Site manager Brian Pease has a story about a Cass Gilbert sofa that used to sit in the governor’s reception room—and was similar to the one that sits there now. Two Civil War vets sat on the sofa beneath the painting that showed their regiment, the 5th Minnesota, at the battle of Corinth. Those vets were Lt. Col. Lucius Hubbard, seen in the painting on horseback, and John Ireland, regimental chaplain, the clean-shaven face breaking out of the smoke to the left.

Ceramic Arts Studio: Thoroughly Modern by Donald-Brian Johnson What do you do when the world passes you by? You catch up. The 1940s were banner years for U.S. manufacturers of decorative objects. With the onset of World War II, doors previously open to a deluge of overseas imports had clanged shut. New companies sprang up stateside, as consumers seeking a brief respite from the weariness of war brightened their homes with a variety of ceramic doodads. While most were located on the

1940s were designed with the interests of the buying public in mind. As one promo piece of the time put it, CAS specialized in “shy maids and dapper gents, dogs and cats, BoPeeps and Boy Blues.” For wartime consumers, cheery figurines like these were just the ticket. And then, the war ended. Domestic giftware manufacturers found themselves in fierce competition with overseas competitors able to deliver similar products at cheaper prices. Since few domestic designs had been copyrighted, many competing items were outright knockoffs. But imports and knockoffs weren’t the only challenges facing postwar design firms. Buyer tastes in home décor were changing. “Winsome” and “homespun” were no longer the go-to trends. Now, the focus was on

Minnesota’s BEST Rivertown Experience!

So come Monday, Stella was in Cancun, and I was in Waving Wheat with her work mate, Gloria. My first sale was a pretty cloisonné ashtray. I wrote the

sales slip, calculated the tax, wrapped the ashtray, took the money, and pushed the key on the cash register that said “taxable sale.” The cash register let out an ear-splitting screech and an ominous grinding noise. “Oh, right,” said Gloria, “I’ll bet Stella forgot to tell you our cash register is an old model. You have to push “Monday,” “10,” “tax,” “change,” and then “sale.” “Ooo-kaay,” I said, and pushed “Monday,” “10,” “tax,” “sale,” and “change.” The cash register said, “Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!” Jumped up and down several times, and then let out a fart of smoke. “I have to be home in time to make dinner for company,” our customer offered.

By Joan Sween Fine, a bit of sarcasm is just what we need right now, I thought. “Here, let me do it,” said Gloria, and poked the machine five times. It quietly slid out its drawer and smiled at her. By the time noon arrived I had managed to let Gloria ring up all the sales while I wrapped. Looking at the clock, I chirped, “Great! It’s lunch

time.” “Good! I’m starving,” said Gloria pulling out a brown bag from under the counter. “Where’s the nearest food place?” I asked. “Oh, gosh, maybe six miles south of here,” said Gloria. “Didn’t Stella tell you to be sure and bring a bag lunch?” “Um . . . . no.” “Bummer!” said Gloria. “I would share with you, but I’m trying to diet and all I have is half a chicken sandwich and a dill pickle.” A dill pickle! I loved dill pickles! “Don’t worry about it,” I said. “There’s a can of Pepsi in the frig and half a box of stale Girl Scout cookies on top of the microwave. I
