President’s

Welcome

H a rry Stovin-B radford , P re sid e nt Easte r 2 0 17

Dear Member, My team has worked incredibly hard to create this term card. I’m enormously proud of all of them for what they have brought together for Easter, and I hope that you enjoy watching, dancing, and drinking it as much as we enjoyed making it. Many of you will have exams this term - I hope however that what you find in these pages will tempt you out of the library, or that at least our treasurer’s treats will entice you to make use of your Union Card in other ways! Between debates about life extension and right wing populism, visits by Stephen Fry, Piers Morgan and Mary Berry, and a Garden Party that promises to kick off your May Week with a real bang, we also have an entire programme of ents and other speaker events that mean there will never be a dull moment in Cambridge this term if you come down to the Union. Alongside this, the 1815 remains one of the best value-for-money bars in the city, and has a range of food and drink that makes it the go-to location outside of college for many members; I’m enormously proud of that. The Union sometimes comes under attack for being just a student society. In my opinion, that is exactly

what makes it special. It is just run by students, for students, and this term, as in so many others we are hosting the people who have made the world around you what it is today. The Union is first and foremost for its members. It is genuinely never too early or late to get involved. It is the best decision that I have made so far at Cambridge, and I would urge anyone who loves or loathes what they find here to get involved, to change it, and to make the society their own. This is what my team have done, and we can’t wait to share it with you. I first stepped into the Union building when I was in Year 10 for a school-level debating competition, and have been absolutely enthralled with it ever since. I’m devastated for this to be my last term involved, but I strongly believe that my team have helped me give my time here the send off it deserves with something just a little bit special. Wishing you the very best,

Harry Stovin-Bradford, Fitzwilliam College President, Easter 2017

Competitive

Debating The Cambridge Union has achieved widespread success in competitive debating with its speakers and judges frequently performing well at the European and World Championships. We are continuing to run debating workshops on Wednesday nights for the first four weeks of Easter term from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. There are absolutely no prerequisites and we welcome members of all levels of experience (or even none). We are truly committed to developing the speaking abilities of all members; please do not let a lack of previous experience prevent you from coming to our sessions. Debating will help you develop a vast set of interpersonal skills and broaden your world view. No matter what your future plans are, debating is likely to help you in a wide variety of ways. There are an immense number of opportunities made available for competitive debating at the Union. We send members to debate competitions at numerous locations around the UK and internationally. In the last academic year alone we have sent members to Lund, Paris, Riga, The Hague and many other places. The future international competitions we hope to send members to are in Estonia, Mexico and South Africa!

Additionally, there are numerous roles that we are looking to fill this term for the competitions that we are going to hold in the upcoming academic year including the prestigious Cambridge Inter-Varsity. If this is something that interests you, please do send us an email. We look forward to welcoming many new as well as familiar faces to the debating workshops this Easter term! For further updates and information, sign up for the Competitive Debating Mailing List and join the ‘Cambridge Debating’ group on Facebook. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us at debating@cus.org

Getting

Involved Stewarding: One of the best ways to get involved with the Union is stewarding our events. Stewards wear a fetching neon jacket, get the best seats in the house, and a £5 bar tab, and a free panini. So what are you waiting for? Join ‘Cambridge Union Society Stewards’ on Facebook or reach out to executive@cus.org for more details.

Being Appointed: At the end of each term, the incoming officer team interviews people for a variety of positions, all of which are advertised via email, and in the Union’s Facebook Group. There are roles for anyone and everyone, regardless of experience, so do keep an eye out towards the end of Easter when the Michaelmas team will start recruiting!

Making Floor Speeches, and Points of Information: This term, we are adding a real incentive for giving a floor speech, or a point of information in a debate. We will be opening up the exclusive post-debate drinks reception held with the speakers to all those who make a floor speech or point of information in the course of a debate, alongside members of the Union’s Committee. If you are passionate about the subject being debated, what better way to get to meet those in the debate?

Running for Election: Each term elections are held for the positions of President, Executive Officer, Speakers Officer, Treasurer and Social Ents Officer. To run for election, one must satisfy a few criteria that can be found in the Union’s constitution on our website. Most of these involve supporting the Union’s competitive debating programme in a variety of ways. Running for President requires that you have previously been head of a department at the Union.

Floor Speeches are short speeches given after each pair of speakers. They are given in either ‘proposition’, ‘opposition’, or ‘abstention’. To indicate you wish to give one, raise your hand or stand when the President asks. Points of Information are short comments or questions accepted at the Speaker’s discretion. To offer one simply stand up and announce ‘on that point’ or ‘on a point of information’ or something similar. Remember when either of these points are accepted, to state clearly your Name and College so that we can add you to the guest list. After that, relax and enjoy the free drinks at the reception! 26

Our line-up of speakers and debates is as a result of the huge amount of work that is put in by the elected Officers and a number of students who help us. The bulk of this work is done during the vacation period. If you are interested in staying in Cambridge for a week or more during the holidays to help plan a term then our Vacation Committee is for you. If you’d like to find out more on how to get involved email Jonah or James at speakers-elect@cus.org and executive-elect@cus.org respectively.

Easter 2017

President’s

Thanks

H a rry Stovin- B radford , P re sid e nt Easte r 2 0 17 It goes without saying that a term at the Cambridge Union isn’t the work of one person. For Easter it has been more like 70. Below are those people that I am most indebted to, most in awe of, and most in love with. To Tom, you’re exceptional. My only regret is that I don’t get to work with you for longer, but my loss is Page’s gain. To Jonah, James, Hattie and Seun, you are all genuinely the reason this term exists. Everything we’ve done we’ve done for each other, which is something I’ll never forget, or stop being grateful for. To Tudor and Imran, you secure the core of what we do here. Thank you. To Mia Forbes, the angel, and the devil, on my shoulders. Thank you for all the advice, and for absolutely everything else besides.

To Rhi, Laura, Ella, Dais, Tash, Anna, Steph, George, Oli, Tom C, Jacob, Mumby, Moir, Kwok, Cass, Matthews, Paddy, Ports, Mehlig, Smalls, Brice, Jordan, Lawrence, Mike, Ivin, Stride, Rob, Gean Sillardo, Nairac, Zeek, Hillier, Omar, and Zak, thank you for having a sense of humour about my obsession with this place. You guys are the best friends that anyone could ask for. To M, D, and J, everything I do is to make you proud, and to give you ammunition to mock me with. The Union I hope does both. To Kate, Asia, Charlotte, James, Oliver, Tim and Michael. I am lucky to know as many former Presidents as I do, it gives me all the more people to steal ideas from. To Sam Heap, you make 8:15AM more bearable and 2AM far funnier. Last but certainly not least:

To Full Committee, you never ever get enough credit for literally making this place run. I hope that a great termcard, great socials, and my rave reviews of each one of you to every person I meet between now and my death will go some way to make up for that.

To the trustees. You care about this place, and its long-term future. That is an utterly thankless task in a society where we see nearly a 100% turnover in resident members every three years. For what you have, and continue to do, thank you.

To Bill, thank you for never being afraid to tell me it how it is.
