Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Receive Causeways “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Program By Erick Rommel and Kaitlyn Strohmeier With the celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary concluded, we continue with a new yearlong campaign – “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County. At the end of 2019, Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local non-profit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up last year’s 50th Anniversary Grant program. Anchoring this campaign is the “CauseWheels” Vehicle donation Program, through which Causeway will award a used vehicle to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from February through December of 2020. Due to Covid-19 we had to postpone our April and May winners. To recap, our February winner was Main Street Alliance Church, March - 21 Plus, Inc., June - Interfaith and Support Services, July – St. Theresa’s Food Pantry, August – Ocean Community Church and September – Potter’s Pantry. We are proud to announce our October Winner, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore! Who are the Girl Scouts? They’re 2.5 million strong— more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adults who believe in the

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore consists of approximately ten thousand girls!

Girls were able to attend Camp Amity Acres in Waretown this past summer, participating in various outdoor activities including swimming and water play, boating, arts and crafts, and archery. They also had the unique opportunity to earn Girl Scout badges thanks to the implementation of COVID health and safety guidelines from the American Camp Association and the CDC.

Adapting To A Pandemic Now more than ever, girls need to feel a sense of connection. The isolation caused by the COVID pandemic threatens girls’ mental health. The camaraderie and friendships they find as Girl Scouts play an essential part in helping them find the routine they crave and need. Through Girl Scouts, their resiliency is strengthened by the friendships they build, the leadership skills they gain, and the experiences they share as they work together to improve their communities.

BARNEGAT SCHOOLS MOVING TO 5 DAYS IN-PERSON NEXT MONTH BARNEGAT, NJ — Barnegat is moving toward more in-person schooling. The Barnegat Township School District will allow students to learn in school five days per week beginning Nov. 16 — albeit half days. The district sent a survey to the school community about Phase 2 of reopening. According to Dr. Brian Latwis, 62.4 percent of households want five-day, inperson learning; 17.8 percent want a full virtual option; and 19.6 percent want to continue with the hybrid model. The district’s goal is to bring in more students for in-person learning in a safe manner, according to Superintendent Dr. Brian Latwis. But for the time being, Barnegat schools will have to begin with half days. “Unfortunately, at this time full-day instruction with approximately 80% of the student body in school is not possible due to safety concerns surrounding student lunch and recess at the elementary level,” Latwis wrote Tuesday to parents and guardians. “However, as a district we will continue to

look for viable solutions to overcome these roadblocks and return to normal, full-day instruction. For now, lunch will be grab and go at the end of the day.” The district developed the plan with the Ocean County Health Department and executive county superintendent. The Barnegat Board of Education must approve the proposal. Courtesy of Patch.com

BATTERING RAMS: 2020 SOUTHERN REGIONAL FOOTBALL PREVIEW

players could see time at the other cornerback spot and at safety.

By Bob Badders,

After playing in the Constitution Division last season with mostly Monmouth County teams, the Rams will play an allOcean County schedule that features many familiar rivals.

Southern finally broke free from mediocrity in 2019, snapping a six-year streak of non-winning seasons and claiming the program’s first division title since 2011. But even more important than the seven wins or the division banner was the fact that the Rams found an offensive identity.

“I think our team is capable of competing with this schedule this year,” Donohue said. “There are some tough games, but we’re excited to be back with an Ocean County schedule. It makes it fun playing these teams again.”

Not since making a run to the South Jersey Group 4 sectional final in 2012 when current Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki was on the team have the Rams been able to hang their hat on anything specific. That all changed last season when running back Jaiden Brown arrived. After transferring from Jackson Liberty prior to his sophomore year, Brown injected a much-needed jolt of energy into Southern by rushing for 1,242 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven 100-yard games en route to being a second-team All-Shore selection. Southern became a power running team and everything fell into place. The Rams can attack the 2020 season knowing full-well what they are, harkening back to the smashmouth days of Glenn Carson and Anthony Stroffolino when Southern reached its first sectional final in 2008. “We feel teams are going to have to stop the run in order to beat us, and we think we also have the speed and the athletes to keep teams honest,” said Southern head coach Chuck Donohue Sr. “We developed some receivers last season and we have some kids who can throw the ball and are also capable of running the ball at the quarterback position. In high school football and football in general now, the quarterback becomes such a factor when he can do both things. It changes everything.” The offensive line returns three starters in seniors Pat Fulginiti, and Conor Clineman, and junior Logan Doherty. Junior Nate Committee returns as a starting fullback and 6-foot-5 senior, Jay Silva, is back as a starting tight end. Senior Xavier Hendricks is a returning starter as a slot receiver and

senior Alex Rainone is also a returning starter at wideout. The quarterback position will feature a new starter as seniors Taylor Munt and Luke Bruther, as well as junior Nolan Schubiger are battling for the starting spot.

Southern’s defense was one of the best in the Shore last season, finishing 10th in scoring defense at 15.2 points per game. Six starters return in the Rams’ 4-4 scheme led by longtime defensive coordinator Matt Abbato, including a very strong unit of linebackers. The second level of the defense has Brown and senior Steve Langton as returning starters at inside linebacker and seniors JP Ricciardi and Hank Gallacher returning as the outside linebackers. Committee is a returning starter at defensive end and Silva will step in at the other defensive end spot. The Rams will have to replace both defensive tackles as standouts Seb Cervetto and Colby Saxton have graduated. The same group that will play along the offensive line will rotate in at defensive tackle to keep everybody fresh. Hendricks is a returning starter at cornerback while a host of

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Receives Causeways “CauseWheels” continued from page 1 For obvious reasons, this year was one of the most challenging for the Cookie Program, but also one of the most rewarding. COVID-19 shuttered the state at the start of Girl Scout Cookie booth sales. Even though businesses were closed and girls were at home, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore remained responsible for more than 100,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies that needed to be sold. It took six months, but all the cookies were sold and delivered in the community thanks to the council’s Cookie Relief Fund, an initiative that encouraged businesses and individuals to purchase cookies and donate them to essential workers, volunteers, nonprofits and other community organizations across central New Jersey. One healthcare worker who received a donated box of cookies called it a “Box of Love,” a phrase that drove home the difference Girl Scouts make in a time of need. OceanFirst Bank and Investors Bank led the charge. Each donated $50,000 to purchase Girl Scout Cookies. They, and many other local businesses, supported the campaign because they believe in our girls and Girl Scouts’ mission to make the world a better place. Nothing Stops Girl Scout Camp Another one of Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore’s proudest recent achievements came this summer when it found a way to implement COVID safety protocols at Camp Amity Acres in Waretown and Camp Sacajawea in Farmingdale. Camp activities were adapted while still allowing girls to be safely connected with nature and foster friendship in a fun and safe environment. “I’m proud we were able to deliver a summer camp program focused on engaging, outdoor activities,” said Eileen Higgins, chief executive officer, Girl Scouts of the

Jersey Shore. “During six weeks of programming at each camp we had no positive COVID tests and our campers participated in summer experiences they will never forget.” Camp activities included swimming and water play, boating, arts and crafts, and archery, as well as the unique opportunity to earn Girl Scout badges. “The camp has made a tremendous effort to keep camp fun but very safe during this uncertain time, said one camp parent. Another added, “My daughter was very happy to be at camp and even happier to be able to connect with her camp friends from previous summers.” It’s Time To Join Girl Scouts All girls in kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to join Girl Scouts at any time and financial assistance is available for families in need. As girls grow, so do the challenges they reach to overcome. Whether she’s inspired by the outdoors, building robots or community service, Girl Scouts has fun, exciting and age-appropriate activities for her. Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore serves nearly 10,000 girls ages 5-18 in Monmouth and Ocean counties, providing a time-tested leadership experience that inspires and motivates them to take action for themselves and their communities. For 108 years, Girl Scouts has helped girls become women of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. A RUN TO HELP AND AN IMPRESSIVE 25-YEAR RUN Kevin Williams, courtesy of wobm.com

If you’re a runner or just a walker than you can help out one of the shore’s most important charitable causes. The Causeway Family of Dealerships is inviting you to participate in their 3rd Annual Causeway Family 5K Run & Walk on Sunday, October 25 at Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin. All proceeds will be donated to Fulfill who some might remember as the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. They continue to fight hunger in our community and fulfill more of the needs of our neighbors. The Causeway Family through the first two years of this race has donated $22,000: $10,000 in the first year and $12,000 last year and the goal for upcoming race is $15,000. Registration is $30.00 and the first 250 to sign up will receive a free T-shirt plus there will be overall and age group awards as well as door prizes.

operating their martial arts gym from 5 p.m. -7 p.m. There will be a Playa Bowls Food Truck, face painting for the kids, 25 years of pictures to look at and it will be a nice way for many former and current students to get together.

In today’s challenging times, twenty-five years in business is certainly worth celebrating and that’s what they will be doing this Saturday at Tong Dragon Mixed Martial Arts in Bayville. Eric Colon and his wife Julie are hosting the event to mark a quarter-century of

Eric, by the way, is recognized as one of the top MMA judges and travels all over the world to work fights. Tong Dragon was one of the original mixed martial arts schools in the shore and state, and the public is invited to Saturday’s celebration.

Unrelated to either of these topics is the fact that my commitment to wearing shorts to work every day has ended. Not because of the weather but a lack of wardrobe and footwear as well as the fact my summer tan is all but gone. Sad news for sure. The good news is that I still have not worn socks and that will continue for a bit longer. Courtesy of wobm.com

HOW NJ RESIDENTS CAN SAVE ENERGY, MONEY IN WINTER 2020 The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities says you can save money and energy this winter.

refrigerators, water heaters and heating systems. The Comfort Partners program helps low-income residents in New Jersey reduce their utility bills by implementing cost-effective measures, at no cost to them, that save energy while improving a home’s comfort. Applicants may receive, at no cost, energy-efficient lighting products, water heater insulation, replacement refrigerators or other benefits.

To that end, it’s launched the “Lighting the Way to a Clean Energy Future” campaign. BPU President Joseph Fiordaliso said a lot of residents in the state who may be unemployed for the first time in the COVID-19 pandemic in their lives may not realize that there are programs to help them get by. Fiordaliso said in addition to taking advantage of assistance programs, consumers can call their utilities to set up payment plans. A state moratorium on utility shutoffs remains in effect, but Fiordaliso said he does not want to see ratepayers finding out they owe a lot of money once the moratorium passes. Fiordaliso said New Jersey has one of the most aggressive energy efficiency programs in the United States. The cheapest energy is the energy that’s not used. With winter coming and heating costs rising, that’s an important concept, he said. Energy saving can mean

Fiordaliso also said residents who live in an Urban Enterprise Zone may be eligible for bonus incentives for installing energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment. More on these programs and incentives is at something as simple as turning the thermostat down one njcleanenergy.com. “There’s nobody in the state of New Jersey that should degree. Putting in LED lights can help save money. Making sure windows are caulked properly so cold, winter air is not be put in the position — nobody- — where they have to decide whether to heat the home or eat. That’s not what seeping through helps as well. Fiordaliso said residents can receive rebates when they New Jersey is about. That’s not what America is about,” Courtesy of wobm.com

FALL 2020

GET YOUR FLU SHOT, NJ

9

IN MOST CASES THIS YEAR, IT WILL BE FREE David Matthau, courtesy of wobm.com With the number of COVID-19 cases on the rise as the flu season gets underway, the state Health Department is ramping up efforts to encourage people to get a flu vaccine. And do it as soon as possible. Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said just about everyone over the age of 6 months should get a vaccine before the end of the year. “Most of our pharmacies are vaccinating pretty aggressively. Our primary care physicians (as well). I know that we are receiving 440,000 additional doses of flu vaccine this year,” she said. Those doses are for a federally funded program that provides free flu shots to New Jersey adults. Normally the free vaccines are for those in lower-income households that are underinsured or uninsured. But this year the CDC has waived eligibility requirements and made the flu shots available to everyone. Walgreens, for example, says the flu shot — which they

provide through appointment or walk-ins — should be no cost to most customers with their insurance. The New Jersey Vaccines for Children program, also federally funded, provides free flu shots for children in low-income families with little or no insurance. Last year, the program vaccinated 347,000 children. This year there will be 434,000 vaccines available. Typically, these vaccinations are given out by federally qualified health centers, local health departments or nonprofit agencies. Persichilli stressed that all New Jersey residents should get vaccinated for influenza. The state’s goal is to vaccinate 70% of the population by the end of the year. “A year ago we had a little bit less than 50% of individuals in New Jersey that got vaccinated for the flu,” she said. “Within that 50%, 73% were children.” She said part of the reason why flu shots are so important this year, when the COVID pandemic is still in our midst,

is to help preserve bed space in hospitals that every year get used by serious cases of the flu. Persichilli said many intensive-case flu patients also wind up going on ventilators. “We need to preserve all of that, so the sooner you get vaccinated and build up that immunity, the better off we’ll be overall so that we don’t experience what is now being called a twindemic,” she said last week.

CORONAVIRUS HOSPITALIZATIONS LOW AT SOUTHERN OCEAN MEDICAL CENTER Inpatient numbers are low despite a spike in Ocean County cases. Health officials said several reasons could contribute. and Stafford but did not provide specific numbers.

By Josh Bakan, Patch Staff MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Despite a recent spike in Ocean County coronavirus, there aren’t many patients with the virus at Southern Ocean Medical Center. In fact, the hospital only has one COVID-19 inpatient, a spokesperson told Patch on Tuesday afternoon.

Hospitalization totals have gradually decreased around the state since New Jersey’s coronavirus outbreak peaked last spring. State officials reported 6,127 patients getting treated at hospitals April 29. That figure totaled 591 as of Tuesday.

Ocean County reported 2,241 new cases from Sept. 21 through Tuesday, bringing the area to 14,456 cases since the pandemic began. The Ocean County Health Department reported 108 new cases Sept. 11 — its first triple-digit day since May 27 — and has logged several triple-digit days since.

It’s difficult to gather local hospitalization trends based off publicly available data. The state reports current hospitalized patients regionally. The Health Department places Ocean County in the “Central Region,” which has gone from 1,793 inpatients April 29 to 180 Tuesday.

Despite this, there are several factors that could contribute to fewer hospitalizations in Southern Ocean, such as greater knowledge of the virus and more effective treatments, according to health officials. “We’ve also been seeing many COVID-19 cases of the mild to moderate type in which people are recovering in a few days and not needing the longterm

care,” said OCHD spokesperson Brian Lippai. Concerns from state officials regarding Ocean County have also centered outside the southern area. The bulk of the new cases have been in Lakewood, which had a positivity rate of 27.82, State Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said Friday. She also said that cases have spiked in Jackson, Lacey

Despite fewer hospitalizations, local health officials said people still need to be vigilant. “We still aren’t out of the woods,” Lippai said, “and people need to continue to take the pandemic very seriously and adhere to all safety precautions especially as we head into the heart of the flu season combined with the holiday season.” Courtesy of patch.com

2021 HONDA ODYSSEY EARNS IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ RATING

The 2021 Honda Odyssey has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest accolade, the 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating. It is the first minivan to be awarded with a 2020 TSP+ rating and the only minivan to earn a top rating for ease of use of its LATCH child seat attachment hardware. Further, Odyssey’s standard front crash prevention system earned “Superior” ratings from the Institute in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicleto-pedestrian avoidance tests. With this award, a combined seven Honda models have earned 2020 TSP ratings or better.

Keeping Assist System (LKAS); and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). All Honda vehicles also benefit from Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, designed to protect occupants in a wide variety of frontal collisions, along with advanced supplemental restraint systems. To qualify for a 2020 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, a vehicle must earn good ratings in six crashworthiness evaluations, including the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also needs advanced or superior ratings for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention, as well as acceptable or good headlight ratings across all trim levels.

For the 2021 model year, all Odyssey models provide Honda Sensing® as standard equipment on all trim levels. Honda Sensing® is now available or standard on every Honda automobile model, and there are more than 3.5 million Honda vehicles on U.S. roads today featuring this comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) with Pedestrian Detection; Forward Collision Warning; Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) incorporating Lane Departure Warning (LDW); Lane
