Ontario Police Department takes delivery of third AS350 B2 Grand Prairie, Texas – American Eurocopter announced that the Ontario (CA) Police Air Support Unit has taken delivery of its third AS350 B2. The aircraft is scheduled to join the fleet in December when it will go into service performing patrol and surveillance missions for the City of Ontario, California. “The AS350 family of helicopters is recognized throughout the U.S. airborne law enforcement community as a powerful and reliable platform that provides the performance and flexibility for a variety of missions and environments,” says Ed Van Winkle, American Eurocopter’s Law Enforcement Market Manager. “The AS350 B2 has provided the Ontario Police Air Support Unit with nearly a decade of service with low maintenance requirements and low cost of operation.” Each of the Air Support Unit’s B2s are equipped with Spectrolab searchlights with 30 million candlepower, L-3/ Wescam forward looking infrared (FLIR), and avionics for communication and navigation. Seventy to 80% of the Unit’s missions are flown at night, so outfitting their helicopters with additional hightech equipment is a necessity, including NVG capability. Carrying a modern mission equipment suite may have been a problem for smaller, less powerful helicopters, but the AS350 B2 is able to do so with useful load to spare. “The AS350 B2 gives us the power, cabin size and flexibility we need to accomplish our missions,” said Sergeant Eric Weidner, Officer in Charge of the

Ontario Police Department’s Air Unit. “Because of these features, we have been able to create a spacious cockpit work environment even with all our advanced equipment, which allows our teams to operate at a higher level. The B2 is the right tool for the right job.” The Ontario Police Department’s Air Support Unit was founded in 1989 and it converted to Eurocopter and the AS350 B2 in 2002. In addition to performing the normal patrol and surveillance missions, the Unit’s helicopters also provide assistance to the Identification Unit for aerial photography, the SWAT Team for their specialized operations, the Detective Bureau, the Narcotics Unit, and they occasionally assist other agencies within the City of Ontario. American Eurocopter is the U.S. affiliate of Eurocopter, the largest helicopter manufacturer in the world, and a subsidiary of EADS North America Holdings, the North American operations of EADS, the second largest aerospace and defense company in the world. American Eurocopter is a helicopter manufacturer and markets, sells and supports the broadest range of civil and para-public helicopters offered by any manufacturer. The product line represents the most cost-effective, technologicallyadvanced helicopters, ranging from light single to heavy twin, serving all markets and missions. American Eurocopter’s headquarters and main facility are in Grand Prairie, TX, with a large manufacturing and production facility in Columbus, MS.

Isolair continues to grow GRESHAM, Ore. - Sales continued to grow significantly in 2011 for the Gresham, Ore. based ISOLAIR Incorporated. While fire-fighting systems made up the majority of these sales, ISOLAIR continues to manufacture an extensive and innovative line of custom equipment for commercial helicopters. Fire-fighting system sales were up from 2010 at ISOLAIR. Complementing this growth, the agricultural application industry has provided sales that have nearly doubled those from years past. With over 25 innovative models to choose from, ISOLAIR remains a driving force in the helicopter industry, as it has been for the past 30 years. The agricultural application industry continues to grow rapidly. Nearly 25 percent of crop applications come from the air. 309 million acres of cropland are currently being treated with crop protection products. 77 million of these acres are treated via aviation. While only 12 percent of these applications currently come from helicopters, the trend

continues to move towards smaller, more maneuverable aircraft. Thus, helicopters, and ISOLAIR alike, are right where they want to be, positioned to propel the industry throughout the next decade. ISOLAIR recently announced new additions to their agricultural application industry line. This includes ISOLAIR’s 3900-480 Innovator II for Enstrom model 480 helicopters, which is FAA and EASA approved and in the process of attaining CAAC certifications. The 3900-480 Innovator II has an external bellymounted fiberglass tank, which holds up to130 gallons. Encompassing 53 nozzles spread precisely over 29 feet, the 3900480 has outboard booms that can be easily adjusted to create the desired flow. Also in the process of achieving FAA and EASA certifications is the ISOLAIR 3900-205 Innovator II for Bell model 205/212/UH-1H helicopters. The 3900-205 Innovator II has one of the largest system capacities on the market, holding upwards of 350 gallons when fully utilized. Easy to install and control,

the 3900-205 allows the helicopter to spray at an air speed of 90 MPH. The 3900-205 has adjustable swath lengths ranging anywhere between 60 and 150 feet.

The 3900-205 Innovator II has one of the largest system capacities on the market ISOLAIR is currently developing their 3900-206LR Innovator II for Bell model 206LR helicopters, as well as the 3900280 Innovator II for Enstrom models 280 and F-28F helicopters and the 3900-R44 Innovator II for Robinson R44 helicopters. ISOLAIR also announced its expanded line of ULV systems used to apply chemicals in mosquito latent areas. The helicopter remains a safe, reliable,

and cost-effective alternative to the standard fixed-wing aircraft often used in the aerial application industry. Yet the helicopter is just a tool. As an industry, producers like ISOLAIR and consumers must work together to further prove that the helicopter is the very best tool for the job, both here in the states and throughout the world. ISOLAIR remains committed to providing innovative solutions for every possible commercial helicopter need. Their knowledgeable sales staff is available around the clock to answer your questions and find the system that best suits you. Please contact ISOLAIR anytime, or visit them online at isolairinc. com. Michael, Terry, and the friendly staff look forward to hearing from and seeing you soon.

For 25 years, ISOLAIR has been manufacturing quality helicopter systems for the fire fighting, forestry and aerial application industries with an extensive line of certified and custom built helicopter equipment. ISOLAIR has the right system to fit your company’s needs and helicopter alike. From agricultural spray systems and bucket spreaders to fire fighting systems, forestry grapples and torches, ISOLAIR has the product for you! With competitive pricing, quality assurance, easy to install products and an ongoing commitment to customer service, we invite you to contact us. Our knowledgeable sales staff is ready to answer your questions and advise you on the ISOLAIR system that will best meet your company’s requirements.

Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. responds to customer survey Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc. (SB47), OEM for the Model 47 helicopter, announce a reduction of their Main Rotor Blade spares pricing to $45,000 per blade, -13 & -21, and $45,500 for the -23. This reduction is driven by the customer survey responses received over the past 6 months and is afforded by their re-sourcing efforts to establish a new blade manufacturer. “The response to our customer market survey has been outstanding, with over 200 owner/operators providing input.” stated Neil Marshall, SB47 General Manager. He went on to explain “We asked our customers for their feedback in regards to maintenance costs, parts pricing & product improvements, and the resounding response was that blade pricing was too high. After an extensive sourcing program we are close to announcing the new blade manufacturer, and this now allows us to publish the new price for blades which reflects a 30% saving on the most recent list price.” The market survey has reinforced SB47 President & Owner Scott Churchill’s belief that the Model 47 still has a place

in the rotorcraft market. He stated that “Over 80% of customers indicated they would be interested in an upgrade to their aircraft, and almost 70% said they would be interested to purchase a brand new Model 47 in the next 1-5 years, rather than purchase a competitor aircraft. Ensuring we have the right spare parts on the shelf remains our #1 priority but we are reviewing what improvements would be required to make the Model 47 competitive again. Discussions with the FAA & the supply base are very encouraging. If we can satisfy the customer demands for reduced maintenance costs and refresh the aircraft but keep the price competitive, then it’s clear the customer demand is there.” Scott’s – Bell 47, Inc.’s blade pricing is effective immediately. Neil Marshall clarified “we have stock of the -13, -21 & -23 blades, but it is limited and our new source will deliver brand new blades starting in Q2 2011. So we encourage our customers to purchase blades earlier rather than later to ensure availability.”

You know the importance of delivering suitable lubrication to the #6 & #7 bearings. However, are you sure that the Oil Nozzle in your Model 250 turbine is doing its job? Let us help. Our unique flow and target validation fixture takes the guess work out of the question. Our fixture will flow & target check your nozzle. At H.E.R.O.S. every #6 & #7 Oil Pressure Nozzle (new or otherwise) must meet the factory parameters for flow and target before it is placed into our inventory or returned to service.

Flow and Target Check Program Beginning September 2011: Every Model 250 Series II turbine exchange, repair

or overhaul will include a Spare Oil Nozzle (either OEM or PMA) as part of our installation kit. So that when you reach your 300 hour inspection, simply exchange the installed nozzle with the H.E.R.O.S. certified spare. Send us the removed nozzle in the pre-addressed shipping box for cleaning, inspection & recertification. We will return to you, ready for the next 300 hour inspection. Think of the time you will save and the peace of mind you will gain. One more reason why H.E.R.O.S. Inc. is an industry leader in the repair and overhaul of the Model 250 turbo-shaft engine and why we say: “…..from our hands to your engine: Quality, Integrity, Service” Call us today for a quote on this test……both you and your turbine will be happy you did.

Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) works to ensure the helicopter industry’s future success and to preserve its rich past. Last year, HFI awarded 18 scholarships: Commercial Helicopter Rating Scholarships (4), Maintenance Technician Certificate Scholarships (6), Bill Sanderson Aviation Maintenance Technician Scholarships (7) and one Michelle North Scholarship for Safety, to attend courses at various institutions throughout the U.S. HFI would like to build on that success and expand its scholarship offerings for this year. The Lightspeed Aviation Foundation will award a $10,000 grant to the top five vote getting aviation charities. HFI would like to be one of those lucky top five charities. Your vote can help HFI sponsor additional helicopter pilot and maintenance scholarships! Over the past few months, HFI has made a number of requests for your vote, and has received a great response. However, it is vital that, within these last few weeks, we get votes from everyone who has not yet lent their support by voting. HFI urgently needs your help, as the voting nears its conclusion. ntsb reports NTSB Identification: *WPR11LA303* Date: July 03, 2011 Location: Brentwood, CA Aircraft: Arrow Falcon Exporters OH-58C Injuries: 1 Serious. An Arrow Falcon Exporters, Inc., OH58C helicopter sustained substantial damage when it impacted terrain near Brentwood, California. The pilot was seriously injured. Witnesses stated that they observed the helicopter make several application passes over a corn field. They heard a noise, but did not observe the impact sequence. NTSB Identification: *ANC11IA059* Date: July 04, 2011 Location: McGrath, AK Aircraft: HUGHES 369 Injuries: 3 Uninjured.

A high skid-equipped Hughes 500D (369D) helicopter sustained minor damage following a loss of engine power and subsequent emergency landing, about 3 miles southwest of McGrath, Alaska. The pilot and the two passengers were not injured. A postincident inspection of the helicopter disclosed damage to the main rotor blades. The operator’s director of operations reported that as the pilot began a gradual descent to the McGrath Airport, the engine sound changed abruptly, which was immediately followed by the engine out audio horn, and a red engine out annunciator light. The pilot entered an emergency autorotation. Just before touchdown, the pilot flared the helicopter above the trees to slow the ground speed, and to attempt cushion the landing.

During the descent, the helicopter’s main rotor blades struck several small trees as it touched down. The helicopter was equipped with a Rolls-Royce 250-C20 series engine. After the helicopter was recovered, a postincident inspection of the helicopter’s engine revealed a fractured Pc line attached to a T fitting on the engine governor. An NTSB examination of the fractured Pc line is pending. NTSB Identification: *ERA11LA380* Date: July 04, 2011 Location: Lakewood, NJ Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R44 Injuries: 2 Uninjured. A Robinson Helicopter Company R44 landed hard during a hovering autorotation at Lakewood Airport (N12), Lakewood, New Jersey. The helicopter sustained substantial damage, and the pilot and one passenger were not injured. The pilot stated as he lifted to a hover and began to move forward, he lost complete anti-torque control. The helicopter began to spin to the right,

and he applied full left pedal input but the spin continued. He maneuvered the helicopter away from nearby aircraft and into a clear area where he executed a hovering autorotation. Upon touchdown, the skids spread and the occupants exited the helicopter. NTSB Identification: *CEN11FA468* Date: July 09, 2011 Location: Rising Sun, IN Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter Co. R44 II Injuries: 1 Fatal. A Robinson R44 II sustained substantial damage when it impacted trees and terrain near Rising Sun, Indiana. The pilot was fatally injured. The flight departed from the Georgetown Scott County Airport (27K), Georgetown, Kentucky, about 0900, and was en route to the Anderson Municipal Airport (AID), Anderson, Indiana. The accident site was near the top of a ridgeline west of the Ohio River. Witnesses reported observing dense ground fog along the river and near the accident site at the time of the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board makes the following recommendations to the Federal Aviation Administration: Require Robinson Helicopter to resolve the root cause of the mast-rocking vibration in the main rotor assembly to ensure that all applicable R44 helicopters are free of excessive vibrations in all flight regimes, as required by 14 Code of Federal Regulations Section 27.251, “Vibration.” (A-11-82) Require Robinson Helicopter to maintain a database of all reported incidents of mast rocking in the main rotor assembly of R44 helicopters. (A-11-83) Require Robinson Helicopter to issue a service letter to all approved service centers describing the mast-rocking vibration that can occur in the main

rotor assembly of R44 helicopters and instructing service centers to report all incidents of mast rocking to the manufacturer. (A-11-84) Require Robinson Helicopter to amend the R44 helicopter flight manual to inform pilots of the potential for mastrocking vibration in the main rotor assembly and how to safely exit the condition. (A-11-85) Require that the Robinson Helicopter R44 pilot training program be revised to provide pilot instruction in the recognition and mitigation of in-flight mast-rocking vibrations in the main rotor assembly. (A-11-86) The complete recommendation letter is available on the Web at www.ntsb.gov/ doclib/recletters/2011/A-11-082-086.pdf

NTSB Identification: *ERA11LA392* Date: July 10, 2011 Location: West Palm Beach, FL Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R22 BETA Injuries: 1 Minor,1 Uninjured. A Robinson R22 BETA was substantially damaged during an autorotation, following a system malfunction during initial climb from Palm Beach

International Airport (PBI), West Palm Beach, Florida. The certified flight instructor (CFI) was not injured and the student pilot incurred minor injuries. According to the CFI, he and the student pilot performed five or six quick-stops. They then proceeded with a normal takeoff. About 200 feet above the ground, the helicopter yawed right, which was unable to be corrected with left pedal input. The CFI then entered an autorotation as the helicopter continued to yaw right. He also observed that the horizontal and vertical stabilizers had separated from the tailboom and were falling to the ground. According to an FAA inspector, a fuel cap separated and lodged in the tail rotor system, resulting in a loss of tail rotor thrust. The helicopter subsequently spun during the autorotation and landed hard. During the impact, the tail rotor separated and the fuselage sustained substantial damage. NTSB Identification: *WPR11WA332* Date: July 11, 2011 Location: Burma, PO Aircraft: SIKORSKY S76 Injuries: 3 Fatal,2 Serious,4 Uninjured. A Sikorsky S76C++ collided with the sea near Kanbauk, Burma. Helitech Duxford 2011—Helitech has formed its first Steering Committee to help ensure that the event continues to reflect the needs and aspirations of the rotary wing industry in future years. With the event celebrating its 25th year of supporting the rotary wing arena this year, the aim is to continue to shape Helitech to meet the requirements of all parts of the helicopter supply chain during the next quarter of a century. To create a broad, yet still focused, spread of opinion, the 13-strong panel covers representatives from all areas of the rotary wing supply chain. The world’s four main OEMs – AgustaWestland, Eurocopter, Sikorsky and Bell Helicopter – are all involved, as well as operators such as Bristow Helicopters and Sloane Helicopters. Rolls-Royce will add its engine manufacturing expertise to the mix while other key supply chain players include Specialist Aviation Services, L-3 Wescam and Hayward Aviation Finance. The head of the Helicopter Club of Great Britain is also on board to add in an important pilot and helicopter owner perspective. The Steering Committee will be chaired by Helitech’s Exhibition Manager, Brandon Ward, with Peter Norton, CEO of the British Helicopter Association (BHA) as the co-chair. Its inaugural meeting will be held on 26

September, the day before Helitech 2011 opens its doors. Brandon Ward said: “Several of Reed Exhibition’s events already have Steering Committees; these bring great benefits to the exhibitions they advise on. Although we seek regular exhibitor and visitor feedback regarding Helitech, having a Steering Committee means we can track industry trends and opinions far more closely during the entire show cycle; it’s also an excellent way for us to test out new ideas and possible future events on some of the movers and shakers in the rotary wing arena, before introducing them to a wider audience.” Fiona Macleod, European Commercial Manager at Bristow Helicopters, said: “I am honoured to be representing Bristow Helicopters on the first Helitech Steering Committee. This is a great opportunity for Bristow to be involved in helping shape the future development of Helitech, as well as being able to work closely with some of the industry’s leading figures to share and exchange ideas about the rotary wing marketplace.” For more information on members of the Steering Committee visit www. helitechevents.com/committee This year’s Helitech takes place from 27 to 29 September at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, near Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
