3.5 million reasons to choose a career in Tax consulting.

While contributing to his wife’s fundraising efforts on a leading charity giving platform, one of our Tax consultants realised there was a VAT exemption that might apply to the website’s activities. After meeting with a Deloitte team, the company made a retrospective claim to HMRC and were reimbursed no less than £3.5million of wrongly paid VAT - every penny of which was then donated to fundraisers on the site. It’s this kind of work which makes Tax such an endlessly fascinating and rewarding area in which to develop your career. And Deloitte such an inspiring firm in which to do it. Discover the impact you could make. It all starts now with a visit to our website.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Do you have exams? I’m kidding. You definitely have exams. That’s not very fun. This term we want the Union to act as a safe haven from the stress of the library and revision (unless you’re using the library to revise, of course).

Christof Epaminondas President, Easter 2015

We’ve put a huge amount of effort into planning this term, doing our utmost to reform and improve where possible. We’ve tried our hardest to make our bicentenary year our best yet and continue the brilliant work of Lent term. Our speakers line-up ranges from one of the county’s most respected lawyers, Sir Brian Leveson, to former Home Secretary David Blunkett, to feminist author and activist Naomi Wolf, to Tamsin Greig, one of Britain’s best-loved comedic actors, and Archbishop John Sentamu. With such a broad range of speakers we hope this offers something for everyone. Our debates cover a range of topical issues. With ISIS terrorising large swathes of Iraq and Syria, we consider the origins of radical Islam with our first motion “This House Blames the West for Islamic Extremism”. On Tuesday 28th April we welcome back the Varsity debate in which Oxford and Cambridge’s best debaters speak really quickly at each other with the motion “This House Regrets Monogamy". On 7th May, we mark this year’s most important political event by watching the Footlights and the Oxford Revue battle it out in the debate “This House Wouldn’t Vote Because They’re All Tossers Anyway”, cementing our

position as a forum for intellectual excellence. Join us after to watch election coverage till late (the bar’s going to be open till 6am) with our election night party! Check out the rest of the termcard to get information on what other debates we are hosting. Outside of speakers and debates, events include the Mendeley Forum on Women in STEM and a RED Camera Workshop for those interested in film. Weekly ents, such as Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, LGBT+ Drinks and Cocktail Workshops will all be continuing. We are also holding the Bicentenary Garden Party on 13th June, with tickets going on sale on the first Thursday of term. We will be continuing the brilliant work of Lent term’s Bicentenary Ball by hosting the best Garden Party yet. Ball tickets sold out within 45 minutes, so keep your eyes peeled when ours go on sale! From everyone at the Union, have a superb term. I hope to see you in the coming weeks.

The firm are delighted with the progress that we have achieved so far via our work with the Union society; the live streaming facility, greater reach of the website and social media, and a more diverse audience for the school’s debating competition. We are also proud to be part of the exciting milestone of the 200th anniversary celebrations throughout 2015. celebrating the diversity of thought it engenders, as well as the impressive network of individuals involved, both past and present. Deloitte has a long tradition of recruiting Cambridge alumni and we count ex Union Presidents, Vice Presidents, Officers and life members amongst our staff, globally. We have had over 400 applications so far this year from Cambridge students, which is fantastic and we already know that over 30 finalists have accepted a job offer to start their career with us. We are very proud of the strong ties between Deloitte and the Union society.

EASTER 2015

PRESIDENT’S THANKS My job involves taking the credit for the great efforts of those I work with. Here I’ll try and redress the balance.

Christof Epaminondas President, Easter 2015

To the Easter team – Katherine, your determination to improve the speakers process and dedication to the role is immense. You’re a much better Speakers Officer than I ever was. William, your terrifying efficiency and capacity to just get stuff done never ceases to amaze/scare me. You’ll be an incredible Vice-President. Jack, you came out of nowhere to become a treasurer of unparalleled ambition and success. Helen, you’re great fun and great at what you do. The Bicentenary Garden Party is going to be a huge success. Nick, you’ve been vitally important to this place progressing from strength to strength. I also get the sense you’re a massive softy at heart (maybe?). To Asad and James, I’m excited to see how you guide us to make debating at Cambridge the best it can be. To the Staff - you stop our mistakes becoming disasters and are always there to offer help and guidance. You’re also a great bunch!

Their assistance and advice have been invaluable in helping us to take the Union forward especially in helping us to achieve our brand new AV capabilities, Site Development plans and value for money for members. I look forward to working closely with them over the term ahead. I’d like to thank my family. Without the relentless, unjustified encouragement only a Greek family could offer I would never have developed the inflated sense of self-worth that has led me to become President of this society. They probably owe a lot of people an apology though. To all the people on Standing Committee, everyone, thank you. You give up a big chunk of time and energy and without you none of this would happen. I am genuinely honoured to be working alongside such a great team.

Double thanks must go to Bill. I can confidently say that without you the Union would not be standing. Thanks to the Trustees - your advice is invaluable. Sir Richard, you have been a brilliant Chair - on behalf of the student side of the society, I would like to thank you for everything you have done. A special thank you must go to our
