From The Gaffer

Welcome back to Deeside... A warm welcome to Aberystwyth Town who will be looking to get back on track after last week’s defeat. They are a well established team at this level and we will need to be solid to get a positive result. it’s been a great week since we were last here, with another good win at Newtown, and the reserves and U19s also seeing us get more points on the board. After the win against Llanelli we went to Newtown in high spirits, but football wise we were not at it in the 1st half, however our team ethic got us in at half time at 1-1. We cleared our heads and were 100% better in the second half and took our chances. It’s great to have 4 strikers who I know can hit the back of the net and will get me goals. Whichever two start the other two will come on and invigorate the game two a new level. it was great for Rhys Healey to score his first Welsh Premier League goal at the age of 17 and there is much more to come from him. Today will see me with a fully fit squad for the first time since we came back on 23rd June! This will increase the levels of performance as everyone in the squad will want to play in the team, so every game I am telling the team to be better than their last, I believe and trust the squad and they are rewarding me with points. Come on The Nomads! 5

Petrie (44, 58), Healey (90) Welsh Premier League 6

8th September 2012

Petrie brace and late Healey strike at Newtown sends Nomads up to 3rd An excellent second half performance saw the Nomads pick up three more points and showed their worth in the Welsh Premier League. As Llanelli started to get into the game, it became more end to end with both sides making good use of their right wingers. On several occasions, Llanelli managed to get in behind the Nomads defence and though both sides were having chances, neither keeper was really threatened. Nomads, Jamie Petrie made an excellent covering tackle in the 28th minute after the Llanelli left winger got away from a tackle by Michael Robinson. As the half wore on, Llanelli began to edge it and they started forcing Nomads into errors, but Nomads kept working hard and came close to scoring in the 41st minute, when Ricky Evans struck a free-kick from 35 yards which went just wide of the post with the Llanelli keeper struggling to reach it. Then in the 42nd minute Gary O’Toole was harshly judged to be offside when running on to a through pass. No score at half-time and that was probably a fair reflection of the game. Within 4 minutes of the restart, Nomads were in the lead as a great through ball from Michael Thompson to Gary O’Toole, beat the Llanelli offside trap. The Nomads striker went round the keeper and found the net from an acute angle and then the celebrations started. As Llanelli tried to get back into the game, the Nomads defence stood firm and John Rushton made two excellent saves from the Llanelli forwards. Nomads were gifted a second goal on 58 minutes, when a Llanelli defender miscued an attempted back pass to his keeper from the touchline. Ricky Evans gathered the ball and moved goal wards before driving a 20 yard shot beyond the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Nomads nearly had a third 5 minutes later when Michael Thompson picked the ball up in the centre circle, ran through a 3 man Llanelli defence then passed to Ricky Evans, who forced a good save low down from the Llanelli keeper. Dean Canning replaced Gary O’Toole (73rd min) and Rhys Healey replaced Ricky Evans (81st) and with fresh legs on, Nomads continued to press forward, restricting Llanelli attempts to get back into the game. With a two goal cushion for Nomads, the game looked all over. But with 2 minutes left, Michael Thompson’s corner from the right curled over the defenders and the despairing attempt of the keeper and found the net, then in the 1st of 3 minutes of added time, Martin Rose scored a consolation goal for the visitors. It was very good team performance by the Nomads and a thoroughly deserved victory. 7

Green’s Piece

Club Secretary and Licensing Officer Trevor Green gives us his views ahead of today’s clash with Aberystwyth

Welcome to everyone who has travelled up from the coast today. Aber remain one of the best supported and friendliest clubs in the league and we will be hard matched to welcome them to the standard that they will give to us later in the year. To Tony and his committee , Tommi and his playing staff and the supporters we send a warm welcome to Deeside. So, as I write we are third in the league and with a game in hand. We saw in the pre season games that we were OK , and that we would be able to compete at WPL if luck went with us. We thought that we might get near to the top six at the split if everyone played to their strengths, with injuries and suspensions avoided. That remains our aim. Please don’t get carried away. We are doing very nicely thank you, but its a great competition and the fact that everyone seems to be able to beat everyone else has a dark side too. We would breath a lot easier if we already had a couple of sides likely to struggle isolated at the bottom , but we havent. Anyone who thinks that todays visitors and Bala will remain down there doesnt understand Welsh Football. So we go on looking to take points where we can and striving to get to thirty for the divide.Aber have the same goal and will be very difficult opponents this afternoon. Any result that ends Aberystwyth nil will do for me. We recieved a very interesting tie in the WPL cup first round. I was dreading a trip to Penrhyncoch, going their is a bit like being the tourists in deliverance!! Airbus got that dubious privelidge. We face a real match away to our friends and rivals Rhyl. A trip to Belle Vue is always a proper football event and although its not a high profile competition, in reality , I will look forward to being there on Tuesday 25th. We have shown the WPL how good the Alliance is over the past month, now we have to avoid proving the point.

Last week at Newtown we were confronted with a rare issue. Newtown’s keeper wore green. So we took our Orange keepers kit. Unbenown to us the referee had decided to wear Orange too. He had his black shirt on his bench , but he was in charge and he wanted to 10

wear his prefered kit. We ended up borrowing a yellow top from Newtown. Would he really have abandoned the match to make a point? We will never know. But it was a possibility. We are asking the referees to tell us what kit they will wear in the confirmation process in future and we will pass that on to the opposition. Interesting to see that Port Talbot wore an all orange kit at Aberystwyth last week and that the referee wore black there. Sometimes you show your strength by accepting the need to compromise and not by sticking your feet in the mud and refusing to budge. Whilst you are reading this I am piloting a motor boat down lake Windemere searching for a romantic cove to picnic upon. Im giving Pam a wedding anniversary to make up for the other 39 weekends in which I make her a football widow. I can only do this because Ray Brown has stepped up to the plate and accepted the Match Secretary role. I am grateful to Ray and hope his first match in the office goes well. We need more people in the team behind the team. Its good to see Andy back in a stewards coat , but we need a couple more to join David Griffiths team. We could do with a match day announcer and we need others too . Its fun , we all get to feel invvbolved and you get a bit of beer money too. Please see our Head of Security Gareth or General Manager John to get involved. Great start for our development squad. We have brought some very young players into the Reserve team but still they hold their own. We didnt expect to retain the title this year and the only results that matter come when we look at the first team teamsheet in five years time. However, we are hoping the Under 19’s compete well and do collect Silver. Thats because many of this current crop of lads are playing their last season of youth football. We won the NEWFA Youth Cup as an under 18 team in an Under 19 competition. We want to progress in the Welsh Youth Cup to the final stages. We want to retain the NEWFA Cup , but most of all we want to win the WPL Under 19 League. We started with a very comfortable 5-0 win over Bala but came down to Earth in relying on late goals to scratch out a 2-1 win over Airbus. The lads need to concentrate on finding the level of performance that got them to where they are. They need to take this chance of a last great youth season to make a claim to a first team squad shirt for next year. They need to listen to Jay and his staff because they will never get a better chance to make a career than they have now. Come and support them against Abers U-19’s here tommorow at 2pm. Next Saturday we meet Afan Lido here with a 2-30 pm kick off. Please tell a friend about the quality of football on offer and help us to improve upon our gate figures. Finally , many thanks to Lee , Huw, Dave and Gareth for giving their time to officiate today. Enjoy the game Trevor 11

Aberystwyth Town AFC’s Club History

The story of Aberystwyth Town AFC

Although Aberystwyth Town FC was formed in 1884, the club probably existed in the 1870s in an earlier incarnation - the re-establishment of a “town” club is recorded in 1876. Their early days were marked by friendly matches and it was not until 1896 that the club first joined a league - the Welsh League. After only one season they reverted to playing friendly matches but were firmly on the map in 1900, convincingly beating fancied Druids 3-0 in the Welsh Cup final and becoming the first team from mid-Wales to take the trophy. But this Welsh Cup victory almost proved to be their downfall as they hit a massive financial crisis and a mass exodus of players. Aber’s league career has a nomadic flavour, as they have been members of various leagues since they entered the first competition, the Welsh League, in 1896. That foray lasted only one season and they returned to playing friendly fixtures but did enter the English FA Cup on a few occasions. With interest in the club rekindled, they joined the “Combination” but again for only one term, probably because of the expense of travelling. Aber were members of the Montgomeryshire & District League from 1904, winning several championships, and with the advent of the Welsh National League in 1921 joined the Central Section. The club was very successful in the 1920s - achieving six title wins - and took the MidWales League title in 1933 and 1950. Aber won the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1931 and 1933 and were finalists in 1935 and 1972. 18

Aber were, by then, firmly established as one of the premier clubs in mid-Wales and in 1987 they returned to the Welsh League (South). They were three times runners-up before their inclusion as founder members of the League of Wales. Aber achieved their best LoW position - 3rd - in their first season and the club’s administrative and social set up are now well established. After several undistinguished seasons, the Seasiders reached the final of the Welsh Cup in 2009 under manager Brian Coyne, only to be beaten 2-0 by Bangor City. Coyne stepped down early the following season with Alan Morgan appointed as the new boss, and the club had one of it’s best finishes for years, finished in 4th in the 2009/10 season, narrowly missing out on qualification for Europe to Port Talbot Town.

Then under the first season of the Welsh Premier League Super 12, Aberystwyth, although in top 6 for most of the first half of the season, saw themselves in the bottom half of the table at the mid season split, being beaten to the top half again by Port Talbot. The club finished in 7th place, before beating Airbus in the Europa League playoff quarter final, and eventually losing out to Neath in the Semi-Final. The 2011/2012 season was something of a struggle, with ill-discipline taking its toll on the performances of the team overall. Aberystwyth Town found itself in the bottom 6 again, and in a real relegation battle. After a defeat to Cymru Alliance side Cefn Druids in the Welsh Cup, Alan Morgan stepped aside and the board made no hesitation in bringing back Tomi Morgan. Under Tomi the team rallied and managed to finish in 8th place, and so managed to qualify once again for the end of season Europa League playoffs. After beating Airbus in the quarter finals, Aber faced Llanelli, and although the team all performed admirably, it was to be another season of dissapointment as Llanelli won in extra time. 19

Nomads HGA League Champions 2010/11

HGA League Champions 2011/12

Lads Good afternoon and welcome to the Deeside stadium, where there is a good feeling around and rightly so. We arrive back home with 3 points from a visit to Newtown last week, in a game where we started off slow but by the second half had full control of the game. To add icing on top of the cake, Jamie Petrie treated us to masterful performance, beating every challenge that faced him on the right wing and not to mention slotting in two excellent goals. While Newtown were still putting some pressure on us in the late stages of the game, Rhys Healey came on to seal the game with a strike deflecting off the back of a Robins defender and into the net. However it goes in, a goal is a goal. That win last week now means we have racked up 3 wins out of a possible 4, a feat no one in this league would have predicted Nomads capable of, especially in the style we did it in. We also made a topic on S4C’s Sgorio highlights where the presenters praised our fantastic start to the season. In the league table we sit 3rd, just below Bangor and TNS. However, we have to keep our feet on the ground. Yes, we have had a great start and should recognise that, but instead of looking at the tables we need to take it week by week, game by game. In any game, you can’t win without focus. That’s why the lads should be concentrating on each game as it comes and the three points we can get out of it. Last season after our emphatic win over Rhyl which brought us 3 points from the title, many a team would have said the title was theirs. Nomads kept a lid on it and focused on the 3 points we needed. A week later we won the title. 22

Unfortunately not many of the Nomads Lads made it down to Newtown last week, but we always knew away trips were going to be tough. Please, if you know anyone that may be interested in joining the group please get them down here. Despite all the hard work Macca and the lads put in, they need the support in the stands. Onto today at Deeside we welcome Aberystwyth to Deeside where we should not expect anything less than a tough battle. Aber have had some tough results recently against the likes of Port Talbot and Bangor, but this makes them ever the more dangerous to bounce back. The Nomads will of course be up for the challenge and hopefully you will be cheering them on. Come on Nomads! The ‘Nomads Lads’ Player of the week Jamie Petrie We just can’t give it to anyone else other then last season’s Players/Manager/Fans player of the season. Last week at Latham Park he played a key role in grabbing the three points for nomads, as he has done for the past few seasons now and hopefully a few more to come. Nomads Lads Prediction for Today The Nomads 2-1 Aberystwyth Crowd: 200

Player Profiles: Aberystwyth Town AFC 1. Mike Lewis Cardiff based keeper Mike Lewis signed for Aberystwyth Town in May 2012 after leaving Carmarthen earlier the same month. Lewis had been the first choice keeper at Richmond Park for two seasons after Tomi Morgan made him one of his first signings at Carmarthen, and played his first game for Carmarthen against Aberystwyth, a 3-2 in front of the S4C cameras. Before Carmarthen Mike played for Afan Lido, Cardiff Corries and UWIC in the Welsh League, and has previously had a trial at Bristol Rovers. 2. Sion James Penrhyncoch born and bred Sion James, one of the longest serving players at the club, has been an integral part of the first team over the last eight years. Sion began his career at Aberystwyth, but finding his first team chances limited, spent time at Carmarthen Town, Barry Town and home village club Penrhyncoch FC before returning to Park Avenue in 2004 to cement his place in the first team. Happy to play where needed, Sion plays in a variety of positions across the back and midfield, but has made most of his starts as a centre back. Sion won supporters and players player of the year in season 2009/10. 5. Stuart Jones Based in Borth, Stuart Jones signed for his local Welsh Premier League club in May 2012, and will take on the role of Club Development Officer alongside his playing duties. Stuart began his career at Swansea City, and although he made over 30 appearances for the Swans between 2003 and 2005, was surprisingly released at the end of the 2004/05 season. Llanelli made no hesitation in making Stuart their first full time signing for over 50 years, and over the next 7 years made almost 200 appearances for the side and in that time at the club won the League, League Cup and Welsh Cup and qualified for Europe on several occasions. Stuart has also earned caps for both the Wales Under 21’s and the Welsh Semi Pro squads, and has been named in the Welsh Premier Team of the Year on no less than 4 occasions. 25. Ifan Burrell 17 Year Old Ifan made his Welsh Premier League debut against Carmarthen in 2011, and is currently playing with the Under 19’s side. A Blisteringly fast forward, Ifan is one to watch for the future. Named most improved Reserve team player in 2011/12.

24

4. Matty Collins Former Welsh Under 21 international signed for the Seasiders in June 2012, after the demise of Neath FC. Matty Collins was a trainee at Swindon Town before he snapped up by Premier League Fulham. Although highly rated at Craven Cottage, Collins was hampered by numerous injuries and in 2007 signed for Swansea City. During his first season Matty went on loan to Wrexham. At the start of the 2008/09 season Matty started the first three games of Swansea’s season, but over the next two seasons found his first team chances limited, and left the Swans in search of first team football. Matty signed for Pembrokeshire outfit Haverfordwest, but less than 6 months later followed exSwans Kris O’Leary and Lee Trundle and signed for Neath where he stayed for 18 months. Matty has been a Wales U21, U19 and U17 international, and was also called up to the full Welsh squad in 2008. 8. Sean Thornton In his second season with Aberystwyth, Sean Thornton arrived at Park Avenue is September 2011 after a year out of the game. The Irish born midfielder began his career with Tranmere Rovers, but was soon on the move to Sunderland for £225,000. During his time at the Stadium of Light Sean scored a memorable goal to give Sunderland the lead at Chelsea, in the English Premier League, which he made 11 appearances in during the 2002/003 season. During his 3 years at Sunderland, when he also spent time at Blackpool, Sean made around 50 appearances for the Wearside club, but unable to hold down a regular starting spot, moved to Doncaster in 2005. At Doncaster Sean managed to be part of the side that won the Football League Trophy in 2007. After leaving Doncaster, Sean spent time at Leyton Orient and Shrewsbury, before taking time out of the game and signed for the Seasiders in September 2011. Sean also made 12 appearances in for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 squad. 10. Michael Walsh Michael Walsh arrived at the club in January 2012 from Bangor, and stayed on for his second season at Park Avenue. Michael, a central midfielder, started his career with Rhyl before moving to Chester City in 2004, where he went onto make six first team appearances, and also scored on his debut for the club against Southend United in 2005. He later went on trial with Wrexham before Resigning for Rhyl, before moving to Bangor City. In 2009 Walshy moved abroad, signing for Cypriot team APOP Kinyras Pegias where he stayed for two seasons, before returning to Farrar Road, and after finding his first team chances limited, moved to Park Avenue the following January. Michael also captained the North Wales Under 18 team. 25

A slow start for Nomads which saw them come into light towards the end of the half with a goal each from Christoph and George Rathbone TNS responded with a single before the break but the game ended 2-1 to Nomads. Man of the match went to Shaun Shriggley who was a rock at the back of the Nomads four. Following this the action travelled up the road to Connah’s Quay High School where our under 12, 14 and 16 sides were in FAW Academy Cup action in games against newly formed academy Llansantfraid Village. All sides impressed with the 12s stealing the show with a 15-2 victory with goals from Max Moore 5, Coel Lambert 3, Lewis Hughes 3, Robbie Davies 1, Matthew Hill 1, Jack Lockley 1, Luis Delamere 1. Man of the match went to newly signed academy player Robbie Davies who was outstanding at the back in particular first half and also managed to get himself on the score sheet. Our 14s played in a very competitive game edging out one nil winners thanks to a Nathan Mendoza goal. Man of the match went to Shane Russell who as always was more dependable at the back. Our 16s looked very strong in a six nil victory scoring two goals in the first five minutes. Ben opened the scoring with Cobey Cooper scoring soon after before Joe Jones converted a penalty. Jamie Catherall, Michael Nolan and Lee Ludgate ensured the win with three further goals in the second half. Man of the match went to Michael Nolan. Then for the final game of the afternoon it was down to the Deeside Stadium for the 19s game against Airbus in the Welsh Premier Youth League. A shocking first half performance from Nomads saw them trail one nil at the break. Second half saw an improvement from the Nomads side but it wasn’t until 27

Academy Update substitute Josh Williams entered the pitch that the side really sparked into life in the final twenty minutes. Man of the match Williams grabbed two goals after good moves down the wings led to good finished from the winger. Massive room for improvement from the 19s, but a great result against a very strong Airbus youth side. These games all followed on from the first team’s success away to Newtown on Saturday with a three one victory. Goals of the game came from Jamie Petrie with two as well as a single from 17 year old academy player Rhys Healey. This is the first team’s third win on the bounce following victories over Port Talbot and Llanelli in a good start to life back in the Welsh Premier.

Under 11 players earn trials at professional club Under 11 players Alex Harrison Smith and Harvey Tattum have both been given a further six week trial period at Shrewsbury Town Centre of Excellence. Both players have worked massively hard since joining the academy last season and is a great achievement for both players. A big well done to both players and we wish them all the best during there time at the club. 2012-2013 – gap Connahs Quay Nomads Academy Players who have earned trials with professional clubs:

Academy players free entry at all first team games Following on from the first team’s great start to the season which has seen them record three wins out of four, the club and looking for more fans to support The Nomads. As has always been the case over the last few years and is the same this season, all academy players gain free entry to all home games in all competitions. It is always great to see local support for the club especially from an academy point of view with the first team performance having a direct link to the academy with regard to academy funding received through being in the top flight of Welsh football. The senior side have won 2 back to back Cymru Alliance titles the past 2 seasons. 7 different youth players played in competitive games last season as well as two already in the Welsh Premier in Rhys Healey and Ryan Edwards with Aled Reece, Jamie Wynne, Ryan Jones, George Baxter, Shaun Tinsley and Jordan Beck all been given first team squad numbers. More youth players involved than any other Welsh Premier side! Be great to see more academy players, parents, friends and family at more first team games this season!

A sit down with the Goalkeeping Coach

Neil warming up the ‘keepers in one of The Nomads’ pre-season friendlies The Nomads vs Port Talbot

Neil Ebrill Neil is an Ellesmere Port based goalkeeper coach with 20 years West Cheshire league playing experience and over 7 years coaching experience. Neil holds the FAW B licence in coaching goalkeepers and this is the highest accolade within the FAW. Besides coaching the first team, Neil also coaches all the club goalkeepers within the academy and reserve side. In addition to his club duties Neil also coaches a number of junior & senior goalkeepers privately and has coaching network links within Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere Rovers. Nomads Boss Macca, collared Neil at training and asked him the following questions:

33

A sit down with Neil Ebrill continued... Q: “How well do you think The Nomads will do in the WPL this season? A: “Everyone knows the WPL is a good tough league and it can be very unforgiving. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to step up and if we all sing from the same hymn sheet, then there’s nothing stopping us from developing sufficiently.” Q: “Do you have any interests or hobbies outside of football?” A: “Yes, enjoying time with the wife & my lads.” Q: “What is your sense of humour like?” A: “ I’m game for a laugh and I think most goalkeepers have to see the funny side of things at times!” Q: “Which Nomads game that you’ve been involved with, stands out the most for you and why?” A: “I’d say certain games over the last two seasons where we’ve played on poor standard pitches, with poor facilities. We have been thoroughly professional and where necessary, won ugly. Other sides around us have dropped points at these types of venues, but the preparation from the manager and the desire from the Nomads players were exceptional.” Q: “Is there anything that you would like to say to, or about our supporters?” A: “Yes, your support is most appreciated, keep on enjoying the ride!” Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions Neil, I’m sure our supporters will appreciate it.
