Next year, the Cliburn will launch a new major program. The Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition and Festival will take place June 21–28, 2015, on the campus of TCU, and will attract the world’s most extraordinary pianists age 13 to 17. Applications are online now at Cliburn.org. “This will be a competition that will help us establish relationships with the top international talent at an earlier age,” said Jacques Marquis, Cliburn president and CEO, “but, just as importantly, this will be another means for the Cliburn to use its standing and expertise to encourage tomorrow’s great artists. We are providing a valuable forum for them to express themselves and an entrance to the next step of their journeys. The top international jurors, the media and webcast, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the festival atmosphere—which will include performance

experience and professional career advice—all make the Competition and Festival significantly useful for a student who has aspirations of being a professional musician.” (continued on Page 3)

THE FOUR-YEAR CLIBURN BRAND A Note from the President and CEO One year ago, all of us—the Cliburn staff, board, artists, and community—were on the precipice of a once-in-a-lifetime experience as we embarked on the successful presentation of the 14th edition of our signature program, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Through this major international festival, we were able to bring classical music to a wide public—which is at the very core of our mission—and we continue to do so through the busy concert tours of the major artists who were discovered. And what about the other three years? As we work to implement the strategic plan carefully and thoughtfully constructed by the board, keeping the Cliburn brand alive both locally and internationally over the entire four-year cycle has been highlighted as a top priority. Junior Competition Jurors Announced From the Chairman A renewed and refreshing energy, a collection of inspiring new ventures, and—of course— the breathtaking music all stand out over the past year at the Cliburn. We are fortunate to have each of you—our board of directors, volunteers, generous patrons, donors, sponsors, and the faithful audiences—to share in these accomplishments. Thank you for your continued dedication to the Cliburn. Our achievements occur in the wake of the loss of our namesake, Van Cliburn, who we will forever honor and remember. This year includes the first influences and effects of the Cliburn's strategic plan, revealing new initiatives and expanded programs. One of the finest examples is the new Cliburn Junior Competition and Festival. Van Cliburn often spoke of our mission to encourage a lifelong love of music-making. The Amateur Competition, which began in 1999, is representative of our success expanding the Cliburn programs in this mission. Now we come full circle with an event for the world's outstanding 13-17 year old pianists, aimed to encourage and inspire young artists to aspire to become professional musicians. We have received a significant verbal commitment from the Junior League of Fort Worth, the Cliburn's partner since 1966 for which we remain truly grateful, to provide volunteer support of the Junior Competition and Festival. We look forward to many of you joining in the volunteer effort for this wonderful new adventure in music. The Cliburn will again showcase the Fort Worth community as an international stage to celebrate and encourage musical talent. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support.

Carla Thompson Chairman of the Board

JON NAKAMATSU, chairman (United States) Since his dramatic 1997 Cliburn gold medal triumph, California native Jon Nakamatsu's brilliant but unassuming musicianship and eclectic repertoire have made him a clear favorite throughout the world both on the concert circuit and in the recording studio. He maintains a very active touring schedule with orchestra performances, chamber collaborations, and solo recitals, performing widely in North America, Europe, and the Far East. Mr. Nakamatsu records exclusively for harmonia mundi usa, which has released nine CDs to date. www.jonnakamatsu.com FABIO BIDINI (Italy) A prizewinner at the 1993 Cliburn and 1992 Busoni Competitions, Fabio Bidini is considered one of the top Italian pianists of his generation, sought after for recital, chamber, festival, and concerto engagements across the world. His discography consists of 13 recordings on renowned labels such as BMG. In 2009, he was appointed piano chair of one of the leading music schools in Europe, the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Mr. Bidini was one of the youngest graduates ever of the prestigious “Conservatorio Santa Cecilia” in Rome. www.fabiobidini.com CHRISTOPHER ELTON (United Kingdom) Edinburgh native Christopher Elton is professor emeritus of the Royal Academy of Music, London — a position awarded him in 2011, following 24 years of service as head of keyboard. His students have won or reached the finals in many top competitions, including the Cliburn, Tchaikovsky, Leeds, Shanghai, Taiwan, and Munich (ARD). A competition prizewinner himself, Mr. Elton also studied at the Royal Academy, where he achieved the unusual distinction of the highest performing award, the Dip. RAM, on both piano and cello. www.christopherdelton.talktalk.net

Other special prizes will be announced closer to the Competition dates.

CHOONG MO KANG (South Korea) Pianist Choong Mo Kang has performed to critical acclaim throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, including a monumental undertaking of performing the complete keyboard works of Bach over a 5-year time period. His students have been prizewinners in prominent competitions, such as Cliburn, Leeds, Shanghai, and many more. MARI KODAMA (Japan) Mari Kodama has established an international reputation for profound musicality and articulate virtuosity at the keyboard, with powerful, yet elegant performances throughout Europe, the United States, and Japan. She recently completed her latest recording project—the complete 32 Beethoven Sonatas for the PentaTone label. Ms. Kodama serves as artistic and musical director for the Forest Hill Musical Days festival, curates a series for young musicians at the Bad Kissengen Festival, and appears annually at Les Folles Journées in Tokyo. www.marikodama.com JON KIMURA PARKER (Canada) A veteran of the international concert stage, Jon Kimura Parker maintains a busy touring schedule as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. A true Canadian ambassador of music, Mr. Parker has given command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan—and is an officer of The Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian honor. A committed educator, he is Professor of Piano at The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. www.jonkimuraparker.com ORLI SHAHAM (Israel/United States) A consummate musician recognized for her grace, subtlety, and vitality, Orli Shaham has established an impressive international reputation as one of today's most gifted pianists— hailed by critics on four continents for her interpretations of both standard and modern repertoire, and recently referred to as “a first-rate Mozartean” (Chicago Tribune). Driven by a passion to bring classical music to new audiences, the Juilliard graduate maintains an active parallel career as a respected broadcaster, music writer, and lecturer. www.orlishaham.com

Lives of the Laureates

The 2013 Cliburn winners continue to garner praise for performances around the world. In the 2013–14 season, they collectively performed over 100 concerts, including successful debuts with The Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center, Aspen Summer Music Festival, Wolf Trap, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and in the Concertgebouw. In addition to the recordings of the medalists’ live Competition performances on the harmonia mundi label, Vadym Kholodenko and Sean Chen each released criticallyacclaimed solo albums in spring 2014. Some highlights of the upcoming season:

An Interview with

Barry Douglas

Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko has been named the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s first artistic partner, a three-year collaboration that will include professional

The Cliburn: What was your experience like at the 1985 Cliburn? Your first impressions of Fort Worth?

The Cliburn: Tell us about Camerata Ireland. What was your vision for the group originally—and how has that come to fruition and/or changed since its origins in 1999?

Mr. Douglas: It was a new world for me—very warm people and audiences who were passionate for music and the piano and for their Van!

Mr. Douglas: The mission of the orchestra was principally 3 things: 1. to encourage new young Irish talent and to give them a platform; 2. to show the international audience what Ireland can deliver as classical performance, given that Ireland is known more for its rock and traditional music, theatre, visual arts, and the written word; and 3. to celebrate the new era of cooperation and peace on the island by creating an all-Ireland artistic entity. We are very fortunate to have the joint patronage of the President of Ireland and Her Majesty The Queen (Britain).

Mr. Douglas: Bill and Jocelyn (Wuester) are those rare people who understand and empathize, and this has made it a rare delight to be their Texan “son” and friend. We have enjoyed a great group of years together, and they have visited us in Ireland and France. A great couple with a great family. I am enormously grateful to them for their friendship and love! The Cliburn: The recording project you're currently undertaking is monumental. What inspired you toward the complete piano works of both Brahms and Schubert? Mr. Douglas: I was always very close to Brahms, and so that was natural; but Schubert has emerged and poked me in the ribs and has made me sit up. What an honor to do this. I am very grateful to my recording company Chandos Records.

The Cliburn: In 2011, you returned to Moscow as a juror for the Tchaikovsky Competition, 25 years after your victory there in 1986. How did it feel to be on the other side? Mr. Douglas: More scary! I am not a “ready-made juror” and so my decision to be on this jury was guided by the fact that Valery Gergiev asked me, that the other jurors were people I respected enormously, and that I have a close bond with Moscow due to my gold medal in 1986 and due to the frequent invitations to give concerts there. The Cliburn: Your career has been connected to Van Cliburn in many ways over the years. Can you share your favorite memory of or story about him?

The Cliburn: How are you deciding which pieces go on each disc? Mr. Douglas: I sit with a cup of coffee and see what comes to mind and what comes naturally—no great philosophy. The Cliburn: You've become known as a cultural ambassador for Ireland. How was that role established, and how has it evolved over the years? Mr. Douglas: It was quite simply my trying to give back to Ireland and young people what I have received from great individuals over the years. Through my festival and orchestra Camerata Ireland, it has really developed over the years, and I am so happy to see their success.

recordings and a tour. (Details on Page 6.) He will also perform and record with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and make debuts with the Brevard Music Center and Al Bustan Festivals; the orchestras of Indianapolis, San Diego, Rochester, Phoenix, and Madrid’s RTVE; and in recital in Boston, Seattle, Miami, and Paris. Silver Medalist Beatrice Rana makes major debuts with the Detroit Symphony and LA Philharmonic, and in recital in Atlanta, Cleveland, and in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center. Third-prize winner Sean Chen traverses the United States, making his debuts with the Milwaukee Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and a recital tour of Hawaii.

Below are the six winners’ concert dates for summer and fall 2014. Complete tour dates and links to tickets are listed on Cliburn.org.

Since taking bronze at the 1985 Cliburn Competition and gold in the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition, Barry Douglas has established a major international career as a concert pianist, conductor, and recording artist. Described by The Nottingham Post as a pianist with “raw emotion” and “dazzling technique,” he has been lauded by critics for his tremendous power and breathtaking playing where “muscle and imagination come together” (The Telegraph). Mr. Douglas is an exclusive Chandos recording artist and is currently undertaking a monumental project to record the complete works for solo piano of both Brahms and Schubert. He also founded the chamber orchestra Camerata Ireland in 1999 to celebrate and nurture the very best young musicians from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Cliburn: You're still very close with your host family from the Competition. Can you tell us about them and that relationship?

Winners Update

Mr. Douglas: There are so many wonderful memories, and everyone has said it so eloquently in the past. I loved him as a person, a musician, and colleague. He was a great guide to me all through the years on a professional and human level. One occasion immediately comes to me now as it was the most recent—I was very fortunate to have had a super and long dinner at his home in November 2012 when we talked about everything from childhood to the present day. I will never forget him, as will everyone who had the good fortune to know him. The Cliburn: Any future plans or projects you can tell us about? Mr. Douglas: I’m looking forward to playing Brahms 1 with Maestro Gergiev and the London Symphony at this year’s Proms in London. I’m also looking forward to touring South America, China, and Europe with Camerata Ireland in the next 18 months. I’m excited about a new Irish project I am developing, and I am having the best time with Brahms and Schubert.

Vadym Kholodenko named FWSO Artistic Partner

THE FOUR-YEAR CLIBURN BRAND (continued from page 1)

Under the direction of music director Miguel Harth-Bedoya, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra recently named Vadym Kholodenko as its first artistic partner, a three-year collaboration that begins with performances of the complete Prokofiev concertos in the first two seasons (2014–15 and 2015–16), which will be recorded and released by harmonia mundi usa. He will also join them in a tour of Spain in May 2016—the orchestra's first international tour in over 25 years. “I have been searching for more than 10 years for an exceptional artist to serve as the FWSO’s first artistic partner – a performer of the highest caliber who would commit to the vision and efforts of the FWSO over several seasons," said Harth-Bedoya. "I believe we have identified and secured such an artist with Vadym Kholodenko." This represents a thrilling extended relationship with the FWSO—the Cliburn's partner since its inception. The orchestra has performed in the Final Round of every Cliburn Competition. Additionally this season, Vadym will perform and record the Grieg concerto and Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 2 with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, also under the baton of Harth-Bedoya.

Born to a North Texas ranching family, Crystelle Waggoner raised cattle and thoroughbred horses. A wonderfully generous woman, a patron of the arts, and a supporter of medical charities during her lifetime, Miss Waggoner established a 50-year trust, the Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust, to benefit charitable organizations in the area. She died in 1982 and over the past 30 years, the trust has made millions of dollars in grants to the Fort Worth and North Texas community. The Cliburn is a grateful recipient of contributions made from the Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust, which is managed by U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. Over the years the Trust has supported galas, competitions, and Cliburn Concerts, including helping to initiate the Cliburn at the Modern series in 2003. The Cliburn is currently in the middle of a three-year grant for general operating support. Having this grant is a tremendous help as it allows the Cliburn to plan for future programming. Darlene Mann, U.S. Trust Managing Director and Market Trust Director said: “Crystelle Waggoner had a love for the arts during her lifetime, and we are so pleased to help carry out her legacy by supporting organizations known for excellence such as the

Cliburn.” Also a current Cliburn board member, Mrs. Mann works to ensure that the Waggoner Trust provides a broad range of support for numerous charitable programs. Mrs. Mann started at the bank, then known as First National Bank of Fort Worth, in 1969 and worked in various departments until joining the Trust Department in 1976, where she currently manages the Trust Group for Fort Worth, Midland, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. A graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, Mrs. Mann currently serves as a volunteer for the Board of Visitors; Amon Carter Museum of American Art; National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, Finance Committee; the Cliburn; Fort Worth Charitable Trust Committee; Fort Worth Business and Estate Council; and WARM Place. She has been married 46 years to Howell Mann, and they have two children and 5 grandchildren. The Cliburn is pleased to recognize both the Crystelle Waggoner Charitable Trust and Darlene Mann for the many years of support to the Cliburn. We deeply appreciate their contributions and remain honored for their ongoing support and service.
