This year’s Halloween proved once again that many people in Jakarta are up for a costume party and we congratulate those who did go to all the effort of dressing up and making the parties around town this year as big as ever. Sometimes there does seem to be more staff dressed up than punters but it all helps to set the mood. Bearing in mind that Halloween was a little mixed up this year falling on Wednesday night, which spread the parties over a week, all in all, it was a memorable Halloween for all. Check inside the ThereThen section inside for all the action. So the rains are coming down heavily at times nowadays and while causing a few dramas when you’re getting around, at the same time, it definitely freshens things up and takes the edge off the hardnosed city that we live in. It also helps to keep the place a little cooler which lately is a god send. We were out and about a lot in the last weeks enjoying new and old restaurants around the city. A few notable ones can be found inside our food section. We were also in a number of watering holes doing what we do to get us through the night – some of those nights were longer than what one would recommend for the kids to try at home, but that’s what we love about this place. It never stops if you want to go all the way. Jakarta still has one of the most happening nightlifes in the region. We suggest you get out there and enjoy it for yourself. Check inside for all the juice on what’s happening around Jakarta in the next two weeks and there’s plenty more stories about life right here, right now inside to read too. Enjoy yourselves and your read of The Beat magazine.

Telling Porkies

www.beatmag.com

When an untruth can get out of control

Generally, there are two kinds of lies. We all tell minor or white lies sometimes to avoid offending someone dear to us or getting into trouble. For example, you may tell a relative how much you liked that dreadful pair of socks you received from them as a birthday present, even if you never intend to wear them. The problem is, if you frequently tell white lies they can somehow morph into a big lie that can then really land you in trouble. For example, are the promises made in the heat of a political election campaign white lies that everyone learns to ignore or are they part of an elaborate deception cynically perpetrated on the public to gain electoral support? During early campaigning for the governorship of Jakarta some of the pairs of candidates made all kinds of promises about how they would deal with the city’s complex problems that were clearly unrealistic, sometimes bordering on fantasy. Similarly, as election day loomed in the hard-fought contest for the US presidency both campaigns ended up complaining about how many lies their rivals were telling about them rather than explaining what their own platforms were all about. Two recent examples of how lying can get out of control are the cases involving US cyclist Lance Armstrong and a UK celebrity, the late Jimmy Savile. Although Armstrong has still to admit it, the overwhelming weight of evidence indicates that over the course of many years he lied on a colossal scale about his involvement in illegal doping or the taking of performance-enhancing

Armstrong always denied wrongdoing, protesting he never proved positive despite being tested on many occasions. Whilst that may have been true it was only a half-truth, for it does not prove he did not engage in doping or drug-taking activities at all – only that he was never detected. He has since been stripped of all his Tour titles and may have to repay the prize money he won.

f e a t u r e

“Telling porkies” therefore means telling lies. The phrase can be used when a little diplomacy is called for, as use of the damning word “lies” can therefore be avoided.

027

drugs. These activities helped produce an astounding string of successes for him in the Tour de France and other top international cycling competitions. What’s more, he bullied other members of his team into doing the same or keeping silent about it.

Jimmy Savile was one of the BBC’s most highprofile celebrities on radio and TV in the 1970s and ‘80s. He started out as a DJ but ended up presenting prime-time reality TV shows that appealed to people of all ages, with regular audiences of millions. His career at the top lasted around 40 years and he was perceived as “untouchable”. He died in October 2011 but it appears, from statements made subsequently by many of those affected that he was a serial, sexual abuser of young people, mostly teenage girls. The UK police are now pursuing more than 300 separate lines of inquiry. People are now astounded that his abuse over 30 to 40 years was not known about by the BBC, particularly as some of his offences were even alleged to have occurred on BBC premises. It seems that this was not so much a case of lying as collective denial over a long period by a large number of people. Many rumours existed about Savile while he was still alive but he was a such a well-liked figure that nobody dared to speak out against him in public while he was still alive. His reputation is now in ruins and many who had suspicions about him regret not speaking out earlier. While the odd white lie here or there may be unavoidable, allowing us to negotiate past potentially awkward everyday situations, we should use them sparingly, for an untruth can easily get out of control and almost take on a life of its own. T

he title of this week’s article may have left you a little mystified. It’s an example of Cockney rhyming slang, used originally by native Londoners, as a kind of code where a word is replaced by a phrase it rhymes with. In this case the phrase is “pork pies”, which rhymes with “lies”. The “pies” part of the phrase is lost and “pork” becomes “porkies”.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PEPLUM BELT?

I

f there’s one thing I’ve noticed these past several weeks is that peplum is going to be BIG this season. From the designers’ runway to the rack at high street brands, there are so many pieces from tops and jackets to skirts and dresses, with a peplum touch on it. But what about for those that aren’t so ready yet to invest in peplum? The easiest way for those who aren’t so inclined in jumping onto the peplum bandwagon must be to add the peplum belt into your collection. It will jazz up your top, pencil skirt or even dress into the latest it silhouette.

Left: Lane Crawford’s buyer Tiffany Hsu wearing a Zana Bayne leather peplum belt (USD 350, available at Lane Crawford) So where do we go to find one? Here are a few finds already for you.

What do you think? Peplum frilly waists are sweeping the world and now right here in Jakarta. Will you invest in a peplum belt anytime soon?

THIS SEASON’S TRENDS IN THE HAND OF ASIAN DESIGNERS BY: AMALIA HAYATI

T

he Jakarta Fashion Week 2013 (JFW 2013) opened last Saturday with two big names from Asia: Lie Sang Bong, a Paris-based designer from South Korea, and Sebastian Gunawan from Indonesia.

www.beatmag.com

Oftentimes, when it comes to Asian designers, they usually highlight their Asian roots to the point of coming across as overwhelming. In the Indonesian designers’ case, let me say that I have had enough of brokat modern, batik modern, tenun modern, and whatever textile with “modern” added afterwards. I’d like a breath of fresh air and see something innovative and different. Especially from a big name designer such as Sebastian Gunawan. I’d really like to see something that is in sync with the season’s trend that has been echoing all over the fashion capitals. Not just putting a silhouette that is currently trending into yet another kain nusantara or brokat, but putting a complete work on a collection that is truly one’s own.

For the last couple of seasons, especially after seeing last year’s JFW 2012 collection at Dewi Fashion Knight, I had big expectations toward Sebastian Gunawan or Seba – as he’s more commonly called. When I saw the first two styles of the collection, I couldn’t exactly figure out what was going on. But then as the third, fourth, until the last garment came out one by one, I suddenly found myself floored by the collection that Seba brought to the stage. Pure beauty. The designs mimic the stone and Italian tile with beautiful patterns that one often sees on stylish floors that were translated by Seba into leather embellishment and patchwork. There was a lot of lace on the runway and when I saw it, the word “haute couture” came to mind. There were also silhouettes that are currently trending, such as peplum cut, moulette skirt, off the shoulder top as well as a cape in the collection. Well done Seba, you’ve made us proud.

031

s t y l e

Two things came to mind when I stepped out of the fashion tent last week: one, I really need to get something with a peplum cut and two, I need to get a chic raincoat as shown at Lie Sang Bong’s final look or a beautiful outfit like in Seba’s collection.

www.beatmag.com

Lie Sang Bong, a South Korean designer with celebrity clients such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Rihanna on his list presented his collection first. It was as mind blowing and as well executed as Seba’s, with a reoccurring theme of butterflies, hounds tooth and intricate origami styles. He’s currently based in Paris, so there’s no doubt of the quality of his design. He’s showed us the combination of two big details together, when well executed and carried out, can be elegant. Once again, there was an affirmation in his collection that peplum is definitely going to be big this season and the next.

Classical Music For

By Erza S.T.

If you are parents who believe in this method and would like to introduce your children to more classical music, then you definitely have to take them to the upcoming Children Concert 2012 at Aula Simfonia Jakarta. Led by Dr. Stephen Tong himself as the conductor, this concert is going to present you with an array of music from

We can say that this coming concert is all about children, even the performers. Jakarta Christian Youth Orchestra was chosen as well as Jakarta Oratorio Society Children Choir and Youth Choir with GRII Choir and GRII Karawaci Children & Youth Choir. They also chose a talented 16-yearold award-winning pianist, Glorio Teo as the soloist for this concert.

m u s i c

As usual, Aula Simfonia Jakarta holds the exact program till D- Day and leaves us guessing about compositions that they might play. However, there are a few famous compositions from the line-up of composers above that are associated for children. If I must guess, then I believe pieces such as Mozart’s Piano Sonata no. 11, also known as Turkish Rondo, Handel’s Water Music, and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 (Movement 1) would be part of the program.

033

c l a s s i c a l

The message here is that I am actually very lucky and thankful to my parents who introduced me to classical music since my early days. I do believe that children should be introduced to classical music even before they are born, to help their development and creativity. Scientifically, it has also been proven that children who listen to classical music can improve their spatial reasoning IQ scores. Studies show that a developing brain benefits hugely from exposure to the music of great composers. In a school for children with ADHD, Mozart was actually found to cut racing heart rates and boost concentration. Not only that, but it is also improves cognitive function and increases creativity. This is known as the Mozart Effect.

great classic composers such as Bach, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart to current modern composers such as Stephen Hatfield, Kirby Shaw and Charles Wesley.

Though this concert is dedicated to children, I do believe that we (adults) can still enjoy it too. In the end, classical music is a universal language that can be enjoyed by everyone, young and old…

any friends, colleagues and even fellow journalists have always been curious and asked why I like classical music and opera in particular. The answer is actually pretty simple: I have listened to classical music since I was a kid. You can even say that I literally grew up with it. Instead of listening to pop trends such as Michael Jackson and latest Madonna’s single like most of my friends at school at that time, I was hooked by the beauty of Edvard Grieg’s “Morning Suite” from Peer Gynt and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”. However, It was the production of Carmina Burana conducted by Richard Haskins at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta that really made me want to be an opera producer.

We have three movies to choose from, you can laugh with seven psychopaths who are violent, yet funny, cry with a teenage girl whose life is about to end, or take a tour to an ancient castle full of hilariously terrifying monster. Check out www.blitzmegaplex.com and www.21cineplex.com!

Seven Psychopaths Comedy, Crime, Drama. Writer & Director: Martin McDonagh. Cast: Collin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Olga Kurylenko, Tom Waits. A frustrated scripwriter, Marty (Collin Farrell), becomes inadvertently targeted by L.A. mobsters after his eccentric friends steals the mob boss’ beloved Shih Tzu dog. In need for inspiration to finish his dream screenplay (called Seven Psychopaths), Marty must live to tell the tale. Coming from the same writer-director of “In Bruges” the multiple plots, rich characters and an all-star cast are sure to keep anyone with an IQ and a sense of humour very entertained.

Now is Good Drama. Writer & Director: Ol Parker. Cast: Dakota Fanning, Jeremy Irvine, Olivia Williams, Kaya Scodelario, Paddy Considine.

A teenage girl diagnosed with terminal leukimia tries to compile a list of things she’d like to do before passing away. Topping the list is losing her virginity, but a turn of fate makes her fall in love instead with only a short life to cherish. Adapted from Jenny Downham’s “Before I Die” novel, this tearjerker will definitely make you claim that the “theatre is really dusty”.

Hotel Transylvania Animation, Comedy, Family. Director: Genndy Tartakovsky. Writers: Peter Baynham, Robert Smigel. Cast: Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Andy Samberg, David Spade. Pakai kostum monster favoritmu! Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, owned and run by the one and only Dracula! In this hotel, monsters from around the world can enjoy themselves the way they are with their families. In celebration of his daughter’s, 118th birthday, Dracula invites the world’s legendary monsters. However, an unforeseen circumstance happens when a human stumbles into the hotel and has crush on Mavis. Sure, it’s a bunch of classic horror characters, but they’ll make you laugh.

ORINO Take a tasty trip to Italy in this new osteria in town!

B

www.beatmag.com

y all accounts, the area around Jalan Gunawarman and Jalan Senopati has become a hot area for foodies in the capital. Torino is a city in Northern Italy with a rich culture and history. Now it’s the name of a new Italian restaurant in the South of Jakarta located on Jalan Gunawarman. Opened in mid July, this airy, cozy restaurant is spotless and well-appointed with warm wood furniture. Green colored walls add a nice accent and there are also photos of the city of Torino decorating them. The cozy, neighborhood

restaurant vibe inside can only come when an eatery is run by a family of passionate food lovers.Visitors instantly feel at home here. I decided to meet my dear friend Clarissa for dinner, whose office is not too far from the new restaurant. Torino has several owners, and we were greeted by a couple of them. Italian ownermanager Davide Blaisi and his father, Massimo, had a chat with us about this osteria. An osteria in Italy is a simple, family-owned place serving hearty food. A kind of warung, if you will. And this is the concept that they brought to Torino.

Clarissa and I shared the Pizza Margherita (60k); pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and basil. Simplicity never tasted so good. The Formaggi (80k) looks like another delight; a mix of four cheeses (mozzarella, gorgonzola, ricotta, and parmesan) on a pizza. But I guess we’ll have to order it on our next visit.

045

f o o d

OK, so Torino is a bigger version of an osteria, but the food is as authentic Italian as it gets. The menu is pretty straightforward. Chef Massimo has a masterful grasp of classic Italian cuisines, rich with tradition. This unpretentious restaurant serves hearty classic osteria fare and has a wonderful selection of Italian (and only Italian) wines.

Delicious desserts served as an ideal coda for our dinner; the Tiramisu (45k) and the Panna Cotta (35k) are sinfully scrumptious! Oh, and we also tried some classic Italian cocktails (150k, respectively), the Negroni - a mix of Campari, Martini Rosso, and gin, and the Americano – Next up, for the main course I ordered the Campari, Martini Rosso, and soda. The Mojito Ravioli Ricotta E Spinaci (80k); home made (150k) is also superbly done here. ravioli pasta, filled with ricotta cheese and spinach, with butter and sage. Clarissa chose the Yes, Jakarta already has its fair share of Italian Rigatoni Dell’Osteria (95k); rigatoni pasta, with eateries, but with reliably fresh ingredients and Italian pork sausage, and Taleggio cheese. The delicious pasta dishes, there’s little doubt that good Chef whipped out some type of creamy Torino Osteria can match anything the others sauce for both dishes that just elevated the have to dish out. And of course, the father and son duet of chef Massimo and manager Davide pasta to a whole new level. Blaisi ensures that your entire dining experience We just couldn’t resist the pizza, though. From is definitely wonderful. (Budi Iskandar) the look of other tables here at Torino, a lot of orders of the thin crusted, wood fired pizzas whisked out of the oven. So,

The restaurant’s design sets the stage for a retro dining experience. The ambiance is always lively and fun. Photos of legends, international and local, decorate the walls. Anything from The Beatles to Benyamin S, from Elvis to Bung Karno, makes for a unique atmosphere here.

For those of you in the mood for some Asian fare, try the Tom Yam Fried Rice (55k). And for you carnivores, the Surf and Turf (129k) – 180 g of sirloin plus some prawns, served with onion rings and your choice of potato or rice, and the Black Pepper Beef Ribs (55k) will surely satisfy.

047

Of course, there are classic diner dishes, too. There are a good variety of burgers, from the Classic (45k) to the Mushroom Swiss (79k) to the Chicken or Fish Burgers (69k each), there’s something for everyone.

We also had the chance to try the Grilled Giant Sausage (79k); a 30 cm sausage, doused in BBQ sauce, served with mashed potato and coleslaw. Speaking of sausages, TRS Diner also came up with some hot dog dishes called Dognations, where with 59k you’ll get a hot dog with a choice of soft drinks. There are the Japanese (with nori seller. But we opted to try the TRS Salmon and wasabi mayo) and the Indian (with mango Benedict (59k), and it was a great choice. chutney). And of course, the Indonesian Dog is Want something a bit more personal? You typically done with rendang sauce and shredded can have the Create Your Own Breakfast chilies. Now that is some local touch! This casual eatery has become a Citos favorite in the few short years they have been there. The concept is simple: a straightforward menu, quality ingredients, and tastes galore. But TRS Diner is serving more than just your usual diner delights.

The desserts at TRS Diner are just wonderful; there’s the Sweet Pancakes (29k) and the Homemade Chocolate Brownies (39k). But our vote goes to the decadent Apple Crumble Pie (55k); the pie is served on a sizzling skillet, topped with caramelized apple, vanilla ice cream, and doused with butterscotch cream sauce.Yummy!

TRS Diner is a great choice to dine with your friends and family. It’s no wonder ever since they opened in 2009, they have gone from strength to strength, making them a much loved hang out place in Citos. (Budi Iskandar)

Suhaya reflects his artworks around nature with koi fish, birds, tigers and other fauna making its way on his canvases. This exhibition at the Borobudur Hotel will be like a mini safari and the proceeds will go toward a charity. Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta.

Lakon

Now – Nov 20 This traditionally Indonesian art exhibit derives its inspirations from everything “nusantara”. Come and enjoy the mystique and story the artist has cleverly planned through her canvas arts and installments. The word “lakon” means “a play” and indeed this is a masterful playing of the arts. Galeri Nasional Merdeka, Jakarta.

Nasirun’s solo exhibition:

Scrap art! W

ith artwork that’s inspired and influenced by Javanese Islamic traditions, artist Nasirun combines elements of wayang kulit, calligraphy and supernatural beings which are combined with expressive brush strokes that oddly forms and distorts the art itself.

Nasirun, who graduated from the illustrious ISI Yogyakarta, now finds his work being one of the most sought after in the entire Southeast Asian region and this will be the first time that his work will be on display for everyone to see ever! We strongly advise you to come and revel in this magnificent art. It’s an invitation. Gallery Salihara, Jakarta.

The artist enjoys collecting invitations, in fact, not only does he collect them but he also paints invitations. It’s as if he enters into a witty dialogue with the images he portrays in these paintings and ever since 2008, he has had thousands of requests to create these unique invites.

Rumah Prahara Syagini Ratna Wulan 10 Nov – 20 Dec

www.beatmag.com

Now here is something really fresh brought to you by the young artist, Syagini Ratna Wulan who is exhibiting her latest creation “Rumah Prahara” which literally means “House of Tempest”. Many are now describing this work and artist as enigmatic and progressive. What you cannot afford with this art is passivity. The audience need to be very active because House of Tempest requires us to interact with signs in a narrative flow that we must discover inside a hundred numbered cupboards. What is crucial is the choice of numbers you make as this determines the way the narrative finally ends. This project has been in the works for the past two years and is now finally here to add something new to the art scene in Jakarta. Rumah prahara mimics tha artist’s life experience during the time when she labored with this concept and it has now materialized into something completely unique and magnetic for every art lover. Not one to miss! Ark Galerie, Senopati Raya, Jakarta.
