Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers

Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

This week the Chief Medical Officer for England announced three further patients who were ‘close contacts of a known case’, had tested positive for COVID-19. These relate to a man who tested positive in Surrey on Friday 28 February so brings the total number of confirmed cases in Surrey to two. We can also confirm the other two cases in this family cluster have been confirmed in West Sussex. All cases are adults and are not health workers. Ruth Hutchinson, Interim Director of Public Health for Surrey County Council, and Anna Raleigh, Director of Public Health for West Sussex County Council, have issued a joint statement following the Chief Medical Officer’s update. Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success

Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of

recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

• The tracing and managing of contacts who have had significant exposure to confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus is being co-ordinated by Public Health England. • The process starts with a predetermined list of information being collected on each patient. This includes details of any places visited following the onset of symptoms or, in the case of travellers, since they arrived in the UK. •This is either done by the clinician caring for the patient or in conjunction with them. Translation services will used if needed to ensure the information is as accurate as possible. • Information is also collected about significant contacts – those people in close contact with the case while symptomatic, such household members, fellow travellers etc. •Using the available information, all close contacts of the case will be assessed and either categorised into high or low risk. All con-

tacts will be provided with health advice about symptoms and given emergency contact details to use if they develop symptoms in the 14 days after the exposure occurred. • Those considered to be at higher risk will have a verbal assessment of their health and their health will be monitored on a daily basis and they will asked to self-isolate. Should any of the group report symptoms they will be assessed and offered testing in line with current guidance. PHE recently used contact tracing successfully in Brighton to track all know cases and prevent any further cases. If I live in Surrey or West Sussex am I at extra risk because of the recent cases? •We ensure that someone with coronavirus doesn’t put others at risk by treating them in isolation and carefully investigating who they had close contact with through contact tracing. • Contact tracing is a fundamental

part of outbreak control that’s used by public health professionals around the world. • If a person tests positive for coronavirus, we speak to the patient to identify anyone who has had close contact with them during the time they are considered to be infectious and go all out to find these people as soon as possible. • Once we have contacted them we can then give them the advice they need. If they are in groups considered to be a higher risk, we make sure that we follow up with them daily to see how they are. If they become unwell we are then able to assess them quickly and take appropriate action. What does self-isolation mean for people who don’t have symptoms? • Just like when you have the flu, individuals should remain at home and should not go to work, school or public areas. Where possible, individuals should avoid having visitors to their home

Individuals should not use public transport or taxis until 14 days after their return from Wuhan. • Individuals should monitor their symptoms and call NHS 111 (or your national alternative) if they develop any of the following symptoms – fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. Kinder Living and the power of the positive This weekend (7 & 8 March) sees Horsham’s fifth Kinder Living Home Show, with more inspiration and advice for living a more sustainable life than ever before. The show is run by a small and dedicated team of volunteers, on a ‘not-for-profit’ basis. Why do they do it? Show founder Jeanette Mercer explains: “There are so many frightening messages and images about the environment - fires, floods, deforestation, melting ice, declining wildlife. It’s necessary, but it can become very depressing. It’s almost easier to ignore it and hope someone else will deal with it. But our individual actions really do matter, and feeling that you’re doing something - however little that is at first - is actually quite up-lifting. For most people, sustainable living is a journey of many small steps and it starts with taking a sensible look at how you live now. That’s what the Kinder Living Home Show is all about - helping people to figure out where they are now, and what

they can do next.” This year’s show will have a special display of electric vehicles by the Sussex EV car owner’s club, so people can talk to car owners about the reality of driving electric. There’s a focus on energy in the home - both saving it and generating it, plus avoiding food waste and plastic in the kitchen and personal products. Transition Horsham are bringing their seed swap, and lots of advice on sustainable gardening, and Horsham Repair Cafe will be popping up for the weekend offering repairs (see website to book). It’s a family friendly environment and rumour has it that (to mark show’s 5th birthday) there will be the launch of an exciting competition for local young people! ‘Strictly Vintage’ dancers to support older people in Horsham District

The team at local, independent charity Age UK Horsham District are delighted to announce that their successful 1940’s/50’s style Tea Dance ‘Strictly Vintage’ will be returning to The Drill Hall in Horsham on the afternoon of Saturday 21 March 2020.

Over the last six years the event, which attracts guests of all ages and dancing abilities, has continued to grow and become a firm fixture on the dancing calendar. As in previous years, the very popular Royal British Legion ‘Legionnaires’ Dance Band will be providing live 1940’s

and 1950’s music and a delicious afternoon tea will be served on vintage china. There will also be a raffle and prizes for the ‘Best Dressed’ attendees. Simon Dowe, Interim CEO for Age UK Horsham District, said: “The guests love the vintage feel of the event and many even come dressed in traditional 40’s and 50’s style. These fabulous events raise around £2,000 to help support our work with older people across the Horsham District and we are really hoping that this year we can raise even more!” The event is being organised by Age UK Horsham District’s team of staff and volunteers, and this year has a new sponsor, Freeman Brothers Funeral Directors. Horsham businessman supports Children’s Charity after son dies A FATHER has thanked staff at Chailey Heritage Foundation for transforming the life of his late son by running a half marathon in his memory. Richard Crunden, 36, of High Hurst Close, Newick, defied strong winds and rain to complete the Brighton race with sister Debby Scull, 38, from Horsham. He has so far raised £680 for Chailey Heritage Foundation, based in Haywards Heath Road, North Chailey, where son Theo spent three years as a pupil from 2014 to 2017. Theo sadly died aged just five in 2017, but Richard says his family hold so many positive memories

of their son’s short life. Richard said: “Chailey Heritage has a special place in the heart of our family. My son, Theo, benefited so much from being there and it was a place where he had some of his happiest times, with a team of exceptional people who knew him and truly brought out the best in him. “I can’t speak highly enough of the staff at Chailey Heritage who supported Theo while he was there. We often look back at pictures and videos of his time at Chailey Heritage and if we can help in any small way to make sure other kids have just as much fun and develop as much as Theo did, then this will go some way towards leaving a lasting legacy for Theo.” Theo received catastrophic brain damage at birth after a complicated caesarean section. He was starved of oxygen for a long period and resuscitated twice. He then had pneumonia but survived.

Sadly, he died unexpectedly in October 2017. Mum Lucy, 35, said: “He really was the bravest soul I have ever met. He had quadriplegic cerebral palsy, was registered severely visually impaired and could not eat orally; his swallow was too unsafe. “He suffered daily. Even with more than ten medications, his seizures, spasms and dystonia plagued his every move yet he still smiled. He tried so hard to lift his arm or extend a finger, but this always resulted in an incredibly painful spasm and seizure. “When he cried out in pain, I was taken back to his birth and the horror we went through. This happened to Theo hundreds of times a day, yet still he smiled.” The family, who run a cooling systems company in Horsham, have been fundraising for charities which support disabled young people. Richard explained: “It is great to help other children in Theo’s memory. He really did have a great time at Chailey Heritage. “The Brighton Half Marathon gave me a lot of time to think about him and we have some lovely memories of him in Brighton too. “His communication skills really came on when he was at Chailey Heritage. There were some terrific staff who were able to give him some superb one to one support, and there’s no doubt that it helped him massively. “I would describe it as full rounded support for Theo provided by Chailey Heritage Foundation. “We had no expectation he would die when he did, and it was such a shock. “Now I am determined to help other families in similar positions.” The couple have two other children, Mabel, aged five, and Flora, two. Every penny raised will support the children and young people at Chailey Heritage Foundation to fulfil their potential. Winner of West Sussex Children’s Picture Book Award 2019/20 announced To celebrate World Book Day, the West Sussex Schools Library Service has announced the winner of their West Sussex Children’s Picture Book Award 2019/20. “I am a Tiger”, the hilarious picture book by Karl Newsom and Ross Collins, has been overwhelmingly voted the winner of this year’s award by children from 26 primary schools across West Sussex. The winning book tells the ‘tail’ of a bold little mouse who successfully persuades his animal friends that he is a tiger. Karl Newson, author of ‘I am a Tiger’, said: “I’m absolutely

Independent Ladies boutique turns three Angie Maskell - Owner

For busy shoppers in Horsham it is easy to focus on Swan Walk, the Carfax and West Street but you will be handsomely rewarded if you go further a field. The newly opened Piries place development with its plethora of restaurants is great for lunch or a leisurely coffee; if you head further a field, there are a cluster of independent shops well worth a visit. Nestling among these, between a lovely old fashioned teashop and the ubiquitous barber’s shop, albeit one that has been trading for over 20 years, sits DejaStyle - a small ladies fashion boutique which, like its owner Angie Maskell, has a big personality. “I cannot believe that I am celebrating the 3rd anniversary of Deja, the time has flown by but I am loving every minute of looking after my wonderful customers,” says Angie, but she goes on to admit that it has not been plain sailing: “I think I chose the worst possible time to open a retail business”, she laughs, and with the general decline of the high street and the move to shop online she has a point. Ironically, the development of Piries provided Angie with another big headache: “they literally demolished a car park and rebuilt it right in front of my shop so, yes, it had a big impact on sales; foot fall was reduced and customers thought I had closed down”. But that’s all behind Angie now and she is looking forward to the future doing what she does best sourcing clothes to make her customers look and feel beautiful, “Fashion is a big passion of mine” she says and it is definitely not just for catwalk models but for all women regardless of size and shape. This is definitely one of Angie’s great strengths - helping women feel good about themselves again. One of Angie’s heroes is Gok Wan and the absolute highlight of her career so far was taking part in his “One Size Fits All Fashion Show” in Brighton last September: “Meeting Gok was a dream come true; he represents everything that’s good about the fashion industry.” His outrageous humour combined with intuitive empathy is a winning combination and it is these qualities that Angie brings to

Deja. She has not been christened Gok Ange for nothing! Retail therapy is a great mood booster and for this reason Angie runs personal styling sessions where a customer can book an appointment in advance and where they can try on a selection of different colours and styles: “Experimenting with clothes can be a lot of fun, especially when we are introducing a new seasonal collection. “We are really excited about this season. We have stunning new dresses in bold prints and colours such as red, yellow and green. A welcome splash of colour after the doom and the gloom of the past few months. We also have some ditsy dresses coming in, more muted in tone, but which look specular with chunky knits and hiking boots. And lots more. “It’s not all about individual items of clothing. Tricks of the trade include clever accessorising and layering which can transform individual pieces into stunning outfits that complement and flatter the figure. A daytime outfit can be transformed into stunning evening wear with the addition of a statement necklace or a silk scarf.” For this reason, Angie stocks a wide variety of accessories which also make perfect presents. Whilst happy to make suggestions, Angie prides herself on offering impartial advice with absolutely no pressure to buy: “I want customers to feel 100 percent happy with their choices - and customers appreciate an honest opinion; this business is not just about making sales in the short term, but making life long customers who appreciate and value your service.” Angie has an ideal background for fashion retail. She has a degree in Fashion & Costume Design from The Wimbledon School of Art so can see immediately what works and what doesn’t - essential for a sole trader who is a buyer and a seller, plus everything else rolled into one: “Cut is everything. No piece of clothing can work if it’s badly cut - it has to drape and flow well on the figure. There is so much cheap rubbish out there and the old adage you get what you pay for applies 100 percent to fashion”. Having also worked in theatre

backstage in costume design, Angie became a dab hand with a needle and thread - essential for quick change arounds and alterations. She is able to bring these skills to Deja where she provides a free alteration service much appreciated by customers. Angie also manufactures her own label trousers in a variety of colours. These are made to measure so customers can chose the length and width to suit. They are made from bengaline, a natural fabric with stretch, making them comfortable to wear as well as looking good. They can be full length, ankle grazer, capri or crop depending on customer choice and the season: “Bengaline is a great fabric, as it is breathable which helps keep you warm in winter and cool in the summer.” Natural fabrics are also a must as far as Angie is concerned and most of the clothes she sells are made of cotton, silk and linen. Again, it is all about quality. As a small independent boutique, Deja cannot compete head on with big high street chains and internet sites, as it lacks the ability to buy in bulk which is vital for keeping costs down. Instead, it focuses on its strengths: “Our philosophy is to source individual unique statement pieces great for special occasions. Added to that, I stock the timeless capsule items that form the bedrock of a woman’s wardrobe. “I cannot offer the low prices of a high street chain, but I can (and do) offer excellent value for money, providing designer pieces and a great customer service.” So what not pay Angie a visit? new facility, Horsham Football Club had been homeless for many years and, without its own ground, the future of the club was at risk. The new ground to the south of Horsham town provides the club with its own facility with two 3G pitches and a club house. As well as the Horsham Football Club there are numerous other clubs who use the facility including eight First Teams managed by the club with a range between Under 23s and Under 11s. Outside of the Stadium the Club are also linking up with Horsham District Council’s Ready and Able Club for people with disabilities, where once a month they run a football session for them. The planning permission for the football facility was not without its challenges and represents a good example of how to bring forward community and sports facilities for the wider benefit of the town. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for such a prestigious national award which attracts hundreds of competitive entries. I wish to thank our planners for all their hard work and

Brightening up St Mary’s School Last week, members from across Saxon Weald spent the day lending a hand at St Mary’s CE Primary School. The eager group of volunteers were able to apply some tender loving care to the school grounds. Together, the group tackled a range of tasks, including painting classrooms, cleaning the outside fence, repairing a shed roof and helping the school’s caretaker put together a climbing frame for the playground. Alex Bird, headteacher at St Mary’s School, thanked the team for their hard work: “We are so, so grateful for all of the work the team carried out.

Saxon Weald has been such a blessing to us. The volunteers were so positive and achieved so much in the time available. County Council joins forces with award-winning provider to fill community transport gaps A new initiative to develop local transport solutions is being funded by West Sussex County Council, in partnership with Community Transport Sussex (CTS). Newly-appointed staff at CTS will support and develop the existing community transport network over the next two years, while working with local communities and parish councils to explore innovative ways to ‘fill the gaps’ in areas currently lacking conventional public transport

services. This will also include working closely with the county council’s Transport Provision team to share vehicles and drivers, making better use of existing resources. The county council has agreed to contribute £50,000 towards the new initiative over the next two years. Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “We know how much our communities value transport links across the county so we are

delighted to be partnering with Community Transport Sussex to help develop travel solutions for anyone who isn’t able to access, or has difficulty accessing, conventional public transport.” Matt Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of CTS, said: “The ability to get out and about is key to maintaining independence and staying connected to your community. “We hope that this new partnership between CTS and the county council will enable us to reach out to more communities

But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share

of the property is placed into the trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. Mass attendance at Horsham Apprenticeship Fair 2020 More than 500 people visited Horsham’s Apprenticeship Fair this year, which took place at the Drill Hall, Horsham on Saturday 29 February. Some 30 exhibitors, including apprentice employers, training providers, colleges, and universities, provided information and advice on the day with over 250 different job and training opportunities on offer. There were some major employers in attend-

Let’s hear it for local High Street!

Our high street would be a boring place indeed without local independent businesses. Don’t get me wrong I love national brands too but local independents rock for many reasons. And it’s incumbent on each one of us to use them if we want our high street to be more than just the same old brands we see in every town. But should sentimentality be the prime driver of our motivation? I don’t think so. I can say almost without exception that the service I’ve received from local independents has been amazing. By contrast the service provided by businesses on the internet is often (IMHO) conspicuous by its absence; none more so than when things go wrong and we’re at the end of a convoluted process designed to thwart our attempts for redress and send us dotty. I want to illustrate this point with an example from a family owned, independent business that’s been in Horsham for donkey’s years – Collingwood Batchellor. As many of you know, they sell lovely furniture and home accessories– all at pretty keen

prices. We’ve been a customer for 20 odd years. My mum recently visited from Leeds and was so taken with a suite at CB that she bought it, assured that the national courier service they use would deliver it to her door and set it up inside her lounge. When the appointed day arrived I received a frantic phone call from Mum. The guys delivering could not get the arm chair through the door. I spoke to them and they were adamant. The suite had to go back down the M1. They were unwilling to remove the feet. My Mum was pretty traumatised. I popped in to CB within the hour (that’s another great thing about buying local – you can walk through the door and discuss any problems face to face) and was given a sympathetic response plus the phone number of the customer service manager, James Denston who is based at their Horley store. What happened thereafter was truly astonishing and the best example of customer service I have ever received. James immediately reassured me that the suite would be redelivered with instructions to the delivery team on how to remove the feet. He said CB would pay for this delivery. He also stated unequivocally that Mum would get a full refund if indeed her front door was too narrow –

no questions asked. He made it clear that a happy customer was all that mattered to him. There followed some to’ing and fro’ing with the courier company but all the time James looked after us, even contacting me at the weekend and on his day off to ensure they had made contact and we were happy. The CB Horsham team took photographs of the feet of the suite, with clear instructions to the courier company on how to remove them. The whole team was involved. I never had to chase James. He kept us updated throughout. When Mum’s suite was redelivered it went through the door, feet off! I popped into CB Horsham to say thank you and they were genuinely pleased Mum was happy; problem solved. How many businesses would

have washed their hands when the chair did not go through the door citing it the responsibility of the customer to get their measurements right? How many would have redelivered it but charged the customer especially when the delivery depot was in London and Mum in Leeds? This was never on the agenda for CB. It was unspoken but obvi-

Here are fifteen things that I believe are essential if you’re going to see your company flourish into a high growth mid-market company 1. Don’t be alone The experienced, objective and dispassionate adviser/chairman/ non-executive director (mentor) can make for a powerful

combination with the passionate yet inexperienced entrepreneur who is not always as objective as required. It’s someone to talk to and vent your frustrations at – safely. 2. High calibre senior leadership team You need one of these if you are serious about growth. Too many founders think they can do it virtually by themselves or employ junior managers and expect director level results. Recruit for greatness. 3. Challenge It’s no longer all down to you

and if your leadership team is motivated by long term growth in the value of the company then it’s likely they now own part of it too. You have to respect their views and listen to their advice. Expect to be challenged. If you aren’t, something is wrong – you have a weak team or you are overbearing. Both are equally dangerous. 4. Learn to lead not manage This means you have to build a great leadership team and then let them get on with it. Your role as CEO & Founder is to provide the direction and uphold the vi-

sion and focus – through the ups and downs. Pick the right people and they’ll build a great company for you. Too often, a promising young business is stifled because the founder cannot make the leap from being the nexus of all decisions to leading a team. Pay attention to the small stuff By this I mean remuneration policies, organisation structure, proper performance reviews and all manner of leading your people the way you would want to be led. Taking Your Business Forward. Collyer’s Employability students have been put through their paces during a mock interview session run by top experts from Assurity Consulting. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability Co-ordinator at the Ofsted Outstanding Sixth Form College, explained: “Assurity’s Ian Robinson has been running some brilliant workshops with our students over the last few months to prepare them for the big day. Working from real job descriptions, the group have followed the process of researching the company and job role, completing an application and submitting a CV and covering letter. “After all the preparation and research, they were then finally put through the rigours of a mock interview by an interview team from Assurity.” Prizes were awarded for Best Interview, Best CV and Covering Letter, Best Question and Best Dressed. The team from Assurity kindly spent time with each student to talk through the concept of a job interview, and after the mocks, they spoke to the students individually, to provide feedback on their performance and advise on areas they may wish to work on before seeking employment. The feedback from the candidates was very positive. During the day, the students also gained an insight into an

interviewer’s perspective, as Ian Robinson and the team gave top-tips about what they look for in candidates, how to stand out from the crowd, methods to build rapport and practical advice on building CV’s. Employability Co-ordinator Lucy Hargreaves said: “Today was about making the best of the talent our young people have got and helping them develop it. All of the students interviewed demonstrated huge potential.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, who teaches the Employability course, added: “The students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and through a practical exercise picked up a tremendous amount about the world of work. “Assurity Consulting have been massively supportive of our Employability programme and Ian Robinson’s workshops have been inspirational. Beer festival expands with more cider, wine and gin The CAMRA North Sussex Equinox Beer & Cider Festival returns to the Drill Hall in Horsham on the first weekend of March, with over 50 ales and 20 Sussex ciders, along with local wine and gin from Bolney Vineyard. Organisers have announced several changes this year: “Firstly, the team from Bolney Vineyard will have a stall at the event, selling their range of still and sparkling wines and gin. The second big change is that

there will be a bigger selection of cider this year, as we will be judging the CAMRA Sussex Cider of the Year during the event. We also have a couple of special beers brewed for the event, brewed by the CAMRA organising team with lots of help from local brewers Chapeau and Kissingate. Finally, we will be offering a £1.50 refund this year if you return your festival glass when you leave, as requested by a number of our festival regulars.

Times are the same as last year, with a Friday evening session from 6-10pm, followed by two sessions on Saturday, from 11.30 through to 4.30, and then from 6.30-10pm. We have ordered enough beer to ensure that there should be a decent range all the way through to 10pm on the Saturday. There are some tickets left for the Friday evening and Saturday evening sessions, which will be available on the door, from the Anchor Tap and Malt Shovel pubs

Beer throughout the ages has been accepted as a ‘man’s drink’ and the stereotype is statistically validated, 67.1% of male drinkers cite beer as their most popular choice of alcohol according to ONS figures. The origin of beer is therefore all the more fascinating given that the history of brewing is strongly led by women. In Ancient Egypt, beer was almost entirely made and consumed by women, and throughout the 18th century, women all around the world were at the forefront of the craft. The brewing industry might still be seen by many as a bearded boy’s club, but “brewsters”— the medieval term for a female

brewer—have been at its helm for centuries. Until the 15th century, women were brewing and selling the majority of ale for both domestic and commercial use. After the Black Plague, when brewing became more commercialised, it moved firmly into the hands of men. Now women are regaining their position back at the helm, with Brewhouse and Kitchen seeing continued growth in their number of female brewers, pub-goers and interest in their Brewing Academy. Gail Bunn, Marketing Manager at Brewhouse & Kitchen explained: “Brewhouse & Kitchen are happy to be uniting women of the local community with other women around the world, to come together and brew a Unite Tribute beer this International Women’s Day. This will be later sold with the proceeds being donated to Breast Cancer Research. Dotdotdot Dance Company: In Body Award-winning Dotdotdot Dance embarks on a national tour of In Body this Spring 2020. Dotdotdot Dance is a company that creates thoughtful, multidisciplinary flamenco dance, investigating form and genre. It is currently co-directed by Noemí Luz and Magdalena Mannion. Their current production In Body, a triple bill of contemporary, multidisciplinary flamenco, was originally commissioned and produced by Sadler’s Wells and toured to Dancenet Sweden in 2019.

Dragged backwards through a waking dream, summoning memory through the earth’s vibration, and quivering under the external gaze. Three strikingly dynamic flamenco dance pieces that give a fresh perspective on the elements that make up flamenco, incorporating live music, electronic music and spoken word. Traditional solo dances are turned inside out, remolded and transformed into trios, exposing each choreographer’s personality through three vibrantly contrasting flamenco styles. The individual pieces have

been performed at Sampled 2017 (Sadler’s Wells & the Lowry) and The Sadler’s Wells Takeover of the National Theatre River Stage 2018. Overview: A lawyer takes the company DuPont to court under the suspicion that they may be poisoning the whole of America, with harrowing results. Dark Waters is the true story

of Robert Bilott (Ruffalo), a Cincinnati lawyer who took the company DuPont to court after a farmer lost 190 cows to mysterious circumstances. Although the cast all give terrific performances the standout has to be given to Mark Ruffalo. He delivers an emotionally straining performance which not only makes you care about his character, but also increases the tension of the film, which is very apparent in a scene involving a car park. Overall, Dark Water features some incredible performances and while the film may drag at points, it’s a film that needs to be seen and boasts a strong message that is very evident in the society we live in today.

NICK DIXON has appeared twice on the TV show Comedy Central at the Comedy Store, and was one of the standout performers on both occasions. His YouTube clip from that show led him, in 2017, to be chosen by Will Smith’s team to work onset with Will on the new Disney movie, Aladdin. Nick worked directly with Will, watching scenes and coming up with jokes to add to the script in real time. In 2017, Nick also opened for Gad Elmaleh, Europe’s biggest come-

dian with 7.8 million Twitter followers, for three nights at the Soho Theatre. Before that he supported Tom Stade on two national tours of the UK. For several years, he has appeared at all the top clubs in the country, such as The Comedy Store, Glee, and The Stand. He has also performed in LA at clubs like The Improv and The Ice House, as well as touring in Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. I was a comedian, then a van driver and now I’m a comedian again. Sometimes you don’t realise you’ve had a breakdown until you apply hindsight. I have recently supported Milton Jones on his UK tour ‘The Temple of Daft’ and will be doing so again this year on his new UK tour ‘Milton Jones is Out There’. I have also cropped up on BBC Three, Dave and a bit on Radios 4 and 5Live. In addition, I have taken 4 solo shows up to the Edinburgh Fringe the first of which won Best Show at the Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival Awards in 2012 and recently performed a small run of shows at the Soho Theatre. I am also one of a handful of vegan comedians (I know, sorry), so if you too are a Vperson, you may have seen me at either Vegfest or fundraisers for The Vegan Society or Humane Society International. I recently made a short film for BBC Three on the subject of being a vegan. Roffey Cricket Club launches re-vamp appeal

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Long standing Roffey Cricket Club has enjoyed a spectacularly successful run – after a series of promotions, not long after gaining entry to the Sussex Premiership, they won the league. And, along with excellent cup

results, their winning streak in the Premiership continued, with five titles and a runner spot in the last six years. The feeder sides have also done well with some impressive young players emerging, the 2nd XI proving the point with their debut entry to Division 2 of the Sussex League for the forthcoming season. The Club is

welcoming and well-supported, and the Committee has decided that it is time to recognise the Club’s achievements with a revamp of the clubhouse, painting, tidying, and adapting the main club house, toilets and behind the bar, by doing any DIY required, and generally sprucing up to give the Club a fresh look,

Membership Secretary Toni Jeal telling the District Post: “If we raise the funds, we’ll replace some of the furniture, too. It’s been a while since we freshened up the Club - that’s the aim!” Emma Worley says: “We’ve long been at the heart of the Roffey Community and are a very encouraging club for budding young cricketers from five years old, but our friendly clubhouse is in need of refurbishment to meet modern standards for social and corporate events, so we’ve set up a crowd funding page. Green. Occasional matches were held during the next three years, until Roffey Cricket Club was formed in 1904. The inaugural meeting was held in the Norfolk Arms pub in Roffey, near the team’s first playing facility, now the site of Kingsmead Nursing Home. The earliest building at the Club was a wooden shed, erected as a changing room in the years before the First World War. In 1932 the 3.3 acres cricket field was left in trust to the people of Roffey in memory of Colonel Innes who always appreciated the effort by members in the high standard of care attributed to the ground, it becoming officially known as ‘The Innes Memorial Ground’. The club continued to expand both before and after the Second World War. A new wooden pavilion was completed for the 1957 cricket season and was subsequently extended in 1968/69. Then, development of the current pavilion started in 1986 by building around the wooden structure, which was subsequently demolished from within, the most recent refurbishment taking place in 1999. Saturday February 29 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Carshalton Athletic 4-0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham did not enjoy their visit to Carshalton’s windy War Memorial Sports Ground last Saturday. In October’s home fixture four goals were scored – two per side – and this time the tally was the same, but with all four knocked in by Carshalton, two in each half, with Horsham’s fragile away form continuing to haunt them, despite an improved second half display. Coming into the game the two teams were juxtaposition in the table, but there was a marked gulf in the fortunes of the sides on the day, with Horsham suffering their biggest defeat of the campaign. With the gale at their backs, Carshalton put Horsham under

the cosh inside two minutes when Christie Pattisson converted Luke Read’s cross. A lengthy stoppage soon followed after Omar Koroma was felled by a blow from the ball to his head, terminating his involvement after he was rushed to hospital for concussion investigation. Although the tempest was making life difficult for the players, Carshalton kept pressing, only to be thwarted by an offside decision, with Ricky Korboa’s header going on to hit the bar. Horsham gradually came into the game, first with Harvey Sparks’ strike off target, before, in a more promising move, Alex Clark and Lee Harding combined, but again the radar was adrift, Horsham soon being made to pay when Ernold Haxhiu, subbing for the injured Koroma, got the ball past Hornets’ keeper George Bentley. The conditions turned even more miserable with increasing wind velocity and the advent of sleet, making ball control nigh on impossible at times,

and introducing an element of lottery, Horsham benefiting when a potentially dangerous cross was blown astray. Carshalton, though, should have scored again, but Korboa fluffed a golden one on one opportunity, and the hosts had further chances before the break, Haxhiu firing past the post and Korboa shooting straight to Bentley. With Horsham resuming two down in somewhat improved conditions, Lea Dawson induced a superb close save from Carshalton goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou ahead of Charlie Harris’ blast being tipped off for a corner, a similar set piece following when Clark’s strike was also turned away. Then, as Horsham strove to reduce the deficit they were aggrieved when a free kick was harshly awarded against them as they threatened the goal. And, anguish turned to dismay when, on 73 minutes a breakaway move culminated with Kershaney Samuels unleashing a rocket to put Carshalton three goals to the good with their first real scoring opportunity of the second half. Horsham kept battling, but Harding was too aerial and Perntreou neutralised Harris’ free kick. Carshalton then twisted the knife, when, again on the break, a well constructed foray up field ended with Korboa fashioning the Surrey side’s fourth. Horsham might have scored a consolation goal at the death, but a Harry Mills corkscrew was palmed clear by Perntreou. Sixth-placed Horsham will look to get back to winning ways when they return home to play Potters Bar Town (12th) on Saturday, having beaten the Hertfordshire side 2-0 in November’s corresponding away fixture. Then, on Tuesday (10th), eighth in the table Bognor Regis come to the Camping World Stadium.

Horsham thwarted at Southgate Saturday February 29 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Southgate Ladies 4-1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies were disappointed to come away from the Southgate Hockey Centre in north London’s Trent Park with nothing to show for their efforts in very cold conditions in a much interrupted game last Saturday. In the even first half Southgate went a goal up in the opening quarter from a short corner, with Horsham responding with some well constructed attacks. A prolonged – 40 minute – delay followed when the pitch was carpeted with ice from a violent hail storm. When action resumed Southgate scored again, but Horsham clawed back a goal through Charlotte “CJ” White’s penalty flick, the score remaining 2-1 at the interval break. Re-starting, Horsham earned

short corners and Fran Crossley’s strong strike was kept out by an amazing dive from the opposition keeper, leaving all to play for in the final quarter, when Horsham changed their format with three at the back. But, unfortunately the ploy did not work, the opposition getting through the gaps with two rather tame field goals, to run out 4-1 winners. With three games to go in this season’s competition, on Saturday sixth-placed Horsham play their last league home match, versus Bromley & Beckenham, one place above them in the table - against whom they drew in Kent in November’s reverse fixture. Horsham’s fate beckons after close defeat Saturday February 29 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1-2 Sevenoaks Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a freezing wind at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday, Horsham played impressively against promotion chasing Sevenoaks, holding them for much of the game only to be shaded by the odd goal well into the second half. Horsham began brightly, applying early pressure, especially with an excellent long through pass by Peter Neave, onto which no Horsham player could attach. A Sevenoaks short corner was then well saved by Horsham keeper Richard Hancock, before another outstanding denial, by the visiting goalkeeper, blocked a shot from Pete Richardson. End to end attacks followed, the majority instigated by Horsham. Then, a goal from Horsham Cricket Club’s opening bowler James Brehaut was disallowed for dangerous play, ahead of Will Dunnett quelling a foray from the visitors. When Joey Humphreys burst through he was barged off the ball, before player coach Andy Blood connected well with a short corner, but was marginally wide. Good Horsham defending kept Sevenoaks at bay, three short corners evaporating without reward. Horsham finished the first half strongly, with another Neave long ball and a barrage of attacks, featuring a trade mark long run by Humphreys feeding Matt Barnett, whose tight angle back hander just evaded the goal. Resuming at nil-nil, Sevenoaks launched an immediate fast attack, Ronny Taylor

reverse-sticking the ball home to put the Kent side in front, just before Horsham were reduced to ten men when Freddie Campbell was sin-binned. Brehaut was then just unable to convert from close quarters. Continuous Sevenoaks stick tackles were going unsanctioned, but, undeterred, Horsham’s Blood levelled the score with a deflected short corner. Amid many stoppages, Neave fed Barnett, but the ball was saved on the line, before Hancock had to rush out to deny Sevenoaks, but he was unable to prevent the visitors scoring from a well-struck short corner by Taylor mid way through the second half. With Horsham finding it difficult to retain the ball, Sevenoaks had two further short corners. Just before the end an excellent Neave drive resulted in a Horsham short, re-taken when a Kent player emerged too quickly, then, in the dying moments, unnoticed, a ball hit a defender’s foot without advantage being given to Horsham, the final whistle securing Sevenoaks narrow 1-2 win. Next Saturday, Horsham are on the road to sixth-placed Blackheath & Elthamians, then, on the 14th they have their final home game, against Old Bordenians (9th), before they are back in Kent with a visit to Polo Farm to take on Canterbury (5th) on the final weekend of the season - Saturday, March 21st. While it is mathematically possible for Horsham – on ten points – to survive, they would need to win all three remaining games to take them to 19, with both Eastbourne (10th) and London Academicals in the penultimate berth failing to progress from their present 18 points.

Saturday February 29 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 27-48 Westcombe Park Rugby Richard Ordidge Horsham’s young injury ravaged side battled hard but were ultimately overcome by promotion hopefuls, Westcombe Park, who enjoyed a comfortable 4827 win at Coolhurst in blustery conditions last Saturday. The visitors closed the gap on Havant at the top of the table, after the Hampshire side narrowly lost to Belsize Park in the fight for the only automatic promo-

tion place. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Park as the Green and Whites narrowed the gap to 38-27 midway through the second half before Westcombe Park pulled away with a converted interception try and a penalty. Park were soon on the scoreboard when Charlie O’Sullivan capitalised on a dropped ball. Tom Johnson replied with a penalty, then, for Park, Dan Hamilton ran through several missed tackles to score under the posts, converted by Harvey Young. Minutes later missed tackles in the centres saw Max Wilkins break to put Nick Hill away to score. Horsham responded in their first meaningful attack when Declan Nwachukwu

shrugged off a couple of tacklers to accelerate away to score under the posts, converted by Johnson to close the deficit to 10-19. Hamilton added his second to secure Westcombe Park’s four try bonus point and then Elliott Powell used his strength to power over and score his first try for Horsham 1st XV after a succession of good pick and go phases. The half finished with Young scoring, converted, to make the score 15-31 at the break. It looked difficult for Horsham to get back into the game as injuries took their toll and matters were made worse for the hosts when early in the second half Hamilton completed his hat-

trick, the game seemingly over with the score at 15-38. Horsham, though, had other ideas, scoring two tries in quick succession - Emmet O’Rahilly crossing the line after a penalty kick to the corner, a line out drive and a succession of pick and goes, well converted in the wind from wide out by Johnson. Nwachukwu then added his second following some good pressure play after which the ball was spun wide - 27-38. With Horsham forcing the play, Park’s George Perkins intercepted another wide pass and showed a clean pair of heels to run in from the half-way. Young converted and added a further penalty to seal the win and

snuff out the Horsham revival. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker reflected: “Knocks to key players throughout the game combined with a growing injury list conspired to see the prospect of an upset diminish early in the game. That said, the lads showed some great spirit against a side who are now desperate to win every game with bonus points and potentially rely on other teams doing them a favour in their quest for promotion. Nick continued: “Allowing a dangerous back line space on a hard track did not help matters, early mistakes allowing Westcombe Park to settle into the game, which proved closer than the score line ultimately suggested. The interception late in the second half was crucial as breathing space was granted to Park when a tense arm wrestle could have been the alternative for the remaining 10 minutes. “We took further knocks today, unhelpful with a tough away trip to Camberley on Saturday, but these are the realities of London 1 and our young team are acquitting themselves well to the challenges. Our man of the match went to Emmet O’Rahilly for his efforts against a strong pack giving us good front foot ball and getting on the score sheet amidst the strong second half performance.”

Horsham confirm impressive recovery strategy Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At a well-attended meeting at Horsham Cricket Club last Friday, following the player survey, 1st XI Captain Michael Thornely outlined Horsham’s plans for the forthcoming season, with return to the Sussex Premiership the top priority. Thornely said: “A lot of work has been done during the winter, especially on developing the new Players’ Charter setting out the joint commitment of both the Club and the players – an opportunity for both parties to emphasise their commitment towards success. We’ve got first class playing facilities here and we must commit to more training, with players helping on the ground on match days, fund raising, and with players looking

smart on the field. We had availability problems last season, so we need players to keep the selectors regularly informed as to their ongoing intentions, and, particularly, to encourage our younger players, we will be making greater use of social media opportunities.” James Brehaut then added: “We shall be sharing information on Facebook, and Twitter to get more people involved.” Ben Williams – returning to Horsham from Billingshurst as 1st XI Vice Captain – took over, saying: “We have produced a full programme of excellent events, starting with our very popular Golf Day in April and going right through to the second St Lucia Day in September, Darren Gough having played in the inaugural game last season. Meanwhile, we’ll be starting pre-season nets

soon and want feedback from players on our training arrangements. We’re completing the signing of a 1st team overseas player, who’ll be bringing a friend with him to play for one of our feeder sides. We want everyone at the club to enjoy their cricket, and we’re very open to any suggestions. Also, I’ve arranged for The Red Deer pub to sponsor our Player of the Week with the award of a free meal! ” Ed Clark, former Chief Selector and now Horsham’s League Representative, then took the floor, urging players to get behind the Club to ensure success by fully participating in everything on offer – on and off the field. With Horsham’s county cricketers, Tom Haines and Tom Clark in the audience - who will be playing for the club, along with Will Beer, when their professional commit-

ments allow - Michael Thornely then summed up: “We’ve got a new groundsman just starting, we’re improving the dressing rooms and will be introducing an honours board to celebrate our outstanding performances. We’re embarking on a new era at the Club and will be doing everything we can to enthuse participation, so let’s make the most of our abilities and opportunities and encourage our teammates, too. It’s a case of the more the merrier for player involvement!” Horsham’s 1st XI season runs, every Saturday, from May 9th (when they welcome Preston Nomads 2s to Cricketfield Road), through to September 5th. There will also be an extensive schedule of representative and other matches, with the return of Sussex – against Gloucestershire on August 9th – being the highlight.

Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help
