that the shows were not just entertaining but magical, and contributed greatly to their holiday fun. Retail store items such as shopping bags and gift boxes have always been available for collectors at antiques shops and flea markets, but Macy’s closing sale opened up the rare possibility for dealers, collectors, and anyone who wanted a souvenir of Dayton’s/

Mall of St. Paul Alice in Wonderland was the theme for the Bachman’s 1999 Flower Show at Dayton’s. The gardens were filled with characters wearing costumes designed by Jack Edwards, former head costume designer for the Guthrie. Collectible Christmas Albums by Donald-Brian Johnson Baby, it’s cold outside. The weatherman predicts a winter wonderland. You know what that

means? It won’t be long before Santa Claus is comin’ to town! So get those chestnuts roasting on that open fire, and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow-because over the river and through the woods, it’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas!

HOLIDAY E OPEN HOUS DEC 1-3

And now, with that mashup of seasonal songs careening about in your brain, the time is right for a look at that most tuneful of Yuletide traditions: the Christmas album! Christmas albums first emerged in the 1940s with 78 rpm

collections from such radio favorites as Fibber McGee and Molly (their rendition of “The Night Before Christmas” featured vocals by the King’s Men, and “Molly”— Marian Jordan—as little-girl narrator “Teeny”).

Opportunity knocked, but I was busy Shoppers Dealer’s would pour into antiques Choice

by Joan Sween It was the first few days of December and business was slow in the mall. Every year the cycle was pretty much the same. For the first part of the month, people would come in in solitary visits, hoping to sell last year’s holiday finery in order to make enough money

to buy this year’s holiday fashions. Those not selling would be out in the retail stores, looking for “exactly the right present” for Uncle Fred and Aunt Helen. Come about the 15th, people would realize they had only 10 shopping days left, and the right thing had yet to make an appearance.

on Hallow-even, the first of November.” “Uh-hmm. “Do you have the whole collection with you?” asked Bernie. “May I see Samh’im?” “Certainly,” said the Norsky giant, lifting a life-like figure from his box. It was quite detailed. A red tunic came down to its knees. A long grey beard and long flowing hair descended to its waist. Over the tunic was an ermine cape with an attached hood. On its feet were soft suede boots laced as high as the knee. A leafy crown of mistletoe surrounded its head. In its left hand he carried a short golden staff surmounted by a sky blue orb and topped with a crown-like figure shaped like Stonehenge. In its right hand was a long, gnarled staff topped with a razorsharp crescent moon. A gold braided belt

circled the tunic, from which depended a thong with a calling horn. That’s quite detailed, I muttered to myself. “Gorgeous!” breathed Bernie. “Druids are reputed to be the first manifestations of the Nicolas saints,” said Helga’s salesman. As the other eleven 30-inch Santa figures came out of the boxes, I had to admit they were something special, from the rough Germanic Saint Nicholas to the velvetclad, sleigh-riding, listmaking jolly old elf of today’s fame. “How much are they?” asked Bernie. “Three hundred each,” he said. “That’s a lot of money,” she said, catching her breath. “Still, they’re nationallyknown Helga Sigurdsdotters and worth a lot.” Was she nuts? “I’ll take them,” she said.

Bing, Burl, Nat, Andy, and the rest of their caroling cohorts ease their way onto the airwaves and are once more welcome visitors. Time to roll out those old records, and celebrate the happiest of holidays. It’s beginning to look (and sound) a lot like Christmas!
