Interestingly, many of the local names I received have already graced our covers, or been featured in The City Magazine articles: Mayor Oscar Leeser, Bob Wingo, Dr. Keith Johnson, Emma Schwartz, Yolanda Arriola, Mary Kipp, Renard Johnson, Randy Johnson…these are some of El Paso’s most obviously successful locals. I can’t help but ask myself what these “successful” people have in common, or is that a fair question? I concluded that for all their diversity, the strikingly successful groups seem to have many shared traits, or definitions that together propel success, and most commonly, it is a deeply-seated belief in their exceptionality. Is success defined by financial gains? I think, partly. Is it defined by power and status? Again, partly, but it seems success might, more importantly, be defined by a person who lives the life they’ve set out to obtain for themselves, a life that had a purposed direction, rather than settling for only what life offers. The man on our March cover has done just that. He fought to follow his dreams and place his mark, his brand, if you will, in the world of art that is not always

t’s a gray day in December. One of those rare dreary days in El Paso that makes you wonder where the color in this normally vibrant town has gone to. I found myself wondering exactly this the day I went to visit Hal Marcus, local multimedia artist whose work has become synonymous with El Paso and the growth of the community.
For decades, Marcus’ work has been a prominent feature in El Paso. Having lived in the same neighborhood since growing up, in Sunset Heights, he has a clear and keen understanding for the culture and people in this city. I entered Marcus’ gallery on Oregon Street and was greeted warmly by Ruben Vasquez, manager at the Hal Marcus Studio and Gallery. “Ah,” I thought as my eyes adjusted to the lobby made lambent by myriad artworks smartly hung on the colorful walls, and almost every other surface. I was awash in hues of avocado green, sorbet shades of pink, orange and yellow, and oceanic blues that made me think of the sea. “This is where all the colors come to play.” Marcus has been a professional artist since 1970, but his artistic inclinations began as an adolescent. “I decided when I was a young man -- maybe around high school -- that I was an artist. This is what I was going to do,” he said while we toured the gallery. Marcus’ artistic abilities were aided by his high school art teacher. “I went to Coronado High School and had a teacher named Isela,” he says. “She nurtured me and she encouraged me,” which is sometimes all you need. Marcus was inspired by images and films that celebrated Rembrandt, and decided art was his destiny. But Marcus would have to educate his family on art’s importance while also learning to be an artist. Marcus’ father owned a local grocery store a few blocks away from Marcus’ current home. Being a businessman, his father was initially apprehensive about his son’s creative aspirations. “My father was all business,” he says firmly, more seriously than any other anecdote he’d shared thus far. (This grocery store is where Marcus developed his business acumen.) But his father let up – ever so slightly – once Marcus, as a young man in high school sold his very first painting to a friend at a party. From there, Marcus began actively working on his art pieces and the art of making a sale; art is a business after all and the prototypical notion of the starving artist feeding his soul through artistic expression, while satisfying a grumbling in his belly, was not something Marcus was interested in. To put it simply, he wanted more.

he two owners of J&K are
young, passionate creatives that proudly represent El Paso. They exude what a lot of young creatives do: a strong desire to keep creating and a will to make things happen. Both born and raised in El Paso, they have not only seen the city grow, but they have also most recently been apart of that growth. Meet Johnny Escalante and Enrique “Kiki” Cervantes, the duo responsible for a lot of positive attitudes and progress in the city. Their passion for their city has become contagious, exciting more and more people to stay and contribute to that growth. Because of their sincerity and motivation, the rest of El Paso can see the ideas they are bringing to life. “I must have been like 21,” Escalante says of when the J&K brand started. “I always used to throw parties at my parent’s house when I was in high school and college. We used to have a frat house that wasn’t a real frat house. [Kiki] knew a lot of the bar owners in town so he’s the one that connected me with Octavio Gomez of The Garden. We did [this one] party together and that’s kind of how J&K started.” Escalante and Cervantes’ entrepreneurial spirit is in their genes. Their family’s businesses include construction and denim manufacturing, respectfully. The two have come a long way since that first party. Their events now close multiple streets downtown for Trapfest Block Party, fill up the El Paso County Coliseum and bring big artists to the Sun City. The two have also just recently celebrated their oneyear anniversary for their new bar, Later, Later, a huge milestone.

We’re in Sunset Heights, in a house that was built in the 1930’s; you have the view of Juarez, the Chihuahua’s stadium down the street. It really is what El Paso is. It’s about embracing it.” Advice for others starting a business? Taking from the Nike slogan, Escalante says, “Just do it.” He adds, “So many ideas die before they’re even implemented, it’s kind of sad to be honest.” Cervantes states, “I think you really have to love what you do. I think that’s the majority of it. There’s going to be ups and downs, mostly downs, so you got to have thick skin and the will to really succeed, that passion for what your vision really is.” Remarkably and humbly, they don’t consider themselves successful. Defining success as having a healthy balance of happiness, getting better and doing what you love, the two agree that they have a long ways to go before they get to where they want to be. “We always joke that we have so many good ideas that always die. The most important thing for any entrepreneur or any business is the value of your time. There’s only so much you can get done and you really have to evaluate what your ultimate goal is,” Escalante says. Don’t plan on them stopping anytime soon. With a five-year goal in sight, a second bar coming soon and numerous ideas still brewing, J&K and their team won’t be slowing

March, 2017 or one local Las Cruces man, success came humbly, yet profoundly. Enter Royal Jones. Born to a military family in Fort Dix, N.J., standard protocol had the would-be entrepreneurial giant and his family relocated to Anthony, Texas by age six. An Anthony High School graduate, the teenager was already driving trucks at age 18 and bought his first diesel truck at only 19 years of age. Well-versed in everything heavy-machinery, the inevitable trucking mogul honed his skills at an even much younger age as a result of working his father’s businesses; which consisted of a lumber yard and hardware store in Anthony, as well as a cinder block and ready mix cement business not far in Vinton, Texas. In no time, Jones was operating a forklift, unloading cement trucks and in his words, “could drive every piece of machinery” they had by the tender age of 12. With an uncanny knowledge for an industry he would eventually pioneer, Jones set out to make his dream a reality. Promoted to a managerial position at only 18 years old because as he says objectively, he “knew how to do everything” needed to run his father’s operation, was not as easy step in the process, but an experience that helped shaped the man he is today. Sharing openly, Jones tells of his early staff’s inability to take him seriously and says at times he felt like an “outcast.” Have times changed! The go-getting, unstoppable machine of a young entrepreneur both knew his calling and had no time to waste. Recognizing the talents of longtime friend, Jimmy Ray, a prodigy in the realm of mechanics who was already making strides in the industry as his own truck operator and mechanic, the two men joined forces and combined their talents in truck driving and diesel mechanics and established Mesilla Valley Trucking (MVT). That was 1981, with only one truck behind them. Above everything, what’s most telling of Jones is his humble and down to earth nature. Whether it’s his commitment to his family or staff, by consensus this is an unpretentious man. In fact, Jones is quick to recant the days when he was first starting out and the lessons he learned from his parents that he carries with him to this day, to never believe he was better than anyone else, ever.

Soto recounted a story in which as a child of about 8 or 9 had broken an arm while riding his bike, rushed home to call his mother, only to have to wait hours while his older sister talked on the phone. Fast forward several years and Soto graduated from Coronado High School. It was in school where his passion for film was ignited. “In high school I did a lot of speech and debate. I knew I wanted to work with actors and theatre and that whole world,” he said. “I knew I wanted to work in movies.” To that end, Soto traveled to the land of glitz and glamour and enrolled in the film program at the University of Southern California upon graduating high school. His stint at the school was cut short however, when he began to work full time with a director and producer team. Director George Tilman and producer Bob Teitel, who are the masterminds behind the “Barbershop” movie series and the “Soul Food” film and television spin off. After joining the team, Soto helped with the biopic “Notorious,” named after deceased rapper The Notorious B.I.G. The Latino family holiday film, “Nothing Like the Holidays,” was another project Soto worked on with Teitel and Tilman.
Soto explained his role: “I was the assistant to the director. I was integral in developing the script, I made recommendations on casting, I was involved with pre and post-production. I was basically the director’s right hand man. It was my first taste of how a studio motion picture gets created from a script, through production and release.” Soto immediately shed some light on a common misconception surrounding the movie industry: www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Sundance is such a brand name, so all the agents and managers want to say, ‘This kid who got a movie into Sundance; let me see what he’s all about and what he’s cooking up next.’ So for indie film makers, that’s kind of the Mecca.”

A couple years ago Soto released his first feature length film, “The Divorce Party,” a ripped from the headlines take on singer/songwriter Jack White and his ex-wife Karen Elson. Currently, Soto is working on a couple different projects, including a web series which is slated for release next month and another short film titled, “Chavez Ravine.” He plans to submit the film to the Sundance Film Festival.

Quillium Prehensile Tailed Porcupine
The El Paso Zoo’s two adorable prehensile-tailed porcupines, Vito and Flower, welcomed their baby boy in September 2016. With big dark eyes and a cute bulbous nose, prehensile-tailed porcupines are irresistibly adorable – and even more so when they’re babies! When he was born, the baby porcupine Quillium (also called a porcupette), was covered in soft brownish-orange hair for about a week before he began growing quills. Since he is a prehensile-tailed porcupine, however, he doesn’t have quills all the way down his tail; near the tip of the tail stays soft to the touch. Quillium loves fruits and veggies, especially bananas, watermelon, and peanuts. He also loves his daddy and likes to snuggle close when he’s sleeping.

ometimes the “feel good” food that we need isn’t fried chicken with mashed potatoes and corn bread (that you picked up from KFC, let’s be honest). We need something that satisfies our taste buds and feels good in our
bodies. Seafood and risotto is right up that alley of comfort. Your mouth will water when thinking of the combination of Atlantic cod cooked with eggplant, sitting on top of a bed or risotto. And if it doesn’t, maybe the pictures will help.
Try this recipe out and be the hero at the dinner table.
Risotto
Ingredients:
6 cups chicken broth 3 1/2 tablespoons butter 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil 2 shallots, finely diced 2 cups Arborio rice 1/4 cup dry white wine 1 cup grated Parmesan 2 tablespoons parsley, fresh, chopped 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4 teaspoons grated lemon zest

Directions: 1. Bring broth to simmer in large saucepan over medium heat. Reduce heat to low; cover to keep warm. 2. Melt 1 1/2 tablespoons butter with oil in a large heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add shallots and sautée until tender, about 6 minutes. 3. Add rice; stir 1 minute. Add wine and stir until evaporated, about 30 seconds. Add 1 1/2 cups hot broth; simmer until absorbed, stirring frequently. 4. Add remaining broth 1/2 cup at a time, allowing broth to be absorbed before adding more and stirring frequently until rice is creamy and tender, about 35 minutes. 5. Stir in cheese and remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Stir in parsley, lemon juice, and lemon peel. Season risotto with salt and pepper. Set aside. 6. Wrap the thinly sliced eggplant around the cod, hold with a toothpick if necessary. 7. In a heavy-bottom pan, add one glug of olive oil, heat on medium high until oil glistens. Season fish with salt and pepper and add to pan.

e all have a purpose in life and sometimes we may not know exactly what that purpose is, but the universe has a way of leading us to our destined path. I would like to share with you someone I met who has a unique story to share. David “Nino” Rodriguez was born and raised in El Paso and is a Heavy Weight World Champion with an impressive record of 37-235, of which 25 were first-round knockouts. He was ranked 13th in the world by the WBC and 12th by the WBA. His first-round knock outs surpass Mike Tyson’s earlier record. His latest accomplishment is becoming the author of his first book, “When the Lights Go Out.” He found out at an early age of five what bullying was all about and learned to fight back not only outside, but inside the ring where he became world champion. While being on top of the world his life changed in a moment’s notice when he was violently attacked in Arizona and his neck was slashed open. He received 369 stitches and soon after slipped into a coma for two days due to the loss of blood nearly costing him his life. Out of that sheer determination, Rodriguez took to the boxing ring to regain his status only to be handed his first brutal defeat of being knocked out in the last ten seconds of the fight he was winning. One more time he suffered another loss in a second return fight. Nothing stopped as Rodriguez returned to the ring for a third fight back and delivered a victorious knockout win in the first round. Ultimately, costing him a permanent injury to his spine which required spinal surgery. His recovery was much needed down time for personal reflection. While healing and facing an uncertain future. Rodriguez began to write about his life on his iPhone. At first his writing was more cathartic release for himself and immediate family, not realizing he would eventually turn it into a book.

The irony he finds in his experience is how he was once the insecure and troubled adolescent apologizing in front of the classroom for his mischief, to now standing in front of auditoriums speaking to the youth he once was, now in a suit and tie. We all think we have a choice in our lives of what we want to become, but the universe has a higher divine plan for our true destiny. Sometimes our battles inside and outside of the ring lead us to where we are truly meant to be and our life’s purpose. What not to do: Don’t show up stressed or disoriented: We all have our bad days, but showing up to a date with negative energy is no good. Count to ten, take a deep breath and push it aside. Vent all you want to your friends later, but not to your date. Be on time. Need I say more? This rule of thumb be incorporated into your everyday life, especially for a date. When you are trying to get to know someone, the last thing you want to do is give a bad impression right off the bat. If an emergency came up last minute and you can’t make it on time, a simple text or phone call to your date should be done asap. s science and technology rapidly advances in skin care and anti-aging, more and more products are available to target and correct any skin issue imaginable for everyone from teens to seniors and everyone in-between. The unlimited options available can make selecting a consistent and effective skin care routine, best suited for your age and skin concerns, quite daunting. Beyond the daily use of an SPF 30+ moisturizer (which should be used by all skin types and age groups daily without fail), there are no clear answers as to what you should do to get your best possible skin for your age. To help guide you, I have pinpointed some key considerations to take note for those in their 20’s, 30 to 40’s and everyone over the age of 40.

As you exit your teen years, you should be practicing and further developing good habits to provide important protection from the sun and other environmental damage. This should be the foundation of your skin care regime for the years to come. If you suffer from acne, the hormonal changes that occur in your 20’s may see breakouts shift from your forehead and midface to closer to your chin and jawline. As your skin begins to produce less collagen and moisture, the harsh products you may have used in the past will end up leaving your skin feeling tight, dry and dull. that they absolutely love— one that evokes a warm

First thing’s first
Make room for those special items! Start by categorizing your clothes into tops, pants, jackets, dresses, and accessories. Begin with the heaviest and make your way down to the lightest (ie. coats first, then sweaters, tops, dresses and pants). Take quick emotional inventory, how does that piece make you feel? Happy or sad, heavy or light? If it does nothing for you, get rid of it! Make this year all about surrounding yourself with things you love. Yes, that means tossing impulse purchases, even if they cost too much. Like relationships, release what doesn’t serve you and move forward.
Second tip Don’t store out-of-season items. Everything should be on display and visible (you still wear t-shirts in winter, so why store them?). This way, you can winterize certain pieces. Mix and match and maximize your closet. Follow the golden rule about tidying up: If you haven’t used or worn it in a year, get rid of it. Don’t trick yourself into thinking, “I’ll wear it eventually,” because if you didn’t wear it last year, you won’t this year.
Finally, fold all cotton up ways

itting near the Roman Bridge at the Café Venezia, I hear bits and pieces of several European languages mixed in all manners of relaxed tones – as Tavira truly
appeals to anyone in search of January sun, with delicious food, affordable fare and lots and lots of local color. All are heard over the splashing sounds of a gushing fountain, the occasional zing of motor bikes and the plaintive call of seagulls as they hover over the fishing boats on the River Gilao. One by one, like lizards in the sun, we remove our scarves and mittens, undo our lightweight jackets and take off our hats. It is 12:40 p.m. and the midday rays are intoxicating. There are at least 20 occupied tables, mostly by an interesting mob of gray-haired retirees. Some have rented apartments in the old town center over the winter, but others have taken advantage of Portugal’s open door

English newspapers and English menus are readily available and a lot of the stores advertise in both English and Portuguese, so shopping and entertainment are also a pleasure. Most importantly, the sun seems to shine equally on all, so if you’re considering a European holiday or an overseas property purchase, Tavira might be just what you’re looking for.
