Editor’s Letter For the Win We are thrilled to bring you The List’s second-annual Readers’ Choice Awards, where we have honored more than 300 nominees in 30 different categories for being all-around outstanding. From local designers to cupcakes, massages to home décor, we’ve tallied the 3,500-plus votes from List readers to name a victor in each category. Whether you’re looking for the best place for a mani-pedi or the No. 1 fashion blogger, a peruse through this issue will lead you to hundreds of Hong Kong’s best spots. While some of these nominees are household names,

this guide will surely introduce you to some new favorites at smaller boutique addresses. While only 20 of the 30 categories appear here in print, you can check out the full list of winners online at tiny.cc/rca2013. There, you’ll find the best vintage shop, wine store, staycation and more. Congratulations again to all of the nominees—the nomination alone is a symbol of excellent products and services throughout the year. Til’ next year, Kate Springer

How it Works

We set up the Readers’ Choice Awards for the first time last year to give List readers a chance to vote for their favorite brands. Here are the basics: • The List editorial team nominated 10 brands and services in 30 categories. • Over the course of five weeks, readers voted online for their favorites. • After totaling 3,500 votes, we have announced the winners both in print and online! • As always, The List’s editorial content remains indepent from advertising.

Stay in Touch I’d love to hear from you! E-mail me at kate.springer@hkmagmedia.com, or follow me on Twitter: @KateSpringer.

5 Minutes with Spa Beaute Par Zai The List: Can you tell us a little about Nigar’s beauty and spa training? SBPZ: As a beauty therapist and graduate of medical sciences, Nigar has her ITEC diploma from England, and continuously takes courses from the US and all over the world to keep up with ever-changing beauty technologies.

Spa Beaute Par Zai tells The List about owner Nigar Qureshi’s signature services and what’s new at this stalwart spa sanctuary. The List: How did SBPZ come to be? Spa Beaute Par Zai: Like any entrepreneurial venture, Spa Beaute Par Zai (Spa BPZ) was a dream of its owner Nigar Qureshi, and eventually it became a reality with sheer hard work and persistence.

The List: What is the feel inside Spa BPZ? SBPZ: Nigar has a keen interest in interior design, and she makes her spa as relaxing as possible. It’s bright and full of energy—basically traditional meets shabby chic—but also very welcoming, with soft décor and staff members who are always smiling. The List: What are your signature services? SBPZ: We have been open since 1975—making us the longest-standing spa. We actually introduced Brazilian waxing here, calling it “007” back in the day, and we also brought Hollywood facials to Hong Kong. Spa BPZ is also a market leader in niche services, such as Oxyessential (oxygen

with essential oils). Nigar has been a practicing aromatherapist for more than 20 years. The List: What training services do you offer? SBPZ: Nigar provides trainings courses for people who want to choose beauty as a career. For instance, people can come here to learn how to become a facialist or a pedicurist—our makeup artist courses are constantly fully booked. Spa BPZ also offers hands-on practical training to all of the staff members so that they keep up with new developments and provide quality customer service. The List: What special offers should List readers know about? SBPZ: We would like to offer List readers $300 off the signature Hollywood facials (ranked in the world’s Top 10), which originally costs $890. 12/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2524-1272, www.spabpz.com

5 Minutes with Mothers en Vogue™ Founder Sharon Ho Norton and Hong Kong franchise owner Vicki Soh tell The List all about how motherhood inspired their brand, Mothers en Vogue™. The List: What is the story behind the brand? Sharon Ho Norton: I started Mothers en Vogue™ (MEV) in 2003 out of a conviction that nursing mothers and mothers-to-be deserve high-quality clothing that’s trendy, comfortable and eco-friendly.

34

Readers’Choice Awards

The List: How did motherhood influence Mothers en Vogue™? SHN: Having breastfed my two children, each for four years, I believe breastfeeding should be a positive and empowering journey for every mom. The aim of MEV is to instil confidence in breastfeeding through cleverly designed nursing wear that is stylish, practical and comfortable. The List: What’s special about the clothes? SHN: MEV’s signature range X.TENDED® is designed for maternity and nursing use and caters for every occasion, which means moms can stock up on

these stylish and practical pieces during pregnancy without feeling guilty. MEV clothing not only looks beautiful but feels good too. MEV works with natural fibers and increasingly, environmentally friendly alternatives that are grown without harmful chemicals. Our clothing is constructed with natural fabrication—cotton, linen, bamboo, silk and naturally derived yarns—as these natural textiles are most comfortable and breatheable, which in turn reduce incidences of skin sensitivities or reaction. The List: Why did you bring Mothers en Vogue™ to Hong Kong? Vicki Soh: When I was pregnant five years ago, I found it really difficult to find stylish and reasonably priced maternity clothes here. I fell in love with Mothers en Vogue™ when I went shopping in Singapore during a trip home. As a proud Singaporean, I am excited to introduce this Singapore brand to Hong Kong! 5 Minutes with the General Store Owner of the General Store, Shelly Hayashi tells The List what inspired her to open her shop and what makes it different from other home and lifestyle stores. The List: Why did you open the General Store? Shelly Hayashi: When I first moved to Hong Kong about three years ago, I was searching for home décor shops that met my aesthetic. When I found there was a void in the market, I decided to bring it to Hong Kong! The List: What styles does your shop carry? SH: The General Store certainly has a collection that is unique in Hong Kong. We carry a mix of high-end and imported designs of the 20th century, but we are also not afraid of a little rust, and love the elements of the Industrial Movement.

SH: We are a full-service design shop, offering interior design services for commercial and residential projects as well as branding, packaging and logo development—there is nothing we can’t do! The List: Do you have any tips for decorating small spaces? SH: Think vertical and also think about multi-use. A table that doubles as a desk—or a bed that turns into a chaise. I stopped playing competitively in ’96, and I wanted to find something I had a passion for. If you asked me 12 years ago if that would be yoga, I would have laughed. But, on a golf holiday in 2001, simply because it was raining, I took a yoga class and now here we are talking. The List: How did that turn into Pure? CG: I can remember coming out of the class—it was a 4pm hot class on a Thursday—and feeling like I had never felt before. It was amazing. One

thing led to another, and I opened a yoga studio in Hong Kong within six months. The List: What was the yoga scene back then? CG: Back in 2001 or 2002, there were only about four yoga studios—a combined area of like 2,000 square feet. We opened a 6,500-square-foot space, and were essentially the first people to make it mainstream. The List: What about Pure are you most proud of? CG: Probably the community that we built; the connections that have been forged, the marriages and the friendships. You look at 12 years ago, there wasn’t a yoga community, and now we have 8-9,000 people who can practice. The List: How does Pure serve the community? CG: Since January last year, we have had more than 450 free community classes at Pure that have served more than 20,000 people. We also fundraise for charities and sponsor people to travel for yoga and fitness projects around the world.

The List: What’s new with Pure? CG: Diet and nutrition are equally as important as exercise, so we have hired a raw food chef on board at our our nood food juice bar to make “super food” juice cleanses, organic dishes and post-workout snacks, which will soon be available at all Pure locations. We also have have Pure Apparel, an active wear brand, that’s expanding rapidly throughout Asia. The List: What about inside the gyms? CG: We are opening another branch in LKF next year, and we will be remodeling and expanding the Kinwick Centre location to include a two-story “Fit Pit” for bootcamp-style workouts. Check out the latest branches: Pure Yoga, 2/F, Asia Standard Tower, 59-65 Queen’s Rd. Central, 8178-0000, www.pure-yoga.com
