The Nomads v Afan Lido

From ‘The Gaffer’

Macca’s Notes Welcome back to Deeside for our first league game of the season. It’s been a long pre season as we only had two weeks break from our last game against Bala Town, but the lads have worked really hard to get fitter and stronger than last season. Myself and Jay have made sure that we have covered all bases so that nobody can say we haven’t done enough to prepare the right way. There will be a few league debuts today and I wish the lads a good season - the team spirit is at an all time high and we are ready to do all we can to have a successful season. We know how hard today’s game will be as Lido have added to their squad over the summer and it will be a good game to begin with, so we will have to be ready for a scrap! With three games in six days, the squad will be used to the limit and players will be given the chance to play. Hope you enjoy the game and come on The Nomads! Macca

The Nomads v Afan Lido

Last match Nomads unable to keep out Wingmakers A string of fine saves including a penalty stop from Terry McCormick was not enough to keep Airbus at bay as The Wingmakers ran out 1-0 victors. The game saw The Nomads give debuts to our new yellow away kit and also our newest signing, Mark Smyth who started the game on the left wing. Both teams started the game well and it was Airbus who had the first sight of goal as the ball was headed over from a long throw after just three minutes. Both hosts and visitors were playing some nice football but a mixup between Mike sharples and Terry McCormick saw Sharples head the ball beyond McCormick only to be saved by the recovering Danny Dobbins on the line. Airbus started to get the better of possession and on the 24th minute Airbus had the ball in the net, but it was ruled out for a push on Mike sharples which unfortunately saw the end to his game. Sharples came down awkwardly from his aerial contest and rolled his ankle on his landing, so Jamie Wynne was introduced in his place. The first of Terry’s fine saves saw him dive low to his right on the 30th minute to deny a Chris Simm header following a whipped cross from the right wing. Nine minutes later and McCormick was in action again as Airbus worked a short corner which saw left back Lewis Short dance his way into the box before unleashing a venomous left footed drive - the ball was heading for the bottom corner, but McCormick sprung down low to his left to turn the ball around the post for another corner. At the other end, some nice play between Mike Hayes and Mark Smyth saw the debutant break down the left of the box and slam the ball across the face of the goal only for Airbus ‘keeper Bulmer to palm the ball away. Half time came with the scores still level, but it was the home team who had enjoyed the better first half. The second half saw Mark McGregor, Paul Mooney and Jason Lampkin introduced in place of Mike Robinson, Danny Dobbins and Craig Jones, but just six minutes in and Airbus were at it again, this time Chris Budrys latching on to a through ball inside the box and unfortunately for Jamie Wynne, he had gotten the wrong side of his man and dragged him down inside the box giving the referee little choice but to award Airbus a penalty. Northern Ireland international Steve Jones stepped up to take the penalty and smashed it hard down the centre of the goal, only to see a diving McCormick turn the ball away and keep the scores level. It seemed like only a matter of time however and on the 55th minute Glenn Rule cut in from the right and hit a sweet left footed strike goalbound - it hit the left hand post before pinging back across goal beyond the reach of McCormick, clipped the inside of the other post and nestled inside the net to give Airbus a deserved lead. Chris Simm again force a good save from McCormick before striking a free kick narrowly over the bar. The introduction of Simon Everall in place of debutant Mark Smyth saw The Nomads a little more cohesive in the final third and we started to create a few chances towards the end of the second half. On 68 minutes some nice attacking play saw the ball land at Paul Mooney’s feet in the left channel who slammed a fierce strike off the bar, only to see the rebound bounce clear to safety. The remainder of the half saww a couple of chance for both teams as legs started to tire and fresh subs found space with the final chance of hte game falling to The Nomads who with five minutes to go saw a corner whipped in from Mooney and the ball was heading goalbound following a deflection off an Airbus defender, only to see Bulmer grasp the ball to deny McGreogr a tap in, just as two Airbus players went down on the penalty spot after clashing heads.

Green’s piece

GREEN’S PIECE

Club secretary Trevor Green gives his views Well, here we go again! After a tightly planned pre-season that really couldn’t have gone much better we couldn’t be more eager for league action. We have assembled a very attack minded side full of flair and we have worked hard to rebrand to match the way we play. The players walk way to the pitch will be an exciting one with the new art work, (hopefully arriving in the next week to 10 days). We’ve rebuilt the dressing rooms, and we are now wearing a distinctive Blood Red kit that matches our approach to football. As you saw against that outstanding Cardiff City side, we don’t care how good you are we will play from the back and on the deck. We won’t meet opposition of that quality in our regular season and in the WPL our philosophy is quite simple, you score three well score four! Today’s visitors are Afan Lido, they exchanged victories with us last season, and we won both games here scoring nine but conceding four. At their place we lost both times by two goals to one. Lido survived because no one from the Welsh League (the South Wales feeder) could get a license and finish in the top two. Although we were desperately sorry to see Llanelli fold (and we are really pleased that sense has followed Barry’s court victory in seeing the Reds re-instated into the pyramid too), we were pleased for our Port Talbot based friends and we welcome Alan and the officials plus Paul and his players. Lido are quite a dangerous opponent with Chris Hartland specialising in vicious 30 yarders and a well organised team all told, we know that there are no easy wins at this level and we expect to have to earn the points today. We saw last Friday just what a powerful outfit Airbus are, strength, pace and great play switching cross field balls. The long ball game is not so unattractive when it’s played with that amount of variety. I am sure that they and our next visitors Bala Town will provide the main challenge to TNS for this year’s title. It’s always dangerous to write off Bangor City and I am sure they along with Port Talbot, Prestatyn and Carmarthen will join us in battling for a top six place at the split in January. But then Newtown, Rhyl, Aber and Lido will harbour the same hopes. This is a very strong league and the margins will probably be as tight as last year where ten of the twelve teams went into the final two first phase matches with hopes of a top six place. At the end after 32 matches four points separated the four clubs finishing from 8th to 11th. In a year when two went down one win could have been the difference between relegation and the European play offs.

The Nomads v Afan Lido

Green’s Piece As I said, we play lovely football; our facilities are good and our prices outstanding. We deserve more support. Those we have are top class, but you can all help by bringing along a friend or two. The more support the better the atmosphere, we saw that with the two near 500 gates for Wrexham and Cardiff, what a difference it makes, so give it a go ... please. We wish all the best to the players who will make League debuts for us today, Simon [Everall], Paul [Mooney], Mike [Sharples] and Danny [Desormeaux] have all been settled into our way in pre season and they have become popular players already. Mark Smyth joined late on but we all know what a good player he can be after seeing him do well against us, particularly for Bangor. Mike Hayes and Terry return to us after spells away. With the established players remaining from last year we have a squad who we are very proud of. They are good players and after spending time with them (particularly on our Yorkshire tour) I can assure you they are good lads too. We will look forward to a season in which I am sure we will be a force to be reckoned with and I am sure we will have some fun. I finish this up beat first set of notes by commending our Academy. Five years ago Levi Lloyd, Steve O’Shaunessy, Darren Wynne, Jay Catton and myself met at Dock Road on a September Sunday. We hoped to run Under 12’s, Under 14’s and Under 16’s in that first season we were disappointed when only nine players turned up and signed on. We didn’t despair and by the end of the first season I set an objective of five being good enough for first team by 2014. Ryan [Edwards] and Jamie [Wynne] are now established WPL players; Shaun [Tinsley] is close to joining them. Rhys [Healey] is on the cusp of the Premier League. We have a great set up from under 9’s to Under 19’s; please take some time to watch them. Talking about Academy prospects, Abe Dobson our up and coming 17 year old midfielder is the first to go out on loan this year we wish him all the best at Conwy Borough and look forward to seeing the benefit regular first team football there will give him when he plays for our Under 19’s. We thank our match officials for travelling up to officiate and we look forward to meeting them, Lido and yourselves over in the Bar/ Restraunt after the game. Don’t forget we are at Port Talbot on Monday and then we entertain Bala here next Friday, so see you then! Enjoy the game Trevor

10 The Nomads v Afan Lido

Pre season report Six goals shared evenly on Deeside There was nothing to seperate The Nomads and Nantwich Town in a game which saw six goals split evenly as the game ended 3-3. A slightly different look Nomads’ team struggled to get started in the opening five minutes with a number of misplaced passes, however it only took seven minutes to get on the score sheet. Trialist Jason Lampkin was set free down the right wing on three minutes forcing a good save from Nantwich’s Chris Cheetham, and Ricky Evans put the rebound into the side netting, but four minutes later, Lampkin was not to be denied. Again he was in down the right wing and again struck for goal, this time his sweet strike nestling in the far corner beyond Cheetham’s dive giving The Nomads a 1-0 lead despite not playing too well. A minute later and it could have easil been two, with Lampkin setting up Ricky Evans whose goalboand shot was blocked by the head of a falling defender. On the 18th minute, Nantwich’s ex-Nomad Aaron Burns had the ball in the net turning in a cross-shot from the right wing, but it was soon ruled out for offside. Nantwich kept pressing however, and a minute later managed to go through two on one with Nomads’ ‘keeper Jon Rushton who was easily rounded for Max Harrop to equalise. Six minutes later and Nantwich took the lead from a corner as The Nomads failed to clear a corner and Peter Wright turned to hit the ball high into Jon Rushton’s net. The Nomads hit back well with Ricky Evans heading just wide on the 31st minute and three minutes later, Lampkin was in down the right wing again, but appeared to get caught in two minds and when a shot should have come, he chose to cross the ball and Nantwich ‘keeper Chris Cheetham easily cut the ball out. With two minutes to go, Aaron Burns went through one on one with Jon Rushton - Burns went round Rushton and appeared to be clipped inside the box by Jon as he went over, and much to the bemusement of the Nantwich management, a goal kick was given. The Nomads resumed the second half with one change seeing striker Mike Hayes replace defender Mike Robinson, but it was Nantwich who started the second half well and were unlucky not to extend their lead as a near post flick from Burns hit the underside of The Nomad’s bar, only to see the ball spin away from goal. The Nomads responded well though and on the 54th minute, Simon Everall dived for the ball at the back post, only to miss connecting with the ball by a matter of inches, and a minute later Everall slammed the ball into the net against his old club, only to see it ruled out for offside. More pressure from The Nomads in the 62nd minute saw Chris Cheetham make a great block from Ricky Evans, and when the ball rebounded, it bounced off Mike Hayes and trickled towards the goal, only to see Cheetham pounce on the ball on the line to prevent an equaliser. The 62nd minute saw Peter Wright go through on goal and when it seemed easier to score, he attempted to be too clever going round Jon Rushton and ended up running the ball out of play. At the other end, Mike Hayes got round the back of the Nantwich defence on a number of occassions in the second half, and a minute after Wright’s chance, Hayes poked the ball beyond the advancing Cheetham, and took a clattering in the process, only to see the ball finish up an inch the wrong side of the post. Four minutes later though, Hayes was not to be denied as Ricky Evans played a defence splitting ball to put Hayes through who finished with aplomb to make the scoreline 2-2. There were a few more chances for both teams in the next 10 minutes, but on the 77th minute, Aaron Burns became the second ex-Nomad in a week to score at Deeside Stadium as he gathered the ball around 20-25 yards from The Nomads goal, turn quickly and unleash a wonderful left footed strike in to the top corner of The Nomads goal, having attempted a similar attempt on a number of occassions earlier in the game. The Nomads didn’t want to lost the game though, and on the 86th minute, substitute Jamie Wynne arrived to head home a Paul Mooney corner and draw The Nomads level again. The final minute saw the game take a sour turn as ex-Nomads Simon Everall went down off the ball as young substitute David Thompson appeared to connect with the back of Everall’s head. Everall required treatment and the players exchanged words after the final whistle, but Simon was given a nice send off by the travelling Nantwich fans as they sang a rendition of “Super Simon Everall” as The Nomads’ were warming down following the game.

The Nomads v Afan Lido

A view from the stand

The wait is over and it’s here. This afternoon the summer football fast has officially ended as the welsh premier league kicks off again all over the nation. We kick off with a highly anticipated competition for this years title with TNS as ever ready to retain, Airbus a growing super force in the league and the likes of Rhyl back at the top flight of welsh football. However today you’re at the Deeside Stadium, which means the only teams you’re bothered about today are in today’s fixture: Nomads vs Afan Lido. Summer traditionally is a break from football, but on Deeside it has never really stopped with a jam packed Pre Season involving the likes of Wrexham who we took a surprise 3-1 victory from, and an experienced Cardiff squad that tested the new and youthful Cardiff side. As a guide, here’s some of the new additions to Nomads that have helped raise expectations for this season ahead.

Simon Everall Already earning the title of ‘Super Simon’ our signing from Nantwich town has settled in smoothly with the squad and netted goals already in pre season.

Paul Mooney A signing that made waves across the welsh premier scene as the former Rhyl Player who has came close to a contract with Swindon Town, Paul joined us after a two year long attempt to get his much wanted signature.

Danny Desormeaux A veteran of the welsh premier who served for Rhyl and Airbus where he played a prominent goalscoring role, The gaffer signed Danny with the hopes he’d bring experience to the squad.

16 The Nomads v Afan Lido

Anticipation will be around Deeside today as we kick off our season but we shall not forget Afan Lido, who have made big additions to the squad and will know how to fight in the relegation zone as they fought in it for a long time last year before being granted Welsh Premier League once again in the summer. Nomads and Lido are part of the handful of teams that many have predicted for the drop this year, here today we will see how determined both sides are to prove them wrong. One to watch Terry McCormick To many regulars here this name is one that looks familiar as Terry is a former nomad returning to Deeside. After leaving Nomads two years ago to join Bala and then a place at Conwy Borough. He returns to challenge John Rushton for the regular first team keeper spot - A battle worth watching closely as Nomads now have two quality keepers under their belt. Nomads Lads Prediction for Today The Nomads 3-1 Afan Lido

Afan Lido’s Club History Shortly after the opening of the Lido Sports Centre in Aberavon, current Director of Football, Phil Robinson, part of the Centre’s management team, saw the need to organise the many who came to the centre regularly in order to play football. In June 1967, he formed them into a club that gained admittance into the local Port Talbot and District League for season 1967-68. This club was AFAN LIDO FC. A move upwards came in 1971-72 when the club was accepted into the Welsh Football League. Two seasons later, Lido earned promotion into the First Division (now Second Division) and after another two - year spell, gained promotion to the Premier Division (now the First Division and the second tier in the Welsh system). After finishing third in their first season at this level, there followed a barren spell that saw the club drop back a division until they bounced back in 1984-85. By this time the league had been reorganized and a higher National Division formed, to which they gained promotion 1989-90 after finishing third. The two previous seasons had actually seen them win the Premier Division championship but failed to reach the ground criteria set by the League. The formation of the League of Wales provided the next step for the club, their application to join was successful, and were invited to become founder members for the inaugural 1992-93 season. A healthy mid-table position was achieved in this first season, finishing 12th overall. However, success in the League Cup, beating Caersws on penalties provided a superb end to the season. This was not the club’s first major cup success however; in 1986-87 they had won the Welsh Intermediate Cup beating Taffs Well 1-0 in a replay at Briton Ferry. Lido’s cup exploits continued in 1993-94. In a thrilling final at Aberystwyth, beating a rampant Bangor City side that had just clinched the League title. The narrow 1-0 win was enough to make people take notice and help fans forget a disappointing League campaign. The club transformed matters, and narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 16th. At the start of the 1994-95 season however, things changed at our club. A stronger defence was in place with a decidedly scrooge-like attitude to giving goals away, only 36 were conceded all season. A consistency matched only by the eventual champions saw Lido finish in second place and earn an UEFA Cup spot. From the inception of the League of Wales, Europe was only a dream and its realisation was a just reward for the hard work put in by a tightly knit management committee. Defeat in the UEFA Cup at the hands of RAF Riga of Latvia was a bitter pill to swallow, a 2-1 defeat at home gave them a mountain to climb away but we battled hard and deserved the nil-nil draw. Lido were one of the first League of Wales sides to avoid defeat on foreign soil. Sadly they failed to build on this performance and were relegated at the end of the 1994-95 season. Their first season back in the Welsh league saw them consolidate and they eventually finished in sixth position having earlier been in a position to challenge for the league. Following Mark Robinson’s appointment as General Manager and David Dale as Chairman, they won promotion back to the league of Wales at the end of the 1997-98 season. A number of ground improvements had taken place, including a 400 seater stand and a new clubhouse. 22 The Nomads v Afan Lido

Consolidation was again the aim and they finished in 14 place in thier first season back in the league of Wales. A satisfactory position considering the age and experience in the side. In season 1999-2000 they firmly established themselves as members of Wales’ Premier League, finishing tenth, narrowly missing qualification for the lucrative BBC/FAW Premier Cup, and lost in the semi-final of the Welsh Cup 4-2 after extra time, against Bangor City, the club’s best ever run in the competition. In season 2000-2001 hopes were high of a top eight finish and they were disappointed to finish 11th and once again fail to qualify for the Premier Cup. In 2003-04 Lido were again in the FAW Premier cup after finishing in 7th place in the league. Drawn against Connah’s Quay, Rhyl and Newport County. Despite an encouraging start 0-0 at Rhyl and 2-2 at Connah’s Quay, they failed to pick up any further points and finished bottom of the group. Their league form also disappointed, finishing in 14th place with only 32 points from 32 matches. A number of injuries didn’t help but their failure in front of goal proved costly. Only 31 goals were scored in the 32 matches. 2004-05 was again a huge disappointment, an opening day 2-1 loss at TNS was, despite the result encouraging, the winning goal being scored 5 minutes from time. Sadly, Lido conceded late goals in several games which cost them, as draws were turned into defeats thereby losing valuable points. Their best results of the season were two wins against newly promoted Airbus UK, a 4-1 away win followed by a 4-0 home win. Unfortunately in the 4-0 win Lido played Leigh Shrimpton who was serving a ban picked up while playing for another side. Lido were unaware of this as the football authorities hadn’t informed them and it was to cost them dearly. Lido were found guilty of playing an ineligible player and were deducted three points which proved crucial as it left them bottom of the league with a couple of matches left. They were unable to recover these points on the field and an appeal against the loss of points fell on deaf ears. The 2012-13 season saw The Nomads meet Lido on four occassions with an aggregate score of 11-8 in favour of The Nomads. Lido finished at the bottom of the Welsh Premier League however retained their position in the Welsh Premier League due to the Welsh League not producing a qualified team for promotion.

Hayes and Forde put Lido to the sword A second convincing home win in four days strengthened the Nomads’ aim of securing a place in the European play offs with Danny Forde and Mike Hayes once again appearing on the scoresheet. Having had to travel up from South Wales for this midweek game, Afan Lido showed great commitment and at times belied their position at the bottom of the league table but they were unable to breech the Nomads defence which held firm without conceding a goal for the first time in seven games. Apart from a second minute Lido effort which required a good save from John Rushton, there was little action to entertain the sparse crowd in the first fifteen minutes. Then in the 16th minute the Nomads started to take control of the game and a Ricky Evans header from a corner kick was stopped on the goal-line, leading to another two corners in quick succession. A few minutes later in the 24th minute, the Nomads were 1-0 up, courtesy of Danny Forde who latched on to a Rob Jones pass to hammer the ball into the corner of the net. Credit to Rob Jones for getting his pass away despite being fouled by a Lido player and credit to referee Lee Evans for playing the advantage and allowing Danny to score. Having taken the lead, the Nomads were in the ascendency and after good build up play, Ryan Edwards hit a long range effort over the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Jamie Petrie made a good run into the Lido box, beating 3 players on his way. Then Mike Hayes threatened the Lido goal when collecting the ball from a long throw-in from Rob Jones, but he was penalised for a foul on the keeper as he tried to squeeze the ball into the net. A neat one-two between Ricky Evans and Hayes saw Ricky run into the box, but Lido cleared and then Rob Jones shot just wide after being put through by a pass from Ryan Edwards. As half-time approached it looked as though the Nomads would go in 1-0 up but a second goal came in the 44th minute when Ricky Evans fed a pass through to Mike Hayes who saw his first shot saved by the Lido keeper but followed up to hit the rebound into the back of the net. At half-time, the Nomads looked good value for their 2-0 lead. The visitors had looked dangerous on occasions, with Chris Hartland showing his pace and skill on the ball, but apart from the save made by John Rushton at the start of the game, the Nomads’ goal had remained largely untroubled. The first action of note in the second half came when Mike Hayes made a good run into the Lido penalty area, but play was stopped when he lost control and was judged to have committed a foul after trying to win the ball back. This was followed by a spell of Lido pressure on the Nomads’ goal and after Mike Robinson slipped on the ball, John Rushton was called on to make a very good save. Minutes later, Rushton was forced into another good save from a Lido header and he was relieved to see a 30yard effort from Hartland bounce back into play off the crossbar. After this spell of Lido pressure, the Nomads once again took control and it was no surprise when a third goal came in the 75th minute, with Mike Hayes the scorer. The goal started with a flowing move out of the Nomads’ defence with Ricky Evans running in towards goal from the left before hitting a shot which rebounded from the far post straight into the path of Mike Hayes who hit it into the net. Two minutes later and Ricky Evans sent in a short free kick to the unmarked John Hardiker who was unfortunate to see his goalbound shot hit the post and go behind for a goal kick. This was followed by an outstanding save from John Rushton as he palmed a fierce shot from Lido’s Hartland over the bar. As the game drew near to a close, both sides made late substitutions then a Ryan Edwards pass gave Mike Hayes a chance to get his hat-trick, but his shot was blocked. A good performance by the Nomads and the added bonuses of not conceding and not collecting any bookings.

Mark made over 90 appearances for Bangor City during his spell with the club scoring 23 goals from midfield. Last season saw Mark sign for Prestatyn Twon in January making nine appearances and scoring twice. Earlier in his career, Mark played for Liverpool making a Carling Cup appearance against Tottenham Hotspur, but was realased from Anfield in 2005 before heading to Accrington Stanley and Vauxhall Motors. Mark looked sharp, playing around 60 minutes for The Nomads on Friday night against Airbus befor being replaced by Simon Everall. The weekend has also seen Josh Lane part ways with the club following his brief spell at Deeside following his summer move from Nantwich Town. The Nomads Director of Football Mark McGregor spoke about the comings and goings at the club saying “We have had a quick turn around of players in the last 48 hours with Josh [Lane] moving on an Mark [Smyth] coming in. I felt it was best for Josh to move on as he wouldn’t feature much and at his age, he needs to be playing games regularly. Mark on the other hand knows what the Welsh Premier League is all about and has great experience in it - he’s fit, quick and will prove a great signing.”

TEAM MATES WITH MIKE HAYES

Pre match meal? Beans on toast or scrambled egg on toast - Free range eggs from Sharples’ farm!) Worst dressed player? There are a few for this - thankfully I’m out of the frame these days apart from my school pumps! It’s a toss up between Sharples or the gaffer. If I had to choose I’d have to go for the gaffer for that shirt in Leeds - still unsure whose curtains they were! Worst trainer? Easy... just waiting for him to turn up... Ricky “Alway Late” Evans. Still doesn’t pass to me in training, never mind matches. If you had a sister which teammate would you let take her out? I would go with Jon Rushton - I know she will be home in once piece nice and early as he’ll be rushing home to play FIFA! Which teammate would you snog, marry or avoid? Snog: Terry McCormick - rough and rugged just how I like my men! Marry: Would have to be my new strike partner Simon Everall - he made me feel special in Leeds! Avoid: Tigger - I’ve know him four years and unfortunately he’s not changed one bit! Thickest player? Si - he is rather special! Even after 10 weeks of pre season and the set plays being up in the changing room the whole time, he still blocks my run rather than my markers run! Who is the best/worst player you have ever played with and against? Played with: Best: Mark Jones (Bala) Worst: Chris Herbert (Conwy Borough) Played against: Best: Lee Trundle (Neath) Worst: Too many to list

Funniest player? Dumb and dumber - Tigger and Ricky! Constant banter from these two is hilarious. The club wouldn’t be the same without the class clowns.

Worst trainers/boots/pumps in the squad? Apparently my pumps but I’d have to disagree - Macca’s red boots were shocking until he pulled out a yellow pair to take the award, although Si’s taped together boots take a close second!

Best lookalike in the squad? Robbo as Johnny Bravo or Jack as Robbo from three years ago! The TheNomads Nomadsv Cardiff v Afan Lido City

Marc Lloyd Williams, the League’s all-time top goal scorer is also looking ahead to the new season; “The fact that three clubs experienced European football for the first time over the summer will have given a number of other teams the belief that they can emulate their achievements. The New Saints will again be the team to beat but I feel that Airbus UK will give them a really good run for their money.” The Corbett Sports WPL new season was officially launched at Rhyl FC on Tuesday. The stadium will now be known as the Corbett Sports Stadium once again emphasising Corbett Sports’ commitment to Welsh football and our National League. On this opening weekend of the Welsh Premier League season, the FAW will be promoting the FAW Fair Play and Off the Pitch campaigns. Today, your team as well as the match officials will be wearing T-Shirts with the FAW Fair Play and Off the Pitch logos during the warm up and hand-shake to promote the Fair Play message. We hope that your club as well as you as supporters will embrace the Fair Play message and continue the good work your clubs have already done over past seasons. The FAW Fair Play Code aims to raise the profile of the Fair Play message by inspiring players, clubs, officials and supporters to maintain good on-field discipline including abiding by the Laws of the Game, respecting opponents, referees and promoting the interests of football. To encourage good behaviour, the FAW will periodically publish Disciplinary Tables for each of the Directly-Affiliated Leagues via a dedicated page on the FAW website. Those topping each table at the end of the season are awarded a Fair Play Award and a prize of ÂŁ1000 to be spent on improving facilities at your club. Previous winners of the Award have invested the money on an upgrade to dressing rooms, new equipment such as balls, bibs, kit and improving the pitch. The 12 Winners for the 2012/13 season will receive the ÂŁ1000 prize money and also be presented with a Fair Play trophy before the Wales v Serbia FIFA World Cup Qualifying match in September. The FAW Off the Pitch campaign is also represented here today and aims to educate all of our stakeholders including clubs and players with regards best practice when using social media. Off the Pitch is also here to remind stakeholders how comments made via social media can reflect on their club or competition that they participate in and therefore, offers advice to players and club officials such as treating others with respect, be in the right state of mind when posting and to generally act responsibly when using all forms of social media. The Off the Pitch campaign is unique amongst National Associations within Europe and has been utilised as evidence of best practice with regards promoting the positive usage of social media by UEFA. The FAW social media team look forward to continuing to work together with all its stakeholders over the coming seasons. For more information on the FAW Fair Play Award and Off the Pitch initiatives, please visit the Discipline section of the FAW website: www.faw.org.uk/Discipline.ink
