TREAT YO’ SELF Can you believe we’ve got less than halfway to go to the end of 2016? You’ve worked hard in the first six months, and you’ve earned a good old R&R session—which is why we’ve designated this month’s issue to be all about pampering, with endless ways for you to kick up your feet and relax. In our cover story (p.18), we’ve rounded up the quirkiest therapies in town for you to try something new, from oxygen facials to snail extract masks. If you’re more a massage and facial type of gal, check out our tried-and-tested favorite spa treatments (p.26) around town, whether it’s a lovey dovey

couple’s spa or a quick fix at a wax and threading salon. We’ve also uncovered the best nail art (p.34) and foot massage (p.36) parlors in town, on top of hair salons (p.38). Finally, if that’s not enough to iron out your everyday stresses, maybe it’s time for a wellness retreat (p. 42)—we’ve got hardcore, results-driven stays to easy holidays full of lounging and beauty therapies. Either way, you’ll return to work looking your best. At the end of all this indulging, we hope you have a fruitful and stress-free summer, ready to enjoy the ride for the rest of 2016.

DATE NIGHT

HOT DATES Couples’ night out

Date-worthy Desserts The only problem with ordering dessert at the end of a meal is not knowing which one to choose… a dilemma that can be rectified at new cocktail and dessert bar Jerry Maguire where you’re encouraged to sate your sweet tooth with an onslaught of sugary concoctions and syrupy beverages that taste as good as they look. The next time you’re planning a date night, skip dinner and head straight to the best part of the night here, where you can spoon over the Choco Late— a chocolate lava pudding with Grand Marnier vanilla gelato and Nutella soil—and the artful Cheesecake Crunch (pictured) with hazelnut Baileys cheesecake and dark chocolate frozen foam. To wash it down, don’t miss the Alice The Wonderland cocktail—an ethereal Instaworthy creation with Havana 3-year rum, elderflower syrup, mint, pineapple juice and a ball of spun sugar. G/F, 23 Lan Fong Rd., Causeway Bay, 2881-5008, jerrymaguire.hk.

LOOKBOOK Hong Kong-based online fashion retailer Grana is all about timeless essentials made from the world’s best fabrics, sold at affordable prices. Founder Luke Grana started his label in Hong Kong in 2014 with only a batch of 2,000 t-shirts in a small 500 sq. ft. warehouse—which all sold out in two weeks. He sits down with The List’s Kate Lok to share the basics to his stylish success. Grana.com

1 Grana Pima pocket crew tee in black

3 Warby Parker Wilkie Optics glasses

Everybody needs a good t-shirt. It’s timeless, easy to wear—an absolute wardrobe must-have. These t-shirts were the first products I ever sold on our website. They are also what inspired me to start Grana. I was visiting my brother in Peru when I came across the superior quality of Peruvian Pima cotton. I was highly impressed by the soft feel and durability of the fabric.

Warby Parker has done disruption in the eyewear industry in an amazing way since they launched in 2010—they’re an inspiration for Grana as well in the direct-to-consumer e-commerce model. I picked up these frames when visiting their flagship headquarters in New York.

2 Zespa ZSP4 sneakers I’ve been wearing shoes from this brand for a while. These sneakers are made with French leather, and they are of amazing quality.

4 Omega Seamaster watch I wear this watch every single day. Apart from being a stylish everyday accessory, it is also a gift from my Dad before I left Australia for Hong Kong to start my business. It’s kind of like my lucky charm and holds a special place in my heart.

5 Grana Japanese denim jeans, extra slim dark wash I consider myself a minimalist when it comes to fashion, I don’t wear expensive big branded items. When it comes to choosing items for my closet, quality fabric and having a modern fit are the most important criteria I look for. A good pair of jeans is any wardrobe essential: it goes a long way and makes it so much easier to style outfits.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS Your guide to looking fit and fabulous TRIED & TESTED

Surfset Hong Kong The Basics: Want to get a hot surfer’s bod but worried about all

that pesky water? Growing in popularity in the last couple of years, Surfset—a fitness routine designed based on the athletic benefits of catching waves—has had a home at Hanuman Thai Boxing and Fitness in Hung Hom since late last year. Workouts are done on a Surfset machine: a surfboard placed on a base of three rubber balls to give you the feeling of being out on the water, allowing you to work on balance as well as build core strength. Three small-group workouts are offered at Surfset: “Balance,” meant for beginners, focuses on yoga-like stretches for flexibility and core work. For the more hardcore, “Build” encompasses bodyweight and resistance circuit training to help you get shredded. “Burn” classes are a mix of both: with high intensity intervals to help burn fat and moves to build core strength. The Experience: I recently went for a trial Balance class. Despite knowing my way around a stand-up paddle board, trying not to shake on the board was a huge challenge in the first half of the class, which gave me fewer reps of the squats and jumps that gym managing director and instructor Cherilyn Chow had us do. It’s impossible to follow along unless you grasp how to balance on your board. Throughout the workout, plenty of squats and lunges are involved in Balance, as well as a difficult burpee-like movement where you rapidly jump onto your board, stand and stretch upwards, and jump off again. A slow cool down stretch really pushes your flexibility with twists on yoga poses. The Takeaway: Though the first half of the class is difficult to get into,

the usage of the board really forces you to focus on form and to really push to utilize every muscle. Once you get the hang of the board, the moves are easy enough to follow for fitness beginners, and it’s ultimately a sweaty and effective workout. Evelyn Lok $100 for first time trial, $250 single class, $1,050 for five classes. Unit A, 13/F, Kaiser Estate, Phase 1, 41 Man Yue St., Hung Hom, 2362-3665, surfset.hk

Board of Yoga Speaking of stand-up paddleboard, Hong Kong’s SUP Yoga classes are back, with a special Acro yoga event with guest teacher David Ho on August 6 (3-5:30pm). If you’re already comfortable flying around in partner yoga exercises on land, you may want to give it a try on the water for an added edge. New to the whole thing? You might want to check into a regular SUP Yoga class first... Regular SUP Yoga dates: Jul 24, Aug 7, 14, 10-11:30am; Aug 20, 27, 2:30-4pm. $500 includes board rental, from SUPyogahongkong@gmail.com. WILD TREATS We scour the city for the quirkiest treatments and products that can make you look your best. By The List Staff

Single session $900 ($550-810 with membership). Cryofacials and localized cryotherapy also available. 10/F, Lee Theatre Plaza, 99 Percival St., Causeway Bay, 2446-6163, polaris-wellness.com

Frozen in Time Sci-fi movies have shown us people can get cryogenically frozen to wake up decades later and still retain their same youthful self. While real life hasn’t exactly caught up to that point yet (though not for lack of trying), you can seek out the health and beauty benefits of the cold at Hong Kong’s first and only cryotherapy center, Polaris Wellness, which uses the power of sub-zero temperatures in its treatments and facials. It’s also popular with athletes such as Floyd Mayweather and Kobe Bryant who use cryotherapy to recover faster after injuries. The List recently got to try a full body treatment, which entails you standing for three minutes, naked, in a -130 °C nitrogen gas fridge. As the cold air enters the full body chamber—with your head sticking out—you quickly realize it’s no mere shopping mall chill, but an intense piercing cold that develops into sharp pins and needles all over the body.Thank goodness for the uplifting therapist, who took our mind off the excruciating

three minutes. The best feeling is when you hobble out of the machine to thaw and your blood circulation rapidly increases to warm yourself and your body creates feel-good endorphins and extra collagen for a smoother, firmer appearance. Our takeaway? The feeling that you’ve conquered an ice cap definitely gets addictive...

It’s 9am and you're late for work. Wouldn't you wish you didn't have to waste another ten minutes slapping on a full face of primer, concealer, foundation? What if you could wake up with flawless, foundation-ready skin? Huge in the cosmetic mecca that is South Korea, semi-permanent foundation has been making waves in recent years, and the trend has recently been imported through Hong Kong’s Felle Beau beauty salon. It works like a tattoo, using an “Auto Micro-needle Therapy System” (AMTS) technique to inject skin-color-matching pigments as well as collagen under the surface of skin. It sounds frightening, but is apparently painless. The color is only deposited in the sebaceous layer between the epidermis and dermis, so it naturally fades away after a certain period of time—three treatments ($2,380) can last for about four to six months. Depending on your natural skin tone, your desired brightness, and the number of treatments you receive, the results and duration of your newfound flawless skin will vary.

There have been some pretty wacky beauty ingredients that have popped up over the past few years, but perhaps none so far-fetched as products made with snail and snake venom. All the rage in Korea, there’s something about snail slime that seems to do wonders for the face, with snail extract linked to stimulating the formation of collagen and elastin for firmer, younger-looking skin. As for snake venom, the poisonous-sounding but completely harmless product has become a popular antidote for wrinkles, meant to ‘stun’ the skin in the same way a real snake bite would do. More scientifically, amino acids in the venom work to block nerve signals and thus stop muscles from contracting, stopping wrinkles from forming in the same way botox would. But don’t take our word for it—pick up a packet of snail extract face masks or snake venom cream at Sasa or Korean cosmetics store Tony Moly.

In the Air Tonight While oxygen bars and flavored oxygen rose as a trend in the midnoughties, Hong Kong spa stalwart Spa Beaute Par Zai has been pumping their most faithful clients an extra concentrated type of oxygen for therapeutic purposes via its Oxy Essential treatment for the last 15 years—and the people who love it, love it a lot. Combining the benefits of a higher oxygen content than the outside air, and the soothing effects of aromatherapy, the Oxy Essential boasts benefits ranging from a cure for a hangover to shinier hair. Some go for a full 40 minutes when they need to unwind, some take a weekly session, and some even take a quick hit of flavored air every day. The owner,

Nigar Qureshi, has been a practicing aromatherapist for twenty years (as well as a professional makeup artist), takes five minutes every day. The claim is that the intake of more oxygen (the air in our atmosphere is about 21% oxygen; the usual non-medical oxygen concentrator produces 40% oxygen) helps remove toxins from the bloodstream, thus strengthening one’s immune system, clearing the complexion, easing migraines and hangovers, and leaving you refreshed. As for us? After 40 minutes huffing peppermint-laced oxygen, the session left us feeling relaxed—although that might have been from the mellowing effects of peppermint and the time spent reclined in a spa bed rather than the oxygen itself.

ANNA WONG

“We want to help women in terms of business leadership and entrepreneurship” Anna Wong is the founder of

the Hong Kong-based Female Entrepreneurs Worldwide (FEW), an organization aimed at empowering businesswomen. Hot off the heels of a successful Female Entrepreneurs Day conference, she talks with Jack McCormack about her background and what it means to be a female entrepreneur in Hong Kong.

I’m currently working on a couple of projects aside from FEW including a public relations business, and a company that launched in America last year. The public relations industry is

very male-dominated. When people think of communications or public relations, people think about a female industry. But when it comes to higher management, it’s all men.

We knew we wanted to bring businesswomen together to talk about business and share results.

We are more like a platform; we want to help women in terms of business leadership and entrepreneurship.

In Hong Kong, women are quite independent; they have their personal and professional goals.

Usually it’s difficult for people to

personally and professionally. And we hope to help them grow their business.

When I wanted to start my business,

My friend in the UK is a top technology developer and had to buy materials in China. Every time she called her Chinese manufacturer she would say hello, and since the manufacturer didn’t speak English, he would just hang up.

I didn’t see much of a support group in Hong Kong. In America you see a growing number of these support groups for businesswomen.

Through our platform she could be properly connected to her manufacturer. This is how our platform can help to grow businesses.

I thought to myself, why not just start

Oriental Spa at The REVIEWED Landmark Mandarin Oriental is no ordinary spa experience: They’ve got vitality pools, herbal saunas, Hammam steam rooms, and more unique splash rooms, and of course, you’re treated to the five-star hotel service expected of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental. We recently tried the new 60-minute Natura Bissé Citrus Boost facial, which uses products from the Spanish spa brand that are packed with Vitamin C, to help wake up tired skin and achieve a brighter, more even complexion. It starts with a brief aromatherapy exercise to relax you from your fingertips to your toes, after which your face is cleansed, and a mild fruit-based peel is applied to gently exfoliate. During this, you’ll get treated to a relaxing head and scalp massage. An incredibly moisturizing algae-based soft mask is then applied, and as you wait for it to set, your therapist rubs down your shoulders and arms, by which you’re more than likely to have blissfully drifted off to sleep. These are extra precarious months for any REVIEWED Hongkonger’s complexion: outside, pollution bonds with the humidity, which clings to your face, producing a veritable dermatological layer of sweat and smog, while inside, the constant pumping of air conditioning dries up the skin, Sahara Desert-style. Ever wake up with your skin somehow feeling both dry and greasy? Like every day? Maybe it’s time for a Face Spa facial. Popular for their more clinical aesthetic treatments like Botox, chemical peels and cosmetic fillers, their therapeutic facials also make a world of a difference: The Face Spa’s Eminence facial is a nourishing, deep-cleaning journey to radiant skin. Tailored to the unique complexions of the client, the facial invariably involves three cleanses with products from the organic Hungarian line Eminence, microdermabrasion, followed by an extraction to remove every last blackhead and close up those pores, several rounds of face and shoulder massage, a specially blended mask and wrap, and more goodies. The treatment lasts two hours, and the results are glowing, supple skin, ready to do battle with the smoggy and humid Hong Kong summer. To boost up your skincare regime between sessions, take a look at The Face Spa’s own line of products, specially formulated by Dr. Tim. The Eminence Facial, $1080. Their signature 80-minute Synaesthesia ($2,000), a full body massage which aims to feed all your five senses, is definitely a winner. The spa designers throw in a fun element by asking you to pick a word from a chalkboard—with words like “confidence” and “energised” scribbled all over it—to state what you would like to achieve, and the treatment will slightly differ according to the word you choose. Feel your tension lift from your body as the therapist kneads your arms, back and feet with a buttery massage bar. Luxe Nail & Beauty

NEWLY REVIEWED

A stalwart in the mani scene in Hong Kong, The Nail Library grew from indie high-end salon in Sheung Wan to being known for its exclusive collaboration with The Upper House. It now calls Wo On Lane in Central its home with a flagship opened earlier this year. Expect top notch service from the salon’s roster of talented nail artists, and as the name suggests, the largest collection of premium and eco-friendly “five-free” polishes (safe for pregnant ladies and kids) for you to choose from in Hong Kong—touting brands such as Christian Louboutin, Tom Ford or French brand Kure Bazaar. 1/F, 10-12 Wo On Lane, Central, 2618-8623

Looking for a quick and fast nail service complete with elaborate designs? Look no further than Luxe. Located on the second floor of a Tsim Sha Tsui tong lau, the interior is decorated in a cute, princessy style, perfect for any girly girl. It may get cluttered as it gets busier throughout the evening, with technicians painting away at six stations. But you’ll hardly notice, as you sit back with eyes glued to the TV playing Hollywood blockbusters or Asian chick dramas as your expert manicurist buffs away. Luxe is great at staying on trend, currently offering jelly pastel colors for summer, Koreanstyle geometric designs, as well as pressed flower manicures which are all over the runways this season—we loved our combination of pressed floral nails and marble manicures on our last visit, though ladies who dislike thick gel manis may want to stay away from this style as it requires a thicker layer of top coat to keep the real dried flowers in place. Soft gels for first-timers start at $328, and get cheaper if you join a membership package. 2/F, Long Wah Building, 21A Lock Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2311-8188, luxebeauty.com.hk

Nail 88 If a no-frills mani/pedi is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with Nail88. While its interiors may be far from glamorous, the manicurists at Nail88 get the job done quickly and affordably: Regular polish manicures are $48 and pedicures go for $98, and you’ll be in and out within 30 minutes. A soak off gel manicure is only $148, and any nail art is only $10 a pop for each finger. Various branches, including Shop G24-25, Welland Building, 368 Queen’s Rd. Central, Sheung Wan, 2851-6711.

HEARTS AND SOLES We speak to Albin Brion, resident podiatrist at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s Oriental Spa, who tells us about their tailor-made insole service, the BGA Insoles. The List: Why would someone need tailor-made insoles? Albin Brion: We spend about half of our lives sleeping and the other half standing, so you should never neglect the mattress, and your pair of shoes. Our insoles guide the foot to work in the proper way, with a b-shape design: The back is like a little cocoon to keep the heel in place, so that the skin doesn’t chafe away, especially helping women with calluses and cracks on the heel. We’re unique, because we are the only place which can have your insoles ready within an hour and a half. Normally other podiatrists take about two weeks, because they need to send the mold to a factory. The List: How does it help alleviate foot problems? AB: The definition of comfort is cushioning plus stability. The reason why you have calluses, corns or dead skin is because you have too much pressure on one part. We want to distribute the body weight on a greater surface—reduce the overall pressure and the dead skin will disappear on its own.

The List: Are they useful for kids too? AB: Children’s bones grow faster than the muscles. The insoles can help to correct the angle of the feet slightly and we want to encourage a healthy posture. We can help from ages 7-15. After the bones are already developed, we can only assist a little. The List: What kind of problems can the insoles help alleviate that regular massage can't? AB: Foot massage is good for relaxing, blood flow, joint mobility, but it won’t change the posture of your body. Wearing insoles gives more of a long term benefit. Suddenly your feet are straight, which can realign your knee, change your hip, and all these muscles that were a little tight— suddenly you don’t need to go to a massage anymore! The BGA Insoles are available for smart and sports shoes. Book a 30-minute consultation by calling The Oriental Spa at 2132-0011 or visit mandarinoriental.com/landmark/spa

TAKE FIVE: SUMMER HAIR TIPS Celebrity Stylist David Malo at Capelli Hair Salon in Repulse Bay has helped celebs such as Mariah Carey and Khloe Kardashian achieve their iconic locks. Want gorgeous hair like theirs? He gives us five tips to ease the frizz and keep our hair looking luscious in sticky Hong Kong summers. capelli.hk

• Keratin treatments: With the sole purpose to de-frizz, there are now many different brands you can use for Keratin treatments. Also known as a semi-permanent smoothing treatment, it allows you to still have bounce and wear curls, just without the frizz. The results can last up to 12 weeks, so it's perfect if you only want to get through the worst of the heat. It’s also safe with color. • Hair products: It's definitely a good start to use the right shampoo and conditioner and styling products. Jennifer Aniston's very own line, Living Proof, is the ultimate home care brand, with a range simply called “Anti frizz.” These products are designed to hydrate your hair and they also contain humidity blockers making your hair shine for longer. Very popular this summer.

• Styling tools: All year round, it's always good to utilize styling tools such as straightening stylers, or curling tongs to complete or add variations to your look. But in summer, they also help maintain smoothness for a longer time. • Fresh cuts: Summer is also a good time if you've been thinking about a change, to go for something shorter. Get that heavy hair off your neck and opt for a shorter look. Mid length bobs that have a softer edge with a little more texture are also a popular summer haircut. • Less frequent washes: It's a good idea if you can, to avoid washing your hair daily. This will just allow the natural oils to soften out and control frizz.

A series of stories, recommendations and tips on Hong Kong from people in the know. Explore our city based on the travel experiences that interest you and get itineraries for off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods.

Spotlight on: Tuen Mun In Hong Kong’s westerly New Territories, the district of Tuen Mun owes its early settlements to abundant natural resources. Small villages and eventually a market town built up around the waterfront, once the livelihood of the Tanka (boat dwelling) fishermen. Although much of the area is now residential, there’s a host of natural beauty waiting to be explored. Hike to Castle Peak Basin, with great views over the territory.

Chinese White Dolphin Lookout

Natural Heritage Hong Kong may be a buzzing urban metropolis, but its littleknown secret is that some 40 percent of the territory is formed of country parks and nature reserves. Step outside of downtown and you’ll discover steeple-top mountain chains, remote hiking trails, rugged coastlines and wild beaches. Plus, with more marine diversity than the Caribbean and one-third of the total bird species in China, you’ll soon want to spend all your precious time outdoors. Rocky Beginnings The most prominent protected nature reserve is the Hong Kong Global Geopark of China, in northeasterly Sai Kung. One of the prettiest of these areas is Yan Chau Tong Marine Park: a happy result of violent volcanic eruptions some 180 million years ago. With little erosion, it’s worth a visit to explore the rocky headlands and cliffs surrounded by picturesque bays and turquoise waters. Under the Sea To discover what lies beneath Hong Kong’s calm waters, escape to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park (Hoi Ha literally translates to “under the sea”), a sheltered bay that’s famous for its coral collection. You might be able to spot more than 60 species of hard coral just from a clear spot on the surface, or dive down further to happen upon colorful soft coral and more than 120 species of fish. Feeling Reserved Keep your feet on dry land at the renowned Hong Kong Wetland Park, some 60 hectares of wetland reserve with specially designed habitats for its water bird species. The large visitor center holds regular themed exhibitions, plus you can meet the salt water crocodile “Pui Pui.” Mai Po Nature Reserve is another must-visit wetlands that supports thousands of birds during migratory season.

View over Tuen Mun

Go Dolphin Spotting Tuen Mun is also home to Tai Lam Country Park, Hong Kong’s second largest. Further west lies the village of Lung Kwu Tan, which with its views out to sea is a popular spot for spotting the Chinese white dolphin that cruises the South China coastline. Take a walk up to Chinese White Dolphin Lookout with binoculars and you may be in luck! Treason and Plot For an intriguing taste of history, Hung Lau, an early 20th century Grade I historic building set in Chung Shan Park is where legend has it that Chinese revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen plotted his

uprising. Another building of historical significance is Tsing Shan Monastery, one of the three oldest temples in Hong Kong, dating back to 1464. Food and Flea Markets With such strong ties to the land and sea, there’s ample fresh local produce to be had in Tuen Mun, with the aptly named Farmer Restaurant offering vegetarian Cantonese fare. Alternatively, opt for flavorsome meat dishes at Lam Tei’s renowned Red Season Aroma Restaurant. Head online to www.DiscoverHongKong.com/ InsidersGuide to create your personalized itinerary for Tuen Mun.

Dedicated to local fresh ingredients only, Spa Alila is listed as one of the “Must Spa” experiences in Bali by the Bali Bible this year. With the Yoga Massage treatment, you can experience the combination of these two relaxing words, in which the therapist presses on your acupuncture points and stretches your muscles in yoga postures in order to sustain the balance of your inner elements. Bring back the healthy glow to your skin with the 150-minute Beauty and Balance Signature Treatment, which uses the the triplet of cocoa, coffee and coconut to give you a deep cleansing and moisturizing makeover.

If frittering away your time in a sun-drenched beach sounds too mundane, we can assure you that The Temple House in Chengdu is quite a different genre of luxury hotel in China. Stripped of any lavish decorations, the hotel instead weaves simplistic modern architectural aesthetics into the historical heritage in a city full of stories. Its newest spa, Mi Xun Spa, is erected where the mulberry garden of the Daci Temple once sat, retaining much of the original Western-Sichuan architecture. Each therapy in the signature series, Mi Xun Autographs, is designed to cater to a particular wellness goal. KNOW & TEL The Siam If “om”ing away your holiday proves too dull, bring some spice into your detox at The Siam, an urban retreat against a culturally rich neighborhood of temples and palace. Become the next Tony Jaa at the resort’s chic black-and-white boxing ring, which holds muay Thai boxing sessions taught by Olympic trainer Kru Yim. Renowned as the “art of the eight limbs,” muay Thai makes sure every inch of your body is trained with its intense punches, knee strikes and elbows. When you’re exhausted from all the kicking and grappling, the Opium Spa by Sodashi is here to help you unwind with its signature 90-minute Thai Herbal Compress massage. The masseur’s rhythmic hot compresses, together with aromatic herbs and spices, boost blood circulation and relieve your strained muscles. And if all these don’t already sound exciting enough, getting inked at the Sak Yant tattoo studio (starts from $6,595) will definitely spice things up. Tracing back to ancient Cambodia, the sacred Sak Yant tattoos, which often feature intricate geometric symbols of Buddhist prayers, are said to possess magical powers that could protect or bless its wearer.

Cheval Blanc Randheli Stray from the tourist-packed beaches of Maldives and wander off the beaten path at Cheval Blanc Randheli in the virginal Noonu Atoll, a heaven of bliss located at a 40-minute seaplane ride from the city of Malé. Set out on a one, three or five-day Wellness Journey ($3,802, $7,681 and $15,440 respectively) for a physical and mental restoration with daily spa rituals at Cheval Blanc Spa, or in the privacy of your own villa. Foot reflexology therapy, which enhances your whole-body lymphatic circulation from your soles, is just the elixir for ladies who wear heels every day. After your breather at the spa, give those worn out limbs a stretch in the Sunrise Yoga classes, or break out from your sedentary lifestyle with core muscle training in a few Pilates sessions. No treatment is complete without the bespoke culinary cures from the maison’s chefs, who can cook up just any low-sodium or vegan meal program according to your dietary needs. The Datai Langkawi From its architecture to a wildlife ambience of rainforests and mangroves, to the fusion of homegrown spices and herbs into its dishes, “nature” seems to be the heart of The Datai Langkawi, a resort lying on the mysterious Langkawi Island. Answer your “call of nature” with one of their nature excursions like the UNESCO Geopark Cruise, where you will burrow through limestone hills to meet kingfishers and fiddler crabs. Go on a guided rainforest trekking tour for a peek into the thriving fauna and flora at the very core of this enigmatic jungle. If you’re more of a water person, the Kayak and Swimming Adventure will give you a taste of rowing along the tides of Kubang Badak River. After a day of blazing sunlight, cool down at the Datai Spa wrapped in an ambrosial rainforest. Relax as the masseurs hands move according to the cicadas hums in the background during their signature Indulgent Oriental Rituals (starting at $1,652). MRS. KNOW-IT-ALL

The List’s very own mom-in-the-know shares her Hong Kong tips and tricks with readers.

Dear Mrs. KIA,

Do you know where they sell Goosebumps books or any books by R.L. Stine in HK? They are very popular in the US, but how about in Hong Kong?—Goosebump Ginny

Ever since Hongkongers got their hands on Kindles and ebook readers, spending a day at the bookstore is unfortunately not a popular pastime anymore. But when you’re searching for something nostalgic or a collectible, the right bookstores in town are definitely worth a browse. You can head to your nearest Bookazine (various branches including Shop 309, Prince’s Building, 10 Chater Rd., Central, 2522-1785, bookazine.com.hk), which stocks over 900 magazine titles and more than 20,000 books, and also hosts plenty of kids’ reading events. However, the original Goosebumps series may be difficult to find in mainstream bookstores, seeing as the last re-print of the series was in 2011. You’ll want to scour the city’s range of secondhand bookstores instead. Perhaps the best known is Flow Bookshop, based in Central (Room 204, Lyndhurst Building, 29 Lyndhurst Terrace, 2964-9483, flowbooks.net), which has sold hundreds of thousands of secondhand books, magazines, CDs and DVDs to Hongkongers since it opened in 1997. Too lazy to trek to its upstairs shop space? An alternative is Booksmart (Flat 212, 11/F, Glorious Commercial Building (浩 榮商業大廈), 210-212 Des Voeux Rd. West, Sai Ying Pun, 26205035, booksmarthk.com), which has its catalogue of new and used books conveniently placed online for you to search. You can opt for delivery straight to your home, for an additional fee. If you’re looking for a particular title, you can email the details directly to the shopkeepers (info@booksmarthk.com) who will be able to zero in on its whereabouts in Hong Kong, and even bring it to you. While you’re at it, there are plenty more awesome bookstores to browse all around the city, if you want to while away an afternoon soaking up the knowledge hidden in the aisles. Do you happen to be a design fiend? Hit up Basheer in Causeway Bay (1/F, Flat A, Island Building, 439-441 Hennessy Rd., Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, 2126-7533, basheer.com.hk).

Open since 1985, it’s a mecca for magazines and coffee table tomes covering fashion and architecture, graphic and product design. Art lovers, or shall we call you hipsters, who are looking for something more specific may want to browse Clockwork Cat (5/F, Wang Kwong Industrial Building, 45 Hung To Rd., Kwun Tong, facebook.com/clockworkcathk), a retailer of books, music albums and select designer merchandise. It also hosts regular private gigs, screenings and wine tastings for you to meet like-minded souls. For a similar vibe, Kubrick (Shop H2, Prosperous Garden, 3 Public Square St., Yau Ma Tei, 2384-8929), housed at the Broadway Cinematheque in Yau Ma Tei, is a perfect hideaway for the keen arthouse fan. It’s packed to the rafters with independent books, zines and philosophical reads as well as titles about film, photography, poetry and travel. Equipped with a great café, this is one of our favorites in the Know-It-All household for a movie, a browse and a leisurely meal.

HIDDEN GEMS

KAMIKAZE CAVES Adventure awaits you in Lamma Island if you visit the Kamikaze Caves. Located along the coast of Sok Kwu Wan, it is said that the Japanese used the area as a naval port during their occupation of Hong Kong in WWII. These caves were made for a plan to hide kamikaze speedboats for deploying suicidal attacks on the Allies warships. However, the war ended before the plan was carried out. Now, they attract daring tourists who don’t mind getting down and dirty when it counts. Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island, Outlying Islands
