Dick Cheney denies war criminal allegations at KPU event

By Simbi Ntahobari Eagle Staff Writer

Former Vice President Dick Cheney refuted accusations that he is a war criminal during his speech to students and members of the AU community in Bender Arena on March 28. The Kennedy Political Union hosted Cheney as part of a stream of speakers coming to campus. “The accusations are not true,” Cheney said. During his vice presidency, three people were waterboarded, Cheney said. Waterboarding refers to either pumping a stomach with

water or inducing choking by filling a throat with a stream of water, according to a report by NPR. “Some people called it torture. It wasn’t torture,” Cheney said in an interview with ATV. Students protested the event due to the accusations of war criminality against Cheney, The Eagle previously reported.

The spring Student Government elections will determine next year’s president, vice president, comptroller and secretary, as well as the presidents and boards for class and school councils. As an organization, SG is the main advocate for undergraduate students to AU administrators, and also works to bring programming and events to students, according to its website. Voting for the elections will be on April 1 and 2, and the results will be announced the night of April 2. All undergraduate students who are enrolled full time are eligible to vote. Here is the full list of candidates currently on the ballot for the upcoming election. School of Public Affairs Professor Howard McCurdy has always been a bit of a science geek. “When I was a kid, I built rockets in my basement, I read science fiction,” he said. “I corresponded with the family of a cousin of mine about space exploration, about extraterrestrial life.” Decades later, he’s built a reputation as an expert in space policy.

He’s published seven books and countless journal publications discussing everything from robots on Mars to organizational change in NASA. He’s a regular on NPR and cable news. Despite all of this experience, he was still surprised when he received word last month that he had been given the John F. Kennedy Astro-

nautics Award from the American Astronautical Society. “I just got the notification and that was it,” he said with a laugh. “I wasn’t expecting it at all.”

Staff Editorial: The Eagle’s SG endorsements for 2014-2015 school year AU greek life: Who is your risk management protecting?

By Shelby Ostergaard

Fraternities have existed almost as long as the residential college experience has. In 1825, a group of young men decided the best way to rebel against their administration was through the formation of a secret club—the Kappa Alpha Society. College life used to be quite different from what we experience now. As Caitlin Flanagan explains in an article from The Atlantic, the

The coming year will be a busy one form. These are our endorsements: for Student Government. The Student Activity fee may be raised and Comptroller – Abby Dunn redistributed. The Board of Trustees may vote to divest from fossil fuel Secretary – Sarah Preston equities. Reported cases of on-campus sexual assault are rising and that needs to be addressed in some form. Vice President – Molly Kepner Now more than ever, the student body needs to participate in the election process and properly inform themselves along the way. The Eagle’s editorial board had the privilege to meet with each candidate running for an SG Executive Board position and openly question his or her plat-

idea that “pursuing a bachelor’s degree might be something other than a deeply ascetic and generally miserable experience was once preposterous.” Enter fraternities. The college clubs exploded across the country, complete with youthful rebellion and Romantic style chants and oaths. Women’s lacrosse launches past George Mason By Shannon Scovel

Eagle Contributing Writer

The AU women’s lacrosse team stormed past George Mason University 15-3 to rack up its second consecutive win thanks to strong passing, persistence and performances from the offense on March 26, at Jacobs Field. “[Passing] is something that we have been working on all season, just being consistent, and today we

clicked.,” head coach Emma Wallace said. “We were more composed and we held on to the ball. We clicked on offense and on the defensive end with our clearing game.” Senior attacker Alex Lugovina set a fast pace early on, earning the first score of the game with a wraparound goal from behind the net within the first three minutes of play.

Senior guard Alexis Dobbs led her team in points throughout the regular season, often scoring in tense moments and giving her team the boost it needed to win games. Dobbs tried to do the same during when the AU women’s basketball team played against Seton Hall University in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) in South Orange, N.J. on March 20, but Dobbs’ 24 points fell short of carrying the Eagles past the Pirates. “It was a good way to end our season as far as effort is concerned,” head coach Megan Gebbia told AUEagles.com. “Playing against a Big East team on their home floor is never an easy feat, and we were right there with them, so I think that speaks volumes of our team in general.”
