Whether your visit is temporary or long-term, we hope you will enjoy all that our installation and the local area have to offer. Fort Lee is situated alongside the Tri-Cities of Virginia – Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Hopewell – as well as the counties of Chesterfield, Prince George and Dinwiddie. The Army garrison shares many similarities with its neighbors. It is a diverse community comprised of service members and civilian personnel, as well as a home to hundreds of military families who reside in its housing areas. Over the past 14 years, Fort Lee experienced enormous growth, mostly as a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decisions and the installation’s designation as the Army Sustainment Center of Excellence – a focused training base for military supply, subsistence, maintenance, munitions, transportation and more. Those decisions sparked a massive base modernization mission with a budget of more than $1.2 billion. In addition to new training facilities, administrative areas, troop dining halls and barracks, Fort Lee has grown and improved its many support facilities and services for military families. Fort Lee has witnessed significant changes to its population as well – much of it due to the convergence of military organizations from other parts of the nation. In addition to the Combined Arms Support Command, Team Lee now consists of the Army Logistics University, the U.S. Army Ordnance School, the U.S. Army Quartermaster School and the U.S. Army Transportation School. Its tenants include the headquarters of the Defense Commissary Agency, Kenner Army Health Clinic, a Military Entrance Processing Station, the Defense Contract Management Agency and the 2nd Brigade of the 94th Training Division (Army Reserve). Fort Lee supports more than 28,500 people on post and nearly 63,000 off post, including personnel from all branches of the military service, their families, government civilians and contractors, military retirees and reservists. Furthermore, as many as 70,000 troops will pass through Fort Lee’s classrooms each year, making it the third largest training site in the Army. These are the most significant statistics of all … Fort Lee recognizes its tremendous responsibility and the privilege to provide the most comprehensive training and quality of life services possible for the members of the military family who will pass through its gates.

Building 5228 Phone: (804) 734-5053/5056/5058 Hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays Fort Lee conducts ID checks for all adults (age 18 and older) entering the post. Those visiting for the first time who do not have a federal ID card must go to the Visitor Control Center with a valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license) to receive an initial background check. Once entered in the system, individuals can access post through any open gate with a Common Access Card, Military or Dependent ID, or a federal government-issued PIV. Visitors will be in-lane vetted when the VCC is closed. Visitors failing security checks will be denied access and directed to the VCC during normal operating hours. First-time visitors may expedite the initial screening process by submitting a pre-approval request – DES FORM 190-3 (individual) or DES FORM 190-2 (group). Pre-approval is encouraged for individuals outside of the state/ local area. Pre-approval requests will be processed within three business days (holidays and weekends excluded). TRANSPORTATION
TAXI SERVICE Commercial passenger vehicles (taxis and ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft) are prohibited entry to post unless they are: dropping off passengers currently authorized entry (e.g., reporting service members, essential personnel, residents); picking up passengers in family housing areas who directly arranged the service; delivering food to family housing areas (via services such as Uber Eats and DoorDash). AIT Soldiers are prohibited from using these commercial transportation services.
BUS SERVICE Regional bus service is provided by Greyhound at the terminal in Petersburg (100 W. Washington St.). Call toll free at (800) 872-7245 or local at (804) 732-2905. The Petersburg Area Transit operates on Fort Lee, providing services to and from the installation to Petersburg with connections to the surrounding communities. Pick-up location is outside the PXtra on Mahone Avenue.
RAIL SERVICE Regional and national rail service is provided by AMTRAK. The station is at 3516 South St., Petersburg. Ticket office hours are 7:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily. For more information, visit www.amtrak.com.

MOTORCYCLE REQUIREMENTS
The Fort Lee Shuttle is available Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., for official business travel on Fort Lee. Call the dispatcher at (804) 765-8294 to provide the pickup location and the shuttle will arrive within 15 minutes.
All personnel operating a motorcycle, moped or scooter on the installation will wear a properly fastened Department of Transportation or SNELL Foundation-approved motorcycle helmet with face shield or goggles. Other requirements include full-fingered gloves, long pants, long-sleeved

shirt and sturdy over-the-ankle shoes. The policy is available at home.army.mil/lee/index.php/about/policies-andregulations. Motorcycle safety classes are offered free of charge to active-duty military personnel. For class registration, visit https://imc.army.mil/airs (CAC required) or call 804765-3127.
SPEED LIMITS The speed limit in Fort Lee housing areas is 15 mph. All other roads are 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Speed limits are enforced using radar, especially in the housing areas. Individuals cited for a moving violation will receive a U.S. Violation Notice, requiring either the payment of fine or appearance in Magistrate Court. Additionally, Fort Lee police have the option of issuing an Armed Forces Traffic Ticket. On-post driving privileges can be suspended or revoked if multiple violations are issued to a single driver during a given time. Use of handheld devices is prohibited while operating a vehicle on Fort Lee. This ban includes text messaging. Hands-free devices for cellphones are authorized. Virginia also prohibits texting and driving and some municipalities have set rules for hands-free devices only. Violations are a primary offense, and drivers may be subjected to fines.
RUNNING ROUTE RESTRICTIONS Fort Lee has established official physical training routes from 5 to 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. During this time, traffic is prohibited on Shop Road from 11th to 19th Streets and on B Avenue from Sisisky Boulevard to 38th Street. Traffic also is prohibited on the Ordnance Campus Bridge from 5-7 a.m. Prohibited routes are marked with intersection signage during physical training hours. Violators will be cited by the Fort Lee Police. The policy is available at home.army. mil/lee/index.php/about/policies-and-regulations.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY The pedestrian right-of-way law is not a guarantee that a vehicle will stop. Furthermore, drivers may have difficulty seeing joggers and walkers in the early morning and late afternoon, or during adverse weather conditions. To increase visibility between dusk and dawn, all persons are required to wear reflective clothing or a reflective belt. If sidewalks are unavailable, pedestrians should face traffic while traveling on roadway shoulders and use designated crosswalks. The use of headphones and earbuds while walking, jogging, skating or bicycling on or adjacent to roadways on Army installations is prohibited. While using Fort Lee’s tracks, reflective clothing is not required and headphones are permitted.

Purpose-driven Retirement Needs a Financial Strategy Today’s retirees, and those of tomorrow, have had a sense of purpose their entire lives – and they don’t intend to give it up just because they’ll no longer be working full time. In fact, 55% of recent retirees said retirement is the time for “a new chapter in life,” compared with just 22% who said it was “a time for rest and relaxation,” according to the 2020 Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. And the same study found that 95% of retirees said it was important to keep learning and growing at every age. But however they find their purpose – contributing to the community, growing intellectually, gaining new experiences and so on – retirees will need to be financially prepared. How can you prepare for a purposeful retirement? You may want to start by asking yourself these questions: • Will I need to prioritize some of my goals? As a retiree, you may hope to do any number of things. You might want to learn new skills through hands-on training at a local vocational school or crafts organization. You might want to take up a hobby such as collecting rare wines. You may even want to fix up old houses. And you also might want to expand your view of the world by traveling extensively. If, like almost everyone else, you won’t have unlimited financial resources during your retirement years, you may need to prioritize these goals, worthy as they may all be to your sense of purpose. • Can I still afford to retire at the age I planned? When you first calculated your ideal retirement age, you might have been counting on your investment portfolio having returned a certain percentage. Or you might have had different goals in mind than you do now. Or you might have had a somewhat different family situation. Changes in any or all of these factors could affect the age at which you choose to retire. But if you conclude that you may need to postpone retirement for a couple of years, your decision could offer some advantages, such as the ability to contribute more to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. In any case, it’s a good idea to review your retirement plans periodically, perhaps at least once a year. • How can I incorporate philanthropy into my financial strategy? Giving back to your community may be a key element of your purpose-driven retirement. Yet, with so many educational, civic and cultural groups in existence – including many in your own area – you probably can’t give as much as you’d like to all of them without affecting your own lifestyle today and the legacy you’d like to leave for your family. So, you may want to take two distinct steps. First, consider establishing a budget for how much you will give to charitable groups each year. And, second, think about including philanthropy in your estate plans. Because there are many vehicles and techniques available, you should consult with your legal, tax and financial professionals when drawing up your estate-planning strategies. It can be extremely rewarding to live your retirement purposefully – but you’ll find it a lot easier to do when you make the right financial moves. SETTLING IN MILITARY IN-PROCESSING https://home.army.mil/lee/index.php?cID=513 During normal weekday duty hours, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., all permanent party Soldiers should first report to their unit for in-processing instructions; do not report to the Soldier Support Center. The unit S-1 will complete arrival documentation and email necessary paperwork to the Personnel Services Branch and Defense Military Pay Office. Other services, Army recruiters and Military Entrance Processing Station cadre should contact their gaining units for specific instructions. AN OVERVIEW OF THE TRI-CITIES REGION: The region is marked by the Appomattox River and the confluence of the Appomattox and James rivers. American Indians from the Appomattox and Powhatan tribes called this area home for centuries. Shortly after the settlement of Jamestown in 1607, colonists ventured down the Appomattox and James rivers to build new settlements along the banks. These included the Citie of Henricus in what is now Chesterfield County, and Fort Henry, which developed into the modern-day city of Petersburg. Major fur and Indian trade routes were established along local waterways, and it wasn’t long before the area became a center for tobacco farming and manufacturing, supplying Virginia’s cash crop to the entire globe.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY The county was founded on May 25, 1749. It was carved from Henrico County. The county was named from the Fourth Earl of Stanhope, England’s famed Lord Chesterfield. The James River borders the county on the northeast and the Appomattox River forms the county’s southern boundary. Chesterfield was first settled in 1611 at the Citie of Henricus, when residents of Jamestown moved upstream to a “convenient, strong, healthie and sweete seate” for a new town after conditions at Jamestown were too harsh. Chesterfield County was the site of the first cultivated tobacco in America at Bermuda Hundred, which also became the first incorporated town in America. In 1619, Falling Creek became the site of the first iron furnace in the New World.
BATTERY DANTZLER Battery Dantzler was constructed at the northern end of the Howlett Line in May 1864 to stop Union naval forces from advancing up the James River to Richmond. Confederate forces engaged in several artillery duels with Union ironclads. DREWRY’S BLUFF Constructed in 1862, Fort Drewry on Drewry’s Bluff stood as a vital bastion blocking the progress of the U. S. Navy up the James River toward the Confederate capital of Richmond. A decisive battle on May 15, 1862, ended the Union naval threat to the capital city when defenders defeated the famous ironclad USS Monitor and four other warships. Today the fort survives intact, with a one mile walking trail and numerous exhibits. A viewing platform offers a sweeping vista of the James River and the battlefield. Located in the 800-acre Dutch Gap Conservation Area, this park is a reconstruction of the 1611 Citie of Henricus, the second successful English settlement in the New World. Henricus was established in 1611 at a site Sir Thomas Dale found on a bluff overlooking one of the most scenic areas of the James River in what is today Chesterfield County. Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan, spent much of her life near Henricus. It was here that tobacco crops were first grown and cultivated for sale in Europe. Costumed interpreters in this 32-acre living history museum transport you back to the days of Pocahontas and the early English settlers. A re-created Arrohateck Indian village demonstrates how native people lived. EPPINGTON PLANTATION Eppington Plantation, built around 1770, was the home of Francis Eppes VI, who married the half-sister of Thomas Jefferson’s wife, Martha. LOCAL AREA COLONIAL HEIGHTS The earliest people to inhabit the area were members of the Algonquin Indian tribe, who apparently roamed along the Appomattox River. Several areas in present-day Colonial Heights still retain their Indian names. The area was settled by the English in 1620. The name Colonial Heights results from action during the American Revolutionary War. In 1781, the French troops under the Marquis de Lafayette, known as the Colonials, retreated north from Petersburg and set up artillery on the heights overlooking Petersburg and the Appomattox River. The area came to be known as Colonial Heights. The area also became involved in operations during the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee made his headquarters at Violet Bank from June through September during the siege of Petersburg in 1864. The area was first incorporated in 1926 and became an independent city in 1948.
FORT CLIFTON Fort Clifton, positioned on a high bluff at the confluence of the Appomattox River and Swift Creek in Colonial Heights, was a
Confederate stronghold during the Siege of Petersburg. The fort controlled navigation on the river north of Petersburg. Today it offers walking trails and a wildlife observation deck. Free admission. VIOLET BANK MUSEUM This unique Federal-style home in Colonial Heights was originally built in 1777 but was destroyed by fire in 1805. Rebuilt in 1810, it served as headquarters for General Robert E. LOCAL AREA DINWIDDIE COUNTY Dinwiddie County was established on May 1, 1752 from Prince George County. The county is named for Robert Dinwiddie, lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1751-1758. The county was the site of several key battles during the Civil War during the Siege of Petersburg. The Battle of Lewis’ Farm, fought along Quaker Road, on March 29, 1865, was the first in a series of attempts by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s army to cut Gen. Robert E. Lee’s final supply line. On April 1, 1865, the Union army was able to cut the rail line after capturing Five Forks at the Battle of Five Forks. The following morning, Grant’s army was able to break through Confederate fortifications in the county. The assault broke Lee’s defensive line around Petersburg and compelled Lee to order the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond that night.
FIVE FORKS BATTLEFIELD By the spring of 1865, the last remaining supply line into Petersburg was the South Side Railroad. On April 1, 22,000 Union troops under Major General Philip H. Sheridan attacked and defeated 10,000 Confederate troops led by Major General George E. Pickett at Five Forks, an important road junction that protected the railroad. The next day Grant assaulted Petersburg, which along with Richmond was evacuated that night. GENERAL GRANT’S HEADQUARTERS AT CITY POINT & APPOMATTOX PLANTATION While laying siege to Petersburg, Grant established his headquarters at City Point, a small port town at the confluence of the James and Appomattox rivers, that is now Hopewell. Petersburg was incorporated as a city in 1850. By then the city had become a thriving industrial and commercial center with tobacco warehouses, cotton and flour mills and iron foundries. The city’s railroad connections and its ability to provide supplies to the Confederate capital of Richmond made it a key target for Union armies under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant toward the end of the Civil War. For nearly 10 months in 1864 and 1865, Petersburg was under siege by the Union army and was defended by Gen. Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia.

Weston Plantation is a three-story, 18th-century Georgian mansion overlooking the Appomattox River in Hopewell. William and Christian Eppes Gilliam built this home in 1789. PETERSBURG The city began as a frontier fort and trading post in 1645 called Fort Henry. The Battle of Petersburg on April 25, 1781, featured about 1,000 southside militia under Gen. Baron von Steuben resisting more than 2,500 British regulars. British Gen. Cornwallis gathered British troops for the Yorktown campaign in Petersburg.

WESTON PLANTATION
Built in 1735 for colonial parishioners, this church was restored in the early 1900s as a memorial to Confederate soldiers. It is one of the few churches for which decorative stained-glass windows were completely executed under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The 15 stained-glass windows commemorate each of the 13 Confederate states, an additional window is of a cross and the other honors the group behind the effort, the Ladies Memorial Association of Petersburg. CENTRE HILL MUSEUM Built in 1823 by Robert Bolling IV, Centre Hill remained an opulent Petersburg residence until 1936. The home’s interior features outstanding examples of Greek Revival, Federal and Colonial Revival architecture. Guided tours share the mansion’s history, including its role during the Civil War and visits by Presidents Abraham Lincoln and William Howard Taft. EASTERN FRONT VISITOR CENTER The Eastern Front Visitor Center features exhibits and audiovisual programs that introduce the story of the siege and its impact on the course of the Civil War. FARMERS BANK The Petersburg Visitors Center is housed in the 1817 Farmers Bank, one of the oldest surviving bank buildings in the nation. 52

PETER JONES TRADING STATION The ruins of one of Petersburg’s first buildings are at the intersection of Market and West Old streets in Old Towne. It is believed that a portion of the station dates back to the 17th century. PETERSBURG COURTHOUSE The Petersburg Courthouse, built between 1837 and 1839, was the official Confederate headquarters during the Siege of Petersburg and continues to be used by the Circuit Court today. During the Siege, soldiers from both sides could see the courthouse clock from the trenches and they set their timepieces by it. LOCAL AREA WESTERN FRONT DRIVING TOUR This driving tour explores where the fighting took place for the Petersburg and Weldon Railroad and the Union Army’s attempts to sever the South Side rail line. Poplar Grove National Cemetery, in Dinwiddie County, is the final resting place for over 6,000 Federal soldiers who fell in battles from Petersburg to Lynchburg, and is a highlight of the tour. PRINCE GEORGE The county was established in 1702 and was named in honor of Prince George of Denmark, who was the husband of England’s reigning monarch, Queen Anne. The county was one of the earliest settled regions of Virginia. It was first visited by the English in May of 1607, when Capt. Christopher Newport led a crew of 21 men in search of the best location for their permanent settlement. Prince George County is home of the oldest Episcopalian church still standing and still being used as a house of worship in America.
