Dear O’Neal Community, The O’Neal School has grown and flourished beyond expectations in recent years. Alhough it is hard to remember all that was achieved before the pandemic, the recent changes in enrollment, faculty strength and programs are simply a continuation of the steady momentum O’Neal has had since the Landmark Society forever changed the trajectory of the School in 2014. Today, O’Neal has a record enrollment of 479 students; more importantly, across campus there is a tone of gratefulness and pride to be a Falcon. Our teachers, coaches and students have not only adapted, they have thrived. O’Neal is providing the normalcy and engagement that all students need while maintaining practices to keep our community safe. O’Neal has continued to move forward in several areas despite the uncertainties of the times.  Our leadership programs have been expanded to all three divisions with the Culture Council, Courage League, and Leadership Academy.  Traditions Golf Academy has launched with Nick Bradley as the director, O’Neal’s girls golf team finished second in the state, and athletic teams are now in their winter seasons.  In the arts, performances are recorded on a new, professional camera and rehearsals have begun for the musical “Schoolhouse Rock”.  The campus is being enhanced by the addition of an outdoor classroom at the Lower School called Lambie’s Meadow, honoring Lloyd Cutler, and a formal garden space at Taws Hall in honor of campus land donor Mary Elaine O’Neal.  We are thankful for the support of so many in our community who have helped O’Neal grow and prosper as we serve the children and families of the Sandhills. In September, O’Neal marks its first 50 years; we are grateful to those like Bob Haarlow, Ted Taws and the many others who played a role in founding and building the school we cherish. We will not only celebrate this milestone on Founder’s Day, but we will look forward to building on our successes and growing even stronger.   To commemorate O’Neal’s first half century, a central campus will be built between the Hannah Center and Bradshaw Hall.  This area will include spaces for teachers and students to collaborate, fields for play and a structure for gatherings and events.  It will be a centerpiece on our beautiful, complete campus and forever pay tribute to O’Neal’s first 50 years and those who sustained the vision of the School’s founders.  One person has worked tirelessly for O’Neal for the past two decades as an advocate, cheerleader and friend of the School; we are delighted to name O’Neal’s central campus in honor of Konni McMurray for all that she has done for our school. Her caring enthusiasm, volunteerism and service have benefitted not only The O’Neal School, but also the lives of so many students and families.   O’Neal is the educational leader in the region providing an exceptional community and educational experiences that change the lives of children and young adults. We are thankful for all that our teachers have done for their students during these difficult months, and we are grateful for the trust our families have placed in O’Neal.

ifty years ago, the Sandhills region of Moore County was growing, and the residents were enjoying the arrival of new businesses and families to the area. It was at this time, in the fall of 1971, that a group of families started a new school. The Wallace O’Neal Day School opened with 35 students in three grades, but quickly grew to 12 grades, and graduated its first class in 1977. As we look enthusiastically toward our 50th year of educating students, the O’Neal community looks back. We look back to reflect on what it took to get where we are today. In considering the history of the School, especially the very early years that presented so many challenges, it is imperative to recognize the importance of great leadership.

Honoring the First Headmaster Bob Haarlow

That leadership came in the form of Bob Haarlow, the first headmaster of the Wallace O’Neal Day School. A graduate of Princeton University, where he played basketball in the 1965 NCAA Final Four, Bob was a young teacher, husband, and father. He plunged into his role at O’Neal, and as a result of his influence, the School rapidly earned respect in the community as a college preparatory institution where the students felt like part of a big family.  It was Bob Haarlow, through his daily and tireless efforts, that truly built O'Neal - a school where the values of excellence, pride, character, and community were at the core.  Every effort was made to instill into each O’Neal student those values, and that is still the case today.

In terms of his legacy at The O’Neal School of today, Mr. Haarlow is a pioneer.  It was Bob Haarlow’s dedication to the School, its teachers, and most importantly to its students that shaped what O’Neal has become.  In the 1970’s and 1980’s, students were being taught academically, and they were being taught to value and respect their school, its people, and the relationships formed therein.  It is a special place now due in great part to the efforts and commitment of an extraordinary leader.  As we look toward the 50th anniversary of The O’Neal School, it is fitting to honor Bob Haarlow and thank him for his commitment to forming the foundation on which our successful school now prospers. As such, we look forward to the unveiling of a bronze bench and sculpture in Bob’s image on Founder’s Day 2021.

In his 14 years as the headmaster of O’Neal, Mr. Haarlow was a teacher, coach, counselor, father figure, you name it.  Even after all of these years, it is not hard to get alumni talking about what he meant to them.  He was a mentor, one who pushed students to go beyond what they knew, beyond their comfort zones.

"If you can make a difference in the life of one child, it is all worth it." -Ron Grinker Lloyd Ilsley Cutler

October 29, 1927 - October 28, 2019 O’Neal gives its sincere appreciation to the family of Lloyd Cutler, whose estate has gifted the School with the funding for Lambie's Meadow. Mrs. Cutler was an O’Neal grandmother and past member of the School’s Board of Trustees. Her generosity for the School extends many years of support by way of gifts and educational programs.

Lambie's Meadow

In collaboration with Master Gardener and Trustee Dr. Lynda Acker, an outdoor learning area has been designed to benefit O'Neal's students. This project captures the spirit of Mrs. Cutler’s legacy and commemorates her many contributions to O’Neal. Lambie’s Meadow will bring pride to the O’Neal community as a whole and stand as an interactive dedication to the memory of Mrs. Lloyd Cutler. In the space students will find a meandering stream for water play and exploration, mud kitchens, and a forest area for fort building, climbing and imaginative play. Open-air cabins and nature-based areas for centers and hands-on outdoor learning will be created to foster discoveries that integrate with science, math, literacy and the arts.

"To teach is to touch a life forever." James Robert Miles

August 27, 1949 - May 10, 2020 Jim Miles moved from Ypsilanti, Michigan to start teaching at O'Neal in 1972 - the second year of the School's opening. He served many roles for the 38 years he worked at the School. “He wore so many hats, but first and foremost Jimbo was a teacher in the broadest sense," says O'Neal's first headmaster Bob Haarlow. "Teaching is where Jim demonstrated his love for children. He was unmatched, just a natural at his craft.”

In celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday, Mr. Miles always dressed the part.

A good portion of his time at O’Neal was served as Lower School director, and Jim Miles saw the first building as well as its replacement constructed to house lower school students. After the construction of McMurray Hall Lower School in 2008, its atrium was dedicated to Jim in honor of his dedicated service to the School. 6

"The influence of a good teacher can never be erased." Michael Joseph Norman

October 11, 1980 - August 18, 2020 Michael Norman served as O’Neal’s Upper School Spanish and drama teacher for nearly 20 years. He had a gift of relating to students, and often served as their mentor. He carried sincere concern for students’ well-being and was always available to lend an ear and a voice of sound guidance. The students had the utmost respect for him, and they enjoyed his company. After his cancer diagnosis, he chaired the Moore County Relay for Life. Under his leadership, O’Neal students supported his efforts. They would cut one’s own beloved hair or kiss a pig for pledges. For many years, Michael led the Upper School Honor Council, and in later years, he also served as Dean of Students. His last directed play was Terrence McNally's "It's Only a Play" in the spring of 2019. It was preceded by ten other outstanding drama performances by The O'Neal Players under his direction. Michael also coached students for the English Speaking Union's Shakespeare competition, seeing some rise to the national level. Given all his strengths, his love was the theater. In Michael's presence, along with family and colleagues, O'Neal honored him by dedicating a plaque in the theater.

he onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the world to function differently. Amidst the upheaval of a well-grounded education process, many positives have surfaced. O'Neal is fortunate to offer on-campus learning. In response to mitigating the COVID threat, creative minds in education rise to the challenge to introduce new processes, programs and activities. Some of these initiatives are not only meeting the immediate needs for learning, but they are integrating processes and pedagogy for a seamless transfer to virtual learning if forced off-campus. Even more so, many of these ideas will likely remain part of the mainstream in cultivating the whole child far beyond the end point of this crisis. Enjoy reading some of the ways O’Neal has made lemonade from these lemons.

The Flipped Classroom- by Ren Callahan

Last spring, when the Coronavirus required teachers to provide remote instruction, physics teacher Ren Callahan began recording video lessons for her classes with an attached worksheet or set of problems from the book. She received a lot of positive feedback from students, who said that they liked being able to watch the videos at their own pace, pausing the video as needed to complete their notes. This led her to seriously reconsider employing a pedagogy that she first heard about while she was a TA in graduate school: flipped learning.

The Classroom

Flipped learning, or a flipped classroom, is an approach to teaching where direct instruction (i.e. lecture) is done at home and practice work (e.g. a problem set) is done in the classroom. This is where the term “flipped” comes from, as it inverts the traditional roles of “schoolwork” and “homework.” By moving direct instruction out of the classroom, classes can become less teacher-focused and more student-focused.

Rethinking the Space

It was only a short time ago that lower school classrooms were encouraged to have couches and comfy chairs to initiate flexible seating, in addition to furniture that promoted movement. This allows for students to relax, feel comfortable and facilitate their ability to focus on learning. As COVID protocols came into play, almost anything considered plush had to go, even furry classroom pets. Larger structures such as bookshelves were removed to allow more space for physical distancing. And yet flexible seating is still alive and well. The younger students use floor towels and floor desks while the whole Lower School has access to wobble rockers so that youngsters can move around during the day promoting physical health as well as physical distancing. The smooth plastic surfaces make it easy for routine disinfectant wipe downs and towels are taken home to be washed.

For Ren's classes that are flipped, she records short (less than 15 minute) videos where she narrates notes on a specific subject. She provides a note outline for her non-AP classes, which students fill out as they watch the video lesson. Students then take a picture of their notes and upload it to the assignment so that she can confirm they watched the video. Meanwhile, her class time is focused on discussing the conceptual points covered in the notes, often accompanied by a demonstration, and practicing problem solving. As the students work through the assigned problems she walks around the room and provides them with individual feedback in real-time. "This is preferable to

This is preferable to assigning problem sets for homework because, when a student is struggling, I am there to guide and help them toward the proper path. assigning problem sets for homework because, when a student is struggling, I am there to guide and help them toward the proper path," says Ren. "I can also correct any misconceptions they may have before they become ingrained through repetition." Additionally, she can gather data on what students are still struggling with, which helps her plan future lessons.

Kindergarten students use towels and floor desks in the classroom. 10

In the flipped classroom, physics students watch a video and take notes outside of class. Preparing the note outlines, then recording, and then editing the videos is not a short process, but it is a good investment in her, and her students', future. After this year, she will have a library of video lessons, with accompanying note outlines, which she will be able to use for years to come. This will also give her more time in the future to improve the in-class activities and demonstrations that partner with the video lessons. She has received positive feedback from her students about the flipped learning approach. Ren states, "I am confident that my students are developing strong self-directed learning and problemsolving skills that will stick with them for years to come."

Fifth grade takes a walk with portable devices for the Walking Classroom.

PreK Physical Education

Just this year, the PreK classes have begun to have physical education in a structured class. Pre-kindergarten students are very energetic and they get a tremendous amount of physical activity through play. However, motor skill development cannot be taught early enough and Assistant Director of Athletics Kelley Adams has taken on the challenge. Originally a way to give our PreK teachers a break from their newly structured "COVID bubbles", O'Neal's youngest students are thoroughly enjoying it. PreK PE may be here to stay.

The Walking Classroom

A national award-winning program, The Walking Classroom provides audio players for each student which are preloaded with custom-written, kid-friendly podcasts. As students take a brisk 20-minute walk, they listen to the podcast and later return to the classroom for discussion. The podcast topics include English language arts, social studies, science and more. Conducted by a team of researchers at UNC-Chapel Hill, research confirms that there is a link between exercise and cognitive function. Students are in better moods. They are more focused and are more likely to participate in discussions. Whether it be on topic or off, for her fifth and sixth grade science classes, Jenell Copeland uses The Walking Classroom if just to give a twist to the normal classroom instruction.

The Outdoor Classroom

O’Neal is not a stranger to teaching outdoors. On a pretty day, one has always been able to see a history class under the pines or independent reading on the middle school playground. Today, as an effort to mitigate the COVID virus, classes and lunches are happening outside ALL THE TIME. With social distancing, the outside allows for a mask break and a feeling of some return to normalcy. Will the outdoor classroom stop when the cold weather comes? NO! The old myth that cold weather causes sickness has been thrown out the window and is replaced with the encouragement of wearing the appropriate winter attire. Studies show that being outside in the cold can strengthen the immune system as well as burn pent up energy. Working and playing in different conditions can promote cognitive thinking and problem solving as well as boost vitamin D levels.

“Maintaining Your Momentum”. The Falcon coaches immediately began virtual workouts with their student-athletes and preparing them for athletic training sessions during the pandemic. Once a week, department meetings and subcommittee groups of coaches continued to refine ideas and visions and The O’Neal School’s “Falcon Academy” was formed. The Falcon Academy started on June 15, with teams and student-athletes being broken into groups of 8 in a strength and conditioning setting. Trainings were led by expert coaches from Sandhills Sports Performance. The Falcon Academy continued in the small group workout format until the end of July. "At the forefront of our coaches' minds was how to safely provide work-out opportunities to our student-athletes during the pandemic while empowering our student-athletes to control what they can control – their effort," says Athletic Director James Franklin. As pandemic restrictions began to lift, the Falcon Academy transitioned from two days a week sports performance only trainings, to three days a week in slightly larger groups. The training sessions continued and slowly skill sessions were added in for volleyball, soccer, tennis and cross country teams. Not knowing if there would be a fall sports season, one day each of winter and spring sports training was also incorporated.

The Falcon Academy by James Franklin, Director of Athletics and Transportation

T

he life skill of exercise is learned as a result of placing an importance on physical well-being. In turn, O'Neal's coaches have created a culture of excellence and accountability. Close to ninety percent of the student body in the Middle School and Upper School participate in athletics and benefit from their coaches' purposeful approach.

The Falcon Academy was in operation until the middle of September. At that time, the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) announced that schools/teams could participate in fall sports seasons. However, from June until the transition to the more traditional type of fall season, the Falcon Academy helped students learn their sports disciplines despite the restrictions of the pandemic. The Falcon Academy also guided student-athletes to learn more about incorporating exercise routines into their lives, with a focus on self-care. Coaches helped students set targets for themselves, concentrating on areas to improve upon in order to garner success. Coaches also created internal competitions once or twice a week, so the student-athletes were able to remember what it takes to be a top athletic program in the state of North Carolina and the Wells Fargo Cup recipient.

During the early days of North Carolina’s “stay at home” and “safer at home" orders, O'Neal's ability to offer athletics was postponed and later cancelled, and group workouts were prohibited. However, rather than completely pause or stop athletics, the coaches looked for ways to help student-athletes continue to train. After an athletic department meeting with Duke University’s Head of Olympic Sports Performance (and O’Neal Athletic Department advisor) Dan Perlmutter in early April, the coaches unanimously agreed to keep preparing and training for future athletics, not knowing when there would be a return to normal training or competition. The meeting was a call to action from Perlmutter and he deemed it,

able to take two or three exams prior to submitting applications. However, they are now able to decide for each college application if they want to send their scores or not. This option puts students in the driver’s seat. All programing normally done face to face has been converted to virtual/hybrid. Parent meetings normally held in the evenings have been transformed to webinars. College conferences for O’Neal juniors have been adapted to socially distant student/counselor meetings with parents being present via Zoom. Parents no longer need to leave their homes when they can pop in virtually and see and hear the same information. Everything has changed, and some of these changes have proven to be more efficient and may be around to stay.

College Counseling by Renee Ferrerio, Director of College Counseling

Another change to the program are visits to campus by college representatives. Over the past four years, O’Neal has had between 40-50 college representatives visit the campus to meet with students, inform them about their institution and their specific admissions process. This year, due to COVID-19, all rep visits have gone virtual. As a result, college rep visits have doubled and opened the world to our students. So far this year, 101 institutions of higher learning have visited O’Neal. Not only has this helped students to explore colleges all over the country and internationally, but also an unintended benefit is that many more colleges in the US have now learned about O’Neal and the high caliber students we nurture. In addition, new relationships have been formed between College Counselor Renee Ferrerio and college representatives across the US enabling her to recommend more schools to students during the process. All of this bodes well for O’Neal students as they embark on their exploration of good fit institutions. “I really appreciated the virtual visits," says Emma Sager. "As a sophomore starting my college search, I enjoyed being able to hear about so many different schools even with COVID. The online visits allowed me to start seeing what I want in a college, and I think that will be very helpful as I continue my college search process.”

W

hen the pandemic hit in March of 2020, things drastically changed in the world of college counseling. For the remainder of the 19/20 school year, all college counseling took place via Zoom. All student spring visits to a college campus were cancelled and all representatives who normally visit high school campuses were in limbo. Normal planning for the upcoming new school year was on hold. Everything looked dim and uncertain. But sometimes, there is a silver lining if you look closely. In a normal year, around 450-500 colleges are test optional in the country. This year, over 1600 colleges, public and private, as well as international, are now test optional, many of them making this a permanent decision. Students who were unable to find a location to take SAT/ACT exams now have the option to omit them as part of the college process. At O’Neal, SAT and ACT testing was facilitated for O’Neal students only. O’Neal’s entire class of 2021 has been
