Dear O’Neal Community, The opening months of the academic year have been marked by the energy and excitement of our students and the engagement and passion of our faculty. At the school’s opening Convocation, I had the pleasure of welcoming 447 students, including 109 new students and nine new faculty members to The O’Neal School. In September, we were proud to announce that our campus is now complete, including the recent construction of a greenhouse, and that we have retired our bank debt associated with the construction of our newest buildings – a milestone made possible by the generous support of donors now named the Landmark Society. Today, O’Neal is solidly grounded on the vision of the school’s founders and the generosity and support of generations of dedicated supporters. I am grateful to lead and serve O’Neal, and all of us who have the privilege to be a part of O’Neal at this time understand the responsibility we have to advance the School’s mission and ensure its bright future.

This year, Dr. Mulik oversaw every step of the planning, renovation of science classrooms and building of the greenhouse as part of the Science Initiative from last year’s annual auction. He is also leading the SAIS reaccreditation process, self-study, and more in advance of the site visit in April of 2016. Dr. Mulik comes to O’Neal having worked in independent schools and in higher education. He is passionate about teaching computer science and experienced in running IT systems. He has a bachelors degree in engineering and computer engineering from Mumbai University and a masters degree and Ph.D. in computer science from Temple University.

’Neal has experienced positive changes in leadership.

A new head of school, a new middle school director and most recently a new assistant head of school was named.

Head of School, John Elmore, brings a wealth of experience in independent education and served as assistant head of school at O’Neal. He has worked as a teacher, college counselor and administrator for independent schools in Midland, Texas; Grosse Pointe, Michigan; and New York City. Most recently, before joining O’Neal in 2013, Mr. Elmore served as head of upper school and director of studies at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Conn., a school of more than 700 students. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grinnell College in Iowa and a master’s degree in religion and ethics from Yale University.

More leadership changes are expected for the 2015/2016 school year.

Richard Catania, upper school director, has announced his retirement at the end of this school year. Steve Dahl has announced his resignation as athletic director at the end of this school year. He will continue to coach and teach physical education classes for the School.

David Williamson has been named middle school director.

A national search was conducted narrowing the field to three finalists. Mr. Williamson was the overwhelming choice among all of O’Neal’s constituents. In 2009, he joined O’Neal as a Middle School science teacher and coach. During his tenure Mr. Williamson re-introduced the Science Olympiad program as well as coordinated international trips for students to Costa Rica, Belize, and the Galapagos Islands​. Mr. Williamson graduated cum laude from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, with degrees in environmental science and computer science and has completed his masters degree at UNC-Pembroke. He worked as a naturalist in environmental education and was a program director in youth camps for a number of years.

Candidates for both positions are currently being interviewed.

Dr. Jaiwant Mulik joined O’Neal last year as director of information technology. In addition to that role, he recently has been named assistant head of school.

wenty - one years of age and just married, Jan Simmons joined O’Neal as the first full-time secretary at O’Neal in 1974. “Mrs. Simmons sounded too much like my motherin-law, so I asked the students to call me ‘Jan’,” she reflects.

Forty years later, O’Neal was privileged to hold a dedication ceremony for Jan’s service to the School. Head of School John Elmore remarked, “Let me dispel a major myth of independent schools – heads of school like me, including division directors, like Dave Williamson, can be academics, leaders and a lot of other things, but it is people like Jan who run the place and give it meaning and life. When I was named Head and when ‘Mr. Will’ became Middle School Director nothing meant more to me than hearing Jan’s approval. Imagine how she makes the children feel?”

When interviewed earlier, Jan was asked how she has dealt with the changes in process & procedure, educational methods, technology and more over the years. Jan states, “I remember when computers were starting to be integrated in the workplace.

I had a Selectric typewriter that I loved. When the computer replaced it, they took that typewriter from me kicking and screaming.” In a small school environment, a slim staff played multiple roles. “I remember taking tuition payments for the bookkeeper who was called out to drive the bus,” says Jan. “As the School has grown, I have grown with it.”

Middle School Director Dave Williamson remarked, “As computers and mobile devices have surfaced with ‘Ask Jeevs’ and then ‘Siri’ and now ‘Cortana’, the next virtual assistant to join the market needs to be called ‘Jan’. She provides a sense of stability in the Middle School and her absence on any given day renders heightened worrisome voices from students and teachers alike.”

When asked why she had decided to work at O’Neal for so many years, Jan remarked, “The students keep me young. I love the teachers and the students…I love O’Neal.”

A red flowering dogwood was planted at the Middle School with a plaque that reads: Jan Simmons “The Heart and Soul of the Middle School” This Red Flowering Dogwood Tree was planted to celebrate Jan Simmons for 40 years of service to The O’Neal School. Jan has provided love, words of wisdom, and kindness to well over 1,200 of our middle school students and our entire O’Neal community.

’Neal Junior, John Anderson, has always firmly portrayed his own identity among colleagues as an academic, an entrepreneur, artist and explorer. He and his brother make their daily trip from Cheraw, South Carolina to attend O’Neal. To say that education is important would be an understatement in his family. Like many families at O’Neal, education is important enough to commute, but their journey is probably the longest.

John’s pottery and drawings have frequented the O’Neal auction floor on many occasions. He, with help from his brother, Harvey, has a vibrant business of selling eggs produced from his chickens. In fact, he supplies many O’Neal faculty members with his product. Such revenue has afforded him the opportunity to explore places around the globe and when the opportunity arose to spend a year abroad, John took the challenge when he was awarded The Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (KL YES) Abroad Scholarship. KL YES is a program that is fully funded by the U.S. Department of State, and is administered by the YES Consortium, led by American Councils for International Education in partnership with AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS), the American-Mideast Educational and Training Service (AMIDEAST), and the International Education and Resource Network (iEARN).

John was one of 65 finalists from a pool of 120 semifinalists across the nation. The final selection was extremely competitive involving personal interviews and evaluations in Washington, D.C. The finalists were sent to 10 different countries. John was one of 5 assigned to South Africa.

After an orientation in New York and brief stay in Johannesburg and then to George, South Africa, John arrived in Mossel Bay on September 24, 2013. Shark capital of the world, Mossel Bay is accessible to the ocean, the flatlands, the rain forest, as well as the mountains.

Geographically speaking, it was the best of all worlds.

Though John never saw a shark, he did see whales.

The purpose of the program is to send American youth to predominantly Muslim countries to engage in activities to learn about the host country’s society and values while helping to educate others about American society and values in order to break down the American stereotype.

While at a young age, a learning exchange of cultures helps to grow understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and ways of living.

His host family consisted of a 64-year-old woman who lived by herself. She worked from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day. The house was not located in the best of neighborhoods. “We ate the same food for supper, every night,” exclaimed John.

In South Africa there are three races – white, colored and black. There are eleven national languages, English, Africaans (similar to Dutch) and nine tribal languages.

to stick it out at the same school for the rest of his time there. English and Africaans were the two main languages of the house. John had two host brothers, who were 19 and 20. They attended college, but they came home frequently during school holidays. In addition to hiking, camping, and gardening, John’s host grandmother took him on numerous excursions covering the southern part of the Western Cape.

As a part of Scouts, he had a chance to earn several merit badges as well as participate in the Patrol Leader Training Unit (PLTU), a training course in Cape Town. Part of the training included being woken up at 4:30 a.m., blindfolded and driven to the top of a mountain, where it took the scouts all day to hike down the mountain – finding their own way. The Scouts of South Africa include both boys and girls. English was spoken involving scout activities, but there was one girl who spoke Xhosa, and little English.

Because John had picked up some of the Xhosa language, he helped her with translation during Scout activities. “If you have accomplished the goal of changing the perception of at least one person, you’ve done your job, and I feel that I’ve done that” states John.

The blacks spoke the tribal languages and the one spoken most often in Mossel Bay was Xhosa, a clicking language. The whites spoke English or Africaans and the colored spoke Africaans.

John attended the Hillcrest School where out of 1100 students he was one of 5 white students. There were also 5 white teachers. The enrollment was 60% colored and 40% black. “In the classrooms, we were supposed to speak English, but that wasn’t always the case,” says John. “The Xhosa language was used a lot.” School started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 2:00 p.m.. There were two 30-minute breaks in the day. Each classroom had a light bulb hanging from the ceiling. “The building was not clean, the school had a low level of educational standards, computers were only located in the administrative offices,” says John. “This year, I have a lot of academic catching up to do.” As an opportunist, while he was there, John did make an effort to learn the Xhosa language.

John left Mossel Bay on July 10, 2014. He stopped over in Washington, D.C. to make a presentation for the Department of State. He since has been asked to participate on a committee to review the KL YES program to offer up improvements for the future.

As for future travels, John plans for a trip over spring break. When John was applying for the KL YES scholarship, his father told him that if he won the scholarship, he would buy him an airline ticket to anywhere he wanted to go. John is holding him to his word.

Since there were no extracurricular activities happening with his current host family, John decided to seek out Scouts. An active member of Scouts in the States, it was an activity he was familiar with and it gave an opportunity to get to know others. He developed a close camaraderie with his scout leader, Pat Farnhan, who, after John was mugged twice outside of his host family home, took John in to be hosted by his wife and family for the rest of his stay.

t is only a coincidence that O’Neal has eleven of its faculty and staff who happen to be women who played a sport in college. Yet, it is worth sharing.

She ran the 1200 meter for the distance medley relay that won the Southern Conference Championship Indoors of 2001.

Mrs. Weeks made top five finishes in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs at conference meets in 2000. In 1999, she was awarded all conference honors for cross country.

Cindi Carr has recently celebrated thirty years of teaching at O’Neal. A biology teacher in the Upper School and Key Club advisor to many, her college days included being a founding member of the swim team for The University of Wisconsin.

Another “founding” team member, is O’Neal’s librarian, Lynn Bowness. She was part of the first women’s lacrosse team at Kenyon College, Ohio.

Director of Physical Education and Varsity Volleyball Coach, Kendall Harper, attended University of South Carolina – Upstate on scholarship for volleyball. She finished a 4-year career with 732 kills, 141 assists, 88 aces, 831 digs, and 309 blocks. Mrs. Harper ranks top ten in school history in kills, kill attempts, aces and digs. Other accolades include: USC Upstate Female Athlete of the Year, 2 NCAA tournament appearances, nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year, All Conference, team captain, Presidential Honor Roll and Dean’s List student all four years.

Woody Wilder, Upper School history teacher, Model United Nations advisor and Challenge 20/20 advisor, played tennis at Washington and Lee. Director of Admissions, Alice Droppers, played tennis at University of Minnesota until she transferred to Hope College, Michigan. At Hope she was number one in singles and doubles as well as team captain. Her team was undefeated in dual meets to win Hope’s first MIAA Women’s Championship & Michigan AIAW Div III Champs 1978. Mrs. Droppers went on to coach the tennis team in 1980.

Upper School Math Teacher, Laura Bullock, attended the University of Arkansas on scholarship for cross country and indoor/outdoor track. She was the Southeastern Conference (SEC) scoring team member for two years in steeplechase and was a member of the SEC Championship Team for outdoor track in 2004.

Upper and Middle School Spanish Teacher, Heather Weeks, ran track and field as well as cross country and indoor track on scholarship for Appalachian State University.

Miss Brase shares her thoughts on being an athlete and what is needed to be a successful student athleteI think being a college athlete has made all the difference in preparing me for working at O’Neal. Learning how to manage my time and work with limited hours was key in college and has transitioned with me to teaching. We all have full teaching schedules filled with classes, advising clubs, and coaching sports, which make time management key. After four years of college basketball, I learned how to make every minute of a day count, especially when I have a lot to do. This continues to ring true at O’Neal whether that means grading, planning, or complete one of various tasks that are needed of a teacher. Similarly, after playing and leading a team for four years of college basketball, I learned the importance of working with others to achieve a greater goal. It is not what you can do on your own, but often how you can work with others to produce the best product (or lesson) for your students.

Middle School Science Teacher, Dr. Rebecca Thurman, attended the University of Arkansas and ran track and cross country for 2 ½ years.

Student athletes need to have perseverance, hard work ethic, and most importantly, heart. I can’t overstate the importance of the last one: heart. Everything an athlete does puts him/her outside of his/her comfort zone. Those athletes that can overcome these moments of adversity, whether that is on the court or in the classroom, will have the greatest success. As my high school coach always preached: “It is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog!”

Upper School English Teacher and Middle School Soccer Coach, Jackie Cavallini, attended the University of Iowa on scholarship for soccer. She was two-time team captain, 2007 Offensive MVP and a four-year member of the Academic All-Conference (Big Ten) team.

A student needs to be able to compete and to work hard.

Another more specific skill that is needed to be a studentathlete is the ability to manage your time. School and sports are obvious priorities, but we also need social interaction (particularly with our families) and plenty of rest. Those last two things can be overlooked when you’re dealing with team commitments and grades, but they are integral to success because they contribute to a well-rounded lifestyle. Most importantly, you always need perspective. Sports and school alone are not the end-all, be-all of our existence. When we have setbacks we need to view them as exciting lessons and remember that the time as a student and as an athlete is fleeting – it’s the way we have dealt with the struggles that defines us.

Mrs. Cavallini shares her thoughts There are so many intangible benefits of playing a sport throughout childhood, but the two most valuable lessons I learned were the importance of competition and of hard work. Competition is a great thing, not only because it inspires your best performance, but because it also forces you to be able to perform under pressure. Hard work has also been a valuable lesson for me, because there is no worth-while task that doesn’t require some level of effort.

Every day at practice or during a game there was always some level of discomfort, whether it was physical or mental, but a competitor realizes that every moment of struggle (as

Nancy Lillard Walden ’79 is a software analyst at Duke Medicine. She currently lives in Chapel Hill with her husband, Mike, and their two children Emily and John.

Quinten Van Camp ’85 is living near Hobart in Tasmania with her husband and 6 year old daughter Bailey. She has a rescue farm with 25 animals all saved from slaughter and has committed herself to a vegan lifestyle to save both animals and the planet. She works for Deloitte as manager in the Hobart office and loves her job and amazing view of the city of Hobart and its waterfront.

Michael McGowan ’09 celebrated his 24th birthday by making it through the first stage of qualifying school for the Web. com Tour where he finished tied for ninth in the 78-player field. The top 32 and ties advance to the second stage, which will be conducted next month at various sites around the country. Michael made it to the first stage by finishing fourth at a pre-qualifying tournament in California last month.

Samantha “Sam” Adorno ’03 has been promoted from director to vice president of digital marketing for the family entertainment network INSP. Adorno joined INSP in 2012 after a successful career at Discovery Communications, where she worked on brands such as Discovery, Investigation Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet. In her new position, she will play a pivotal role in constructing partnerships and initiatives that will promote INSP’s forthcoming slate of original programs and films.

Former O’Neal student Dorie Clark discussed “Reinventing You” on October 14th as part of the Ruth Pauley Lecture Series at Sandhills Community College. A former campaign strategist, Clark is marketing consultant for Google, Microsoft, Yale University, Fidelity, and the World Bank. At age 14, Clark left O’Neal to enter Mary Baldwin College’s Program for the Exceptionally Gifted. At 18, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College, and two years later received a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School.

Marci O’Donnell ‘07 and Weston Davis ’05 were married August 30, 2014 at the Gardens at Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC. Included in the wedding party were Corbin O’Donnell ‘10, Best Man Evan Davis ‘08, Maid of Honor Desire Blaauw ’07 and Faye Turini ’08.

The Robbins Scholarship The Robbins Scholarship is a four-year O’Neal Upper School scholarship awarded to a rising ninth grader, and was given in honor of Alice Robbins. Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship In recognizing Teeda and Sal Nuzzo’s strong value for a strong educational background Nuzzo family provides scholarships to four Upper School students annually. The Nuzzo Family Scholarship is given in honor of Rev. John Nicola a retired priest who taught Latin at The O’Neal School. This scholarship is not endowed.
