Welcome

Welcome to the Freshers’ Ball! We’re so excited to welcome you on Monday evening as a thanks for joining the society and also so that you can experience what a night at the Union can be like we hope it’s the first social events of many you spend here at the Union.

We’ve got a huge range of food, drink and activities, from some of Cambridge’s most popular student bands to the famous Jack’s Gelato, on offer for your enjoyment and there’s more information about this later in the document. First, though, here are some important points before your visit:

Dates and times

The event will run from 8pm 11pm on Monday 17th October

How to find us

The Union is located at 9A Bridge Street, postcode CB2 1RH. The entrance to the ball will be the Round Church entrance and the queue will begin on Bridge Street.

Entry to the event

We will be letting people into the event from 8pm to 9:30pm, although we recommend you arrive as close to 8pm as possible to make sure you make the most of what the ball has to offer! You are receiving this programme because you have already confirmed your free ticket so all you need to do is turn up with a valid 18+ ID.

Dress code

Black tie optional/ cocktail attire We won’t be denying entry on the basis of dress so find something smart to wear!

VENUES

Orator Bar

In our Orator Bar, we’ve got a stage where we’ll be featuring live performances from some of Cambridge’s most popular student bands. We have Quasar from 8 9pm, Hot Content from 9 10pm and Temor from 10 11pm.

The Chamber

The Chamber will be the venue of our silent disco where our DJ will be running two channels: one with RnB and hiphop and the other with classic club tunes.

Reception

In the reception area, opposite the Pic n Mix, we’ve got a couple of glitter artists on hand to add some sparkle to your outfit!

What to do

... on Arrival

We’ll be handing out a complimentary glass of prosecco to everyone on arrival. We will also be giving out a number of free VKs in the Chamber when the silent disco opens so make sure to get in there and get your VK!

... at the Orator

Our Orator bar will be open on both sides, with its full drinks menu, throughout the evening to purchase drinks and hang out in a more relaxed atmosphere accompanied by performances by some leading Cambridge bands. The 20% membership discount on all Orator drinks of course applies!

Jack’s Gelato

The world famous Jack’s gelato will be offering a large selection of its ice cream all for free.

Pick n Mix

In the reception area we have an awesome Pick n Mix sweet stall so make sure to stuff your sweet bags full!

Yubba Yubba Doughnuts

We’ve got literally thousands of Yubba yubba’s amazing doughnuts, in all variety of flavours, to hand out for free!

about THE UNION

The Cambridge Union Society was founded in 1815 as a student drinking and debating society.

Today, it is famous as the world’s oldest free speech society, and a linchpin of Cambridge’s social life. Students appointed to the Union’s committees organise and execute weekly show debates, speaker events, social events, panel discussions and more throughout the year.

We also compete at a world-class standard in international competitive debate tournaments. Your life membership entitles you to attend all our events and get involved with any of our committees!
