This city is always full of contradictions and the traffic situation is no different. Last month’s Asian African conference was supposed to bring a great traffic problem to the centre with closed roads etc and the whole town was talking about the impending doom. But as we saw, the traffic was in fact better than just about ever, even getting close to the languid days of Idul Fitri and Lebaran. Wouldn’t it be a different world if people left their cars at home like last week all the time and took public transport - if it was actually available. But alas, that will not change without some real planning and backbone from the people at the top. Unfortunately, it’s business as usual, and probably a lot worse, until then. We are having a party on May 22 at X2 Club. The party will feature a dance contest of grand proportions named The Beat Hottest Dance Contest with the winner receiving two nights in Bali including tickets to get there. That should be some fun and we need some audience participation so be early folks. You may have noticed that I’m not a big fan of commercial EDM so we are bringing you some classic trance – a style from maybe three to five years ago – before banging

Babet plays the blues

26

www.beatmag.com

FEATURE Babet is the blues master and on guitar, he is as good as anyone you could imagine. He plays in two bands, Young de Brock and The Dead Catfish and they are both back on stage at The Beat Room in a new venue, JK7 Club room in the basement of the Arion Swissbel Hotel on May 21. TBJ has a chat. How did you get involved in music? I started playing bass and drums in junior high school, but that didn’t last too long. Then I started to play guitar and here I am now. How about bands, what was the first and how did that lead to the bands you are in now? Wow long story. My first band was called Trubus, then that changed into Maddening Pace. We used to cover 311 songs, but didn’t come up with anything. I’m sure I learnt a lot there, though. In college, around 2005, I met Sabar and he pulled me into Young de Brock. The Dead Catfish was formed in 2012 when I met Efryl in a blues community event in Jakarta called Breaktime. I also played as a session musician in the Authentics, a traditional ska band and sometimes at Kelompok Penebang Roket too. You obviously love the blues. What is it about it that gets you? The wisdom. The blues teaches me how to restrain, to feel, the dynamic, its pain, honesty and the simplicity for sure. We just need five notes to play the blues, but from those notes you can tell everybody about your feelings right now. It’s such an incredible form of music and art. Who are your influences? My oldman, for life and for my music there are a lot of musicians that influence me, such as The Gories, Jimi

Hendrix, Mars Volta, and many more. So how about Young de Brock, what are they about? For me they are family, I learnt a lot by playing music with them, and we are just kickin’ ass, we really rock n roll. I would have to agree with that. You guys are so powerful on stage. Who writes the songs? The lyrics come from Sabar since he is the vocalist, but we all arrange the music together. And who are the other members of Young de Brock? Cepot on guitar, Haikal on bass, Brendong on drums and Sabar on vocal/ percussion. Has you recorded yet and what have been some highlights of the band’s now 10 year career? We released a debut album “Siap Melayang” in May 2014. We won 5th place at the Jakarta Indie Movement Fest, and got in the last qualifying rounds at the Hard Rock Rising 2015, and we just love to rock on stage. Anything coming up in the near future for your bands? There’s a Young de Brock video clip in progress, a debut album for The Dead Catfish in progress, and I hope those things could come up sooner.

FEATURE Hey Nate, where in the world are you right now? Actually at home here in Connecticut – which is a very rare thing. How did you first get into electronic music? I really started getting into electronic music and sonics from video game soundtracks. Later, my older brother turned me on to Armin and A State of Trance. I started producing, and actually at the beginning was making a lot of UK hardcore style. Who out of all the people you have had the chance to work with has inspired you the most? Well I haven’t done much collaborating musically, but I am incredibly inspired by a lot of the DJs I’ve shared the stage with. Guys like Armin, Above & Beyond, and Ferry that have created global brands and loyal followings are incredible. I looked up to all of them before I played with them and continue to do so. Also, guys like Zedd and Calvin that have embraced the commercialism of dance music instead of shunning it… I dig that. How did the name Audien come about? I wish there was a story here, but its just kinda something I made up with my friends. The first track you released “Rise & Shine” was picked up by Ferry Corsten. How did it feel to have such a popular DJ play and endorse your recording? Amazing of course. But, what’s more amazing is Ferry. The guy is like my EDM dad. He’s generous, he’s supportive, and he’s fun to hang out with. What do you enjoy doing most, DJing or producing? Do you usually use most of your tracks in your sets at clubs and festivals? Producing will always be my first love. DJing is the vehicle with which I can share that love. Festival sets are shorter, so I tend to cram more of my own music in there. Club sets are a bit better for experimenting and exploring new tracks.

Do you have any exciting projects coming up? I’m working on a ton of new music for my new label Astralwerks. Without giving anything away, I’ll say that my next few singles will include some mindblowing vocal features. How do you like travelling the world DJing? It’s exhausting but I have no right to complain. I get to travel the world and share my music. Sometimes I do wish I had more time to explore cities, but alas it’s often right on to the next… What other hobbies do you enjoy the most? I really like cars, just driving around and listening to music on the car stereo. I also just like to chill and catch up on TV. If you were stuck on an island with an Ipod with only three tracks to choose from. What would they be? It probably wouldn’t be EDM. Maybe something from Radiohead or Pink Floyd. Why do you think the new commercial EDM sound has taken over the music world in the last couple of years? Is it because it’s more accessible to a greater audience? I think people can relate to and understand songs and melodies that they can sing. So, commercial vocals. This is evident at my shows, where, for example, people sing Bastille’s “Pompeii” at the top of their lungs when I play my remix. The party animals in Jakarta can’t wait for your show in X2. What can we expect to experience at the show in Jakarta? Well its my first and only Indonesian show (for now). So, I want people to have the chance to hear my popular records, but also the chance to hear some new material. I’m really excited … I’ve heard incredible things about the scene in Indonesia, and plan to give it my all. Good to have you here mate, here’s where you promote yourself. Last thing I’ll mention… if you guys come to Vegas… catch me at my Marquee residency. It’s a blast and the venue is amazing. www.beatmag.com

aving gone from being a “bedroom producer” to collaborating with some of the biggest names in the massive EDM scene we have today, American, Paris Blohm seems like he’s only just getting started! With about 10 years of producing under his belt, Paris has definitely hit his stride professionally and musically. After taking the plunge and committing fully to his career as an artist, Paris caught the attention of music industry giant Interscope, with whom he signed a management deal. Since then, Paris has taken the EDM world by storm, flooding the internet with dozens of massive releases. In January last year, his track “Colors” was released on Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings. spot on Beatport. Now with several exciting collaborations and a rapidly growing fan base, this tattooed 25-year-old fella based in LA has got all eyes stuck on him. He will be spinning his pumping tracks live for you on May 8 at Colosseum. The Beat caught up for a quick chat... How are you today, Paris? Is the sun shining and are the birds chirping where you are? The one day someone asks this, it’s finally overcast and dark in Los Angeles, but the birds are chirping! Tell us about how it all started. Was there one massive fork in the road that got you where you are today? Since I was younger, I had always wanted to

FEATURE make/play music. My brother was a very successful musician in his adolescence, and his success inspired me to try and make music myself. The ability to make music on a computer was the real reason I am able to do what I’m doing today. I was never able to play a guitar, or the drums, but I can spend a million hours on a computer, (and a piano now). You changed up your style and artist name since you first started. Tell us what exactly made you want to change those things and why? When I started to make music, I didn’t stick with one sound, or style. How could I? A style is created from thousands of hours of trying everything possible. It’s only when you’ve practiced with every sound that you know which one sticks to you. After making hundreds of songs, and releasing none, I knew it was time to change my name and make it serious. How were you first introduced to EDM? And what would you personally say is your style of music? ‘EDM’ is such a broad term. I was introduced to trance at around nine years old from my brother, who would blast Darude’s “Sandstorm”, while playing counterstrike. We were huge gamers and Darude was my first step towards ‘EDM’. After being obsessed with his disography, I moved onto trance such as Tiesto, Armin van Buuren and the rest is history. Personally, nowadays, when I’m listening to music I don’t listen to anything ‘EDM’. I listen to a lot of downtempo or jam bands, like Tycho, Glass Animals, Phoenix, etc. Anything different than what I make. Are there any artists that inspired you to be the massive producer/DJ you are today? I’d say when I started becoming really involved with producing, Deadmau5 would have to had been one of my main influences. His melodies and production were so ahead of it’s time. Are there any clubs or festivals that you would love to part in? Since I’ve been attending EDC since 2006 as a

fan, I’d love to play mainstage. I played a side stage last year but I didn’t let it get to me, as my main goal is mainstage EDCLV. What is one of the biggest highlights of your career so far? Every show has been something important to me, but I’d say that traveling the world and playing music is the biggest highlight for me. I take every day at a time, and am thankful and grateful that I’m able to do this for a living. Do you have any advice for up and coming producers/DJs? Never give up, no matter how many people say it’s impossible. It really does seem impossible, but it isn’t. Only three years ago I was delivering food for a living. But also, don’t do music to become something. Do it for yourself, and do it because it’s a creative outlet. If you do it for yourself, no matter what, you’re already rewarded. And it shows in your work. People can tell when music is made for popularity, or because it’s a passion of yours. If you were to chose one city to base yourself in, where would it be? So far, Los Angeles, just because I’m born and raised here. It’s home. But I can imagine living somewhere tropical or in Asia somewhere. This world is massive, and traveling has really opened my eyes. What’s one song in your set that always brings the house down? Not to sound cliche, but ‘Left Behinds’ has been absolutely unreal, every set. Have you been to Indonesia before? What can we expect? I have been, and it’s one of my favorite places in the world. I’d say we can expect an amazing time, nothing less. Thanks for the chat, Paris! Catch Paris Bholm at Colosseum May 8...... www.beatmag.com

Follow Me: Instagram Accounts Every Jakartan Must Follow If your Instagram account is being littered by fugly selfies, dinner plates, and inspirational quotes from people that you least expect, well you are in for a treat. Here we present Instagram accounts every Jakartan must follow.

Edgy urban photos: @Arieffandy Here is a guy who knows how to live life on the edge. Arief Fandy takes selfies on skyscraper ledges and high construction cranes, day or night. Although inches away from freefall, he poses with class as if there is nothing to it. The mere sight of his photos will make your knees shiver. His posts of what he calls ‘rooftopping’ stand out as he is the master of finding the most impossible angles, all the while having to take the time to set up his camera at dizzying heights. We are most curious as to how he managed to sneak in to these restricted areas.

FEATURE Hot chicks: @Cantiknyajakarta, @jktmostwanted Although there are a few of these types of Instagram accounts out there, we found that @ Cantiknyajakarta and @jktmostwanted are the two best curated profiles presenting Jakarta’s finest looking selfies. And trust us when we say, these are the selfies that you guys want to see. For all the girls who regularly bombard their account with selfies, we challenge you to tag your photos to their account and see whether your selfies actually do justice in this world. Urban art: @darbotz Darbotz is a famous mural artist based in Jakarta and his Instagram account shows the many murals he has made all around town. He is both underground and works on commission from various firms, including Google and Nike. His biggest piece is on the outer walls of Artotel Jakarta.

Clubs: @colosseumjkt, @x2clubjakarta, @ hypemusicasia Colosseum Club and X2 Club are the two best clubs in Jakarta today. Aside from offering killer acoustics, decor, and light shows, these clubs are devoted to the electronic music scene. They regularly bring in the best local and international talent to take on the DJ booth. Hype music is the city’s hottest international DJ booking agency. And to know who they are bringing in to to town and where they will be playing we suggest you follow their Instagram account.

The shopping mall antithesis: @pasarsanta Unlike the air-conditioned malls in Jakarta, Pasar Santa is straight up a traditional market. However on the top floor of the market is a collective group of youngsters that sells seriously good coffee, food and snacks, and cool knick knacks. As many stores are run by an owner (and not a paid employee) that have other responsibilities elsewhere, there are no clear operational hours. The only way to be sure is to follow @pasarsanta to find out the latest happenings. One thing’s for sure, coming here we advise you to wear shorts and a t-shirt. Hangover cures: @puravidajkt OK we have to confess this is not an Instagram account actually selling hangover cures. However they do make healthy “breakfast-ina-jar” which are nutritious treats and juices that will help cure that nasty headache of yours. Besides, to find anything filled with sugar and calories you don’t have to look far, and healthy stuff usually taste like cardboard. Here we are happy to inform you that they make healthy menus that actually taste like food, and are delicious.

The best Instagram account on earth: @thebeatjakarta OK maybe not the best in the world, but we’re getting there! Help us enrich our Instagram by tagging #thebeatjakarta to your photos that have a theme of Jakarta to it (and #thebeat_ bali if you are on holiday). We want to know how you are enjoying the city, and how we can inspire others to follow in your footsteps. The best photos will be featured in the magazine. www.beatmag.com

the great season of

or over a decade I have been organizing many opera galas under the banner of the Indonesia Opera Society for private corporate companies and have received many requests from people who also wanted to attend. It seems that opera aficionados have been increasing over the last decade.

CLASSICAL

Looking at this positive vibe, I decided to organize an intimate opera gala that is open to the public as part of an opera dinner series that was created specially for Raffles Jakarta. Choosing Italian opera as the main theme, Raffles Jakarta and the Indonesian Opera Society would like to start this Spring as “The Great Season of Melodrama”. The famous Italian duo featuring soprano Angela Papale and pianist Professor Fabio Marra was chosen to open this first gala event accompanied by our own young and fine tenor Widhawan Aryo Pradhita from Surabaya. Together the three of them will definitely fulfil your operatic desires, as they will perform some of the most famous Italian arias from various operas. Three of Italy’s most beloved opera composers: Verdi, Ponchielli and Puccini were chosen to be the highlights in this opera. Expect to see and hear beautiful arias from famous operas such as “Un Ballo in Maschera”, “La Forza del Destino”, “Ernani”, “La Giaconda”, to even a special section on “La Boheme”.

Italian soprano Angela Papale is an awardwinning musician who has performed around the world from Mexico to Seoul. She received praise from the critics for her “warm timbre and particularly expressive voice combined with a strong stage presence”. Together with her husband who is also the pianist Fabio Marra, they will perform at this gala as part of their 2015 Asia Opera Tour. From our own country, the young and talented tenor Widhawan Aryo Pradhita from Surabaya will perform together with Angela. I still remember his noteworthy performance on Ananda Sukarlan’s last opera “Clara” a few months ago as a policeman who was really mesmerizing. The event itself will be presented as a truly fashionable and classy opera gala where you are obliged to come in a black tie and evening gown. A cocktail reception follows with a specially crafted three-courses degustation menu being served by the delightful Raffles Jakarta kitchen, before we start the opera. It is definitely not your average way to enjoy opera and it is also limited to 100 seats only. Are you excited? I know I am …

CD REVIEW Wonderful Wow

Kendrick Lamar

Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

To Pimp A Butterfly There was a time when the South-central L.A. suburb of Compton was renowned for producing some of the greatest gangsta rap artists to ever emerge from the ‘hood. From the late 80s onwards, Compton gave us Dr. Dre, NWA, Eazy-E, Ice Cube just to name a few, but with the ushering in of more radio-friendly, watered down artists that glamourised the bling side of the business rather than the plight of marginalised black Americans, gradually its title as the hub city of real hiphop began to fade. Born in 1987, Kendrick Lamar was surrounded by the Compton sound from an early age – check out the artist as a toddler on the knee of a gang member on the cover of his groundbreaking 2010 major label debut Good Kid, Maad City – this guy is as authentic as they come; “And once upon a time, in a city so divine/Called West Side Compton, there stood a little n****/He was 5 foot somethin’, dazed and confused/ Talented but still under the neighbourhood ruse…” we’re

told on track six of follow-up To Pimp a Butterfly, as if we needed any more convincing that he’s the real deal, and here to put Compton back on the radar. With racial tensions across The States arguably at a new high in the wake of incidents like Ferguson and the Eric Garner shooting, the atmosphere is once again ripe for socially conscious, intelligent commentary from rappers, and there are none more so relevant right now than Mr. Lamar, who has managed to mix together a potent album brimming full of collective pent-up outrage - not only directed at the patriarchy of white American power structures, but also the sell-out homeboys who are more interested in schmoozing with the A-listers once they’ve sold a few million albums.

of losing touch with your roots on “Institutionalized” or the temptations of a groupie on “For Sale?”, but what is most surprising is the old school jazz vibe which runs thick through the album. There’s an exciting tension between his razor sharp observations and the kind of airy contemporary jazz on “These Walls”, or the momentary respite of “Alright” which features a no-doubt humbled Pharrell Williams. At times the blue note interludes and skittering lyrics sound almost like improv, but after a few listens it becomes clear that To Pimp a Butterfly is meticulously executed, even down to the posthumous 2Pac duet “Mortal Man” – a concept that no one else could have pulled off convincingly.

Vocally, TPaB is a schizophrenic ride through a series of Lamar’s different personas, addressing racial injustice on “The Blacker the Berry”, his own drunken insecurities on “u”, the pitfalls

For such a relentless album, TPaB is an absolute joy to listen to, rich in detail and with enough acerbic wit and social commentary to confirm Kendrik Lamar’s position as the current king of hip-hop. Long may he rule. Dan Ashcroft.

For a sweeter selection, the homemade Otoberi Cheese Cake (50k) or the Yoti Oyeng Otoberi (45k) – French toast with strawberry – are simply wonderful! Halo Niko. Gedung Promenade Lot 13, Jl. I

n a city of many eating places, you can find just about any type of food in Jakarta; from traditional to modern, local to international, and anything in between. Welcome to Slice of Heaven. This is a place that fuses Japanese and Italian food. But it is much more than that. The interior has a minimalist design, with sleek lines and lightly colored furniture. No doubt it gives a certain Japanese flair to the place. First thing’s first, if you’re into ‘the other white meat’ AKA pork, then you’ll be adoring the porcine selections at Slice of Heaven. Starting from the appetizers, the Bacon Wrap (95k) is very popular; sausage wrapped with bacon, what’s not to like? And the dipping sauce is amazing! Want veggies with your pork? Why not? Try the Smoked Pork Salad (65k). For more standard dishes, the Caesar Salad or Kani Stick Salad (55k respectively are certainly the ones to go for; the latter is a salad with crab stick and special Japanese dressing.

56

www.beatmag.com

FOOD Other noteworthy starters here are the Calamari (40k), Truffle Fries (55k), or FrittoMisto (65k); a fried squid and shrimp combo. The Tofu Beef Cheese (75k) is another wonderful main dish; oven baked Japanese tofu and minced beef served over a hot skillet, with baked potato on the side. And the Hamburg Curry Set (85k) is also worth to try; juicy hamburger patty and rice poured with heavenly homemade Japanese-style curry! There’s also a more traditional Italian influence on the Lasagna (75k) and the Spaghetti Meatballs (65k). Ortry the Mac & Cheese (75k), topped with bacon, of course! The pancakes and waffles are also highlights at Slice of Heaven, and some even have, what else but bacon, in them! The Waffle Combo (110k); waffle, fried chicken, bacon, egg, salad, and maple syrup, is the ultimate. And how about the Bacon Pancake (70k); a mouthwatering juxtaposition of salty bacon and sweet maple syrup, or the Waffle BLT (80k); a delightful bacon, lettuce, and tomato inside a waffle! But there’s also the flavorsome Nutella And Mascarpone Pancake (65k). For your sweet cravings, you really have to indulge yourself with the tasty Ovomaltine Banana Toast (95k); crunchy Ovomaltine, soft banana, over generous, well-buttered, slice of toast, and the scrumptious Brownies S’mores (45k); warm chocolate brownies with chewy marshmallows on top. Yummy! The refreshing signature mocktails are perfect to wash them all down. The Lychee Candy (69k) is a cool blend of lychee, orange juice, passion fruit syrup, and mint mojito syrup. But our favorite is the Love Dust (55k/125k); kiwi, strawberry, lime, apple juice, passion fruit syrup, mint mojito syrup. Pork lovers or not, Slice Of Heaven definitely dishes out appetizing food and beverages for you discerning foodies. A must-try addition to Jakarta’s culinary scene! (Budi Iskandar)

VETERAN

Coffee &Resto

A new place with a vintage feel. Veteran Coffee & Resto opened its doors a little over a month ago. The restaurant is located inside an old building on Jalan Veteran, right on the side of the Istiqlal grand mosque in Central Jakarta. There’s a retro vibe all around as vintage furniture, antique lamps, and even old television sets turn back the years. Remember the simpler times when all you had was one channel on your TV, no internet, no gadgets, and the only phone you had was the one in your house for every family member to use? Well, at least I heard the stories from my folks, hahaha‌ As a coffee place, Veteran brings the best beans from all over Indonesia; from Aceh, Sidikalang, Bali, Flores, Toraja, all the way

58

FOOD to Papua. The coffee bar at the back of the place will definitely satisfy your caffeine fix; from Espresso (25k single, 35k double), Cappuccino (35k), to the tasty Flavored Latte (35k) of vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, or chocolate. Food wise, Veteran claims that there’s no MSG used in cooking the food. The menu consists of Indonesian and Western favorites, all done with a certain comfort food-feel. The Lumpia or Spring Rolls can be a nice starter. How about the all-time favorite Fried Cassava, AKA singkong goreng, or the Tahu Isi or fried tofu filled with vegetables? All of those dishes are priced at 28k. You can also share some pizzas with your friends like the Pizza Margherita (38k), Pizza Vegetarian (40k), or Pizza Meat Lover (50k). And there are more pasta fare like the Spaghetti Bolognaise (50k) and Lasagna (50k) here. There are several options for nasi gorengs, but the Special Fried Rice (35k) is a firm favorite here. And the Oxtail (88k) dishes are simply wonderful, be it grilled, fried, or with a spicy West Sumatran-style Balado sauce. The luscious desserts are also worth a try. We love the Apple Pie (31k); oven baked, homemade apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream just hit all the right spots. And the Chocolate Melt (31k) has a fair share of fans also. Other than the coffee, you can enjoy a good selection of teas, like the Apple Mint Tea (32k) that we enjoyed. There are also smoothies, like the Strawberry or Banana Smoothie (35k each), and the more decadent Banana Coffee Break (38k); made with some banana, vanilla ice cream, coffee powder, and brown sugar. From the Mocktail selection, the Fruit Punch, Virgin Mojito, or Virgin Strawberry Caipiroska (28k); the latter really stands out. It is a refreshing blend of strawberry, green lime, brown sugar, and topped with a dash of soda.

The vintage vibe of Veteran Coffee & Resto can be a good alternative for you to enjoy a cuppa, or a nice meal, in the middle of the city. (Budi Iskandar)

HIDE & SEEK Swillhouse

Seek and ye shall find this extraordinary establishment! Hide & Seek Swillhouse is tucked away on the side of the Fairgrounds building in the SCBD area, but the place more than makes up for its unusual location with its retro glam décor. The vibe here is Victorian futurism, or Steampunk; an atmosphere inspired by movement of creativity and imagination in the 1800s. Think of Jules Verne’s ‘Voyages Extrodinaires’, with an edge. Dark wood flooring and furniture dominates the room, accented with metal features here and there. Check out the background decoration of the bar; it is especially impressive. But the interior is not the only wonderful feature of the place. The food can take center

FOOD stage as well. The Barbeque Buffalo Wings (78k) is a seemingly simple yet superb starter; the homemade BBQ sauce and homemade ranch dressing lift the chicken wings up a notch. Another favorite light bite is the Crispy Squid Head with Black Sabayon Sauce (75k). We also loved the Couscous Salad (85k with beef, 75k chicken); a magnificent mélange of couscous, celery, beans, cilantro, parsley, chick peas, mint, and almond. A must try! And soup lovers should try the hearty Truffle Chestnut Soup (75k). For the mains, the 1 kg Wagyu ‘Entrecote’ (189k) is a great dish to share with two or three friends; US premium wagyu beef, cube roll, sautéed vegetable, and mixed greens. It comes with a choice of potato and sauce. A couple of lobster dishes, however, were truly delectable. The Fruits Lobster Sandwich (169k) is a tasty mix of flavors; celery, watermelon, apple, honey dew melon, baby romaine, fresh onion, boiled egg, mayo, with a side of fries. And the Lobster Risotto (189k) is as comforting as it gets. The Pan Seared Pork Belly and the Baked Norwegian Salmon Fillet (139k, respectively) also have many admirers. You can end it on a sweet note with the Fresh Strawberry Shortcake (65k) or the Crunch Malt Mocca (68k) for dessert. The inventive bar created a number of wonderful signature cocktails. Take the Mad Scientist (125k); it’s a ‘twisted’ Long Island Iced Tea uniquely presented in a speakeasy style. There’s also prohibition-era libations recreated for your pleasure. And, do take advantage of the wideranging selection of whiskeys and liquors. Another highlights at Hide & Seek are the Lunch Specials which cater to the office crowd around SCBD. The Traditional Nasi Ijo (95k with Wagyu rib eye, 68k chicken, 79k pork belly) is a flavorsome dish. The green chili fried rice has a right amount of tasty kick, and our pick of the rib eye was remarkable! Other popular choices are the Roasted Asian Barbeque Chicken Quarter and the Country Style Roasted Chicken Quarter (79k each). Hide & Seek Swillhouse is a unique place you should look for. Take a journey and explore the food, drink, or even the parties, you’ll find them most satisfying. (Budi Iskandar)

GIZMOS Video Drone with Real Time Display

The Fish Catching RC Boat This remote controlled 17 1/2” boat can catch up to a 2-lb. fish. Pre-rigged tackle—a hook, snap swivel, bobber, and 150’ of nylon 2-lb. test line— secures to the boat’s faux engine at the water line. The remote control moves the boat forward, backward, left, and right, enabling you to troll back and forth over a speculative patch of water or position it behind obstacles a conventional cast cannot reach, allowing your preferred bait to settle and tempt hungry fish. An included 44’-long telescoping grapple fetches the boat from the water along with your catch. Requires six AA and one 9-volt battery. Ages 8 and up. 17 3/4” L x 5 1/2” W x 7” H. (1 1/4 lbs.) $69.95. www.hammacher.com

The Levitating Lamp

This steadyflying 4-axis aircraft has a built-in video camera that transmits live images to a screen on the controller, so you can see exactly what the camera is recording. Features reliable 2.4GHz radio frequency, 150-ft. range and 360-degree stunt flips at the touch of a button. Flies forward and backward, turns left and right and flies horizontally. Includes 2GB SD memory card and card reader that lets you easily transfer videos to any Mac or PC via USB. Ages 14+. $349.99. www.sharperimage.com

Digital Wireless BBQ and Kitchen Thermometer The Digital Wireless BBQ and Kitchen Thermometer accurately measures the temperature of beef, veal, lamb, pork, chicken or turkey, and alerts you when it’s ready. Simply use the LCD screen to select the meat and your preferred tenderness (rare, med rare, medium, well done). Then insert the stainless steel probe from the base unit into the meat as it’s cooking. When your food is ready, the base unit sends a beeping signal to the handheld receiver, up to 100 feet away. Features easy to use presets, optional timer controls, Fahrenheit/Celsius option and a builtin flashlight for low-light conditions. For indoor or outdoor use with any oven or BBQ grill. $49.99. www.sharperimage.com

This lamp with a rotating shade floats in mid-air above its base. The disconcerting desk lamp creates a physicsdefying gap between the base and shade that may perplex guests and amuse the owner, who knows its secret. A magnet tucked into the lampshade is repelled by electromagnetic coils in the lamp’s base, a powerful opposing force that causes the shade to levitate. The computerized coils make 1,000 adjustments per second to ensure the shade stays upright, even when bumped, while the swirling pattern accentuates the natural spinning motion caused by air currents. Plugs into AC. 16 1/2” H x 7 1/2” Diam. (5 lbs.). $149.95.www.hammacher.com
