Movies to Watch on New Year’s Eve

“The Apartment” (1960): Encompassing a holiday season, director Billy Wilder’s great, Oscar-winning comedydrama culminates on New Year’s Eve … after upwardly mobile office drone C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) has lent his shoulder to his crush, lovelorn elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), to cry on. Without spilling too many beans, it can be said anyone who stays with the film will find its finale irresistible.

If you want to dial back to the start of the current millennium, this classy heist tale offers recent nostalgia along with a terrific acting duo in Sean Connery and Catherine ZetaJones. She plays an insurance investigator out to catch the veteran thief he portrays, resulting in a literal high-wire act for them between Kuala Lumpur skyscrapers on New Year’s Eve.

“New Year’s Eve” (2011): It didn’t meet box-office hopes – perhaps because it was released a couple of weeks before Christmas, rather than closer to the title holiday – but for an actual Dec. 31 viewing, enjoyment still is provided by director Garry Marshall and an all-star cast ranging from Robert De Niro and Hilary Swank to Lea Michele (“Glee”) and Jon Bon Jovi.
