It’s a Dog’s Life If you’re considering giving an animal in need a forever home in 2015, you’ll definitely need a copy of this issue. From animal shelters to pet supplies, we’ve got everything you need to set up a loving home for a furry friend.

editor’s letter

Looking for a pet? Ditch the pet store and check out these adoption agencies (p.20) instead. Hong Kong mongerels—or tong gau—are smart, loyal and don’t have the health conditions that many purebreds suffer from. If you have a specific breed in mind, poodles, poms and shih tzus can be found in many adoption centers. There are also plenty of cats, rabbits, hamsters and turtles looking for good homes. Once you’ve got your new friend, it’s time to load up on essential pet gear (p.30) and find a healthcare provider. Our listing of vets (p.26) should make the search a little easier. Then, once you’re all set up, it’s time to have some fun! We’ve got info for dogfriendly parks (p.32) and restaurants (p.34), and even the details of a bus service (p.40) that’ll take you and your pooch all over town. And when you need to be out of town for a few days? We have listings for pet-sitters and animal hotels (p.38) so you can rest assured that Fluffy gets nothing but five-star treatment while you’re enjoying yourself. Woof!

Three Weird Things We Learned From This Issue • You can buy an urn for a horse (p.40) • Hong Kong is home to a celebrity Bichon Frisé called Cash, whose owner feeds him abalone and foie gras (p.36) • There is such a thing as “doggie fat camp” and you can send your portly pooch to one (p.39)

Panasonic DMC-GM1K I carry my camera with me as often as I can. You never know when you’ll stumble on to something unique or discover a new corner of Hong Kong. Not only is it easy to use, it’s compact and super light yet still produces amazing, highquality photos.

Tonfisk Design Milk & Sugar Set I got this milk and sugar set from a close friend for my birthday. It uses gravity to keep the sugar bowl on top while you pour milk from the side of the pitcher! I’m always making coffee at home so this unique set makes the process a little bit more fun.

Caracas Candle Tania Ng Tania Ng is the co-founder of Carte Collective, a recently launched Hong Kong-based online store that offers affordable, stylish outfits. She tells The List about her favorite things. www.cartecollective.com

I am a crazy candle collector. This one by Glasshouse is my favorite because it has a refreshing light floral scent that makes you feel like you’re walking on a bed of flowers. After you’ve finished up the candle you can use it as a Pinterest-worthy jar for your makeup brushes, pencils, cotton buds or candies.

Dolly Wink Eyeliner Since I was 16 years old, I’ve been on the hunt for the best eyeliner and I finally found this holy grail liquid liner in Sasa a couple of years ago. This super affordable liquid liner is extremely easy to use and creates precise lines perfect for those who love the cat-eye look just as much as me!

Stingray Leather Card Holder I got this card holder made at Zee’s Leather in Tsim Sha Tsui. I love how affordable it is and how you can customize the type of leather you use and the shape of the holder. In addition to cardholders, Zee’s Leather also specializes in shoes, handbags and wallets.

Leather Moto Jacket I’ve had this Blue Heroes leather moto jacket for many years—the quality is well worth the money. A good leather jacket is that classic piece that will never go out of style. I also love how you can just add it to practically any outfit and immediately take it up a notch!

Wanderlust Dress This is my favorite piece from our online shop. It’s the epitome of the Carte Collective girl: unapologetically sexy, effortless and romantic. To me it’s that statement dress every girl needs in her wardrobe for special occasions, or just a night where she can spice things up. It’s got a bit of an Asian flair but still works for the city girl.

Eyes on the Prize

Gone are the days of getting lost in the great outdoors: now there’s an app to make your next hike a breeze. Recently launched in Hong Kong, TrailWatch comes with lots of handy map functions that will track your elevation, distance and calories burned. The features also let you take pictures, and create and share trails with other hikers—making it a great resource for exploring new treks across the territory. If it breaks your tree-hugging heart to see trash spilled on the trails, you can do your part by reporting litter and construction through the app to help monitor and clean up Hong Kong’s environment. There goes the case for unplugging! trailwatch.hk. Free via iTunes or Google Play.

There’s nothing like a string of boozy nights and a hectic holiday travel schedule to aggravate those delicate under-eyes. Following a long-haul trot to the US that left her with dry, irritated eyes and skin, senior editor Kate Springer gave Benefit’s new Puff Off eye smoother a try. It comes with a quirky dispenser that looks like an iron, so you can give it a squeeze and then smooth the cooling cream around puffy peepers. The tingly feel immediately energizes your eyes and visibly helps with puffiness, thanks to skincalming peptides. But if you’re after an all-in-one deal that will combat dark circles, you’ll have to keep looking. Available Feb 1, 2015. $280 from Benefit counters including Lane Crawford, Times Square, 1 Matheson St., Causeway Bay, 3102-3690

If you’ve got some extra love to give and enough free time to care for an animal, why not provide a dog with its forever home? Judy Wan from SPCA and LAP founder Sheila McClelland tell The List what you need to know.

It really tugs at the heart strings knowing that hundreds of pets are abandoned on Hong Kong’s streets every month. The city’s animal rescue charities do a fantastic job, but they couldn’t do it without you: their next potential fosterer or adopter. So if you’re thinking of getting a dog this year, don’t head to the pet store: visit your nearest rescue shelter and give a homeless animal a loving family. Just make sure to read these need-to-knows before you take the plunge.

14

Ask the Experts The List: Is it true that lots of pets get abandoned after Christmas? Sheila McClelland: The rate of abandonment is, sadly, a continual

flow. It tends to go up around holiday time, whether that’s Christmas or summer. Older animals are dumped before Chinese

New Year, apparently for superstitious reasons. And while it’s generally assumed that people abandon animals after the holiday, it’s quite often our experience that animals are actually dumped before, so that the owners can go away on holiday. Whatever the time of year, it is a lifetime commitment, so practice “Planned Pet Parenthood”—adding to your family is not a time for surprises. The List: Why should we adopt a dog, rather than head to a pet shop? Judy Wan: Adopting helps suffering dogs and reduces the number

of street dogs. We rescue over 600 homeless animals a month, and we know there are a lot more out there waiting for help. Another problem is substandard breeding. Some breeders neglect animal welfare when they breed the dogs for sale. That’s why we encourage people to adopt a dog instead of buying one.

Sheila McClelland, Founder of Lifelong Animal Protection Charity (LAP)

The List: Where do the dogs put up for adoption come from? JW: They are mostly street animals or abandoned animals rescued

by our team, from private shelters, and the Agriculture, Fisheries

and Conservation Department (AFCD). Some are from owners who

and non-profit organization that helps animals in need across Hong Kong.

The List: Who makes a good candidates for dog adoption?

6477-1492, www.lap.org.hk

SM: What makes a person suitable for adoption is like any other

family member coming into your home and life. It’s not a stuffed toy. You have to change your lifestyle to fit the new member’s needs. That might mean coming home earlier to walk them, or even getting someone to look after the dog. JW: We assess the applicant, and check the household for its dog-

friendliness, family background, financial support and experience

in keeping pets. We also try to match the personalities of the adopter and the dog. For example, we would be careful not to let busy people adopt attention-seeking dogs. The List: What should we consider before adopting? JW: It’s a lifelong commitment that can last for 15-18 years. And

remember that healthy dogs need financial support too: you need to spend on their vaccinations and food. Additionally, the adopter should always consider if they will get along well with the dog in terms of personality. The List: What are some practical benefits of adopting? SM: Animals from reputable adoption agencies are health-checked,

neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped—it’s all done. This is not usually the service you get from breeders and pet shops. In fact, adopted animals are likely to be healthier, as they are already treated against heartworm or tick fever—common dog illnesses and diseases in Hong Kong. The List: Roughly how much would it cost us to adopt? SM: The adoption fee is $1,500 to cover medical costs, such as

desexing and blood tests, as well as heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. We also cover vaccinations up until adoption. Our

training classes have four participants at a time, and cost $2,400 for five sessions. The last session is private to address individual issues. The List: So, we’ve got the dog home, now what? SM: It’s important to give your animal

security and safety, and you can do that by giving them a routine, and a space which is theirs alone. This allows them to know what the boundaries are, and feel safe and secure. It’s also vital to maintain patience with your animal when they are getting used to a new home, as you and your animal grow closer and bond together. Be calm and patient with your new family member; help your new friend through this potentially scary time. 16

who want to be on our foster list. The length of fostering is up to the foster family, but ideally it would be until the dog or cat finds a lifelong home. We also often need short-term fosters to step in during holidays when people travel. Apart from love and care, foster families also

Hong Kong Alley Cats Watch HKACW was founded in 1997 as a private venture intended to help the

city’s abandoned cats and kittens, but eventually became a society in 2003 so that it could expand its operation. As well as finding homes for abandoned kitties, the society also traps, neuters and then releases street cats back into the wild. Hong Kong Animal Adoption Centre The Hong Kong Animal Adoption Centre is an independent charity dedicated to bettering the lives of Hong Kong’s homeless animals. It collects, provides medical care for, and houses stray animals until they are adopted by a loving home. Her difficult recovery, where she had an amputation and nearly died, touched the hearts of many. She received more than $160,000 in donations for her medical fees. She now lives happily in her adoptive home.

Before you leave, be sure to pick up a kitty-themed souvenir from the shop. Flat D-E, 3/F, Po Ming Building, Fu Ming St., Causeway Bay, 2710-9953

Dear Mr. Know-It-All, What are those glistening squashed birds I see hanging up in the market? How on earth do you eat them? – Ducked If I Know Ah, the venerable Chinese pressed preserved duck, or 臘鴨 (lap ap): a winter specialty that’s mostly fallen out of favor in a healthier world. You’ll see them hanging up in the colder months, alongside the more common preserved pork and liver sausages. This isn’t the pressed duck of fine French cuisine that’s also known as canard au sang, “duck in blood.” For that recipe, a duck is strangled (to retain the blood inside the

duck, of course) and roasted. Then the bird is carved and the carcass goes into an ornate press, which compresses the blood and marrow into a thick, rich sauce. And they say only Hongkongers will eat anything at all. So, what goes into making a Chinese preserved duck? Time, mostly. The duck is partially deboned, seasoned with spices and wine, salted, and then pressed flat by hand. After that it’s skewered and air-dried for a few days. Simple enough, but the salt, the fat and the drying all combine to keep the meat from spoiling. But is it delicious? Absolutely, and it’s incredibly easy to cook. Try it yourself: Prep a serving of rice in a rice cooker and put a piece of the duck on top. As the rice cooks, the duck steams and the flavor-packed fat renders out of the bird, soaking into the rice beneath. When the rice is done, take out the duck, chop it up and serve with your oily, fragrant rice. You might want some vegetables to go with it: It’s not exactly on the healthiest end of the Cantonese cuisine spectrum. But for a comforting, warming winter dish, lap ap is hard to beat.

Happy New Year everyone! New year, new column and 5 New Year resolutions for Hong Kong renters. Finding and keeping your rental property in this over-crowded city can be challenging. Here are my five New Year’s property resolutions, which should get you out of your rental blues.

1. Be a good tenant Nothing is more important than keeping a good relationship between you and your landlord. The three golden rules to abide by are: • Pay your rent on time • Be a good neighbour • Treat your rental home like you own it

2. Fix it up There’s always that one thing you put off having fixed. Make January the month you speak with your landlord about any outstanding issues. If you are following rule #1 then this should be easy!

3. Create more space If you are bursting at the seams but don’t have the budget to move (let’s face it, this is an all too familiar HK problem) it might be an idea to have a clear out. Get rid of the clutter you don’t need and create more space – a perfect solution.

4. Spruce up your apartment When you’re renting you might be reluctant to spend a lot of money decorating, but there a are a few simple things that you can do to make your place more homely. Just adding a few plants and hanging different pictures can brighten and personalise your environment.

5. Make your move Sometimes you just know it’s the right time to move on. So if in 2015 you are planning to find a new place, my one tip to find the right place would be to find an agent that understands what you are looking for and stick with them. Most HK agents can all access the same property. If you love where you are living now then re-read point 1! Looking for a new place or have any questions about Hong Kong property? Get in touch and Ask Stella.
