1) What: a trust is a legal document that transfers property during or after a person’s lifetime for the benefit of someone. For the most part, there are 2 types of trusts: A Revocable and a Non-Revocable. A revocable trust can be changed or altered at any time by the creator or creators of the trust during his or her lifetime, while a nonrevocable trust can only be changed in certain, rare circumstances.

Since my last article, people have been calling my office and inquiring on what a trust is and its potential benefits. As a result, I have decided to focus this month’s article on answering, what I like to call, the 5 W’s of a trust.

3) Why: a trust can automatically transfer property without the use of a will or the need to go to court. Additionally, the use of a trust is usually faster than that of a normal will in transferring property and title as well as it helps avoid the lengthy process of probate in courts. A trust also has the following benefits: it secures your property for the benefit of your beneficiaries, it protects the property from claims from creditors while in the trust, and it also ensures your privacy (as a trust does not become a public record like a will does). Some trusts may even better your tax status with certain trusts if you fall above the taxable exemption. 4) Where: a trust can dispose of property anywhere, so long as the local law of where the property is located is followed and the property is properly titled in the name of the trust. 5) When: a trust can be created today with the help of our attorneys. A trust is a very important document for the preservation of your property in the event of death or incapacitation. Our unemployment rate has plunged to 5.2%, which is our lowest level in over 5 years and which is also lower than our neighboring counties, the state, and the nation. Get ready to renew a great Fort Lauderdale tradition! On Saturday, March 8th, the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival marches into downtown to celebrate all things Irish! The excitement begins at 11 am with a traditional Irish Blessing at Huizenga Plaza in Bubier Park (Las Olas Boulevard and Andrews Avenue), followed by the 3rd Annual Leprechaun Leap Family Fun Run! The Parade begins at Noon along Las Olas Boulevard and will feature decorative floats, pipe and drum corps, classic automobiles, bagpipers, marching bands, Irish dancers, street performers, scout troops, local sports teams, Veterans groups, and so much more. Following the parade, stick around for the best Irish celebration in town at the St. Patrick’s Festival, which runs until 7:00 pm at Huizenga Plaza and along the Riverwalk. Highlights will include live performances by Celtic Bridge, the Joe Dougherty Band, the Fineans, Avalon, Bohola, the Aranmore Academy of Irish Dance, and more! One of the main reasons we brought the St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival back in 2010 was to provide downtown businesses with an added economic boost. Working to Make Oakland Park a ‘Pretty City’

uring a series of budget and strategic planning meetings over the past year, our City Commission developed several initiatives driven in large part by the input from Oakland Park residents and business owners. One of the points of emphasis was focusing on our beautification efforts to make Oakland Park a more attractive place to live, work and play. This “pretty city” concept was the impetus for the City’s Proud Oakland Park (POP) initiative and thanks to our engaged and inspired residents and business community, we are seeing dramatic results. One of our first activities was “Make a Difference Day”, where more than 70 City volunteers participated in nearly 200 hours of service. According to Hands on Broward, Oakland Park was the only municipality in Broward County to conduct a citywide Make a Difference Day event. The projects included painting, picking up litter, tree planting and helping some of our most needy residents with home repairs and landscaping assistance. In addition to our Community Volunteers Corps members, we received outstanding participation and support from the students at Northeast High School and the Home Depot. Our volunteers also came out in

force for the recent cleanup event at our City’s Lakeside Sand Pine Preserve. Our City staff provided volunteers with water, tools and directions to help maintain this nature preserve recently awarded the 2013 Florida Municipal Achievement Award in the category of “Florida’s Natural History: Your Parks and More.” Oakland Park welcomes volunteers for a couple of upcoming events that complement our POP initiative. Volunteers will assist staff at the free tree giveaway we are holding for Oakland Park residents on Saturday, February 22 at the Wimberly Field Athletic Complex, 4000 NE 3 Avenue. City residents can choose from six species of native trees in three-gallon containers for convenient transport and planting. Native trees have better wildlife attracting values when compared with exotic species. When planted in their native environment, these trees will be easier to care for with less need for fertilizer, pesticides and water. The Marine Industries of South Florida has once again selected the City’s J. Dewey Hawkins Landing

Boat Ramp/Canoe & Kayak Launch as one of the volunteer collection sites for the 37th Annual Waterway Cleanup on Saturday, March 1. This year’s event will begin at 8 a.m. at our boat ramp at 2900 NE 12th Terrace (just south of Oakland Park Boulevard). Take the family out for a canoe or kayak trip in our local waterways and collect unwanted debris during this countywide effort. Volunteers can help clean the shores of waterway parks “where blue meets green.” The Waterway Cleanup is one of Broward County’s largest environmental events. In 2013, volunteers by land and boats successfully removed 18.6 tons of trash and debris from local waterways, rivers, canals and shorelines. Help clean our Oakland Park waterways and improve wildlife habitats while enjoying a wonderful day outdoors. Meet new friends who share your interest in the local environment and give your children the gift of nature. Leadership North Broward Program Looking For Applicants

Get Your Green On! Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival Marches into Downtown on March 8th

et ready to paint the town green! On Saturday, March 8th, the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival returns to the streets of downtown featuring fun and excitement for the entire family! Presented by Jameson Irish Whiskey, the free St. Patrick›s Parade & Festival has quickly grown into one of Fort Lauderdale›s largest and most anticipated events, attracting thousands of spectators for a one-of-a-kind celebration of all things Irish. This year›s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, highlighted by a colorful parade, live music, great food, and outstanding entertainment. The pageantry and excitement will begin on Saturday morning at 11:00 am with a traditional Irish Blessing at Huizenga Plaza, located at Las Olas Boulevard and Andrews Avenue. Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. «Jack» Seiler will deliver opening remarks, which will be followed by the running of the 3rd Annual Leprechaun Leap, a family fun run featuring parents and children clad in green racing down Las Olas Boulevard to kick off the festivities. At noon, all eyes will turn toward the corner of Las Olas Boulevard and S.E. 5th Avenue for the kickoff of the largest St. Patrick’s Parade in South Florida. This year more than 100 colorful parade entries will travel west along Las Olas Boulevard through the heart of downtown and finish at Las Olas Riverfront. Highlights will include decorative floats, pipe and drum corps, classic automobiles, bagpipers, marching bands, Irish dancers, street performers, scout troops, local sports teams, Veterans groups, and elected officials. Following the parade, the St. Patrick›s Festival will continue until 7:00 pm at Huizenga Plaza and along the Riverwalk. The festivities will culminate when Mayor Seiler takes to the street with a paint roller in hand to lay down a green stripe on Las Olas Boulevard. 24th Annual ‘Walk For The Animals’ supports the Humane Society of Broward County By Nicol Jenkins

Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the 1.25mile walk will begin at 10 a.m. Honorary Chairs for the Walk include Jacey Birch of WPLG Local 10 News and U-Turn Laverne from 99.9 Kiss Country. You don’t need a dog to join in the fun! The walk is a fabulous way to meet fellow animal lovers, all while raising money for a great cause. There will be

a bounce house and face painting for the younger crowd. Dogs can receive the star treatment with doggie massages, red carpet photos, and a dip in the doggie pools; all while their owners enjoy free pancakes from IHOP and live entertainment from the Thunderhead band. Participants can also visit sponsor booths and pick up fun items.

Trinity is a 7th grader home-schooled by her parents and has passionately danced for 10 years. These two sisters have come together hoping to give a helping hand to Susan G. Komen as we all fight against breast cancer. “Family and friends of the Segredo’s continually support breast cancer awareness. They have both donated to Locks of Love multiple times before when they were younger. Locks of Love is a non-profit Charity that accepts donations of human hair and money with the stated intention of making wigs for

needy children with medical conditions that have caused them to lose their hair. Organizations, like Locks of Love, create a sense of normalcy in the hectic lives of these children. Independently becoming involved, Sabrina and Trinity have always supported the fight against breast cancer. Tessanne will perform her new single “Tumbling Down” to encourage attendees to replace poor families’ dilapidated huts in Ganthier, Haiti, with safe, permanent houses. Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief, assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills, training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 95 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor. Tessanne is proud to perform at such a worthwhile fundraiser. The barefoot children that emerged from the crudely built huts were covered in dust and malnourished. “It is the worst situation I have seen,” said Venditti, a Building Hope Gala committee member, “The houses are made of little sticks and mud, with thatched roofs. These families are just trying to survive.” This event will help bring shelter to these families. Jason Martinez, co-anchor for WPLG-TV ABC Local 10 Morning News and Local 10 News at Noon, will serve as the gala’s master of ceremonies for a second consecutive year. The evening also features an extensive silent auction, cocktail reception, gourmet dinner and dancing. ife insurance is probably the most important insurance policy you will ever purchase. It is important to know what types of policies are out there and what the benefits are for each. More and more people are now living longer and outliving their life insurance. There are three types of life insurance: Whole Life, Universal Life and Term Life. Below will explain the key differences in all three so you can make the most informed decision. Term life insurance, just as the name says, is purchased to last a set amount of time or a term. Terms may be from one year to 30 years. The amount of time that the life insurance is purchased for should represent the time that an insured person feels they need that coverage. Sometimes people use the length of their home mortgage, and sometimes they think about how many years their children will depend upon them for support. Since the life insurance company only takes on liability for a set amount of time, they will offer larger premiums. Of course, longer terms will usually cost more than shorter terms. But the fact that a term exists, means that this sort of life insurance will cost less than any permanent insurance for the same face value of death benefits. Whole life insurance is the next type and is the traditional form of life insurance. It does not expire at a set term, as long as you continue to pay the premiums. The policy will last for an insured’s whole life. It can also build up a cash value that can be taken out or borrowed against. In this way, Whole life is not just insurance; but it can also become an asset. Whole life insurance is, of course, more expensive then term life for the same amount of coverage. However, in small amounts, it can be an affordable way to purchase life insurance that will settle final expenses for an older person, or a person with health issues. Finally, we have Universal life insurance. Universal life insurance is a fairly new product compared to the others and is more complicated. It is permanent life insurance, but can also have a term insurance rider. For instance, a man with three kids may want extra protection while his children are young. Then, when he anticipates that his children will not depend upon him, he may drop the extra term life, and just have the permanent life insurance. The central thing about universal life insurance is that it is also used as an investment. Policies may be tied to market rates, so any money put into the policy that is not needed to pay for the current life insurance bill could grow as an investment. This can increase the value of the policy’s cash amount, and even increase the face value or death benefit of the life insurance. It is important to have some sort of protection in place regardless of your circumstances. Making sure your family is well taken care of should be a top priority!

As We See It… Is My Pet Food Really Safe?

t seems like just yesterday that we had that massive Pet Food recall and yet recalls continue as does the controversy that surrounds pet foods. We hear customers continue to ask, “What is the best food for my pet?” Most of the recalls of foods have been on dry kibble products by the biggest brands in the world. The main problem that is cited is Salmonella. This is a bacterial contaminant that is transmitted by poor sanitation. So why is this a problem? All major brands of pet foods are owned by large food manufacturers that should have the expertise and facilities to produce a healthy product. They speak of precise formulations, quality ingredients, and freshness in packaging. We see pictures of the clean and sterile manufacturing plants that make it almost impossible for human hands to even touch the product. The FDA and the USDA always issue the same warning every time there is a Salmonella scare… wash your hands after handling, be sure the food is well cooked, etc. Most of you may not have thought of this but kibble is a baked product. It has undergone many hours of a high heat process to create the finished product. In addition, many of the ingredients are also cooked products. Chicken meal, fish meal, meat meal, etc, are all rendered products, meaning they are cooked at high temperatures then dried at high temperatures. If we are told that cooking makes Salmonella safe and dry pet food is cooked, where does the contamination come from? We need to start that investigation at the source of the ingredients. We usually associate Salmonella with meat. Dry kibble pet foods often contain less than 10% meat and then cooked well done which should kill the bacteria, which, if they are using the premium meats they imply, the kibble should be uncontaminated. Are you paying for quality that is not there? Meat meals are usually made from non-human consumption meats, which means, they may already be contaminated. Let’s also look at the flavor coatings they add to make this

un-natural kibble palatable to your pet. They are usually cooked fats and oils. Again, we see that it is cooked so it should be Salmonella free. Hmm…. And to top it off, they usually list some ingredients and a package to keep the product fresh and safe. These products are anti-bacterial. If kibble is less than 10% real meat, then what is the other 90% of this food and how can it benefit our carnivores? Given just these few questions, is it possible for dry food to NOT be contaminated? And without even touching the quality of the other food waste that goes into manufactured pet foods, there are other things to consider as well. If you can’t buy an ingredient in the food store, then it’s not a food and should be suspect. As with our diet, the best foods for our pets are fresh, local when possible, and seasonal. It should be prepared with the minimum amount of processing. In the case of our cats and dogs, this is a variety of real meats, fed as naturally as possible. Our pets’ diets, like our own, require many different foods as each food has its’ own unique list of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other nutrients to offer the body. It is time to step back and ask ourselves, is this food in my pets’ best interest or is it really only for my convenience. Preheat oven 350 degrees Spread open pie crust and brush with melted butter Sprinkle with Sugar, Brown sugar, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and Chopped nuts Using Pizza Pie cutter slice pie crust in 8ths Cut peeled granny smith apple into 8 sections Place one slice of apple onto each pie shaped crust at wide end of crust and roll so pointed end is on top Brush with melted butter Sprinkle with Sugar, Brown sugar, and Cinnamon Place on Parchment lined Cookie Sheet and Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes Apple Pie Bites are done when browned.
