Horsham surgeries merge for 18,000 patients phil dennett News Editor

About 18,000 patients will be served by the merging of the Courtyard and Riverside GP Surgeries in Horsham from tomorrow. The NHS claims that the partnership will provide an enhanced level of quality care amid shortage of Government money and increases in the area’s population. It says doctors and staff at the two practices have been discussing how they can maintain the high quality care that their patients receive, while in the future enhancing the range of services and appointments that are made available to them. With increasing pressures on resources, allied to the projected future population increase in Horsham, both surgeries believe that by working together they will be able to increase the range of services provided and will be better placed to continue delivering high quality care to their patients, both now and in the coming years. Following discussions with NHS England, Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group and the Patient Participation Group, from October the GPs at the Courtyard and Riverside practices will come together to form one partnership, caring for approximately 18,000 patients. Both surgeries will continue

to provide care to their patients in the usual way, but by working together they will be able to offer them a wider range of services in the future. Dr Mark Chopin, senior partner at Courtyard Surgery, and Dr Matthew Davies, partner at Riverside Surgery say, “What initially became apparent was how closely aligned our two practices are, sharing a common philosophy of wanting to do more for our patients, but being constrained by our relatively small sizes. We are both passionate about the traditional model of general practice: being able to see your own doctor and having continuity of care. By joining forces now we will be able to start offering more services for our patients whilst retaining our core values.” Commenting on the new arrangements, David Phillips, committee member of Riverside’s Patient Participation Group added, “What Horsham patients want is an enhanced range of health services made available within the local community. It’s clear that this can best be achieved when GP practices work together, so we welcome the decision of the Riverside and Courtyard practices to form a partnership, in the belief that patients from both surgeries will benefit considerably from access to a wider range of services without having to visit hospital.” As a single partnership, the practice teams at Courtyard and Riverside will be uniting to offer additional services and specialist clinics to patients from the surgeries.

Calling all family historians. Was your ancestor born in the workhouse in Steyning or elsewhere in West Sussex, or did they die there? Did they ever fall on hard times? Or perhaps they were an Overseer or Guardian of the Poor? If so, and you want to find out more, go along to a special morning workshop at West Sussex Record Office in Chichester on Wednesday at 10am, which will help both

established and budding family historians to unlock the records of the ‘Poor Laws’. The Poor Laws were first established in 1601 in order to manage the poor. They had a tremendous impact on society until 1946, when they were abolished. In 1834 changes to the laws compelled unions of parishes to build workhouses to deal with the poorest and most wretched families and individuals.

In West Sussex, new union workhouses included those built in Westhampnett, Steyning and East Preston, and the photograph on this page shows staff and inmates preparing for an outing in 1928. During the workshop, archivist Nichola Court will provide an overview of the ‘Poor Laws’ and their impact on society, and then examine the records created as a result of the Poor Laws and outline how these can be used by family historians to further their research. There will also be an opportunity to read and handle some physical documents, and light refreshments will be provided. Tickets cost £7.50 and places are limited. To book your place, call West Sussex Record Office on 01243 753602, or email record.office@westsussex.gov.uk for further information.

A row is brewing over poor funding for schools between Torycontrolled West Sussex Council and the Tory-controlled Government. The Leader of West Sussex County Council has warned of a ‘perfect storm’ of funding pressures and policy changes which will have a damaging effect on local schools and children’s learning. Louise Goldsmith has written to the Secretary of State for Education, Justine Greening, to plead for urgent government support to address issues which have ‘built up over years of under-funding’. The letter has been prompted by delays to the implementation of a new National Funding Formula for schools, something which local head teachers and the County Council have been calling for. Cllr Goldsmith said: “As things stand, central government policy is placing councils like West Sussex in a truly untenable position of presiding over real cuts to school budgets, to the long term detriment of our children and their educational outcomes. “I have written to the Secretary of State to say we urgently need support to resolve a number of funding issues caused by a range of policy changes and made worse by this recent delay.” The County Council is in the process of preparing budget estimates for 2017/18 and beyond. Prior to the current year, the County Council had not increased its Council Tax since 2010/11, saving the average Band D taxpayer £523. During this time the County Council sought to maintain frontline services whilst taking out £162m in savings. Louise added: “Despite our focus on cost efficiency and savings, the budget pressures for 2017/18 mean that in order to continue protecting essential frontline services, we are being forced to consider passing unfunded cost burdens on to our schools. “We have absolutely no capacity to absorb the cuts to the Education Support Grant (up to £5.7m by 2018/19) or new costs such as the Apprenticeship Levy (£1.7m). “

Love is long dance for Beryl and Arthur Devoted Beryl and Arthur

Steyning residents Beryl and Arthur Wilson have celebrated a devoted 65 years of marriage after they met dancing. And they marked the milestone with their good friends at Vintage Years – a group in Steyning that meets on the first Friday of every month. Beryl and Arthur met in 1949 in the Court Ballroom, Balham, when both had just been demobbed. Arthur was 21 and Beryl

22. They courted for two years and then married on September 22 1951 at St Mary’s Church, Balham. Beryl made her wedding dress from an evening dress a friend gave her, added with some lace to help decorate it as coupons were still being used. Vintage Years, laid on a special aprty, and Jan Wise, its chairman, presented Beryl and Arthur with flowers from the club. The club has been running

for three years and meets at the Steyning Centre between 2pm and 4pm. Beryl and Arthur said: “Going to Vintage Years is a good way of meeting different people we always have fun and it’s something to look forward to, their outings are always good and it’s a chance to see and experience new places .’ Their family, consisting of their two children and four grandchildren, celebrated with them on September 24. Age UK Horsham District’s Day Clubs Worker and Chairwoman of Vintage Years, Jan Wise, provides support to a number of groups for older people within the Chanctonbury area, ensuring that they are sustainable and have the resources they need. Mums like Erika hope for breakthrough Mum Erika Cullen is hoping work by Horsham-based Action Medical Research will help her understand better the needs of her brain-injured teenage daughter. The charity is helping fund two studies to help children who have suffered a serious brain injury, with researchers taking widely differing approaches to try to help. Erika’s daughter Kira Middleton, 16, suffered a severe head injury aged two in a car accident , and believes these studies are hugely important. Erika said: “Kira is 16 now, but in many ways she’s still a little girl. She’s got the same happy personality she had before her head injury. Thankfully, she has no real understanding of what has happened to her.” She now uses a wheelchair, requires help with personal care and can only use the left side of her body. At 16, Kira is well physically but, her mother says, very vulnerable: “She has no sense of fear or danger and, if anything happened, she does not have the vocabulary to explain. She needs supervision at all times.” Research like the two studies supported by Action Medical Research is, Erika feels, very much needed: “The brain is so complex. There definitely needs to be more research into how different parts of the brain are used, and whether memory can be improved to help children in their everyday life.” “I would love to know more about what Kira is able to understand and whether she thinks ahead,” Erika, who lives in West Sussex, added: “More detailed brain scans have the potential to really help other children who, like Kira, have suffered a serious

head injury.” In one study Professor David Sharp of Imperial College London is developing sophisticated new brain scans to enable more accurate diagnosis of children’s problems after brain injuries. The £199,814 study has been funded by Action Medical Research in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital Chil-

dren’s Charity. In the other study working across the University of Exeter, the University of East Anglia and the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, with Action Medical Research funding of £130,818, Dr Anna Adlam and her team are evaluating whether a computerised memorytraining programme can help children aged 8-16 who have survived a brain injury.

School application deadlines loom Parents have until the end of this month to request which secondary school they want children to attend. Parents need to apply for a secondary place by the deadline of Monday 31 October 2016. They are encouraged to apply online at www.westsussex.gov. uk/admissions and should list their three preferred schools. Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “The online process is quick and simple and you will receive an automatic email acknowledgement so you’ll know your application has been received. “If you do not have access to the internet, you can still apply online using a computer in your local library for free.” The council says some top tips to remember when applying are: • You can apply for up to three different schools. You must rank the schools in order of preference. The first school should be the one you would most like your child to go to. • You are advised to use all three preferences and enter your catchment school as one of your preferences (you can find out which catchment area you are in at www.westsus-

The food of India

sex.gov.uk/admissions). If you want your child to be considered for a place at their catchment school you must include this as one of your three preferences. • If you apply after the deadline (Monday 31 October 2016) you are far less likely to get a place at one of your preferred schools. If you are unable to apply online you can request a form by phoning 033 301 42903. The form should then be posted by recorded delivery so that it arrives before the application deadline. Mrs Field added: “We will try to meet parental preferences wherever possible. To help us to do this it is very important that applications are submitted on time and filled in correctly. “Please remember it is the responsibility of parents or carers to apply for a school place. You do not need to have a letter from the County Council.” Parents of younger children will be able to apply for places at primary, infant and junior schools from Monday 3 October 2016. Royal treat for steam fans “Lizzie”

Photo by Mark Walker Steam train fans are take a trip from Horsham to the city of Gloucester next week. They will be aboard the Cathedrals Express on Wednesday when the train starts from Horsham at about 7.30 am and will be dieselhauled as far as London. There the magnificent 6201 Princess Elizabeth steam locomotive, fresh from its three-year refurbishment will join the train. ‘Lizzie’, named in 1933 after the young princess who became Queen Elizabeth 2 , will then head out across the Thames Valley and through the picturesque, rolling hills of The Cotswolds, before arriving in Gloucester early afternoon. There will be nearly three hours to explore all the city has to offer,

including Gloucester Cathedral, where Harry Potter fans will be able to experience at first hand, where many of the famous scenes were filmed. Also worth a visit are the restored 200-year old historic docks and the charming Beatrix Potter themed ‘Tailor of Gloucester’ museum and shop. Passengers will re-join the train at 16:15 for the return journey which will get into Horsham at around 22:30. Earlier this year ‘Lizzie’ was set to make her comeback, however the extensive refurbishment process took longer than expected, as Chairman of Steam Dreams, Marcus Robertson explains “We were due to run this trip with Lizzie earlier in the summer, but

unfortunately we had to postpone it as the engine wasn’t quite ready, so we are thrilled that this major restoration project is now complete and we are, at last, able to run our trip to Gloucester as planned.” He added; “Lizzie last visited Gloucester in July 2012 as part of the Royal Jubilee Tour, hauling the Royal Train carrying Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Phillip, so it seems rather fitting that in The Queen’s 90th year, we are making a return visit here with this impressive engine.” Anyone interested in travelling on The Cathedrals Express should call the booking office on 01483 209888 or visit visit www.CathedralsExpress.co.uk.

Sunday service considered A bus company is considering a trial of a Sunday service in the run up to Christmas. Shipley-based Sussex buses responded to a story in the District Post about calls for an improved service for Broadbridge Heath. Spokeswoman Lyndi Reading told the Post: “I read with interest your article regarding bus services connecting Broadbridge Heath and Horsham. “From March of this year we launched a 30 minute ,with minor exceptions, frequency service operating through Broadbridge Heath and Wickhurst Green into Horsham, Bus 68. This operates Monday to Saturday, running from 6.30am to 6.32pm. “This was a substantial improvement of service than was previously available at the

village. “On commencement of the service we received a great deal of feedback, the largest area of requests was for weekday service extensions to connect with commuter trains; in response to this feedback we have extended the weekday service with effect from October 1 to include an earlier 0602 journey operating through to 1932. We are just about to launch this new timetable. “We are considering a trial of the 68 service on a Sunday in the weeks leading up to Christmas. “Routes and feedback are consistently monitored and if we believed there was sufficient demand for an evening service this is something we may consider for the future.”

Fun and murder for a good cause Supporters of the Motor Neurone Disease Association are joining forces with a Sussex amateur dramatic group to stage an innovative evening of fun and murder mystery. Money raised from the event run by the charity’s West Sussex North branch at the Greenway Academy, Horsham , will go towards improving care for those living with the progressive, terminal neurological disease in the area. The play takes place at the Greenway Academy, Greenway, Horsham, RH12 2JS on October 15 at 7:30 pm.Tickets are £12.50, in-

cluding a fish and chip supper. For tickets please email Sue Sheppard on suee.sheppard@ tesco.net. GROPE, the Goring Regional Occasional Players Ensemble, will perform a play in which an ageing 70s band, the St Cleve City Rockers, perform yet another tour to try to keep the golden memories alive and the bank balances solvent. However, behind the exuberant performances a tangled web of illicit relationships, dubious financial deals and fading talent threaten to bring the curtain crashing down for the last time. Commenting on the new inclusive sports activities, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “With the Rio Paralympics now well under way and increased focus on provision of sports that are inclusive to all, I’m delighted that our Sports and Development team are adding these new inclusive sports sessions to the already broad programme of inclusive activities that are on offer in order to accommodate local demand. “These are all inclusive clubs and activities which will provide quality coaching to develop disabled people’s skills in vital areas which will improve their overall health and wellbeing and I would urge as many of you as possible to join in and benefit from the opportunities on offer.”

Hunt after armed robbery in Horsham An armed youth robbed a man in Horsham. Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which left the victim badly shaken. The 21-year-old victim had finished work and was walking home at about 1.15am on Friday of last week when he was approached from behind by someone in an alleyway by the train station car park. He was tripped up and fell to the floor before the suspect produced something shiny from his pocket which was believed to be either a knife or screwdriver. The victim was told to hand over his phone, which he did.

The suspect then ran off. He has been described as white, around 5’10” and of slim build. He looked young, about 15-years-old and was wearing a black “hoodie” and black tracksuit bottoms. Detective Constable James Gwynne said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the victim who has understandably been left shaken. “We would like to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw something suspicious.” Witnesses can email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting reference 58 of 23/09.

Police escort for Horsham school in London The school’s band leads parade

Hundreds of senior pupils from Christ’s Hospital school along with the choir and the band were escorted by police through the City of London district to the beat of the band for their annual St Matthew’s Day ceremony and church service. The Bishop of Horsham, the Rt Rev Mark Sowerby conducted the service this year at the Church of St Andrew. Escorted by the City Police, the 400 pupils wearing their distinctive Tudor uniform marched proudly through the streets to the surprise of many onlookers. It was also a poignant moment for Old Blues who came along to support the parade, particularly those who

left the School in the summer. After the service, the pupils marched to the Guildhall where they each received ‘largesse’, a coin fresh from the Royal Mint, presented to them by the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman the Lord Mountevans and the Lady Mayoress, Lady Mountevans. Christ’s Hospital, founded in 1552 by Edward VI, was established through the generosity of the Lord Mayor of the day and City benefactors as a charitable school. It remained in the City for 350 years before moving to Horsham in 1902. The blue uniform dating back to the mid-16th century is the mark of a charity school, blue being the cheapest dye available

for clothing at that time. Christ’s Hospital is the only school to wear the uniform both on ceremonial occasions and daily during lessons. Traditionally St. Matthew’s Day was the day on which the Governors of Christ’s Hospital School were elected. They would meet in the School’s Great Hall, and then process, carrying their wands, to Christ Church, Newgate Street, for a service. Today, St Matthew’s Day is the day on which the School thanks their Governors and the City for their generosity and continued support. This ceremony is one of the highlights of the School’s calendar.

People will pay for some nonhousehold items at civic tips from Saturday. The changes are set to come into force to West Sussex’s 11 Household Waste Recycling Sites from October 1. For the first time people will pay disposal charges for non-household items such as soil, hard-core, plasterboard and tyres. But there will be no charges for green waste, which includes grass cuttings. Non-household waste will be charged at £4 per rubble bag or part bag, or per item or per sheet of plasterboard. Rubble bags (55cm x 85cm) can be bought from DIY stores. However, for a limited period, one free rubble bag will be available upon request for each resident at HWRSs. The disposal of all other household waste and recycling materials will remain free of charge. Payment can only be made by Visa or Mastercard debit and credit cards and will need to be made before accessing the chargeable containers. Cash and cheques cannot be accepted. David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “With increased demand for other essential services coupled with reduced government funding, as a Council we needed

to live within our means, and make savings. “These changes will help us to make those critical savings, while still maintaining a comprehensive service for residents.” The decision was taken after considering responses from residents in a public consultation, and comments from Parish, District and Borough Councils. David added: “This was a decision taken very carefully after considering the views of residents. “I considered all of the possible options available, and decided that as we did not want to shut sites and also to keep sites open at weekends this was the most realistic option to take.” For more information on the changes and a full list of chargeable items visit: www. recyclingforwestsussex.org/ changes.

Views sought on busy country park Van fire alert in Roffey Visitors to Southwater Country Park are being asked how it might be improved, although it attracted a particularly high number of visitors this summer. Good weather brought out crowds but created some parking problems, which Horsham District Council is looking at to see if they can eased. Meanwhile it wants people to let them have their ideas about improving the park. In a review of the summer the council says the good weather over the summer holidays has meant that the beach areas, café, the award winning Dinosaur Island Adventure Play Area and the car parks were packed out on a daily basis, with many people returning. It says many positive comments about the country park have appeared on social media including the world’s largest travel review site, TripAdvisor and ‘Dinosaur Island’ has become a popular summer holiday attraction for visitors from the district and beyond. The water sports and café facili-

ties proved extremely popular, and the barbecue areas by the beach have had people queuing up to use them in our recent warm summer evenings. The council is now reviewing the season, and looking for ways

I am delighted that so many of our residents and visitors have enjoyed Southwater Country Park this year that it can improve our visitors’ and local residents’ experience of the park, minimising local inconvenience. The review said of the parking problems: “The council is aware that there have been occasions when problems have been caused by people parking inconsiderately, and is working with stakeholders to find ways how this can be improved. “

Popular Dinosaur Park before opening

The council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am delighted that so many of our residents and visitors have enjoyed Southwater Country Park this year and am particularly pleased that so many people have kept coming back to enjoy the benefits of this unique experience. There is so much on offer and best of all, it’s extremely good value for money. “As a council we are keen to improve upon the attractions available and the overall experience at the country park and would urge you to please share your views with us so we can make the experience even better for users and local residents.” If you have any ideas how Southwater Country Park can be improved, please email us at parks@horsham.gov.uk

Shoppers and town centre workers saw two men on an upper level at Copnall Way car park at about 5pm on Monday. One of the men was seen holding a bottle of wine. Almost immediately after police were called called, at 5.06 pm, one of the men, a 28-year old from Worthing, was seen to fall two storeys to the ground.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries which were not initially assessed as life threatening. A paste from the past as Shippam’s history recalled Do you remember those little pots of Shippam’s fish and meat paste that were a teatime staple for many years? At their heyday in the 1950s the number of jars sold by the Chichester family firm virtually doubled from 22 to 43million; almost every household in the country enjoyed Shippam’s paste for their tea. Started by butcher Shipston Shippam in 1750, Shippam’s remained an independent family firm until the 1970s. Although now part of Prince’s, Shippam’s Pastes are still produced in Chichester and the former factory’s distinctive façade

and famous clock and wishbone can still be seen in East Street. You can learn much more about the fascinating history of this famous firm at a talk in October called ‘The Story of Shippam’s’ given by archivist Nichola Court from West Sussex Record Office on 25 October at 7pm. Muddy Wild Cats run amok for Horsham Rugby Club Horsham is expanding rapidly and as the town grows, so does Horsham Rugby Club. The ‘Horsham Rugby Dream’ is to build a new two storey clubhouse with changing facilities underneath and social space above providing sheltered views over the first team pitch. If funding can be raised and planning permission secured then, with the support of local businesses, the dream could become a reality! Horsham Rugby Club are experiencing success on the field in the mini, junior and senior sections and the dream is to provide the players and visitors with facilities that match that success. While a significant amount of funding has already been raised, substantial extra finances are still required, so club members are coming up with ingenious ways of collecting more money. The improvements at the club will be available to the whole of the sporting community in Horsham and surrounds – not just for rugby, but other sports, too – encouraging and supporting wider and more inclusive participation. The club is looking to build something not just for the rugby club but a facility for the whole town, somewhere that will be available for weddings, parties, functions, meetings and more. The location

is special and the club wants to become an even greater part of the community. Achievement of a new clubhouse would let the whole of Horsham share in the club’s success. To kick off their fundraising efforts, last week, the Wild Cats (the Under 8’s side) chose a 2.5K Child’s Mud Run in Dorking as the first of their organised sponsored events. This included

The kids really threw themselves into the run – literally! It was fantastic to see them raising so much money with such enthusiasm! wading through water, jumping walls, climbing down ropes along a 2.5km trail with tyre crawls and a few more surprises on the way, ensuring that the enthusiastic young fundraisers got joyously wet and muddy. It was a great family event with players, parents and friends all participating. The Wild Cats were set a £1,800 target by their coach, Rob Plinston. He promised them, that should they reach this target, he would run as Banana Man! And, after an amazing effort involving much begging and pleading the Wild Cats managed to raise

Ha u n t e d

an amazing £3310. Rob told the District Post: “It was an amazing day, and I am very proud of them all. To think that fourteen 7 year old children could raise that amount for the club is incredible. The generosity of people is very humbling. I am not entirely sure whether many of them remember Eric Wimp the Banana Man but I had a lovely time!” Wild Cats Team Manager Kerrie Weller added: “The kids really threw themselves into the run – literally! It was fantastic to see them raising so much money with such enthusiasm!” Rob continued: “As a club we’ve managed to secure £430,000 and most of that has been down to the hard work of individuals like Chris Wright, Bob Essex and Richard Ordidge. We want to raise a further £770,000 which will enable us to build our ultimate dream - The Two Storey Clubhouse – so we are all working as hard as we possibly can to achieve that. Every penny that we raise will go back into the club to provide the best facilities for the Horsham community. The more money we are able to raise the better facilities we will be able to provide!” Horsham Rugby Club will be delighted to hear from any local companies or individuals interested in contributing towards or sponsoring the new clubhouse scheme via richard.ordidge@ outlook.com

Child readers go for “Gruffalo card” Warm thanks to volunteers Sam Ismail with card

Young readers can now get their own “Gruffalo” membership cards from libraries in Horsham district and the rest of West Sussex. Libraries in West Sussex have launched a new membership card for their younger customers featuring one of the nation’s favourite picture book character,

The free service in libraries across West Sussex is great for families , books for babies and for children of all ages, books for parents and carers, and of course the wonderful rhyme times for under-fives. I urge everyone to visit their local library to find out what they have to offer.” David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Residents Services said: “Earlier this year the County Council’s Registration Services began offering parents the chance to collect a library card for their new baby during their birth registration appointment. This has proved extremely popular and has seen library membership for babies in West Sussex more than double since the initiative started!” All libraries in West Sussex have a wide range of books for children and young people, right from birth to teenage years. Councillors, volunteers and wardens

Volunteers were thanked for their work in maintaining country parks, woodlands and green spaces at a barbecue. Wardens became chefs when Horsham District Council and Horsham in Bloom hosted the session at Chesworth Farm near Horsham. Last year more than 350 different conservation volunteers put in over 19,000 hours of volunteer effort in maintaining and improving the council’s green spaces. This has meant that important nature conservation works have been

able to take place on Parks and Countryside sites throughout the district that otherwise the council would not be able to deliver. Photographed are Cllr Christine Costin, Chairman of Horsham in Bloom Sue Brundish, Chairman of Horsham District Council Cllr Christian Mitchell and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen with Horsham District Council wardens. Cllr Chowen formally thanked all the volunteers for their dedication, commitment and hard work over the past year.

West Grinstead Ploughing match Wine notes: Don’t forget the white Riojas It’s a fair bet that when most people think of Riojas they mean the attractive red wines from Spain that combine so well with rich foods, including red meats. But there is another side to Iberia and it is the white wines, which are distinctive and delicious with chicken and seafoods. What makes the wines so different is the use of perhaps lesser known grapes, so there is no Chardonnay, Chenic Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc in sight. Instead the Malvasia and Viura grapes have dominated production, although the latter is by far the most popular nowadays. Blends of the two can have about 95 per cent Viura. Rioja enjoys an excellent climate for wine making as it is sheltered by mountains from

the Atlantic winds that bring a good dollop of rain to other areas. In general , you get what you pay for with white Riojas. Too many of the cheaper versions are bland , but the better examples can be aromatic and elegant, with a subtle use of oak maturation. £10 will buy an elegant and refreshing Monopole Blanco 2015 (wine Rack and others), while the 100 per cent Viura Vina Real Barrel Fermented Blanco 2014 at £11.10 is richer and creamier through its oaking. Cune Barrel Fermented Blanco at £9.80 (Waitrose and others) is great with fish. If you want to taste an example of the best white Rioja can do wait for a special occasion and lob out £25.45 for the smooth and mouth watering Contino Balnco 2014 (Waitrose and others). PJD

Photos by Sam Owen Around two thousand happy people attended the annual West Grinstead & District Ploughing & Agricultural Society match and show at Aglands Farm Cowfold. Five large fields were being ploughed by various means, but there was far more to the day than ploughing alone, the event resembling a miniature version of the South of England Show. In the main ring there was a cattle show with, among many other breeds, Greyfriars Dexters from Storrington catching the eye. Black Welsh mountain sheep and horned Portlands from Shipley also stood out amid shearing displays. Strikingly marked ferrets impersonated meerkats before racing down tubes and there was terrier racing, too and gun dog demonstrations, the parade of hounds a tug of war and a welding competition – all surrounded by fair ground activities, food stalls, stick making and an enormous collection of traditional and state of the art agricultural machinery of all shapes and sizes. Steyning Young Farmers Club were running a skittle alley and Central Sussex Beekeepers were showcasing their products next to a stall selling beautiful country prints. Elsewhere vintage wooden handled tools were on offer near the East Clayton donkeys. Lunches and local beers were popular in the barn and there was a meet the farmer education area alongside vegetable and fruit judging and a produce stall with all proceeds going to Chestnut Tree Hospice, who also benefited from the busy tractor and trailer rides around the large farm, where the expertly scrutinised ploughing was taking place across five expansive fields. While traditional hedge laying was in full swing on the bottom field, the ploughing

encapsulated a wide variety of methods from a battery of delightful little grey Fergie tractors and Fordsons, dating from the 1940s, on to giant modern machines. There were tractors with caterpillar tracks and spiked metal wheels and beautifully decorated working horses. Not far from an enormous chain and belt driven threshing and binding machine sorting the wheat from the chaff was, for many, the star exhibit of the show – a hooting traction engine working in tandem with a gigantic steam ploughing machine. Between them the pair pulled a contraption with a man steering aloft, with two colleagues acting as ballast below, as it ploughed up and down the sloping field. The ploughing machine, now converted to diesel, first worked in 1918 when it cultivated 16 and a half acres at 18 shillings (90 pence) per acre. This was a long day for the organisers with machinery arriving early in the morning, Society

President Sarah Peay saying: “We were established in 1871 and this is a great event because it gives people from the town a rare opportunity to experience country life as it used to be. The show is held on a different farm each year, providing different challenges and different views – next year we’ll be at Westons Farm Itchingfield, on September 16.” The enjoyment of visitors was clear to see, Hugh Waller from Horsham saying: “This was an absolutely wonderful day – a total privilege to see the shire horses right through to modern tractors plotting man’s use of the land down the ages.” Dick Ruck and his wife Fidge were also in their element, Dick telling the District Post: “I was weaned on shows like this on my uncle’s farm in Somerset – it’s a great day out – fresh air, livestock, excellent food outlets and cider. Unbeatable!” Proceeds from the show fund a bursary helping local agricultural workers to develop their farming careers.

Public Exhibition Britaniacrest Recycling Ltd will be submitting a planning application this winter to develop a Recycling Recovery and Renewable Energy Facility (3Rs) at the site of the former

Wealden Brickworks, off Langhurstwood Road, RH12 4QD. Whilst there has been substantial investment in waste processing facilities across the country, few are available to businesses to ensure that their waste is properly treated to avoid landfill. There is a real shortage of such facilities, especially as there is over twice as much business waste as household waste. This facility will safely process waste and materials, such as metals, plastics and rubble, which will be sorted and segregated to recover their value for onward recycling using the latest sorting technology. The residual material will be used to produce energy using well established and proven thermal treatment technology. Electricity will be exported to the grid, enough to power over 42,000 homes. All these activities will provide a sustainable alternative to primary materials and fossil fuels. Britaniacrest Recycling will be holding a public exhibition for local people to find out more and express their views on the plans proposed for the site. The exhibition will be held at Roffey Millennium Hall, Crawley Road, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 4DT on:

Friday 7th October from 5pm – 7 pm Saturday 8th October from 10am – 1pm Staff will be on hand at all times to welcome residents and answer any questions. How Robust are your Profits? This month our Award Winning business expert and author Janette Whitney gives advice on maintaining your profits

janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

You have probably heard the saying –“Turnover is vanity, Profit is sanity” and this is especially true in the current economic climate when businesses need to protect their profitability. So just how do companies remain profitable during these hard times? •First, ensure that the information you have about your business is accurate and timely so it can be shared with the whole of the business. •Use this information to focus the minds of everyone in your business to sell more units and increase the profit of each unit. For example, you need to know the number of units sold each month, the average price per unit sold, and the average cost of producing each unit. The same applies if you sell a service – calculate the number of hours of your time you have sold, at what price and at what cost. •Once you are fully aware of the cost per unit, you can explore reducing your costs and improvements in efficiency. •Use the same data to monitor and measure the changes you make. Understanding the profitability of each product or service sold will enable you to focus on selling the more profitable lines. •Examine & justify all the costs in the business. Ensure as much as possible (and reasonable) is passed on to your customer and reduce unnecessary costs such as scaling

back on those liquid lunches or walking instead of getting a taxi. •If a large proportion of your business’ costs are fixed, and therefore cannot be reduced, then the answer may be simply to sell more. Fixed costs won’t increase with increased production, so the cost per product will be reduced and profits will rise. There can however be a trade-off if you have to reduce prices to increase sales. Everyone in your business can contribute to improving profitability, so make sure the data is easy to understand and share. A few simple graphs on the wall that compare volume sold, price and cost to some challenging but achievable targets will help significantly. If you need to drive up your profits then contact me on 01403 733671 or visit www.whitneyassocs.co.uk for more information. A big thank you from Beeches Beeches Buffet

Piries Place Christmas party

Lynn & Sue

Gordon

Business Martin Read Beeches Gifts in Piries Place was opened by Gordon Roach as a gift shop in 1996 and the business was successfully developed and has evolved over the 20 years of trading. Sadly the long standing, compassionate enterprise will be closing the doors on 17th November because of the redevelopment of the Piries Place shopping centre. Beeches have very much appreciated the loyalty of their excellent regular customers down the years and take the opportunity to thank them and invite them and new friends to visit the shop for the final flurry, the closing down sale. Candles were one of the first products to be stocked, swiftly followed by Ty Beanie Babies, many of which were auctioned for charities, making a major contribution towards the birthing pool at the Princess Royal Hospital at Haywards Heath. Celebrity autographed beanies, including one signed by Prince Albert of Monaco, were especially popular raising further funding for charity And, the formation of Beeches collectors’ club with over 5,000 members saw items despatched to many far away places. Charity raffles followed throughout the years – helping a wide range of good causes, including Barnado’s, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Help for Heroes and local organisations. Value for money and diversification have always been the watch words of Beeches, keeping pace with market innovations, including the Pokemon range, and, pioneering for Horsham at the time, Croc shoes. All new product trends were catered for and Gordon had a full role in local business life as Vice Chairman of Horsham Traders’ Guild. Christmas events were relished in Piries Place with Gordon entering into the spirit of the occasion assisting Santa with

his duties! Friends, family, staff, customers and other tenants generously gave their time and effort for the Christmas lights switch on, supporting with this event The Sands Charity. Following two consecutive years of exhibiting at the Ideal Home Show, Earls Court, came the introduction of baskets, plants, garden ornaments, and yet more basketware! The Macmillan

Charity benefited from the cake stall before rugs and further gifts were added to Beeches’ extensive range. Mouth watering refreshments will continue to be available in Beeches Café in East Street but, sadly, everything must go at the Beeches Piries Place shop ahead of the November 17 closure, so go to pick up a bargain while stocks last!

martin read

Reporter

The Featherstone Jazzmen played a rousing number as Horsham’s 29 year old Max Dumbrell romped home in near perfect conditions in one hour 13 minutes and 32 seconds to win this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon. After leading the 1001 runners all the way – many local, but some from far and wide - Max told the District Post: “I was second last year, so it was great to win today at this nice local event.” Worthing & District Harriers’ Emma MacReady was first lady home in 1.21.20, saying: “I really enjoyed that because I’ve only just stepped up from 3000K steeple chases and it was good training for the Valencia full marathon

that I’m doing in November!” Runners in fancy dress included Sam Boylett aka Jack Sparrow, Susie Milbank from Broadbridge Heath with a new, futuristic take on Victoria dress, complete with a bustle and Emma Berrill hidden behind two globes in a Star Wars tribute. Susie told us: “It was hot going round in costume, but it was great to finish. I’ve only just taken up running!” Susie raised over £250 for St Catherine’s Hospice, this year’s nominated charity. All agreed that the atmosphere with a steel band and pop music en route and entertainment and food stalls at the start and finish was unbeatable, Jason Summerfield from Billingshurst said: “I ran last year after a 31 year gap and hoped to do a personal best this time. I was going well at half way but its so hilly and I finished slightly slower, but I made it!” Brothers David and Scott An-

nandale finished together. For David, from Horsham Joggers it was his first marathon but Scott, who came down from Scotland to compete, had the Dundee race under his belt. Both found the going tough but came through unscathed praising the “exceptionally well run event.” And, this year, for the first time, there was also a 10K race, with 380 starters, won by Horsham Joggers’ star Neil Boniface in 31.33. Neil said: “I’m heading for the British Championships in Cardiff - that’s an international qualifier, so 10K was just the right length to prepare me for that.” Elspeth Turner from Horsham’s Blue Star Harriers was first for the ladies in 39.34, telling us: “This was part of my training for the forthcoming full marathon in Amsterdam.” Race day at Barns Green epitomises the spirit of the village with everyone getting behind the event

– filling goody bags, providing over 150 marshalls, stewarding the car parks, registering runners and in many other ways. Race Director Vernon Jennings said: “I’m really proud of what we’re achieving and can’t emphasise enough how the whole village supports it and it’s great that we can give donations to the local organisations helping us. We are delighted that John Franklin, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital School, started the half marathon and thank him for allowing us to route it through the school grounds and, this year, the 10K race around the playing fields.” Vernon and his family certainly lead by example, his wife Ann edits the excellent programme while other members are involved in various capacities. Vernon added: “We’ll soon be planning next year’s races – make a note in your diary: September 24 2017, it’ll be in aid of another worthy cause.”

Horsham Folk Club welcomes one of Canada’s most revered performers Horsham Folk Club will be welcoming a Scottish export, in the person of David Francey, on Sunday (October 2). David, a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turnedsongwriter, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star), will be accompanied by James McKie on guitar. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, to parents who were factory workers, David moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades, he worked across Canada in rail yards, construction sites, and in the Yukon bush, all the while writing poetry, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a documentarian of the working person, who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album, Torn Screen Door, came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then, he has released eleven albums, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan and

Tracy Grammer. Performance: October 2 at 8pm, Horsham Folk Club, Normandy Centre, Denne Road, Horsham, RH12 1JP. Tickets: £8 (Members £5), under 21s and students free; available on the door from 7.45pm. Information: 01403 276273

Live At The Apollo Star Andrew Lawrence at The Capitol Horsham A brand new touring show from the star of Live At The Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow begins at The Capitol Theatre next month. Considered “Superbly intelligent, highly articulate and deeply sour” by The Spectator, the UK comedy scene’s most bigoted scumbag, is back with an all new show of morally repugnant, borderline criminal material in the very poorest taste. No laugh is too cheap. So bring a friend, who’s easily offended, and be sure to take everything at face value. Performance: October 13, 8pm, at The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets available online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or by calling the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 ‘With every passing minute of his set, ‘Uncensored’, you marvel at his chutzpah and worry that he has a death-wish; will he make it to September? ‘SPEAKING your mind used to be the norm for stand-up comedians, it was part of the attraction of the job and along with the desire to make people laugh, claims Lawrence, it’s why he got into the business in the first place. And on this form, thank goodness he did.’ Edinburgh Evening News ‘It is the last third of this show which stays with you. It is quite extraordinary and everyone should see it. He talks about the “toxic” industry he is in. The show is called Reasons to Kill Yourself and that is, in a way, what he does here, comedically speaking. It is powerful, sad, angry, true stuff.’ Scotsman Double Edinburgh

Grand Opening of Abingworth Meadows this weekend! The landmark development of Abingworth Meadows in Thakeham opens the doors of its show home for the sales launch this weekend, Saturday 1st October,

at 11am. The interior furnishings and finish of this exceptional family home displays the creativity of professional interior designers,

Phoenix Interior Design, at their finest. Oakford Homes’ latest show home enables prospective buyers to view these prestigious four and five bedroom detached homes, the first phase of which directly overlooks the newly created cricket pitch at Abingworth Meadows. The four bedroom show house displays the luxury design and specification for which Oakford Homes has gained a reputation, complemented by a decor colour palette of blueberries and cream with contemporary grey accents. “A lovely, light outdoor theme was behind our initial inspiration given all the new sports facilities underway at Abingworth Meadows and the fabulous country walks around the area,” explains Susan White, award winning principal designer and managing director at Phoenix Interior Design. “Designed for family life, there’s a feel of ‘White Company’ meets ‘Homes and Gardens’ which works incredibly well here. The proportions of the house are very elegant which has even

allowed us to include a chaise at the end of the bed in the guest suite.” Susan is proud of their latest interior design but admits to a few favourite touches: “If I had to choose, my favourite items would be the Perspex console and lamp table in the living room - these new products only launched this year - and the furniture in the fourth bedroom which we sourced from France.” The first phase of homes at Abingworth Meadows, just off the Storrington Road in Thakeham, comprises 39 four and five bedroom family houses alongside the many new facilities which Oakford Homes are creating for the village including sports pitches, a village hall, local shop and pre-school. Following this Saturday’s launch at 11am, the marketing suite will be open daily from 10am to 5pm with guide prices from £695,000. For further information please contact the appointed selling agents, Fowlers (01903 745844) or Savills (01483 796800) or visit

The Ryder Cup Comes to Horsham! Golf Martin Read - Sports reporter Rumour has it that the Ryder Cup is about to be played at the Hazeltine National Golf Cub in Minnesota. Forget about that – the real deal is at Horsham Cricket Club. Over this Ryder Cup weekend there will be a mega, gold medal tournament at Cricketfield Road on the soon to be famous pop up course, already christened as England’s

answer to Augusta. So, whatever your age and golfing prowess, just come along with a putter and ball to revel in the St Andrew’s atmosphere for a mere £1 a round over the world’s quirkiest championship 9 hole course – winner takes all. Have a practice round on Friday to prepare for the Horsham Open on Saturday and the West Sussex Ryder Cup on Sunday, tackling the innovative course with the final hole ending right in front of the packed clubhouse

terrace for a grandstand finish. Organiser Chris (Shaka) Shambrook, the club’s new Bar and Catering Manager, tells the District Post: “I’ve arranged a couple of these events before when everybody entered into the spirit of it – we’ll have the golf and football on our big screen TV and food available on Sunday, so come on down to join in the fun – it’ll be a great weekend and you could be the next Rory McIlroy!”

Depleted Horsham defeated in cup thriller Horsham coach Dom Mal

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Our priority is to establish ourselves in our new elevated league and it was heartening that we demonstrated good fighting spirit and the ability to score goals

After leading 2 nil, Horsham were edged out of a nine goal thriller despite piling on the pressure in a do or die effort to win their first ever game in the senior cup. Team Manager Al Campbell told the District Post: “There were penalties at both ends and a bandstand finish – this was a proper cup tie, a cracking game that taught us plenty!” Injuries and the need to bolster the second team depleted Horsham

higher level and had impressive debuts. Woolley had a dream start, converting two short cor-

ners in the opening minutes of the game and Gill patrolled the back calmly. Horsham continued to put the Hawks under pressure but two soft goals emphasised the need for 100% concentration against the competitive teams that Horsham will now face following their league promotion. Parity at the break suddenly swung the rampant Hawks’ way with two more goals and a penalty almost saved by Horsham’s new Captain Andy Isaacs - giving Hawks a 5-2 advantage. With attack the only option Campbell brought on a fourth forward and the substitution heralded a great Horsham fight back. First player coach Dom Male deflected into the Hawks net before slotting home a penalty. But, with Hawks on the ropes, they were saved by the whistle, Campbell continuing: “That was an excellent, meaningful workout. Our priority is to establish ourselves in our new elevated league and it was heartening that we demonstrated good fighting spirit and the ability to score goals.” Horsham soon play Oxford Hawks in a home league game, meanwhile in their first game in South League Premier Division 1, on Saturday (October 1), Horsham host Bromley & Beckenham at Broadbridge Heath with a 1.30 push back.

Horsham denied well deserved draw South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division 1 Horsham 0 - 2 Maidenhead Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham came away defeated but deserved to share the points. Persistent early pressure resulted in an early Horsham ‘goal’, but after some delay this was disallowed because the initial shot from the short corner was deemed to have been above the level of the back board. Good Horsham build ups kept honours even until bigger and more experienced Bromley went ahead from a 25th minute penalty after a perceived dangerous Horsham manoeuvre. On the balance of play Horsham were unfortunate to be one down at the break and the second half was equally well matched, short

corners being traded as both defences neutralised all attacks, until, right at the death, Maidenhead’s fifth set piece delivered their second goal body below. Horsham’s 16 year old Gee Humphreys fully warranted her Player of the Match award for clearing off the line and instigating several forays, the last of which denied Horsham a draw as the game ran out of steam. Beckoning motherhood and injuries have obliged Horsham to replace half their line-up, Team Manager Jane Denman telling us: “We’ve got some fantastic girls and they’re going to be great but it’s a big step up from girls’ to ladies’ hockey. We played well today and we’ll get better!” Tomorrow (Saturday) the ladies travel to second placed Reading, who have won their two opening games of the season.

Bowls Round Up Hawth BC 42 – 74 Billingshurst BC Billingshurst played their final game of the season with a visit to Hawth BC at Crawley. The visitors got away to good start and when the tea bell rang were 17 shots ahead. Resumption of play saw Billingshurst increase their lead, albeit at a slightly reduced rate, to win by 32 shots. This win gave ‘Hurst their first “3 straight wins in a row” of the season. Top rink for Billingshurst went to June Bennett, Barry Gilbert & Betty Weller, who won by 18 shots. Pippbrook BC 69 – 53 Horsham Park BC In spite of winning on 2 of the 4 rinks, Horsham Park lost their away game against Pippbrook, Dorking, by 16 shots with Pippbrook gaining revenge for their defeat by Park earlier in the season. Park’s top rink went to skip David James who, with Angela Spurr and Vic Pratt, was able to come from 10 down to eventually win by 6 shots, 17 – 11. Captain David Spurr with Robin Peters and Marie Davies had a terrible start and were 10 - 0 down by end 5. Spurr’s team fought back, taking 1 shot on the last bowl of the game to win 16 to 15.

Dorking BC 59 - 98Horsham Park BC Horsham Park enjoyed a good win away at Dorking, winning on 3 rinks, drawing the 4th, and by 39 shots overall. Harry Smith skipped Park’s top rink. Smith with Frank Heath, Angela Spurr and Jim Covey dominated the game, winning by 18 shots, 28 to 10. The rinks skipped by Ian Holmes and David James also won convincingly, Holmes by 28 to 17 and James by 23 to 13. Horsham Park BC 85 – 68 Astolat BC Horsham Park finished the season with a victory over Astolat BC from Stoke Park, Guildford, by 17 shots, 85 to 68. Park won on 1 rink, drew 2 rinks and marginally lost the 4th by 3 shots. Park’s top rink skipped by Harry Smith with Captain David Spurr, Roger Leicester and Kamran Nadim romped away scoring consistently throughout their game to beat their opponents by 20 shots, 28 to 8. After a bad start Skip David Peters’ team recovered to draw 19 shots all. Skip Frank Heath’s game could have gone either way but the game again ended up as another draw, 18 shots all. Skip Ian Holmes’ team narrowly lost by 3 shots, 20 to 23.

Synchronised Swimming Young swimmers are heading for a national contest in December. Their big date comes after members of the BSC Horsham Flamingos Synchronised Swimming Club took part in the South East Regional Recreational Competition at K2 in Crawley where

the eight strong team - who train at the Pavilions in the Park in Horsham - performed their aqua TV-themed routine. They were the only team from Sussex at the K2 and the girls competed against established teams such as Portsmouth, Reading and Rushmoor. The team of Esme Allford,

Issy Venn, Cali Topley Nassar, Andalee Toia, Savannah JacksonBland, Vittoria Chiri, Sophia McInnes and Heather Surley has been training hard with coach Francesca Casagrande and all the hard work has paid off. The girls are now busy preparing for the National Age Groups in December.

A fair point apiece for Hornets and Casuals Josh Pelling tips a shot onto the crossbar

Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 1 – 1 Walton Casuals Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Tony Nwachukwu’s first goal since returning to Horsham from his nightmare injury hit season at Worthing earned the battling Hornets a point. Horsham will be pleased with the draw given their poor display in the first half that lacked any goal threat; much due to the absent Terry Dodd, serving a one match ban for his dismissal at Sittingbourne. Walton Casuals arrived at Gorings Mead on the back of a 7 – 0 thrashing of Molesey in midweek, their fifth win in six this season. It was then with some

surprise that the match started with neither team posing a threat and a full 10 minutes had passed before any sort of attempt at goal came about, Josh Pelling in the Horsham goal blocking Dan Summers attempt. It was Summers again who had the next chance on 20 minutes this time Alex Duncan doing well to get in a challenge to force the Casuals forward to shoot high and wide. Horsham offered little up front but did have a decent penalty appeal turned down by referee Hughes when Nwachukwu went down under challenge from Jordan Cheadle. However, what little goal mouth action there was took place at the other end with Malachi Hudson’s pace and ex Hornet Gabriel Odunaike’s presence both creating a constant threat. It was through Hudson that the opening goal eventu-

Junior Football Round Up Steyning Town U13 6 – 3 Horsham Sparrows U13 Playing away at higher division Steyning Town was always going to be difficult, but it was made even more so when Sparrows went 3 – 0 down within the first 15 minutes. A change of formation led to more stability and Sparrows got back into the match with goals from Hugh and Gusztav. The comeback was halted when Steyning extended their lead before Hugh managed his second but Steyning added another two goals at the end. MoM: Daniel. Horsham Tigers U16 3 – 1 Horsham Sparrows U16

Sparrows played away to Tigers in the cup and went behind in the first half. A stronger second half performance couldn’t salvage the tie despite a late goal by Jack. MoM: Luke Horsham Sparrows U11 Girls Another 3 way game saw the girls in action against East Grinstead and Eastbourne. After losing the first game 3-0, the team bounced back to win the second 5-1 Horsham Sparrows U14 Girls 3 – 0 Southdown FC After a difficult start to the season, Sparrows U14 Girls put in a strong performance against one

ally came when 5 minutes before half time the winger breezed past George Branford and Lee Carney before finding Jack Sammoutis whose shot beat Pelling for a 1-0 advantage to the visitors at the break. Playing against the tightest defence in the division Horsham knew they were up against it in the second half, but they took up the challenge straight from the re-start. Carney’s early header forced ‘keeper Brannon Daly into a smart save then Nwachukwu sprinted away before firing in a shot that again Daly was called upon to stop. Casuals then showed why they are the team in form by very nearly doubling their lead when again Hudson’s pace split the defence allowing a chance firstly for Summers and then for Odunaike. At this stage it looked likely to be the visitors who would increase their lead rather than Horsham draw level but on 68 minutes it was the latter that happened. Branford’s through ball saw Nwachukwu leave Cheadle and Max Fitzgerald in his wake before beating Daly inside the far post from a tight angle, giving the injury hit forward his first goal for nearly 18 months. For the remainder of the match much of the action was played out immediately in front of Horsham ‘keeper Pelling but despite some near misses and heart stopping moments for the home support Horsham saw the match out for a fair point for both sides. of their closest rivals Southdown FC, running out 3-0 winners. A brace from Jess N and a first goal for Sumi S sealed the victory. Broadbridge Heath U13 0 - 6 Chesworth Rovers U13 Chesworth progressed to the second round of the John Laker Cup with a good win over Broadbridge Heath. Heath started well and looked determined to not let league champions Chesworth run away with the match with Rovers needing to defend strongly to keep the score at the break as 0-0. Chesworth turned up the pressure in the second half and Toby Shepheard started the scoring from a Sam Jones cross. Harry Sutton then doubled the lead with a half volley, and 2 minutes later Regan Hiller headed in a Callum Palmer corner. Tom Miller danced through the BBH defence for the fourth before Toby hit his second of the game and Ben Lovelock hit a late sixth for Rovers. Chesworth Rovers U16 17 - 0 Horsham Baptist & Ambassadors U16 Chesworth Rovers moved smoothly into the second round of the Edwin Hill Cup with a comfortable win over Division C opposition, Horsham Baptist & Ambassadors, who to their credit battled hard right to the end. The goals came regularly in both halves of the match, with Michael Murray and Connor Jones contributing four apiece, Benji Collins securing a hat-trick, a brace from Morgan Hayward and single strikes from Tim Bennett, Josh Baker, Jamie Maunder and Aaron Crowley.

Late Andrade goal gives Heath all three points SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 - 0 Eastbourne Town Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC Broadbridge Heath welcomed goalkeeper Michael Chester back for just his third start of the season having picked up injuries in his two other appearances. There was also a welcome return to the starting line-up for Ollie Moore making his first start of the season after fracturing his cheekbone in a pre-season friendly. The visitors were many neutrals tip as eventual champions having finished 2nd last season and they started the game well with good possession. Chester was forced into an early save with his legs to deny the lively Jason Taylor but that proved to be the only worthwhile shot on target in the first half with Heath having just the one effort when Jake Holmes headed a Piers McDermott long throw over the Eastbourne crossbar. The second period continued much the same as the first with both defences very much on top; Eastbourne’s best chance fell to Wes Tate who headed a cross straight at Chester and Heath’s Shaun Findlay came close with a left foot shot from

20 yards. The game swung in Heath’s favour on 70 minutes with the introduction of two fresh strikers off the bench, Tiago Andrade who missed the start due to late arrival at the ground and new signing Dean Wright who joined the club from Horsham YMCA in midweek. Heath were now looking a real threat with the pace of Wright and the trickery of Andrade causing problems to the tiring Eastbourne defence and the

The game swung in Heath’s favour on 70 minutes with the introduction of two fresh strikers off the bench two were involved for the only goal of the game on 85 minutes. A free-kick was floated into the penalty area from the right and fell to Wright on the edge of the box from where the striker rifled a low shot at goal that came off a defender and into the path of Andrade who converted from eight yards. That proved to be enough to win the game and move Heath up to fifth place in the league.

Pulborough go second after hat-trick of wins London 3 South East Aylesford Bulls 21 - 39 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Pulborough’s dream start to the new season continued with another strong win, their third straight triumph from their three fixtures this campaign, including two away victories

– bucking the trend of recent seasons. Boro are now second in the table with 14 points, narrowly shaded by Thanet Wanderers. Tomorrow, Saturday, Boro return home to take on another Kent side, fourth placed Gillingham Anchorians, who were heavily defeated by Haywards Heath in week one, then beat Aylesford before overcoming Sheppey last week.

Horsham pull off palpitating win

Horsham’s Canice Gonzague London 2 South East Horsham 52 - 47 Bromley Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham thrashed Bromley for the first three quarters of this game, at one time leading by 45 points, only to be relieved to

hear the final whistle with the visitors on the rampage and supporters totally bemused. Arun Thompson, Joe Wilde, Giles Barber, Captain Tom Johnson and Joey Walker all scored tries in a first half totally dominated by Horsham to earn a seemingly unbeatable lead at the break. And, Horsham’s position was even better after George Palmer, Canice Gonzague and Will Bell all got over the line early in the second half. Johnson’s boot had been converting well with Wilde also getting over the posts. Nothing could possibly prevent a huge Horsham win - until, unaccountably, after Johnson was sin binned and another sent off they relaxed, allowing Bromley to cut through the defence with alarming regularity. A sudden wave of converted tries gave the visitors an undeserved sniff of victory, the

game ending with Horsham devoid of possession. Entertaining though it was, it was an anxious finish for Horsham, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Good to win, of course, but we were cruising and then we stopped tackling! We must learn to close games down and keep concentrating.” Club Captain Barry Wright added: “We were playing so well and led 52-7 but really lost our heads, making Bromley look far better than they were – it almost felt like a defeat in the end!” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham, currently 6th, travel to Medway, who, so far this season, have had convincing wins against Heathfield & Waldron, Deal & Betteshanger and Hove to top the table with substantially more points scored and fewer conceded than any other team.

Horsham denied by last gasp blow Scott Kirkwood threatens the Cray Wanderers goal

Lee Carney races through to score Horsham’s second

Photo by John Lines Ryman League Division One South Horsham 1 – 1 Walton Casuals Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham led twice but were unable to close the game out, losing

to an opportunist goal in the dying moments of the game. Cray had made the early running, but Liam McDevitt opened up the defence for Scott Kirkwood to nonchalantly slot home his first goal for the Hornets. Then, in the 19th minute, Horsham repeatedly failed to clear a seeming-

ly innocuous Cray attack, culminating in keeper Josh Pelling only being able to parry a low strike for Cray to level on the rebound. Two Cray goal attempts soared over the bar before Tony Nwachukuw threaded through only to shoot straight at the Cray keeper, Matt Whitehead and Alex Duncan doing the same as Cray peppered the trees at the other end, the teams going into the break one apiece. Lee Carney almost restored the Hornet’s lead soon after the resumption but his crashing strike was blocked by the Cray keeper’s legs. A Pelling low dive maintained parity ahead of the Hornets recovering the lead when Carney intercepted a Cray back pass to walk the ball towards the goal and entertain the disappointingly sparse crowd with a prostrate header on the line. Following Horsham substitutions a clearance was fluffed allowing Cray to draw level. Horsham, though, continued to press but Kirkwood’s header had insufficient steam. With a 2-2 draw looking likely and just two minutes of extra time available, the Hornets suffered a crushing blow when the normally reliable Dan Sackman headed the ball onto the boot of Dent whose shot deflected into the top left corner to give Cray the game. Deflated Hornets’ Manager Dom Di Paola told the District Post: “I feel sad for the boys for it to end like that because a draw would have been a fair result, but there are such fine margins at this level.” Horsham, now 14th, have a break before travelling to Potters Bar in the FA Trophy on October 8. The next Hornet’s home game is on Saturday October 15 against Whyteleafe.

Another midweek trip to Pagham ends in defeat for Heath SCFL Premier Division Pagham 2 – 1 Broadbridge Heath

Football Andy Crisp - BBHFC For the third year running Heath had to travel to Pagham for a midweek game, far from ideal with so many players not able to get there in time and this game was no exception. Not for the first time this season Heath Manager Steve Painter was forced to make changes to his back four bringing in Jamie Robinson, Marlon Maxwell and moving Jamal Sultan to fullback. It was an error by Sultan in the 5th minute that led to the opening goal when the Heath player was robbed of possession. The ball was then played into the path of Scott Murfin who blasted a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection and looped over keeper Michael Chester into the net. Heath fought back and deservedly levelled 10 minutes later when Jake Holmes dribbled his way around the Pagham defence before slotting a right foot shot wide of keeper James Binfield. Tiago Andrade forced Binfield to make a brilliant save and Ollie Moore headed just wide of the post but somehow the score remained

level at the break. Pagham were far livelier in the second half and Dan Kempson twice tested Chester as they attempted to go ahead again. Just after the hour, and after good work by Murfin on the right, the tricky forward crossed the ball to Kieron Pamment who drilled a low shot past Chester from 18 yards. Chester again denied Murfin 15 minutes later blocking a goal bound effort with

A double-substitution gave Heath some hope with Dean Wright and Jack McNab both coming close his legs. A double-substitution gave Heath some hope with Dean Wright and Jack McNab both coming close and with just minutes remaining Jamie Robinson cut in from the left and hit a right foot shot that Binfield saved brilliantly from the top corner of the goal to deny Heath an equaliser.

Dreams of Wembley still alive for YM F.A. Vase 2nd Qualifying Round Pagham 0 - 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor This was the second cup match on the trot for YM after overcoming Eastbourne United in the RUR Charity Cup a few days before. Just like the previous encounter YM overcame their opposition in a tight contest helped by another goal scoring contribution from the inform Dave Brown. The match in truth was not a classic – both sides cancelling one another out – but Brown’s superb second half strike earned YM a place in the next round, eight wins away from a Wembley final! Most of YM’s forward play came from Dean Carden and Max Howell on the right with striker Phil Johnson the main target. At the other end ex Horsham FC forward Kieron Pamment kept Lewis Blaney on his toes. Although YM slightly shaded the first half few could argue about the goalless stalemate

that greeted the half time whistle being about right. The second half saw a much more purposeful performance from YM from the start as their passing game gave them most of the possession. Although YM now looked more assured and the most likely to get the result, Pagham caused problems on the break through Pamment’s pace but ‘keeper Blaney continued his fine form to deny the home side. The match was finally decided on 73 minutes with a moment of magic from Brown. After Pagham ‘keeper James Binfield had saved his long range effort, Brown took the resulting corner which came back out to him wide on the right. With Binfield out of position Brown hit a superb left footed shot from an acute angle over the helpless ‘keeper and into the net. Pagham pressed forward for the remaining 20 minutes to try and grab an equaliser but the YM defence, marshalled by the outstanding pair of Alex Gathern and Dean Carden, held firm to earn a home tie in the FA Vase 1st Round proper against Wessex League Premier Division side Horndean.
