Lent Term 2012 | Cambridge Union

Page 1

President’s Welcome Welcome back to Cambridge for another term, and it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Lent 2012 at the Union. We’ve done everything we can to produce a termcard we hope you will find stimulating, exciting, fun and varied – from economics and politics through science to culture and the arts we have tried to offer the broadest spectrum of events yet to ensure that there is something for everyone. We’ll be debating some classic issues such as the legalisation of euthanasia, the place of the judiciary in society, and the life of women in the workplace, as well as some of the world’s frontpage topics like the Arab Spring and the future for the British economy. Be sure to come along in Week 5 to see a cast of ex-Footlights, all now professional comedians, take each other on in a bid to make you laugh as the stresses of term all get a bit much. For our individual speakers expect a range of famous, inspirational and fascinating people – have your politics questions answered by David Miliband, quiz Professor Lord Robert Winston on life, the universe and everything, hear Stephen Sondheim’s thoughts on theatre, ask Jerry Springer about just where he finds the people who feature on his shows and get Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s perspective on the global economic climate. Beyond speakers and debates, our forums will tackle same-sex marriage, this summer’s London riots and the War on Terror 10 years on, and we even have a film premiere, Acts of Godfrey, followed by a Q&A with the star, Simon Callow. Social events this term will be exceptional as always: we’ve overhauled the pub quiz; yoga, cocktail workshops and Zumba will continue; and with a regular Friday night slot for anything from Chinese New Year to DENIM to karaoke, the Union is the perfect place to relax or to party. Our cocktail menu remains excellent and our prices are still brilliantly cheap, so make sure you make the most of it! We will also be hosting a Masquerade Ball, so get yourself a ticket and find a mask for an incredible evening of the best food, drink and ents imaginable. If you’re not yet a member, do make the most of our Open Period (details on page 6) and remember to join before the price increase on the 1st of February! All the very best for a fabulous Lent term and I hope to see you soon,

Katie Lam President, Lent 2012 3

Debating at the Union The Cambridge Union Society has been debating the key issues of the day since 1815. Come along this term to see experts in their fields discuss a wide range of issues from fashion to feminism, economics to euthanasia and Conservatism to the courtroom – have a flick through to see which subjects catch your eye. Whilst we do everything we can to bring in top speakers on these subjects, the point of debates is not just to listen, but to get involved and be heard. Between the 4th and 5th speaker there is always a round of ‘floor speeches’, giving any member of the audience a minute to speak in proposition (agreeing with the motion), opposition (disagreeing with the motion) or abstention (feeling the debate thus far has not adequately addressed the issue such that they feel unable to vote either way). Anyone can also make a point during a speech by raising their hand and saying ‘Point of Information’; if the speaker chooses to accept your point, you have 30 seconds to explain your problem with their argument. Please do get stuck in and don’t let anyone get away with a point without a challenge!

Getting Involved The Union is run by students, for students: we rely on a team of enthusiastic volunteers to continue putting on amazing debates, speaker events and social events. Getting involved can be extremely fun and rewarding, and there’s something for everyone, whether you have a lot of time to dedicate or just the occasional evening. Elected Positions are the five officerships (President, Executive Officer, Speakers Officer, Social Events Officer, and Treasurer) – elected a term in advance to prepare – and six positions on the Supplementary Committee. Elections are open to all members; for more information contact vicepresident@cus.org. Appointed Positions include Vice-President, Secretary, Heads of Event Management, Publicity, Press, Recruitment, Guest Liaison, Women’s and Diversity and are decided by Standing Committee. Interviews are at the end of term. Positions available are advertised by e-mail and are open to all members. For more information email vicepresident@cus.org. College Representatives give us their thoughts in a weekly meeting on what we’re doing well and what we could be doing better. College Reps regularly go on to hold higher appointed and elected positions, so if you want a taster of how the Union works (and a weekly bar tab!), this could be for you. If you’re interested please contact executive@cus.org. Stewards help with the security, organisation and smooth running of events. Stewarding is a great way to get a good seat, and be rewarded with free food and a generous Union bar tab! You can commit to however many events you wish; contact our Head of Event Management at hoem@cus.org for more information. Guest Liaison Assistants are responsible for taking care of our guests when they come to visit the Union, so if you want to chat to your idol in person, this is the job for you! Email executive@cus.org for an application form. Officers’ Committees are a fantastic way to see what our Officers do and help them out with their work. Committees include the Speakers Committee (email speakerselect@ cus.org), the Treasurer’s Committee (email treasurerelect@cus.org), the Social Events Committee (email ents@cus.org) and the Publicity Committee (email publicity@cus. org). Email executive@cus.org if you have any questions about which might suit you best. Come and find out more! On Friday the 17th of February, come down to the Union bar at 7pm to find out more about elections, appointed positions, how to get involved in the Union and what a position here is like and has to offer. Our officers will be hanging around, so please just grab someone and ask them any and all questions you might have. It’s only informal and a great way to see if the Union might be for you. We look forward to seeing you!

Competitive Debating The Cambridge Union is one of the world’s most successful debating societies, offering a chance to improve your public speaking skills, learn how to engage with an audience, and represent Cambridge at national and international competitions. No previous experience is necessary, so if you’re interested, why not get involved? Every Tuesday night at 7pm we run our weekly debating workshops, coached by experienced and highly successful debaters, which are great practice whether you’re starting from scratch or want to hone existing skills. Our workshops will help you to become a formidable debater and public speaker. Students who successfully attend the workshop course will be awarded the Cambridge Union Diploma in debating. Our debaters take part in both domestic and international competitions, which are great fun and an excellent opportunity to improve your debating and visit other parts of the country and the world. If you think you might enjoy debating, why not come along to a workshop at the start of term and see what you think? Only Cambridge Union members can take part as our debaters benefit not only from incredible opportunities but also expert coaching and heavily subsidised travel to domestic and international competitions. The Union also runs the world’s largest schools’ debating competition, and you can help to spread debating to young students across the country by judging or helping to organise it. The Cambridge Inter-Varsity is one of the largest and most prestigious debating competitions on the calendar, attracting teams from the world’s best universities, and there are opportunities for you to adjudicate. If you have any questions, please email the Debating Officers, Alex Forzani and Rob van’t Hoff, on debating@cus.org, or check out the website: www.cus.org/members/debating.

PRESIDENT’S THANKS To my team – Alex, Austin, James, Nick, Rob, Rosie and Sophie, you have been completely fabulous. Thank you for being brilliant both at your jobs and turning a hard slog into such a great experience; whether with a wicked gossip, dry comment or late night film, I could not have made it through without you. Special thanks to James for all your help with debates, and to Craig for being the other person awake at ten to five in the morning… To the Easter team, all the very best of luck; David, I have no doubt you’ll turn out something exceptional. Thank you for making me laugh, watching Merlin with me and saving me from taking myself too seriously. Thank you very much to all of you for your help, and Rachael, you make me a very proud mummy. To all the officers who have been before, thank you for everything you did to make the Union the organisation it is today; in particular to Jon for your enduring legacy, to Lauren for showing us how it’s done, to Frankie for being a fantastic boss and an even better friend, and to Calum for being such a kind, generous and supportive predecessor. To our phenomenal staff, thank you for keeping everything going – to Kelly and Victoria for having the answers to every question; to James and Joe for keeping me supplied with fabulous cocktails and to Jess for keeping me supplied with equally fabulous soup; to Sam and Mark for all your hard work and to Catherine for being endlessly dedicated and endlessly lovely. To Bill, thank your incredible support; this job, and the Union, would be completely different without it. (Oh, and sorry to all of you for going a bit mental and sleeping in the office!) To the trustees, thank you for your amazing dedication; without your remarkable work behind the scenes we simply wouldn’t be able to function. Thank you so much to everyone at Trinity, fellow prelims and Fergus for keeping me happy, keeping me eating, shopping, going out, chilling and snuggling; without it I just wouldn’t have been able to keep going. To Ben, thank you for everything, and I know – you told me so! This might be a good place to apologise to my wonderful Director of Studies, so Dr Hopkinson – I’m really, really sorry. Thank you to Helen for always keeping me laughing (and I’m so proud of you - I haven’t warned anyone there’s two of us yet!); to Mummy for making me think I’d be able to do any of this in the first place, and to Daddy for your unbelievable hard work on the line-up and for being at the end of the phone at all hours of the day or night. Thank you, all of you, for making this unforgettable.
