Leander Paes: still doubling up When the U.S. Open begins Monday, Aug. 25, on ESPN and ESPN2, most of the attention will be focused on people such as Serena Williams, who is returning from an illness. Or, tennis fans will anticipate yet another Grand Slam matchup between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. When it comes to doubles, however, Leander Paes is in a category of his own. There isn’t a player in tennis who wouldn’t like to have Paes as a partner as he excels at team play. Paes, who hails from India, and partner Radek Stepanek lost in the semifinals in men’s doubles at Wimbledon this year. In mixed doubles, he and Timea Babos also came up short. The significance here is that Paes has yet to get a Grand Slam victory in 2014. Paes and partners bowed out in the quarterfinals in both events at the Australian Open. No one, however is counting out the 41-year-old and his partner at the U.S. Open, as they are the reigning champs. Paes’ age does come into question as he has now been a pro tennis player for 23 years. In that time, he’s amassed not only 14 Grand Slam victories – including a men’s double/mixed doubles double at Wimbledon in 1998 – he’s also represented his country exceptionally well at the Davis Cup and even the Olympics. A victory on the hard-court surface in New York would quell any concerns Paes may already be eyeing an acting career. Paes had a minor role in the 2013 thriller “Rajdhani Express,” resulting in rumors about his future. In the coming weeks, however, fans will be seeing Paes put on a show of a different kind when there are four players on the tennis court. FULL NAME: Leander Adrian Paes

Meyers makes merry at Emmys In Focus

With six months as an NBC late-night host now behind him, Seth Meyers is ready for primetime. The "Saturday Night Live" alum is stepping out from his "Late Night With Seth Meyers" duties to guide the television industry's top event. The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will have an NBC broadcast Monday, Aug. 25, from Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. “I feel, certainly, the most ready I’ve ever felt,” Meyers maintains of his Emmys role, “but I think I’d feel more ready a year from now as well. It’s great to be able to do a monologue every night. That has been so helpful for approaching something like this. “I’m happy I hosted the ESPYs a couple of times,” notes Meyers. “I’m happy I did the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. My skill set is always going to be in the monologue and telling the jokes, and the understanding of how much work you have to put into getting a really good monologue to open a show like this.” Top nominees likely to factor into Meyers’ remarks include HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (the leader, with 19 nominations), FX’s “Fargo” (18) and “American Horror Story: Coven” (17), AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and the HBO movie “The Normal Heart” (16 each), and Meyers’ former home, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (14). The streaming service Netflix remains a relatively new, very big factor in the Emmys, with 13 nominations for “House of Cards” and 12 for “Orange Is the New Black.” Still, Meyers reasons, “No matter how much TV changes, our job is still just to be entertaining for the three hours. I think people come to award shows (because) they like the idea of award shows. It’s the same thing about taking over a late-night show. I think you have to give the best version of yourself, figure out the kind of show we’re going to build for my skill set, and just try to be entertaining in a really old-school way.” The 2013 Emmy telecast was heavier than usual on the "In Memoriam" side. Executive-produced again by variety-show veteran Don Mischer, this year's program will have remembrance - surely encompassing Robin Williams and James Garner's recent passings - but more in line with the self-contained segment of earlier years. “We want to approach it the way we would approach anything,” Meyers says of the latest Emmy show, “which is to just be upbeat and have fun. I don’t think we’re guided by last year’s as much as the way we would approach anything like this. And certainly, we don’t want it to feel morbid. We want it to feel like a celebration of this year in TV.”

‘AMERICAN GRILLED’

knows when to turn up the heat Grilling is like driving – everyone thinks he’s great at it. But just as some people smoothly ease into a parallel space with an inch between the bumpers of the cars in front and in back, some cooks take grilling to an art. This is evidenced on Travel Channel’s “American Grilled.” The episode Wednesday, Aug. 27, is in Austin, Texas, where, as always contestants work with local foods and host and judge David Guas presides. Among the challenges in Wednesday’s episode are chefs cooking beef heart, cactus and cowboy bread, which is essentially a type of biscuit. Talking from Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery, his restaurant in Arlington, Va., Guas enthusiastically chats about his menus, the shows, cooking and, especially, grilling. For those who have never grilled, Guas says, “Start tomorrow. Get out there. I don’t know what they are waiting for. There are so many entry levels. It is more of a lifestyle than anything. I don’t want to cheapen it by saying it is just another way to cook. “I started by watching my dad grilling,” he continues. “We all have a little pyro in us. There is something very mesmerizing about that.” He recommends buying a grill to fit your space, whether a tiny balcony in a high-rise apartment or a huge grill in a large backyard. Q: What is always in your refrigerator? A: “A jar of Duke’s mayonnaise, a southern brand. Duke’s is top notch. Zatarain’s Creole Mustard, I collect mustard. I probably have seven different mustards. I’ve got to have creole and Dijon, and an array of hot sauces, Louisiana-style Texas Pete or Crystal Hot Sauce, and I have like 15 others. Crystal’s is my most versatile. Always in my refrigerator always, is a good block of New York sharp cheddar, some chicken stock or some form of stock. Onions, bell pepper and celery.”

Q: What did you have for dinner last night? A: “Chicken kabobs on the grill, grilled by yours truly, a quinoa salad with Brussels sprouts and Craisins, toasted almonds. I had seared salmon, grilled baguette. It was a smorgasbord. Last night we had seven or eight people over to watch the show at the house. And, Maryland tomato salad with crumbled feta.” Q: What are you cooking lately? A: “Seasonally I look forward to so much in this region. Green peanuts are in, fresh peanuts right out of the ground. When they are green, they are crunchy and chewy. If you are going to boil peanuts, take them from the green stage.”

Dorothy does indeed go back to Oz to help her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion (voices of Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer and James Belushi) conquer a villain known as the Jester (voice of Martin Short). Bernadette Peters, Hugh Dancy and Oliver Platt also are heard ... and if this doesn’t reach the same level of magic as the best-known “Oz” movie, it’s still enjoyable allfamily entertainment. For anyone familiar with the hit AMC horror series, it should come as no surprise that big changes are in the offing for characters including Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in this round. Having renounced his role as the leader of the survivors in a zombie-ridden world, he finds himself having to step up again when a lethal virus strikes. In a struggle for control at the prison encampment, he’s pitted very physically against the sinister Governor (David Morrissey). Continuing stars also include Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan and Scott Wilson; Michael Cudlitz and Lawrence Gillard, Jr. are among the newcomers. His class includes Vinnie Barbarino (Travolta) and the other so-called “Sweathogs,” played by Robert Hegyes, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Ron Palillo. ‘Money Honey’ Maria Bartiromo works for the viewers

After a couple of decades at CNBC, where her financial smarts and good looks earned her the nickname of “Money Honey,” Maria Bartiromo, the first TV journalist to report from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, made the leap this past spring to Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel. Reportedly she got more money, but she may have wound up with less sleep. “I was on CNBC from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.” she says during a break from the annual Cable Show in downtown Los Angeles, “now I’m on from 9-11. So I’m up at 4:30 in the morning, 5 a.m., so my schedule has completely changed. “The content is very similar. The Fox News Channel program on Sunday is a

big change for me, because I think it’s the biggest audience I’ve ever had.” Weekdays on FBN, the New York native is the host of “Opening Bell With Maria Bartiromo,” focusing on the financial markets; weekends on FNC, she’s at the helm of “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo.” Even though she’s reunited with her former CNBC boss Roger Ailes, Bartiromo knows who’s really giving the marching orders. “We’re looking at the audience,” she says, “saying, ‘OK, here’s a business channel that younger people are watching, that people in business are watching, what’s important to them? I think it’s tax policy, economic policy and ‘Where are the jobs?’

“Those are the kinds of subjects the audience is looking for us to cover.” Bartiromo also knows that the audience that’s tuning into see her wants to see just that. “The viewer is so smart,” she says. “They see right through it. If you’re trying to be someone you’re not, forget it. You’re going to be bounced off. It’s so important to be authentic and to be yourself. “It may be that someone says, ‘You know what, I don’t agree with that woman, but I like her because she’s actually telling me what she thinks. She’s herself, and I like it because she keeps it real.’ “So that’s what I’m trying to do, just to keep it real.”

When it comes to the U.S. Open, few are more accomplished than Serena Williams. Indeed, the 32-year-old native of Saginaw, Mich., has taken home singles titles from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., five times since 1999, including each of the past two years, a total exceeded by only Molla Bjurstedt Mallory (eight in the pre-Open era) and Chris Evert (six). Her 17 titles in Grand Slam play speak to her ability to get up for the big tennis stages. But this year has been different. While she has managed to hold onto the top ranking on the WTA Tour, Serena’s performances in majors in 2014 have been uncharacteristically lackluster as she’s taken fourth-, second- and third-round exits in the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon. Which Serena will show up at the tennis year’s final Slam, which gets going Monday, Aug. 25, on ESPN and ESPN2?
