1. The computer programs to make a will or trust are “cheap”. 2. Computer programs can create a will or trust quite easily and simply, in 5 minutes or less, without going to an attorney’s office for multiple visits. THE NEGATIVES: 1. Laws change all the time, and a program may not be up to date with the current and necessary laws in estate planning. Additionally, there are 50 States with 50 different laws on estate planning and as such, it is difficult to conceive a product that meets every States’ legal criteria. 2. The devil is in the details… everyone has heard this saying before. However, any mistakes in the prepared will or trust will only be discovered when it is too late and likely will invalidate the documents. 3. Before using one of these programs, pay careful attention to the DISCLAIMERS. Generally, they specify that the company is not acting as your attorney and the information provided is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney as well as they cannot apply the law to the facts of your individual circumstances. 4. It is a computer program, not an attorney. An experienced estate planning attorney can think outside the box and boundaries of a program. A computer program, however, is limited by a specific set of guidelines. Therefore, any specific problems or interesting solutions, which may require creative thinking, are limited when using a computer program. 5. These programs do not help you follow the formalities required to have a valid will or trust in Florida. Since the formalities involved in a will or trust can be complicated, there is a chance the document may not be valid. If a will or trust is invalid, the estate can become intestate, which means that your assets or income may be distributed to persons other than those persons you wanted to distribute originally in your will or trust. 6. Sometimes estate planning requires the production of a trust, instead of a will for various reasons, as discussed in previous articles. A program will not be able to provide the individualized specialization you may require. 7. A simple Will can start at a low price of $125.00. In the end, there is no substitute to having an experience attorney review and create your estate planning documents. As only an attorney, not a computer program, can provide you with legal advice and come up with ways to make your wishes a legal reality when the time comes. The Law Offices of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. has offices in Coral Springs, Plantation, Fort Lauderdale. Mayor Michael Udine’s Parkland Report

T

he month of October brought us many great fundraising events for cancer research. I attended a few and applaud all who help out with non-profits and fundraising for these fine groups. There are so many people putting in so much of their time volunteering and helping with non-profit organizations. We also recognized our numerous National Merit Finalists from Stoneman Douglas High School. So many great things are happening with our children at the local schools. We have seen some of the largest crowds for Douglas home football games. The Cross Country and Golf teams continue to excel, and the Drama and DECA programs continue to shine in all of their endeavors. Thank you to all who help with those and all the programs. The volunteer spirit is

what makes our City great! The City’s third annual 5K Run was another success. I would like to thank all of the great sponsors. The City will use all proceeds from this event to help fund non-profit organizations that help our City residents. Continuing on the education front, the Smart Start tutoring program is a great program that people should look into. The Smart Start tutoring program is a free, volunteer run, tutoring program to be offered in the City of Parkland. Smart Start has been designed to be a supplemental program that will assist students to better grasp the subjects that they otherwise would find difficult to master. The program, founded in 2013 by Stoneman Douglas High School students Jillian Kass and Jacob Oster, will provide tutoring services in Math, the

Sciences and English initially, and they hope to expand their offerings to all subject matters as they grow and add new tutors to the program. Tutoring will take place every other Saturday from 12 pm to 3 pm beginning September 21st. To schedule an appointment for tutoring, please email Smart Start at pleasehelp@ smartstartfl.com, or to find out how to become a tutor please email iwanttotutor@smartstartfl.com. • Chamber of Commerce - Coral Springs • Message from The President of the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce

I

t’s a new year for the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce and with it comes a new Board and a new Chairman of the Board. On October 24th, we hosted the Chamber’s first annual “Octoberfeast” at the Country Club of Coral Springs. Outgoing board members and volunteers were presented with plaques in recognition of their work. The Chamber could not exist without the hard work of many of its volunteers and this was our chance to acknowledge and show our appreciation to them. Personally, I have to thank Connie Carberg (Al Hendrickson Toyota), who with her unyielding passion and dedication for our Chamber led us through an amazing year that was not only fun but extremely productive. Thank you, Connie, for your support of the Coral Springs Chamber, for your leadership and for being an inspiration to our members. Our new leader for the 2013-2014 fiscal year is Chair Jerry Schwartz from Broward College and I know that we will not only get a lot accomplished but

By Cindy Brief we are also going to have a lot of fun. This year’s Board consists of: Executive Board members, Chair-Elect Bruce Weinberg (Weinberg & Co.), Secretary Joann Zollo (Forum Publishing), Treasurer Mark Fitzgerald, PNC Bank and Past-Chair Connie Carberg (Al Hendrickson Toyota). The other Board members include: Mark Fenton (Bonefish Grill), Diana Farrar (Oma’s Garden Florist), Xiomara Fraga (Coral Square Mall), Diana Guayara (Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center), Wendy King (Wellness with Wendy), Chip King (King Moving & Storage), Shirley Klein (Coldwell Banker), Bonnie Metviner (Coldwell Banker), Tony Milian (U18 Sports Medicine), Debbie Oistacher (Atlantic Technical Center), Anne Solomons (Touch Point Training Consultants), Mark Watson (Amtrust Bank), and Cindi Watts (Family Central). I look forward to continuing to work with this incredible team of talent “to provide opportunities and visibility for the success of our members through programs, referrals and advocacy”. The Coral Springs Chamber Leadership Institute Class of 2014 sponsored

by Al Hendrickson Toyota started in October with a bang! This diverse group of 21 participants encompasses a vast range of occupations and demographics and is highly reflective of our City. I think this can be the most incredible class we have had yet because of the direction of CS Chamber Leadership Alumni, led by Debbie Oistacher, who have provided the program and plans for the new Leadership program! A great time was had by the new class that had the opportunity to meet and network with Leadership alumni at the welcome reception held at Bonefish Grill. In addition to the delicious food and libations, a lot of networking and business was being done. The Leadership Coral Springs alumni, going as far back as 1995, had the chance to catch up with each other and mingle with the current class. Thanks to Baptist Health for sponsoring the event! The group is already starting to fundraise for the Chamber’s Education Foundation which benefits the DECA and BPA programs in our five local high schools. We look forward to getting to know these current and future business leaders in Coral Springs! The Coral Springs Chamber consists of over 500 businesses in the local area working together. And since people say that timing is everything, if you are thinking of joining the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce this is definitely the time to do it! Right now we are approaching the deadline for our newest publication, The Coral Springs City Profile and Business Directory, that will be distributed to approximately 500 Chamber members as well as given out to the many visitors that go to City Hall and City Hall in the Mall and will be distributed to realtors, hospitals, the library, and various businesses around town. • Community News • City of Coral Springs seeks donations to feed families this Thanksgiving

T

By Nicol Jenkins

he City of Coral Springs is once again reaching out to deliver a Thanksgiving dinner to families.

The City’s annual THANKSforGIVING event relies on community help to donate items for Thanksgiving baskets given to families in need. Residents and business owners are asked to give to this worthy cause as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Since 1988, volunteers have made 4,601 baskets for local families and collected over $99,337. “Employees became aware of a need in the City and decided to try and make a difference. We started the drive in 1988. Due to the increased need, we began partnering with the community in 2002,” said Co-Chairs Betty Webb, Mary-Lin Hoyer and Janis Humpage. Last year, they raised $4,459 and made 239 dinner baskets each with a $15 certificate for the main course plus 26 food pantry boxes. But the need is growing. The most needed non-perishable items include: canned yams, mashed or flaked potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, canned corn and green beans, canned fruit, and cookies. People may also give monetary contributions to the cause. All donated items are placed in baskets, along with a gift certificate for a turkey, ham or main dish, and distributed through local religious institutions to pre-selected families. “We hope to do at least as well as last year. Unfortunately, due to the economy, requests increase every year. We work with the local religious institutions to reach our residents who may not be able to enjoy a traditional meal without assistance. In 1988 we provided 38 baskets and it has increased every year. In the 2000’s, we were providing 200 to 300 each year and the need is still growing,” said the Co-Chairs. “When we deliver the baskets the gratitude from the religious institutions is overwhelming. We are so grateful that the City of Coral Springs is able to assist so many families who are in need.” Donations can be dropped off at: Coral Springs City Hall, 9551 W. Sample Road; City Hall in the Mall, 9239 W. Atlantic Blvd.; and Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive. All donations must be made by Friday, November 8.

For more information, call 954-345-2211 or 954-346-1746.

• Community News • Fundraisers bring awareness to Childhood Cancer

T

By Nicol Jenkins he local community has come together to help children with cancer.

Many residents attended a variety of charitable events to benefit Kids of Love Foundation, which focuses on the needs of children, whether they are medical, financial or educational. Kids of Love was started because a young boy wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and families with cancer. Kids of Love was founded in 2007 by Randall Slapikas of Coral Springs when he was 8 years old. Now six years later, 14-year-old Randall, who will be attending Coral Springs High School, has seen his vision come full circle. Today, Kids of Love is not only a 501(c) foundation, but is set up in middle schools and high schools as a club.

The first annual Strike Out Childhood Cancer BowlA-Thon was also a huge success. Making the news once again was their attempt to break the Longest Conga Line on Ice at Saveology IcePlex and on Wheels at Kabooms in Davie all in support of Childhood Cancer

toys, cards, craft items, small games, and hygiene items to give to children in the hospital. On October 26th, National Make A Difference Day, members of Kids of Love dressed up in costumes and made a visit to Northwest Medical Center, Coral Springs Medical Center and Joe DiMaggio Hospital for a “Spooktacular Pre-Halloween Party”. They interacted with patients while delivering these shoe box surprises. This month of November will be busy collecting toys for their 2nd Annual Toy Drive, and in December Kids of Love will partner with Saveology Iceplex in hosting a party to deliver these toys to families that have been met with some type of adversity. “Kids of Love mission is to contribute to the development of future leaders, educate and nurture the seeds of philanthropy and community service in our youth while helping kids with needs. Currently Kids of Love has clubs in multiple schools throughout Broward County and are expanding into Palm Beach County,” said Kim. For additional information on how to get involved with Kids of Love, contact 954-7572810, info@kidsoflove.org, www. kidsoflove.org or Friend them on Facebook at Kids Of Love - Kids Helping Kids with Needs.

The past few months were busy for the charity. Kids of Love and multiple members of the Coral Springs High School football team, including coaches, teachers from Ramblewood Middle, and Coral Springs City Commissioner Dan Daley participated in the St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving event raising over $3,700 for childhood cancer research. Broward County Commissioner Martin Kiar volunteered to shave Coral Springs Commissioner Dan Daley and Kids of Love President, Crazy Ray Slapikas’ head the day of the event. This event prompted the Key Club of JP Taravella to join forces with Kids of Love and host a head shaving event at JP Taravella. The event also raised money for Camp Boggy Creek, a year-round medical camp for children with serious illnesses. In addition, Kids of Love put on the 4th Annual Back 2 School Bash at Sawgrass Lanes featuring Star Wars characters from the 501st Legion and Pirates of the Caribbean from Port Royal Buccaneers. Adding to the mix this year,

Kids of Love also held its first Back to School Bash at Saveology IcePlex bringing in over 600 students for a fun night of skating, according to Randall’s mother Kim Slapikas.

A busy month for Riverside Elementary School

R

• Schools •

By Sherry Rosen iverside Elementary School has many school wide events coming up during the month of November.

Join us for a “magical” evening with magician and illusionist Gary Goodman at J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs on Friday, November 15 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, and proceeds will benefit Riverside Elementary PTO. For more information contact President@RiversidePTO.com. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Rockin’ Coral Springs Since 1998

“Muffins for Moms and Donuts for Dads” is our monthly morning Reading Program sponsored by PNC Bank. Join us on Friday, November 8th from 7:15 am to 7:50 am. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and their children to start the morning with a good book and a breakfast treat, as well as participating in our school banking program! Don’t forget! There will be no school on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11th. Riverside celebrates report cards, quarterly at McDonald’s on University and Atlantic. Enjoy the celebration on Wednesday, November 13th from 5 pm to 7 pm.

The students of Riverside Elementary’s Multiage K/1 class in Coral Springs also recently celebrated Freedom Week in quite an artistic way. Freedom Week is part of our Common Core Curriculum. The 40 students, ages 5 and 6, created a beautiful American flag by using their little hands and feet all while learning about our flag.

Each hand print represents each one of the 50 states while the 13 stripes, red and white, symbolizes our original 13 colonies. The children loved this project! It was a fun way to teach the children about how each one of us, regardless of our background, make up the United States. The children discussed what the flag means to them. The flag is currently hung in the cafeteria where all the students, faculty and staff can enjoy.

We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, and there will be no school from November 27th through December 1st .

Riverside Elementary also held its annual Grandparent’s Night. All of the grandparents, some even veterans, loved seeing the flag. Mrs. Sloan and Mrs. King are the teachers for the two Multi-age classes. Golden Johansson, Katie Verlsteffen and Chezerin Jusino were the parents who facilitated the project.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas student selected for prestigious U.S. Army All-American Marching Band By Nicol Jenkins

Jeremy Guttveg, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

O

ne of our local students has received a great honor to perform with the U.S. Army AllAmerican Marching Band.

Jeremy Guttveg, a member of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Band program, has been selected for the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. The Parkland student will now join an elite group of high school musicians who will perform during halftime at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on January 4, 2014. The U.S. Army All-American Marching Band recognizes the top 125 high school senior marching musicians and color guard members from across the country. Jeremy’s selection was based on an extensive audition consisting of musical performances, marching technique, and an essay communicating his passion for music and a desire to represent his school, community and country. This is the second consecutive year a student from Stoneman Douglas has been chosen for the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. “We are extremely excited for Jeremy. Being selected for the U.S. All-American Marching Band, out of more than 1,300 students across the country who apply, is an incredible honor,” said John Rusnak, the Director of Bands at Stoneman Douglas, adding, “Jeremy is an all-around great student who is dedicated to music and is a tremendous leader. We couldn’t be more proud of him.” Representatives from the U.S. Army also visited Stoneman Douglas High School for a press conference in the school’s auditorium to formally announce Jeremy’s selection for the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band. Congratulations to our local student on his accomplishments!

nly 73% of teens wear their safety belt. 40% have used social media while driving. 55% have seen their parents texting and driving in the past 30 days. Do we have your attention? J.P. Taravella DECA in Coral Springs is conducting a three-month chapter project called Distracted Drivers Destroy Dreams to educate and change behaviors that lead to accidents and injuries. After conducting observational and written research, the informative movement will begin with the display of a damaged car from a (drunk/texting) driving accident placed in the front of the school. A banner will be signed by students pledging that they will not text and drive and will wear their seat belts.

“Silence for Dreams” took place on October 29th, at the high school and is designed in memory of U.S. teens who lost their lives to automobile accidents and their dreams that remain unfulfilled. 100 DECA members wore all black with shirts that have various teen driving facts printed on them. They silently walked the halls of JPT as a group at 7:15 in the morning to signify those who lost their lives. Throughout the day, black cards with different teen driving stories were handed out and then turned back in signed for a pledge/drawing. continued on next page

continued from page 20 (JP Taravella DECA) To grasp the attention and hearts of even more students, on Tuesday, November 5th, DECA will be holding assemblies during school to inform our peers about our impacting cause. Speaking during our assemblies will be Jose Rada, Executive Director of Broward-Dade Safety Council; a mother, whose daughter was killed by an impaired driver; the Angels on Your Shoulders Program Director; and a young driver who was convicted of DUI. No-Texting contracts will be handed out, and Vince and Larry, the Crash Dummies will be in attendance (on loan from the Broward County Safety Commission). Hundreds of students will attend a physical and visual awareness activity on Monday, November 25th. A Rollover Vehicle/Safety Belt Convincer supplied by the Florida State Police will be displayed. Students will see dummies thrown from the vehicle and individually experience safety belt use at 10 mph. Also planned in November are drunk driver goggle usage through the CSPD, and a school-wide PowerPoint presentation with discussion questions and texting and driving facts from the Toyota Teen Driver website. Post campaign research will be conducted in December to determine the impact of our project on JPT students. Project Chairpeople are Jeffrey Krammer, Jeremy Abcug, and Jenna Horowitz. DECA is a national student marketing association with over 180,000 members across the United States. Students participate in community service projects and compete at the district, state and national levels in various individual and teamoriented marketing competitive events. State competition is held in Orlando in March, and the international convention will be held in Atlanta, Georgia in May of 2014. J.P. Taravella DECA has 310 members. J

ohn M. Congemi, recently introduced Brianna Belmont and Austin Wagoner, as the deserving recipients of “Student of the Month” honors representing J.P. Taravella High School. These outstanding pupils were chosen for this wonderful honor based on their academic achievements, character, school spirit, service hours, and community involvement.

Brianna plans on attending Florida Gulf Coast University. She is currently a cheerleader and volleyball player at Taravella, and still finds time for her involvement as Editor-In-Chief of the yearbook. Receiving straight A’s in every subject, she is also involved heavily in the National Honor Society. Brianna has two brothers and is the daughter of her extremely parents, Stacey and Adam Belmont. Austin is a 17–year old senior preparing to attend Broward College for two years, becoming certified as a legal automobile mechanic in the United States. While there, he will intern for Nissan and work his way up in the company. He will attend Florida Atlantic University to secure his Master’s Degree in Engineering. Nick Boyer is shown

Local student’s mission to space camp By Nicol Jenkins

N

ick Boyer was far from his hometown of Coral Springs when he became an astronaut for a week at space camp.

Boyer, an eighth grade student at Coral Springs Middle School, was awarded a full scholarship to Space Camp Aviation Challenge at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. During the week-long camp, Boyer learned much about space exploration, including flying fighter jets in a simulation cockpit, experiencing a simulated helicopter crash into the water by being in a Hydro Dunker, learning how to build shelters and survive in the wild, performing SEAL operations with missions, experiencing the G-force of a fighter pilot in the Centrifuge, leadership training, and learning about many types of airplanes and their history. It was the local student’s dream and he spent much time and dedication to make it a reality. Boyer spent months working on his application which included an essay, a design of a space patch describing his achievements, and letters of recommendation among other things. He applied in the “Academic Achievement” category being a straightA student in the gifted program at Coral Springs Middle. Besides his academic

achievement, Boyer excels on the CSMS Track Team, as a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do (karate), an accomplished cyclist, and on I-9 football. He is also active in the community and his church. This year in addition to the regular scholarships, the Space Camp Hall of Fame decided to give a special scholarship to Boyer. Penny Pettigrew, Payload Communications Manager and Director of the Space Camp Hall of Fame, said the committee selected Nick because “he represented the Best of the Best”. She said they handpicked him to receive their “Hall of Fame Scholarship”, which is considered to be the top honor. He was the first recipient to receive the Space Camp Hall of Fame Scholarship

for Aviation Challenge and the only one chosen out of hundreds of applications from all over the world. Boyer was also singled out by former astronaut Don Thomas during his talk to the kids at Space Camp and congratulated in front of hundreds of campers for being chosen as the recipient of this award. His mother Susan Boyer says she’s very proud of her son’s accomplishments. Nick said it was the best vacation he had ever been on in his life. “The experience was really indescribable, and I have memories that will last a lifetime,” said Nick. Congratulations to our local student!

here is a really excellent restaurant at the far end of a shopping plaza, with a BJ’s as the anchor store, on Hillsboro Blvd. just west of State Rd.7/441. This unassuming location is not where you would expect to find one of the best restaurants in the area. Renzo’s Italian Restaurant Parkland owner Patrizia Furlan and Chef Giuseppe Carriero along with a gracious and friendly staff will give you as enjoyable a dining experience as you are likely to find anywhere. Here are a few recommendations for you when you visit. One of the Chef’s favorites is the Linguini Frutti Di Mare featuring shrimp and clams marinara. I got treated to a sampling of delicious dishes. The first was a real surprise – Calamari Steak on the Grill - Grilled calamari strips flavored with olive oil, lemon, a hint of garlic and white wine. The calamari had a charcoal grilled flavor and was firm yet tender – really nice on a bed of arugula lettuce. Next the Chef brought me Yellow Tail Snapper Origanata – it was perfectly cooked and plated with a garlic, butter and parsley sauce, lightly breaded with a side of grilled zucchini and red peppers. While focusing on traditional Italian dishes, Chef Carriero has focused on locally available items with seafood a natural. Next I sampled the Chef’s Sea Bass Livornese. It was served on a bed of angel hair pasta with a light marinara sauce and topped with grilled olives, capers and onions. There is no way I could pick which of the two fish dishes was more delicious. Noticing that I was trying different dishes, another diner, who was having Fettucini Bolognese, reported that it was the best Bolognese sauce she had ever had. This is a wonderful restaurant. It is upscale but family friendly. They have a summer special menu for under $30 a person for a complete meal. I finished off a great, really two meals, with some Tiramisu and an espresso. A visit to Renzo’s in Parkland will be one of the best dining adventures you have ever had.

GG’s of New York Italian Restaurant and Pizza Now that’s Italian!! By TRISH GIANDO

GG’

s of New York brings back many wonderful memories of when I first moved to South Florida. The Delgardio family established their restaurant business in 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. The family opened the North Lauderdale restaurant in 1976. Today, I consider it to be an icon for this community. My husband and I were newcomers to South Florida back in 1977. We were homesick and because of our Italian descent, we found it difficult to find a “good” Italian restaurant. Alas, we happened upon GG’s of New York. The red-checkered tablecloths, excellent food and warm atmosphere made us feel as if we had found a taste of “home” right here in South Florida. Not many businesses in Florida remain at the same location for this many years. This is a testimonial in itself. GG’s is still offering the finest of Italian recipes, handed down from three generations in the Delgardio family and prepared with the same special care. As a family-run restaurant, they know how important family meals really are. My favorite lunch is the Pasta Faggioli – it tastes just like my Mom’s. Planning a celebration? Party platters are available, ideal for family style events or buffets. Their signature dishes are sure to please guests at any celebration. They offer lunch and early bird specials and a children’s menu. Beer and wine are also served. Prices are good, food is great and the service is exceptional. Check them out. GG’s of New York is located at 5440 N. State Rd. 7, North Lauderdale. 954-484-0400. Hours are: 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Open 7 days a week. Dine-in or take out. You may also view their menu online at www.ggsofny.com.

FAMILY-STYLE ITALIAN DINING By Dewey Oxberger

ver since my arrival in South Florida over 20 years ago, Buca di Beppo has been a favorite dining location for my entire family. The décor and ambiance fits not only the name of the establishment, but presents the comfort and dining experience reminiscent of simpler times growing up as a child. The friendly, courteous, and warm greeting extended from the hostess as soon as you set foot in the door, is genuine and sincere. Before you’re seated, you realize firsthand that a pleasurable time is in store. The Lunch Menu, featuring an array of dishes served weekdays until 3:00 pm, features soups and salads, pizzas, baked pasta dishes, paninos, pastas, numerous entrees, and tantalizing desserts. “Specials” are available at the price of only $4.95. As dinner time approaches, Buca di Beppo presents its customers with a menu that virtually makes it impossible to choose just one item. The dishes are served “Family-Style”, meaning that each dish is meant to be shared, similar to eating at home. “Buca Small” dishes serve two or more people, and “Buca Large” dishes serve four or more individuals. The value, portions and flavor of these delicious items, are unmatched …. Your party will leave with an abundance of leftovers for the following day. Divisional Vice President Mark Ehrli, was gracious and accommodating as we entered the restaurant. After introducing us to several employees, we were escorted to our table. Bradley, our waiter, was friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. We started with drinks and wine, and the meal escalated into an experience like none other. The house wine was quite pleasing and the Margueritas were outstanding. Following drinks, the Chopped Antipasto arrived and everyone shared the most enjoyable salad imaginable. The Buca signature Italian vinaigrette transformed this gigantic item into a “meal” Our table ordered the Prosciutto Stuffed Chicken, Chicken Cannelloni, and Cheese Manicotti. The portion sizes, taste, and presentation were amazing. I thought it was my last meal, and I was headed for the electric chair at midnight. It was difficult to choose a favorite dish …… every dish was outstanding!

Buca presents its customers with a “first-rate” dining experience.

Whether you’re in the mood for lasagna, sheels, chicken or veal dishes, pizzas, specialty pastas, or traditional pasta item, Buca di Beppo has a meal with your taste-buds in mind. With an extensive wine menu (red and white), and a nice selection of beer and cocktails to transform your meal into a pleasurable image of just what Italian cuisine should be, Buca presents its customers with a “first-rate” dining experience. The staff set the tone for the entire evening. Partner Lamarl Collins, and Assistant General Manager Kurt Kaufman, could not have been more accommodating. There wonderful demeanor and expertise about the many dishes served were instrumental in our selections. Chef Jerry, flown in from Hawaii for the opening of the restaurant, has been with the restaurant for 16 years. That tells me all I want to know. Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant is now open at the Coral Square Mall, located at 9469 West Atlantic Boulevard in Coral Springs. Visit the restaurant, or call them at 954-753-4044 for lunch and dinner specials. Buca di Beppo …… Sharing good food, in good company, in a fun atmosphere, at a great price with plenty left over for lunch tomorrow.

SANTO’S MODERN AMERICAN BUFFET AND SUSHI Setting the Standards for Buffet Dining

T

By Brian Weidenbacher

he moment you step through the doors of Santo’s Modern American Buffet and Sushi, your taste buds, and excitement, rise with uncontrollable anticipation. Your party will be greeted by a hostess with a friendly and courteous smile, explaining the different stations of food. The “black and white” décor creates a classy statement defining the dining room, while the waiters and waitresses supply swift and pleasant service. The “Sushi” area has a vast array of selections. The lunch and dinner choices differ, but each item is fresh, tasty, and mouthwatering. On a recent visit, salmon, shrimp, and tuna sushi, dynamite rolls, California rolls, Manhattan rolls, banana rolls, sweet crab rolls, and my personal favorite Futokami rolls were on display. The choices were difficult, so choosing one of each was a “no-brainer”. Trying to select items from the “Raw Bar” area was just as difficult. If Snow Crab legs are a favorite, by all means pile your plate high and enjoy a wonderful delicacy from the ocean. Oysters, clams, mussels, cocktail shrimp and lobster claws, adorn the raw bar, making it a virtual impossibility to choose a favorite entity. On your next trip up, the “Grill and Carving” station offers New York steaks, prime rib, grilled chicken, grilled sausages, grilled pork loin, smoked brisket, and grilled vegetables. Growing up on beef and pork my entire life, selecting the prime rib and grilled pork loin proved to be a wise, and habit forming addiction. The brisket melted in my mouth, while the flavors of the vegetables complimented the meat choices perfectly. The “Salad” region has Caesar salad, Thai shrimp salad, simple salad, smoked chicken, cucumber salad, and seasonal fruit. Lobster bisque, chicken vegetable, broccoli, potato, carrot, and miso soup are sure to grace the soup portion of your dining “experience”. The “Entree” category features Santo’s lo mein and fried

30

rice, roast pork, ribs, spring rolls, French fries, vegetable tempura, lobster puffs, potato skins, steamed corn, and mashed potatoes. The selections seem endless, and the presentation resembles artwork. The elegance and creativity shown by owner Johnny, and chef Eric Chen, are just two of the particulars that sets Santo’s apart. Then, just when you think it’s over, the “Dessert” portion of the meal calls to you like a mermaid with an ancient mariner. Your eyes survey the sweet treats, and your heart skips a beat. There’s chocolate mousse, tres leche cake, carrot cake, bread pudding, tiramisu cream, and ice cream. Every offering is a little taste of heaven ….. but, the crème brule and Thai donuts, will certainly leave you in a state of euphoria. The crème brule has the exact same flavor, texture, and essence, as some of the finest restaurants in New Orleans. The Thai donuts, topped with condensed milk are, quite possibly, the finest dessert I’ve ever eaten. Customers have a clear view into the kitchen area, and can readily see the fresh, quality food being prepared for your dining experience. Santo’s features an Organic Egg Brunch on Saturday and Sunday, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, serving custom made organic egg omlettes, pancakes, French toast, crepe suzettes, Belgium waffles, cooked to order organic eggs, muffins, and croissants for an unbelievable price of $15.25. Santo’s sets the standards in buffet dining, while creating and ambiance that defines quality, friendly service, and the tastiest, freshest food available. Santo’s Modern American Buffet and Sushi is conveniently located at 4690 N. State Road 7, Suite 106, in Coconut Creek. You can call ahead for additional information, specials, and pricing at (954) 971-6882, or (954) 971-6872. Santo’s …… Not just a buffet, but an experience in dining that will seduce you into planning your next visit!

oday, lawsuits are everywhere. Lawyers are awarding larger amounts of money than ever before. Homeowners, auto, and watercraft policies have a specific limit on the amount of coverage they will afford for a lawsuit, and if an unfortunate accident should happen that is your fault, do you have enough liability insurance from your current policies to cover your costs for negligence? Since no one can predict how much you may be sued for by an injured party, umbrella insurance is not just for the wealthy anymore, but a needed protection for every policyholder. Umbrella insurance is designed to give you added liability protection above and beyond the limits on homeowners, auto, and watercraft insurance policies. With an umbrella policy, depending on the insurance company, you can purchase an additional 1 to 5 million in liability protection. This protection is designed to “kick-in” when the liability on other current policies has been exhausted. In order to understand why we need an umbrella policy, we must first understand how our primary policies work. The liability portion of a homeowners or auto policy that pays for expenses, such as the injured persons’ medical bills, rehabilitative therapy, and lost wages due to the negligence of the at fault person. The liability portion of an insurance policy also covers legal defense if the negligence would happen to land the at fault person in the court room. After adding up all of the expenses for the injured party and the legal fees of the negligent person, the standard liability on your homeowners or auto policy is often not enough. A personal liability umbrella insurance policy can give you added liability protection without a large added cost. Depending upon each policyholders’ specific situation, the average umbrella policy will run about $350.00 a year. Additional liability insurance is inexpensive, especially compared to the added coverage one gains. Furthermore, liability insurance covers your non-business activities anywhere in the world. Having the added protection of an umbrella policy is coverage no one should go without.

Vintage Joye™ became a nationally known success through selling the public only Genuine Products and Premium Eliquid made in the USA in their FDA Registered Lab. OLYMPIC HOPEFULS …

old ….. The word “gold” sounds powerful. It’s bright, coveted, sought-after, and shines like a proud Marines’ boots at inspection. It’s the reason people flocked to California in 1849, and the material we slide on our ring finger when we get married. It’s also the substance that’s shaped into a round, cherished medal placed around an athlete’s neck every four years, while their country’s national anthem is played. Such is the power of the Olympics, and the trip to get there. Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier are in the midst of that exciting, adventurous pilgrimage together, searching for gold in Russia at the 2014 Olympic Games. Haven and Brandon’s history together began in 2002, as competitive roller skaters. After winning the Silver Medal in 2003 at the USA Artistic Roller Skating National Championships, the pair traded their “wheels for blades”, proving to be a wise choice. In 2008, the duo was awarded the Bronze Medal in the US National Intermediate Pairs Competition Championships. As with any young person, growing, maturing, and development played a major part for both of these wonderfully talented athletes. The couple parted ways for a period, and as fate would have it, gravitated back together in 2011, realizing that the chemistry was stronger than ever ……. ultimately becoming the 2013 Gold Medal winners at the World Junior Pair Champions held in Milan, Italy. Work-ethics, goals, dedication, and devotion are the main components shared by this charming team. Add to these goal-oriented qualities the brilliant coaching of Silvia Fontana and John Zimmerman, and you can see how the 2014 Olympics is a realistic goal. Andrew Torgashev, lacing up his skates at the age of 5, became enchanted by the sport, and after two short years convinced his parents to allow him to compete …. a decision that did not go unrewarded. The North Broward Prep student is a true warrior on the ice. After turning in a top performance while winning the Juvenile Division of the 2012 U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships, Andrew backed it up by winning the 2013 Prudential U. S. Figure Skating Championship in Omaha, NE. His performance in Omaha was so solid, not even a fall on the ice detracted from his routine. Seventeen year-old Briley Pizzelanti desires to get her Italian citizenship and skate for the Italian National Team. The dedication and hard work Briley exhibits, has transformed this beautiful skater into a “force” on the ice. Winning the Junior Ladies Freestyle (Unrestricted) Division at the Sunshine State Games Figure Skating competition has certainly set that dream in motion. Every single one of these marvelous skaters hasn’t won their medals ….. they’ve EARNED them!

So it is no surprise that the football team came together once again to take a stand against childhood cancer. Freshman Randall Slapikas, a junior varsity football player, is also founder of “Kids of Love,” a non-profit organization he started at the age of eight. “I am healthy, I can go to school and play whenever I feel like. I realized how lucky I was to do all that and not have to deal with cancer like so many other kids do,” Slapikas said. With this thought in mind, Slapikas and his father teamed up with St. Baldrick’s, an organization that seeks to raise awareness of childhood cancers. Along with St. Baldrick’s, Kids of Love helped coordinate a head shaving event at Micky Bryne’s pub in Hollywood. The event helped raise throusands of dollars to fund cancer reasearch.

Senior Dominic Versaci, who was honored to take the first clippers to his coach’s head, joined the cause with no hesitation. “ When coach asked for our support I know right away it was the right thing to do. I have seen what a toll cancer can take on a family and I was glad to do what I could to create awareness. ,” said Versaci. un World of South Florida sets the standards when a civilian is considering purchasing a firearm for the safety of their own lives, as well as their entire family. Thoughtfulness and attention to detail must be the highest of priorities. Randall Waltuch, owner of Gun World of South Florida, along with his talented staff, focus their attention on personal protection taught the appropriate way. A retired police commissioner recently visited the store and gave the establishment nothing but high praise. He was quoted as saying, “I would love to have had some of these individuals under my command. It would have made my job easier.” Wonderful compliments from a man that spent most of his life in law enforcement. Classes in gun safety range from the Introduction of Handguns to Advanced Concealed Weapons and are taught in a premier state-of-the-art facility. The problem concerning handguns brings forth the ageold question... “How does the Police Department feel about citizens carrying concealed weapons”? In a recent interview, Lieutenant Joe McHugh of the Coral Springs Police Department, was quoted as saying, “My personal opinion is that citizens should have protection for themselves, their family, and homes. Responsibility in the use of firearms should be top priority.” Lieutenant McHugh also noted that, “If a civilian is carrying a concealed weapon and is stopped by a police officer, he should immediately inform the officer that he is carrying a concealed weapon and present proper identification.” McHugh also noted that weapons should be stored in a locked area and away from children. Also, verify your instructor’s qualifications before taking any of the classes. Officials of Law Enforcement have a more complicated method of training the police officers in the most advanced tactical use of weapons and do not hold classes for civilians. Officers in the Coral Springs Police Department have training as often as every three weeks. Gun World of South Florida sets itself apart from the others. t is no secret that today’s home burglaries are a problem. According to data from the FBI 2012 crime report it suggests that we can expect 1 in Robert Zajic every 36 homes in the United States to be burglarized in 2013. Each burglary usually results in an average loss of $1,675 per break in. Statistically 34% of burglars enter through the front door and head directly to the master bedroom. The most common items in the master include cash, electronic equipment, gold, silver, jewelry, and guns. Other entry points include, 23% enter the home through the first floor windows, 22% enter through the back door, 9% enter

through the garage, 6% enter through other unlocked entrances and storage areas of the home, 4% enter through the basement, and 2% enter through second floor entrances. The next areas to be targeted are home offices and B2000009 formal rooms with A2000248 openly displayed valuables. Most of these items are easy to sell through pawnshops and flea markets or are easy to pass on through a black market type of trade for use in the perpetration of other crimes.

The misconception is that most burglaries happen at night because people falsely believe that criminals prefer to operate under the cover of darkness, whereas in fact they occur between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. These are the times people are at work and kids are in school. The peak time is 10 am to 3 pm. Homeowners are usually home after 6 pm and this significantly increases a burglar’s chance of being caught. great new store has opened up at 8055 W. age, a burglar will spend eight to twelve minutes in a home. The more difficult you make your home for burglars to enter the less likely they are to target your house. With affordable technological advances today it could possibly play a large part in the reduction of burglary rates throughout the US. This is why we suggest you invest and purchase a quality alarm system WITH a quality surveillance camera system. The best thing is to have one professionally installed so you know you are adequately covered. Some insurance companies will also give you a discount on your homeowner’s policy for having these systems installed. Alarm signs and (or) decals are also a great way to let potential burglars know your house is protected. Currently, data shows that homes without security systems are 2.7 times more likely to be targeted by a burglar. Whichever company you choose to purchase and install your systems, make sure they are licensed, insured and reputable. Make your home more difficult to enter by installing jams on windows, patio doors and deadbolts on all entry doors. Ensure that overgrown shrubbery is trimmed, and keep the outside of your home clutter free and make sure to lock your doors. • Business Connections • The 3 most important factors in choosing an agent

H

ow many Real Estate agents do you have to choose from? The term “a dime a dozen” comes to mind, doesn’t it? The truth is, yes, there are a ton of Realtors available at your disposal. There may not be many however who can provide all you need to obtain your buying or selling goals. Protect yourself and take these three factors into account when selecting your next Realtor.

Honesty & Ethics There may be no more important factor then that of honesty and ethics when choosing a Realtor. Working with an agent with low ethics or one that you cannot trust to be 100% honest throughout the process is a recipe for disaster. It is imperative that you work with an agent with strong ethics and an inherent character of honesty. Many agents will skew the truth to obtain business. I’ve seen some go as far as to pose with someone else’s wife and children to give the impression of a “family based” agent. I can’t imagine how this person would react when asked about their wife and kids. Starting a business relationship based on misleading advertising is a surefire way to create future issues during the transaction. If you’re not working with an agent who is 100% honest and ethical, how can you truly be sure you have obtained an agent with your best interests at heart?

54

Advertising & Marketing When selling your home it is crucial that you work with an agent whom firmly understands the importance of advertising and marketing. While the MLS alone can drive sales, having an agent who knows how to implement an advertising campaign personalized for your home is essential. Many agents will tout the campaigns offered by their firm and most will count on this marketing alone as the only means to promote your property. In these scenarios the home never receives any true personalized campaigns, and simply obtains “cookie cutter” marketing. Selling at a high dollar in a short period of time requires constant promotion in new and unique ways; and more importantly personalized to the subject property. When interviewing or searching for an agent to sell your home, be sure you delve into their own personal marketing strategy, find out what they as an agent bring to you, the client.

Knowledge of your area Selling a product that you are

unfamiliar with is a fool’s errand. I’ve seen time and again agents with listings in areas they have zero knowledge of. Without a firm understanding of the locale you are selling in, there is absolutely no way to obtain top dollar for the inventory you hold. When selling, be sure that your agent is well versed in the area you reside in. Knowledge of your area’s schools, shopping, entertainment, etc are crucial. The convenience an area provides can often add value to a buyer’s perception of the home, in turn, netting you a higher sales price. These 3 simple factors will help you decide which agent is the right fit for you. The wrong partnership is a disservice to the entire process; be sure to conduct your own personal research prior to hiring your next Realtor. When you find the right fit it just may be a match made in heaven, brining along with it an attractive sales price in a short amount of time.

As We See It…

I

An Easy Recipe for a Healthy Pet

n our complex, fast paced lives today, keeping our pets healthy and happy has become another challenge. Keeping track of scheduled visits for regular veterinary care along with all the different medications we are told to give them, grooming appointments, researching new foods to replace those on recall complicates the little spare time we have. Most of our clients are looking to simplify this process and keep are fur kids well. Pet care does not need to be complicated and we can simplify. In over forty years of experience in the animal health industry, we have witnessed dynamic innovation in products to make our pets’ lives better. Fancy beds, eye protection, safer grooming products and tools, stylish collars and functional leads, clumping cat litter and more enhance our experience with our animals. There is nothing cuter than a well-groomed, clean smelling, fancy dressed puppy or kitty. We have also witnessed innovation that actually creates more complex and stressful lives for our pets. The advent of preventive medications which are technically all poisons, full of numerous side effects create stress and new health challenges. The development of food additives to enhance flavor fool our pets into eating unnatural, highly processed foods with preservatives, artificial colors and very little nutritional content actually adds to compromising their immune systems. In a natural world, we see all kinds of animals and wildlife living naturally healthy lives as they have throughout time. Parrots are known to live a hundred years, elephants for sixty and wolves twenty-five or more without the aid of doctors or dentists. These animals know which foods to eat without being subjected to processing, formal government programs or marketing propaganda. They grow, breed, give birth and raise their offspring without a manual. Our recipe for a healthy pet and yes, a healthier you is to look back to nature. The basic physiology and pathology of our domestication has not changed from our wild cousins and ancestors. The whole body is dependent on the fuel we ingest to keep all living creatures healthy. What are the foods our pets would consume if they were in the wild? How or do they prepare their meals? How do they rid themselves of parasites and pests? What about their hydration?

an all protein diet in that meat is a complex product with carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and more, all in the most bioavailable form. Our birds need a variety of seeds, grasses, fruits, vegetables, insects and more. Cows, horses, sheep and other grazing animals need a variety of fresh and dried toxic free forage. We must also avoid synthetic, highly processed medications and chemicals with their toxic side effects. A highly immune body resists disease leaving no need for so-called “preventives”. When medication is necessary, we need to limit it to immediate treatment and work to eliminate the causes, thereby creating a happier, healthier pet… and that’s the way we see it. Bill Piechocki, nutritional and animal health specialist and Dr Diane Sudduth, DVM are principles at BioVance Animal Health which operates Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL, and are also co-hosts of the #1 educational PetHealthCafe.com internet radio show. For over 40 years in the animal health field, they have provided us unparallel vision and information which they pass to their clients on a daily basis. You may reach them at www.BioVanceAHcom or 800-940-7387.

If we follow that model, feeding our pets a fresh, varied, natural, unprocessed species appropriate diet, we will be fueling the body with the dynamic balance that nature designed. Our dogs and cats are carnivores that require an animal based diet. This is not

Pasquale’s Pizza: A Slice Above The Rest By Brian Weidenbacher

O

nce you’ve taken your first bite of a Pasquale’s pizza, you instantly realize that every other pizza you’ve ever eaten has now become a distant memory. The freshest ingredients, taste, and quality of a pizza from Pasquale’s is unequalled. In September of 1988 George Marrone, Sr., with sons George, Jr., Mike, and Nick by his side, opened their first store at 10337 Royal Palm Boulevard in Coral Springs. Great food, service, and a friendly family atmosphere, prompted the opening of two more locations serving all of Northwest Broward County. In 2005, the family opened their second Coral Springs location at 5609 Coral Ridge Drive, operated by Michael Marrone. In the summer of 2010, the third South Florida location was established at 4690 North State Road 7, under the supervision of George Marrone, Jr. With a menu extending from great tasting healthy salads, to savory pasta dishes, calzones, pizzas, and zeppoles, Pasquale’s not

only offers great food, but unmatched service with a sense of gratitude to their loyal customers over the years. From the moment you walk through the doors at any of the three locations, you realize the restaurant is all about family and tasty food. Pasquale’s hasn’t forgotten what created its success and promises to continue the family tradition of serving the freshest prepared food at great prices. If alone or heading out with family for a nice, relaxing meal, Pasquale’s should be your next destination. Depending on which location you choose, ask to speak to one of the Marrone’s. Whether it’s George or Mike, you will immediately realize that you’re not just a customer, but a friend they haven’t met yet. Pasquale’s …… Not just your ordinary pizza restaurant, but a “slice above the rest”!
