What’s new in the world of the paranormal?

Hauntings on Ice: Strange Ghost Photos Capture Dark “Skeleton” Figures at Ice Rink A series of strange ghost photos recently popped up on Reddit, showing what appear to be strange, shadowy figures lurking near a group of young men shovelling snow off an ice rink. Only according to the photographer, no one else was there at the time. The picture was posted by user ashleyc93, and according to her, was snapped by her neighbour one night this past winter when his three sons were helping shovel during a storm. The two images were taken on the neighbour’s phone only seconds apart, and as you can see, the first one image shows nothing out of the ordinary, the second image, however, is a different story.

In the second photo you can make out what according to ashleyc93 looks an awful lot like two dark figures moving by. Ashley believes that the images, which were posted on Friday evening, also show the figures pulling a coffin behind them as they go. I don’t see the coffin, but hey, maybe I don’t know where to look. Of course, the images sparked plenty of debate about their validity, with lots of theories about what could have caused the strange skeletal shapes in the snow. Plenty of people suggested that the pictures were the result of a rolling shutter effect, poor lighting, and slow shutter speed capturing a few skaters rolling by, though the poster assured that no one else was present when the images were taken.

The ethics of spirit communication: Ghost hunter allegedly contacts B.B. King Riley B. King, better known as legendary blues singer and guitarist B.B. King, passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2015. Not 24 hours after his death, Steve Huff from Huff Paranormal, acting on the urging of his fans, conducted a spirit box (an instrumental trans-communication device, which allows non-physical beings to communicate through electronic devices) session in an attempt to communicate with the guitar legend. He then uploaded the video to his Facebook page. This has sparked outrage from several paranormal groups and various individuals who viewed this stunt as offensive. Alex Matsuo wrote a blog entry entitled “My Skewed View of Death according To Steve Huff.” In her post, Matsuo denounces Huffs actions as “morally wrong.” Having recently dealt with a death of a family member, she called the timing of the video “extraordinarily distasteful.” Matsuo messaged Huff about the video on Facebook, letting him know what she thought about the video’s timing. Huff responded unapologetically, saying “I simply post what comes through, and if you do not like how I do things, then do not come here. If a message comes in from someone who died 6 hours ago I will post it, as it is called research and figuring out some of life's mysteries.” Justin Brown from Interface Death also responded to Huff’s post virtually the same manner as Matsuo. He calls Huff’s attempts to communicate with B.B. King “asinine” and “unethical.” Brown feels this “should be done in private and not posted on the Internet.” Regardless of the fact that ghost hunting is centred on communicating with those that have passed, it is generally agreed that there are some boundaries that shouldn’t be crossed. Everyone has heard of lawyers that chase ambulances to try to get clients; this was ambulance chasing for B.B. King. Matsuo suggested rather than posting the video to let the family know of that he had a conversation with King from beyond the grave. No grieving family wants to see someone posting a video of them trying to communicate, or receive a phone call notifying them that someone talked to their recently deceased relative. The best thing that Huff could have done was decline his followers’ requests, or waited for time to pass before trying to cash in on talking to a celebrity ghost. Before anyone decides what to think of Huff’s actions, ask yourself one question: Would you want someone attempting to communicate with your loved one and posting the video of it just hours after their passing?

John Lennon UFO link to North Wales's extraterrestrial Berwyn Mountains mystery Russ Kellett said he now owns sketch Lennon created after 1974 UFO sighting

Sketch John Lennon is said to have created after he and girlfriend May Pang saw a UFO in New York

A leading expert on one of North Wales’s greatest UFO mysteries claims to own a rare sketch John Lennon created to record an alien encounter he allegedly experienced in America. Russ Kellett, is known for investigating the 1974 UFO Berwyn Mountains incident involving theories of an extraterrestrial craft crashing in the area. Mr Kellett said a few months ago he bought Lennon’s sketch of an encounter he had with a flying saucer in New York - the same year as the North Wales incident. Lennon, whose first wife Cynthia died earlier this year and once lived in Ruthin, was said to have made a number of drawings following the sighting. He claimed he was standing on the balcony of his apartment on August 23 1974, with former girlfriend May Pang. The pair claimed to have seen a flying saucer hovering silently over them. In Lennon’s song Nobody Told Me he appears to refer to the incident with the lyric “There’s a UFO over New York and I ain’t too surprised.” Mr Kellett, an avid collector of UFO material and a Beatles fan, said when he was the chance to acquire the sketch, he jumped at the opportunity. He said: “A friend of mine told me it was becoming available from a private collector and I thought, this was a double dream for me. “I am a massive collector of all things UFO and have a huge archive and am a collector of Beatles memorabilia. “I have a leather jacket worn by John Lennon in 1969 up until 1974. So this was fantastic. “It is one of a few he made he made of the incident. “This one shows him on the balcony pointing into the sky at the object which says UFO on it.” NEWS UPDATE!! – MAY PANG, LENNON’S EX GIRLFRIEND SAYS THE DRAWING IS FAKE!! 7

Spirit in Golden Gate home investigated by local ghost hunters COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – The Haunted Apparition Hunters, based out of Naples, say they have been pulled, punched and spoken to by a ghost in a Golden Gate home. The family who lives in the home says it’s the spirit of a man who sometimes hangs out in the yard, upstairs and downstairs. The spirit has been bothering the family and appeared to them, so they called the ghost team. WINK News joined the crew on their fourth visit to the home. During our interview about the home, Eric Kincaid turned on the white noise box. It’s what he says is a way for ghosts to verbally communicate. We thought we would pick up some sound of the static on our cameras but much more happened. Voices came out of the box, lights lit up on the machine and Kincaid’s pendulum began to swing. It was much more than we had bargained for and it was frightening. The question and answer session went on for about 10 minutes and then it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. The Haunted Apparition Hunters say they will take people on investigations with their team. It costs $35. The charge is to help pay for their equipment.

Sue’s Twopenneth Aston Villa fan ‘loses life savings after psychic told him to bet them on Arsenal losing FA Cup final’ An Aston Villa fan has apparently lost his home and life savings after a psychic convinced him to bet them on his team-beating Arsenal in the FA Cup final. Goals from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal a resounding 4-0 win at Wembley on Saturday, leaving one unnamed Villa fan severely out of pocket. That’s according to Twitter user @DavidBlackm0re, who tweeted about the ill-advised bet on Friday, although the gambler in question remains unidentified. We do have some suspicions about the story, mainly because strangers don’t talk on the tube. To be fair, though, we have seen some psychics get the result wrong already…

Hi, my name is Steve Taggart and I have been interested in the Paranormal for many years. I decided to join a local paranormal group, which took my path towards starting my own back in 2007. And with the help of some enthusiastic friends, the UK Shadow Seekers was born. And the Rest as They Say is History …

Do I Need Lots of Expensive Equipment I Hear You Ask? And the answer is No, not to get started. All you need is a Pen and Paper and maybe a Digital Camera. Of course that only allows you to document everything that happens but if you are not Psychic, and for the purposes of this booklet I will assume you are not, then this will not get you very far. The next piece of equipment you will need is a cheap Dictaphone or other Recording Device. This is always a good idea, so you can try and record any possible EVP’s, known as Electronic Voice Phenomena. This is where you make sure everyone is quiet and you ask a set of control questions, like:What year it is? or Who is on the throne? (Although it is possible that they may not know the answer to these questions) And remember to throw a personal question into this, to help further verify things. It is also a good idea to keep it running until you have a break, as not only will you get a record of what has happened during your vigil, you might also pick up an EVP or something else that you didn’t hear at the time. Remember that you may record for hours without getting the strange voices, so Be Patient. The next piece of equipment that may be useful is a set of Dowsing Rods. You don’t need to spend a lot as they start at £5 depending on how fancy the design. All they need to be is comfortable in your hands. When you purchase your Dowsing Rods, there is normally a small booklet that tells you how to use them. You may think that these are a bit old hat but the gas board still uses them today. Dowsing Rods, although a good tool for Spirit Communication, can also be used to find Ley Lines, which are said to be the Ancient Spiritual Lines of the Earth.

It is not known if this is true but properties with Ley Lines running through them tend to have a lot of Spiritual Activity. Dowsing Crystal or a Pendulum can also be used to Contact Spirits in the same way as Dowsing Rods, but would be used with a map or chart to find Ley Lines You now have a way of talking to Spirit and at this point I would remind you to always be courteous to Spirit, despite what you see on television. Remember they used to be people just like you... Would you like to be verbally abused? I’m sure the answer is No.

CRYSTAL MAGIC – CONNECTING WITH THE ANGELIC REALMS Mother earth's womb Crystals were born from the womb of Mother Earth, which gives them their unique aura of mystery and magic. They never lose colour, brilliance, beauty or value and in many ancient civilisations this aligned them with the spirit world and Heaven. Perhaps the fist written accounts of crystal healing came from the ancient Egyptians who gave detailed recipes for using gemstones such as Malachite for healing. Crystals are mentioned many times in the Bible, and in some metaphysical circles (healing/psychic circles), it is believed that certain crystals are naturally attuned to the angelic realm. This alignment is due to their colour, angelic appearance or name. It can also be due to the very high resonance they carry, which naturally attunes the wearer or owner, to the highest spiritual realms. Choosing your crystal When choosing an ‘angel crystal’ ask the angels to help to guide you to the one that is meant for you. This could be a simple act such as ‘being drawn’ to a particular crystal, or one seems to ‘glow’ or radiate in some way. I always hold a couple of crystals and the one that feels 'just right' or warms up in my hand, is the one! Cleansing ceremony Once you have purchased your crystal, you can enact a simple cleansing ceremony asking the angels to place their energy within the crystal. I use the following angel incantation when cleansing my crystals. "Dear angels of love & protection & your divine shining light, please encase my beautiful crystal with your golden shield so bright". Say this 3 times to bring a little magic into your life. Angelic crystals Once your crystals are cleansed introduce them to your angel altar, place them either side of an angel figurine which will not only look pretty but will enforce your intention of being ready to work with your angel crystals. BIO - ALISON WYNNE-RYDER Alison Wynne-Ryder is a Clairvoyant Medium of international fame whose extraordinary abilities bring comfort and guidance to her many clients worldwide. Here is a brief description of some, of the ‘angelic crystals’ available’. I have chosen these not just for their qualities, but because they are usually readily available and not too expensive.

Following on from their appearance in the show; we focus in the Sussex based COTC investigation team. C.O.T.C.P.I was founded in 1996 by Stacey Lloyd-Briden, Stuart Logan and Adrian Lloyd-Briden after discovering we all had an interest in all things Paranormal. At the time there were only a handful of organisations around and locations were easier and cheaper to hire for a nights investigation and it was decided to open the organisation up to members of the public to come and experience Paranormal Investigations for themselves. Our first official investigation was an outdoor location in Sussex and it proved to be very quiet, something that happens more often than not on serious investigations compared to the TV programmes. Membership grew very quickly and by 2000 we had over 45 members and were investigating almost every weekend in the year. We have investigated over 50 locations over the years and some we have visited several times. A personal favourite is Michelham Priory in East Sussex which we have visited some 15 times over the years, results have been good from this location but there were also nights when next to nothing happened. We hold letters of recommendation from Sussex Past, English Heritage and the MOD amongst others. Sadly in 2011 Adrian passed away and we took a step away from investigating for a while, however we will be returning to regular investigations in the very near future. We will also be working on a website at http://www.cotcpi.co.uk and if anyone has any questions my email is stulogan316@hotmail.com Stuart Logan Co-Founder/Research Manager

The Haunted Skirrid Mountain Inn by Lionel & Patricia Fanthorpe The Skirrid Mountain Inn, to give it its full title, is situated in Llanfihangel Crucorney, a picturesque little Welsh village. Abergavenny in Monmouthshire lies a few miles to the south of it. The Skirrid is estimated to be one of the oldest pubs in the UK, dating back at least to the start of the Twelfth Century, and it could well be considerably older. The famous Owain Glyndwr used the Skirrid in the Fifteenth Century when he rallied his warriors there before riding out to attack the adherents of the English King Henry IV who reigned from 1399 until 1413. As well as the frequent fighting associated with Owain Glyndwr, there were many other traumatic events in and around the Skirrid as centuries passed. In the days when sheep stealing was a capital offence, the Skirrid was in use as a court-room. According to some accounts nearly 200 convicted prisoners were hanged there, and the beam from which the executioner’s rope dangled is still pointed out to visitors to the inn today. Records indicate that the last judicial hanging took place there at about the same time as the death of Oliver Cromwell in 1658. There are a great many reports of psychic and supernatural events from the Skirrid. It has featured in a number of TV shows dealing with investigations into reports of the paranormal, and on one of these, a few years ago, we were invited by a film-director friend to investigate several of the reports of hauntings at the Skirrid. There are stories that the notorious hanging Judge Jeffreys once condemned prisoners to death in the Skirrid, and there are reports from witnesses who claim that his troubled spirit is among those that walk the inn. The ghost of John Crowther, who was hanged for sheep-stealing has also been reported there, as has the ghost of the hangman who carried out the sentence on John. Another curious legend attached to the Skirrid concerns Rudolf Hess, who was in the Military Hospital at Abergavenny recovering from a serious leg injury during WW2. It was claimed that he was allowed to exercise under strict supervision, and that a sympathetic custodian had once bought him a drink in the Skirrid. Consequently, there have been a few reports since his death in 1987 that his unhappy spirit has been sighted wandering on the mountainside not far from the inn!

Many of the ghostly phenomena reported from the Skirrid are harmless, even benign. Henry Vaughan was a local priest who is now said to haunt the Skirrid in a benevolent way, as though trying to ease the sufferings of those who were once imprisoned and executed there. In 1873 a barmaid named Fanny Price died of tuberculosis in the Skirrid while only in her early thirties. She is said to appear frequently in Room Three. Witnesses have also reported a mysterious White Lady haunting the inn. Sounds as well as sights are reported from the Skirrid. There are noises like soldiers marshalling together in the yard – but nothing can be seen of them. Reported poltergeist phenomena frequently take the form of glasses flying across the bar and breaking on walls or floors. Some witnesses have reported seeing coins moving in much the same way as the glasses. In addition to such movements, sights and sounds, there are also reports of powerful perfume. When Robert Snow was investigating Llanchaiac Fawr with us a few years ago, there was a powerful smell of lavender perfume on the spiral staircase from the kitchen to the dining room, where the housekeeper’s ghost had frequently been reported by other witnesses. On the night when we were investigating the Skirrid for the TV show, we had gone to bed shortly before midnight in the historic four-poster in the room where there had been many reports of sightings of Fanny Price’s ghost. We experienced nothing and were sleeping peacefully when there was an urgent knocking on the bedroom door. We opened it to find our Director, the camera crew and sound engineer: all experienced professionals with a lot of common sense. They said that they had just been filming in the room where the condemned had spent their last night on Earth before being hanged early next morning. It was odd to hear such levelheaded colleagues jointly reporting a strange, sinister and frightening atmosphere in that room, along with fleeting glimpses of spectral shapes and weird sounds. They asked if I would come and exorcise it, to which I readily agreed. Having blessed some holy water, I followed them into the room where they had reported the strange phenomena, and duly performed the requested exorcism. A few minutes later, I left them to continue their filming and went back to bed. At breakfast they reported that after the exorcism the room had returned to normal and they had been able to complete their filming with no further problems. Such was our experience of the Skirrid – a very comfortable and hospitable inn and well worth a visit A Special thank you to Patricia and Lionel Fanthorpe for allowing us to publish this article in our magazine

In June we were joined by writer and researcher Darryl E Berry Jr Darryl E Berry Jr. describes himself as a long time practitioner, researcher, and observer of all things metaphysical, mystical, and cutting edge, including the outof-body experience or astral travel, extraterrestrial life, consciousness development, channelling, telepathy, spirituality including A Course in Miracles, and fourth-density thought.

Introduction to ‘Travel Far’ - Darryl’s book of his experiences Do you remember going to sleep or waking from sleep and being unable to move as if paralyzed? This is commonly experienced at the start or end of an out-of-body experience (OBE or OOBE). Do you remember having dreams of flying or dreams of falling, accompanied by very real sensations of weightlessness or falling? You were likely unconsciously floating into the nonphysical while dreaming of flying, and then experiencing a rapid reintegration with the physical body similarly masked by dream imagery. Do you remember experiencing vibrations, loud engine-like sounds, gunshot-like bangs, or metallic-like clicks inside your head when going to sleep or upon awakening? These are also common occurrences during the initiation or conclusion of an OBE. The out-of-body experience or astral travel is a mode of perception during which one experiences existing and traveling apart from the physical body. This is often experienced as an ethereal, energy-based body. You perceive and experience as validly as you do with the physical senses. Things perceived and experienced are as real as the book you are holding, or the screen you are viewing. You can fly, teleport, walk through walls, and travel extensively throughout space and time; and through various dimensions. Extraterrestrial (ET) life near and far, other planets, the far reaches of the Earth, other dimensions, the past and the future, other lifetimes, alternate timelines or parallel universes, the “afterlife” or “in-between lifetime” realms, and a variety of other interesting subjects can be directly explored and validated through the out-of-body experience. At the very least you can learn that you are more than a physical body. Through OBEs you are able to observe physical events and validate your observations. Correlating experiences with other out-of-body explorers is also possible, as you can travel and experience the same things just as we could go to physical locations jointly or separately and confirm our experiences and observations afterwards. Unless you do something extremely strenuous while OBE – which is very difficult to do – you wake up from an OBE as refreshed as or even more refreshed than normal sleep, since the sleep state of the OBE is equivalent to a very restful and energizing deep sleep. 20

I share in this work several journals of my own out-of-body experiences, and a comprehensive system for learning to cause the out-of-body experience yourself so you too can experience this phenomenon. All techniques mentioned in my journals (and more) are taught in Part Two. This system is based upon my own recurring experiential first-hand investigations, my extensive literary research on the subject, as well as my experience with teaching others how to successfully out-of-body travel. I am sure you will enjoy reading of my travels. And if it is your hope to have the experience yourself, may your efforts be inspired! If you apply the system I share herein you do succeed, it’s that simple. And as our individual interdimensional awareness expands we help to facilitate not only our own development, but the development and progress of the human race itself. In May the noted occult investigator David Farrent joined us on the show. David is best known for his investigation into the supposed Highgate Vampire. Following the interview David’s wife Della kindly wrote an article on the case… “The Highgate Vampire” is a term, which means different things to many people. Some of you will have grown up reading about rumours of a ‘vampire’ roaming the sprawling Victorian necropolis known as Highgate Cemetery in North London, and steep Swains Lane which bisects its two parts. I have no intention of boring KTPF readers with a rehash of the hundreds of generic articles, often riddled with inaccuracies, that can be read elsewhere online. You are all intelligent people, and if you are bothering to read this then you are probably as bored as I am with being subjected to the same old copied and pasted nonsense that is regularly spammed across the internet. Is there any need for yet another article about the Highgate ‘vampire’? I would say – most certainly, yes – if it is the entity itself which is the subject, and not the usual fictional witness accounts and ludicrous claims which so often engulf it. Time after time I, like many other fans of Forteana, stumble across these fourth or fifth generation ‘synopses’ of the case, and every time I read a ‘new’ one, a little piece of me dies. So have I got your attention? Let me tell you briefly, right now, just what you, as someone with a genuine interest in the paranormal really need to know about the Highgate ‘vampire’ – and why it and the case still matter. It is, in this paranormal researcher’s opinion, an absolute travesty that the intense phenomena which is the supernatural backbone of the case of the Highgate ‘vampire’ as it has been labelled, has been overlooked by the majority of serious researchers for so many decades. This case has it all; documented sightings covering over half a century by viable witnesses, a frightening entity which appears to be able to manifest at will and to interact with the living, historical background to its haunts worthy of further research, environmental factors such as underground water sources and potential infrasound pollution, plus a plethora of strange effects upon people and electronic equipment of the kind frequently documented in extreme hauntings.

So why has it been marginalised to the backwaters of Fortean thought, and become a bête noire amongst cases which should be its peers – the Borley Rectory haunting and the Black Monk of Pontefract for example? The answer is simple and yet complex. Public relations. With the exception of the great Eric Maple who visited Highgate in 1971, few folklorists or paranormal researchers of note (with the exception of President of The British Psychic & Occult Society David Farrant) have attempted to conduct field research in the locale of Highgate Cemetery. Maple’s contemporaries who wrote about the case from a remote perspective, such as the late Peter Underwood, often produced ill-informed, salacious accounts influenced by the Hammer Horror-inspired wannabe vampire hunters of that era, and the popular press of the early 1970s. This fast made the Highgate entity a great money-spinner for those who considered paranormal authorship to be a lucrative career move, and a turn-off for many of those who approach such subjects with integrity. One popular narrative will have you believe, for example, that a real life vampire once made its home in the cellar of the mansion, which once stood on the land now occupied by the cemetery. This story, which was tellingly illustrated with a still from the film The Devil Rides Out, insists that a disciple of this vampire was eventually staked in the form of a giant spider, her Svengali having been staked and incinerated in its coffin in a back garden in nearby Crouch End. Bizarre as this may all sound today, many showmen during the early 1970s found fleeting fame through their self-proclaimed associations with the cemetery and its alleged vampiric occupants. As vandalism and ‘vampire hunting’ escalated at Highgate Cemetery, leading to the arrest and acquittal of David Farrant for the latter in 1970, and a prison term for the former in 1974, the case began to be treated more as a ‘human interest story’ than one of supernatural intrigue. And, until relatively recently, when members of The Ghost Club and the Society for Psychical Research began to revisit the story, this was still largely the case. Long before I wrote Haunted Highgate (2014) only one person had made it his business to collect first-hand accounts from witnesses and visit the locations of sightings in person –David Farrant, who was for many years considered as much a bête noire as the entity whose existence he still champions. And he would do so, as he was one of the paranormal investigators who saw it himself, one cold December night in 1969. Indeed it was his frequent nocturnal presence at the cemetery which led to what he still maintains was a wrongful conviction for tomb desecration, a shadow which to this day looms large over discussion of the case. And yet the local ghost, which had inadvertently inspired all this chaos, seems to quietly live on. So, decades later, where are we? And what interest should the case hold for open-minded readers of this magazine? It is after all just one of thousands of alleged ghosts to be found across Great Britain. But this is a case as yet unsolved, not a cold case, and not a cosy fireside ghost story. Let’s ignore the newspaper headlines and TV reports which some of you may remember for a while, and look back over some of the less hysteric but equally interesting encounters which underlie the whole shebang. Just what are we dealing with here? And how do vampires fit in, if at all?

KTPF Magazine

Issue 4 July 2015

What on earth can it be? And why is it here? Working out whether we have one, or two entities on our hands is the initial dilemma, and one, which remains a mystery. Rather like the classic shadow person archetypes, the sightings of tall dark figures in Swains Lane and Highgate Cemetery fall into two main visual categories. The first, and most common, are of a pitch black, amorphous form, which takes loose human shape, appears to float above the ground, and often has a preternatural, hypnotic gaze. The son of a local gardener who had official access to the cemetery, Paul Quinn, recalls the following story: “One winter evening in 1962 my father and his workmate were collecting the wood. It was a cold evening anyway but both of them felt chilled to the bone. Opposite them was a six foot wall, and they froze on the spot as both saw a hooded figure rising above this wall. My father described it as something with a conical head, rather like a monk’s hood.” Mr. Quinn Snr. is not the only person to have encountered this peculiar and alarming apparition; similarly shrouded (and tall) dark figures have been sighted by other witnesses including , an ex-army officer walking down Swains Lane in 1965, an old lady walking her dog past the main gates in the autumn of 1969, an accountant taking photographs near the cemetery’s Circle of Lebanon in the summer of that year, followed by three paranormal investigators passing the North Gate that winter, a group of five witnesses at a youth hostel overlooking the cemetery in early 1970 and a female motorist driving up the lane as recently as 2005. There are many more. A top hatted fiend? The second supernatural form which has been witnessed in Swains Lane is that of a well-dressed gentleman, also darkly garbed and extremely tall, but apparently invested with the powers of speech. Again, there are multiple examples, and here is just one. After midnight one hot August night in 2005, local resident Martin Trent was walking home down Swains Lane when he noticed ahead of him a man in a dark coat and what appeared to be a stove pipe type hat, standing by the East Cemetery gates. Eventually, as they drew level, Martin was appalled to hear the stranger hiss directly in his ear, despite the 10ft of lane which stood between them, “Good evening to you, sir.” Sensibly choosing not to reply, Martin continued down the lane until he reached the turning into his own street, Oakeshott Avenue. As Martin recalls: “Looking up the rise from where I was standing, he was now on the other side of the road, nearer to Highgate Cemetery West. From my position, given the camber of the lane, I couldn’t see his feet, but the next moment he seemed to glide at a right angle to me clean through the (locked) gates on the opposite side of the lane and disappear into the East Cemetery.”

Fortunately for his own sanity, Martin is not the only person to have encountered this tall-hatted spectre. In 1994 two trainee police officers were ambushed on the Swains Lane side of nearby Waterlow Park by what was described as a tall figure, wearing a dark coat and tall hat. It promptly vanished. Four years later Deborah Meredith, a taxi driver, was startled when she stopped to pick up a similarly old-fashioned dressed man by the North Gate, who vanished in her rear view mirror after failing to speak or move after she offered him a lift home. Are the two visual forms manifestations of the same entity? And does that theory suggest that it can pick and choose its appearance according to its mood, or that it is the relic of someone who once lived, who is over time losing touch with their human attributes? We just don’t know. Then there are the unclassifiable cases such as that of the young nurse en route to the Whittington Hospital one night in 1971, who was thrown to the ground in the middle of the lane by a tall dark figure, which vanished in the headlights of an approaching car. Because of the speed of the encounter, whether her assailant was shrouded or tall-hatted remains a mystery. Did the entity intend to knock her down, or was this caused by some explosive psychic force which it emanates? And if so, is this energy connected to the massive signal mast at the top of the lane? Questions, questions. What should perhaps be of interest to paranormal researchers is not just the variety of locations in which these entities manifest, but that they are sometimes observed to be stationary, hovering inside either gate, by the cemetery wall, or around the Lebanon Circle, and sometimes to be in motion, as per the unexpected visitation via the top floor window of the youth hostel. In the 1965 sighting, the entity didn’t materialise from thin air like one’s average ghost, but went one better and slithered over the cemetery wall only to then rear up to its full height before the terrified witness. This does not appear in the first analysis to be a ‘stone tape’ type replay. In this scenario, we potentially have rich pickings for enquiry into the possibility of sentient manifestations, which in turn leads us to the question of survival after death. We don’t know how long the site has been haunted, although there are strong suggestions that the disturbances predate the 1839 cemetery and have been on going since at least the early 1800s. If all of this is not decent material for a fresh investigation, I don’t know what is. So what on earth can it be? Well it sure as hell ain’t a vampire! If it was a vampire, analysing it would (funnily enough) be a lot easier, especially as along with most sane people I, like David Farrant, do not believe in them. What all these witnesses’ experiences have in common is the extreme sense of fear, which the entity seems to instil. That and the dream-like altered state of consciousness which often seems to affect witnesses for days afterwards, and the refusal of whatever aspect of the brain governs disturbing memories to block out recollections of the encounter unlike recollections of so-called vampiric encounters. All of that said, no witness I have ever interviewed remembers being bitten or seeing bared fangs going for their jugular! And there are zero accounts on record of vampire victims being discovered exsanguinated or bleeding to death in N6. But the name, sadly, has stuck.

So what sort of ‘ghost’ is it? What, readers, do YOU think it is? That is the major question being posed at The Highgate Vampire Symposium on 19th July 2015, the first full day event to examine this case in depth. As a personal challenge to other paranormal researchers and investigators I propose that if we seek to understand the nature of this entity we should be wary of ascribing motives to it. We need to emerge with this entity or entities from the shadow cast by Hammer Horror films and the fiction inspired by them and face supernatural incursions in Highgate face on (theoretically at least!). When we feel threatened or under attack we may, as human beings, lash out, but this does not make us monsters. The same applies to situations when some of us express anger because we feel upset. Why should ‘ghosts’ be any different? Is the entity bad – or just sad? Was it ever human at all? Could it be a thought form, created by ritual magickians using the cemetery? Or is it / are they interdimensional beings beyond our comprehension, which has also been suggested, creatures which have more in common with ‘shadow people’ or ‘the mothman’ than with shades of the deceased … the possibilities are endless! David Farrant will be speaking at the Symposium, and will be happy to answer any questions which attendees may pose for him regarding his research and personal encounter with the ‘ghost’. He is joined by several other witnesses, as well as paranormal author and researcher Paul Adams, John Fraser of the Society for Psychical Research, Dr. Jacqueline Simpson of The Folklore Society and a host of other experts as we attempt to unravel some of the mysteries which lurk beyond the Highgate ‘vampire’. See highgatevampire2015.uk for more information. We look forward to meeting many KTPF readers and listeners there on the day! Oh and by the way if you think the vampire theory holds any merit your views will not be disrespected or denigrated in the slightest at the Symposium – although you may well end the day with a changed perspective!

In June we were joined by Sue Kyng who talk to us about her Near Death Experience, how it affected her and how her life has been since her NDE. Sue has kindly allowed us to publish the introduction from her book - LOST IN SPACE AND TIME Since my Near-Death Experience, I have realized that we are spiritual beings on a physical journey. The reality is that we are mortal, and living in a physical world. Although the actuality of who we are is spiritual, the forever part that never dies. Ever since I was a child the physical body was an encumbrance to me. I needed to know who I was. Why did I hear and see my dead relatives? Why did my physical world feel so claustrophobic and heavy, both indoors and out? I was raised on religion and led to believe that everyone has a Soul that carries on living forever when the physical body is dead. Unfortunately, that was not enough proof for me. So I asked endless questions about the Soul, God, Jesus, Moses, Abraham, and anything else that didn’t quite make sense to me at the time! This was nearly sixty years ago! During those early years, my queries were frowned upon by the church - to be precise, the Vicar. Hence, I was asked to leave Sunday School for disrupting the class and asking too many questions beginning with why, especially ones that were asked with reference to the many discrepancies contained within the Old Testament. Later I was allowed back. However, it was with the proviso’ I behaved myself and listened! I even made a request to join the Bible study group? Allegedly I was far too young! I look back over that time in my life, and realise that I must have given in to the demands of the hierarchy and stopped listening to the deepest part of me. I knuckled down to what I was told, the right way to behave and believe; as a consequence far too many years living in fear and servitude! Fortunately for me, life has changed dramatically since my Near-Death Experience; I originally thought I’d been given another bite of the cherry, a second chance. Now I know it was all meant to be; a learning process; a quickening. There are no mistakes! Just different paths to go down; different doors to open; this is how we grow; this is how we gain knowledge. “Experience is knowledge! Everything else is only information.” - Albert Einstein. Before and since the fateful day I died, and experienced my Near-Death Experience, I have had a series of personal revelations. Many of which became apparent after my Dream-Walks, and following my visitations with a friend from the world of spirit, called Jacob. The paragraph below from Chapter One describes our amazing interaction. ‘As the sea of souls viewed me across the afterlife in a space where time was non-existent, I perceived a figure moving towards me, clothed in a dark robe, his face overflowing with love and kindness; the feeling was tremendous and not a particle was squandered, as we communicated for what seemed like an aeon. Strange thing is, I was in complete acceptance of the situation, and in my heart and mind knew exactly where I was. At last, I was home, but why now?’ 29

My mystical adventures have allowed me to feel and see, the enormous amount of energy available in the Universe, and appreciate what we have, and who we are! We are at a time when it is necessary for more people to recognise the same, and utilise the new universal energy that is now permeating this world, an essence of the energy I felt during my NDE, which ultimately will lead everyone to a newfound freedom! To do this, all I can do is suggest, we choose to learn to consciously fill up with this power. Conceivably this is a preferable alternative, to procuring energy from our fellow men, by stifling their power. The new energy permeating the cosmos is now filtering down and affecting our beautiful living planet; which signifies we are all moving towards a renewed spiritual awareness. Also, that which appears as our life moves too! This is because the outside world, our accepted reality is actually a perception, a projection of what we believe to be true. In other words, the physical third dimension we reside in is not the actuality of who we think we are. The actuality of who we are is Eternal. “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant, and has forgotten the gift.” - Albert Einstein. Jacob revealed the presence of beneficent Off-World Beings, who are helping to fight against the malevolent forces that one day wish to totally take over and dominate our planet. He said we must be open-hearted, for then no one will choose to take our light; for how can you take that which is freely given! The light is love; man’s greatest gift to man, originating from the Source. Over the years, I’ve been shown how we can find and retain our own Sacred Space; stay in our own good, and ways in which we can help one another. Recently I was guided to read Recently I was guided to read the statement below; it gave me confidence to persevere with this work. To a great many people, parts of my book may appear absurd and far-fetched, but it’s my story; my reality; my truth! A truth’s initial commotion is directly proportional to how deeply the lie was believed. It wasn’t the world being round that agitated people, but that the world wasn’t flat. When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic... - Dresden James Finally, I can see my path; the life I must lead to stay on course; the life I have chosen for myself before I was born! Ghost Club member Brian Langston Give us a story from his excellent book True Ghosts and Ghouls of Windsor & Eton

The following story is one which falls squarely in the category of cryptozoology and has never previously appeared in print as the witness was, until recently, a serving police officer and I have waited until her retirement and changed her name to preserve her anonymity. In the 1990s I was a Detective Inspector at Maidenhead and Gail Emptage was a level-headed and valued member of my team of specialist detectives. She had attended many violent and traumatic scenes in her career and as a professional witness, with many hours of courtroom experience behind her, her testimony could be relied upon without the slightest doubt as being reliable. All her past experience however did not prepare her for the night she was on uniform patrol and came face to face with ‘The Beast of Boulter’s Lock’. Maidenhead is known at the jewel of the Thames and there are few prettier places than Boulter’s Lock. It was in its heyday in Victorian and Edwardian days when thousands flocked to watch high society promenading along the towpath or indulging themselves on the water in an array of pleasure craft. Today it is still a popular spot for picnics and lazy summer afternoons. Boulter’s Lock sits on the edge of an exclusive residential part of Maidenhead with fine houses overlooking the Thames and conspicuous affluence is evident. The well heeled area was a magnet to thieves and keeping the crime rate down was an ongoing challenge. Gail was always up for a challenge and readily accepted the post as the dedicated Neighbourhood Officer for the ‘River Beat’ as it was known. One cold and damp night in February 1990, Gail was in uniform on a late night anti-burglary cycle patrol on her beat. She was coming to the end of her tour of duty and decided to do a final tour along the river. She cycled along Ray Mead Road which forms part of the main A4094 and follows the river from Maidenhead Bridge to Cookham. It was half past midnight and as silent as the grave with not a soul around as the mist blew across her path from the river. As she passed Boulter’s Lock she was startled by a sudden movement coming from the direction of the Thames towpath. The following passage is taken from a written account she made after the incident. “I was cycling along Ray Mead Road with the river to my right. I had just cycled past Boulter’s Lock when I heard something move on the riverbank. I saw what I thought was large shaggy dog. It was so big that my first thought was that it must be a St. Bernard. As it loped across the road 20 feet ahead of me, it was clearly illuminated by the street lighting and I could see it had the appearance of a huge wolf. It had a thick shaggy coat which was a dark grey in colour- the texture of its coat was not unlike the fleece of a ‘Herdwick’ Sheep. There was no doubt in my mind that it was solid and real.”

The creature ran into the mouth of the junction with Lock Avenue opposite, and then suddenly stopped; its ears pricked up almost as if it had just sensed her presence. Gail stopped her bike in the middle of the road and froze as the beast slowly turned its head in her direction and stared at her over its shoulder. Gail recalled; - “My blood ran cold. It had an air of arrogance and almost human intelligence. It had canine features with a long muzzle and upright pointed ears but what terrified me most were its eyes. They glowed with an intense yellowgreen luminosity and fixed their glare on me for several seconds. They were like two torch beams- nothing like any dog I had ever seen. It was almost daring me to approach. I don’t mind admitting I was terrified. I turned by bike round and pedalled as fast as my legs could carry me back to the police station. It was 10 years later, in November 2000 when two police officers at Windsor six miles away, completely unaware of Gail’s experience, had a similar encounter with a wolf-like creature seen at the edge at the Thames near to the Windsor Canoe Club. PCs Tom Walters and Lucy Palmer were on a routine patrol during the early hours of the morning and could not believe their eyes when they turned their panda car around in the car park at the Windsor Leisure Pool in Stovell Road. There, caught in the car headlights near the Canoe Club hut was the looming figure of an enormous wolf-like hound. Startled by their sudden arrival the beast turned and slowly loped away towards the river. It disappeared into the shadows leaving the bewildered officers wondering what they had just seen. Lucy said “It looked too big to be a dog and seemed irritated that we had disturbed it. It had an odd gait and walked towards the river where it vanished. Tom and I were dumb-struck and just looked at each other as if to say what the hell was that? There was no way either of us was getting out to check. It looked for all the world like a wolf so we made a note of it just in case but no-one else ever reported anything.” There are striking similarities in these reports seen by professional witnesses over a decade apart. Both were seen during the early hours of the morning near to the Thames towpath and the description of the beast as a wolf-like creature is common to both accounts. Needless to say reported sightings of large wolf-like creatures have not been widespread in the area, so it is highly unlikely that a wild beast is roaming free in the Royal Borough- albeit the former Windsor Safari Park did occasionally misplace the odd wallaby on occasions! A paranormal explanation is therefore perhaps more likely. When examining folklore records, these sightings invite obvious comparison with other phantom hounds such as the infamous ‘Black Shuck’ of East Anglia. The description given of ‘The Beast of Boulter’s Lock’ also matches the description of the notorious ‘Monster of Gevaudan’ which terrorised Southern France in the late 18th Century although thankfully less murderous than its Gallic cousin.

KTPF Magazine

Issue 4 July 2015

Maidenhead does however have it own ghostly legend of a ‘Hell Hound’ at Littlewick Green some 4 miles away from Boulter’s Lock. This creature has been most closely associated with the ancient woodland around Fiennes Farm and has variously been described over the centuries as the ‘White Hound of Feens’ or the ‘Black Hound of Fiennes’ depending on the account. In the mid 1980s a large white hound the size of an Irish wolfhound was seen running through the woods. The witness who saw it described the beast as vanishing instantly before their eyes as if it had run behind a black sheet. Whether the ‘Beast of Boulter’s Lock’ is connected to these legendary hounds or is an entirely different entity altogether remains uncertain. Has a gap in the space-time continuum allowed access of a cryptid from another dimension? As fanciful as this may sound and whether by coincidence or not, a bizarre time-slip was reported by a couple who claim they were transported back in time by just a few minutes, during a car journey to Marlow along this very road. The intriguing incident happened in broad daylight in 1993 further along the A4094, at the junction with Cookham High Street, just a mile and a half from Gail’s sighting. The couple were bewildered to arrive at this junction twice within the space of a few minutes even though it had been impossible for them to have accidentally doubled back to that point on that stretch of road. So perhaps something supernatural is going on at Boulter’s Lock. Certainly Gail was convinced that her close encounter was unnatural and it unnerved her so much that to this day she has never walked or cycled along that stretch of road again alone after dark.

Google earth photograph of the location where the sighting took place is shown at the link below

Aztec: The Original UFO Crash Story By Richard Thomas So entrenched has the 1947 Roswell crash become in the minds of many UFO researchers, that it is often overlooked that the Roswell incident was not actually the first crashed saucer story to enter the public consciousness. That distinction belongs to another alleged UFO incident in the New Mexico desert. This time near Aztec, a small town in the upper western portion of the state, hundreds of miles away from the Roswell crash debris field found by Mac Brazel’s on the Foster Ranch in the summer of 1947. In his 1950 bestselling book Behind The Flying Saucers gossip columnist Frank Scully alleged that a flying disk had been found on a ranch 12 miles from Aztec, New Mexico, in 1948, the year after the alleged Roswell crash. In Paul Kimball’s 2003 documentary Aztec 1948 UFO Crash UFO researcher Nick Redfern summed up the alleged events at Aztec: “The jest of the Aztec tale is that in 1948 a flying saucer complete with anywhere between 14 to 18 bodies crashed in Aztec, New Mexico and was recovered in high secrecy by the US government.” According to Scully he was told about the Aztec crash by a man he called “Dr. Gee”, who was supposedly a specialist in magnetic anomalies working for the US government at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where famously the Manhattan Project to develop the Atomic bomb had been centred. Dr. Glee explained to Scully that the alien vehicle used some kind of magnetic propulsion system to levitate and that this was the reason he was brought in by the US government.

Richard Thomas is a published author, freelance feature writer and columnist. He has appeared as a guest on the radio show Coast To Coast AM and written over 200 columns, feature articles and reviews on a wide range of subjects for the South Wales Evening Post, Swansea Life, Starburst Magazine, Fortean Times, Paranormal Magazine and many other publications. RICHARD THOMAS.COM

In his book and talks Scully claimed that Dr. Gee had been flown out by helicopter to the New Mexico desert in April 1948 to look at the wreckage of a flying saucer that had crashed there. The Doctor also allegedly told Scully that the deceased bodies of the spaceship’s alien crew, who were described as small humanoid beings just over three feet tall, were also found at the crash site. The bodies of these creatures were said to be hairless, with soft downy skin, and two of the crew may have still been alive for a short time after the impact of the crash. Later accounts of the Roswell incident would also involve the recovery of similarly described deceased alien beings. In their 1994 book The Truth about the UFO Crash at Roswell authors Kevin D. Randle and Donald Schmitt wrote: “Stringfield, from his sources, said that he was able to draw a number of conclusions. According to Stringfield, the beings are humanoid, three and a half to four and a half feet tall … There was no hair on the head … In fact, there isn’t much hair on the bodies.” As well as the biology of the aliens found at the two crash sites, there are also similarities between the Roswell debris found by Mac Brazel a year earlier and the lightweight but durable metal the Aztec saucer was said to be constructed from. The parallels between the alleged alien creatures and materials described by Aztec and Roswell witnesses are intriguing. In The Roswell Incident, published in 1980, the authors Charles Berlitz and William Moore even speculated that the Aztec crash story was a garbled version of the Roswell crash. 38

KTPF Magazine

Issue 4 July 2015

In Behind the Flying Saucers Scully wrote: “It looked like aluminium, but wasn’t of a metal known to this earth.” Another similarity to Roswell are the pictorial symbols similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics alleged to be on the inside of the Aztec craft. The son of Major Jessie Marcel, who was one of the men sent by Colonel Blanchard to investigate the debris found by Brazel on the Foster Ranch, also reported seeing strange purple writing that resembled hieroglyphics on pieces of the Roswell debris. In his book The Roswell Legacy published in 2007 for the 60th anniversary of the Roswell crash, Jesse Marcel Jr. described what he remembered being shown by his father back in July 1947. “As I looked at the piece, with the light reflecting on the inner surface, I could see what looked like writing. At first I thought of Egyptian hieroglyphics, but there were no animal outlines or figures. They weren’t mathematical figures either; they were more like geometric symbols-squares, circles, triangles, pyramids, and the like. Approximately one-fourth of an inch tall, they were imprinted on the inner surface of the beam, and only on one side. They were not embossed into the I-beam but seemed more like part of its surface.” The parallels between the alleged alien creatures and materials described by Aztec and Roswell witnesses are intriguing. In The Roswell Incident, published in 1980, the authors Charles Berlitz and William Moore even speculated that the Aztec crash story was a garbled version of the Roswell crash. There are some big problems with the credibility of the Aztec crash story, however. Scully’s book was debunked in two articles in True magazine published in 1952 and 1956. Written by San Francisco Chronicle reporter J. P. Cahn, the two articles revealed that Dr. Gee, who he named as Leo GeBauer, and Scully’s other main source Silas Newton, were in fact two slick oil conmen who had hoaxed Scully. The Aztec incident has been revived somewhat in recent years by a book by Scott Ramsey, a UFO researcher and successful businessman from North Carolina. One anomaly highlighted by Ramsey that should give sceptics pause for thought is a mystery road off of Hart Canyon which leads to what he believes was the crash site, a deforested area surrounded with trees with broken branches, as if something had flattened the area. The mysterious dirt road doesn’t appear on any road maps of the area until around 2003, and it is unknown where the road came from or who made it. Ramsey suggests that the road was made by military personnel attempting to extricate the Aztec saucer after it was forced to make an emergency landing at Hart Canyon. This might seem like wild speculation, however, there is some physical proof at the alleged crash site that something happened there in 1948. Adding to the mystery is a concrete slab sticking up out of the ground at the alleged crash site. Like the road there are no records or reason why it should be there in the middle of nowhere. Ramsey believes the slab was made by the military to support one of the legs of a crane used to carry out the crashed saucer. Laboratory tests have also shown that the concrete slab dates to around 1948, the year of the alleged saucer crash.

Charity paranormal investigation at The Block 2nd May 2015 An interesting and enjoyable evening of paranormal investigation at The Block in Burton-upon-Trent raised £500 for Staffordshire Air Ambulance. The event was organised by Taylor Made Paranormal with kind permission from Urban 6 Airsoft and The Block Paranormal. Members of UK Shadow Seekers and Eerie UK also attended the event. Activity experienced on the night included footsteps and taps heard, BB pellets being thrown, spikes on EMF meters, glass divination, table tipping and shadow movements. Some guests felt like they were being touched and affected by unseen forces. Contact was made with some of the ‘resident’ spirits and some guests received messages from loved ones. The Block never fails to deliver and an amazing donation from all involved for a fantastic charity. Thank you again to all, particularly Mark Warrier, Richard Hawkins, Annette Moss, Phillip Corns, Paul Taylor and Kathryn Mayer. Looking forward to the next one! Happy hunting!

Andy and Hannah Taylor – Taylor Made Paranormal.
