More great news for the City of Parkland! We were recently notified by the Property Appraiser’s Office that again this year the overall assessment of our city-wide property values increased. This year our property values, according to the Property Appraiser’s Office, grew in excess of 6 percent! This high growth rate allows us to keep our millage rate as low as possible, while continuing to add to our services. The City of Parkland continues to do things right and it shows in so many ways throughout our community. While things typically slow down a little during the summer months, this year City staff will be busy with different projects throughout the City. Our Parks and Recreation Department continues to lead the way with their services and offerings to our residents. I hope everyone had a chance to check out the Sunshine State Lacrosse Tournament that was held last month in Parkland at Pine Trails Park. What a fabulous event! Teams from all over the State of Florida (and nation) made it to Parkland for a weekend of lacrosse. It was a great weekend and hosting the tournament in Parkland was a great way to show off the City to people from all over the State.

July 2014

As I walked around the event, I heard from many people complimenting the City, inquiring about home ownership and the schools in the area. Plus all of these out of town guests visited local businesses, restaurants and hotels in the area. These types of events that showcase the City of Parkland are a real positive for our area. I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer! Please remember it is Hurricane Season so make sure you have your personal Hurricane plan in effect in the event of any type of storm or other emergency. Have a plan!! It will help in the event that there is a situation; better safe than sorry! I urge you to sign up for our “Code Red” service on the City website so that you can get emergency updates. Think about adding both your home and cell phone numbers, this way you can be sure to receive any emergency messages should they be transmitted. As always, I value your questions or comments. Reach out and “Friend me” if you want to follow me on Facebook, or look me up on Twitter (www.twitter.com/michaeludine) if you want to follow my updates. I always try to tweet if there is an issue (traffic, water, etc.) that affects our residents; following me is a great way to stay informed. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at MUdine @cityofparkland.org.

Springs Police. Mullins Park is located at 10150 Ben Geiger Dr. Hope to see you all there. If you have any questions, call 954-345-2200. I’m so excited to tell you all about our first Little Free Libraries collection. This program was started in 2009 in Wisconsin to promote literacy and we are thrilled to have it now in Coral Springs. There is a little box, much like a birdhouse, located at Mullins Park behind Volunteer Services along Ben Geiger Dr. These boxes are designed to work as a free book exchange. We encourage all of you to participate and donate books by simply dropping them in the box. This is only the first of many that will be available throughout the City. For more information, call 954-346-4430. Our Police Department offers self-defense classes for women over the age of 13. This is a great program where participants will learn to be empowered in the event they are faced with a potentially dangerous situation. A new session begins Tuesday, August 5 at 6 p.m. and classes meet for four consecutive Tuesdays at the Public Safety Building. Cost is $25 but participants will receive a full refund after completing the course. For more information, call 954-346-1227. Lastly, if you are having financial trouble, I highly encourage you to visit the Family Success Center. They’re located at 10077 Ben Geiger Drive, right across Mullins Park. Case managers can help individuals looking to reinvent themselves. They offer free case management. If you’d like more information, call 954-357-5000. The future of Coral Springs new Municipal Complex plans underway By Nicol Jenkins

T

he City of Coral Springs will have a new municipal complex and is moving towards a new downtown area for residents and visitors. At a City Commission workshop last month, Commissioners approved the conceptual design from architect Young Song and her team from Song and Associates for the City’s future Municipal Complex. City Hall South, located at 9530 W. Sample Road, was also demolished last month. The building was originally a Morrison’s Cafeteria in 1977 and was later purchased by the City in 1985. The building was then repurposed and Community Development and Building Divisions were onsite for the over 20 of those years. “While we are happy to see this building come down and make way for our future Municipal Complex, we plan on preserving some of the existing trees that have been here for years,” said Deputy City Manager Jennifer Bramley. This site will become the next Municipal Complex area, which will feature a new City Hall, a parking garage and retail space. “This will

July 2014

be a historical moment for our City. We’ve talked about a new Downtown area for years now, and this is the first step toward having it come to fruition,” said Coral Springs Mayor Vince Boccard. Taking existing and future staffing needs into consideration, City Hall’s square footage is expected to be approximately 65,000 square feet in size. “I think this is a conservative plan but still meeting the needs of the community,” said Vice Mayor Larry Vignola. The Commission expressed the desire to include green initiatives in the Complex, as well as public space for the community to be able to use. In addition, the Commission

is hopeful that this project will serve as a catalyst for economic development. “We are trying to build a timeless, architectural space and overall, the concept is phenomenal. This will be a public space for current and future residents to enjoy for generations to come,” added Mayor Boccard. The Commission unanimously approved the conceptual design and authorized to proceed with the design and construction phase. For more information or to view the presentation, visit www. CoralSprings.org/downtown.

Connie carburg:

Not just another lady that enjoys Football! By Brian Weidenbacher

C

ountless women watch the NFL games each week, enjoying the thrills and excitement that’s produced by great athletes and the skills they possess. Also many women watch, or go to games, with their husbands, boyfriends, or fathers, and envision what it would be like to work for an organization like the New York Jets. Connie Carberg is that remarkable kind of woman. This dynamic woman just happens to be the NFL’s first female scout, breaking barriers in the football world. Connie, being a sports fanatic at even a very young age, would eventually turn her passion for the sport into a profession. Growing up as a “tomboy” in Babylon, New York, Connie was born with New York Jet blood flowing through her veins. Her father, Dr. Calvin Nicholas, was the teams Internist Physician, and her uncle, Dr. James Nicholas, was the Orthopedist Physician of the Jets. (continued on page 41)

City of Parkland recognizes Westglades Middle School Environmental Club By Nicol Jenkins

W

estglades Middle School students are bringing awareness to the importance of being environmentally conscious. The Parkland City Commission has recognized the Westglades Middle School Environmental Club for their project focusing on the environment and education. Recently, 150 future environmental

leaders from 15 middle schools across Florida, New England and the Mid-Atlantic presented their six-month long sustainability projects as part of the 20th anniversary Wheelabrator Symposium for Environment and Education. Among them were 10 students from Westglades Middle School’s Environmental Club, who shared the importance of fishing ethics for our oceans, waterways and canals. The Westglades students focused their presentation on how to be

an ethical and responsible fisherman by obtaining a fishing license, learning proper “catch and release” techniques, recycling fishing lines and more. The students also educated Parkland residents on this important topic by setting up an information booth at the City of Parkland’s Farmer’s Market. The Westglades team presented its project and solutions to peers and a panel of partners comprised of educators and environmental experts at the annual Wheelabrator Symposium. Ms. Shelby, the Environmental Club’s advisor and a science teacher at Westglades Middle School, has participated in all 20 years of Wheelabrator’s Symposium, impacting hundreds of students’ lives. Other Symposium projects have included saving the endangered wood stork and gopher tortoise, helping manatees and more. Parkland Mayor Michael Udine and City Commissioners honored the Westglades Middle School Environmental Club, Wheelabrator Technologies and Stella Shelby for their amazing accomplishments and commitment to the City of Parkland’s environment and education. A successful season for Marjory Stoneman Douglas lacrosse teams

T

he season was a winning one for the boys and girls lacrosse teams at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The Parkland City Commission recently recognized the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams. The 2014 Lacrosse Season for Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a true success on many levels. Both the Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams completed their third year as a varsity sport and faced their most challenging schedules in the history of the program. Additionally, over 50 student-athletes earned varsity letters this year, more than any other year. This year, the boys’ team ended the season ranked 26th in the state and made it to the district finals championship game where they lost 8-7. The coaching staff, led by head coach Ryan Burton and assistant coach Neil Macadory, were extremely proud of their team and the hard work

the boys put forth all season. Eleven athletes received a variety of District and Regional honors, and the team was proud to also have an All-American on its roster. The coaches are excited for the future of lacrosse at Stoneman Douglas and look forward to another successful season next year. The girls’ varsity team ended the season ranked 28th in the state with a 10-5 record, including a big win over Park Vista. Coached by John McClain and Corey Englehardt, the girls’ season ended in a hard-fought overtime loss in the district semifinals. This year, eight girls received a variety of District and Regional team honors, and two athletes were named to US Lacrosse’s All-Academic Team. The team is excited for the future and well-positioned for a successful 2015 season. T

wo factors influence the way your child succeeds in school; on grade level reading and knowledge of how to study. Gg’s of New York Italian restaurant & Pizza

Now that’s Italian! by trish giando GG’s of New York brings back many wonderful memories of when I first moved to South Florida. The Delgardio family established their restaurant business in 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. The family opened the North Lauderdale restaurant in 1976. Today, I consider it to be an icon for this community. My husband and I were newcomers to South Florida back in 1977. We were homesick and because of our Italian descent, we found it difficult to find a “good” Italian restaurant. Alas, we happened upon GG’s of New York. The red-checkered tablecloths, excellent food and warm atmosphere made us feel as if we had found a taste of “home” right here in South Florida. Not many businesses in Florida remain at the same location for this many years. This is a testimonial in itself. GG’s is still offering the

finest of Italian recipes, handed down from three generations in the Delgardio family and prepared with the same special care. As a family-run restaurant, they know how important family meals really are. My favorite lunch is the Pasta Faggioli - it tastes just like my Mom’s. Planning a celebration? Party platters are available, ideal for family style events or buffets. Their signature dishes are sure to please guests at any celebration. They offer lunch and early bird specials and a children’s menu. Beer and wine are also served. Prices are good, food is great and the service is exceptional. Check them out.

The Order Sons of Italy

A proud heritage in america

Gianna Ferrante, Linda Ferrante, Joseph Ferrante, Anthony Lingwai, Laura Lingwai, and Ron Lingwai

Structured in 1905 in New York City by Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro, as Figli d’Italia, the Order Sons of Italy in America is the largest and oldest organization uniting Americans of Italian descent in the U.S. The organization began as a support system for Italian immigrants during the late 19th and early 20th century creating free schools and helping Italian immigrants learn English. It has also provided life insurance, orphanages and homes for the elderly to name a few. They have evolved into a non-profit that helps raise money for charity and gives scholarships to deserving students. Their energies and untiring efforts have raised more than a million dollars—donating money to our military forces, medical research, cultural advancement and disaster relief around the world regardless of national or ethnic origin of the recipients. The Dominick Gentile Lodge No. 2332, one of the 650 chapters in the U.S., is an integral part of this national organization. Its members are of Italian descent, but they are now accepting non-Italians for membership. The Lisa Boccard Cancer Fund through Broward Hospital, Cooleys Anemia, Alzheimers, Autism, Lymphoma, and Leukemia Foundations are some that have benefitted from the Dominick Gentile Lodge’s efforts. Since 1975, their continued energies have proven to be a vital part of the ever-growing City of Coral Springs. Ciao my name is Anthony Lingwai. I am 18 years old and have been born and raised from an Italian descent family. Being an Italian to me means having great pride and high morals. My family is a close loving family with traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. We place a great importance on our family, church and community. I have learned this from my parents and my family. I put a great amount of focus towards my community. I have given over 600 service hours to my community, and also I have been in the Jaguar Marching Band for four years. With my involvement as a leader, The Chair of Prevention and Bulling in the Student Involvement Committee, I have helped in the war against bullying at my school. I have built a life goal to help the people in this great country of ours for as long as I live, and I plan to do this with psychology and to discover the hidden mysteries of the brain.

LARRY BERFOND

My friends wan

& THE GRASS ROOTS BEGINNING OF INTERNATIONAL JEWELERS EXCHANGE By Brian Weidenbacher

AS

2001 approached, Larry Berfond would receiving an important call from his father about joining “the family business”. We are now able to understand how his life had been tested in so many ways in order for him to arrive at this point. The International Jewelers Exchange would become his next, and final, stop. All of his skills and travels would be used to both maintain, and manage, the hundreds of tenants while building a new 20,000 square foot jewelry store in Aventura, along with stores in Boynton Beach, and Boca Raton. But, let’s digress first.

when we left left larry last When we left Larry last, he jumped back into the restaurant business. He opened yet another restaurant call New Café D’Estournel South 1988 with partner Bebert Oiknine. Aventura seemed like a logical choice. The place became an instant success. However, as the summer months approached, the customers faded like a fat kid playing dodgeball. The restaurant took on an entirely new

look as Berfond changed practically everything, including bringing in a giant lobster tank, and renamed the place Steamers-A Seafood Lovers Place. But, as usual, nothing stays status quo in Larry’s life. While serving upwards to 800 lobsters a day, music re-entered his life, his old partner at Silverado was failing, and he was called back for the New Silverado Café. Just as the New Silverado Café 1992 opened its doors the Dolphins moved their training facilities behind the location, so he reinvented the restaurant into a sports bar and he Sidelines Café was born. With his staff in place, he turned his apron in for the microphone, and became a nightly DJ at the place. The place was open until 4:00 AM, so people and employees from other restaurants were there for the fun. Disco music was blasting, people were having a great time, but once again, the “change bug” was whispering in Larry’s ear. He sold Sidelines Cafe to his staff, who still operate the place, now

called Geronimo’s. Once again, the fun and excitement continues for Larry with the Festival Auction Gallery. Knowing about as much about the auction business as Don Rickles knows about being nice, he jumped right in. He joined Florida’s top auctioneer, Jay Fugarman, and the owners of Festival Flea Market. It was “back to school” like Rodney Dangerfield to learn the business, and a short time later the Festival Auction Gallery opened at Festival Flea Market. Auction items consisted of jewelry, antiques, artwork, statuary, and collectables. But a true “nugget” was discovered when a dealer enlisted Berfond’s assistance in a certain item. However, to find out what it was, you’ll have to hold on for the next installment of this man’s life. Trust me, it will be well worth the wait—It’s Larry Berfond, and ANYTHING is possible with this guy!

Steps to Handling an Auto Insurance Claim By Melissa McFarland of Coral Financial Group

W

ith more than 220 million cars on the road today, it is likely that someday you will have an accident and need to file an auto insurance claim. The good news is that it most likely will not involve personal injury but rather collision and comprehensive coverage. For the most part, the claims process for vehicle damage is simple: you make a claim, the adjuster comes out to estimate the cost to repair the damage, the insurance comp any sends you a check for that amount less your deductible and you use it to pay for the repairs. Having an auto accident can be a traumatic and upsetting experience. If you know the proper steps to follow, it can make that experience a bit more bearable. Step 1: (at the accident scene) Call 911 if someone has a life-threatening injury. If there’s no emergency, don’t tie up 911, call your local police department and they will send an accident unit out to assess the

38 •OTN

situation and file the police report. Step 2: Exchange contact information and auto insurance information with the other parties involved. The police will also collect this information but it is also good for you to have it, as a police report may take up to 10 days to get back. Step 3: Look for witnesses who will be willing to tell what they saw and get their contact information as well. A witness is a crucial key to determining who was at fault. Insurance companies will be less likely to raise your premiums for a not at fault accident. Step 4: Once you determine who is at fault, contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Many have a 24-hour claim-filing service by phone. Your insurance ID card should provide the number. The claims advocate will assist you in getting the initial claims information. Step 5: (if the other party is at fault) You should advise the other party’s insurance company that you’re pursuing a claim through your carrier and will seek reimbursement for costs your carrier will not

pay, including your collision insurance deductible. Step 6: You’ll get a phone call from the insurance company asking for your version of the events that led to the accident. You need to prepare for this. Make sure you have as much information regarding the specifics of the accident as possible. Step 7: The adjuster will come out to take a look at the damage to your vehicle and will come up with an estimate of what it will take to repair it (or replace it, if it’s totaled). Then, the insurance company will cut a check in the amount of the repair, minus any collision deductible amount. At this point your car should be repaired and the claims process is over. It is important to remain calm and collected during the time of an auto accident. Be smart and know the seven steps above to avoid any needless frustration and anxiety when it comes to dealing with auto claims. Coral Financial Group is located at 9764 W. Guard Service or Video Surveillance Systems?

his is a question that is asked many times by condo associations. Which is better, guards or cameras? They both have their pros and cons and it really depends on your situation and property. Here are a few differences. Having a physical “security officer” on your property can and will give a presence of security which will give residents and their guests peace of mind that someone is always there. A security

officer is always a great deterrent to thieves or kids thinking about targeting your community. Chances are that if they see a security officer they will move on to a property that doesn’t have any security. A security officer may also be the properties “ambassador” when stationed at a front desk that meets and greets residents and their guests. The officer may also handle mail, deliveries, answer questions, announce guests and help with other condo issues as well as security. Having a security officer on property can also be assigned to monitor the pool, clubhouse and office of July 2014

the property as well as locking or unlocking the facilities. A security officer doesn’t have to be stationed in one area and can monitor areas that are not well lit and in between parked vehicles. Manned security is also one of the largest reoccurring budget items for a community and it will eventually increase over time. Having cameras on your property will also give a sense of security. Cameras are also a great deterrent but they are vulnerable to the seasoned thieve. Although cameras never get sick, take vacations or leave the property and can work 24/7, they cannot prevent a crime from happening, only record the event. Camera systems are mostly stationary and only record one particular area. Some communities use cameras at their gated entrance to record license plates or vehicles that damage the gates. A camera cannot tell the difference if someone is breaking into a door or opening it with a key. A camera cannot ask for ID, unlock the pool, clubhouse or look behind obscured areas. They also cannot accept deliveries or greet you when you arrive home late and you also have to assign someone to monitor the system or to be available to look back into the recording should the need arise. Keep in mind that camera systems are an

Robert Zajic General Manager

electronic device and can suffer damage from lightning, power surges and physical abuse. These systems will also need yearly maintenance to ensure they keep working properly. However, camera systems are much less expensive than a security officer and the cost is usually a onetime payment that is not reoccurring or increase yearly. The choice of which security program you choose for your property is up to your preference and level of security your property needs. Inter State Security Corporation can provide security officers, camera systems or both to your property. OTN •39

Connie carburg: (continued from page 20) Players and coaches were constantly at her home, since Dr. Nichiolas’ office was connected to the residence, and conversations about football were continually taking place. The “learning process” for Connie was taking shape. Following graduation from high school, Carberg attended the Ohio State University. Legendary Coach Woody Hayes, seeing Connie’s love for the game, allowed her to attend every OSU practice. She was in constant “study mode”. After graduation, Connie became a secretary with the Jets. But that didn’t stop there. Her persistent enthusiasm moved her into the scouting department. Connie was the first woman to ever make a draft choice in the NFL, selecting Ohio State tight-end Mike Bartoszek in the 17th round of the 1975 draft. In 1976, Carberg was named as the first female scout in NFL history, under Mike Holovak. In 1979, with Connie’s advice and expertise, the Jets selected Mark Gastineau in the second round. At the time, Gastineau was projected as a 6th round selection. Her boss, Mike Hickey, who was at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, needed a replacement defensive lineman for the game. Connie was asked to look at films, read through the reports, make calls, and decide on a player. She performed her duties diligently, finally reaching the future 5-Time AllPro defensive star, and decided on him based on not just talent, but enthusiasm, attitude, and his willingness to be there in a heartbeat. The result— just the greatest pure pass rusher in Jets’ history. “I’m proud of having been able to make an impact on the world of sports, without trying to do so. All I ever wanted to do was serve the team I loved in the sport I loved, and I was blessed enough to do that. Breaking gender barriers was not my intention. It came with doing July 2014

what I loved”, Connie modestly said. Connie’s facelights up when the talk turns to football, whether talking about the Super Bowl Jets of 1969 with Namath, Snell Boozer, Maynard, Sauer, Herman, Lammons, and her personal favorite Bake Turner (sorry, Connie, I had to mention that), or simply a player from the University of Alabama, she always seems to know something about the circumstances surrounding the topic. Football teaches individuals how team work, trust, and athletic ability carry us through the highs and lows of growing up. Connie has taken those qualities and created a world for her family and friends that exceeds belief. Currently a book is in the works about Connie’s extraordinary life. Connie presently works for Al Hendrickson Toyota in Coconut Creek, but when camp opens for the NFL in July, Connie will be in attendance for two weeks as part of the Jets’ family, just as she has for past years. Her fantastic journey has been a positive, inspirational, and wonderful ride. Carberg has stories and tales about the game she loves that could not only fill a book, but an entire library. She’s a warm-hearted, giving, and knowledgeable person that knows so much more than football. For additional information on Connie, or to get a glimpse into her life, visit www.conniescouts.com. She knows people, and what it takes to put a smile on their face — just ask Mark Gastineau! OTN •41

Do you know what the best nutrition is for your cats?

C

ats are mysterious, stealth, exotic creatures with very different genetics than any other creature on earth. These unique animals are hunters, an obligate carnivore that require a supply of fresh meat and fish to maintain optimal health. Our domestic cats are descendents of African wildcats. All of us know that all animals have very specific nutritional requirements for different body functions. These nutrients are normally available when they eat a species appropriate diet. As descendents of a desert animal, cats require food as their source for dietary hydration. Nowhere in nature do you find any creature eating a processed food that has artificial colors and flavors to make it palatable. Nowhere in nature will you find foods that require added vitamins and minerals in order to make the animal stronger or healthier. As you peruse the pet food aisle in your local supermarket or pet food store, you rarely see a food that meets the nutritional requirements that our cats need. You will see fancy packages of dry kibble with pictures of everything from mountain lions to Persian cats along with images of fresh ingredients such as fish, chicken breast, eggs and vegetables. When you open that package, do you see or smell that fresh meat and fish? Why does an obligate carnivore need vegetables? Where in nature do cats eat vegetables or dry, highly processed cooked food? 42 •OTN

You will also find a plethora of canned and pouch foods that, while providing the moisture and hydration requirements, are still highly processed, cooked and full of fillers. These processed foods also contain a long list of chemical vitamins, minerals, colors, flavors, preservatives as well as processing chemicals. Many of these products are labeled “natural and appropriate” as well as complete and balanced. Are any of these ingredients truly natural as they should be if found in nature? Where would you find a natural “flavor plant” or “vitamin tree”? Do felines stalk, kill and eat wheat or corn plants? I am being facetious here. The following is actually content from a top veterinary brand label; “Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Pork Fat, Powdered Cellulose, Pea Bran Meal, Dried Egg Product, Wheat Gluten, Dried Beet Pulp, Chicken Liver Flavor”. Do these ingredients sound like carnivore appropriate foods? Our feline friends suffer from many health challenges when fed an inappropriate diet such as urinary infections, crystals and bladder stones, diabetes, cancers, irritable bowel, skin and dental issues, as well as allergies and skin problems. In a truly wild state these health

challenges are unheard of. Research and scientific studies confirm not only that improper nutrition contributes to all of these conditions, but that also switching to a biologically appropriate diet provides the cures. Our cats, being desert creatures, should never be given a dry kibble diet. Their food always needs to be wet. As an obligate carnivore, it must acquire animal proteins and fats from fish, meat, poultry and eggs. It should never be left out as free choice but fed as a meal and removed when they are done, similar to what they would do in nature. The foods also need to be rotated with different varieties daily to provide the natural balances of a dynamic being. Bill Piechocki, nutritionist and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM are partners in Fiesta Pet Deli in Pompano Beach, FL and co-hosts of the PetHealthCafe.com radio show. Our 40 years in the animal field has provided us unparallel vision and information which we pass to our clients on a daily basis. We can be reached at www.PetHealthCafe.com or 800-940-7387. Brains, Talent& a 97 MPH Fastball

S

Danny“Touki” Toussaint

tanding 6’2” tall and weighing 195 pounds, with a “fast ball-breaking ball” combination that buckles batters’ knees, and a talent, as well as the bat, to play the outfield, Coral Springs Christian Academy pitcher Touki Toussaint loomed as a high draft choice in the 2014 Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. The multi-talented player was projected as a first-round pick by Baseball America, and that’s exactly what transpired. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Toussaint as the 16th selection in the first round— although attending Vanderbilt University, majoring in Sports Medicine, is also on the radar. If the young hurler doesn’t sign with the D’Backs, he won’t be eligible for the draft again until after his junior season. Toussaint comes from a family that values education, and envisioning this young man passing on Arizona and entering college, is definitely within the realm of possibility. As a Junior in 2013, Toussaint was a MaxPreps All American posting a 6-2 record, with a 0.78 ERA and 83 strikeouts. He also hit .458 with 6 home runs and 32 RBI’s. For these accomplishments, Touki was awarded with the Sun-Sentinel’s Class 5A-4A-3A-2A Player of the Year honor. He topped that performance this season by going 8-2, with a 1.22 ERA and 104 K’s, and was named as a first-team All-County selection. He allowed only 30 hits all year, and walked 27 batters. MLB scouts have been drooling over this young man for the past two seasons, and the D’Backs turned out to be the winners in the “Toussaint Sweepstakes”! Surrounded by his mother, grandmother, coaches, countless friends and well-wishers, Toussaint emerged from the confines of a secluded room during the selection process, as the 16th overall pick in the draft. Now, this talented young athlete has choices to make that will determine, and mold, his future. With the guidance and direction of the wonderful people around him, Toussaint’s talents, and demeanor, will undoubtedly carry him to the next step in his remarkable life—BW July 2014

Every Child Deserves a Great Education!

Just because the local public school in your neighborhood may be under performing, doesn’t mean you don’t have other choices for your child. Education research has suggested repeatedly that the number one indicator in a child’s academic success is the presence and involvement of the parent. Positive outcomes take place when families have choices in education for their children. Access to diverse school environments and programs empowers parents to become managers of their children’s education. While charter school students enrolled just 3 percent of all public school students in 2008, the number of students (and schools) has risen dramatically in the past decade. In 1999, there were 1,542 charter schools with 349,642 students. By 2008, there were 4,618 charter schools with 1,407,817 students (National Alliance for Public Charter Schools 2009). Providing high quality school choice options allows parents to compare and then select the best learning environment for their children.

MULTI-TARGET DEVICE FIGHTS ACHES AND PAINS By Dr. Craig Kuhlmeier

B

attling against aches and pains is “mission possible” for the M6 Robotic Class IV Laser. The unit is a totally robotized, multi-targeted device, used to treat patients suffering from numerous pathologies affecting a wide area, or localized areas, allowing for automatic applications. The laser works by employing two synchronized wavelengths of light, which transfers energy to damaged tissues at the cellular level. That light triggers metabolic reactions in the cell that stimulates healing, and reduces pain and inflammation. To be able to decrease the

46 •OTN

inflammation pathway and the swelling on a cellular level, it makes sense to decrease pain. High-intensity lasers have a photochemical effect that triggers the lymphatic system: substantially reducing swelling, inflammation, and pain. They have an analgesic effect on nerve endings. Analgesic simply means the reduction of pain. The laser amplifies pain relief. It’s high-intensity slightly, but comfortably, raises the temperature of deep tissues, micro-circulation increases and tissues receive nuch needed oxygen, water, and nutrients that facilitate healing. Micro-circulation refers to the blood supply of a small, defined area. The M6 Robotic Laser increases blood circulation wherever we use it, such as in the knee compartment. It is one way we help rehydrate the ligaments and meniscus. This reduces pain in the area, and speeds recovery of the damaged cells. Tendon and ligament injuries, herniated and bulging discs, sciatica, degenerative discs and joint conditions, neurological pain conditions, pre and post-surgical treatments, and much more are effectively treated by the M6 Robotic Laser. When a physical condition, or injury, affects mobility, or quality of life, there is one goal ….. a rapid return to every-day activities. Its use is cleared by the FDA and proven successful, as evidenced by extensive, credible studies conducted in our country’s finest institutions, including Harvard University. Dr. Craig Kuhlmeier & Dr. Aliyah Stotter D.C. are the owners of Coral Springs Spine & Nerve, located at 9720 West Sample Road in Coral Springs. miami marlins

THIS FISH STORY IS “REAL” By Brian Weidenbacher

N

o team will ever grow great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined. The 2014 Miami Marlins are certainly headed in that direction. As of this writing, the Marlins have a record of 34-30, sitting just a half-game out of first place in the National League East, behind the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals. Last season, at this point (June 11), the “fish” were swimming upstream against a strong current, flopping around with a 19-45 record. Manager Mike Redmond realizes that he may have something special with this year’s version of the Marlins, and fully comprehends that the dog days of summer will be here shortly, and the team needs to continue playing the game like they have all season. After losing the ace of their staff, Jose Fernandez, Redmond had to modify the pitching rotation. Theresults— great pitching, to go along with timely hitting, providing the team with a spark that’s creating quite a buzz in the organization, and with the fans. When you go to Marlins Park now, you’re not just going to a game, you’re “living an experience”! As expected, Giancarlo Stanton is having an MVP season. Tied for the National League lead in home runs with 17, a league-leading 53 RBI’s, and a batting

July 2014

average of .300, the 24 year-old slugging outfielder continues to lead his team offensively. His tape measure home runs, and timely hitting, are the things legends are made of. Not to be outdone, Casey McGehee is ripping the ball at a .306 clip, and leads the team with 75 hits, including 14 doubles. Additionally, first baseman Garrett Jones is hitting a solid .275, center fielder Marcel Ozuna is swinging at a .265 clip, and left fielder Christian Yelich, coming off a four-hit four RBI night against Texas, is slapping the ball all over at a .259 average. It doesn’t take a baseball genius to appreciate the fact that this is an entirely different team than last year’s product. Steve Cishek (4-2), coming out of the bullpen as the main closer, has 15 saves out of 16 opportunities. Working 25.2 innings, he’s struck out 32 opposing batters, while only giving up 20 hits. His ERA is 2.45, and enemy hitters are only batting .213 against this hard throwing 6’-6” righthander. A.J. Ramos is still undefeated at 3-0, having struck out 34 batters in a little over 27 innings. His ERA is 2.93, while only giving up 20 hits. Henderson Alvarez is sporting a 3-3 record in 81 innings pitched, and his 2.36 ERA is leading the staff.

There is definitely nothing boring about watching this Marlin team play. Every game is packed with excitement and action. Whether it’s Stanton drilling a “walk-off” home run, or Cishek striking out the potential tying run, this Miami team keeps fans coming back for more. This 2014 edition of the Marlins is a plethora of different talents, molded into a very solid team. Redmond, along with his talented staff of coaches, has done an excellent job shaping this unit into a winning team. Baseball fans can appreciate this group of gifted athletes, and the effort put forth through the first part of this season. Their winning record is a direct reflection on the organization, coaching staff, and most of all, the players themselves.Confidence is high on all levels, and the rest of the season is there for the taking. Something tells me that this team will not just settle for a winning record. To steal a line from The Rock, “Can you smeeeelllllll what the Marlins are cooking”? The sweet aroma of wins is certainly permeating the air in the NL East, and is definitely being smelled by the other teams. They know the Fish are coming, and they don’t own a boat big enough to land them!

SAFETY TIPS for YOUR FAMILY: 1) Take ammunition out of the gun 2) Lock the gun and keep it out of reach of kids. Hiding the gun is not enough. 3) Lock ammunition and store it apart from the gun 4) Store the lock box or safe for the gun and the ammunition in a different area from where you store household keys. Keep out of reach of children. 5) When handing or cleaning a gun, adults should never leave the gun unattended.

douglas football

eagles earn their wings

C

oach Willis Mays’ 2014 version of the Douglas Eagles can be beaten only one way — if they give up. And, trust me, that won’t happen! These Eagles want to be the best, and whatever it takes, they’re prepared to pay that price. They will either find a way to succeed, or make one. Just like last year’s team, a rigorous off-season weight program was carried out, and when these maroon and silver clad warriors run onto the field, a tougher and better Douglas team will represent the school. Six starters from a well-balanced offense are back. The entire backfield returns from last season, led by quarterback Brett Israel. Khalil Herbert, Nick Aiello, and Damani Phillips return to provide an abundance of talent to the running game. Daniel Crescitielli is another stud likely to see considerable action in the backfield and at linebacker. Wide receiver Tate Lahito is a solid player that doubles at strong safety. Billy Sadar, Ralique Wilson, and Greg Lehr (a young man that also sports a 5.1 GPA) will also be on the receiving end of

62 •OTN

Israel’s passes. The offensive line will have Joe Durante, and new-comer Corey Gaynor as anchors. These young men should produce gaping holes for the talented running backs, and form a solid wall to protect Israel in passing downs. The Eagles will come out in a fast-paced multiple offensive scheme that will certainly keep opposing defenses guessing. This powerful Eagles offense averaged 35 points, and 21 first downs a game last season. Coach Mays’ face lights up when he speaks about this group. He knows his offense will be hard to contain this year. Defensively, the Eagles return 6 starters, as well. Some players on the offensive side of the ball will also contribute defensively. The 2014 edition will run a basic “4-3”, with multiple coverages. Strength and quickness will be the trademark of this unit. Free- safety Melvin Derico, strong-safety Landyn Rivadeneria, Ralique Wilson, and Josh

Paulson will provide adequate coverage in the secondary. Nose tackle Nicholas Chirino anchors the defensive line, along with Leombruno, George, Durante, and Sadar. An improvement in both the offensive and defensive units is needed, and Coach May feels he has the players to fulfill these holes. A formidable schedule lies ahead for Coach May and the Eagles. Last season, Douglas lost by three to Coral Springs, by five to Taravella, and by one (in overtime) to Monarch. Wins in these three games would have given Douglas an 8-2 record, instead of 5-5, and a play-off birth. This group of Eagles will learn from their past mistakes, as well as last year’s hard fought victories, and produce a tougher, more aggressive Douglas football team. Enthusiasm, dedication, talent, and above all, HEART, will propel this group of fine young men to another level. Coach May, his staff, and his team, will not be satisified until set goals are reached. Knowing Coach May like I do, these goals are attainable and WILL be reached. “Midnight Madness”, a new tradition started last season, will be held on August 3rd. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Eagles —last season they knocked on the door. This season they’re prepared to kick it down!

The 3 most important factors in choosing an agent How many Real Estate agents do you have to choose from? The term “a dime a dozen” comes to mind, doesn’t it? The truth is, yes, there are a ton of Realtors available at your disposal. There may not be many however who can provide all you need to obtain your buying or selling goals. Protect yourself and take these three factors into account when selecting your next Realtor.

1)

Honesty & Ethics There may be no more important factor then that of honesty and ethics when choosing a Realtor. Working with an agent with low ethics or one that you cannot trust to be 100% honest throughout the process is a recipe for disaster. It is imperative that you work with an agent with strong ethics and an inherent character of honesty. Many agents will skew the truth to obtain business. I’ve seen some go as far as to pose with someone else’s wife and children to give the impression of a “family based” agent. I can’t imagine how this person would react when asked about their wife and kids. Starting a business relationship based on misleading advertising is a surefire way to create future issues during the transaction. If you’re not working 66 •OTN

with an agent who is 100% honest and ethical, how can you truly be sure you have obtained an agent with your best interests at heart?

2)

Advertising & Marketing When selling your home it is crucial that you work with an agent whom firmly understands the importance of advertising and marketing. While the MLS alone can drive sales, having an agent who knows how to implement an advertising campaign personalized for your home is essential. Many agents will tout the campaigns offered by their firm and most will count on this marketing alone as the only means to promote your property. In these scenarios the home never receives any true personalized campaigns, and simply obtains “cookie cutter” marketing. Selling at a high dollar in a short period of time requires constant promotion in new and unique ways; and more importantly personalized to the subject property. When interviewing or searching for an agent to sell your home, be sure you delve into their own personal marketing strategy, find out what they as an agent bring to you, the client.

3)

Knowledge of your area Selling a product that you are unfamiliar with is a fool’s errand. I’ve seen time and again agents with listings in areas they have zero knowledge of. Without a firm understanding of the locale you are selling in, there is absolutely no way to obtain top dollar for the inventory you hold. When selling, be sure that your agent is well versed in the area you reside in. Knowledge of your area’s schools, shopping, entertainment, etc are crucial. The convenience an area provides can often add value to a buyer’s perception of the home, in turn, netting you a higher sales price. These 3 simple factors will help you decide which agent is the right fit for you. The wrong partnership is a disservice to the entire process; be sure to conduct your own personal research prior to hiring your next Realtor. When you find the right fit it just may be a match made in heaven, brining along with it an attractive sales price in a short amount of time. July 2014
