Take the Stress Out of

The fall season is the prime time for family photography with all the beauty our South Dakota landscape provides. But you might be one of those parents worrying about your kids not cooperating during your session. And trust me, I get it! I have two of my own, and the last thing I want to stress about is how they will act. Here are some reminders and suggestions I’ve found helpful over the years.

There’s more to this story! More tips and ideas from S. Kay Photography in the digital version of this story at www.thehoodmagazine.com. She is also the cover photographer for ‘hood. To learn more about her photo services, visit www.skayphotography.com!

by Stephany Kay, S. Kay Photography Prep your kids in advance. Tell your kids about the photoshoot and what to expect. Show enthusiasm and express why they are important to you and your family. An example: “Mommy loves your smile so much, and I miss seeing it while you’re at school. I’m so excited for you to help me pick some favorites from our session and hang them on the wall so I can still see your smile when you’re not home.” We all love to feel special, so reminding them of how special they are to you can help get them excited for this shoot. Bring some backups. Make sure you’re well prepared for photoshoot day. Bring along a change of clothes, snacks, their favorite toy, water, and diapers. That way, even if the unexpected happens, you’ll be ready for it! But let’s chat about what kind of snacks & drinks for a moment. Steer far away from colored candy and drinks. Trust me, you don’t want blue teeth in the photos. Some appropriate snack ideas include small packets of goldfish crackers, trail mix (with no M&M’s), dissolvable puffs or cheerios, water, and apple juice. Basically, anything that will not stain fingers, clothes, and teeth. Make it fun! Don’t be too serious during the session; let them have fun. The candid shots from that authenticity truly make for the best photos. Plan on doing something fun after the session so they look forward to the outing all day, like grabbing ice cream or going to the park. Trying to control the environment can be super stressful for all parties. If the kids are running around and your patience grows short, they will feed off that energy, which shows through the camera. Try to relax, let them play around, and burn off some excess energy. This can be an excellent time for the photographer to capture some of just mom & dad or individuals of the other kids. In my sessions, I often shoot when you least expect it to capture the genuine authenticity of your family, and those truly make for the best photos! l

Ready to GrowYour Family

According to the Sioux Falls Humane Society, these are the requirements you need:

• Must be able to pay the entire adoption fee at the time of adoption.

• Any current pets must be up-to-date on rabies shots.

When you are preparing to visit the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society adoption center, remember that you must be pre-screened before accessing the kennel area. Prior to your visit, we encourage you to check out preparingtoadoptwww.sfhumanesociety.com/ for all the critical information to help your adoption process go smoothly.

Another requirement that your family should keep in mind is you must spend a minimum of 20 minutes with the animal you are considering adopting. So be sure you give yourself ample time to go through the adoption process.

• SFAHS does not adopt out to homes where there are unfixed animals.

Did you know October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month? It makes sense since the Autumn season is the most common time for families to get a pet. Often busy summer schedules have calmed down, and the cooler weather offers an excellent opportunity to get outside for walks and playtime.

• Must provide photo ID and proof of address (i.e., utility bill).

Ultimately, if your family is ready to add a pet, whenever you choose to do so, adopting can be a great option. Whether it’s a dog, cat, or different small animal, your local shelters and rescues are wonderful resources to help make the process smooth and enjoyable during this exciting time for your family! l

With October right around the corner, it is the perfect time to learn about pet adoption! Plus, giving your family time to prepare for a new addition is always a great idea. So, what do you need to know about adopting a pet?

• Must be 18 years of age or older.

• If you rent, you must provide landlord information.

To do this craft at home, use a piece of cardstock or small canvas and draw a simple tree shape on it. If an older child is doing this craft, encourage them to draw or paint their own tree. Put some fall colors of paint on a plate and grab a pile of cotton balls and clothespins. Have your child pinch the cotton ball, dip it into the paint and dab it around the tree to create the effect of beautiful fall leaves.

Mini Donut Cereal Crunch

Nothing says fall quite like the warm scent of cinnamon. This delicious cinnamon and sugar treat is the ultimate snack your children will love to munch on! Melt ¼ cup of butter in a large bowl or pot. Stir in a ¼ tsp of vanilla. Pour in 4 cups of plain oat cereal. Gently stir to coat the cereal. Meanwhile mix ¼ cup of sugar and 1 tsp of cinnamon. Sprinkle cereal with the cinnamon and sugar mixture. You can do this in the large bowl or spread out on a sheet pan. Gently toss to evenly coat. Enjoy!

This fall craft is great for all ages, especially toddlers! Using a clothespin to pinch cotton balls is an excellent way for young toddlers to work on their pincer grasp, which is great development for things like holding a crayon or pencil!

The whole world is in front of me now, showing me what it has to offer. I just have to pick. “

appreciate Mizzou, especially when I learned of their opera program. The opera program intrigued me as someone planning on pursuing vocal music.

I was born in Indiana, so my first trip was a loop down to Missouri and back up through Indiana. I first toured Augustana University in Sioux Falls, which I was highly impressed with, and then we started our road trip. First, we went to the University of Missouri, or Mizzou, as is its nickname. It was huge. Bigger than any college or university in Sioux Falls. That can be a good or bad thing, depending on the person, but I want to go to a big school, at least I do right now. And Mizzou had me wide-eyed with a huge smile on my face from the moment we drove into

thought it wouldn’t be hard to decide where I would go to school. Now, however, I have to choose - and I can choose a school anywhere. I don’t need to stay at home. In fact, I think that the point is to not. I want to spread my wings, and I’d prefer to go to a bigger school where I can major in archaeology with a minor in vocal music. But finding this perfect school is hard, so that is why I have already started my college shopping and am looking at a lot of different schools.

And I definitely saw myself at Mizzou.

After we left Missouri, I visited Indiana University, which I thought I’d love, but I didn’t feel the fit, although the campus was gorgeous. Then was Purdue University, a big engineering school. I’m not planning on being an engineer, and in fact, math is my true weakness. But I still felt as if I could see myself there. Our tour guide even said that Purdue is known for engineering, but it offers much more.

by Isabella Savage exam conce

Finally came my long shot. The University of Notre Dame was seemingly perfect for me. I loved everything about it, except maybe the fact that I was walking through the University of Missouri campus with my parents after we had just finished a college tour. “You’re so lucky,” my dad told me. “I wish I had done all this or known that I had so many options when I was your age. I so wish that I was in your position again.” My mom agreed. “We just didn’t know we had all these options when we were your age,” she said.

The whole world is in front of me now, showing me what it has to offer. I just have to pick.

Everything about it made me feel at home, and at the end of the day, the fit of a college or university, I think, is one of the most critical aspects of a choice.

there is no Greek Life. I saw myself there, posing in front of Touchdown Jesus. It had the major I wanted. It had activities I enjoyed. The tour guide and the admissions counselor made it clear that Notre Dame was a very welcoming place with good people. Jackpot. But the acceptance rate is 15 percent. Could I get in? It will be hard. But I’m not going to give up. I am going to apply, and I’m going to try with my application. I won’t say, “It’s too selective. I probably won’t get in anyway.” Most kids have that mindset when going for a selective university, and for all of you who believe that, let me just say, you’re not going to get in if you believe you won’t. But you can have a good chance if you try. Write a detailed essay. Everyone can write a good essay; just make it about you was the advice of the admissions counselors at every school we visited. So, I’m going to try for Notre Dame and believe I can get in. After all the tours were over, and after we stopped for one night in Chicago after all the excitement, we drove home. My dad told me, “You know, you don’t have to go to college.” I was a bit surprised. Of course I don’t have to, but for the profession I’m interested in pursuing, I have decided to go to college. Archaeology is my dream, and that requires college. But he’s right. No one has to. To the people in my position right now, here’s my advice: try for a reach school and don’t think of it as a reach. If you decide to go to college, don’t waste your opportunity. There are so many options for schools out there. Also, go into the career you’re passionate about. Don’t go to college because your parents want you to. If the career you love doesn’t require college, don’t waste the money. You should do what you love, and not everything requires college. After all, the world needs welders just as much as it needs doctors. l

For 30 years, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has entertained families east of Sioux Falls. There have been many changes to the property over the years, but according to Owner Bruce Aljets, the keys to success have remained the same. “Providing an excellent experience still involves great activities, in a clean and well-kept environment.” Aljets said. “We’ve always focused on providing the best experience we can for our guests!”

There have been improvements every year and this year is no exception. Landscaping, a large concrete patio with extra seating, and sidewalk installation in the recreation space. Insured by NCUA Financial Journey EmpoweringYouonYour From the Crib to the Bed: How to YourTransitionChild by Sanford Health

Each child is unique when it comes to the perfect time to make the move to the “big bed.” While there are exceptions, most children should transition out of the crib between 18 months and three years. The right time is different for each child and each family. If your child can crawl out of their crib, they should move into a bed for their safety. Additionally, some families choose to make the move so the crib can be used for a sibling.

There are several options for toddler beds. Many cribs can transition to a toddler bed by lowering the mattress and removing one of the railings. Only do this if it is a part of your crib’s design. The crib mattress can move to the ground as a temporary option. Additionally, toddler beds are available. They fit crib-sized mattresses and are close to the floor. Toddlers can also be transitioned directly to a twin or full-sized bed. These mattresses can be placed directly on the floor. If you use a frame, place rails on both sides to ensure your child’s safety. Even if the bed is up against a wall, it is recommended to use a rail on both sides to prevent your child from becoming stuck between the wall and the mattress.

September 2022 | thehoodmagazine.com | 27

Let’s talk Before you make the transition, discuss it with your little one. Let them know the change is coming and incorporate them into the process. Let them help pick out new bedding. When it is time for the change, work to make this the only transition they are undergoing. Avoid making this change while potty training, starting a new school or daycare, or at the time of a new sibling’s birth. If a new sibling is coming along, try transitioning to the new bed at least two months before the baby’s arrival. Let them help you set up the new bed. Avoid simply moving the crib to another room. Try to disassemble it so it is not something your child can see anymore. If possible, place the new bed where the crib was previously positioned (you can rearrange it later). Double-check your toddler’s room to make sure it is childproof. If you haven’t already, this is a good time to ensure dressers are secure and outlets have covers, as your little one will have more access to their room than ever before.

If you have any concerns about your child’s ability to do well in the classroom, academically or socially, check in with your child’s teacher right away. Ask about expectations so that you can assist your child in understanding these expectations. Share your concerns; explain your goal to create a plan together to help your child be as successful as possible this school year.

Stick to a Routine

SchoolFamilyforStressDecreaseYourthisYear

To help the morning go smoothly, keep the same morning routine that includes breakfast, medication (if applicable), getting dressed, brushing teeth, and gathering needed supplies for the school day (backpack, library books, or tennis shoes for PE). Keeping this routine can assist you in staying more patient as a parent while you teach your child how to develop skills for taking responsibility for these tasks on their own, but this takes lots of practice and may take longer for some children.

The school year is back in full swing, which can mean a busy family schedule. Follow these tips for a smoother school year and less stress for your family. by Encompass Mental Health, LLC

If homework is a battle, consider adding a plan for homework completion during the afterschool or evening routine. Consider having a dedicated quiet space for schoolwork, breaks for snacks or a brain-break, and plans for how to organize homework for return to school. Check with your child’s teacher regarding how to turn homework in before developing your plan.

Overscheduling can lead to burnout, anxiety, and family stress. These activities are far more essential to your child’s development than extracurricular Selectactivities.activities based upon your child’s interests, strengths, and needs. Unless your child shows a learning deficit and needs additional academic supports, avoid using afterschool or weekend activities to fit in more academic activities; this is unnecessary and may actually be counterproductive to your goal. l

These install directly to your HVAC system and act as a moisture supply to your furnace blower. When the hot air blows through the bypass, it runs through a rotating wet pad. These connect to your home’s water supply and usually have a humidistat. Set the humidistat to the desired humidity, and the unit kicks in when the sensor drops below that level.

by Foley’s Heating & Air Conditioning

Here in South Dakota, we understand that with winter comes dry air. Our skin knows it, our respiratory system knows it, and wood surfaces know it. Along with the dry air outside, our homes become even drier thanks to our furnace.

Most of us, at one time or another, got familiar with a stand-alone humidifier. They work fine, but only for the immediate area it sits in, while taking up space and looking bulky. A furnace humidifier will distribute moist air throughout your home and won’t require constant filling with water. An HVAC humidifier only requires a check at the beginning and end of winter.

There are three primary types of furnace humidifiers: bypass/drum-style humidifiers, flowthrough units, and whole-home humidifiers. Humidifiers

Having a furnace humidifier adds moisture to the air, makes your home more comfortable, feels warmer without using more fuel, and reduces stuffy noses, sinus issues, and chances of developing a cold. So the answer to the question asked in the article title is a resounding “yes!” There are many different types of humidifiers, so it’s essential to understand each and how they differ.

These humidifiers work separately or with your furnace. They hook up to your home’s water supply, and the water is heated. It kicks on when the humidistat determines that the humidity is below your desired level. The humidifier will heat the water, convert it to steam, and pass it through your home’s ducts. This choice is excellent for larger homes and the best long-term solution to dry air. l

Whole-Home Steam Humidifier

Bypass/Drum

Flow-Through Unit For these, the unit will detect the humidity level in your home and kick on when necessary. When the humidifier comes on, it will draw water from your main supply to soak a water panel. The hot air will pass through the water panel and supply moisture to the home through your ducts. These humidifiers have no stagnant water for the pad to run through.

2. USE THE COLORS!

The deep, rich colors on the trees make the perfect backdrop. Dress in colors that compliment the gor geous landscape. When it comes to picking out an outfit, try and stay away from overly bright colors and neon.

1. RELAX Family photos can feel stressful. But remember often the most treasured photos are the least expected. Remember a picture should tell a story, so let those personalities shine.

The so-called “golden hour” in the photography world is the last hour before sunset. But here is the thing, this “hour” is not an hour. Really you might only get 20-30 min before the sunsets too much causing your photos to be darker than desired. So plan ahead, make sure you get ready to snap beforehand. Fall is nature’s time to show off, and with all those beautiful colors; it’s no wonder why it is a popular time for photos. Here are 3 tips to capture picture worthy moments this fall.
