Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

Community step up to the Climate Crisis

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

their cowboy style interiors specialise in authentic style American wild west dishes – notably featuring grills, ribs and steaks and the Horsham outlet opened some 25 years ago on the site of the former Hop Picker pub, which had in turn replaced an older hostelry – The White Hart. Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a

challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

ers in the vicinity, concern being expressed regarding the intended loss of the Smith & Western facility from its present position, and further parking in an area of busy, narrow roads with tight corners. The intended size of the new building also raised worries over potential loss of privacy, along with the additional demand it might place on services.

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of

recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

SEP

“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others.

This year marks an outstanding achievement for an iconic Horsham shop – the much-loved Candy Box adjacent to the bandstand in the historic Carfax has reached its centenary, a remarkable milestone. Independent family businesses are an endangered species, so it is especially heart-warming to be able to salute 100 years of exceptional unbroken service to the community provided by the Candy Box.The bijou shop is welcoming and reassuring, transporting customers back to the slightly nostalgic world of the all but disappeared corner shop, containing ice creams, sweets, newspapers, magazines, soft drinks, and, rich smelling loose pipe tobacco in jars, and, more exotically, Cuban cigars. Horsham District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan which will guide future developments in the Horsham District until 2036. The public are encouraged to have their say on the draft Local Plan during the public consultation from 17 February to 30 March. The Government requires all local planning authorities to build a significant number of new homes in the coming years. This will present considerable challenges for the Council. A Horsham District Local Plan will seek to show how the District will deliver new homes while seeking to minimise the effect on the environment and landscape. The Plan will also support the delivery of community infrastructure, transport links and opportunities

for local jobs. The full Draft Local Plan is on the Council’s website from 17 February 2020 at www.horsham. gov.uk/localplanreview. Copies of the Draft Local Plan can also be viewed at the Council’s offices, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL and in all District libraries during normal opening hours. A summary exhibition about the Draft Local Plan will also be available to view in Horsham Library between 6 and 30 March. The Council is running a series of drop-in sessions across the District to enable residents to see a summary of the proposed options and raise any questions with the Council’s Planning team. The drop-in sessions are detailed below: 17 February: Billingshurst Cen-

tre, Roman Way, Billingshurst, West Sussex RH14 9QW: 4 – 8pm 20 February: Ashington Scout Hall, Church Lane, Ashington, RH20 3JX: 4 – 8pm 25 February: Henfield Village Hall, Coopers Way, Henfield BN5 9DB: 4 – 8pm 29 February: Swan Walk Shopping Centre, Horsham RH12 1HQ: 10am – 4pm 3 March: Ifield West Community Centre, 1A Dobbins Pl, Crawley RH11 0SZ: 4 – 8pm 4 March: Beeson House, 26 Lintot Square, Southwater, Horsham RH13 9LA: 4 – 8pm. Those who wish to receive updates, comment on the plan and give their feedback during the first consultation stage on the first complete draft of the Local Plan will need to register at www. horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview.

Horsham District Local Plan 2019-2036 We are reviewing our Local Plan for the Horsham District. The Horsham District Local Plan will set out how the District will deliver developments in a sustainable way and support the delivery of community infrastructures, transport links and opportunities for local jobs. The Government requires all local planning authorities to build a significant number of new homes in the coming years. This will present considerable challenges for the Council. NOTE: Anonymous representations will not be accepted and no inappropriate, derogatory or discriminatory comments should be made regarding an individual or a collective group of individuals. Any comments made of this nature will be disregarded.

All responses should be made on the official form and returned by 5pm on Monday 30 March 2020. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am really pleased that we have now reached the stage where we can start our public consultation. The Government has instructed all local authorities to build a significantly higher number of new homes in the coming years. “I do not underestimate the difficulty of this task, but if we are to have a new Local Plan ready for adoption in 2021 we need to work to a timetable and this consultation is part of that process. “I urge everyone to read the consultation document and to give us your views.”

Public consultation 17 February to 30 March We are running a series of drop-in sessions for residents so that we can talk to you about the Draft Local Plan and explain the options we are consulting on. You are welcome to attend any session.

New temporary housing accommodation for the homeless in the Horsham District New temporary accommodation has recently been constructed for Horsham District residents who find themselves facing homelessness, often through no fault of their own. This is the third temporary accommodation scheme completed to support local residents since late 2017, and further demonstrates the Horsham District Council’s commitment to reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of bed and breakfast accommodation for homeless households. The new accommodation has been specially customised to improve the wellbeing of its residents. The design and finish of the spaces

Candy Box notches up a sweet century Continued from the front page “The shop has evolved over the years and we’ve discovered what customers seem to appreciate – good, friendly old-fashioned service! The customers make the shop and it is very enjoyable to be on first name terms with many of our faithful regulars.” A more recently added facility is the outdoor café in the shop forecourt, which really comes into its own in the warmer months, Howard continuing: “It was great when that space became available for us to serve coffee, tea, cold drinks and ice creams, giving people the opportunity to relax for a while: its lovely to see them having an al fresco break in the sunshine!” The Carfax’s Richmond Terrace was built around 1840 and when the Candy Box opened 80 years later, Horsham was already an established shopping town. But, the shop began trading in a very different world – in 1920 George V, the Queen’s grandfather, was on the throne, Lloyd George was Prime Minister and Churchill was War Secretary. Rupert Bear made his first appearance, suffragettes were being jailed (but the first women jurors were being appointed), cars - taxed at £1 per

horse power – were becoming popular, replacing horses when the Metroplitan Police set up the Flying Squad, prohibition was starting in the United States and Hitler presented his National Socialist Programme to the German Workers’ Party. The Candy Box has seen Spitfires and enemy aircraft overhead, and, on its doorstep, markets, concerts, fair rides, Christmas celebrations, meetings of the local hunt and much, much more, Howard Bayliss adding: “The shop is in such a superb location, right in the heart of Horsham and quite often visitors pop in, saying that they’re so pleased to see it still thriving because it was an important part of their childhood when they were growing up in the area.” Long term local resident Hugh Waller sums up the customers’ appreciation of the Candy Box saying: “It is a real piece of Horsham’s history and shoppers get a warm welcome when they enter. I feel very strongly that these increasingly rare independent businesses must survive, so long may it continue!” The Candy Box, 21 Carfax, Horsham RH12 1EB – Horsham 254174 – a convenient place to pick up your District Post!

have been carefully constructed and include: increased daylight to eliminate stress, installation of security measures for safety, acoustic provisions to minimise noise disruptions, green outdoor spaces and ornamental boundaries to improve the wellbeing of the tenants who will occupy the properties. This latest development is made up of nine self-contained flats and will enable households to remain in the District and close to invaluable support connections with social and family networks. Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, commented: “As a council we will always seek wherever possible to

prevent homelessness in the best way we can. “I am delighted that the Council has completed another development of temporary accommodation to support households managing the challenges of being made homeless. “Temporary accommodation is a far better option for local households in priority need than bed and breakfast accommodation which is the usual alternative in these circumstances. “As always, prevention is better than cure. Anyone experiencing challenges with their housing circumstances is urged to contact the Council’s homelessness team as soon as possible”.

Age UK brand partners team up to become bigger and better for older people locally From February 2020, Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Age UK Horsham District will be working together in a close partnership, to provide services for older people in the area. The partnership, which may lead to a full merger, allows the charities to share their expertise, resources and local knowledge, ensuring services are sustainable and able to help more people than ever before. Existing services will continue to be delivered by dedicated staff

and volunteers in Horsham and it is anticipated that the partnership will allow the development of new activities and support options for people aged 50+. Overheads will also be reduced, meaning more of each donation can be directly invested in services. Maureen Vallon, Chair of Age UK Horsham District, said: “The decision to work with Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove like this makes perfect sense. Rather than compete in the same area, we can now pool our resources, to create the best possible services

in terms of choice and quality. Whether it’s loneliness, frailty, money worries or just an empty social calendar, we’re proud people in Horsham District can turn to us. Both charities are ambitious and our vision is to keep growing, so we can be here for older people for many years to come.” Helen Rice, Chief Executive at Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, said: “After a successful merger with Age UK Brighton & Hove, we know first-hand how pooling resources makes charities more efficient and effective. Older

people can only benefit as we look to expand what we’re offering, while still keeping the local focus which is so vital. I’m really excited about the future as we continue to support, inform, campaign and keep older people at the heart of everything we do.” Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Age UK Horsham District are brand partners of Age UK National, but exist as separate entities, each with their own Board of Trustees and separate finances. Both organisations have wonderful staff and volunteers who are committed to improving the lives of older people, so Trustees and management will work with them to preserve and enhance services. Age UK West Sussex, Brighton &

Hove is presently providing support by filling staffing gaps at Age UK Horsham District that have arisen through vacancies. Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove helps approximately 15,000 older people a year, tackling a range of issues like poverty, social care and loneliness. The charity provides information, advice and services for those who need help or support. Age UK Horsham District has a number of services in common with its larger partner, as well as some unique offerings like rural outreach. The collaboration allows each of the charities to benefit immediately, while undertaking discussions about merging in the near future.

Help town to remember Horsham’s wartime sweethearts this Valentine’s Day Horsham District Council, in partnership with Swan Walk Shopping Centre, is encouraging the community to remember its wartime sweethearts this Valentine’s Day as it prepares to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe over the Bank Holiday weekend of 8 to 10 May (VE 75 Weekend). In the first of several local initiatives to mark this national commemoration, a number of banners and posters featuring pictures of local wartime sweethearts from Horsham Museum will be appearing around the town. There is even a selfie photo point being set up in Swan Walk encouraging today’s couples to share their own pictures using the hashtag #horshamsweethearts .

Horsham’s VE75 Weekend will be one to remember in Horsham Town Centre with Friday’s Bank Holiday (8 May) planned as a community celebration day, The Broadwood Morris Day of Dance on the Saturday (9 May) and Horsham’s Great British Sunday (10 May) in aid of Samaritans. VE Friday will be a one off event remembering the joy (and sadness) in the community that war was over and with a town wide theme of the past and present. Organised by Horsham District Council, QM Studios and partners, including Community Link, Age UK, Chestnut Tree House, Freeman Brothers and more, there will be period entertainments, displays and plenty of traditional food and drink. It is planned that East Street will be

turned into one big street party with the aid of local restaurants. This will be a great opportunity for individuals and groups to get involved and to be part of the experience recapturing the spirit of the time. If you own vehicles or clothing of the period, are part of a community group, or work for a business that would like to get involved with the ‘Then and Now’ theming, please contact the event organising team via the email events@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Paul Clarke, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, explained: “VE Day is a great opportunity

to bring the whole community together and we are delighted to be able to support events and projects in celebration of this occassion. “This year is particularly special as it is the 75th anniversary of the end of war in Europe, and we want to help communities celebrate. It’s also an important opportunity to remember all those who gave their lives to keep our country free and to free Europe. “Do please come forward if you have any vehicles or costumes of the era and I would encourage as many of you as possible to come along and enjoy these unique celebrations and commemorations.

Step out under the stars for St Catherine’s Midnight Walk

Make 2020 the year you do something amazing! Go the extra mile

and join St Catherine’s Hospice for its popular Midnight Walk on

Saturday 6 June 2020. Last year, around 1,000 people

walked through Horsham to help St Catherine’s get a step closer to supporting more local terminally ill people and their families, at a time it’s needed most. This year, St Catherine’s needs you to step out under the stars, with your family, friends or colleagues, to make a difference to others in your community. The walk starts at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, and if you can, why not go the extra mile and sign up to walk 20 miles for 2020? Or sign up for the 13 mile, 7 mile, or 2 mile family friendly route. Alongside supporting their local hospice, many people walk in memory of someone they love. Perhaps you have someone special you can walk in honour of? Maureen, whose daughter-in-law, Nicola, was cared for by St Catherine’s, has taken part in several Midnight Walks in Nicola’s memory. She said: “I always have so much fun on the walk and whenever I cross the finish line I feel proud. Everyone cheers and congratulates you and it’s always a very poignant moment for me. I’d encourage others to take part in the Midnight Walk, because raising money for our wonderful,

local hospice is very important.” Rose Wood, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “Every year, it’s humbling to see so many people join us at our Midnight Walk. It’s an inspiring night where people remember their loved ones, and challenge themselves to walk as many miles as possible, to raise as much money as possible. Every person has their own reason for walking but they’re united in wanting to make sure that hospice care is there for other people when it’s needed most. “At the moment, St Catherine’s can only reach one in three people who need hospice care. By supporting our Midnight Walk, you’ll be making sure that in the future our hospice can help more people. Nobody should face death and loss alone, so we hope you’ll step out in 2020 for this very special evening.” Ready to step out? Sign up now at: www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine’s Events Team on 01293 447355. Make sure you sign up by 5pm on Monday 20 April to receive an exclusive early bird entry rate of £15. Your entry fee includes a free T-shirt, finisher’s breakfast and medal.

Storrington community Day set for 27 June From 1pm to 5pm on the Hormare Recreation Ground, Storrington The Storrington Village Day organising committee has started planning for this grand summer community event and promises a fun day of singing and dancing by local school children, a funfair and games, dog show, Morris Dancing, bar and bbq, Lions giant book fair, grand raffle, a display of classic cars from SADCASE enthusiasts, a scarecrow building competition, teas and cakes, as well as lots of charity, craft and trade stalls. This free annual event was revived last year and is led by The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District with strong support from Storrington & Sullington Parish Council and local

community clubs and groups. The new Committee Chairman, Rotary President Mark Foss, is keen to have a big village input and is encouraging as many groups as possible to join in and contribute to a fun day for the whole community. All proceeds from the event will be used to support many village activities for young people. Local young people benefit from 2019 Storrington Village Day Following a successful Storrington Village Day event in June, last year, cheque donations totalling £4,250 have been awarded to a number of local organisations in the community. Last year’s Village Day Com-

mittee Chairman, Tony Vaughan, took the opportunity to say thank you to the recipient organisations and their leaders, many of whom are volunteers, for the work they do with young people in the community: “We were delighted to see the successful revival of Storrington Village Day and it is great to see money raised at this very popular community event going straight back into supporting our young people in Storrington.” Tony also wishes to thank the event organisers and sponsors whose help in various ways enables the committee to invest in the event’s attractions.

Christ’s Hospital School hosted a special event around Rail Safety, on Tuesday 4 February, in conjunction with Sussex Community Rail. The event was attended by Year 5 pupils from five different primary schools, including Arunside Primary School, Greenway Academy, Shelley Primary School, St John’s Catholic Primary School and Holy Trinity Primary School. The event, which took place in the Art Department at Christ’s Hospital, began with a fun and educational rail safety workshop, courtesy of Sussex Community Rail Partnership. The 18 children then used the knowledge they had acquired to design and create posters for the purpose of promoting rail safety, under the guidance of Christ’s Hospital Art Teachers. The resulting set of colourful Rail Safety Posters will have text and logos added by the CH Art teachers and will go on to be displayed across railway stations on the Arun Valley Line (from Gatwick to Chichester) for Rail Safety Week in June. “The pupils were a delight to work with,” said Maddy Mills, Education Officer for the Sussex Community Rail Partnership, “The workshop

focused on railway safety and we discussed lots of different safety scenarios. I’m excited to see the pupils’ finished posters to promote rail safety.” Railway safety is part of the Go Learn education programme, delivered by the Sussex Community Rail Partnership and Southern Rail, which aims to help children develop confidence and skills for safe, independent travel on public transport to secondary school etc. If you know of a school that would like to book a free Go Learn workshop for their Year 6 pupils, please go to www.sussexscrp.org/education/primary-schools for more information. The children seemed to thoroughly enjoy the event and were treated to a couple of well-earned breaks for refreshments and lunch, as well as the chance to watch the Schools’ famous lunchtime band parade. Greenway Academy pupil Olivia said: “Today has been fun – I enjoyed making railway posters!” Her fellow pupil Xanthe added: “I really enjoyed making the posters, I LOVED the buffet lunch, and the band parade was pretty loud but it was still fun.”

Empire of the sensors

At an event hosted by Collyer’s, students recently gained an insight into the world of film and TV classification from a specialist BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) classifier, Joe Ruocco. Students were given a fascinating insight into the process whereby the BBFC applies its famous age rating cards, and saw the impact different classifications could have on the profitability of a cinematic release. The group learned about the processes the BBFC applies to reach its judgements and also saw the way their role has expanded into online media in the clas-

sification of films and TV for Netflix and Amazon. Students asked Joe a range of searching questions at the end, the most humorous being “How do I get your job?”! Jonathan Nunns, Collyer’s Head of Media, was thrilled: “Joe Ruocco is an engaging, charismatic and inspiring speaker. This was a brilliant event. It really brought the hidden world of classification into the students’ lives and showed the essential role of the age ratings in bringing films to the public. We owe huge thanks to Joe and the BBFC for making this event possible.”

Friends of Horsham Park award Collyer’s prize The Friends of Horsham Park have awarded a photographic prize to Tilly Stone, from Collyer’s Art and Photography department. Three of her photos were shortlisted for the award, with the winning entry a stunning sky with low sun and trailing clouds over Horsham Pond. It can be viewed on the Friends’ new website, along with the shortlisted photos, at: https://friendsofhorshampark. co.uk/competitions/ The competition was organised by the Friends of Horsham Park for all within the Collyer’s community. Students and staff were asked to focus on capturing what they love about the neighbouring Horsham Park. Sally Sanderson, Chair of the Friends of Horsham Park, said: “The entries were of a very high standard and it was difficult shortlisting the photos. There were some dazzling ones of light through the trees and of colours in the park. We loved the quirky images and different lighting which gave familiar places a new perspective. The competition was such a success that we will be repeating it again this year.” Laura Andrews, Head of Pho-

tography, was delighted: “The park is just waking up for spring, so it’s a great time for the next competition. We have lots of talented students who can capture the signs and colours of the park bursting into life.” Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “The competition has really

The Gardening Column Council’s successful prosecution

of local Horsham acupuncturist Horsham District Council successfully took an unlicensed acupuncturist from Horsham town centre to court (week commencing 27 January). The acupuncturist, Ms Yao Weinx known as LALA was found guilty of causing burns to an eighty-six year old pensioner. Worthing magistrates rejected the not guilty plea, concluding Ms Yao did cause an injury of significant harm, and displayed a wilful blindness to risk. Sentencing Ms Yao Wenix to twenty six weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months and awarding costs of almost £6000, the court concluded the general public had been exposed to harm and confirmed to Ms Yao she now

The Secret Garden Creating a secret oasis of calm in your garden that provides a bit of privacy and a peaceful place to sit and relax or catch up with friends and family doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. By taking some simple garden planning ideas and adapting them to your own outside living space you can achieve your perfect hideaway without resorting to planting a huge conifer hedge. If your existing fencing is unsightly give it a makeover by painting it or covering it in climbing plants. Climbers will add softness and greenery to a fence, encourage wildlife and provide fragrance. And, if you choose wisely, they can also be evergreen that gives a bit of structure to the garden in winter. Jasmine is a classic scented climber, whilst something like Clematis armandii is semi-evergreen. A covered seating area not only adds a bit of height, it allows you to have a secluded hideaway in which to enjoy your garden well into the late summer evenings. A corner of the garden can be a good place to build a structure with a solid roof – or an open roof decked in climbers. Clematis montana will cover a pergola in no time, or for repeatflowering go for scented roses. Evergreen screening is very effective at blocking out unsightly views whilst at the same time providing a sense of seclusion. For the smaller gardens have a row of single trees or trained trees, whose branches become dense over time such as the evergreen Magnolia grandiflora or Acer platanoides for training. Alternatively you could plant hedging that provides shelter

and acts as a sound barrier. Try a living wall with different species of herbaceous plants, including edibles, grown in pockets and fixed to a wall (great for adding interest to plain brickwork). An arbour makes a delightful seating space and can be erected against a fence or the side of a house or be freestanding. Smothered in jasmine, wisteria, roses or evergreen climbers, it’s not only lovely to look at but a natural sanctuary and with the addition of a bench or garden seating can be a go-to place for unwinding at the end of the day. As dreams of sitting in a sunny spot in the garden get closer to becoming a reality as the days get longer, there are still things that need doing in the garden. As the RHS says, this month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it’s time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges. Jobs for this month should include: Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow vegetables under cover Chit potato tubers Protect blossom on apricots and peaches Net fruit and vegetables to keep the birds off Prune winter flowering shrubs that have finished Divide bulbs such as snowdrops Prune Wisteria Prune hardy evergreen hedges Prune conservatory climbers Cut back deciduous grasses and remove dead grass from evergreen grasses.

had a criminal record. The unlicensed acupuncturist should not have treated the pensioner, who had hoped to find relief for her hip, but instead was left with a serious debilitating burn injury to her ankle. The lady was not aware that the law requires an operator’s licence to be displayed, and was shocked to find the business uninsured, unlicensed and operating illegally. The visit, which took place in 2017, resulted in excruciating pain, permanent scarring and loss of mobility for the lady in question. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, commented on the prosecution: “This was an extremely

shocking case which resulted in severe injuries. “Putting the public’s health and safety first is key for us as a council and we take offences like this very seriously. It is heartening that the courts share our views. “Our Environmental Health team will continue to do all within its power to make sure that local businesses comply so that the public are not exposed to harmful risks.” Businesses seeking help and advice regarding health and safety measures should contact the Council’s Environmental Health and Licensing team at publichealth.licensing@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215641.

Mum-of-three becomes first female Vicar of Horsham Mum-of-three The Reverend Canon Lisa Barnett has become the first female vicar of Horsham, following her appointment as Team Rector of St Mary’s Church. Her appointment at St Mary’s was confirmed by the Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, during a licensing service at the church on Thursday, February 6. As well as leading the team at the town’s biggest church, Rev Barnett will also support St Leonard’s Church in Cambridge Road and Holy Trinity in Rushams Road. Rev Barnett, who grew up in Worthing, began her working life as a teacher, but later trained for ordination and served as vicar of St Augustine’s, Scaynes Hill, near Haywards Heath for eight years.

She said of her new role: “Over recent months I have felt increasingly called to join the team at St Mary’s Horsham, and am delighted to take up the post of Team Rector. I am really looking forward to getting to know the congregation and the wider Horsham community. My aim is to both continue and build on the excellent work of mission and ministry in Horsham. “Having a woman vicar is still a big deal and there aren’t many who are leading big churches.” On top of her work as a parish vicar, Rev Barnett plays a pivotal role in recruiting new members of the clergy in Sussex and is the and she is one of the assistant diocesan directors of ordinands (ADDO). She became the first vicar in the Diocese of Chichester to have taken maternity leave, and has

actively supported other young women considering ordained ministry, and this was recognised in her recent appointment as an honorary canon of Chichester Cathedral. She said: “I really enjoy mentoring and particularly supporting women who are exploring ordination. I’m thrilled that I will be able to continue this work as part of my new role.” Rev Barnett and her husband Stephen have three children; seven-year-old twins Amy and Cara, and three-year-old Ross. Mr Barnett combines part-time work running a dementia club, with consultancy work with charities and social entrepreneurs. Rev Barnett replaces Guy Bridgewater, who left the parish in late 2018 to take up a new post at Bath Abbey.

After a short break to avoid the wet and cold weather, Horsham Scooter Safety is once again offering Safety Sessions to local mobility scooter drivers. Formed in 2018 by volunteers, the Sessions help scooter drivers to be safer on their machines by early recognition of possible hazards and showing how to deal with them. The free, 90-minute sessions are usually held in the town on Wednesday afternoons but they have also been held in Pulborough, Henfield and Billingshurst. Attendees may have their own scooters or be thinking of getting one. At each session, by appointment, there there will be a scooter available to ride. Volunteer, Scooter Tutor, Tony Ediss explained: “Even experienced scooter drivers benefit from a Safety Session as it is easy to fall into bad driving habits and a reminder of better ways could help avoid an accident. Reports of scooter accidents regularly appear in the newspapers and we know that with a bit more care, most could have been avoided. “We recommend a session with

us before buying a scooter as it can help in choosing and gives a person a good grounding in basic scooter safety. There is no cost to a scooter driver, other than giving up 90 minutes of their time. Their gain is added safety.” This is not a test and there is no pass or fail. The friendly Scooter Tutors talk on a one-to-one basis with each driver and accompany them on a short tour of local pavements whilst advising on coping with pedestrians, dogs on leads, crossing roads and unexpected obstructions. The Highway Code states that scooter drivers ‘should give pedestrians priority and show consideration for other pavement users’ (Rule 38). The Scooter Tutors make that very clear at all Sessions. They emphasise that when approaching people on narrow pavements, drivers should slow down or stop and, with a smile, invite the pedestrians to walk past. Considerate scooter drivers will win friends. Gigabit Full-Fibre Internet has landed in Horsham Full fibre straight to your home

We’re going to be neighbours!

For the first time, Horsham residents and businesses can get broadband connection speeds of up to one Gigabit (1000Mbps), which is among the fastest connection speeds available in the UK today.   Hey!Broadband recently

launched its full fibre broadband services. The first deployment included 5,000 premises in select areas near central Horsham, and other areas will be considered in the future. Up until now, Horsham residents could only get broadband

service over hybrid fibre-andcopper-based broadband, which meant slower speeds and dropped connections- especially during peak times. Full fibre, on the other hand, connects fibre from the exchange directly into homes and offices- and this makes a massive difference in terms of speed and reliability.Hey!Broadband offers Gigabit internet speeds for both downloading Sign up and uploading- a whopping twenty-two times heybroadband.co.uk faster than the average broadband speed in the U.K. Now many Horsham residents can go beyond the limits of copper

wire and upgrade their broadband to a full fibre connection, which is better suited to the needs of today’s households. It allows residents to connect several of the latest devices simultaneously such as 4K TV and low-latency HD games - and get full speed and no interruptions in service, even at peak times. Hey!Broadband also offers full fibre solutions Call for businesses. In us addition to Gigabit they can 0808speed, 168 1616 have bespoke solutions including leased lines and enhanced SLAs (Service Level Agreements) to suit each business’s needs.

Ahead of the launch, Horsham Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke, said: “We welcome the news that some residents of Horsham will soon have an opportunity to benefit from gigabit-capable broadband. “This is an exciting time and I am pleased we are getting on the front foot by discussing with suppliers how best to develop attractive commercial models to deliver better broadband coverage.” This long-awaited full fibre has been deployed by F&W Networks, a fibre infrastructure company. Its sister company, Hey!Broadband, sells broadband services on its network. Together, the companies plan to expand into other regions across the UK to bring full-fibre broadband to communities, as only 11% of homes in a few areas in the UK today have access to full fibre. Anyone who is interested in having the full fibre network deployed in their neighbourhood are encouraged to register their interest online on www.heybroadband. co.uk, or to call Hey!Broadband  on 0808 168 1616 or alternatively email them at info@heyb.co.uk; Doing so is free with no commitment to join. Those who register will be contacted as soon as there is any change to their coverage status.

Charities call for public support to receive £1,000 funding Three charities are hoping to be the recipients of £1,000 after being shortlisted as part of the ‘Proud to be Local’ initiative run by Kingsfold-based business NYEs Building Supplies. The builders’ merchant has announced the three finalists to make it onto the shortlist and is calling out to the public to vote for its favourite. The group with the most votes will win. The three causes that have been shortlisted are: The HOPE Charity Project, Findon The HOPE Charity Project has been set up to help families in Sussex and surrounding areas struggling to support their

children who are suffering from mental health issues. The charity offers compassion and comfort to the children, their parents and siblings through counselling, animal therapy, creative groups and parental support. The £1,000 would go towards running the services it offers. Ten Little Toes Baby Bank, Cowfold Ten Little Toes supports those in financial difficulties to bring up and support their babies and young children by providing essential equipment and clothing. The charity runs four baby banks for drop off and collection at Cowfold, Crawley, Worthing and Broadbridge Heath. Run by a team

of just four volunteers, it receives no funding. The £1,000 would be used to help support more families and create more storage space for donations. Upon Butterfly Wings, Crawley Upon Butterfly Wings provides comfort and a small sense of ‘normality’ to bereaved parents who have suffered the loss of their baby. Since the charity was set up in October 2011, it has donated thousands of knitted, crocheted and sewn burial clothing, blankets, cribs and teddies to hospitals, mortuaries and bereavement

services across the UK. The money will be used to help fund the costs associated with packaging and delivering these items. Rex Nye, who is Managing Director of NYEs Building Supplies, said: “There are three ways for people to vote - Facebook, at our depot and via email. Everyone is welcome to vote using all three methods and it is a great way to maximise the chances of winning for each group. We wish our three finalists the very best of luck.”

Votes can be cast in three simple ways. Either by visiting NYEs Building Supplies depot in Kingsfold along the A24 and posting a token in the relevant voting box, clicking the chosen group on the poll that will be pinned to the top of NYEs Facebook page, or by emailing proudtobelocal@dwnye. co.uk and putting the name of the group being voted for in the subject line (only one email vote per address will be counted). Voting will close at midnight on Sunday 15 March 2020.

Drusillas hands over cheque to Charity of the Year, The Children with Cancer Fund The results are in and Drusillas Park is pleased to announce that they raised a brilliant £2372.05 for their 2019 Charity of the Year, The Children with Cancer Fund. A cheque was handed to The Children with Cancer Fund last week, which represented the sum of donations raised by the Park over the course of last year. In addition to this, The Children with Cancer Fund also raised extra funds from awareness days hosted at Drusillas at various points throughout 2019. The Children with Cancer Fund was formed in July 1998 and is made up of a small voluntary group of family and friends. The charity strives to enable the families of children with cancer to have a quality of life that we would hope to have ourselves. Chloe Matthews, Community Fundraiser for The Children with Cancer Fund, said: “A lot of work involves arranging treats or buying children and families something they have missed out on, normally due to the fact that their money has been spent fighting the illness or burning up petrol going to and from the hospital for treatment. “We had a fantastic day at

Drusillas when they hosted our families for a group visit and we are so grateful to them for their continued support last year. The team here at The Children with Cancer Fund were so pleased to be the park’s chosen charity for 2019 and really enjoyed working together.” Drusillas’ handsome sloth, Gordon, also helped to raise funds for this amazing charity. Every time Gordon was adopted 20% of all the proceeds were donated to The Children with Cancer Fund. Drusillas’ Director, Cassie Poland, commented: “We were thrilled to be working with The Children with Cancer Fund last year. As Drusillas Park is enjoyed by so many young families it is very important to us to support a charity that provides such amazing care for children. We were very proud to partner with The Children with Cancer Fund.” Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. For more information please telephone 01323 874100 or visit www.drusillas.co.uk. For more information on The Children with Cancer Fund please visit www.childrenwithcancerfund.org.uk/

Exciting new events at Amberley Museum planned for this year Opening over the winter for the first time has proved to be a successful experiment for Amberley Museum and attention now turns to the events programme for 2020. As well as the traditional industrial and transport-themed weekends and school holiday family activities, there are some new fixtures on the events calendar to thrill both existing and new visitors, including Steampunk, a Sculpture Trail and a weekend devoted to James Bond.

Following a successful taster event last November, Steampunk returns to Amberley on 14th & 15 June. The Museum’s industrial and transport backdrop is a natural fit for steampunk, which celebrates the future from a Victorian perspective, with clock-work and steam-powered machinery playing a big part. Steampunkers will be attending in their finery - ladies in wonderful Victorian burlesque dresses and gentlemen in goggle-shod top hats and all

manner of costumes to become retro-industrial businessmen, Victorian sci-fi characters or military veterans. The event promises to be quite an experience for those new to the genre, but photography is welcome and there will be trade stands for visitors to acquire their very own outfits and steampunk memorabilia. Musical entertainment is planned throughout the weekend, including a cabaret on Saturday night, with acts including The Captain of the Lost Waves, Sheriff

WHAT YOU GET!

GIN TOURS

Ants Trepaneur and Mr Alexander’s Travelling Show already confirmed. Look out for advance tickets on the Amberley Museum website from March. In mid-March the Museum will open another ground-breaking event – a Sculpture Trail. Running from 14 March until 28 June, over 40 exhibits from both established and up and coming contemporary artists will be displayed across the 36 acre site. The juxtaposition of these against the backdrop of historic industrial buildings will be exciting – if not challenging – to see. For something completely different, another major new event is on the weekend of March 28-29 and will highlight the Museum’s role in the 1985 James Bond film A View to a Kill, the last involving Sir Roger Moore. The scenes leading to the blowing up of May Day were filmed at the entrance of a quarry tunnel near Brockham Station at the Museum, which appeared as Mainstrike Mine in the film. The James Bond Weekend – Shaken not Stirred will include a showing of A View to a Kill, together with archive footage of the filming at Amberley, a display of Aston Martin cars with a cavalcade at 2pm each day, a Q and A with Bond experts from the official 007 Magazine group and a codebreaker trail for youngsters.

Two musical acts will perform Bond themes over the weekend – ‘Vintage Candy’, a Sussex based duo and ‘Sarah Sussex Violinist’ will be coming along to provide some exciting violin interpretations of Bond and other cinematic theme music. Museum staff and volunteers will stage a humorous re-enactment of film scenes at Amberley involving Zorin and his workers, James Bond and Stacey Sutton. The original Zorin train engine and trucks will be running in and out of the mine entrance. It is hoped that visitors will come dressed as Bond or co-stars and win spot prizes for best dressed – with younger aspiring spies or actors taking part. The event will co-incidentally precede the release at the beginning of April of the 25th Bond film No Time to Die. All events (apart from the evening Steampunk cabaret on 14 June) are included in normal admission prices. Gift-aided tickets are £15 for adults, £13 for concessions and £8 for children aged 4-15 (under 5s free). Family tickets start at £31. Amberley Museum is open 10am until 4.30pm Wednesdays to Sundays with last entry one hour before closing. The Limeburners Café serves a variety of sandwiches and snacks with hot food at lunchtime.

Five wine inspired treats for your mum this Mother’s Day Our mum does a lot for us throughout the year, and sometimes it can be easy to forget to let her know just how much she means to you. Mother’s Day is fast approaching, so it’s the perfect opportunity to make her feel extra special and really spoil her for the day. We’ve come up with a selection of great gift ideas for all the amazing wine-loving mums out there, so have a read below to find the perfect gift to say thanks for all she does for you on Sunday 22nd March. Wine tasting at home Why not set up a wine tasting at home? Get a few of your mums favourite wines in, select a menu of food pairings to sample with each wine and relax as you enjoy each other’s company. You could choose to pair your wines with canapes, cheese or even chocolate. Taste each wine alone first, and then compare how the taste differs when enjoyed with your chosen food pairings. This is a great way to really test your wine tasting skills, whilst also enjoying some quality time together. Chocolate wine truffles If your mum is as much of a chocoholic as she is a wine lover, then why not combine the two

and gift her a box of luxury chocolate wine truffles? Local chocolatiers, Noble and Stace, make a delicious collection of hand dipped and decorated truffles featuring Sparkling Wines from a variety of local Sussex Vineyards. Vineyard tour and lunch What says ‘I love you’ more than planning a day out to spend some quality time together, doing something she loves? As the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, late March is the perfect time to visit a local vineyard for a tour of their estate. Bolney Wine Estate in West Sussex offers a unique vineyard experience where you can stroll through the acres of vines and marvel at the many different varieties of grapes that go into their fantastic wines. They have a range of tours including a cheese and wine tasting and an afternoon tea package to treat you mum to. What’s more, if you visit over the Mother’s Day weekend, you can enjoy 20% off their tours when booking. Visit bolneywineestate. com for more information. They also have The Eighteen Acre Café and Restaurant where you can indulge in brunch or Sunday roast, and this Mother’s Day you’ll even get a complimentary

A Unique Tribute to a Legend This is it, people. The moment has arrived... Following a one-off, sell-out show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last summer, Tim Vine is bringing Plastic Elvis to a town near you. Backed by the amazing ‘The High Noon Band’, Plastic Elvis will shake, smoulder, and try to control his hair. In the end, he’ll break your heart as he belts out some of the King’s greatest hits; and with special guests John Archer as Big Buddy Holly, and songwriting legend David Martin (who wrote four songs for the real Elvis). Tim says: “This isn’t a stand up show, but a concert dedicated to my

favourite performer. When I was eleven years old, I would stand in front of my bedroom mirror and mime to the whole of 1972’s Elvis: As Recorded at Madison Square Garden album. This is a tribute act that is forty years in the making. Well, the waiting is over. It’s time to go public.” Warning: this show may contain moves that even Plastic Elvis himself isn’t expecting. Performance: Saturday 23 May, The Hawth, Crawley. Tickets: Available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www. hawth.co.uk

glass of Bolney Bubbly for your mum to enjoy. Countryside walks through the vines Bolney is a beautiful part of the world, located in the heart of rural Sussex. Surrounded by acres of countryside and an abundance of wildlife all around, it really is a haven of peace and tranquillity. There are a whole host of walks you can enjoy in and around Bolney, and many of these take you through the very vines that create

the wine estates award-winning products. Venture through the woodland, visit Bolney village and explore the vines with your mum this Mother’s Day. If you come in the morning you might even spot roe deer slinking between the vines, and by afternoon the dragonflies will be out. You could even make an occasion of it and pack up a delicious picnic to enjoy on route. Wine hamper Make up a bespoke hamper for

your mum to indulge in to show her just how much she means to you. Include a bottle of her favourite wine, a box of luxury chocolates, a candle featuring her favourite scents and a good book about English Wine such as ‘A Taste of English Wine: An Introduction to English Wine and the Vineyards of Britain’ for her to sit back and enjoy as she relaxes in the spring sunshine. Top duo happy to be back in Horsham

Described by Mike Harding as “one of the hardest-working acts on the folk scene”, Winter Wilson have certainly lived up to this description over recent years. Now, three years after their last appearance, the duo bring their sublime music and sense of “joyous rebellion” back to Horsham on Sunday 16th February. Already well known around the UK’s folk clubs and festivals, Kip Winter (vocals, piano accordion, flute, guitar) and Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar, banjo) became full-time musicians in 2012 and haven’t looked back since. In addition to extensive tours of the UK and Western Europe, the pair have toured Australia (twice), New Zealand and Canada. “Nearly eight years on, it still feels like a bit of a dream,” the couple told us. “Mind you, it’s hard work too, and Tal-

lullah (our trusty campervan) has covered an awful lot of miles all over Europe”. Whilst their nine studio albums have met with critical acclaim, it is in live performance that Winter Wilson really excel, bringing a sense of intimacy to every venue, whether it be a tiny house concert or a festival main stage. Indeed it was their live performances and stage presence that led to the pair being invited to tour with folk-rock legends Fairport Convention in 2018, an opportunity that was just too good to miss. “We were thrilled,” commented Kip, “and it just got better as the 29 date tour progressed. At the end of the tour we were also invited to appear with Fairport on stage at Cropredy Festival, in front of almost 20,000 people!” Winter Wilson then released “Live & Unconventional”, a live album, recorded on the tour and featuring members of Fairport on three tracks. “Loads of people had suggested that we release a live album,” said Dave, “and let’s face it, there wasn’t going to be a better chance to record one.” Once again the critics loved it: “If you need evidence of just how special the duo Winter Wilson is, then Live & Unconventional delivers in abundance. From track one.... they clearly have those attending in the palm of a very ca-

pable hand.” Steve Caseman, RnR Magazine “A glorious parade of 15 songs and just enough of the betweensong presence to show how persuasive a live draw the couple are.” David Kidman, LivingTradition Magazine “From the first notes Kip and Dave exude confidence and I realised how well the songs I’ve only heard as studio recordings have developed in the live set. If Live & Unconventional doesn’t promote Winter Wilson up to the next division there is no justice.” Dai Jeffries, Folking.com So what’s next for Winter Wilson? “Well, this year we’ll be touring all over the UK, and there’s a couple of trips over to Germany and the Netherlands, plus possibly a return to Canada. It’ll be tiring, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!” If you’d like to see (and hear!) what all the fuss is about, then Winter Wilson will be playing at Horsham Folk Club from 8pm on Sunday 16th February. The club meets every Sunday evening from 8pm till 10:30 at the Normandy Centre on Denne Road and promises a warm welcome for performers and audience members alike. Entry costs just £8 on the door (or £5 for members). For further information, please visit www. horshamfolkclub.co.uk

YMCA fade to defeat in disappointing second half Horsham YMCA 1-2 Eastbourne Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Having been beaten 5-nil by Eastbourne Town in the league last September and then jettisoned out of the FA Vase by them two weeks later, YM were hoping for revenge at Gorings Mead last Saturday, and after the first half when YM had the edge, three points appeared to be a distinct possibility. But, Eastbourne looked a different team after the break, leading for the last 40 minutes, with YM getting a consolation goal at the very end. Tony Nwachukwu and Matt Daniel broke through early in the game, both coming down in the area without sanction, Johden De Meyer then sending over a cross for Daniel to head just wide. A series of YM incursions followed, before Eastbourne came to the party, but with just a soft shot straight to YM keeper Aaron Jeal. Eastbourne skipper Simon Johnson then ballooned over and Sam Cole blazed well wide, and with YM suddenly under defensive pressure, Dan Bolwell headed over. YM’s Guy Harding then hobbled off, just before the mid point of the half. Daniel subsequently lost out in a close run chase for the ball with Eastbourne keeper Chris Winterton, but did promptly get a shot in, nobody being there to connect with the rebound. After letting fouls come and go without using his whistle, the ref did eventually blow up – for a YM barge – but Eastbourne’s free kick just outside the area was too aerial. Eastbourne were now getting more possession, but without unduly troubling Jeal. A free kick to YM followed, for an elbow to the face, Eastbourne breaking away for Dan Evans to clear off the

line. The ball came up field to Adam Hunt, who tripped at the critical moment, his shot being well adrift, the first half ending goal-less after a YM corner came to nothing. Early in the second half, Jack Langford was through and clear, but shot direct to Jeal, who then needed to dive full length to keep out another Langford strike. Daniel was just off target before YM had a reprieve, an Eastbourne pile driver bouncing back out from the underside of the bar, with Jeal saving the rebound shot. Then, with Eastbourne in the ascendancy, a cross came across from the right for Langford to tap in on the hour mark. Now finding pace, an Eastbourne header went to safety via the crossbar. YM made substitutions and found the side netting, Dean Lovegrove having to avert Eastbourne danger at the other end. Jeal then pulled off a great save from a header, but could only parry the ball away, Bolwell being on hand to get Eastbourne’s second with a quarter of an hour of normal time remaining. With Eastbourne retaining the ball far better, they earned two corners in quick succession, a dangerous cross and a diving header from Cole worrying YM’s defence. Despite Eastbourne’s dominance, YM were awarded a free kick just beyond the area and although that came to nothing, another YM attack culminated with Jack Ryder heading home. Yet, with only 30 seconds left on the clock YM had no further opportunity to claw back a point, Eastbourne deserving to win because of their second half superiority. This Saturday YM head for the coast to take on top of the table Lancing at the Sussex FA Headquarters. Lancing is six points clear of second-placed Newhaven.

Horsham return to winning ways

Photo by John Lines Saturday February 8 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 2-0 Haringey Borough Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham notched up a comfortable win – ending an unbeaten run, with their first clean sheet for almost a month, and their second win of the year - in front of another good

crowd in pleasant, almost springlike weather, at their Camping World Stadium last Saturday, putting them back into play off contention. Benefiting from consistent possession, Horsham opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Lee Harding pounced on Haringey keeper Jonathan Miles’ failure to gather Greg Cundle’s shot, the ball coming out to Harding, who took the aerial route to get past Miles. A Horsham

Blistering first half display heralds big YMCA win Thursday February 6 – Southern Combination Football League – Under-23 (West) Broadbridge Heath Under 23 1-6 Horsham YMCA U23 Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On an extremely cold night at the Countryside Stadium, top of the table YMCA’s Under 23 side were very comfortable winners of the local derby at Broadbridge Heath, thanks to a rampant six goal first half performance. The second half was far more even, Heath edging it, but the damage had been done before the interval, leaving Heath far too much to do after the break. Sam Lemon scored from the left in the opening minute, before Johden De Meyer put YM further ahead from the spot, with a welltaken penalty into the top right, following a trip in the box. And, when Leon Eales fired in from the left YM were leading 3-0 with little more than 10 minutes on the clock. YM were maintaining maximum possession, but BBH did have an opportunity when the ball was crossed towards Ben Whiteley, but he was unable to connect. De Meyer then headed into the side netting and a long range shot from Aaron Ryder went wide. Mid way through the half, Lemon broke through, leaving defenders in his wake, before crashing in a great solo goal to put YM four up. Ten minutes later, when Eales was brought down, YM had a free kick just outside the area and after it was put off for a corner, another uncleared set piece followed, leading to Eales blasting in a long range rocket. Heath responded, but Carvalho was thwarted, then YM keeper Jack Webb Olley was tested, ahead of further YM

shots without Alfie Hadfield, busy in the Heath goal, being unduly troubled. Eales was then felled, Hadfield’s excellent diving save kept the penalty out, but, after the red mist descended the keeper was sin-binned off, Pearce scoring from a distance to extend YM’s advantage to 6-0 with half time beckoning. The second half started with a YM corner before Eales had a golden, but missed, opportunity to notch up his hat trick from close quarters. Another YM corner followed, with Sam Lemon firing across the goal. Two YM subs then came into the action, Brad Gill being too aerial, and Simon Lockwood, usually a goalkeeper, seeing his shot pushed clear. After a YM corner, Lockwood broke through again, only to be denied by unsanctioned hand ball. Then, for YM, Ben Harrison’s shot landed on top of the net. To their credit, Heath kept going and were rewarded with two corners in quick succession - and a consolation goal for Harry Balfour in the 89th minute. Lovegrove’s late volley was just wide, but YM had lost rhythm, the advent of subs disrupting the flow. Yet, in the dying moments, they headed just over, before, with the final shot of the game, Lemon hit the post. Heath had put in a better showing in the second half, but their honest assessment was that their overall performance was under par.The win puts YM U23s five points clear at the top after 11 games, with just 13 goals conceded. Lancing is second, having played 14 times. Broadbridge Heath’s first team’s game away to Eastbourne United, scheduled for last Saturday, was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. This Saturday Heath’s senior side return home to welcome Steyning.

free kick by Alex Kelly then thundered wide before Haringey were stirred into action with an attempt from Roman Michael-Percil, but George Bentley in the Horsham goal was not unduly troubled. With the interval beckoning, the Hornets pressed for a second goal, Chris Smith and skipper Jack Brivio combining, only for the promising move to finish with the ball leaving the field. There was still time for Michael-Percil to unleash a shot,

but, again, Bentley was up to the task, the half ending with Horsham a goal up. On the resumption Horsham immediately made their intentions clear, Harding supplying Smith to evade Miles, only to be defeated by the tight angle. Horsham created more chances, but were unable to convert, notably when live wire Harding’s shot was parried by Miles, with Smith being just unable to take advantage. Although Cundle

then pressed to no avail, Haringey were not posing any real threat, a modest effort from Anthos Solomou creating no alarm, until – with a quarter of an hour of normal time remaining – Cundle put the result beyond doubt when he maximised Brivio’s low cross. Horsham made changes and Cundle kept pushing, but, while he connected with another Brivio feed, he was off target. A late opportunity to go further ahead came when Horsham were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute, but the spot kick jinx returned, sub Rob O’Toole being unable to beat Miles’ dive. Dylan Merchant then headed onto the crossbar, but the reverses mattered not, Haringey having long since been well beaten. The win places Horsham sixth on 51 points. Runaway leaders Worthing lost, as did Folkestone, but Worthing has 63 points, and runner up Folkestone 58. Cray Wanderers are third, on 54, Hornchurch fourth on 52, along with Carshalton, fifth. Hornchurch have two games in hand, the other five teams in the top six having all played 29 times. On Saturday Horsham travel to ninth-placed Leatherhead, who beat Bishop’s Strortford 3-1 last weekend.

Deserved draw stems flow of Horsham away defeats Wednesday February 5 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Kingstonian 1-1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Hornets were delighted to call a halt to their five match losing run when they shared the points with Kingstonian at St George’s Field, Tolworth, in the first engagement between the two sides for over five years. It look a very late goal from Gary Charman to clinch the draw, but it was a well-deserved win, Kingstonian having enjoyed an excellent FA Cup campaign – twice necessitating the rescheduling of the Horsham fixture - and only losing three times in all formats at home this season, belying their mid table position. Horsham took the field with Chris Smith replacing Greg Cundle and Will Miles coming in for Joe Shelley (injured), with Dylan Merchant and Kieran Lavery starting instead of Steve Metcalf and Rob O’Toole respectively. The first half began with intent from both sides, with lusty tackles aplenty, Horsham generating threatening incursions through Harry Mills, Harvey Sparks, Alex Kelly, Smith and, with his head, Lavery, yet none of these opportunities were converted. But, Horsham were relieved when the lively Eddie Dsane’s shot was parried off for a corner, from which a header was bustled off the line. Then, the Hornets had another chance when Jack Brivio,

Lee Harding, and Smith combined only for the final strike to be negated by Fabio Saraiva. When action switched to the other end, Sean Clohessy unleashed a likely looking cross, but keeper George Bentley just managed to push it away. Bentley’s counterpart, ex Hornet Rob Tolfrey, then had to be at his best to keep out a blast from skipper Brivio. After Bennett had tormented the Hornets, first with a header and then a testing drive, Harding broke through, the woodwork coming to Kingstonian’s aid, neither side being able to fashion a goal in the even first half. Play resumed in similar bright mode, Lavery and Harding being in contention, but without effect, until - after another Horsham foray - Kingstonian went in front when the always challenging Hector latched onto a clearance

and lobbed the advancing Bentley. With Horsham pushing to get back on level terms, a Smith corkscrew evaded the goal. A period of stalemate ensued, with the game in danger of over-heating, Brivio thwarting a Kingstonian attack and then seeking to supply Smith. When Dawson seemed to be violated in the area, Horsham’s penalty appeal fell on deaf ears. Sub Taurean Roberts was then involved in a confrontation with two opponents, but again play was waved on. Niggling fouls took over, creating stoppages, and, with Horsham fans fearing that they would be denied, the equaliser came in extra time - who else but late substitution Gary Charman being in prime position to finalise Horsham’s impressive build up, sending travelling supporters home happy.

Downhearted YMCA squander two goal lead Tuesday February 11 Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Hassocks 3-2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a game that YMCA should have won on paper – and on the field. Prior to the match Hassocks were next to bottom and after seven minutes YM were two goals up and playing well, but Hassocks gradually worked their way into the contest, and, to their credit, kept pressing to be rewarded with an almost posthumous win with three second half goals, YM being reduced to ten men. The game had been rescheduled from February 1st, when the pitch was waterlogged, as it was again in the wake of storm Ciara, but conditions on Tuesday’s cold night were fine for football, and YM began with positive intent. An excellent build up culminated with Sam Lemon’s clean strike, putting YM ahead in the fourth minute, then YM promptly doubled their lead, a cross enabling Lemon to tap in a simple goal from close quarters. YM were ruling the roost, looking likely to win comfortably. A wayward pass let Hassock’s Liam Benson through, but the move fizzled out, before

Lemon unleashed a long range strike and then broke through again, Johden De Meyer testing the home defence, only to blaze over. After Hassocks pushed forward, getting a corner, Lemon and De Meyer kept the hosts on their toes, but although keeper Charlie Pugh had to dash out to negate YM danger, Hassocks finished the first half strongly. YM keeper Aaron Jeal left his line to quell a foray, Pat Gibbs clearing the rebound from the goal mouth, then Hassocks put a wave of attacks together - James Westlake sending over a floater that Jamie Hillwood was unable to latch onto, followed by a speculative strike ballooning over and, just before the interval, James Littlejohn shooting to Jeal. On the restart it did not appear that Hassocks, pushing hard, were two down. A goal was coming and when Littlejohn hit the bar Westlake slotted home. YM responded with crosses from Lemon and Hunt, but to no avail. Hassocks were hustling for every ball and YM’s plight worsened when, with half an hour remaining, Adam Hunt was given a straight red card for too robust a tackle. From the free kick Westlake shot over and then Harvey Blake’s dangerous cross was punched clear by Jeal, before, in an increasingly rare YM attack, Lemon broke through but was off target. In another Hassocks set piece a Westlake

cannonball crashed off the bar to safety, but an equaliser looked certain. Lemon did respond with two incursions, the second cleared by Pugh, but Littlejohn threatened again. With the clock running down fast YM’s hopes of staying in front were boosted when De Meyer and Jack Ryder combined to earn a corner, but without success, and when Jeal’s onrush at the other end culminated in a collision, the resultant penalty was calmly converted by former YM favourite Phil Johnson. Desperate to salvage a point, YM went on the attack, and, after a corner, sub Tony Nwachukwu broke through, but the score remained level and, with Hassocks going for broke, Jeal did well to catch their high corner. A long delay ensued when the ref was struck in the face by the ball, but Hassocks weren’t to be denied, and in four quick fire corners YM hardly seemed to be competing for the ball and it came as no surprise when George Galbraith-Gibbons headed home to steal the game at the very death, to the understandable jubilation of the Hassocks camp. Having been in undisputed command with a two goal cushion, the outcome was beyond disappointing for YM, frustrated President Ron Moulding telling the District Post: “Hassocks deserved to win, they wanted it more than us.”

Horsham Ladies win well Saturday February 8 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 4-2 Canterbury 2nd XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies avenged October’s narrow away defeat against Canterbury with a strong win at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday. Fran Crossley put Horsham ahead in the first quarter when she converted Laura Coggins’ pass into the circle with a first time strike high into the goal. Canterbury equalised from a break away, leaving the score at one apiece at the interval. But, the second half was all Horsham, firstly Coggins scoring a slow motion field goal after her first two strikes had been parried. Ladies’ Club Captain Charlotte, “CJ” White, then put in a penalty flick to give Horsham a 3-1 lead, boosted to 4-1 when Rosie Firth

got the ball home. Canterbury got up field, Alice Brett maximising, with her second goal of the match, from a three on one overload, but the game had long since been up for the Kent visitors, creating frustration. Horsham might have scored again, but after the ball was stopped by feet on the line, the resultant penalty flick went begging, for the second week running. Fran Crossley told the District Post: “This was a good result for us – we needed the points! We’ve got a long trip to Chelmsford on Saturday, which might be a bit tougher, although we beat them 2-1 at home in October and they’re one place below us in the table.” Wimbledon is top, with Barnes second, while Horsham is sixth, with Ipswich, 13 points shy of Horsham, bottom and Broxbourne in the penultimate berth, eight behind our ladies.

Horsham men’s First XV win prestigious league award Photo courtesty of The Horsham Rugby Club

Saturday February 8 – Premier – Division 2 East Lewes 3-2 Horsham

Rugby Richard Ordidge- Sports Reporter Horsham Rugby Club is delighted to announce that the recipients of the Oracle Contractors & Talenterprize Horsham Rugby Club Team of the Month for January is the Men’s 1st XV. Having been promoted to

London 1 South at the end of last season, which equals the highest level the team has ever played, the boys won all four league fixtures in January, as part of a six match winning run which saw Horsham climb to seventh and has already guaranteed safety and consolidated the team’s

position in this league for next season, which was the objective last September. Declan Nwachukwu heads the try scoring with 15, followed by Vince Everett with 7, while Dan Cass, Jonny Goward and Jordan Smith have made the most appearances (18).

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter When the teams last met – in the corresponding home fixture in October – Lewes won 6-4, despite Joey Humphreys’ superb hat trick, and, seeking retribution, with their strongest available team and good camaraderie in the squad, Horsham were hoping for three points this time. Although this was not to be, Horsham could well have won after starting well and having more of the ball than Lewes, but it was a learning curve regarding composure for some of Horsham’s younger, less experienced players. Horsham’s goals came from Grieg Baillie and a really impressive strike from Sam Macdonald, set up by Canadian overseas player Matt Barnett. But, Horsham were thwarted by their former goalkeeper Andy Isaacs, now with Lewes he made several outstanding saves – and Horsham only

generated two short corners. Lewes play a very defensive style with a half-court press then fastbreak counters, and Horsham rather played into their hands by giving the ball away to them all too frequently. Harry Heitman, Matt Hickman and Alex Lloyd scored for Lewes, Hickman and Lloyd bring their seasonal tallies to 13 and 10, respectively, Lewes missing a penalty, saved by Horsham keeper Richard Hancock. The game ended with Horsham in command and Lewes in panic mode, but Horsham were left rueing their mistakes. With 18 points available from their final six games, Horsham will be targeting a win when they meet tenth-placed Eastbourne at Christ’s Hospital next Saturday (13.30 pushback). Meanwhile, Horsham remain at the foot of the table with 7 points, below London Academicals, who have 15, and are shaded by a tightly bunched group. After 13 wins from 16 games, Wimbledon is the clear leader, 10 points ahead of current runner up, Old Georgians.
