Lookbook MY FAVORITE THINGS

$12 PEN This is such an amazing local thing. I bought this pen in a cheap stationery store but absolutely love it, despite its price. I also love that it has a Victorian-style crown with a pearl on it. It’s a great conversation starter, and I am always using it in meetings to cheer myself up.

PUREARTH RARE PEACH FACE OIL

Priscilla I’Anson Fashion stylist and creative consultant, Priscilla I’Anson has made a name for herself in Hong Kong’s rapidly growing fashion industry. She sits down with Anya Beniac to talk about her current style favorites. Product shots by Chris Luk. Portrait by Boris Burgess. Email: priscillaianson@gmail.com Instagram: @priscillaianson

The lady who started this brand, Kavita, works with NGOs in the Himalayan mountains and empowers women by giving them work. Their products are all hand-poured and are all very environmentally conscious and sustainable. I love the smell of it—funnily enough it doesn’t smell like peaches, but rather like almonds.

1987 PREMIERE CHANEL WATCH I love vintage. I collect a lot of vintage pieces, particularly accessories. I find that they are very unique which is great, as I don’t like to look the same as other people. I bought this watch in Australia as a birthday gift from myself to myself.

MISCHA CARDHOLDER This is a personalized cardholder from local designer, Mischa, who is a good friend of mine. This is my second Mischa cardholder—I used my other one so much it started to fall apart!

ELIZABETH AND JAMES SUNGLASSES

FASHIONARY MINI NEON NOTEBOOK I am a stylist, so I love how each page of this notebook contains a faint outline of a mannequin. This is really useful as it allows me to draw things for clients. I use it loads in meetings and just love the hologram effect.

12

These are my favorite sunglasses: they are classic and go well with everything I own—I am very much into gold. Also, they have a nice cateye shape, which is flattering for my round face.

VINTAGE CHANEL CLASSIC FLAP BAG I bought this bag in a small vintage boutique in Causeway Bay. It’s true vintage Chanel from the 70s. Although it is a bit dirty, I love the color and lived-in feeling of it. It is also incredibly versatile: if I hide the straps, I can immediately turn it into a clutch.

ADVERTORIAL

Amazing December in Macau –

2013 Macau Shopping Festival & Parade through Macau, Latin City Watch out HK – the much anticipated “Macau Shopping Festival” is returning to our sister SAR this Christmas season.

S

lated to run from December 1 to December 31 and stepping into the third year, the annual Macau Shopping Festival organized by the festival’s Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Macau Government Tourism Office has emerged as one of the leading tourism feats in the region. Continuing on the rewarding streak, built over the past two years, the 2013 Macau Shopping Festival is supported by businesses from all over the city, including large shopping malls and retailers, along with a variety of small and medium-size enterprises coming together to offer a range of privileges and discounts for shoppers. The 2013 Macau Shopping Festival is built on the theme “One day Shopping; One day Playing”, showcasing the multi-faceted tourist experiences of Macau and inspiring round-the-town shopping activities. It will offer local residents and visitors a month full of privileges, price reductions and free lucky draws with fabulous prizes valued at over MOP3,000,000. Adding to the festive atmosphere is the “Christmas Window-dressing Campaign” which engages retail outlets in Macau in greeting visitors with scintillating

festive decoration and offering one-ofa-kind exciting shopping experiences, thereby further contributing to the enormous economic strides achieved by the city’s retail and tourism sectors by and large. Aside from the above, the organizing committee will be launching their Macau Shopping Festival Mobile App, along with the Macau small-to-medium shops guide for easy shopping experiences like never before.

“Parade through Macau, Latin City” Want to kill two birds with one stone? Then head over to Macau on Dec 20 to celebrate the 14th anniversary of Macau’s handover to China with the “Parade through Macau, Latin City” while the shopping festival will still be in full swing. The Parade is once again held under the slogans “Peace, Love and Cultural Integration” and “An annual celebration for the entire city – VIVA!”, and this year is themed “The Rhythm of Life”, hoping to attract even more residents and tourists and inviting them to dig deep into the diverse cultural atmosphere of Macao. The opening ceremony will take place at 3.30pm in front of the worldfamous Ruins of St. Paul’s, where

a wondrous journey of revival kicks off. Artists from around the world will raise the curtain on a series of fascinating shows, spreading joy all over the city. This year’s Parade embraces performing groups from over 10 countries and regions including Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Burkina Faso, among others, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China. This extravaganza includes performances by PIA – Projectos de Intervenção Artística from Portugal, French group Les Grandes Personnes, Hong Kong Youth Marching Band, the Peruvian Teatro del Milenio, Italian Flag Wavers and Be Fantasy Bubble Arts from Taiwan. Joining them in the Parade are 50 local groups, bringing the total estimate of performers to an amazing 2,000 creative participants.

Despite having lived in Hong Kong almost all my life, I’ve never figured out why the different colors of taxis exist. I suspect they started back in the day when there were practical reasons to restrict taxis from serving certain areas. But Hong Kong is not that big and nowadays people travel everywhere! It fuels bad behavior from the taxi drivers (refusing to take you to Kowloon or NT, asking for a higher fare). I haven’t been able to find a good answer for my questioning guests. How did this taxi culture come about? On a side note, when can we start using Octopus and credit cards in taxis? I thought we were a “world-class city!” – Color Cab Quandary The answer is one of geography, CCQ. Each year, 956,000 people use taxis in Hong Kong. If you were a taxi driver who had free roam of the SAR, would you rather spend your day wandering the New Territories

for long-distance fares, or would you rather camp out in Mong Kok or Central and make short, profitmaking hops between districts? Exactly. The red (Hong Kong Island/ Kowloon), green (NT) and blue (Lantau) taxis actually exist to help keep demand satisfied in the fartherflung areas of the territory. That doesn’t explain why red taxis refuse to cross the harbor. Taxi drivers are legally bound to take you where you want to go—but they’re not bound to have the knowledge of the city that, for instance, London’s cab drivers do. So either a) they know nothing about the land beyond the sea or b) they really don’t like tunnels. About paying by Octopus. There are 18,138 taxis in Hong Kong: 15,250 red, 2,838 green and 50 blue. And of those, 500 taxis are actually fitted with Octopus card readers. It took 10 years of negotiation to agree to a trial run in 2006, but the scheme wasn’t successful: the taxis had to return to the depot daily for accounting purposes, and the scheme lapsed. Since then, the tech has improved: but takeup has been slow, because Octopus payments take a day to process. When you’re a cab driver having to pay between $600-800 daily rent on your taxi, plus fuel costs—it’s nice to have every dollar you can get, as soon as possible. So next time, don’t begrudge it when your taxi driver keeps the extra 50 cents. We’ve all gotta make rent, after all.

HIDEAWAY

Shui Tau Tsuen

WHY WE LIKE IT Shui Tau Tsuen, meaning “water’s head village,” dates back to the early 12th century, but most remaining buildings were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Passing the tiny traditional houses, you feel like you have stepped back in time. It’s pleasant just wandering around, although we recommend taking advantage of the free guided map since signs are minimal. These can be obtained at the entrance to the village inside the imposing Yi Tai Study Hall, built in the first half of the 19th century and named after the gods of literature and martial arts. The Tang Kwong U and Tang Ching Lok ancestral halls in the middle of the village were built in the early 19th century for ancestor worship. It’s worth noting the ancestors’ names listed on the altar in the inner hall and on the long boards down the side. Buildings are beautifully decorated with sculpted dragons and fish, and the Tin Hau temple on the 50

outskirts of the village contains an impressive iron bell weighing 106 kilograms. All halls are open Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 9am-1pm and from 2-5pm and there is a small cafe for refreshments.

GETTING THERE Take the MTR West Rail to Tsuen Wan West station. Cross the dual carriageway to Nina Tower (the tallest building in the area) and take bus 51 from the KMB bus terminus. Alight at the Mung Yeung School stop on Kam Tin Road. Walk north under the subway below the Kam Tin Bypass and go past Kam Tai Road. Cross over the river to Chi Ho Road and cross the small bridge spanning a stream. Turn right and then left to enter the village from the east. It should take around 15 minutes.
