CAUSEWAY’S OWN, TRUCK MEET FOUNDER

By Kaitlyn Strohmeier, Causeway with excerpts from Dubmagazine.com As you may have noticed in the past few issues of the Causeway Gazette, we had advertised for the first ever Atlantic City Truck Meet. This event was truly exciting for us because our very own Christopher Varner of Causeway is co-founder of this meet. The first annual show took place on July 17th and 18th in Atlantic City. We’re happy to announce that this event was a hit, with 2,000 vehicles in attendance and 14,000 spectators in total! The Atlantic City Truck Meet is put on by Mark Wickline, Christopher Varner and John Klebaur. The three friends came up with the event after they realized that the Northeast was truly an untapped market in the truck show industry. Mark had stated, “You see all the shows out west and down South, but there wasn’t a true truck show to the caliber we felt needed to be.” So after months of kicking

it around, another truck show in the area canceled their event indefinitely and they felt like that was their opportunity to announce an event. The first annual show was supposed to be in July of 2020, but because of COVID-19 and state guidelines, the meet had to be postponed until this year. On June 25th, the 2019 Atlantic City Truck Meet was

announced officially. There was no venue, no dates, or anything set in stone. But the one thing they did have were sponsors, thanks to John Ramos and Myles Kovacs at TIS Wheels. With one year to put on the show, the team hit the ground running. Each had their own role in making the show a reality, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen so they had a whole extra year to perfect the details. “It was two years in the making, but it was well worth it,” Mark said. This event brought in some significant vendors and booths including: TIS Wheels, Versa Tyre, Renegade Products, BAMF LED Offroad Lighting, Skoop & Nikki of SMG, Tobin’s Detailing, American Force Wheels, Forgiato Wheels, Fury Tires, Black Red Headwear, Liberty Forged, Diamond Mobile Detailing, Zephyr Polishes and many more. They had local favorite DJ Meatball (Chris Varner’s brother), a professionally built Sand Castle for photo ops, 15 food trucks and a beer garden. Mark boasts that people are extremely happy with the event. “We have gotten so much good feedback from sponsors, vendors, participants and spectators. Some people have suggested things to add or change and we are taking everything into serious consideration for next year.”

We sat with Chris and asked him: What inspired you to co-create this event? “The lack of bigger truck shows in the North East. It was an untapped market.” What vehicle did you build for this event?

I had the pleasure of meeting Author, Speaker and Tower Runner Sally Kalksma! (Special thanks to Rick Galgano for introducing us). Sally is one courageous woman whose story is not only inspiring, but puts life into a whole new perspective. Sally wrote her book, Life Gets in the Way, not only to tell her story but to help others develop grit, find inspiration in the obstacles life throws our way and the joy that transpires when overcoming them. Without giving away her whole story, here is an excerpt from her book. Just from this quote alone you can get a feel of how inspiring, motivated and resilient Sally is! “Just like the three words I love you can change your life, so can the three words you have cancer. And those three words certainly did change my life, but not for the worse. If I wanted to beat cancer, I would have to make tactical changes in my life. Cancer is a war made up of a series of battles –some you win, some you lose. However, my goal was to win the war, and in order to win the war, I had to be strategic. I had to prepare on all fronts. I had to get in the best shape of my life, physically and mentally, just like I would for a race. After my cancer diagnosis, I vowed I was going to live by Pete’s motto: ‘Cancer may take years from my life, but I won’t let it take the life from my years’. And that is what we both did.” Sally wrote this book to help others. She took a bad situation and made it better. Sally used her cancer diagnosis to raise money for cancer research by climbing tall buildings. As more adversity hit, she climbed harder. Sally believes “It is better to give back than it is to give up!” As mentioned before, Sally is a Tower Runner! As a way to manage the stress, Sally started running up the stairs during her lunch break. This activity became more official as she transitioned into competitive stair climbing. She began channeling all of her energy raising money for charities with this new sport. Over the years Sally has raised over $110,000 for charities including the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). All the while, rising in the rankings for the tower runs to 5th in the United States and 20th overall in the world. But as her rankings improved, her cancer worsened, and she needed to start treatment in 2016. After a year of treatment, Sally underwent an autologous stem cell transplant in 2017. Life Gets in the Way is now a #1 bestseller on Amazon in the following five categories: • Cancer • Diseases & Physical Ailments • Women's Health • Women's Spiritual Growth • Motivational Self Help It also sold out at Barnes & Noble within 2 days of being released! When purchasing Sally’s book Life Gets

in the Way, just know you are helping those living with Multiple Myeloma! Sally has pledged that a portion of the book sales go to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. You may be wondering, how’s Sally and what has she been up to? The answer is nothing but great news. Sally is in remission. She has been on Chemo for the past five years, and takes it every other night. She is currently in the final stages of her audio book and hopes to complete this project by the end of this August. For those of you who’d rather listen then read, keep an eye out for it! Even more exciting, she has a future project that is near and dear to her. She dropped some hints that this project will help hospital patient’s look and feel better. We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes her! To read more about Sally Kalksma, please visit her website: www.sallykalksma.com To purchase your very own copy of “Life Gets in the Way”, please visit: www. sallykalksma.com/book (Available at Barnes & Noble, NOOK, Amazon, Kindle and check out Indiebound.org for local retailers.) Sally will be at The Little Point Bookshop in Point Pleasant Beach on Wednesday, August 25th from 6pm- 7pm signing copies of her book, Life Gets in the Way. NJ RESIDENTS ADVISED TO PUT TOGETHER A TORNADO EMERGENCY PLAN By David Matthau

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management is recommending all Garden State residents immediately put together a tornado emergency plan.

She said you should also develop and finalize a communication plan “in case you need to evacuate.” Connolly said tornados strike quickly and very often you don’t have much time to do anything except flee for your life. Across the nation, tornados will cause 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries a year, according to the National Weather Service. She said it’s important to make sure you’ve got updated phone numbers and work or school addresses for all family members and you should also decide on an emergency meet up location. She recommended you pick spots “inside

Five tornados touched down in New Jersey recently, damaging dozens of homes. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured or killed.

Laura Connolly, a public information officer for the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, said this means “build a kit, an emergency kit for your home if you have to shelter in place, include a Go Bag in case you need to leave on short notice.”

Date: Sunday, October 10th 2021 Time: 9:00 AM (5K Start) of the town and outside the town so that if you have to reunite somewhere everyone knows where that meet up spot is in case cell phones aren’t working or texting isn’t working.”

Location: Southern Regional High School 90 Cedar Bridge Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050

She said if there’s a serious threat of a tornado and you’re in a building that doesn’t have a basement, it’s important to know what the best options are to stay safe.

And if you’re outside, “do not get under an overpass or bridge, you’re actually safer in a low flat location. And watch out for any debris that can cause injury. If you’re driving and a tornado warning is posted in your area, “do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle, if you are in a car or outdoors and cannot get to a building, cover your head and neck with your arms and cover your body with a coat if possible.”

WONDERFUL FRUITS BE BACK-TO-SCHOOL READY WITH OCEAN OF HARD LABOR! COUNTY LIBRARY’S EDUCATION INITIATIVE

By Danielle Natale, of Causeway Honda

This year as we headed into another Summer, I wanted to have the best vegetable garden I’d ever had. I figured with rising prices on produce that I would try to grow as much as possible. Many of you I’m sure have done the same and have had wonderful success and great savings. Personally, August has always been my garden clean up month. I like to clear out all crops past their peek and spread out the plants with longevity well past September. I’ve personally found that my pepper’s, potatoes and carrots are what bring me through the last two month’s of Summer. Then I prepare the

soil for lettuce and broccoli just before the cold Fall month’s. If you have never had an edible garden, please consider starting one next season! If you lack the space then container gardening is always a great space saver. If you just think you don’t have a green thumb, I guarantee that you do and you will succeed. Nothing tastes better than a meal made from organic food that you have worked so hard to grow. Happy planting everyone!

In only a few short weeks, Ocean County students return to their journeys of learning. Teachers, parents and caregivers will provide enlightenment and guidance. There is a world of resources for all in “Discover Ocean County Library: An Education Initiative.”

The ongoing initiative aims to place a library card in the hands of every student in Ocean County, and to provide physical and digital resources to teachers, students, parents, caregivers and families. OCL librarians can help educators

advance through professional development hours, and can provide in-class demonstrations of online resources that are available at no charge to Library card holders.

The newest addition to the initiative is the Educator Library Card. Teachers from Pre-K through Grade 12 who acquire the special card receive expanded access to Library resources and services. The Library’s Assignment Alert form allows instructors to notify their local branches of impending student visits for research purposes, and lets

librarians assemble the most suitable items in advance.

The Class Visit form can be used to arrange an in-class visit by a librarian, or a field trip to the nearest branch. Staffers offer tips for using the Library effectively, conduct book talks, demonstrate maker kits, explain online resources, and much more. To learn more about the Ocean County Library’s Education Initiative, visit https://theoceancountylibrary. org/education.

Fresh from the garden dinner! I picked an eggplant, yellow zucchini, basil, and tomatoes. I topped it all over whole wheat pasta with a sprinkle of feta.

Crystal is a 12 week old Dilute Calico female with beautiful green eyes who is in one of our foster homes. She has muted colors of grey, white, and tan and adorable little white mitted paws. She is very playful and loves to climb the cat tree and play with her kitty toys. She is a bit shy with new people but loves her foster Mom and likes to be held and petted. She would just need a little time to get used to loving a new family in a new home. She is spayed, has had age appropriate vaccinations, tested negative for fiv and felv and microchipped. If you would like to meet cute little Crystal, an application can be filled out on line at fosocas.org. Her foster Mom will arrange a meet and greet at Petsmart in Manahawkin. Meet Thor! A beautiful 10 year old gray and white neutered male Pitbull. Would you like an easy going companion who would be as loyal and loving as you could find? Well, we have that boy! Thor is a sweet boy, who can be a bit anxious in the shelter environment after so many years in his own home. Thor enjoys playing with squeaky toys, and knows a few commands including: sit, paw, and he comes when called! He may have some separation anxiety until he is confident and sure of his new home so he would do best with a family that understands his breed and has someone home a great deal of the time. He prefers a home without cats.

EVERYDAY SHOULD BE A DAY WHERE WE SHOW APPRECIATION FOR OUR ACTIVE MILITARY AND VETERANS By Vin Ebenau Memorial Day is the day where we honor and remember those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice so we can have the freedoms we do. Veterans Day is the day where we thank, honor and remember all military veterans for their service to our nation. Perhaps, it’s spending time with active military or veterans still with us, or paying a visit to their final resting place to pay respects and visit them to have conversations and pray, it’s one of the things I do when I visit my Grandfather, who was a U.S. Army Corporal during the Korean War, and Grandmother. I had a conversation though last year with John Dorrity, the Director of the Ocean County Veterans Services Bureau, a former Commander of the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers and the President of the

New Jersey Association of Veterans Service Officers. He’s also a Vietnam War veteran. We spoke on the challenges facing veterans still today but also what we can do as a society to show appreciation for those who serve and have served. One thing stuck out in particular. “What can people do to honor Veterans? We can think. We can tell them we appreciate what they did,” Dorrity told Townsquare Media News. “Everyday is Veterans Day to anyone who served in the military, every single day.” Contemplate that as you give a virtual salute to service to these military and veterans and then when you’re out and come in contact with an active military service member or veteran -- how will you show appreciation and honor them, how will you work to help veterans when they’re active service is done?

CYCLING PASSION LEADS TO GOOD CAUSE HELPING OTHERS WITH A HAMMER Starve Poverty was established about 25 years ago and started out of a burden that Ron Fraser (Founder and CEO) had after experiencing the extreme poverty of Mexico. After a couple of trips, Ron realized the language barrier was too great for him. Ron had then been invited to Exuma, Bahamas to teach courses in marriage and individual counseling.

Tracey Habich is a local from Tuckerton who has a passion for cycling and helping others. She is currently training for her 4th Team Foster ride which is coming up on September 11th. This ride is 100 miles long and starts off in Cherry Hill and ends in Cape May. Tracey unfortunately had a setback but with her father’s encouragement, she’s back in action with even more passion. “In 2006, I was training for my first century ride (100 miles). I had a routine wisdom tooth extraction that caused osteomyelitis in my vertebrae; my vertebrae from C3-T1 were removed and replaced with a donor fibula. I didn’t think I would ever ride a bike again. In 2016, with my father’s encouragement, and a lot of strength training, I decided to try to ride a bike again. In 2018, I had decided I wanted to ride a century again and looked for a ride that meant the most to me. I found the Team Foster ride; I was instantly in love with the cause and the story behind it. The opportunity to not only reach a life goal but to help our veteran’s receive the service dogs they needed was amazing. 100 percent of the donations that I raise will go to the cause; none of it was eaten up by administration or overhead. The ride to honor Erick Foster, who was killed in action, is an amazing experience, his family and friends are part of the ride, it is inspiring,” she said. Team Foster is committed to helping veterans. More than one in four Veterans suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Yet, neither the U.S. military nor the VA provide adequate resources for service dogs

He soon realized the economical struggle and the poverty on the island was far greater than just counseling. Ron soon changed his focus to “breaking the chains of poverty”. Ron has built a board and band of volunteers around him who supports and helps execute the vision of the organization. Ways to Help Help Tracey reach her goal of raising $1,500 dollars for Team Foster! Visit pledgereg.com/287477 and donate what you can. Even a simple share on Facebook will go a long way. Donations are accepted until September 30th. to partner with Veterans suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Did you know that it takes two years to fully train a service dog? The cost to train just one dog is upwards of $25,000. A service dog for PTSD/TBI is trained to interrupt a night terror, seek help during a medical or emotional emergency and retrieve items. There are a total of 100 riders which is split into groups of 20. Each group has two comfort vehicles that drive with them for the entirety of the ride. These vehicles carry their snacks, water and most importantly their bike mechanic. The riders take a quick rest every 20/25 miles. They also have the mechanic make sure their bikes are in good shape to continue the ride safely. The

fastest group completes this ride within four to five hours. Tracey’s group completes it in seven to eight hours. For the past three years this event raised approximately $100,000 each year! Tracey is a huge advocate for bike safety, especially helmet safety. She unfortunately has lost a family member due to a bike accident, in which a helmet could possibly have saved their life. This tragedy has made Tracey aware of how important it is to wear a helmet. Tracey now carries an extra helmet or two in her trunk and hands them out to children she sees not wearing one. She explains the importance of wearing a helmet, even if it’s just a quick ride around the block. Accidents happen!

He saw homes hit by hurricanes and wanted to help these people living in poverty. He focused on widows with young children who were desperate for help. A lot of these homes had no running water. He started with renovations and additions. Main focuses were kitchens and bathrooms. Not long after, Ron found himself helping those in need here in the States. He helps change the lives of people in David, Kentucky which is a Coal Mining town and here in New Jersey. While in Kentucky, Starve Poverty has renovated six homes. There are currently four homes in progress. Last year, Stave Poverty had fixed up a mobile home for a local in Little Egg Harbor. They are currently working on a home for Amanda, a new resident in Tuckerton. This month Starve Poverty will also be working on a new roof for a resident in Pinewood Estates.

In 2018 we put a roof on a new Children’s Shelter on an impoverished island in the Caribbean. Current Needs Thank you Donors for all that you do! We could not accomplish anything without your continued support. Below we have created a list of needs that the organization could use your assistance with. There are two ways to donate: 1. You can mail a check for one of the items listed or 2. You can donate the physical item itself. The list will let you know if the item can be used or if it needs to be new! Again we want to thank you for your support, “You Are Making A Difference”! Tow Vehicle: 4 wheel drive, 4x4, full size pick-up truck, New or Used. Portable Generator: At least 6500 watts, New or Used. Must be in operating condition. Circular Saw: 7 ¼ inch circular saw, New or Used. Must be in good operating order Starve Poverty is completely volunteer organized! To get involved, please call: 609-249-5392.

Our Mission: “Breaking the Chains of Poverty” Our Vision: The vision of Starve Poverty International is to “break the chains of poverty” by deploying people into specific communities to help meet humanitarian, educational, medical, social, and spiritual needs; targeting teams toward specific projects that benefit poverty-stricken individuals or groups in the United States or abroad. What’s been happening in New Jersey: Amanda and her family, who attend Bayside Chapel, have just moved to Tuckerton, where their new home does not yet have a first-floor bedroom, and the bathroom door is too narrow for her wheelchair. Right now her bed is in the living room! SPI will build a 16x20 addition on the back of her house, which the state of New Jersey will equip with a ramp, electric doors, and other access features.

We are expecting to see plans and a materials list any day now, at which time we will begin raising funds and scheduling construction. SPI has joined Barnegat Communities That Care (CTC), a coalition of organizations that serve the youth of Barnegat (as well as others). They soon put together a project where SPI volunteers are mentoring 7th and 8th grade students in the basics of construction. This was a great example of how the coalition works: Barnegat Community Garden Project supplied the project and raised funds for the materials, Barnegat Township supplied the land and the compost, Barnegat CTC worked with the schools to invite selected at-risk students, and we provided the equipment and the mentors! We helped the students build 4 beds in June and will help build a fence in August.

UPCOMING RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE IN BARNEGAT-MANAHAWKIN AREA The Red Cross is holding a blood drive in the Barnegat-Manahawkin area soon.

By PATCH Staff BARNEGAT-MANAHAWKIN, NJ — The Red Cross urged people to donate blood as wildfires and record-breaking heat drive donations down. A projected busy hurricane season will likely shrink donations even further. All types of blood donations are needed, but there is an especially large demand for Type O. The plea for donations comes at a time when the country is experiencing high demand for blood transfusions. Hospitals are treating a high number of traumatic injuries this summer. Organ transplants and elective surgeries also increased the urgent need for blood products. People who donate blood during August will receive a free four-month subscription to Apple Music (new subscribers only). Below is the info for a Red Cross blood drive coming up in the BarnegatManahawkin area in the next few weeks. 8/26/2021: 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., Beach Haven Moose Lodge 1575, 120 Route 72 (Manahawkin) People who have received a coronavirus vaccine can donate blood so long as they

are symptom-free, feeling well and can provide the vaccine manufacturer's name, according to the American Red Cross. There is no waiting period after getting a vaccine dose. In most states, donors need to be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health; some states allow 16-year-olds to donate with parental consent. Donors 18 years old and younger need to meet certain height and weight requirements. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive. Appointments can be made via the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, online, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

WHY WE’RE STILL STRUGGLING WITH SLEEP If the pandemic did a number on your slumber, you’re not alone. Here’s what experts recommend now

by Ronda Kaysen, AARP There were many nights last summer when Anne-Claire France did not sleep at all, her body exhausted but her mind alert, recounting the stresses of a life upended by the pandemic. Lying awake beside her sleeping husband in their Houston home, France, an experimental psychologist, tallied all that needed to be done at work to support doctors, nurses and administrators across the country. She worried about her brother, furloughed from his job. And she feared for her mother, 90, who was isolated in a continuing-care retirement community. France, 62, had long been what she described as a “fragile sleeper,” easily awakened by noise, movement or light, challenges that worsened with menopause. But until the coronavirus pandemic, she’d been able to manage it. Now her thoughts consumed her each night: Her brother needed her financial and emotional support. Her mother needed companionship beyond her twice-weekly visits to France’s home. France feared for her stepdaughter in Jersey City, New Jersey, near the epicenter of the pandemic at the time, and worried about how she could effectively do her job over Zoom, leading classes with more than 200 health care workers. “From my perspective it was just so massive,” France recalls.

Association. The culprits vary, including menopause, prostate conditions, and the aches and pains that can come with aging. What’s more, sleep quality also tends to diminish as we age, as melatonin production falls and circadian rhythms change. Add to the mix a pandemic that was particularly dangerous for older people and you have a recipe for doing a number on slumber.

“How could I possibly take care of all these people?” And so she lay there, night after night, exhausted but alert. Sleep issues track with the pandemic France is among the millions of Americans who have spent this past year tossing and turning. Some call it COVID-somnia, a sleeplessness brought by a collision of stressors. The pandemic has disrupted every corner of our lives, affecting our finances, our health and our emotional well-being, causing anxiety that can keep us up at night. With millions working and studying remotely, the lines between work and home have blurred, undoing routines that kept circadian rhythms intact. Even as the worldwide health crisis wanes, the sleep troubles that surfaced over the past year may persist, experts say. “We’ve never experienced stress like this in our lives — ever — and so our bodies don’t necessarily know how to handle it,” says Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. A study published in January in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine revealed a global surge of sleep problems as the pandemic shut communities down, with 58 percent of participants feeling unsatisfied with their sleep. By contrast, normally about 15 to 25

When COVID-19 itself is a factor

percent of Americans are affected by sleep issues, according to the study’s authors. Older Americans with chronic health conditions who experienced high levels of pandemic-related stress were particularly vulnerable to trouble, according to a March study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. Sleepingpill usage was up 20 percent since the start of the pandemic, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found. “Anxiety, depression, social isolation, stress is all associated with the pandemic as well as interruption in people’s sleepwake schedules,” says Clete A. Kushida, M.D., a neurologist and the medical director of Stanford University’s division of sleep medicine, whose clinics have been busy throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The problem at this stage, he notes, “is really multifactorial.” While some neurologists, psychologists and sleep coaches have noticed the pace of new

patients slowing as the pandemic wanes, others say their waiting rooms are still busy. Those who keep working from home may find this drawn-out schedule continues to rattle their circadian rhythms, while others may think that life has begun to resemble normal again but their sleep hasn’t caught up. Part of the reason, experts say, is that the longer sleep problems persist, the harder they can be to undo. “We’ve opened up this Pandora’s box with this change in our lifestyle,” says Ajay Sampat, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of neurology and sleep medicine at the University of California, Davis. “And that probably is not going to end when the virus goes away.” This may be particularly true for older Americans, who are vulnerable to sleep problems under normal conditions, with roughly half experiencing insomnia before the pandemic, according to the American Psychological

And there’s another wrinkle on the pillow: More than 32 million Americans have contracted COVID-19, and for many of them, complications from the disease itself may have affected their sleep. Jen Singer, 54, a writer in Red Bank, New Jersey, contracted the coronavirus in February 2020, before widespread testing was available. The disease triggered a rare inflammatory condition, sarcoidosis, that affected her heart. Singer, a cancer survivor, endured a nine-month course of steroids to treat it but ended up needing a pacemaker after experiencing heart failure. Pumped up on 40 milligrams a day of steroids to treat the sarcoidosis and try to reverse her heart failure, Singer could not sleep. “I would be up, sometimes for hours, at night,” she says. The high dosage of steroids “felt like being a kid hopped up on a lot of sugar at a birthday party all of the time.” She spent her nights reading books, painting her house and getting ahead with work. She also chronicled her treatment and

recovery on Facebook, sharing favorite songs and selfies as she painted late into the night and finding a community of people awake alongside her in the wee hours. Singer finished the course of steroids in April and is back to sleeping regularly, a new normal she calls “fantastic.” While she still wakes occasionally at night, anxious about her health and the future (“Who at 54 doesn’t?” she says), she takes such briefer bits of sleeplessness in stride. For France, the experimental psychologist in Houston, the weeks of insomnia turned into months. Although she was functioning during the day, her mind was foggy. “You develop anxiety about sleep,” she says. “It’s a vicious cycle.” Her doctor prescribed benzodiazepine, a class of drugs used for insomnia as well as anxiety and other conditions. But France did not want to take sleep aids. So in September she saw a cognitive behavioral therapist to help her settle her thoughts. In December she began working with Martin Reed, an insomnia coach based in Oregon, who gave her assignments, homework and lessons. Realizing that she needs just 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep a night, she now limits the time she spends in bed, waking every morning at 5 a.m. and turning in when she feels sleepy, not tired. France still has relapses of insomnia, she says, but she practices breathing and meditation exercises to settle back down. “I know that in a few days I’ll be back to sleeping well again.”

1. Banish the clock The clock may be sitting beside you, but it is not your friend. If you wake in the night, resist the urge to look at it. Instead, remind yourself that it is normal to wake during the night — we all do — and that you will fall back asleep. “One of the best things we can do is not worry or panic, because waking is a normal part of sleep,” says Martin Reed, an insomnia coach in Oregon. Instead, make sure you are comfortable. If you need to go to the bathroom, do that. As Helene A. Emsellem, M.D., the director of the Center for Sleep & Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase, Maryland, says, “Don’t argue with your bladder.” But on your way there, you want to avoid bright lights. If you cannot get to the toilet and back without turning one on, keep a pair of bluelight-blocking glasses on your bedside table and wear those to the bathroom. When you get back into bed, you want to feel comfortable, relaxed and free of intrusive thoughts. So, set up an environment that keeps those thoughts at bay. Try a headband or a pillow with an embedded speaker that plays relaxing music or a podcast or a TED talk that is only mildly interesting. “What you want the sound to do is cocoon you in your bed, in the dark, in a sleep-conducive environment,” Emsellem says. “Block out your environment and block out your inner thinking. If the thinking train is still going, you haven’t done enough to distract yourself.” 2. Get up and reset Give yourself about 20 minutes to drift back to sleep (guess the

Travel’s surge back toward normalcy is starting to look more precarious, with the extremely contagious delta variant’s spread, and its apparent ability to infect fully vaccinated individuals; though their symptoms tend to be far milder than those for unvaccinated people, they may be able to pass on the virus to others. The CDC still advises against travel unless you are fully vaccinated. If those who are unvaccinated do travel within the U.S., they should get tested for COVID-19 one to three days before departure and again three to five days after returning. They should stay home and selfquarantine for seven days after travel or 10 days if they don’t get tested at the conclusion of travel. There are a few things travelers should keep in mind: The TSA is asking travelers to use enhanced precautions during airport screening, including putting personal items such as wallets, phones and keys into carry-on bags instead of plastic bins, and staying 6 feet from others waiting in line. TSA officers are required to wear masks and gloves and to change gloves after a passenger pat-down, and travelers are required to wear masks as well. Fines for refusing to wear a mask can range from $250 for the first offense to $1,500 for repeat offenders.

time, don’t track it on the clock.) If you are still awake, get up and give your body a reset. Move to a different room in your home and find a relaxing activity to clear your mind. Read something that you find slightly boring but pleasurable, color in an adult coloring book, meditate or practice breathing exercises. Listen to a podcast, perhaps one you’ve already heard before. Michael J. Breus, a clinical psychologist and the author of The Power of When, suggests flipping through old photo albums to recall happier times. Return to bed when you feel sleepy or groggy, and not just tired. 3. Recognize changes in your body Most bouts of insomnia are temporary and will resolve without intervention. However, if yours persists for several weeks or longer, it could be a sign of a more serious health issue, like depression or sleep apnea, for which you may need professional help.

CORONAVIRUS AND TRAVEL: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

www.aarp.org

Passengers are allowed to bring liquid hand sanitizer in containers up to 12 ounces in carry-on bags; previously, liquids could be in containers no bigger than 3.4 ounces. And they are also allowed to board a flight with a driver’s license that expired beginning March 1, 2020, “to use it as acceptable ID at checkpoints for one year after expiration date, plus 60 days after the COVID-19 national emergency.” (Some people have been unable to renew their licenses because of the outbreak.) And note that you now have until May 3, 2023, before you’ll need a security-enhanced Real ID instead of a regular driver’s license in order to get through airport security. The deadline was recently delayed from Oct. 1, 2021.

On the Plane The CDC requires passengers and crew to wear masks while boarding and disembarking and during the flight. None of the airlines are still blocking middle seats to enable social distancing. While many airlines had stopped serving food and drinks during flights, some, such as Southwest and Delta, have begun to do so again, depending on the length of the flight. All of the major U.S. airlines have equipped their planes with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which remove at least 99.97 percent of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria and airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The CDC concurs, noting in its guidance for travel during the pandemic that “most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on flights because of how air circulates and is filtered on airplanes.” Cruising It’s really happening: Cruising is beginning to return to U.S. waters. The CDC recently clarified its requirements for big ships to cruise again, after a long hiatus during the pandemic. It asks them, for one, to undergo a test cruise before they sail to demonstrate their safety measures, unless they can prove that at least 95 percent of their passengers are fully vaccinated. Some passengers are still testing positive for COVID-19, however, including six passengers on a Royal Caribbean International cruise that departed from Nassau recently, four of whom were vaccinated; they were quarantined and evacuated from the ship. (Only one exhibited symptoms, and those were mild.) Most cruise lines are requiring that guests be vaccinated, with the exception of some cruises from Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis has outlawed vaccine mandates (though a federal judge has temporarily blocked that law, suggesting that it may be unconstitutional).

And Alaska is again open to big-ship cruising. Congress has approved the bypassing of longtime rules that required foreign-registered ships traveling between U.S. ports to stop in another country (in Alaska’s case, Canada, which has banned large cruise ships through November of this year). With the rule change, many of the big lines have begun cruising to Alaska, with COVID-19 vaccination requirements for passengers.

LATEST TRAVEL UPDATES • As the delta variant spreads and vaccination rates slow, some areas of the country reinstate restrictions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that individuals who live in or visit areas of substantial or high COVID-19 transmission — which is currently most of the country — should wear masks in public indoor settings regardless of vaccination status. Los Angeles County, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., are among the jurisdictions that are again requiring everyone to wear masks in indoor public areas. Chicago has reinstated its COVID-19 testing requirement for visitors from now dozens of states that have passed the daily mark of 15 cases per 100,000 residents. Hawaii has reinstated capacity restrictions in restaurants and bars. Disneyland and Walt Disney World are again requiring face masks to be worn indoors.

quarantine upon arrival. But the CDC has raised its warning for Britain to level 4 — “avoid travel to this destination.” Due to high levels of COVID-19 there, the warning says, “even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.” The State Department also now says, “Do not travel to the United Kingdom due to COVID-19.” (You are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second dose of either the PfizerBioNTech or the Moderna vaccine, or the onedose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.) • The CDC continues to revise its travel recommendations for countries around the world. The agency had lowered the COVID-19related warning levels for some popular tourist destinations but has now begun to raise its warnings back to level 4 for many countries — “do not travel” due to very high COVID-19 rates — including Great Britain (as noted above), France and Iceland. Countries including Italy and Mexico are at level 3 (high COVID-19 rates); Germany and Canada are at level 2 (moderate COVID-19 rates). Note that for both levels 2 (Germany) and 3 (Italy), the CDC’s advice is the same: Make sure you are fully vaccinated before traveling to these destinations.

• More destinations are requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Beginning on Aug. 13, New York City will begin mandating proof of full vaccination from customers who want to eat indoors at a restaurant, work out in a gym or attend a show. Some New York City hotels, including the Equinox and Ian Schrager’s Public Hotel, are beginning to announce their own vaccine requirements. Big cruise ships (those with more than 100 passengers) can return to Canadian waters beginning Nov. 1, following a long pandemic ban. This is sooner than expected; Canada had previously suggested the ban would last until February. • The CDC lowered its warning level for cruising from level 4 (COVID-19 risk is very high) to level 3 (COVID-19 risk is high). It has also stopped explicitly warning those who are fully vaccinated against cruise travel. The CDC

still recommends that those who are not fully vaccinated avoid travel on cruise ships. It also says that even those who are fully vaccinated should get a COVID-19 viral test one to three days before departure, and that everyone on a cruise ship should wear a mask in public spaces. Many cruise lines have mask and vaccine requirements. (See below for more information.) • Testing is required for return to the U.S. In order to board a flight to the U.S., both visitors and American citizens must provide documentation of a negative viral test taken within three days of their departure or provide proof that they have recovered from COVID-19. Those who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine when they return to the U.S. from international locations, but they should get tested for COVID-19 three to five days after arriving back in the U.S. and watch for symptoms, according to the CDC. • Masks still need to be worn on public transportation. The CDC still requires all travelers to wear face coverings on airplanes, buses and rail systems, as well as in airports and bus and train stations.

HEARTS OF MERCY BORN OUT OF COMPASSION

While walking through one of the neighborhoods in her town, Kristen was saddened by the sight of needy children in her community. When she started to connect with them, she learned that many of them lacked direction and hope for the future. These kids have fallen through the cracks. This downhill slide seems to speed up as soon as the kids enter middle school. Kristen was moved by compassion and decided to take action. She collaborated with friends and neighbors and local businesses who shared her concerns. As a result, Hearts of Mercy was born.

Hearts of Mercy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, serves as an advocate for low income families that are living in need, providing programs, events, and assistance to families and kids in Barnegat and surrounding communities. Our first outreach was at the Barnegat Motel where we supplied food, diapers, and school supplies to the residents. Since its inception, Hearts of Mercy has provided kids with a host of activities to keep them busy and involved during the summer months, including an overnight camping trip, a trip to the BlueClaws to meet the players, a backpack giveaway, pool party and a fishing event on LBI. In November and December of last year, we worked with the Elks Club, the Lions Club, Southern regional Middle School’s Leo Club, Stafford Women’s Club and the Hibernians, to supply Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas gifts for the kids and their families. We handed out warm jammies, hats, scarves and gloves to secure warmth for our sweet kids. We weren’t able to have our annual Christmas Party indoors, but that didn’t stop us. We warmed up with hot cocoa, dancing, and were entertained by the beautiful voice of Jakki Gioia, one of our talented volunteers.

with the local school district to institute an after school tutoring program. Many gifted and talented volunteers joined our team to assist with this afterschool program. We are so thankful to have incredible people join our initiative to care for these kids. Initially, we met at the Barnegat Library; however, covid-19 restrictions made this impossible. As kids met the challenge of virtual school and we transitioned to online tutoring, we equipped our volunteers to adequately monitor student progress and academic growth in each session through a new database to enhance our record keeping.

musicians. Mark Santorelli provided the electric power. Lots of gifts were distributed and several new bikes were raffled off.

This year we partnered with Main Street Alliance Church in Manahawkin. The church provided HOM with an office as well as classrooms for our tutoring and mentoring program. Since many of our kids don’t have transportation, the church has also provided their van, donated by Causeway of Manahawkin, to transport kids to the twice weekly tutoring session as well as Main Street’s Friday night youth group.

Many of exciting events are on the horizon. On Thursday, September 2, 2021, we’re hosting our first Inaugural Golf Invitation at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood. For more information and to purchase tickets go to our website hearts-of-mercy.org. On Wednesday, October 13, beginning at noon, we are holding a fundraiser at the Breakers Restaurant in Waretown, NJ.

On June 12, HOM welcomed summer with the “Party in the Park” debut. It was a beautiful, fun packed day with sizzling hamburgers and hot dogs cooked to perfection by Mike Mercadante, the Director of the Board, along with yummy donuts provided by Wawa. Music was provided by Pastor Nate Bock of Main Street Alliance Church and members of the youth group as well as several local

Many of the kids struggle in school. To help them improve and meet their full potential, Hearts of Mercy collaborated

To teach our kids to protect the environment and understand the cycle of life we’ve built a Monarch Waystation at Meadowedge Park on East Bay Avenue in Barnegat. The kids will learn to maintain the milkweed garden while watching the amazing process of watching the tiny eggs become caterpillars and then exquisite butterflies. For you nature lovers, come take a look!

SEPTEMBER IS OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Turn The Towns Teal® whose mission is to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, its often subtle symptoms and risk factors, launches its 15th Annual National Campaign.

EVERY woman is at risk of developing ovarian cancer. This campaign is critical as there is NO conclusive early detection test; so knowing the subtle symptoms and risk factors can literally save a woman’s life. If detected in its early stages, the success rate is 90-95%. Turn The Towns Teal® started with 20 towns in NJ. To date, we have been represented in all 50 states, and literally thousands of women, men and children throughout the USA have participated. The campaign’s success proves its importance. Our volunteers tie our Teal ribbons, distribute symptom cards, lawn signs, our brochures, etc., and many wear our Turn The Towns Teal t-shirts as well as sport our hats (all made in the USA!). All these materials alert women AND men about this disease. This is a 3-Tiered Campaign:

Volunteers 1) “Teal” their town(s), 2) “Teal” their neighborhoods, businesses, places of worship, etc. and/ or 3) “Teal” their personal homes. Turn The Towns Teal® was the inspiration of Gail MacNeil (Chatham, NJ 1943-2008). Teal is the color associated with Ovarian Cancer, and it was Gail who came up with the clever, alliterative title Turn the Towns Teal and laid the foundation of the entire campaign. She knew all too well that there was not enough known about this cancer, its symptoms and risk factors, and she wanted to spare others what she and her family endured. “Awareness is our primary mission; however, there are other important aspects of the campaign. Our survivors now feel that their disease is finally being recognized, and they also want to educate the public. Additionally, those who have lost someone to ovarian cancer find it cathartic to continue the campaign in honor of their loved one. We KNOW for a fact that this campaign has saved women’s lives”, states Jane MacNeil, now President of the Campaign.

Hearts of Mercy wants our community to thrive. We are seeking volunteers to act as tutors, mentors, reading buddies, and van drivers. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Kristen Santorelli at 908-7830269 or kristen@hearts-of-mercy.org. If you would like to learn more about us or drop off a donation, you can also stop in at our office Monday through Friday at Main Street Alliance Church, 1000 Main Street, Manahawkin.

HYUNDAI’S TUCSON EARNS HIGHEST SAFETY RATING TSP+ BY IIHS Courtesy of Hyundai

Hyundai’s best-selling SUV, the Tucson has been awarded a 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) designation for 2022 model year from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Tucson was recognized for its structural crashworthiness, LED headlights and standard SmartSense crash prevention features. It joins two Hyundai siblings, the 2021 Palisade and NEXO which also earned TSP+. The Hyundai and Genesis 2021 and 2022 product lineups include 14 IIHS TSP or TSP+ safety ratings. In its quest for ‘safety first’ priorities, Hyundai remains a top-contender in automotive safety technology. “Hyundai’s commitment to ‘safety first’ is our highest priority,” said Brian Latouf, chief safety officer, Hyundai Motor North America. “We are extremely proud of the 2022 Tucson’s recent TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating and continuing Hyundai’s industry leadership in IIHS awards. Our commitment to safety is paramount.”

SUSTAIN AND SERVE GRANT

A NEED WE FEED RECEIVES A GRANT FROM NJEDA On March 8, 2021 we began providing meals to our community’s veterans, seniors, elementary school children, families and the homeless. Between March 8th and June 25th we were able to provide 19,550 meals! This was a unique grant as it not only provided meals to those in need, but it provided much needed support to local small business restaurants. We were very fortunate to have worked with restaurants that made the commitment to prepare meals by the hundreds and then deliver them to those in need over a 20 week period. Due to this grant, we were able to provide meals to many veterans from the American Legion Post 129 and the Salvation Army Ocean County Citadel. Elementary students at Hugh J. Boyd in Seaside Heights and families with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Seeds of Service, True Vine Ministries & Community Center and Family Promise in West Creek. We were also able to provide meals to our community’s homeless with Just Believe and homeless in Toms River and Lakewood.

As many seniors continue to be home bound due to concerns from the pandemic we partnered with the Toms River Municipal Alliance at the Senior Center and provided them with meals to distribute to these seniors. This grant allowed meals to be provided from local small business restaurant such as Bum Rogers Crabhouse in Seaside Park, Burger 25, Capone’s, Ryan’s Catering and Wings and Things all in Toms River. Three B’s Bar & Bistro in Lakehurst, Fusaro’s

Pizza in Manahawkin, Maruca’s in Seaside Heights and Mulligans Restaurant & Grill in Farmingdale. As this grant has come to an end; we continue to provide meals on a weekly basis. Your support of our upcoming Chef’s Tasting on the Bay Sunday, October 3rd 12:00 to 4:00 pm at Martells’ Waters Edge in Bayville, will help us continue to meet the need in our community. For tickets or questions call 609-316-7572.
