“El Paso is a feeling,” said photographer Mark Paulda. His new photo book “Si El Paso”, the third in a series showcasing El Paso, exemplifies that feeling—it features a plethora of gorgeous photos of the city and its surrounding landscape, supplemented with excerpts of many individual El Pasoans’ experiences of the culture. Mark initially released his book titled “Celebrating El Paso” ten years ago—

Having previously worked as a construction project manager with over 25 years of leadership management experience, she saw an opportunity to provide valuable customer service as a loan officer that she recognized, firsthand, was lacking. “You need to set up the right expectations, you need to educate your customer base and you need to communicate throughout the process,” Sandy says. Working with a mortgage broker allows Sandy to provide different loan options to meet the client’s goals. She is able to effectively structure loan proposals and offer certain loans that banks are not able to. Sandy says, “My job is to paint the picture to the loan company’s underwriters, so they get to know my clients, understand their history, so their loans can be approved.” As a three-time cancer survivor, Sandy knows what it means to not give up and likes the challenge of taking somebody who may be credit challenged and see them all the way through to achieve their dream of buying a home. B a l l e t T h e at r e I n t e r n at i o n a l O r c h e s t r a

l Paso’s love affair with ballet goes all the way back to the 1950s when a young German immigrant by the name of Ingeborg Heuser moved here and decided to open her own studio. Her company’s excellent performances quickly garnered her a reputation as one of the region’s best ballet teachers, paving the way for her appointment as a UTEP

instructor in 1960. Heuser headed the university’s dance program for many years, and by most accounts she did one heck of a job. However, in 2006, she retired, leaving El Paso with a bit of a void with regards to classical dance training. It was at that time that one of Heuser’s former students, Marta Katz, burst into action, intent on seeing ballet continue to thrive in the Sun City. By 2007, Katz’s El Paso Conservatory of Dance was up and running. Katz was ambitious, not content for her studio to be a run of the mill after-school activity center: “The goal has always been to train the students to become professionals. Obviously not all of them will become pros, they may not even want to in the end, but I thought it was important that that quality of dance instruction be available in El Paso.” Katz admitted that her lofty expectations made things difficult in the beginning: “The kind of training we offer isn’t for everyone … It’s very difficult for the girls. Especially as they get into high school, the girls want to do things that normal high school girls do … but when you’re training like this, there just isn’t always enough time.” The specialized nature of Katz’ studio wasn’t ever great for business, but she and the team got by. A couple years after opening the studio, Katz decided to start a company that would put on performances. “I called it El Paso Youth Ballet because I didn’t want to give people the wrong impression. At that time, we were very young and it wouldn’t have made sense to have some grand name.” As the years went by, however, the performances got better and better, until eventually some of Katz associates suggested she change the company title to better reflect its level of sophistication. Now called the El Paso Ballet Theatre, Katz and her team are gearing up to put on their eleventh annual Nutcracker ballet. “It’s really incredible how far we’ve come over the past decade. We have some dancers who are performing at a professional level … they really are that good,” exclaimed Katz. In addition to dancing better than ever, this year’s Nutcracker is special because it will be accompanied by the Ballet Theatre International Orchestra, a professional group led by renowned composer Guillermo Quezada, the former Conductor

of Orquesta Sinfónica at UACJ. “The Nutcracker’s music is a huge part of what makes it such a classic ballet … it was written by Tchaikovsky. So, to have a professional orchestra perform with us is a really big deal,” explained Katz. For Katz, however, the show goes way beyond her dance company. “It’s important that this kind of art be available to people in El Paso. Everyone deserves to experience it, and you never know what effect it may have on the kids in the audience. Maybe it will inspire them to dance or go into the arts www.thecitymagazineelp.com

in some way,” explained Katz. To that end, ticket prices are kept low, ranging between $25-30, and multiple free and low-cost shows are put on for kids from the community at UTEP every year. Reflecting on her past 11 years in the industry, Katz couldn’t help but express her gratitude for all the people that have made these performances possible: “I do work hard, but you can’t imagine how much help I get. These shows are really a whole community effort. My students practice so hard, my team is always there and we get help from volunteers too. I really can’t tell you how grateful I am for all everyone involved puts into this.” Moving forward, Katz is hopeful that El Paso’s great ballet tradition will carry on. “I feel like we’ve set up a strong base and I hope that it will keep going after I step down. I think

it will, I really do,” said the dance instructor.

St. Augustine Artisan Pizza + Craft Beer Saint Augustine is an anachronism. David, Alejandro, and their team strive on combining the best of two eras with their wood-fired oven and their signature dough while adding a border town twist with ingredients ranging from habanero sauce, to grasshoppers, to al pastor pork—without forgetting classics like the margherita and pepperoni. The pies at St. Augustine are baked in a brick oven with fresh, never-frozen, ingredients. The dough is also prepared in-house. There will never be a rack of prepared dough pies waiting idly for customers to arrive. Much like with the ingredients, there is a vast array of wine and craft beer to accompany any meal. Poe Toyota When I visited Poe Toyota in late November 2019, the dealership was leading all others in El Paso, in new car sales. Part of that success, of course, can be attributed to the product itself. Toyotas, as you probably already know, are renowned for their combination of reliability and safety—those new 4Runners ain’t too hard on the eyes either. However, Poe’s popularity can’t be explained by Toyota’s reputation alone. The dealership prides itself on making customers happy—from the moment they walk in the door, until long after the initial purchase. Gerald Miller, Poe Toyota’s general manager and an El Paso native, explained his group’s mission to me, saying: “I’ve been in the new car business for 36 years, 25 of which I’ve spent here at Poe Automotive. I learned pretty early on that what’s good for the customer is good for business. Nobody wants to feel pressured into buying a car, they want a knowledgeable person to help them find the perfect vehicle for their budget. So that’s exactly what our employees do.” Miller then added, “And we’re honestly all so thankful to the El Paso community, for nominating us for Best Car Dealership, and for giving us their business. E.P. Dentistry 4 Kids For more than a decade, E.P. Dentistry 4 Kids has been making quality dental care accessible to kids coming from families of all incomes. With three locations and a qualified and caring team, E.P. Dentistry 4 Kids is all about preventing cavities without compromising the comfort of their patients. As a pediatric office, they see patients from as young as six months to as old as 20 years old. Their focus is on the comfort of the kids—they always allow the parents into the back, whether to accompany an exam or actual treatment. Their focus is making sure that they take away that fear of the dentist that many patients feel, making sure they feel special and that all the dental assistants, the dentist, the receptionist—everybody— is paying close attention to them to make sure everything is going smoothly. They emphasize dental care both in and out of the office, and make sure that they give each child the knowledge they need to keep up their dental care—both in the office and at home. This is because of one of E.P. Dentistry 4 Kids’ ultimate goals: they want to prevent cavities for their patients, 100 percent of the time, while giving their patients the ability to prevent cavities themselves at home. Tuff Hedeman, He’s not full of bull,

H

istorically, El Paso is famous for our gunfighters and our cowboys. Songs have been written about our men, most notably Marty Robbins wrote a

love song about a young cowboy in our west Texas town of El Paso, falling in love with a Mexican woman in Rosas Cantina. Not far from that famous cantina, a young Richard “Tuff” Hedeman grew up on the Sunland Park race track where his dad, Red Hedeman, was famously known throughout the New Mexico and Texas horse racing community. Born into a western family, and being the youngest of seven, meant you were taught at an early age the meaning of hard work. Tuff’s young days began before the sunrise, feeding animals, mucking stalls, and exercising several race horses, all before the rest of the kids were waking up to catch the school bus. The intensity of this way of life, teaches the importance of work ethic, the importance of a job well done, and a mental strength where giving up was never an option. These lessons instilled at a young age formed him into the competitive hard-working man he is today, with the mindset and discipline to win. When asked about the roles his parents played in his life he said, “My dad (Red Hedeman) was the hardest working man I know and one of the coolest.” “And my mom, she did whatever it took to help us be successful … I was lucky.” “I had the best parents you could ever ask for.” Born at Providence Hospital, March 2, 1963, Tuff started riding calves at the age of four on the West Side of El Paso, at the “The Upper Valley Rodeo Club.” Young Richard Hedeman earned the nickname “Tough Nut” after a car door slammed on his hand and he didn’t cry or complain. Tuff says growing up with a name like Tuff, was much like being given the name Sue, it meant you either fought or turned around and walked off, he says he was never good at walking off.

He’s the American Cowboy | By: SHELLEY MOZELLE |

That bravery and can-do attitude propelled Tuff to a heavily decorated, professional bull-riding career spanning 15 years. At 56 years of age, Tuff has many accolades in the arena, including eleven-time NFR Qualifier, four-time World Champion Bull Rider, and the first bull rider with one-million dollars in career earnings, and if that’s not enough, Tuff was honorably inducted in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. One of his most well-known rides ever, was when he rode his tenth-round bull to the eight second buzzer at the NFR, securing his second world championship. He continued that same ride another eight seconds in memory of his closest friend Lane Frost, who’d tragically passed away five months earlier in a bull riding accident. This ride will always be remembered as one of the NFR’s greatest moments, hence why Tuff is known as “King of The Bull Riders.”

December/January, 2020

T h e Y e a r i n E n t e r ta i n m e n t As 2019 comes to a close we reflect on all that entertainment has had to offer, particularly in our city. This past year has been exciting, and the support has been unsurmountable. Endgame came in as the #1 film for the year, with Disney’s The Lion King coming in for a strong second. The highly anticipated fourth installment to the animated series, Toy Story, came in at number three. Fourth and fifth was Marvel’s own Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far from Home. Completing the top-10 are Aladdin, Joker, IT: Chapter Two, US and Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Action, Adventure and Thrillers really stole the show this year. As the Plaza Classic Film Festival went into its 12th year, it has only grown in popularity. It El Paso Electric Presents Broadway in El

The Year in sports

Super Bowl 2019 As the first team, since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, to win a Super Bowl a year after losing it, The New England Patriots took down the Los Angeles Rams winning their sixth bowl. With a relatively low scoring game, Superbowl LIII was one of the lowest scoring super bowl games to date. As the teams traded punts, they held a 3-3 score after three quarters. While the Rams defense is what kept them in the game, their offense was not up to par. As far as the Patriots, all they and Tom Brady needed was a drive in the fourth quarter. A 41-yard field goal put the final score at 13-3.

NBA Finals As the underdog team, the Toronto Raptors beat two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors in the 2019 NBA Finals. Raptors won 4 out of the 6 six games, and closed things out with a final score of 114-110 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. Kawhi Leonard was named Finals MVP, averaging 30.8 points, 0.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists, making it look easy. As for Pascal Siakam, NMSU alum, while last season was his

breakout year, this year’s finals was as good a time as any to see how his game has blossomed. With a 26 point and ten-rebound effort in Game 6, Sports illustrated dubs him the future of the Raptors. While this was the first NBA Championship for Toronto it was also the first win for a team based outside the United States. Their win inspired a wave of celebration throughout Canada. Fans rallied and paraded through downtown Canada as years of patience, support and devotion finally paid off.

MLB World Series In the 115th edition of the Major League Baseball World Series, the Washington Nationals went up against the 2017 World Series Champions, the Houston Astros. As the teams headed into game 7, the series was tied 3-3. During the bottom of the 9th in game 7, with three balls and two strikes, pitcher Daniel Hudson pulled through and got the last strike. For the first time in franchise history the Washington Nationals became the 2019 World Series Champions. This was a big win considering the last time a Washington team won in the World Series was the Washington Senators in 1924.

Locomotive Championship Playoffs Although founded in 2018, the El Paso Locomotive made their debut in the USL Championship in 2019. Having had 18 events on the El Paso calendar has allowed them to showcase the talent that makes up the team. While the team provides a high-quality sporting experience it also allows for the gathering of fans alike and creates excitement and passion within the community. The El Paso Locomotive made history as they hosted their first playoffs match, The Western Conference Semi-Finals, at Southwest University Park against Sacramento Republic FC. Although both teams had not scored for much of the first half, Locomotive led 1-0 at halftime. With the final two goals scored at the 83rd and 88th minute of the game, the El Paso Locomotive won with a final score of 3-0, allowing the team to advance to the USL Championship Final.

El Paso Rhinos

The team, led by head coach Cory Herman, defended their title and claimed their fourth Thorne cup title. The victory was secured by forward, Max Kamper, who shot the winning goal in the final minutes of the third period. As a team that believes in engaging with the community that offers continued support, they held a party for fans as an opportunity to celebrate with the players, coaches and staff. Besides securing another win, a dream for players to acquire an NCAA scholarship to play hockey or a pro contract was realized. Former Rhinos forward, Florian Seelmaan, went on to join the roster of the Hรถchstadt Alligators in Germany as Max Kamper, went on to play with Iowa State. Three other players, Adam Stalzer, JC Dubecky and Ty Erramouspe committed to play hockey at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Noodles & Dumplings There is no guide to being a successful first-time restaurant owner and it is certainly a labor of love. As someone who traveled to places like LA and New York for authentic Chinese food, Michelle Xu, owner of Noodles and Dumplings, decided to bring that authenticity right here to the Sun City. She also looked to those locations for chefs with the necessary experience. “It was a risk starting a business like this because I didn’t know how it would do, but we’ve been packed since our opening,” says Michelle. While the focus is just that—noodles and dumplings— having everything made fresh, in house, was important for Michelle. While the chefs have over 20 years’ experience in the delicate art of hand pulled noodles, they also have accolades in China as well. Additionally, the restaurant has a glass window which allows for guests to witness their dishes being made to order. “The difference between us and other places in town is everything is made fresh … there are no pre-made sauces, everything is pre proportioned, it takes time to make and once an item is sold out, it is sold out because of that,” Michelle explains. While there is a set menu, Michelle is always excited to update it with new food items for guests to try. “I’m so grateful for our customers and their patience, we wouldn’t be here without them … it’s fulfilling to see our customers leave happy and it makes it all worth it,” she says.

Community is at the heart of this credit union, from gifting thousands of dollars to local non-profits every month or granting scholarships to aspiring students to establishing an exclusive High School Spirit Debit Card program that donates cash for every qualifying swipe to local high schools. TFCU demonstrates their passion for community service in the amount of time team members give through volunteering at food pantries and selling homemade burritos to raise money for the El Paso Children’s Hospital Change for Care campaign. It’s no surprise the organization donates an average of $100 per employee for the United Way check deduction program. That’s where Dr. Daniel Garcia comes in. Advanced Practice Chiropractor and proud veteran, he started A New You health spa 10 years ago because he wanted to offer El Pasoans a healthy alternative to many common conditions. Online News Landscape Although television still remains the most popular source of news for Americans, those who prefer to get their new online is growing. The number of people who prefer to get their local news online is also on the rise. Whether it be through social media, apps or websites, it has also been found that more Americans prefer these sources for their news versus print sources, like newspapers. It is no secret that newspapers have experienced layoffs, but digital-native news has not been immune and organizations like The Huffington Post and Buzzfeed have been affected as well. However, digital newsrooms have experienced an employee increase in the last ten years. With that being said, while people are turning to social media for news, majority of those people expect the news to be highly inaccurate. This brings about concerns for the digital news industry and their future. A study has shown that 52 percent of Americans have changed how they use social media and a large number have even stopped following a news source because of the concern.

I have been told not to jump in alone because I’m not the best swimmer and tend to sink strait to the bottom! Some people seem to think I need constant attention, but I just want to be the center of it. Is your pet TCM’s next Pet of the Month? Send a photo and short story with why you think

few weeks ago, I was just finishing up a long workday when I got a text message from a good friend inviting me out for a drink. I didn’t hesitate in accepting his offer—a drink is exactly what I needed. Although I would have been happy with any of our usual watering holes, my buddy was eager to try out a new cocktail lounge downtown called the Berkeley. I ordered up an Uber and was on my way.

Upon arriving, I was surprised to find that there was a line outside of this new establishment—a rarity in our beloved El Paso. Impatient to get the weekend started, I suggested we go somewhere else, but my friend was intent on seeing what all the hype was about. Slightly annoyed, I agreed to queue up … which I’m glad I did. Even with an ever-growing number of cool bars, the Berkeley manages to bring something new to the table. Co-owner Lawrence Davenport explained the concept, saying: “[We wanted to do] something

Tikka Masala

hicken Tikka Masala is one of my favorite classic Indian dishes—it’s super easy to make, and in my opinion, the best intro to Indian flavors there is. A creamy but spicy tomato sauce with charred

chicken on top of fluffy rice, it’s a great winter dish that brings warm tones and colors that will leave your house smelling amazing. You can cook the chicken in this dish any way you please, I do prefer grilling or broiling, since the chicken will be finished in the tomato sauce, getting those crispy burned edges on the chicken adds an extra layer of flavor and texture to this sauce heavy dish. Most things you may already have in your pantry so don’t feel like this is a stretch to make, the main thing needed to get that classic flavor will be a spice called garam masala. Garam masala is basically a mixture of roasted and ground up spices that make up a subtle sweet and savory coating guaranteed to bring classic

1 Aesop | Seeking Silence Facial Hydrator I don’t know about you, but if your skin is anything like mine, it doesn’t take too kindly to changing climates. I know this because as soon as the air becomes the slightest bit drier or cooler, the propensity to irritation comes in full-effect. Before I know it, I have red splotches all over my face. Luckily, this moisturizer is packed full of anti-inflammatory ingredients designed to reduce redness and discomfort. The mild woody scent adds to the whole experience, to soothe not only your skin but also your senses.

$60 | Aesop.com

2 Bulldog | Original Body Wash I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again, bergamot is my favorite fragrance OF. ALL. TIME. So, naturally, anything containing the ingredient merits a trial from me. Not only is this body wash super affordable, but the gentle, moisturizing effect it has helps your skin hold on to natural oils that it would otherwise lose to more conventional washes (even some that claim to be moisturizing). Who cares if citrus scents aren’t “appropriate” for winter. I say, if you like a certain smell, wear it year-round. We love a signature.

3 Dr. Dennis Gross | Clinical Grade IPD Dark Spot Correcting Serum

Graber/Bali Mechoshades Swf Contract Vertilux

Initially introduced to Dr. Dennis Gross through their daily peel wipes, I knew that they weren’t here to play games. When they say skincare, they really mean it. Now to what I would rarely and very intentionally call a “Holy Grail.” I’ll let you in on a little secret, I have very acne prone skin, and when I do break out, the hyperpigmentation that follows is no joke. Fortunately, this serum pushes its way through those tough-to-get-rid-of spots to even out and reveal a radiant complexion. Results are often visible after only a couple of weeks. Take before and after pictures and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

of the skin. This we know, however, one of the first signs of any of these factors manifest themselves in the under-eye area. Special steps need to be taken in order to maintain the full, bright and healthy appearance of this very delicate bit of skin. The eye area is very sensitive to heavy moisturizers, especially those that tend to travel on the surface of the skin instead of absorbing as quickly as they should. That’s why this ophthalmologist-tested eye cream is a great solution for those under-eyes that just need a little bit of love.

Budapest A Triumph of Historical Proportion | By: MARIE MOORE photography by: ALAN MOORE |

History has not always been kind to Hungary, but the city of Budapest has endured. There is lots to do and learn here and the price of meals and accommodation can be quite low (buy open-faced caviar, sausage or vegetarian sandwiches for 1 Euro at Duran Szendvics CafÊ) so don’t rush. Five days are enough to fall in love with Budapest. 164

Lipizzan horses were the real stars of our Puszta Tour. First, beautifully preserved Art Nouveau architecture in Kecskemet’s town center. Next, a three-course lunch with amazing Hungarian specialties served with live classical music and more Palinka!
