Old friends by Jerry Trimble flight. My accomplices were Don Shear, As a measure of something’s quality or who is currently flying 500s in Hawaii worth you could safely use longevity as and Frank Tucker who is currently a yardstick. I am lucky to own and fly working for MD Helicopters. I show a Robinson R-22 that has an early serial that we spent 2 hours of maintenance number. N9015V was the 11th R-22 to flight time to get S/N 011 smoothed roll off the assembly line in Torrance, out. I never knew where S/N 011 went, California on January 19, 1980. What because my intentions had turned to S/N makes this fact special to me is that I 012. Those early days were busy days had been hired by Frank Robinson in for everybody at Robinson Helicopter 1979 to work for him as a mechanic. I Company. was fresh out of A&P school and as green Fast forward 27 years - I am looking a helicopter mechanic as a Wenatchee for a helicopter to buy and I see my old apple. Frank had me assigned to work friend, S/N 011, for sale. I don’t know with Dave Akamine who was one of the what S/N 011 had done since we parted first mechanics at Robinson Helicopter ways, but I do know that the helicopter Company. Dave would try to keep me was featured on an early Sporty’s video, out of trouble. “So You Want To Fly Helicopters”. break 10,000 flight hours. From our research, we have found that R-22 S/N 001 is at the factory, and S/N 002 is at the Smithsonian. The only other US registered R-22 with an earlier serial number is S/N 007, which we located in Worley, Idaho with less time than ours. So, the best we can tell, S/N 011 is the oldest, highest time US registered R-22. We also own ship S/N 4168. I think it’s a real advantage for an operator operating a fleet of Robinson R-22s, that most of the parts that fit the later serial numbers

will also fit an early one. This proves to me again, what a durable product Frank Robinson and the factory have continued to produce. So, 27 years, 10,000 hours, and a lot of grey hair later, S/N 011 and I have both aged, but the R-22 holds the advantage – not only is she in better shape than I am, but she can go in for an overhaul and new paint job! It’s always comforting to meet and fly with, an old friend… I’ve got to go now, bingo is going to start any minute.

Garmin Pilot aviation app brings the Garmin experience to mobile devices ™

Offers intuitive navigation, charts, flight planning and filing capabilities OLATHE, KS — Garmin International Inc., announced Garmin Pilot, a new aviation app for iOS® devices, including the iPad and iPhone®, and Android™-based mobile devices. The app brings Garmin’s industryleading aviation features to tablets and smart phones, offering pilots complete navigation, trip planning, DUAT(S) filing, weather and electronic flight bag capabilities. “From integrated flight decks to mobile apps, Garmin is committed to providing our customers with a broad suite of best-in-class products,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin’s vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “Garmin Pilot is the perfect complement to our extensive line of avionics products and services. And because it incorporates the intuitive pilot interface, easy-to-use menu icons and many of the same great features from our

other popular systems, pilots will find it very familiar and easy to use.” Garmin Pilot’s powerful capabilities start with pre-flight planning, providing the information pilots need to make betterinformed flight decisions. With access to the most comprehensive aviation weather information for the U.S. and Canada, pilots can check NEXRAD radar, visible and infrared cloud imagery, METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, PIREPs, NOTAMs, winds and temperature aloft, TFRs and lightning data. Pilots can also overlay weather on the map, add text-based weather widgets and use the NavTrack feature to look ahead along the planned route to preview weather conditions. Using their DUAT(S) account, pilots can receive and log FAA-approved weather briefings that meet legal briefing requirements. Additional pre-flight planning tools available with the app include access to the AOPA Airport Directory, fuel pricing information to help plan refueling stops,

as well as built-in calculators to estimate fuel burn, enroute legs and arrival times. With Garmin Pilot, users can easily enter a flight plan and view it on the map screen. From there the app allows the pilot to overlay weather, pan across the entire route, pinch-to-zoom or graphically modify any leg of the flight. When the flight plan is ready, Garmin Pilot makes it simple to file, amend and close the flight plan via DTC DUAT or CSC DUAT(S). For frequently traveled flights, Garmin Pilot saves all flight plans within the app so they can be easily accessed and filed again in the future. Using the built-in GPS receiver or compatible external receiver (sold separately), Garmin Pilot provides full enroute navigation capability on its moving map, while showing ETE, ETA, crosstrack error, distance to waypoint and current position. Pilots can also navigate with Garmin’s patented Panel Page, a GPS-derived instrument pack that displays a graphical HSI directional display and indicators for groundspeed, altitude and vertical speed. After takeoff, pilots can continue to view real-time weather information by wirelessly connecting to XM WX Satellite Weather through the Baron Mobile Link™ paired with a satellite weather receiver (sold separately, subscription required). Electronic flight bag capabilities help minimize the amount of paper needed for navigation reference in the cockpit. Garmin Pilot includes IFR high and low enroute charts, VFR sectionals and Garmin FliteCharts®. Optional georeferenced FliteCharts and SafeTaxi® diagrams are available to assist in navigating approach procedures and unfamiliar airports, and all charts can be downloaded to the device for easy access while in flight. Garmin Pilot is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play, formerly the Android Market, as a free download for the first 30 days. After that, pilots can pay a monthly fee of $9.99 or an annual subscription of $99.99. Pilots can upgrade the standard FliteCharts to georeferenced FliteCharts for an additional $49.99 annually. Geo-referenced SafeTaxi diagrams are available for an additional $29.99 annually. Customers

who currently subscribe to Garmin Pilot My-Cast can upgrade to Garmin Pilot for free by downloading the update in the App Store or Google Play. Features vary based on mobile platform. the anatomy of

aviation insurance

Subrogation and the non-owner - renter pilot Subrogation is the right that every insurance company reserves in all insurance policies to recover losses from a third party deemed to have contributed to the loss. In many cases that third party is the non-owner pilot whether the pilot is named, renting or borrowing the aircraft. In a recent aviation insurance publication, the question was posed “Will the (insurance) company subrogate against a named, non owner pilot?” The answer was, “ Maybe.” Just because a pilot is named in the policy, does not negate the insurance company’s “Rights of Recovery.” They stated further that

they reserve this right “in the event someone other than the named insured damages the aircraft.” Aircraft insurance is carried by the party that normally has care, custody, and control of the aircraft, is responsible for maintaining the airworthiness of the aircraft, and has dispatch authority whether that be an owner or a lessor. A non-owner pilot is the pilot named on the insurance policy other than the owner, a pilot using the aircraft under the open pilot warranty (permissive pilot), or a renter. Is the renter pilot covered by insurance when an aircraft is rented from an FBO

or Flight School? The short answer is “not necessarily.” Some flight schools and FBO’s offer their renters some protection through a non-owned aircraft liability clause in their insurance agreement. This coverage is usually part of their liability limit and is expensive. In addition it provides only partial coverage for the renter. For instance, if the school was covered for liability for $1 million, the renter might be covered for $100,000, leaving $900,000 of coverage for the flight school. This still does not protect the renter pilot from liability damages beyond $100,000, nor does it afford the

renter pilot protection for damages to the aircraft being flown. The non-owner pilot that is often overlooked is the named pilot. Unless the pilot is a full time employee of the aircraft owner, he or she is still subject to the insurance company’s rights of recovery. Remember, the insurance company’s contract is with the purchaser of the insurance policy, or named insured. So, whether you are using an airplane with permission or a professional pilot working under contract, you may be subject to subrogation. What protection options does a non-

owner pilot have? The good news is that there are several easy remedies. First, for the contract pilot, the aircraft owner or named insured can have the pilot added as an “additional insured” and purchase a “Waiver of Subrogation” from the insurance company for the named pilot. This is could cost up to 10% of the hull damage premium prorated on a yearly basis. However, as a practical matter it is negotiable. Many companies will do it for a nominal charge or free to accommodate an improvement in aviation risk management for their customer. The other option available to the renter and permissive pilot is to purchase what is termed “Personal Non-owned Aircraft and Hull Liability” insurance. It is like purchasing aircraft insurance without the aircraft. Just like aircraft insurance, it comes in two parts: liability and physical damage. Liability coverage of $1Million dollars limited to $100,000 per person bodily injury can be purchased for a yearly premium of a little as $190. This covers any damage to a third party excluding damage to the aircraft being flown. Hull coverage is available by adding physical damage liability to the policy at an additional premium. Over the last several years “NonOwned” insurance providers have expanded their coverage to include Neglegent Instruction (CFI insurance), and non-owned insurance for piston helicopters.. With the exception of the CFI insurance, the “Personal Non-owned” policies are designed for primarilty non-professional pilots flying other aircraft on a persmissive basis. Professional pilots, pilot services companies, flight schools and other commercial operators have other options available that are designed for commercial operations. This is a general overview of a very complex subject. Everyone’s situation is different. Don’t be in doubt about your aviation insurance coverage. Whether you’re an aircraft owner or non-owner pilot, consult with your professional aviation insurance agent about your specific circumstances. Getting the protection you need may be a simple phone call away and may be more affordable than you think… just in case your next flight doesn’t go as planned. Jim Gardner is a retired U. S. Enstrom 480B agricultural spray system certified in China

Menominee MI—Enstrom Helicopter Corporation and Isolair Inc. recently received Chinese certification for the Innovator II 3900-480 spray system. The lightweight system fits all Enstrom 480 and 480B models, and can be quickly installed or removed for ease of use. The launch customer in China for the Isolair spray system was long time Enstrom customer Wuhan Helicopters, who recently purchased a new 480B helicopter specifically for agricultural spraying. “We see a lot of potential in the agricultural spraying market,” said Enstrom’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Tracy Biegler. “The combination of the 480B’s low costs, rugged construction, and safety, along with the efficiency and ease of use of the Innovator II system make for an attractive package. Operators in North America and Europe are already seeing this, and we are excited to be expanding into the Asian market.” “The 480B is proving to be an excellent spraying helicopter, and it is very versatile,” noted Michael Powell, President of Isolair. “With easily changed nozzles and a flow control right in the cockpit, the operators can tune the system for whatever they are spraying. We designed it to be easy to install and remove so that the operators can use the aircraft for other purposes when not spraying. The 120 gallon tank mounts under the belly, and the entire assembly, pumps, booms, etc… all attaches with only a few quick disconnect pins.” Founded in 1959, Enstrom Helicopter

Corporation manufactures a complete line of helicopters. The three-seat, pistonpowered F28F and 280FX are popular training, sport, and light commercial aircraft. The larger turbine-powered 480B is available as a three-place advanced trainer and patrol aircraft, a 2+2 four seat training helicopter, or as a three

to five place executive transport. For law enforcement applications Enstrom produces an optionally equipped variant of the 480B, known as the Guardian, and the F28F, called the Sentinel. Enstrom can be found on the Internet at www. enstromhelicopter.com.

Smoke gets in your eyes Even though flame-retardant materials and improved fire-extinguishing systems have made inflight fires a rare occurrence. Extinguishing the fire obviously is first priority, but smoke inhalation is a very real danger. In fact, inhalation of the toxic gases in smoke is the primary cause of fatalities in most fires. Smoke gases do not need to reach lethal levels to seriously impair pilot performance. Knowing what to do is crucial, and the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute’s (CAMI) piloteducation brochure on this topic is a great source of information. Here are the key points:

Smoke and Smoke Gases The smoke composition and heat from a fire vary with the type of burning materials and environmental conditions. The two principal toxiccombustion gases from smoke are carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Irritant gases, such as hydrogen chloride and acrolein, are generated from burning wiring insulation and some other cabin materials.

Smoke Effects For many reasons, smoke is bad news for pilots. Visual smoke can make it more difficult to escape. Irritant gases can induce tears, pain, and

disorientation. The toxic gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, can cause physical incapacitation and death. As you may remember from ground school, carbon monoxide combines with the hemoglobin in blood and interferes with the oxygen supply to tissues. Hydrogen cyanide inhibits oxygen utilization at the cellular level. Even relatively innocuous fire gases, such as carbon dioxide, can be harmful, because CO2 increases the respiration rate, which can increase inhalation of other combustion gases. The decreased oxygen level in most fire scenarios compounds the problem of getting enough oxygen to maintain normal function.

absorb water-soluble toxic gases, such as hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride, so bottled water should be another item for your on-board emergency equipment kit. Another action to consider in advance is cabin venting. Venting will reduce the concentration of combustion gases, but remember that it may not be a viable option while actually fighting the fire. For more information on this subject and other important topics, take a look at the CAMI brochures at http://www.faa.gov/pilots/safety/ pilotsafetybrochures/. Good health and safe flying! Dr. Tilton received both an M.S. and a M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico and an M.P.H. from the University of Texas. During a 26-year career with the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Tilton logged over 4,000 hours as a command pilot and senior flight surgeon flying a variety of aircraft. He currently flies the Cessna Citation 560 XL.

Planning the correct actions in advance will greatly increase your chances of survival, if you experience an in-flight fire. Extinguishing the fire is obviously a top priority, so a small, handheld fire extinguisher should be standard equipment on your aircraft. If your aircraft does not have selfcontained breathing masks, be sure that your equipment includes a cloth for each person on board. A cloth held over the nose and mouth can provide protection from smoke particulates. Wetting the cloth will allow it to

Blue Hawaiian orders 20 EC130 T2 Aircraft At the Heli-Expo launch of Eurocopter’s new EC130 T2 helicopter, American Eurocopter announced that Blue Hawaiian Helicopters has ordered 20 of the updated EC130 model that has made a name for itself in the United States in a variety of industries, particularly the aerial tour industry. The agreement with Blue Hawaiian includes 10 firm orders with options for 10 more. These helicopters will be used as part of an ongoing fleet replacement program. “Blue Hawaiian was our first EC130 customer, and we welcome them as one of the launch customers for the EC130 T2. They have been a leader in promoting innovations and implementing quiet technology rotorcraft in the air tour industry,” said Marc Paganini, President and CEO of American Eurocopter. “We value the trust they have placed in Eurocopter products and our company, and we will continue to work with them as they enhance their fleet.”

Blue Hawaiian was the launch customer for the EC130 in 2001. Since that time the company has logged more than 425,000 flight hours on its allEurocopter fleet that includes EC130’s and AS350 helicopters. “We were happy to work with American Eurocopter on the launch of the first EC130, and we are excited to continue to work with them as we update our fleet with the new EC130 T2,” said Dave Chevalier, owner and CEO of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. In addition to being the launch customer for the EC130, Blue Hawaiian also gave the aircraft its “Eco-Star” designation, in reference to its ultra-quiet, eco-efficient operation. These two key features have helped the EC130 become the aircraft of choice for the air tour industry. The EC130 product line offers increased cabin space, improved visibility through a wrap-around glass cockpit,

state-of-the-art avionics, and Eurocopter’s advanced main rotor and Fenestron™ tail rotor technology. The EC130 T2 brings a more powerful 950 shp class ARRIEL 2D engine that provides improved fuel efficiency and offers an engine data recorder and will offer a 6,000 hour mature TBO (Time Between Overhaul), which will help reduce operating and direct maintenance costs. ntsb reports NTSB Identification: *ANC12CA018* Date: January 21, 2012 Location: Beluga, AK Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter Co. R44 II Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot landed the helicopter at an off-airport site in windy conditions. While he was performing the engine cool-down portion of the checklist, a worker at the site picked up a storage container that was weighing down an empty cargo sack. When the weight was removed, the sack was picked up by the wind, and it contacted the helicopter’s main rotor system, resulting in substantial damage to the main rotor blades. NTSB Identification: *WPR12WA094* Date: February 04, 2012 Location: Nowra, Australia Aircraft: ROBINSON R44 Injuries: 2 Fatal. On February 4, 2012 a Robinson R44 II, collided with terrain near Nowra Aerodrome, NSW, Australia. The helicotper was destroyed in the collision sequence and the two occupants sustained fatal injuries. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA100* Date: February 11, 2012 Location: Las Vegas, NV Aircraft: SCHWEIZER 269C Injuries: 2 Minor. During an introductory training flight, the instructor attempted to demonstrate a hovering maneuver around a point on the ground. The wind at the time of the accident was estimated by the instructor to be 15 to 20 knots out of the south. During the maneuver when the helicopter was near downwind, the instructor lost control of the helicopter and it started to rotate in an uncontrollable right yaw. The instructor reported that the helicopter continued to spin until hitting the ground and rolling over approximately 300 feet from the initiation of the loss of control. The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the tailboom and main rotor drive system. The reported wind

14

at the time of departure was from 180 degrees at 18 knots, gusting to 25 knots. The instructor reported no mechanical malfunctions prior to the accident. NTSB Identification: *WPR12GA106* Date: February 15, 2012 Location: Moran Junction, WY Aircraft: BELL 407 Injuries: 1 Fatal,2 Serious. On February 15, 2012 a Bell Helicopter model 407 was substantially damaged when it impacted trees and terrain in the Bridger Teton National Forest near Moran Junction, Wyoming, during a search and rescue (SAR) mission. The commercial pilot and one SAR crewmember received serious injuries, and the other SAR crewmember was fatally injured. The mission was in response to a reported snowmobile injury accident, in order to transport medical personnel to that scene. Initial attempts to locate that victim, based on trail network and geographic coordinate information, were unsuccessful. The helicopter began a grid search, and the crew observed two snowmobilers signaling to them in a meadow. The helicopter landed in the meadow, and a SAR member exited and spoke with the snowmobilers. They were from the victim’s party, and they agreed to lead the helicopter on their snowmobiles to the accident site. The SAR member reboarded the helicopter, the helicopter lifted off to follow the snowmobilers, flying about 100 to 200 feet above the trees. Since the helicopter was faster than the snowmobiles, the pilot stopped two or three times in a hover to allow the snowmobiles to catch up. On either the second or third hover, the pilot experienced a slight left yaw, which he believed he corrected. The helicopter then started “spinning rapidly” and descended into the trees. Witness accounts of the spin direction have not yet been reconciled. The SAR member in the rear seat remained conscious throughout the

event, and extricated himself, despite an injured leg. He assisted the other SAR member and the pilot out of the helicopter after they became verbally responsive. The second SAR member subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The pilot carried a radio to the top of a nearby ridge and requested assistance. A ground team of TCSO and other personnel reached the helicopter about 75 minutes later. The accident site was heavily wooded, and the elevation was about 9,350 feet above mean sea level. NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA109A* Date: February 19, 2012 Location: Antioch, CA Aircraft: Robinson Helicopter R22 BETA Injuries: 1 Minor,2 Uninjured. On February 19, 2012 a Beech 35A33 airplane and a Robinson R22 Beta helicopter collided midair near Antioch, California. The pilot of the helicopter sustained minor injuries, and the pilot and passenger of the airplane were uninjured. The helicopter departed Hayward Executive Airport, Hayward, California with a planned destination of Sacramento, California. The airplane departed Byron Airport, Byron, California. Night visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and neither aircraft filed a flight plan. The airplane pilot departed Byron with the intention of performing three night landings, and 30 minutes of flight over Antioch and the Sacramento Delta area. They climbed to 2,500 feet mean sea level (msl), on a west heading, and were both looking ahead at airplane lights about 15-20 miles away. The pilot pointed out the local power station, and a few seconds later, they felt a collision. Neither occupants observed another aircraft prior to the collision, and the pilot was concerned that they may have struck a tower or bird. The airplane immediately began to shudder, and roll to the right. The pilot looked to the right wing and could see a hole, and a piece of tubing protruding from the leading edge. He established airplane control,

and began a 180-degree climbing left turn to 3,000 feet. He reported that his landing lights were on throughout the flight, and that although his transponder was switched on and set to 1200, he had not established radio contact with any air traffic control facility prior to the collision. The pilot elected to return to Byron Airport. He maintained straight and level flight by utilizing continuous left aileron and rudder control inputs. During the final approach segment, the propeller speed began to decrease and he was unable to maintain altitude. As the airplane began to slow down, it began to pitch to the right despite his left control inputs. The airplane subsequently landed hard in a field short of the runway. The helicopter pilot departed Hayward for the nonstop flight, with a route that was to follow highways to Concord and Antioch, and ultimately Sacramento. She contacted NORCAL approach for flight following once she had reached Dublin, and was issued a discreet transponder code. Once over Concord, the NORCAL Approach controller transferred her to Travis approach. She continued the flight, and a short time later received a traffic advisory from the Travis controller. She did not recall the specifics of the advisory, but remembers performing a scan to her 3 o’clock position. A short time later, she caught site of the silhouette of an airplane and a propeller at her 4 o’clock position. She performed an evasive maneuver to the left, and then felt the helicopter being struck. She did not know the extent of the damage, and as such, elected to immediately perform a precautionary landing. She choose a lit highway as a landing spot; however, as she approached, she observed multiple automobiles and diverted to a spot adjacent to the highway. Upon landing, the helicopter rolled onto its left side, sustaining substantial damage to the main cabin and the tail cone, which became separated midspan. Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that a forward portion

of helicopter skid tube had become imbedded about midspan in the leading edge of the right wing. Additionally, a 6-inch-long tip section had become separated from one of the airplane’s three propeller blades. NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA111* Date: February 20, 2012 Location: Kalispell, MT Aircraft: ENSTROM F28 Injuries: 2 Uninjured. On February 20, 2012 an Enstrom F-28C helicopter was substantially damaged following a loss of engine power and impact with terrain at the Kalispell City Airport (S27), Kalispell, Montana. The flight instructor and student pilot receiving instruction were not injured. The flight instructor reported that they were performing a fourth practice autorotation, which was to be a 180-degree simulated emergency maneuver flown by the student with the instructor following along on the controls. He said that midway through the maneuver the engine quit. The instructor stated that he immediately took control of the helicopter and performed an emergency landing, which the instructor characterized as firm. The instructor added that the helicopter sustained substantial damage as a result of the main rotor blades impacting the tail rotor blades. The helicopter was recovered to a secure storage facility for further examination.

helicopter was highly fragmented, with a debris field that measured a few hundred feet square.

NTSB Identification: *WPR12LA115* Date: February 22, 2012 Location: Farmington, CA Aircraft: TX Helicopter Corp OH-13E/M74 Injuries: 1 Serious. On February 22, 2012 a Texas Helicopter Corporation OH13E/ M47 was substantially damaged under unknown circumstances while conducting an aerial application run on an agricultural field in Farmington, California. The pilot received serious injuries. According to the pilot and the assistant who loaded the chemical payload, the helicopter had been working the local fields since about 0830 that morning, and had applied about 13 loads. The helicopter lifted off to begin another spray run after reloading by the assistant, who then turned his attention elsewhere. Shortly thereafter, he heard the sounds of the helicopter crashing, and turned to look, but he did not witness the accident. He ran to the accident site, assisted the pilot, and summoned for help. The

NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA118* Date: February 25, 2012 Location: Poway, CA Aircraft: EUROCOPTER AS 350 B3 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot stated that he was approaching a landing zone on a flat pinnacle with a tailwind. The helicopter was in a slow, stable, shallow approach when it encountered an updraft within 50 feet of the landing area. When the helicopter flew out of the updraft, it abruptly descended to the ground. The helicopter contacted the ground in a flat orientation, and the impact buckled the tail boom and sheared the left landing gear skid off. NTSB Identification: *WPR12TA120* Date: February 29, 2012 Location: Napa, CA Aircraft: EUROCOPTER AS 350 B3 Injuries: 2 Uninjured. On February 29, 2012 a Eurocopter AS 350 B3 made a hard landing at the Napa County Airport, Napa, California. The helicopter was substantially

damaged during touchdown when the tail boom skin was bent. The commercial pilot held a certified flight instructor (CFI) certificate, and he was providing instruction to the second pilot, who also held a commercial pilot certificate. Neither pilot was injured. The flight was performed under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. No flight plan was filed for the local area instructional flight that originated from Napa about 1600. Personnel reported that, at the time of the accident, the CFI was handling the flight controls. While hovering about 3 feet about ground level, the CFI performed an autorotation demonstration for the second pilot. Although the CFI raised the collective to arrest the descent prior to landing, the helicopter made a firm touchdown and the tail boom shook. During a subsequent examination of the tail boom, numerous dimples in the skin were noted near the area where the tail boom attaches to the fuselage. The tail boom is being removed from the helicopter and transported to Eurocopter’s Texas facility for repair.

Pima County Arizona sheriff’s department receives first AS350 B3e in U.S. law enforcement GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS – American Eurocopter announced that it has delivered an AS350® B3e to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD), which is based in Tucson, Arizona. The aircraft was delivered during a ceremony in American Eurocopter’s Grand Prairie Delivery Center. This marks the delivery of the first AS350 B3e to a law enforcement agency in the United States. “We are very pleased to be receiving this aircraft,” said Lt. Bob Kimmins, the Air Unit Commander for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. “Its capabilities match our diverse needs in terms of the missions we fly and the climate variations we experience.” The AS350 B3e, first introduced at Heli-Expo 2011, is the latest model in Eurocopter’s highly popular AStar® series. One of the most notable features

on the new model is the powerful Turbomeca Arriel 2D turboshaft engine with dual-channel digital FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control). The upgraded engine enhances the aircraft’s performance and system management and enables the AS350 B3e to operate at maximum takeoff engine power for up to thirty minutes. The power and performance advantages are significant for PCSD. Pima County covers over 9,000 square miles, and PCSD pilots may find themselves flying in desert temperatures of 112° one day and mountainous terrain with altitudes of up to 10,000 feet the next. “The benefits of the AS350 B3e will allow the PCSD to redefine and grow its mission scope,” says Ed Van Winkle, American Eurocopter’s Law Enforcement

Market Manager. The primary missions the Sheriff’s Department has flown in the past are border crime support and tactical insertion. It will continue with these missions and with the AS350 B3e the PCSD can expand its scope to include search and rescue. “The added power boost will make hoist missions much more feasible should this become an area of future need for the Department, and the proven reliability of the AStar will continue to meet their needs for many years to come,” adds Van Winkle. The search for a new helicopter came after a tragic accident in early 2011. Lt. Kimmins and Capt. Don Kester were tasked with redefining the Department’s helicopter mission and identifying the appropriate aircraft for that mission. “We flew with the Seminole County

Sheriff’s Department, the San Antonio Police Department, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” shared Kimmins. “All of these agencies were extremely supportive of our investigation and outspoken advocates of the AS350 series.” With the delivery today, Kimmins and Kester’s research and hard work has paid off. “While we can’t celebrate this delivery without a sadness for how we got here, we are extremely excited to have partnered with American Eurocopter to restart our helicopter program,” said Kimmins. “It is gratifying to know lives will be saved as we continue to look toward the future.”

Spreading The Wings of Insurance Protection to Helicopter Owners and Operators.

Having enough fuel to set the helicopter down with power in a suitable field mitigated the outcome of this fuel miscalculation. However, the lesson learned by the R44 pilot is still critical.. Customers were being loaded and unloaded without engine shutdown in order to save time and enable us to complete the tours within their time and budgetary constraints. Tours were also taking longer than anticipated…. As the last group was being loaded, I should have done a more complete assessment of fuel quantity and reserves and shut down to obtain more fuel…. The low fuel light illuminated approximately eight miles from the airport…. I found a flat place and set down to call for fuel. I overemphasized weight considerations, not filling the tanks completely before the tour group arrival in case the passengers turned out to be

heavy. Extensive experience in the R22, for which five gallons is an adequate fuel reserve, and less cross country/ long flight experience in the R44, for which that reserve is inadequate, made me tend toward an insufficient estimate of what I needed. The wish to keep the tours moving along and save my customers time and money made me rush both moving forward with the first tour (when I could have stopped to fill the tanks after realizing that we were not weight limited) and also made me reluctant to stop in the middle of the series of tours. Unexpected tasks in the office that morning…filled up much of the two hours of preparation time I had allotted myself to prepare for the flight. Rushing through the preflight phase made me more likely to miss the error I had made in the fuel calculation.
