The List Christmas Party Friday, December 13, 2013

Thanks for Com ng!

Last month, The List celebrated the holidays with a troupe of readers on our very own office terrace! The crowd enjoyed big fat steak sandwiches, crispy fish and chips, and cheesecake pops from the friendly chefs of Butchers Club, and washed it all down with drinks sponsored by Jose Cuervo, Drop and Piadina. A lucky few snagged prizes from The Peninsula spa, Fish and Meat, Flawless, Sense of Touch and Joy Vino, while everyone got to take home a goody bag packed with vouchers and sample products from Boots, Nude and Sense of Touch. Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate the holiday in style! Stay tuned for more news on our monthly happy hours as 2014 gets into full swing. Keen to attend an upcoming event? See what’s on next at thelist.com.hk/guestlist, follow us on Twitter (TheList_HK) and like us on Facebook to stay in the loop!

Dopper Water Bottle It’s a really cool water bottle that’s part of a social enterprise. The design is actually award-winning, because it’s a bottle and cup in one—plus 10 percent of the proceeds go towards increasing the availability of clean water and reducing waste.

John Hardy Earrings What’s awesome about these earrings is that they’re part of John Hardy’s Bamboo Collection. For every piece of jewelry sold from, the company plants bamboo to offset the making of the jewelry. And on the back of the earring, they inscribe how much bamboo was planted.

These were given to me by my best friend in 2010 for my birthday—and that’s the longest I’ve ever had a pair of sunglasses. I wear them all the time, and I will never lose them because my best friend gave them to me.

Canon 300 DSLR My boyfriend gave this to me when he discovered I love photography, and I have been having a lot of fun with it since. I really like experimenting with the lenses and capturing things that I can’t normally capture with a pocket camera.

Cocoa Pili Nuts I always have these on my desk—I eat them all the time; you can ask my staff. They are really healthy and delicious and buttery. You can get them at Stephen James Organics.

Blue Butterfly My little brother gave this to me for Christmas two years ago. It reminds me of home in Canada and reminds me of him; it’s just really beautiful and means a lot to me.

Keen Hiking Boots I love hiking—it’s amazing in Hong Kong. These boots feel like you’re hiking on clouds: the brand actually supports Hong Kong Cleanup, and they’re perfect for all kinds of terrain.

Digit drama Dear Mr. Know-It-All, Auspicious numbers confuse me. I understand that “4” is unlucky and “8” is good news: but is that all there is to it? – Number Wang It’s simple, Number Wang. Auspicious numbers have nothing to do with numerology at all. In fact, it’s all to do with homophones. What Cantonese numbers sound like is what’s most important. Here are a few worth knowing: 3: Lucky. Sounds like “birth,” or “life.” 4: Unlucky. Sounds like “death.” Best expressed in older buildings that lack a fourth floor, or indeed, any floor numbers containing “4” at all.

5: Unlucky. Sounds like “Not.” Although consequently “54” becomes “not-death”—i.e. it’s lucky. 6: Both. Sounds both like the words for “blessing” and also for “fall.” 7: Unlucky. Means stupid or cringe-worthy. But this one’s lucky in Putonghua, where it sounds like “together.” 8: Jackpot. Sounds like “prosperity” and the numeral looks like the character for “happiness.” This, of course, is why buildings such as the IFC have 88 floors. Even smaller buildings, like the one at 39 Conduit Rd., for example, often label their top floor 88, even if it’s only the 46th story in real life. This can all get more complicated when you start combining numbers. So: “9413” means “nine deaths, one life”—i.e. 90 percent chance of death, 10 percent chance of survival. “1314” sounds like “one life, one lifetime”—i.e. forever. This gets particularly interesting when you get multilingual: in Putonghua “521” sounds like “I love you.” So, if a Pearl River Delta dweller chases you down the street shouting “5211314!”, be comforted. They’re not some kind of number-savant. They’re just shouting, in the most efficient way they know how: “I love you forever!” Mathematics: the most perfect language of all.

Nan Lian Garden

Photo: Kay Yuen

WHY WE LIKE IT Situated near the Diamond Hill MTR station in Kowloon, Nan Lian is a tranquil landscape garden that’s perfect for a quiet afternoon. The 3.5-hectare park, maintained by the nearby Chi Lin Nunnery, was designed in the classical style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), which means there are carefully placed rocks, lush plants, timber structures and water features. Opened to the public in 2006 as a place for quiet reflection, 50

Nan Lian Garden offers respite from city life and a glimpse into ancient Chinese culture. Should all that pondering make you work up an appetite, there’s also a food kiosk, vegetarian restaurant and tea house on site.

GETTING THERE Take Kwun Tong MTR line to Diamond Hill station and use exit C2. Nan Lian Garden is across from the station. Open daily from 7am to 9pm. Free admission.
