Here are some activities Culpepper suggests: Organize food drives. FaithWorks provides groceries to more than 1,000 people each month, so the food pantry always needs replenishing. Textile recycling. FaithWorks keeps textiles despite the shape they’re in. Culpepper says every piece of cloth has value and the organization keeps tons of clothes out of landfills every year. Neighborhood cookouts. There are some city areas where groups can grill chicken and burgers and use the meals to visit with the elderly, shut-ins and marginalized people in order to share love and build relationships. Landscaping. Plenty of homes, vacant lots and other properties need sprucing up. Light construction projects. Building handrails, shelving, painting and replacing rotten boards are just a few of the tasks people need assistance with. Of course, FaithWorks also offers some more solitary volunteer opportunities. “Individuals can volunteer to work in our office, food pantry, textile warehouse, knitting prayer shawls, writing notes of encouragement, helping people write resumés, and a host of other things,” Culpepper said.
