The deaths in their home of a Billingshurst couple are now being treated as a murder-suicide enquiry by police. The mother of the young wife who died has paid tribute to her as police continue to investigate the tragedy. Jan and Julia Tshabalala were found on Christmas Day 2014 and detectives have had to wait while complex tests were carried out to decide their next move in the investigation. Speaking on behalf of her family Mrs Susan Trim said of her daughter: "We are all absolutely devastated by Julia's death. The pain and the heartache we feel at losing such a beautiful daughter, sister and mother is indescribable. "Julia was a loving, happy, kind and caring daughter and a fantastic mother to her two young children. "Julia was taken from us much too

soon. She lived for her children and would have done anything for them. “My daughter and I were very close and I miss her more than words can say. I will always love her dearly and her beautiful memory lives on in her children." An inquest into the deaths of Mrs Tshabalala and her husband, 33, has yet to take place. It has been confirmed that a neck injury from pressure applied led to Mrs Tshabalala’s death, and that her husband died from hanging. Further inquiries are now being carried out into the exact circumstances. Police say extensive forensic and toxicological tests have just been completed and they show the suggested causes to be the most likely outcome. Their bodies were found at their home in Groomsland Drive, Billingshurst, on the morning of December 25 last year. Evidence will now be presented to the coroner for West Sussex, Penelope Schofield, for an inquest date to

be fixed. The senior investigating officer in the case is Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, of the Sussex and Surrey major crime team. DCI Rymarz said: "People may be wondering why it has taken so long to determine the causes of the couple's deaths. "But this has not been a straightforward case and consideration has had to be given to a number of forensic factors. We have had to await the outcome of tests that have taken time to complete. "Members of the Tshabalalas' family are fully aware of this and understand the reasons." He added: "I have been grateful to them for their dignity and patience while this investigation has proceeded." The police said in a statement that a Home Office pathologist has given the cause of death in Mrs Tshabalala's case as being consistent with pressure on the neck. Her husband was found to have subsequently died from hanging.

A triple alliance of councillors from West Sussex and two neighbours is fighting for greater powers. They want to be able to spend more of locally-raised taxes on services and have more ability to help businesses. West Sussex County Council is backed by East Sussex and Surrey to lead the call for greater powers and freedoms to be devolved to the South East. Leaders of all three have signed a letter that has been sent this week to Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, in which they call for a meeting to discuss how to progress plans. In their letter, the leaders describe their determination to deliver better services for local residents, communities and businesses being at the heart of their proposals. The three authorities have identified a list of ‘devolution offers’ to manage the impact of economic growth like pressures on school places, road and rail infrastructure, housing and social care. To tackle those things the councils say they seek access to more of the taxes that are raised locally, and the ability to influence road and rail infrastructure decisions. Additional powers are also sought over apprenticeships and skills to promote employment and support small businesses, as well as new ways of supporting services that provide care to the elderly and vulnerable. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “Our region plays a critical role in the UK’s economy and we must nurture that. “I’m excited to be taking forward our proposals with my colleagues from East Sussex and Surrey County

Councils and I know we will all be working closely with our respective district and borough councils who will be key to making this a success. “I do think devolution is the future for local government. It is as exciting as it is challenging. But it will allow us

to deal with those difficult issues so much better if we have greater powers and freedoms. Such opportunities do not happen often in local government but if and when they do we should embrace them for the benefit of those we serve.”

Pupils came face to face with a Roman soldier at their school. Farlington’s Prep 4 girls were said to be excited and a little nervous about their Roman workshop as they came face-to-face with a real Roman soldier. He was wearing full armour and had many weapons with him. As a marker for discipline the visitor threatened to punish the girls if they did not listen and learn. Fortunately, says the school, the girls were on their best behaviour and obeyed his every command. In his opinion they had the qualities needed to join the army; they were fit, strong, loud and fierce. The youngsters were given their own shields and swords and taught how to make different formations in battle. The Testudo formation proved to be one of their favourites, but did not prove to be that successful when they came under fire from the enemy who were armed with fortunately nothing more lethal than bean bags. The school said the workshop gave the students an excellent insight into life in the Roman Army. They learned about the different types of protective armour, the variety of weapons and how to use them. They also learned some Latin. The girls are reported to really enjoyed the experience but it seems quite a few of them were pleased that they were girls, and would not have been able to join the real Roman Army.

foolish builders, the sermon on the mount , the last supper, and the feeding of the 5,000. Sponsors were as diverse as the Rotary Club and Horsham Football Club as everyone threw themselves into the spirit of the occasion. People attending the Civic Service on Sunday were able to enjoy the displays, which were open from Thursday to Sunday of last week. The Post features here a snapshot of the festival. Alice in Wonderland theme for Sparks in the Park festival Crowds at next month’s Sparks in the Park festival in Horsham are being invited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. Organiser Horsham District Council hopes many people will bring to life with fancy dress the colourful characters in the book, such as Alice and the Mad Hatter for the festival in Horsham Park on July 12 from noon. The town’s Museum, run by the council, will also be holding an exhibition throughout July and August exploring local links with the real life Alice. Sparks in the Park will include a range of themed activities including tea parties, entertainers and f a n c y d r e s s competitions. Another feature of note for the upcoming event is the appeara n c e of the

first ever SprungDigi digital arts festival, which Horsham is hosting. This is free and will feature the work of local people with learning disabilities alongside digital artists. The digi festival is supported by the district council and Art Council England and runs from 10 to 12 July so will spend its third day at the Sparks in the Park event. Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am delighted the council continues to organise and host this fantastic event for the community of Horsham. The council has a great track record in creating some of the most fun, accessible and

inclusive events which appeal to the whole family. “I would encourage you all to come along and enjoy this year’s special Alice in Wonderland theme.” Based on feedback from last year, a second additional food and drink zone will be positioned by the Community Safety Display area. The programme also includes the return of regular favourites such as Skate Jam, the Community Stage with local performers, a community safety display, the Have a Go Sports Zone, Benson’s Funfair, a Stay Safe Young Driving Experience, KAPOW alternative wrestling, a food court and Horsham Rotary Club’s Charity Zone. Sparks in the P a r k w i l l also feature a prev i e w of this summer’s Elephantastic Elephant trails organised by Horsham Rotary Club and the Born Free Foundation.

Armed Services Day marked in town centre

Shoppers saw Armed Services Day marked in Horsham town centre. The day is actually held officially on Saturday, but Horsham District Council marked the occasion with a flag raising ceremony at the War Memorial in the Carfax on Monday morning. In attendance were the council's chairman Tricia Youtan, vice chair-

man Christian Mitchell, chairman's cadet Andrew Stuckey, vice chairman of the Horsham branch of the Royal British Legion Nigel Caplin, standard bearer Tony Woolgar, of 1318 Royal Hussars from 1979-86, and Bugler Clive Longhurst, bandmaster of the Royal British Legion and Branch Treasurer, who is a former member of the Parachute Regiment.

Drunk man drives the UNICEF backs baby feeding and health wrong way down A24 visiting services across West Sussex A 78-year-old man was so drunk he did not notice he was driving the wrong way along the A24. Godfrey Maclauchlan was seen by members of the public driving his blue Ford Mondeo north on the southbound side of the road at Cowfold at about 6am on 2 June. He then turned east on to the A272 and officers saw him driving with his window down despite the fact it was raining heavily. Police said Maclauchlan did not seem to see the blue flashing lights and sirens behind him for several miles and was weaving in and out of the gutter, travelling at 30mph in a 50mph area. He eventually stopped after the patrol car pulled alongside the Mondeo and an officer shouted at him to stop. To watch footage of the pursuit and Maclauchlan speaking to the officers visit https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=g_mPI6wzo8E&feature=youtu. be. Maclauchlan, of Crown Road, Billericay, Essex, pleaded guilty to drinkdriving when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on June 16. He was banned from driving for 12 months, fined £250 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £25 victim surcharge. Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, of

Sussex and Surrey roads policing unit, said: "The case of Maclauchlan shows yet again that it isn't only the young or middle aged that decide to drink-drive. "Getting behind the wheel after you have had a drink puts not just yourself in danger but everyone else on the roads that you might meet. "We are determined to catch those whose selfish behaviour endangers others and I would urge anyone who suspects someone is drink-driving to contact us immediately." In another case, Bela Orosz first tried to drive his Volkswagen Golf the wrong way onto the slip road off the A23 at Hickstead. He then realised his mistake and pulled over at about 10am on Tuesday 2 June. Instead he approached a nearby police patrol car and asked how to get to Horsham. The 62-year-old was slurring his words and did not seem to be able to understand the basic directions so he was breathalysed and found to be over the limit. Orosz, of Capel Road, Rusper, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 16 June. He was banned from driving for 15 months, fined £150 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Baby feeding and health visiting services have won recognition by childrens’ champion UNICEF. The Sussex Community NHS Trust has been awarded Stage 1 Baby Friendly accreditation. To achieve this its services, including infant feeding and health visiting,

have undergone rigorous assessment over the last two years to provide assurance that they deliver the very highest standards of care. UNICEF said: “Sussex Community NHS Trust is highly commended for the quality of the documents submit-

ted and the thorough way in which the necessary processes to implement the Baby Friendly standards have been planned.” Kate Pilcher, the trusts’s Head of Children’s Services, said: “This is really good news for the trust, and even better news for mothers and babies in West Sussex. The trust health visiting services are already committed to giving children the best possible start in life; achieving our stage one accreditation will help us ensure that all mothers and babies receive the very highest standards of care, not only by providing expert advice, but also by supporting all parents to build strong relationships with their babies. “All our health visitors in West Sussex now attend a training programme which has been approved by UNICEF. This should enable all mothers and fathers to receive the very best information on which to make decisions about how to feed and care for their baby, and also ensure that they receive the support that they need to do this.” The Trust provides breastfeeding drop-ins every week across West Sussex. The drop-ins offer both professional advice from our infant feeding advisors and support and information from our trained breastfeeding peer supporters. Slinfold man’s talents celebrated Diabetes in Sussex still as Fabergé story comes to screens on increase, say figures A film about the famous Fabergé egg family, for whom a Slinfold resident once worked, will be shown on Monday at the Capitol Theatre in Horsham. At the same time as the world’s most luxurious Easter eggs were being created in Tsarist Russia by Fabergé, Alfred Lyndhurst Pocock was carving a name for himself working for their London branch. Carl Fabergé created a brand synonymous with extravagance, luxury and quality as the film Faberge: A Life of its Own, being shown at 7.45 pm on June 29, reveals in full high definition detail. In London, Alfred Pocock, a young man recently out of Royal academy school was revealing his rare talent as a stone carver. Pocock, who came to Slinfold by 1930, was noted as the only person in Britain who could tackle carving large semi-precious stones and had gained recognition in 1905 for carving wax models for Queen Alexandra. These were then sent by Fabergé to

their Russian workshops for carving. Later he would undertake the carving, having learnt the art from text books. One of his carvings of a dog is in the Royal Collections. According to Bainbridge, the manager of Fabergé’s London branch “in 1905 or 1906 Queen Alexandra had asked to see models for two animals and that it had been necessary for Fabergé to find a modeller in London at short notice. Pocock, a scholarship pupil at the Royal Academy Schools, was selected and apparently produced the models to the Queen’s satisfaction. However Bainbridge records that it was modelled at Sandringham and cut in St Petersburg. Later Pocock would gain a reputation as an art teacher. So perhaps out of fellow recognition with Mr Shrewsbury, the talented art master at Collyer’s school, he agreed to carve a likeness of him as a retirement plaque in 1949 that would recognize his contribution to the museum as its Honorary Curator. This is on permanent display at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. The museum says the film is a rare opportunity to discover the genius of the family behind the finest objects ever created. The number of people living with diabetes is growing in Sussex despite widespread publicity about the condition. Latest figures show in East and West Sussex there were 79, 288 adults registered in 2013-14, an increase of more than 3,600 on the previous year. The figures are extracted from official National Health Service data. In the Horsham and Mid Sussex area the numbers went up from 8971 to 9307.

Experts say the figures mean the sharp rise in diabetes cases in recent years is continuing Experts say the figures mean that the sharp rise in diabetes cases in recent years is continuing. While many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented. there is no way of preventing Type 1. Diabetes UK is calling on the NHS to ensure people living with diabetes are provided with education and support to manage their condition on a day to day basis effectively. Jill Steaton, Diabetes UK South East regional manager, said: “Over the last decade we have seen the number of people with diabetes rising at an

alarming rate and these latest figures are a stark call to action. We must act now or face the very real danger of diabetes devastating the lives of even more people, and threatening to wreck the already over-burdened NHS. “There is a gaping hole when it comes to diabetes education because we know that most people newly diagnosed with diabetes are not offered a group education course. This is despite strong evidence that giving people the knowledge and skills to manage their diabetes effectively can reduce their long-term risk of complications. “We must get better at offering education to people who are living with diabetes and help them to manage this serious, complex and often overwhelming condition. It is crucial that education is made available both at the point of diagnosis and beyond as the education needs of people already living with the condition can change over time. "Along with providing better and more flexible education options, local health systems need to focus on increasing the proportion of people getting the 15 healthcare essentials that everyone with diabetes should be receiving. Until we achieve these steps, we will continue to deny people living with diabetes of the best possible chance of living long and healthy lives."

Pupils learn Home Guard Authors inspire pupils at Steyning drill at WW2 session Grammar to try something new

Pupils enjoyed a touch of Dad’s Army during a session on World War Two. They were shown how to drill like the Home Guard, made famous on television by pompous Captain Manwaring and his company. The pupils from Prep 6 group of Farlington School, Horsham, also became evacuees for the morning as they enjoyed a World War II workshop with the “History Man.” Carrying suitcases and with teddies under their arm, they wore their labels with pride for the experience.

A bed sheet in the design of a map of Europe helped the girls to understand the serious business of how the German army got around the Maginot Line and pushed the French and English troops into the port of Dunkirk and down onto the beaches. The girls tried on different uniforms and worked a baby gas mask. They also wound up the air raid siren, put out the fire using an original stirrup pump and did other activities that brought their school curriculum to life before a visit to code centre Bletchley Park last Thursday.

Youngsters have been challenged to try books they would not usually read, inspired by visiting authors. Several writers have swapped ideas with pupils at Steyning Grammar school in the run-up to this week’s “Brilliant Book Awards “ceremony. One of them was Alan Gibbons, who talked to Year 9 and 10 students about his nominated book ‘Hate’. Mr Gibbons said it was written after he heard of a true story in which a woman was killed for what she chose to wear. He told students he was aware of domestic abuse near his childhood home, which was one reason why he wrote another book, The Edge. The aim of the Brilliant Book Awards is to encourage as many students, staff and members of the community to read books they would not normally read and to celebrate the value of reading for pleasure. The event is being run in association with Steyning Book Shop, the school Learning Resource Centre staff and students who have nominated book short lists for Year 6 students of Steyning Primary School, Year 7-8 students, Year 9-11 students. There is also short list for Sixth Form student, staff and the local community to read. Literacy leader Cheryse Rahaman said: “We have been very lucky to host so many author events during this term. The talks have been inspiring, entertaining and thought provoking.”

The most haunted places in Sussex

Neil arnold Sussex Folklore

I’m often asked when I write articles such as this, what I think are the most haunted places in Sussex. Of course, numerous places are known for their ghostly reputations and yet spooky encounters connected to such locations seem scant. However, I have often been fond of stories attached to the coast-line of Sussex and would like to share a few of these tales with you. Haunted boats, phantom fisherman and the likes are very much the order of the day here; for instance there is an incredibly weird little tale of a spectral fisherman from East Sussex.

At some point in the 1800s it was said that a fisherman resided in Hastings but he was not your average man. It is claimed that he sold his soul to Satan in order to gain supernatural powers. These powers would enable him to turn into wisps of smoke in order to enter a room via the keyhole! According to some the fisherman had disappeared from the area but was apparently found dead; washed ashore and yet for years afterwards locals claimed that after his deal with the Devil his tormented soul could be observed around the coast of Hastings; pleading with some to aid him in his quest for freedom. From the 1930s until the 1970s a barge named Hygea (built in 1917) was moored at Gravesend in Kent. The name of the boat was rather apt – Hygea in Greek and Roman mythology being the name of the daughter

of the god of medicine – because the boat acted as headquarters for a medical officer, treating sick and injured sailors arriving at London. When the boat was eventually retired she eventually moved on to Littlehampton, a seaside resort in West Sussex and was renamed Seahorse by the man who purchased her, a Mr Alan Becker. In 1984 the boat served as a pub – and like a majority of pubs, it had a ghost. One humid night a watchman employed to keep vigil over the barge was settling into his quarters when he was chilled by a sudden draught. He thought that an upstairs window must have been left ajar and so he ascended the steps only to find all the windows shut. He returned to his room, which was now quite cold, despite the muggy weather, and so he put a big coat on but then suddenly felt an overwhelming feeling of horror engulf him. With

that, the night-watchman, who’d been used to spending many a night alone in dark places, felt the need to barricade the door from inside until over an hour or so later the feeling subsided and the chill seemed to fade. This wasn’t to be his only encounter however, because one night he saw hanging pot plants swing violently of their own accord despite the fact the barge was still. Then came his third and most terrifying experience, which again took place at night. Whilst sitting comfortably in front of the pub fire he was startled to see shadowy figures playing out on the wall before him, and this eerie play went on for some time until the watchman left the area. Of course, some would argue that if such experiences only concerned the security guard then maybe he was prone to hallucination, but someone in that type of job wouldn’t normally be of unsound mind, but thankfully for him, a Mandy Milson, a waitress on the Seahorse also reported a supernatural experience when one night she was sitting in the bar area with some friends when a door at the top of the stairs began to open and close of its own accord. An investigation ensued but there was no-one else to be found. I’m also fond of strange stories concerning phantom sounds and buildings. Around the British coast there has long been legends of churches being swallowed by the sea; or buildings crumbling into the waves and yet years later witnesses describing seeing such sunken forms jutting out of the foaming water. At Bulverhythe – a suburb of Hastings - in East Sussex there is legend of church bells being heard beneath the waves which is also echoed at Bosham, in the west of the county. The noise could well be explained by the raking noise the sea makes as it combs the beach, but it has certainly spawned a degree of lore for it is said that when the bells are heard then bad weather is imminent. Of course, the rugged Sussex coastlines have a long history of smuggling and so folklore is rife. At Seaford in East Sussex, legend claims that local people – once known as ‘cormorants’ or ‘shags’ – would lure ships onto the rocks by placing false lights on the cliffs and so such vessels would run aground, and smugglers would not only loot them but murder those who hadn’t already succumbed to drowning. Another legend states that if one was a witch and wanted to wreck a ship then all they had to do was stand on their head and chant, “Sweery, sweery, linkum-loo! Do to them as I now do…” Certainly far easier, some would say, than waiting for an age for a ship to be lured by a false light.

Stylish offices in convenient setting Sussex brewer launches ‘PintForAPint’ campaign

The two units have primarily open plan arrangements with a good standard of finish having been built …. years ago. Aircon, double glazing, perimeter wiring and onsite parking could create a comfortable, affordable option for a local, growing business looking for good communications in a great setting.” The larger premises, Unit 17 is available under a simple tenancy agreement at a rent of £8,750 + VAT per annum while Unit 18 can be rented for £5,500 + VAT pa. Work begins for new large fashion store in Swan Walk shopping centre It has just been announced that works, to create a new large fashion store, have started at Swan Walk Shopping Centre in Horsham. This year, the centre celebrates its 40th year and what better birthday present could it have wished for? “We are incredibly excited for our existing tenants and all of our customers;” said Gill Buchanan, Centre Manager. “We know that our customers want to see more fashion brands in Horsham and anticipate that this new store will open in 2016.“ Hoardings will be in place during all the works and will be dressed with centre information and updates as the project progresses.

To coincide with the NHS Blood Donation Week ‘Help us to fill the gaps’ campaign, launched to help encourage people to give blood, Sussex based, Dark Star Brewing Co, has launched a campaign to reward donors…with beer. The campaign will reward donors with a free pint of beer from its brewery shop, in Partridge Green, and goes under the name ‘PintForAPint’. James Cuthbertson, director at the brewery, said: “Several of our

team are regular blood donors, so we thought we’d mark NHS Blood Donation Week, with an event to raise awareness for what is, of course, a very serious campaign. With stocks of blood low, you never know when you might need some to save your life, so we’re urging people to give blood and are very happy to reward their efforts with a pint – after they’ve had their cup of tea and biscuit of course”. For information on where to donate, visit: www.blood.co.uk

Spanish students learn the language of food Students of Spanish ate their words when they were given a cooking lesson in Horsham. The Advanced level class from the adult education at Collyer’s College swapped their books and pens for a frying pan and potato peeler to prepare traditional fare. Spanish teacher Milagros Herguedas explained: “Learning Spanish or any foreign language is not only about the language, but also learning about the culture and traditions. There really is nothing more traditional than a potato omelette or tortilla, so we decided it would be a good idea to get cooking! In Spain you will find them as tapas or as filling in a baguette and it is essential in a picnic as you can eat it warm or cold.” The students got hands on experience with Milagros in the kitchen: peeling and chopping potatoes and onions, egg beating and at the most crucial moment…the “turning” of the tortilla!

Captain Tortue celebrates 10th anniversary The UK arm of French fashion and lifestyle brand, Captain Tortue, celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. Based in Horsham, the UK & Ireland Division is run from The Mill House, Mill Bay Lane - a charming setting, just a stone's throw from the centre of town. It's in such a tucked away location, you'd be forgiven for not knowing it existed! The company sells women's and children's clothing, exclusively through its independent consultants, who sell directly to customers at home or via informal events. Founded in 1993 by Lilian and Philppe Jacquelinet, Captain Tortue is still a family business today. Little Captain, for children (Capt'n Tortue) is the heritage brand and was the only collection for the first 10 years. Exclusive designs, luxury fabrics and a creative way of selling, makes Captain Tortue unique. With its French headquarters in Aix en Provence, this inspiring brand epitomises the ethos of French chic. Managing Director, Mimi Bogelund, has seen a phenomenal growth in the business, since she launched the UK Division in 2005, from her home in Storrington. A few years later, Ireland was added

to the mix. 10 years on and the UK & Ireland Division employs 7 staff, retains 350 consultants and has a turnover approaching £4m. Sales are up 40% on last year and the future is certainly looking rosy.

Horsham is a buzzing, vibrant environment; a great place to work, for entertaining visitors and inspiring creativity Mimi explains, "Captain Tortue offers a unique way for women to do something they love doing, while being flexible enough to fit in with their daily lives and commitments. Our consultants are really passionate about the brand and customers love the easy, friendly, sociable way of shopping. It works equally well in an urban or rural environment - that's because the clothes are unique, affordable and

An exhibition will be held throughout the Summer, at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, showcasing works (inspired by the Sussex countryside) of local artist, Claire Harrison, whose studio is located just south of Horsham. The majority of the art is based upon flowers, and insects, from her garden and the local landscape. Work, consisting of large, brightly coloured oils, highlight the miniscule on a large scale. The vividly adorned canvases appear to glow, thanks to Claire's passion for colour. She explained that she wants to 'show that the tiny wildflower or bright beetle in a grass verge is like a jewel amongst the undergrowth' and that her work explores the miniature, miniscule and microscopic, of both the floral and insect world, and she will often attempt to crawl under the smallest wildflower and photograph from below, as if she were an insect looking up. A fascination with camouflage leads Claire to often hide insects within her work, by cleverly using tone to conceal these little creatures. Just as you need to search to find mini beasts in a field, the audience will need to pause to find all the hidden dimensions in her work. Her fascination with patterns will be shown in the incredibly intricate pen and ink drawings, where she often depicts the many spirals found within the centre of

daisy-like flowers. Having studied plants under a microscope for many years, Claire shows us they are not all that we perceive, but draws the intricate detail from both the microscope and the naked eye. This exhibition shows one woman’s passion for the natural world around her, which she immerses herself within, showing us that creatures however small are magnificent. Claire has exhibited successfully across the UK in both solo and selected group shows and is featured in both public and private collections; selling to collectors in several countries including the UK and Canada. She regularly exhibits with The Shoreham Art Gallery and recently in Dorking and Haywards Heath. Claire enjoys working in her local community and sharing her passion for the arts, and has worked with many schools, colleges and arts organisations. She currently teaches at Evolution Arts, Brighton and Guildford Institute, Guildford. She also teaches private students and mentors fellow artists. Band gives charity a welcome boost Charity workers struck a right note in helping to organise a band concert. As a result of their efforts Slinfold Concert Band has given a cheque for £500 to Age UK Horsham District. The Horsham branch of the charity worked with The League of Friends of Horsham Hospital to help make the ‘Listen to the Band’ concert at the Capitol in Horsham a success. The band, under the baton of musical director Christopher Newport, entertained the audience with a selection of items from across the musical spectrum. They were joined in the second half by members of the choir of St. Mary’s Church, Horsham, who performed the Military Wives’ Prayer ‘Wherever you Are’ by Paul Mealor and joined in with the grand finale, ‘Moment for Morricone’ by Ennio Morricone.

Time to shine in SprungDigi Festival People with learning disabilities will take centre stage at their own digital arts festival next month. SprungDigi Festival is the first of its kind and will feature 10 digital interactive artworks using music, film, mapping, gaming and performance dotted around the town centre, all created by learning disabled groups from the area. It will be staged from July 10-12 in Horsham town centre. Supported by Horsham District Council and Arts Council England, Sprungdigi is the brainchild of disability culture specialist Sarah Pickthall and her company Cusp Inc who launched Sprungdigi to encourage learning disabled people to get creative and connect with the world through digital technology. Sarah said: “Digital technology can offer learning disabled people huge creative potential and the work on offer during the festival proves that. We hope the whole community will come out, show their support and. most of all, have fun together.’ The festival is the culmination of months of creative workshops involving local groups of learning disabled people from a variety of settings, including Queen Elizabeth II School and Horsham Day Services. It includes filmed living portraits of local learning disabled people projected onto buildings in the centre of the town and digital street theatre featuring young learning disabled performers in the streets and parks, all of which will be free. SprungDigi is looking for volunteers to train for the festival. To find out more and/or apply email: sprungdigital@gmail.com. To see the full festival programme, please visit: www.sprungdigi.com.

CORNER

Friday 26 June 2015

New Nursery Manager Tom joins the Team Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery is delighted to announce that Tom Halliburton has joined the team as Manager. Jack said “Tom’s arrival has been a bit of a baptism of fire! We are well into spring and the fine weather has resulted in the nursery being very busy.”

Cream Tea A fresh fruit scone served with clotted cream and strawberry jam together with a refreshing pot of tea! £3.45

Open daily at Birchfield Nursery – 10.00am - 4.00pm

Tom has a good pedigree in horticulture. He started his career working as a Landscape Gardener for a period of 6 years. With this experience under his belt he then decided to study Garden Design and Horticulture formally. After finishing college he started his own business specialising in topiary and slowly built up garden design work. An offer then came up to work for Architectural Plants for 8 years as assistant Nursery Manager and Topiary/clipping Manager. It was during his time at AP he got the opportunity to work on Marylyn Abbott’s Topiarists garden at the 2014 Chelsea Flower Show. The garden was awarded a Silver Gilt medal. What drew you into Topiary? “When I was young I cut the grass at home and I would get creative by drawing circles and shapes with the Flymo without anyone knowing. I think it was a sign. When I was growing up, I spent many weekends at Wakehurst Place and Nymans garden. These gardens definitely informed my approach to plants, gardening and topiary. For me,

inspiration for topiary comes in many forms, from reading magazines to walking on the beach. But I drive over the South Downs most days and seeing those rolling hills, blobby bushes and wind swept trees doesn’t get much more inspirational than that. Then there’s always the internet, where I can gaze at images of the gardens at Marqueyssac in France. When the job of Nursery manager came up at Jack Dunckley’s Birchfield Nursery, I jumped at the chance to work here. With Jack’s fantastic reputation as a medal winning designer and my knowledge of plants and maintenance, hopefully we can grow what’s already a good nursery into one of the most talked about and specialist plant nursery’s in the south east.” With approximately 3,500 different species of plants and shrubs on display at the nursery, it is recommended that you pay a visit to Tom and the team, to walk around and see all the wonderful plants, and get some friendly advice if needed. Whilst at the nursery, why not have a leisurely coffee or partake of the delicious snacks both savoury and sweet in the Cloudtree Coffee Shop which is open everyday (10am till 4pm) during the summer months. A pathway to success in your garden by Jack Dunckley Paths and patios can transform a garden as well as fulfilling the obvious functional role. The choice of surface and materials is key to gaining the desired effect. Be warned, preparing the ground properly to lay any paving for a patio or a path requires a good deal of experience if it’s to survive the punishment of weather and walking on and maintain it’s look. There are two types of surface that I use frequently to create stunning paths. One is a resin bound gravel the other is a Breeden aggregate. Recently my landscaping team laid a resin bound path in a garden in Hurstpierpoint. I recommended the lighter coloured gravel to contrast nicely with the Pepperino Basalt tiles that edge the path. Both materials work very well with the lush green grass. The client wanted a light coloured wooden Pergola with a square seating area in the far corner of the garden and we laid a perfectly smooth 3 metre square area in a matching resin bound finish. This had borders surrounding it with a topping of bark chippings. When laying resin bound paths, you can opt for a porous or semi porous surface, which is seamless and flexible and resistant to cracking. It also has the advantage of being able to apply it to concrete, asphalt or other suitable substrates. Being semi porous helps with cleaning and maintaining a nice looking surface.

The other useful aspect of this resin bound material is the ability to create decorative patterns or shapes like a Company logo for instance. The large floor area in the Pavilion that I had at Hampton Court last year, I was able to have principal sponsor Just Retirement’s company logo made in the same resin finish and in their corporate colours. It was extremely effective. As a demonstration of how durable the path and pavilion floor area was, in just seven days, approximately 30,000 people walked on it! A testament to how it really can stand the rigours no matter the conditions.

Plant of the Month

Jack pictured at Hampton Court 2014 with TV presenter John Inverdale and designer Linda Barker The resins come in different colours and shades and my landscaping team are officially certified and qualified to lay this surface. It is SUDS compliant (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems), easy to clean with a jet wash, variations of edging, either tiles or a steel edging strip.

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus var. repens creeping blue blossom

The Breedon Aggregate Surface Breedon Golden Amber gravel provides a non-slip, nontrip surface which knits together to form a solid bonded, durable base and a surface which scarifies with use for a beautiful, natural soft appearance and is more aesthetically pleasing than concrete or asphalt. Breedon Golden Amber self binding gravel is quite often seen in public places and is a popular choice for hospitals and sensory gardens. Breedon is very common on Golf Course paths, it’s a 100% environmentally friendly material and is suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames and mobility scooters. My landscaping team used Breedon to great effect in this terraced garden in Horsham. Because of it’s sand like natural appearance, it worked extremely well with the paving slabs on the patio and the thick wood edging.

Countryside offers stamp duty paid at the lanes

At The Lanes at Wickhurst Green in Broadbridge Heath, Sussex, Countryside is offering stamp duty savings to provide purchasers with an opportunity to save thousands, when purchasing selected homes at this attractive development. Avoiding the hefty stamp duty fee will make moving into a new home a really attractive prospect, providing homebuyers

with an opportunity to spend money on furnishing their home with a budget they wouldn’t have previously had. In addition, flooring is included throughout each of these properties. Currently available on all four and five bedroom homes at The Lanes, with a stamp duty saving from £11,750 for the amazing value 4 bedroom Wakeford house

design, up to £20,500 for the exemplary 5 bedroom Wells house design, this special offer is available for a limited period this summer. Andrew Loveday, Sales Director for Countryside comments: “We are delighted that we are able to help homebuyers take that step closer to their dream home with our stamp duty paid and flooring fit-

ted through-out offer on our 4 and 5 bedroom homes. The Lanes really is a little piece of tranquility, offering traditionally designed homes in a desirable village location, ideal for families wanting countryside living, yet still have easy access to the capital and surrounding towns.” Available through the Help to Buy scheme, The Wakeford is a stylish fourbedroom, three-storey family home offering over 1,500 sq.ft of luxury, spacious living in a picturesque village style development. At just £435,000 it offers great value for money and is ideal for families looking to live in this exciting new community. Featuring a grand entrance leading to an open plan living and dining room, complete with a light and airy garden room with French doors leading out onto a beautiful garden, this property is perfect for entertaining this summer. The sleek kitchen design includes white stone worktops, double oven and a four-ring ceramic hob. It also homes ‘A’ rated kitchen appliances; integrated full height fridge & freezer and integrated dishwasher and washing machine. An impressive staircase leads to the first floor, where the master bedroom boasts a private balcony with separate dressing room and en-suite bath and shower room. A further double and a single bedroom along with a family bathroom completes the first floor. A guest suite encompasses the entire second floor with en-suite and dual aspect sash windows, perfect for visiting friends or family.

Landlords must comply with new safety regulations Landlords will soon have to deal with the threat posed to their tenants by carbon monoxide poisoning or face a financial penalty. Measures announced by the Government in March are expected to come into effect later this year and will require rented homes to be fitted with at least one carbon monoxide alarm. Landlords who fail to comply will be liable to a civil penalty of up to £5,000.

Statistics show approximately 40 deaths and 670 serious injuries are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning each year Leaders’ technical and compliance director Carole Charge explained that landlords will need to install a carbon monoxide alarm in any part of a property that is deemed to carry a high risk - such as rooms in which a gas or solid fuel appliance is present. Landlords will also be required to install smoke alarms on every floor of a tenanted property. “With an increasing number of tenants in rented accommodation across the UK, it is inevitable the spotlight will focus more and more on safety - and this is something Leaders welcomes,” Mrs Charge stated. “The overriding responsibility of a landlord has always been to provide a safe environment for their tenant, and the new measures will help to ensure

this remains the case. I would advise all landlords to have carbon monoxide and smoke alarms fitted in advance of the new legislation coming into effect, which is likely to be in October.” Statistics show approximately 40 deaths and 670 serious injuries are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning each year. Mrs Charge said: “Carbon monoxide has no taste, smell or colour, so it is easy to understand how so many people are unaware of its presence. Cases of poisoning can be down to poor installation, a lack of maintenance or damage to a gas appliance within a property. “The good news is that deaths and injuries caused by carbon monoxide can be easily avoided through the use of a functioning detector. The equipment will alert a homeowner as soon as carbon monoxide levels rise above the norm, giving them and their landlord time to act.” Leaders has stringent measures in place to ensure its landlords’ properties have regular gas safety inspections carried out by an engineer who is registered with Gas Safe Register. “We will be just as rigorous when it comes to ensuring our landlords comply with the new carbon monoxide and smoke alarms regulations once they come into force later this year,” Mrs Charge said. Leaders is recommending its landlords have the alarms installed at the same time as a gas safety check, providing one is due before October, and can arrange for this to be done on request. For advice you can trust on all aspects of letting, renting, buying or selling please contact your local Leaders branch www.leaders.co.uk

IN House is a professional operator that has secured us good tenants in very short times and has always been there on any issue.

Horsham Rugby Club moves up a gear Horsham

Parkrun continues to grow

Rugby Martin Read – Sports Reporter Richard Ordidge, Commercial Manager at Horsham Rugby Club tells the District Post: “We’ve got a major improvement scheme in the pipeline – the building of new changing rooms. Planning permission has been obtained and fund raising is in full swing.” Son Johnny plays for Horsham, following in his father’s footsteps, and Vice President Richard, formerly a coach and treasurer at the club joined 60 sponsored cyclists last Sunday to boost finances for the project, saying: “The existing facilities are over 40 years old and not now fit for purpose. We’re aiming to create a legacy for future generations.” 52 year old Richard, not a regular cyclist, prepared for the ride with serious gym sessions and some road work. He chose the longer of the two routes - the fifty mile option, setting off from Horsham Rugby Club at 9.30am. Ride organiser and starter Tony Smith said: “As soon as they were on the road I drove the van over to Ashurst Village Hall to prepare for the lunch stop.” On the ride Richard was accompanied by his wife, Fiona being one of a group of Horsham

Athletics Philip Liberman – Horsham Joggers

The cycling event raised around 5k for Horsham Rugby Club Cycling Club members taking part. Richard saying: “We weren’t trying to break any records but Fiona was pleased to be the first lady to finish back at the rugby club. I’ve never previously ridden more than 30 miles in a day and found the hills challenging so I’m very pleased to have completed the course.” Would he do it again? “A bit too early to say – I’m sure I’ll be as stiff as a board tomorrow! But there was a great atmosphere on the ride with several

families participating. It was really well stewarded by the club and we raised about £5,000.” Decking has been installed at Horsham RFC and last year a new kitchen was built, but the changing room project is even more ambitious with an estimated £350,000 cost. The club, planning to raise a minimum of £100, 000 themselves, are about half way to that target and hope that the remainder will come from grants and loans, Richard say-

ing: “We should commence building next April and have the changing rooms ready for use by the start of the 2016-17 season. The facility will be available to the whole of the sporting community in Horsham and surrounds - not just for rugby but for other sports, too - encouraging and supporting female participation.” To donate to the project please visit - www.justgiving.com/Richard-Ordidge

Josh and Josh win Captain’s Day at Cottesmore Golf Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Josh Dance and Josh Greig won the tournament

Two young golfers from Horsham excelled themselves, winning the Captain’s Day tournament against a field of 25 pairs, predominantly adults, at Cottesmore Golf Club. Josh Dance aged 12 and Josh Greig (11) partnering each other romped home in the 36 hole handicap competition, scoring 42 points in both the four ball better ball in the morning, followed by the greensomes (each pair teeing off and then picking the best drive) in the afternoon. Proud father Darren Dance told

the District Post: “They both played really well as a partnership and my lad’s next assignment is playing for Sussex U14s again – this time at Chartham Park, East Grinstead.” While Josh Greig said: “It was a great weekend for me – on Saturday I had my best ever score in a junior event!” dad Alan adding: “The boys practise and play a lot together. Josh has won quite a few other events. I’d given up playing golf and now he’s encouraged me to take it up again – but he still beats me!” Both boys also play cricket, but without doubt golf is their abiding passion and further tournament wins will surely follow.

Horsham Joggers turned out in force for the latest West Sussex Fun Run League fixture and produced some good solid performances that maintained their top half standing. Individual results were: Paul Adams 18.42 Raff Vitale 19.11 Stephen Wilson 21.29 Alan Pettitt 22.25 Dave Dawson 25.18 Cliff Marlow 26.11 Rod Thomson 27.15 Melanie Marlow 27.23 Richard Barron 28.06 24 Caroline Bransden 28.24 Diane Berry 29.31 Stephanie Charman 29.38 Paul Chandler 31.19 Claire Burrows 32.43 Verity Dods 34.49 Jenny Boyd 37.55 Victoria Saunders 38.51. Last weekend was down to business with the Sussex Grand Prix Heathfield 10k, a scenic and rather hilly run around the best of the Sussex countryside; Joggers produced some great results with 212 finishers Mal Thornton was lead man in 18th 40:16, Matt Payne 47:23, Paul Yokom 47:31, Janine Littler 48:15, Alan Pettitt 49:24, David Dawson 58:44, Paul Chandler 1:14:18 and Claire Burrows 1:15:41. Also last weekend Dean Heneghan stormed round Horsham Parkrun to finish first in a personal best by 40 seconds of 16.25. The Parkrun also had its third highest attendance ever of 285 following the 299 runners the week previous as it continues to grow in popularity. Finally, some hardy souls took on the challenge of running from Slindon to Queen Elizabeth Country Park along the South Downs way in a relay. The wonderfully named teams finished in this order: ‘Horsham Belles’ were 80th team home in 4:22:21, ‘Kaisa's Chiefs’ were 81st in 4:23:34 and ‘In It for the Bling’ were 89th in 4:35:46.

Busy Triathlon weekend across Horsham Park Triathlon Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Last weekend saw packed two days of multi-sport events in Horsham Park with the second of Horsham Tri Club’s GoTri series held on Saturday, followed by the ever popular Horsham Youth Tri on Sunday. The GoTri event which consists of a swim and then a run, as the name suggests, was created to make it as accessible & convenient as possible to participate in as the only equipment you need is a swimming costume, t-shirt and some trainers. Although not intended as a competitive event, participants do return to try to beat their previous times and numerous personal bests were had on the day. With

only 58 seconds separating 1st and 5th place on the longer distance event, it is proof of the effort and enthusiasm the multi-sport format fuels, even for those who were participating for the first time. A special mention goes to Pete Cutler who, on the way to a PB, broke the 20 minute barrier for the shortcourse event. The next GoTri is on July 18 with ages of entrants ranging from 14 to 63, as well as a few newcomers to multi-sport events already signed up. This is followed by The Billingshurst Youth Tri on Sunday 19 at the leisure centre. If you would like more information or to enter the GoTri events, please visit www.horshamtriclub. co.uk. Jolyon Palmer earns praise in Austria motor sport Dave Smith - Sports Editor

Another impressive free practice performance in Austria from Jolyon Palmer saw the Lotus F1 Team third and reserve driver finish the 90-minute session in 14th position.

After posting an early lap time of 1m17.160s, he quickly improved on consecutive drives to lap the circuit in 1m12.687s Jolyon completed 27 laps and worked through a large amount of development and set-up work for the Enstone based outfit. After posting an early lap time of 1m17.160s, he quickly improved on consecutive drives to lap the circuit in 1m12.687s, which put him eighth overall and within onetenth of team mate Maldonado. Jolyon pitted with one hour left in

the session, lying just 1.847s off fastest man Nico Rosberg. Returning to the track on soft tyres Jolyon improved his earlier times, with a 1m12.050s moving him into eighth position. A third and final run by Jolyon saw him come into the pits shortly after starting, without improving his time, to end the session in 14th position. In a remarkably tight 90 minutes, just 1.5s covered the entire top 15 with Jolyon just over a tenth of a second off breaking into the top 10. The session was led by the two dominant Mercedes cars of Nico Rosberg and championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Former World Champion Kimi Raikkonen was third in his Ferrari with Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Nasr rounding out the top 5. Jolyon Palmer commented; "It was a good session. There were no real dramas but I had to stop slightly early as I had a flat spot on the front tyres, which was a shame. Overall I am happy with free practice one and now I will let Romain take over for the rest of the weekend." Lotus F1 Team Trackside Operations Director Alan Permane said: "As we've come to expect, Jolyon did a great job in today's session. The Austrian circuit looks deceptively simple, but it is actually quite a technical track to master so it was great to see Jolyon straight up to speed here."

Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC The week started for Pulborough Bowls Club on Friday, with a home match in the West Sussex Bowls League against Maltravers from Littlehampton. 3 rinks and a triple played for both sides and by half way there was just a 4 point difference between the teams. Skip Len Adsett, with lead, Melvin Green, number 2, Shaun Jupp and number 3 Mick Ayling had a fantastic game, getting top rink with 28/14

scoring a 5 on end 18. The final result didn't reflect the closeness of the match with Maltravers achieving 96 to Pulborough's 64, but Pulborough did steal 2 vital league points. An away game the following day at Stedham, heralded a change of fortunes for Pulborough. 3 triples played 18 ends and skip John Brown looked to have everything under control at halfway, with a 2 point lead, but Stedham fought back to pin the Pulborough team on 7 for the next 4 ends whilst they stretched out a 2 shot lead to cruelly finish 14/16 ahead. Saturday June 20 - Sussex Premier League Roffey 189 All Out (51.1 overs) Horsham 190-5 (48.5 0vers) Horsham won by 5 wickets

John Burroughs hit a superb 100 for Horsham

The form book forecast a different outcome but, deservedly, Horsham beat Roffey – notching up their third consecutive league win against their near neighbours. In overcast conditions and with a greenish tinge to the wicket Horsham - with captain Sam Attfield and allrounder Ben Shoare returning but nursing injuries - invited Roffey to bat and the visitors were soon one down. However, a cultured 42, including 8 fours, from Mike Norris and 28 from Rohit Jagota took the score to a promising 105-3. But,

despite 42 from Ben Manenti, four wickets then fell for one run – either side of a rain delay, 158-5 crashing to 159-9. George Fleming and Alex Collins put on 30 for the last wicket but new signing, Barbadian Kevin Stoute, playing virtually straight off the plane, with 4-59 and the abiding scourge of Roffey, Michael Munday, with 3-37 ensured that Horsham had a manageable target. Horsham responded brightly, the 44 run opening stand being the team’s second highest of the season. With John Burroughs batting dependably and the score on 128-2 with overs aplenty in hand a cluster of wickets was Roffey’s only hope of salvation. They did take two more but 4 fours from James Johnson in a 14 ball cameo was the perfect accompaniment to John Burroughs exceptional century and by his departure - on exactly 100 - Horsham’s well-paced victory was long since assured. John told the District Post: “It was seaming around so we needed

to be patient. We had ample time to get the runs and our plan was to keep on rotating the strike to put them under pressure. We always had wickets in hand and it was great for us to get a much needed win. Of course I enjoyed getting a hundred but to be honest I’ve been batting better – but, frustratingly, I’ve kept finding a variety of ways to get out!” Roffey skipper Josh Fleming said: “It was a good toss for Horsham to win and they bowled well, especially their new overseas – he looks like a good acquisition. But, we batted poorly really, if we’d made 225 we would have been more in the game. JB played the innings that both teams needed, he did exactly the right job for Horsham.” Roffey remain second but now trail leaders Preston Nomads by 27 points. Tomorrow (Saturday June 27) Horsham travel to Cuckfield while Roffey entertain Billingshurst. Scorecard link - http://sussexcl. play-cricket.com/website/results/2356417

Sunday June 21 - Sussex Premier League Horsham 319-6 declared (55 overs) Sussex Cricket Board – Development XI 78 All Out (31.5 overs) Horsham won by 241 runs Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter What a difference a weekend makes! After the previous round of games Horsham were in the relegation zone with just 87 points from six matches but have now zoomed up to fourth on 146 after two big wins last weekend. Against the Sussex Academy Horsham batted first, putting on a much longed for display. On his seasonal debut Tom Haines posted a busy 79 with 10 fours and 3 sixes, then James Johnson continued his rich vein of form with a run a ball 80 before Craig Gallagher added a quick-fire 62 ena-

bling Horsham to pass 300 and declare with three extra overs to bowl out the students, whose bowling figures do not bear close scrutiny. In reply the dizzy heights of 33-2 were reached before matters rapidly deteriorated, ending in tears with a dismal total of 78, including 13 extras. Five bowlers shared the wickets, Nathan Roberts taking 2-33 and Kevin Stoute 2-13, but it was a frugal spell of 4-4 from eight miserly Michael Munday overs that ripped the heart out of the Academy batting with three of his victims departing without scoring from 26 balls. Horsham all rounder Ben Shoare told the District Post: “We almost doubled our points this weekend. This was the first time this season that we’ve won the toss and batted with conviction, closing them out of the game. Then Kevin bowled especially well with the new ball before Michael finished them off with a clinical spell.”

Preston Nomads cemented their position at the top of the table, beating Billingshurst with 23 overs in hand. But, although Billingshurst again failed to post a challenging enough total, Nomads also found batting troublesome, suggesting that a target of 175 might have produced the opposite result. Billingshurst soon found themselves in trouble, but with opener Stuart Barber secure at one end – his eventual 66 containing 9 fours – 51-2 promised better things. Yet, 29 from Andy Barr was the only other meaningful contribution, just three further batsmen reaching double figures, 105-4 descending to 124-8 before the innings closed on an inadequate 136, Carl Simon, Kashif Ibrahim and Stephen Rigg taking three wickets each. Nomads’ jittery response saw them stumble to 10-3, Andy Barr (2-21) dismissing both openers cheaply. Recovery to 88-3 predicted a more straightforward win until Dhanushka Mitipoaarchchi took three quick wickets, finishing with 3-36, reducing the visitors to 129-6, but with so few additional runs required Nomads inevitable victory, largely due to Rob Wakeford’s 71, was achieved without further alarms. Tomorrow (June 27) in need of a win, Billingshurst visit Roffey.
