio’s for delivery or catering at 281-337-0107; and view the catering and party tray menu at www.giosflyingpizza.com.

Experience. Mandi has been in the industry for eight years. Three of those years have been bartending with two years being at R&R. Signature Drink? A Bloody Mary. The trick is to just keep it simple. I say “candy,” and she says… “Eeewwww!” But, Mandi does love chocolate! And she does make a drink that tastes like Skittles is very good. The ingredients to that tasty concoction are Dragonberry flavored Bacardi Rum, Sprite, and lime juice. Halloween. Mandi enjoys the holiday and dresses up as someone silly usually. In past years she was Tom Cruise (Risky Business) and Elvis. This year, she plans on being George Michael from his “Gotta Have Faith” era. Most memorable costume she has seen: A “One Night Stand.” A lady was literally dressed as a night stand. Sports fan! Literally on the day of the interview, Mandi had on a Texans t-shirt (pictured.) She enjoys watching the Rangers and the Rockets, too.

Where: 6425 Broadway Street Pearland When: Monday - Friday 4-7pm What: 1/2 off all beer, select wines discounted to $4 per glass.

Football means cooler weather is coming… Mandi gets all happy thinking about hoodies. In her “spare” time: As a mother to four boys, Mandi does not have a lot of free time, but she does enjoy going to high school football games. But when Mandi does have a moment to herself… She enjoys watching comedies such as The Goldbergs and Parks & Recreation.

THE DML CARTEL: Who You Need To Know About Right Now By Rhonda Meredith The DML Cartel likes to push the boundaries of music, rather than be limited by them. The Houston-based rock and roll hybrid, utilize their diverse musical influences to reach well outside the traditional territory of rock music. This has created a huge interest, and their fan base has been growing exponentially. The DML Cartel is taking over the Bay Area. Founder and frontman Dodd Michael Lede prefers to blend genres together to create something unique. Their songs convey a compelling combination of rich pop layers mixed among elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, and rock, combine flawlessly, making for a dynamic and versatile musical journey––an autobiography of true stories set to music that are stirring and evocative. “Beyond The First Kiss” (2012) is the latest DML Cartel release. When asked what his favorite song on the CD is, Lede responds, “Each of those songs are like children to me. I love them all. But when it comes to live performance, I get a kick out of "I'm The One." But he does have a special place in his heart Catch The DML Cartel performing at Cabo’s four-year anniversary party on Saturday, November 15 presented by Punkstar. The parking lot party and festivities begins at 3 p.m.

for "Let It Go & Wave Goodbye." He explained, “I wrote that song for my mother shortly after she had passed away in 2008.” Another popular song from The DML Cartel that has become a sort of battle cry is “Release The Bulls.” This anthem is an ode to our Houston Texans football team. “It is safe to say that we are all Texans fans. So when Jude Cwalenski (drums) challenged me to write a battle song for the Texans, I felt obliged to rise up to the task. Then we jumped into the studio with Mike BBQ to fast-track the song so that we could release it.” Recently, The DML Cartel performed at Scout Bar. “Scout Bar is always a blast to play,” said Lede. “They have an amazing sound system and a killer light show. - Continued on Page 36
