Ready to Grow Your Family by Four Paws?

Did you know October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month? It makes sense since the Autumn season is the most common time for families to get a pet. Often busy summer schedules have calmed down, and the cooler weather offers an excellent opportunity to get outside for walks and playtime.

With October right around the corner, it is the perfect time to learn about pet adoption! Plus, giving your family time to prepare for a new addition is always a great idea. So, what do you need to know about adopting a pet?

According to the Sioux Falls Humane Society, these are the requirements you need:

• Must be 18 years of age or older. • Must provide photo ID and proof of address (i.e., utility bill). • Must be able to pay the entire adoption fee at the time of adoption. • If you rent, you must provide landlord information. • Any current pets must be up-to-date on rabies shots. • SFAHS does not adopt out to homes where there are unfixed animals. Another requirement that your family should keep in mind is you must spend a minimum of 20 minutes with the animal you are considering adopting. So be sure you give yourself ample time to go through the adoption process.

When you are preparing to visit the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society adoption center, remember that you must be pre-screened before accessing the kennel area. Prior to your visit, we encourage you to check out www.sfhumanesociety.com/ preparingtoadopt for all the critical information to help your adoption process go smoothly.

Ultimately, if your family is ready to add a pet, whenever you choose to do so, adopting can be a great option. Whether it’s a dog, cat, or different small animal, your local shelters and rescues are wonderful resources to help make the process smooth and enjoyable during this exciting time for your family! l
