February was another fantastic month for Galactic Coast Brewing with many highlights. First, our increased brewing schedule and new brite tanks allowed us to add Tbone Tom's, just off celebrating the popular Kemah restaurant's 40th birthday, to the list of venues offering our brew on tap. The list of venues offering GCB on draft will grow in March as we plan to add some spots in cities The GCB Team had a blast at the “I Heart Beer Festival” celebrating the DRINK we have yet to touch down in. Adding to the OF AGES (92FM) radio show’s anniversary at the House of Blues last month. fun in February was our participation in the "I Heart Beer Festival" celebrating the Anniversary of the Drink of Ages (92FM) radio show at the House of Blues in downtown Houston. The event, only our second appearance inside the Loop, and the music was awesome, and we were blown away by the positive feedback from Houston-area craft beer enthusiasts who had not yet had the opportunity to try our beer. We also enjoyed meeting a lot of our "brothers in brew" from other Texas craft breweries. Make sure you “like” us on Facebook to stay up to date on Galactic Coast Brewing. Cheers!

4th Annual Kemah Crawfish Festival March 21, 22 & 23 • Kemah Lighthouse District On the perpetually breezy shores of Galveston Bay, the annual Kemah Crawfish Festival (presented by Gulf Coast Festivals and the City of Kemah) will take place on March 21, 22, and 23 in Kemah’s Lighthouse District. The festival combines festival food, beverages, rides, crafts, fun and live music with its signature attraction: fresh-boiled crawfish. The festival's cooks will prepare and cook in brand new stations, capable of producing 6,000 pounds of hot crawfish every hour. This incredible rate of production should significantly shorten waits in lines. This year, crawfish will be sold by the pound. As bellies are getting filled with $3.50-per-pound crawfish, guests can take in live entertainment by many musical acts including headliner, Grammy Award winning Wayne Toups on March 21 (7 to 10 p.m.), presented by Baytown Ford.

The Friday night entertainment kicks off at 5 p.m. with T Broussard and The Zydeco Stepper. Then at 8 p.m. the Pee Wee Bowen Band steps in to close out the evening. Saturday, Irie Time sets the festival mood starting at noon; from 4 p.m. to 6:30, The Relics warm up the crowd leading up to Wayne Toups’ performance at 7 p.m. Sunday’s enterLive Music Line-up tainers play for three hours each: Zydeco Dots begin at noon and the Friday, March 21 String Benders round out the evening 5-7:30pm ......T Broussard & starting at 3 p.m. - Continued on Page 13

Pickup, Delivery or Dine In - We Want Pizza! Pomodoro’s Pasta & Pizzeria: Pomodoro’s knows a thing or two about Brooklyn style pizzas and authentic Italian cuisine. The word “pomodoro” even means “tomato” in Italian! The restaurant delivers their full menu within an approximate 5-mile radius and up to their side of the Kemah Bridge. Step into the “fresh zone” and order a specialty or build-your-own pizzas, hot subs, calzones, vegetarian entrees, enjoy the fresh seafood in their “Linguine Pomodoro ala Tina,” “Shrimp Pomodor,” “Penne Pomodoro,” and classics like chicken or veal parmesan, lasagna, and fettuccine Alfredo. Pasta is served with a garden or Caesar salad and garlic bread. Pomodoro’s opens every day at 11 a.m.

TOOKIE’S SEAFOOD BREAKS GROUND

Tookie’s Seafood, 1102 Bayport Avenue in Seabrook, invited the community to witness and participate in their groundbreaking ceremony in early March. “We expect to open around September 2014 if everything goes according to plan,” said owner Barry Terrell. “Tookie’s Seafood will be a casual full-service restaurant with a beach house / nautical feel. It will have an open kitchen, so you can see us grilling your seafood on the mesquite wood grill and watch us shuck your oysters. We will also feature New Orleans-style grilled oysters, fried Gulf seafood, a full bar with various beers on tap and good wines.” Terrell and his wife Melissa are known restaurateurs. They purchased Kemah’s T-Bone Tom’s in February of 1999, and then purchased and re-opened Tookie’s Hamburgersin Seabrook in August 2011 after a thorough post-Ike reconstruction.

We Want Pizza • Continued From Page 10 Nick's Pizza and Gelato: Tempting dishes are made fresh every day at Nick’s Pizza. The cozy eatery guarantees only delicious food and dependable services because their patrons deserve nothing less. There is something for everyone on the menu. Enjoy complimentary bread and seasoned, appetizers like Stuffed Mushroom Caps (huge mushrooms are stuffed with fresh crab meat, spinach, green onion, and Italian seasoned breadcrumbs, then topped with a creamy Alfredo sauce, sprinkled with fresh crab meat and chopped Roma tomatoes), or Nick’s Signature Fritto Mixto (fried calamari, shrimp, and zucchini with a special sauce). The ricotta calzones are made to perfection, as are the grilled paninis. A few choices for pasta entrees are Shrimp al Diablo, Spaghetti a la Nick (spaghetti sautéed in olive oil, garlic mushrooms, sausage, meatballs in a marinara sauce), Veal Piccata or Scalopini, and Penne Arrabiata (penne pasta sautéed in a spicy marinara sauce with grilled chicken). Crowning Nick’s menu are the scrumptious pizzas. Save room for dessert! Gelato is Italy's version of American ice cream, but is a bit richer and creamier. Eat in and be treated well by servers who want to make your visit memorable. Delivery hours are Sunday through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Your satisfaction is their top priority. vor. Pizza toppings range from the “Kitchen Sink,” the “Meat Special,” the “Veggie Special”, the classic “Margherita,” the “Blanco” (an Alfredo based white pizza, topped with parmesan, mozzarella and provolone) to the “Meatball Formaggio,” topped with mozzarella, Parmesan and provolone cheeses, with a sprinkle of oregano. Healthier whole-wheat alternatives to traditional pizza dough and pastas are also available upon request. The great thing about a pizza place is that they typically deliver. Gio’s takes it a step further and delivers their entire menu — specials and all — within a 5-mile radius. Popular items on the menu include the Chicken Gio’s, Porcini Ravioli, Tilapia Bianco, Luca Brazi (grilled salmon topped with artichokes, capers and lemon sauce, served with sautéed veggies), Pork Valdostana (provolone stuffed, grilled pork rib eye in a Valdostana gravy with mushrooms and artichokes, with a side of veggies and potatoes), or the Salmon Pescatore (served in a sherry cream sauce, with shrimp, tomatoes and olive oil, served on capellini pasta, with sautéed veggies). Gio’s is open Monday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

By Kelley Dawson It’s hard to believe someone would describe sitting in jail for almost a month the best three weeks of their life. But, the same someone put his consciousness to the canvas and turned his passion into his career. Local artist, Lee E. Wright discovered during his time in jail that he alone could make his thoughts his reality. Wright stated his self-realization path steered him from being a homeless, undereducated, borderline alcoholic to becoming a clean, better-educated, successful artist. “Working past the past and moving forward,” Wright said. He added, “I know my weaknesses and work to overcome those.

And I paint.” Wright grew up in La Porte where he said he would draw pictures he studied from an old Encyclopedia collection “over, and over, and over.” Wright told it was how he passed his time as he didn’t have many toys; only pencil and paper. Wright shared that he is his own worst critic and always finds fault in his work. “I’m never one hundred percent satisfied,” he said. Either there is truth to “art in imperfection,” or the countless admirers and gallery owners don’t find the flaws Wright sees in his paintings. Currently, Wright has an art studio in the Heights as well as works in the Longnecker Gallery in Houston. Additionally, the George H. W. Bush library’s art collection houses Wright’s work. His oil paintings are displayed all over the world including a gallery in Tokyo, Japan. Wright’s painting style is uniquely edgy. The intent of the lighting and strategic shading captures your attention and manipulates your

mood. Often mysterious, you can’t help but wonder if the mood is dark or bright or possibly both? The intriguing subjects of Wright’s paintings beg for more than a glance. Actually, it’s difficult to look away as you have so many questions and you hope by gazing just a while longer that the answers will be granted to you. In fact, the artist stated he wants the viewers of his paintings to “linger and see the hidden nuances and ponder the meaning behind the beauty.”

“DAY BY THE BAY” HOME TOUR

By Peggy “Domino” Taylor

T

he Houston Symphony League Bay Area will present its yearly home tour and party March 21, 22 and 23. This volunteer organization plans and works all year for this spring event. Don’t miss an opportunity to tour inside the beautiful Jim West Mansion on NASA Parkway at Space Center Blvd. as it will be on the Houston Symphony League Bay Area’s 13th Annual “Day by the Bay” Home Tour. The West Mansion has an Italian Renaissance elevation designed by Joseph Finger in 1929 and built in 1930 with Art Deco designs in the bathrooms, Palm room, sun and family rooms. The wood craftsmanship, the Venetian tiles, ceiling, dome, and the view from the top of the stairs are such a tribute to that bygone era. Jim West was an oil and cattle baron who owned much of what is now the Clear Lake area. Many of the original materials are still in the building because it was protected by the Historic Society until Hakeem Olajuwon bought it for retail purposes and named it “Dr34M.” - Continued on Page 22 #2 BAY AREA MUSEUM: Originally built in 1901 as the Webster Presbyterian Church, the building was moved to its current location in Clear Lake Park in 1981. Bay Area Museum is a long-term project of the Lunar Rendezvous. Often referred to as "The Little White Church in the Park," it is now a venue for events and it houses many exhibits of historical interest to the Clear Lake area. #3 122 LAZYWOOD LANE: This post-Hurricane Ike home uses "nature" as its theme in construction and decorating. The décor blends "new" and "old" in warm and inviting ways. The owners are masterful in combining styles, as well as re-purposed and antique furnishings. #4 1034 SHOREWOOD DRIVE: This is the eighth house for the homeowners and is a "vision realized." They took the best from their previous homes, incorporated new ideas, and the result is evident--a warm and inviting home. Tour guests will find creative use of furnishings and decorative pieces, combining architectural pieces with antiques and "finds." #5 1050 SHOREWOOD DRIVE: "Timeless Elegance" best describes this stunning home. Completed in 2004, the home is situated on property with 120 feet of waterfront and an unparalleled view of Taylor Lake. An outstanding collection of fine bronzes compliments the fine furnishings in the home. #6 2603 BAYVIEW: This is a truly exceptional home with an incomparable view of Galveston Bay. Although this house is grand in scale (three stories), it has a feeling of elegant intimacy and comfort. Attention to detail is evident throughout the home. Tour guests will enjoy a museum-quality art collection.

Houston Symphony League Bay Area concert to feature FRANK HUANG as leader/soloist By Peggy “Domino” Taylor

Grammy Award winning Ying Quartet, which was selected by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to be a member of the prestigious Chamber Music II program. He serves on the faculty at Rice University and the University of Houston and teaches at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Texas Music Festival, and the Great Mountains Music Festival in South Korea. He serves as the concertmaster and leader of the Sejong Soloists, a conductorless chamber orchestra based in New York.

The Houston Symphony’s Centennial Season performance is coming to our Bay Area. The Houston Symphony League Bay Area is sponsoring this March 15 (7:30 p.m.) performance at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 18220 Upper Bay Road, Nassau Bay, and is excited that Frank Huang, concertmaster, will play a double role in the program, both as leader and soloist. He will enthrall you with his brilliant technique, precision and artistry in Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and in Vivaldi’s eternal masterpiece, The Four Seasons.

Experience a live performance of two exhilarating works in which the Houston Symphony’s string section will take the limelight.

Mr. Huang joined the Houston Symphony as concertmaster in 2010. A native of Sugarland, he has played and won violin competitions all over the world, beginning at age 11. He’s performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and on NPR’s Performance Today, Good Morning America and CNN’s American Morning. An esteemed chamber musician, Mr. Huang held the position of first violinist of the

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at www.houstonsymphony.org or with Houston Symphony League Bay Area members and at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church between Sunday morning worship services. HSLBA general meeting will be at Gloria Dei on March 12 at 10 a.m.

“Day by the Bay” Home Tour: Continued From Page 21 Publicity Chair for HSLBA, Nina McGlashan states, “This is a very exceptional home tour this year that includes the magnificent Jim West Mansion. A lot of people say, ‘I wonder what it looks like inside.’ Now, there is an opportunity to see what this 1929 home looks like and the Bay Area Museum originally built in 1901. The other homes are fabulous but a lot newer!” Proceeds from this event are their major "Day by the Bay" Home Tour Co-Chairs (l-r) Pat Biddle and Vicki Buxton make plans at the West fundraiser for Mansion for the March 22 & 23 event. Another home on the tour is a church home that was the original Webster Presbyterian Church (1911) and today is the Bay Area Museum, often referred to as “The Little White Church in the Park.” It’s in Clear Lake Park next door to the West Mansion and will be open for the tour. Four other homes that are ‘younger’ will be available, three in the Timber Cove section of Taylor Lake Village and one in Bayview. These homes incurred damages from Ike, and one was redesigned when it needed rebuilding in the owner’s vision. The homes are truly unique, waterfront homes that have different styles, elevations, and designs and this is also an opportunity to view the different decades of home building, furnishings, accessories, and construction.

Pre-tour Party Home - 708 Courtesy Lane A pre-tour party will be a kick-off on Friday, March 21, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person, which includes the tour. GRITTY GODDESS Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run returns to Moody Gardens, April 26 On Saturday, April 26, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women, and women only, who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5K(3.1-mile-) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course,” says Event Director Claire Jordan, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” For the April event, there will be lots of new surprises, including the “Cliff Hanger” obstacle and even more mud. Another new addition is the “Gritty Guys Drag Race” at 1:30 p.m., which allows men to do the Gritty Goddess course, but only if they are dressed in drag. It’s guaranteed to provide the ladies with some extra entertainment! The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive so participants can complete the course at their own pace and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will start every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m., and each wave bears the name of a famous goddess like Aphrodite, Athena, and Venus. Teams must register as individuals for the same time/wave and then

“create” or “join” a team during their individual registration process. After completing the course, women can shower, change clothes, relax and enjoy an ice cream sundae and a complimentary beer. The entry fee also includes entry to Palm Beach for the afternoon, and the “GLOW GODDESS” after-party on Saturday evening, with DJ Hexum and glow necklaces for everyone. “This event is all about camaraderie, challenging yourself physically, and most of all having a full day of fun,” says Jordan, “because every woman deserves a day off!” Although the minimum age to participate is 14 years old, the last two waves of the Gritty Goddess at 12:50 p.m and 1 p.m. allow girls aged 8 to 13 to participate in the full 5K with their mothers, older sisters, or female guardians as part of the Goddess + Nymph Challenge. Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. there is also the GRITTY KIDS event, a shorter 1K obstacle/mud run for all children, both male and female, ages 6 to 13. For more information and to register, go to www.grittygoddess.com. You can also find them on Facebook at “Gritty Goddess Obstacle Run.”

STATE OF THE WEDNESDAY By Scott Tuma, Principal Race Officer The Clear Lake Racing Association is an informal association of sailing enthusiasts from all the sailing clubs around the Houston/Galveston Bay area. During the months of April through October (during Daylight Savings Time), there is enough light left over in the day for us to get off work, and head for the docks to launch our boats and get in a sailboat race. Wednesday Nights Races are a wonderful mid-week break, and the short distances between marks provide a great venue to sharpen boat and sail handling skills. After the race, everyone gathers at the Villa Capri Restaurant where trophies are presented. Weekly trophies are generous food credits from the Villa Capri. The Wednesday Night Races began in the late 70’s, started by a boat broker whose primary goal was, of course, to sell boats.

NIGHT RACES

The boats entered in the races were different from each other, so a time-on-distance (PHRF) handicap method was used to determine winners. The broker was generous enough to serve as organizer, race committee, handicapper, and score-keeper, and the prizes were quite nice... dinner for two at local waterfront restaurants. As a result, the event became very popular. After a while, the sailors began to notice that at least one of the broker's boats did fairly well every week. After requesting to see the scoresheet, it was noticed that the distance of the course changed from week to week. This would have been ok if different courses were sailed, but the course was always the same. After much howling, the broker agreed to an oversight committee, and the event became even more popular. - Continued on Next Page

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES • CONTINUED Today, the rating system has evolved to a time-on-time format where race committee and racers, do not need to know the course distance, just how long they raced. Courses have evolved as well; America’s Cup style short windward/leewards, larger rectangles with long reaches, and a fixed course for beginners. There are Wednesday Night Sailboat Races held all over the country. The ones held in Clear Lake are unique because some of the marks are placed close to spectator docks. So close, in fact, the spectators get a really good look at the team work required to get the jib up and douse the spinnaker. Yacht races are not known as a spectator sport, but when they are viewed in the comfort and proximity of a convenient dock (instead of the middle of a large body of water), it can be quite entertaining. Throw in a couple of friends, a warm sunset, and your favorite beverage, and you get a casual, relaxing experience for the middle of the week. Along with entry fees, CLRA is funded by the sponsorship of the following local companies: Alliance Plumbing, Banks Sails/North Canvas, The Boater’s Resale Shop, The Classic Café, Blackburn Marine, BM Boatworks, Quantum Sail Design Group, Hayes Rigging, Waterline Works, North Sails Texas, Meeks Marine, Little Yacht Sales, Sacketts Sailing, Turtle Club Boat Fashions, KO Sailing, Galveston Bay Foundation, Intergulf, and West Marine. Several other companies sponsor individual boats which can be seen on their sails each week. As always and appreciated, reciprocated support was given by Houston Yacht Club, Lakewood Yacht Club and Galveston Bay Cruising Association. Last year there were around fifty boats

sailing every Wednesday evening, in eight different classes: PHRF Non-Spinnaker, Novice Non-Spinnaker, Sunfish, Portsmouth, FJ’s, Catalina 22, J22, J24, J80 and PHRF Spinnaker. This year the J80 class on the bay will be replaced with a PHRF Asymmetrical Spinnaker class on the lake.

W

In PHRF Non-Spinnaker, small keelboats race without the complexity of the challenging large downwind sail called the spinnaker. One of the new classes presented for 2012, was a PHRF Non-Spinnaker B class. This is a perfect class for novices and for those with not a lot of racing experience. The PHRF Non-Spinnaker B class became a very popular and growing class, with an average of 4 boats every week and a range of eight different design boats racing through-out the year. The Sunfish Class is a great small one design boat that attracts some of our best sailors. The Portsmouth Handicap provides a class in which a variety of performance, small-boat designs can race against each other. With the support of Lakewood Yacht Club and Bay Access, a very popular Flying Junior (FJ) class has formed as well. To learn more about Bay Access and their program, please visit their web site at www.bay-access.org. The J22, J24, and Catalina 22 classes are also one design, meaning all the boats in those classes are identical to one another -- no handicap. The Catalina 22 one-design class has shown be very popular and continuously growing. The PHRF Spinnaker Class is a handicap class where dissimilar keel boats can race against each other. New participants are welcome at all times. You should have the basic capability of confidently controlling your boat, plus some familiarity with the yacht racing rules. If you have neither, don't let that stop you from getting involved! We gladly share our wonderful sport with newcomers. Last year, the Association implemented an “I want to Crew” flag. When someone is interested in racing on a boat, they raise a “CREW” flag located at the end of the Villa Capri pier. - Continued on Past Center Map

100th Anniversary Celebration of the Battleship Texas • Saturday, March 15 noon to 10 p.m. The Battleship Texas Foundation in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will host a public festival to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the Battleship Texas. The Texas served in both world wars and is the last remaining “dreadnought,” or big-gun battleship. The festival will feature Robert Earl Keen’s “A Texas Uprising” and will be held on the grounds of the San Jacinto Battleground Park adjacent to the ship. The Battleship Texas will be open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. for public tours. Festival patrons can also visit interactive exhibits, historical zones and children’s activity zones; enjoy headliner musical entertainment; local restaurants and gourmet food trucks; and a fireworks show to end the celebration.

Live Entertainment Lineup:

Tickets are available in advance and at the gate. General admission tickets are $14 in advance and $20 on the day of the festival. A discounted price is available for veterans: $8 in advance and $15 at the gate. VIP tents and ship access are also available.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACES • CONTINUED Last year, we started a new Non-Spinnaker B class. The Non-Spinnaker class has been one of the fastest growing classes in the event. In order to mitigate the difference of sailing experiences, we have formed a ‘B’eginner and an ‘A’dvanced Non-Spinnaker Class. The Non-Spinnaker B class will have a fixed course (same exact marks every night) and

an emphasis on people racing against each other with very similar skills. The helmsperson must be a novice, less than 5 years racing experience, with a novice crew. Experienced racing crews are allowed, but they can only give verbal commands and only physical interaction (grabbing the tiller or sheets) in case of an emergency to prevent a collision. The concept of this class is to allow crews to gain experience and confidence, while racing against other crews of similar skill level. For more specific rules, please go to our web site, www.clearlakeracing.com; under “Main Menu”>”Event Information”>”2014 Sailing Instructions”. Clear Lake Racing Association sponsors a series of Winter Seminars; February 26th “Mark Roundings & Lake Tactics”, March 5th “How to lose a sailboat race” and March 12th “Finishing the Race”. All seminars are held at the Villa Capri from 6:30 to about 8:00. These are a free set of sessions that give good information about sailing and basic sailboat racing. Over the years, these seminars are given by professionals donating their time; professional sailmaker, USYRU judges, Class Champions, America’s Cup racers, etc… There is no lack of experience or knowledge which makes these seminars well worth the time. The 2013 Class winners are: Non-Spinnaker B: Richard Dashiel, Catalina 22: Ben Miller, FJ: Watt Duffy, J-22: Casey Lambert, J-24: Stuart Lindow, J-80: Forbes Durdin, Sunfish: Tom Meeh, Non-Spinnaker A: Blair Pyne, PHRF: Chris Alk, Portsmouth: Bob Hunkins. This year, our Club Championship was sailed in non-spinnaker Flying Scot’s (round-robin style) with no pole. The final four qualifying champions were Forbes Durdin, Casey Lambert, Watt Duffy and our 2013 Club Champion: Tom Meeh and Doug Cummings. These races are possible due to the help of our race committee and sponsors. If you would like to sponsor the races, sponsor a boat, or if you have questions about the races, please contact us at www.clearlakeracing.com or 281-636-3508.

Soulfiya CD “Reality” • Continued From Page 51 “’Arraignment Day’ is special because it takes a heavy topic (being arrested) and makes it a little lighter,” said Soulfiya. “Not to mention that I may or may not have had a few too many run-ins with the law in my day. The video was great. It was shot by Grassy Rootz TV and Episode Phive, all longtime friends of mine. We shot it at like 6 a.m. in Austin after a show the night before at Austin’s legendary Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street. It was a great time other than the nasty weather and early hour.” The EP was produced by international dub reggae sensation Mcpullish who has produced tracks for many of the world's top reggae artists. The musical track for "Heavy Vibez" was done by Grammy winning reggae producer Wilburn "Squidly" Cole, son of Jamaican music legend Stranger Cole and drummer for Damian Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley. The music for both "Spiritual Pollution" and "Nah Like We" was done by Jah P, Haitian-American reggae producer and former member of the now defunct Shark Attack. Mike Healy, bass player for The Black Lung Crew, composed the music for the title track "Reality" as well as co-creating "Red Eyez." Healy also handled mush of the production and engineer work. Rounding out the EP are the sensational tunes: “Reality,” “Heavy Vibez,” “Red Eyez,” “Nah Like We” (featuring local musician Gaby Veray), “Reality dub” (Mcpullish mix), and “Red Eyez dub” (Mcpullish mix). Dub is a genre of music that consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings. It is achieved by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, and emphasizing the drum and bass parts. “Rerooted Apparel, a San Antonio-based clothing line, made this album possible,” said Soulfiya. “Their sponsorship paid for top-notch studio time and production which makes all the difference.” “Reality” is available at Soulfiya’s live shows, and on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Xbox music, cdbaby.com, and soon-to-be Pandora radio. Dru Long, also known as Soulfiya began his career in Riverside, California, while attending nearby University of the Redlands where he was on scholarship to play football. After breaking his jaw in three places in a bar fight just three months into his first semester, Long lost his scholarship and the ability to perform. As destiny would have it, Long made his way to Galveston Island making his presence known in his new home by “guesting” with Texas groups like Fiel, Shark Attack, The Dubkids, and countless others under the Soulfiya moniker. In 2006, Long gathered the best musicians he could muster to create his own band. In less than a year, the band parted ways for a myriad of reasons ranging from drug use to gunshot wounds. He felt that something had to change, and he desperately needed to clean the slate and start fresh. The catalyst of this would come in the form of Hurricane Ike. Starting over was hard, and Long returned to doing guest vocals for local acts under the name Soulfiya. He also created The Black Lung Crew. This would give him a chance to blend the two styles most influential to him reggae and hip-hop. The group has been amazingly successful in the short time they have been together. They have headlined festivals and opened for reggae's elite all across the Gulf Coast. For more information, email Long at SoulfiyaBooking@gmail.com or like Soulfiya on Facebook.

biggest musical influence.”

Hennessy remembers her Aunt Shawn Hallmon’s emotional response to the performance and said “making her proud and seeing her cry was all I needed to make me feel like I had won. At that point, I didn't need a trophy or a title. It all came down to THAT moment when I hugged her and she was crying. I'll never forget that.” Hennessy puts her strong voice and awesome crowd interaction skills to work fronting her namesake musical group, The Band Hennessy. “I joined the band officially back in 2012, when it was known as Rockit Bayou,” she said. “I remember feeling so overwhelmed with excitement.” The Band Hennessy is comprised of Christian Weigand (guitar, marketing), Chris Piper (drums), Heather Miller (vocals, placed fourth recently in the 2014 Bay Area Houston Idol), Kevin Cowart (bass), and Merlin Marchand (guitar). “We are currently in the process of getting our originals ready to record an EP this year.”Broken Before" is our first original, written by Weigand and it’s about a really intense breakup I went through about a year or so ago. It's definitely a hit, and everyone has given nothing but positive feedback as it gets stuck in their head! Our music is here to make people feel. Our originals are raw, from the core, and have a story behind every song. We hope you love it as much as we do!” Hennessy loves her family and friends as much as her music as they have supported her musical journey all along. “My father and uncle are both percussionists and my grandfather, Gonzalo Obregon, made his living and supported our family as a Mariachi singer,” she said. “There wasn't a day that went by that my grandfather didn't sing to me or play his guitar. He is probably my

Aside from her grandfather, Hennessy credits her inspiration to the support of her father, “music mom” Wendy Taylor, baby sisters, Brynn and Macey Cummings, best friend of 16 years, Elizabeth Lovelace, and best friend/band mate Heather Miller. Growing up, Hennessy was shy and timid, but being in the school choir gave her confidence to sing in a group setting. It wasn't until the end of her junior year at Dobie High School that she gained confidence to solo. “I've been very blessed with amazing choir directors who had nothing but the utmost faith in me. They pushed me to better myself, take vocal lessons, and really grasp the fact that I had a talent I needed to share. Ms. Wendy Sharpless, Mr. Rob Phillips, and Mr. Derek Bready deserve credit for having faith in me to pursue music as a career.” Hennessy remembers her first solo performance like it was yesterday. “I was in 8th grade at my school’s Pop Show and I sang "God Fearin' Women Get The Blues" by Martina McBride. Talk about a mouthful! I was sweating, nervous, and a little awkward!” But now, adrenaline overtakes any nerves she may have before taking the stage and performance mode kicks in. “There is nothing more natural and raw than expressing myself through music. I love entertaining people, bringing a smile to someone's face, or a tear to their eye. Music is universal and is the most powerful form of communication between people. I can become emotionally exhausted after leaving my heart on the stage. I feel like I can achieve anything up there. It's raw, it's intense, and it's HOME to me.” Currently, Hennessy is a Sales Professional at Texas Auto Online and feels fortunate to have managers and teammates that support her dreams. “Phillip Sommer, one of the three owners, was there for the Bay Area Houston Idol finale, and he looked like a proud dad. The moment he walked up to me, he lit up like a Christmas tree and told me "Good Luck! You've got this!” The engaging performer is self-less when crediting others and strives to live passionately. “Smile at everyone you see. Remember life is too short to be unhappy. Love HARD and without hesitation, even when it hurts because the people who have the biggest hearts have felt the most pain.” 2014 will be a banner year for Hennessy. She hopes to “continue successfully selling tons of cars and chasing musical dreams.” Like The Band Hennessy on Facebook, and go see them perform live around the Bay Area at these venues: Zone 504, Dempsey's, Cockeyed Seagull, or Jackie's Brickhouse.

Ashley Hennessy wins Bay Area Houston Idol 2014 By Rhonda Meredith Ashley Hennessy received a wall post on Facebook from friend Kim Anderson-Rose about the 2014 Bay Area Idol competition and decided to give it another shot. “I took home third place in last year’s competition,” the 26 year-old Pasadena area native said. “It was an amazing learning experience. I met so many genuine and kindhearted people who are now Pictured (l to r) are Bay Area Houston Idol winners Morena the core of my fan base. It was the best decision as a vo- Roas, Ashley Hennessy and James A. Williams, Jr. calist that I have ever made.”

The experience was even better this time around. “I was competing against SO many amazing singers and performers. Believe it or not, they pushed me to be better, to take things up a notch, and have FUN while being up on stage. I was even up against my best friend and fellow band mate, Heather Miller.” Last month in front of a large crowd at Jackie’s Brickhouse, it all came together and Hennessy won first place. She brought the house down with her rendition of Beyonce’s song “If I Were A Boy” at the finale. - Continued on Page 45

SEEN BY THE SCENE: BAY AREA HOUSTON IDOL 2014 In February, Bay Area Houston Idol crowned their 2014 winners to a standing-room-only packed crowd at Jackie’s Brickhouse. The winners are Ashley Hennessy (first place), James. A. Williams, Jr. (second place) and Morena Roas (third place). During the five-week competition, 90 contestants initially competed before three celebrity judges weekly for 30 spots in the semi-finals. Then, 10 highly talented performers ultimately advanced to the finals where they were asked to present two vocals not previously sung. The 10 talented finalists were judged on voice, pitch, presence and entertainment factor. They all did an amazing job, and choosing the winners was most difficult. The judges for the finals were Kelly Williams, vocalist and executive producer for the Miss Kemah Pageant; Justin Van Sant, singer/songwriter who was named Best Country Act of 2012 and 2013 by The Houston Press; and Dave Morales, co-owner and writer for BackstageOL.com, on-air personality at 104.1 KRBE, and featured entertainment contributor on Fox 26. The presenting sponsor for Bay Area Houston Idol 2014 was YourTownTV.com and host sponsor, Jackie’s Brickhouse. Other sponsors included Norman Frede Chevrolet, Marathon Petroleum, The Paint Pub, The SCENE Magazine, Minuteman Press, North Galveston County Chamber of Commerce and Tunes of Texas.

Winners Crowned of MIDNITE SLICE’s Battle of the Bands nally booked the show we had no idea what to expect. I presented it to the guys and they were like, ‘at a pizza shop?’ Little did we know it would turn out to be a very memorable experience for all of us. The place was crawling with talent and fans alike. The pizza was great, and filling our pockets with a fat stack of cash was definitely a plus. We love Midnite Slice, and would definitely play more shows there.”

By Rae Drady And the winner is, (drum roll please)… Soul In Tension! After 4 weekends of stiff competition throughout the month of February, the final round of Midnite Slice’s second annual Battle of the Bands was held on March 1, and the judges chose Soul In Tension (who have been featured by the SCENE previously) as the top act that participated. Blackgrass Gospel took second place, and solo acoustic artist Bruce Courtney came in third.

The judges were all local musicians as well, and Jordan Tydings of the band Threadbelly said of the top three bands, “Soul In Tension was really high energy. Blackgrass Gospel definitely falls into a Thrash Grass genre, but has almost a Scottish or Irish feel, like your singing in a pub surrounded by people screaming. Bruce Courtney is an incredible guitarist, singer, and song writer.”

As the first place winners, Soul In Tension received the $500 cash prize and will get to play a show at Cabo Clear Lake. Sibbian Rowe, owner of Midnite Slice, said of the winning bands, “Soul In Tension was such a show. The lead singer is so energetic he demands the crowd’s attention and is very entertaining. Blackgrass Gospel is just Fun. The songs are funny, and make you wanna tap your foot and sing along. I think Bruce Courtney is underrated as an acoustic act. He had the most amazing baritone voice.” She said she was extremely glad so many talented local musicians participated and that the event was a success. Soul In Tension could not have been happier about the judges’ decision. Band member Mike Carroll said, “When I origi-

Tydings added, “I thought it was a huge, huge honor to be asked to judge. It was hard to judge. The bands are all really awesome. This event attracts a wide variety of genres and styles, so with many musical flavors represented it was hard to know who was better.” He also mentioned that he sees this event as more than just a “battle.” He enjoyed getting to watch the performers network and make friends, just like last year, and looks forward to working with many of the bands on shows in the future and continuing to watch them grow. He specifically mentioned that he thought, Cymblem, who participated both last year and this year, were good last year, but even better this time around. - Continued on Page 45

Soulfiya CD “Reality” Is The Real Deal By Rhonda Meredith Soulfiya’s EP “Reality” dropped March 3 and has been steadily climbing iTunes reggae chart. The veteran heavy weight based out of Galveston blends American Reggae, Dancehall and Hip-Hop to create meaningful songs and a raucous, high-energy show that keeps the crowds hyped. Soulfiya’s rapid-fire lyricism is complemented by the thunderous “riddims” from his backing band The Black Lung Crew. “Reality” showcases eight powerful songs. “’Reality’ is a departure from today's over-prevalent "fratreggae" party album,” said Dru Long, also known musically as Soulfiya. “It deals with geo-politics, police brutality, neocolonialism, and the overall false nature of many of today’s popular musicians.” The first single, “Spiritual Pollution” features Bigga Haitian. Bigga is a pioneer of conscious dancehall reggae and is one of the first non-Jamaican artists to make waves in the genre. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he is credited as musical inspiration from multiple-Grammy winner and fellow Haitian Wyclef Jean. “Bigga has been a heavy influence on my career. The message really sets the tone for the EP and it's catchy and very unique.” “Arraignment Day” is the latest single and the first music video from “Reality.”

delon and freeing up the Wilson brothers into the dual lead vocal formation. Having seen this new lineup twice now, I can confirm confidently that the energy of the band not just by the factor but the power of two, which for all you mathsavvy followers out there, means a doozy full. The breaks between songs are quicker now, the stage dynamics are twirled well past the stops in energy level, and the overall show refreshingly invigorating. Not all bands are equipped to pull off such a step up but The Hunger sure did. Very well done!

This is a worthy cause and hopefully Scout Bar continues the trend down the road. Live music performances for this worthwhile cause were provided by The Hunger, Six Gun Sound, Slight Chance, Adamantium, Concepts & Black 13. Emcee for the event was A.D. The Hunger @ Scout Bar

Loose Notes by Andy Eng

This year, the Ground Hogs called it right in a big way, the Houston Live Stock & Rodeo was booked right on top of Mardi Gras, and word is that the crawfish harvest is running a bit behind -- All good reason to fret if you're the worrying type, but if you're a fan of live music, you know there's plenty of good stuff to go around, and with that, we aim our sights into March Madness, spring break, but first before we do, let's run down a bit of all that went down on the live music SCENE in February... EPICUREAN EVENING - This is one of my favorite annual events and this year, aside from the outrageous good food, one of my favorite groups is the Mamacita's

full mariachi band. Always festive and perfectly sized for the crowds at the cavernous Space Center Houston. This lively group is an event standard. Interestingly this evening on the live music front, the good folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse teamed up with The School of Rock. At first you would think this as a dubious combination. However, knowing the folks at Jackie’s are never afraid to try something new *and* with their uncanny success rate doing the things differently, it made perfect sense to unleash the area’s future rock and rollers (with full amplification) in the sophisticated settings of Space Center Houston at a Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce event – And have it work! Crazy brilliant! Not sure when we’ll see such a pairing again, but suffice to say, keep an eye on Jackie,s Brickhouse and be a part. You know it'll be a great time! The Hunger @ Scout Bar

PEACE, LOVE, ROCK & ROLL - Was the mantra chant Jeff Wilson of the Hunger declared as Houston Rock TV presented Rockers against Domestic Violence, a benefit show for the Bay Area Turning Point Center for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

EVETT at CAPS & CORKS 1-2-3-4. Evett has four years of bartending experience and has been at Caps & Corks for 6 months.

By Rhonda Meredith

Confessions of a Shop-a-holic. She enjoys preparing Caps & Corks signature drink: the Shop-a-holic. The beverage consists of clear liquors, Blue Curacao, and sweet and sour. I say “Spring Break” and she saysSnow skiing. (What?) “Well that’s what we did back in L.A.,” the friendly bartender said. Leaving Los Angeles. Yep. Evett is originally from California and moved to Texas to attend Houston Baptist University on a double volleyball/softball scholarship. The athletic bartender IS that good. She made the U.S. Olympic Softball team, but rather than achieving a gold medal, she received something better – News she was going to be a mom! Deep in the heart of Texas… “I love Houston’s diversity,” Evett says. “And the Southern way that family is important.” Green blood and red roots. So while Evett came to Texas by way of California, her heritage is colored green from her Irish descent. She has lovely redlocks flowing from under a cowboy hat during our interview. When asked if she wears green on St. Patrick’s Day she said, “Absolutely!”

What do country music and R&B have in common? They are Evett’s favorite musical genres. She would rather listen to music than watch a movie or TV. Her favorite songs right now are Rascal Flatts “Rewind” and Estelle’s “Thank You.”

A few of her favorite things... Water, the beach, horses, and horse rides on the beach. Evett loves her children, children in general, traveling, education, and animals. As far as movies go, it’s “The Butler” and “Catching Fire.” Butterflies: She says they are like her “beautiful and free” spirit.

Faith. Family. Friends. Evett is a renaissancetype of woman and lives by this creed. It’s called “F to the 3rd power.” By day, she is an oil and gas broker working investment deals, and by evening, this bartender uses her easy smile and happy personality to bring a little bit more beauty into the world.

Dempsey’s Irish Grill Celebrates Irish Pub Culture By Rhonda Meredith Dempsey’s Irish Grill, located at 20801 Gulf Freeway at NASA Road One in the Blast Fitness Shopping Center, captures the merry-making character of the Irish and their celebrated pub culture with good music, hearty food, and cool drink specials. Since 2010, Dempsey’s has been supporting local music. Live entertainment takes center stage on Friday and Saturday nights in March with rock solid acts like Pirate Radio, SNAFU, David Grace, 3 Peace, and acoustic performances with the Territo brothers (of Six Gun Sound) and Justin Tucker. The Playboys perform every Sunday night and Radio Minor every Thursday night. Check www.DempseysPubTX.com for band updates.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY @ DEMPSEY’S: Cold green beer is only $2 and the hot Guinness beef stew is complimentary. Dunk the leprechaun (in the dunk tank filled with green beer) and win a free shot! Enjoy $5 Car Bombs, $4.50 Buschmills or Jameson, and $5 per pound crawfish. Musical entertainment is provided by David Grace. There will be St. Patrick’s Day giveaways all day, but the specials are only while they last.

Dempsey’s features all of the Rockets and Astros games on multiple flat screen TVs, as well as the Saturday, March 8, Canelo versus Angulo boxing match. The individual daily specials and week-day happy hour deals keep the Irish eyes smiling. Mondays through Fridays, Dempsey’s honors the happy hour tradition and takes $1 off regularly priced drinks from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday nights are all-you-can-eat crawfish from 6 to 9 p.m. At 9 p.m., the drink specials begin and “Open Mic Night” hosted by Raf Rivera from "The Hunger" and professional musician Andrew Casas starts. Get a complimentary draft beer when you sign up and play. Guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, vocals, etc. are all welcomed. So if you can play an instrument and or sing, get down to Dempsey's and show everyone what you've got! Dempsey’s offers $2 “u-call-it” liquor on Tuesday nights to Irish and non-Irish alike from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Hump day has never tasted so good. Dempsey’s cooks up all-you-can-eat barbeque ribs and potato salad on Wednesday nights for $11.99 from 6 to 9 p.m. Pair this tasty plate with $2.50 domestic bottles and $4 bombs all night and partake in karaoke featuring Mama Cass.

Editors Note: Replacing last year’s “Toss The Leprechaun” attraction will be the opportunity to “Dunk The Leprechaun.” Only at Dempsey’s on St. Patrick’s Day.

It's live music on Thursday so that means Radio Minor with Raf Rivera from "The Hunger" performs. Dinner specials include a $7 rib eye (10-ounce) and fries or a $4 chicken salad. Enjoy $2 margaritas and house wine and $5 Dempsey’s (20-ounce) Texas Tea. Dempsey’s also hosts a friendly dart competition and will match the pot. The blind scramble has a $10 entry fee. Saturdays at Dempsey’s are hot no matter what the temperature is outside. Fire up with $3 fireballs and $2 big ass beers! It may be the various events and daily specials at Dempsey’s or it may be their philosophy that makes the venue so popular: “A good Irish American establishment makes everyone comfortable,” said owner John Delesandri. “There are no strangers at Dempsey’s, only friends you haven't met yet.”
