editor’s letter Fresh Paint

An entire issue devoted to nails? Yeah, we admit, it’s a little overzealous, but hey—in Hong Kong’s sea of dodgy upstairs salons, a great mani-pedi deserves a big highfive. But before scampering off for a day of pampering, you may want to brush up on your manicure lingo. Turn to p.18 to learn the ins and outs of today’s more complicated services. Now that you’re well-versed in salon-speak, book an appointment stat at one of our favorite salons (p.22). And if you’re keen to throw a sparty, continue on to p.26, where we’ve listed salons and spas that offer awesome private pampering packages. Ready to DIY? Not so fast. First stock up on all of the essential manicure tools, lotions and polishes with our comprehensive list of nail supply stores (p.28), and then soak up some blogger inspiration from our top picks for YouTube channels and Pinterest boards on p.34. There’s a lot happening with talon trends these days, and many of the hottest fashions can be easily recreated at home. To give you a head start, we’ve rounded up a handful of tips, tricks and DIY ideas on p.38.

Happy pampering! Kate Springer Editor

Mary Kay Beauty Contest Finale Aug 14

Sep 7- 8 Fashion’s Night Out Hosted by Vogue China and Lane Crawford, Fashion’s Night Out is back again for a second year in Hong Kong. The phenomenally successful event is a global designer and retailer initiative that first began in 2009, and has since become one of the biggest events in the fashion industry’s calendar. Aside from after-hours shopping throughout the weekend, FNO will also offer a number of collaborative pop-ups with Hong Kong lifestyle and fashion boutiques, such as Kapok and Moustache. In addition, shoppers can purchase a specially designed T-shirt by Alexander Wang—the proceeds of which will be donated to Unicef. 4pm. Lane Crawford branches, including 3/F, IFC, 8 Finance St., Central, 2118-2288. Free.

Beauty brand Mary Kay hosted the finale of its beauty contest, “One Woman Can,” last month with a star-studded bash at The Space in Sheung Wan. Despite a typhoon, guests packed the venue to support the finalists. Everyone took home goody bags jampacked with Mary Kay makeup.

Aesop Face Cream It removes impurities and leaves me feeling really refreshed. I put it on twice a week, for two hours. Can you tell I am very regimented?

Cherry Lip Balm I am obsessed with lip balm! My friend who lives in South Africa gave me this balm. It is cherry flavored, so I normally use this if I think I’m going to be kissing somebody.

I don’t actually know where this is from—probably from one of the stores on Star Street—but my friends gave it to me for Christmas. I love the vintage canvas look and the leather straps.

Diptique Fragrance It’s a different and unique smell that’s both coconuty and fresh. I don’t normally go for the normal male fragrances like Calvin Klein or something like that. This may even be a woman’s scent, but who cares? I love how it smells.

Squarestreet Shoes I don’t normally wear a lot of color—I usually wear navy and black a lot—so I love that they pop. Plus, they remind me of the beach and summer. I got them at Squarestreet, which has a really cool aesthetic.

Swim Trunks These are some of my favorite swimmers, which are from H&M. In the summer, I love going to South Bay or hiking out to Tai Long Wong in Sai Kung; it feels like it’s a little oasis away from the city.

Laptop Bag This is from American Apparel, which always has simple but cool stuff. I wanted something that was a little bit different as a laptop case, and navy is my favorite color, so this bag is perfect.

The List team tests out a few of the hottest fall nail trends with a little help from The Nail Library.

1.Sticker Craze

2. Mad About Matte

Thanks to the easy nature of nail stickers, you can add some unexpected flair to your fingertips with hardly any effort. The Nail Library dresses up List intern Kelly Cheuk Ying Ho’s talons with NCLA stick-on patterns.

One of the season’s coolest nail textures, matte is both subtle and sophisticated. The Nail Library put together a fresh fall look for HK Magazine’s Adele Wong. You can do this with any color of polish, but we loved this wineinspired hue.

Want to DIY? 1. Clean, file and shape natural nails

Want to DIY?

2. Stick on chosen pattern firmly to desired nail (we used NCLA stickers, $165 per pack of 24)

1. Clean, file and shape natural nails

3. Fold gently on nail edge; file sticker to nail length 4. Paint remaining nails with base coat and desired color (we used NCLA’s Malibu Beach Babe, from $150 each) 5. Paint top coat on all nails, including sticker Play Around: Mix things up by covering half of the nail with a patterned piece, or create your own funky French tips.

12

2. Paint with base coat and desired color (we used Ciaté’s Paparazzi, from $120 each) 3. Using a small paint brush, add dots of gold, silver and bronze sparkly polish to ring fingers (Butter London’s Marbs, The Full Monty, Bit Faker, Trustafarian; from $150 each) 4. When dry, finish with Butter London’s Matte Finishing Coat

Play Around: Try other clever DIY strategies, such as using steam to give wet nails a matte texture. For an extra dash of cool, add glossy varnish to the tips of matte nails. See p.38 for tricks on using Band-Aids to paint straight lines.

3. Peekaboo Color This is the perfect look for city-chic women who prefer understated designs. We are suckers for purple, but you can use any bright shade that will pop under the black polish.

4. Go Monochrome This fall is all about black-and-white patterns. To add dimension to the trend, The Nail Library painted some asymmetrical lines and gray accents on HK Mag’s Katie Kenny.

Want to DIY? 1. Clean, file and shape natural nails 2. Paint with base coat and a solid white on all nails except pinkies (we used Ciaté’s Snow Virgin)

Want to DIY?

3. Paint both pinkies black (we used Ciaté’s Unrestricted Glam)

1. Clean, file and shape natural nails

4. Paint about ¾ of the thumbs and middle fingers black

2. Paint with base coat and desired shade of neon (we used Butter London’s Brummie)

5. Using a careful hand, use a tiny paint brush to paint three black lines on the pointer and ring fingers

3. Using a careful hand, paint black over top of the neon base. Careful not to get too close to the edge; you want the hue to act as a contour (we used Butter London’s Union Jack Black)

6. Keep black lines on the right half of the nail

4. Finish with a top coat

9. Finish with a top coat

Play Around: To make this look even more mysterious, you can finish off the square by adding a straight line across the tips of your nails. How’s that for thinking outside the box?

Play Around: Ok, we admit it, this one is a little tricky to recreate at home unless you are best friends with an aspiring Picasso. Try a simplified version: paint all of your nails white, then paint black on ¾ of each nail for a crescent-moon effect.

7. Mix together white and black Acryla Gouache paint (available at craft stores) to make a gray color 8. Paint two slightly thicker lines to the left of the black lines

1. Sticker craze

2. Mad about matte

3. Peekaboo color

4. go monochrome

5. Tartan with a twist

ncla stickers

13

4. Paint two more black vertical lines on the other side of the nail 5. Weave a black horizontal line over and under the vertical lines 6. Add a thin white line on top of the black lines 7. Finish with a top coat

5. Tartan with a Twist Whether you’re Celtic and proud, or you simply adore tartan checks, you can carry a little touch of Scotland on your fingertips with some bold red plaid.

Want to DIY?

Play Around: This one looks harder than it is, but if you need something a little bit more hands-off, you can simplify the process: 1. Clean, file and shape natural nails 2. Paint with base coat and a solid red polish 3. Start with one fat white line across the middle of the nails

1. Clean, file and shape natural nails

4. Add a black line on either side of the white stripe and also in the middle of the white stripe

2. Paint with base coat and a red polish (we used Butter London’s Saucy Jack)

5. Draw two vertical black lines, close together, on the left side of your nail

3. Using a careful hand, use a tiny paint brush to paint two vertical black lines on the pointer finger, near the side of the nail

6. Draw a gray line horizontally across the nail (closer to the root) and another vertically down the right side your nail 7. Finish with a top coat

Shellac Manicure The Basics: A Shellac manicure involves the same procedure as a gel manicure but the polish is made of different ingredients. Shellac nails are highly durable and look flawless for the first two weeks. It also comes with insurance: the manufacturer of Shellac only sells to licensed professionals. Time Commitment: 60 minutes Perfect For: Those who are on-the-go and prone to chipping basic manicures. Tips & Tricks Handy hacks

polishing. This sets the manicure and helps to avoid knicks and scratches. If you don’t have any oil spray, you can soak some cotton balls in olive oil and squeeze it onto your nails.

5. Tape It! It’s hard enough painting your nails a solid color yourself, let alone adding all these funky designs. If you want to color between the lines without any mishaps, here’s some advice: 1. Add base coat to your nails and then polish them with a color of your choice. 2. Cut chevron tape (or scotch tape) into desired shapes and attach it to your nails when they’re totally dry.

Try these tricks at home before dropping the big bucks at a salon.

1. Toothpick Trick Sometimes, the most readily available items at home can double as artsy tools for your nails. Take a toothpick, for example, which can easily transform into a painting utensil for those looking to draw polkadots, lines, checkers or tiny details. Simply dip the stick into your polish, and get creative!

2. All That Glitters Bored of those everyday nails? Add some sparkle to brighten up your day. 1.

After painting a base coat on your nails, add a light shade and a top coat.

2.

As the top coat dries, use a small paintbrush to dab on loose glitter.

3.

Disperse glitter evenly across the nail or create a pattern.

38

4.

Add another top coat to lock down the glitter.

3. Gel Be Gone Gels nails may be fun at first, but removing them is a serious headache— and expensive. Take them off at home with a few steps: 1. Use your nail file to scratch off the top, clear layer of the gel nails. 2. Soak 10 cotton balls in acetone and lay them on your nails.

3. Using a darker color, paint to your heart’s content over the tape. 4. Let the color dry, then carefully remove the tape. 5. Seal it with a clear top coat and admire your handiwork.

6. Bonjour, Band-Aids Yup, that’s right, BandAids to the rescue. You can do your own elegant French tips at home by using this medicine kit staple. 1.

After your base coat and first layer of polish, adhere a Band-Aid to each of your fingers, leaving about half a centimeter at the tips.

2.

Paint the tips with a polish of a lighter color.

3.

After the color dries completely, peel the Band-Aids off towards your cuticle

4.

Finish with a top coat, and voilà!

3. Wrap them with foil and let them soak for around 10 minutes. 4. Pull off the foil and start scraping nails with an orange stick. Don’t force it; if they aren’t soft enough, let nails soak for another 10 minutes. 5. After scraping off the layers, wash your hands and use a nail buffer to smooth out your nails.

4. Smudge Proof

7. Cuticle Care

To prevent nails from smudging the moment you leave the house, spray them with cooking oil after

Your cuticles aren’t as soft and smooth as the rest of your skin, but they are essential in protecting your nail matrix where your nails grow. Make sure

Know & Tel you take care of them by moisturizing regularly. The easiest trick? Simply rub some Vaseline on your cuticles before you go to bed, and you’re on your way to more supple skin.

8. Get Messy We all need to mix things up every once and a while. Instead of the sameold style, try a little paint splatter. Here’s how: 1. Wear a T-shirt you don’t care about, and cover your table with newspaper or plastic. 2. Add a base coat and a light polish to your nails. 3. Dip a disposable, slanted paintbrush into brightly colored polish.

4. Position the brush overtop of your nails. Gently and slowly, pull back the brush and let the varnish splatter. 5. Rinse the brush, then repeat the dipand-pull process with another bright polish or two. 6. Finish with top coat.

Look for Essie nail polish, which has every shade you can think of!

10. Encode Your Nails Try out this cool idea: paste barcode tattoos onto your nails. 1.

Apply a base coat and a layer of light polish.

2.

Find a few barcodes you particularly like, cut them into pieces, and lay them over your nails while the polish is wet.

3.

The ink will transfer to your nail for a unique look.

4.

Finish with clear polish and you’re good to go.

7. After you’re done splattering, clean the nail polish from your fingers and hands with remover.

9. Color Wheel This is a super simple trend to try at home. Polish your nails with a five-tone color combination that grows gradually lighter from thumb to pinky.

Watch out, though, when you’re at the checkout counter in Park N Shop!

Take 6: Manicure Myths The List gets to the bottom of what’s real and what’s rubbish.

1. True or false? Keeping polish in the fridge makes it last longer. Nope, sorry, icy varnish is not the way to get more bang for your buck, especially if you use your polish frequently. The best way to store your stash is to cap it tightly and keep it away from direct sunlight—any old medicine cabinet should do the trick. 2. True or false? Applying polish too often can turn nails yellow. Indeed, this phenomenon is related to polish—but that’s not entirely accurate. The yellowing effect is actually caused by the organic solvents in polish remover. Applying remover too frequently can eat away at the natural fats in your nails, which eventually may weaken them and turn them yellow.

Know & Tel 3. True or false? Cutting your cuticles is beneficial to your nails. It seems like keeping your skin tamed would be a good thing, but cutting your cuticles can actually be dangerous. Your cuticles protect your nail bed, which is responsible for producing cells that turn into nails. Though it’s not necessarily harmful to clean them up once in a while, cutting cuticles too short, or with unsterilized tools, increases the possibility of infections. 4. True or false? Consuming collagen and gelatin helps nails stay pretty. Sorry, ladies, this one’s total malarkey. It’s not that collagen or gelatin is harmful to your health, but it simply just won’t help your nails in any way. Fingernails and toenails are made up of keratin, which is a totally different kind of protein. So, instead of swallowing loads of collagen pills and snacks, moisturize your nails more often and follow a balanced diet. 5. True or false? Polish is safe for pregnant women. Lock up your varnish, moms-tobe! Nail polish is full of different chemicals that can be harmful to the growth of your wee little one. If you must keep your talons on trend, try those manicure stick-on designs that are all the rage these days. 6. True or false? Submerging wet nails in ice water makes them dry faster. Sadly, this ice-cold trick doesn’t work, because nail polish only dries when its chemical ingredients evaporate. In other words, they need some air. The best way to dry nails is by placing them under a lamp or near a fan—or both!

Hideaway

Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees

WHY WE LIKE IT Located northwest of Tai Po in the New Territories, the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees are one of the most popular shrines in Hong Kong. In the past, visitors could write wishes on pieces of joss paper, tie them onto oranges and and toss them into the two prominent banyan trees. But in 2005, one of the branches fell to the ground and now guests hang their colorful wishing papers on nearby wooden 50

racks to prevent further damage to the trees. While you’re there, don’t miss the award-winning designs in the public washroom.

GETTING THERE Take the East Rail Line to Tai Po Market station. Hop on KMB Bus 64K and disembark at Fong Ma Po. The Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees are across the road.
