Global Engagement SIEMPRE VERDE

Siempre Verde (“Forever Green”) is Lovett’s 830-acre research station and reserve in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Each year, Siempre Verde hosts over 100 international visitors, including students in grades 5 through 12, faculty, community members, and botanists through our partnership with the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Lovett purchased Siempre Verde in 1992.

COURSES ON LOCATION

“The Lovett Learner...is prepared to think and act with empathy as a responsible global citizen in an increasingly diverse landscape.” (The Lovett School Vision for Learning) Through their coursework in all three divisions, students come to understand cultures, histories, and stories different from their own. Beyond our campus, we challenge students to reach outside their comfort zones to engage authentically with others.

Lovett regularly offers Upper School summer classes on location. Recent offerings include Documentary Photography in Mexico; Israel: Holy Land, Divided Land; Tropical Ecology at Siempre Verde; Art and the Environment at Siempre Verde; and Language and Culture Immersion at Siempre Verde.

SPRING BREAK AND SUMMER TRAVEL

Spring break and summer travel challenges students to reach outside their comfort zones to engage authentically with others, often in settings that stretch them physically, emotionally, academically, and culturally. Recent destinations have included Italy, Ireland, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Morocco. Through the World Leading School Association (WLSA), Lovett also facilitates a two-week business internship in Shanghai for students of Chinese.

GLOBAL ONLINE ACADEMY

Lovett is a member of the Global Online Academy (GOA), a consortium of the world’s leading independent schools, whose mission is to reimagine learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society. Twenty students each year enroll in online classes through GOA.

SHORT-TERM EXCHANGES

Rising 10th and 11th graders may apply for two-way summer exchanges with schools in England, Australia, or South Africa. These experiences typically last three to five weeks, with students’ exchange partners visiting Lovett in the fall.

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

Lovett regularly hosts groups of international visitors who spend approximately two weeks living with Lovett host families, attending classes, and experiencing Atlanta. Recent student and faculty visitors have hailed from China, South Africa, and Honduras.

SEMESTER SCHOOLS

Lovett supports 10th and 11th graders who wish to study away at an approved semester school in the United States or abroad. In recent years, Lovett students have attended Swiss Semester, Alzar School, Maine Coast Semester, The Traveling School, and the School for Ethics and Global Leadership, among others.

DIPLOMA DISTINCTIONS

Students with a particular interest in Global Studies, Service & Leadership, or Sustainability have the opportunity to pursue a diploma distinction (akin to a college major) in their area of interest. Approximately 15 students graduate with distinction each year.
