Welcome to another edition of The Beat Jakarta. In this edition we have the full round up of all the shows that we went to over the past two weeks around town. We also have a cheeky look at the way faster communication can help us in many ways in this modern life, but how it also is a two edged sword that can work for you as fast as it can work against you. Jim Read takes a look at the politics of short messaging. Dethu catches up with singer Tika and gets the lo-down on what turns her on in music, books, and what’s going on in her busy world at present. Our resident foodie, Mr Budi Iskandar is out on the trail again to find the best food and most interesting restaurants around the city and this week comes back with one very original restaurant in Kemang with dishes all based, or containing, alcohol. A brave concept in this town I’m sure but one that you should get a taste of soon. And the other restaurant is all about ice-cream, well Magnum ice-cream actually―and a whole lot more, where people are queuing up to have a try. The girls from fashionesedaily are back with more insights on the fashion scene and new products available around town too. All the events and what’s on information for the next two weeks in the big city can be found in the Mainstage and HereNow sections inside. Be sure to come to our ninth installment of The Beat Lex Sunday BBQ and Sunset Party on October 28 at Liquid Exchange in Epicentrum Mall Rasuna, Kuningan. It kicks off at 4pm and rocks on through the evening with special guest DJS in tow. Log onto Beatmag.com for the latest info in town.

Soundslike House, Electro, Dutch, Progressive, Mash up Hail From Jakarta, Indonesia

Red Square | Thursday 18 October | 11pm

HaVE Been

Ricky kemudian membangun manajemen El’8Teen Record, dan belum lama meraih predikat juara 2 Indonesian Favorite Male DJ Of The Year dari Indoclubbers. Ricky Chattaway’s career started out in modeling and acting. His penchant for collecting vinyls of international DJs led him to pick up DJing at 19. He then became resident DJ at Red Square in Kuala Lumpur and Pharaoh at Acasia Hotel Jakarta before joining Red Square Jakarta. He has gained considerable experience playing in Jakarta and other big cities in Indonesia. Chattaway also ventured to Zouk club, Ministry of Sound Singapore, Spin Club Solaris and Goodezz Mont Kiara. He also opened his own management, El’8Teen Records and recently won second place in the Indonesian Favorite DJ of the Year category from Indoclubbers. His companion is Roy Jordy, an actor who worked on TV shows. When his interest in music grew stronger, Jordy studied the art and technique of DJing. He began performing in many clubs before El’8Teen came calling for him.

Ricky Chattaway is pretty tied up with his regular gig at Red Square Jakarta. He also performs there with his EL’8Teen friends from time to time; the same goes with Roy Jordy who is increasingly better known within the club circuit in Jakarta. Both DJs will team up at Red Square on October 19.

NAIF Soundslike Vintage, Retro Hail From Jakarta, Indonesia

Hard Rock Café | Monday 22 October | 9pm

Have Been

Naif is an Indonesian band that was formed in 1995 while they were studing at the Jakarta Art Institute (IKJ). Consisting of David (vocals), Emil (bass, keyboards), Jarwo (guitar, vocals), and Pepeng (drums), the band released its first debut album with a successful hit single called ‘Mobil Balap’ in 1996. Naif didn’t want to declare what genre their music was, since they wanted to offer honest music. Many people, however, call them a retro band because they have many characteristics of classic bands from the sixties or so giving them a nostalgic sound. The band has released nine studio albums, and also a few compilation albums and other projects that they have done with many fellow musicians.

www.beatmag.com

are Now

Naif is still active appearing in many stages in Indonesia and the latest will be an event called “Annaifersary 17th”. It is an event to celebrate the band’s 17th anniversary and will be held at Hard Rock Café Jakarta on October 22.

Ever wished you could turn back the clock after saying something regrettable?

Have

The Obama team cannot “redo” but can at least try and repair some of the damage in the two subsequent debates.

Similarly, now that the election for Jakarta’s new governor is over and former governor Fauzi Bowo has been replaced by Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo, I should imagine there could well be an element of regret by both sides over some of the more unpleasant things each team said about the other in the heat of the campaign.

We’ve all transmitted e-mails we’d rather not have sent, the realisation coming just a nanosecond after we’ve clicked on the “send” button. “If only I could turn the clock back just two seconds” is no longer an impossible wish as software now exists that gives you a chance to decide whether you really want that “send” command to be final. How many people have it installed though?

This is all the more poignant as Fauzi has said he is willing to work with Jokowi in some kind of advisory capacity, assuming Jokowi will accept him. Perhaps it’s all just part of the cut and thrust of politics but we’ll see soon enough if a post-election detente materialises. In another political contest that’s currently commanding world attention, what was not said by one candidate has become more important than what he actually said. In the first televised US presidential debate of the current election, the general consensus among commentators is that the incumbent, Barack Obama, “lost” it due to his comparatively lacklustre performance. Some of the verbal attacks he was widely expected to make never materialised, while the non-verbal but negative body language he displayed when his opponent Mitt Romney spoke was relentlessly exposed in the split-screen TV format. Post-debate polls show a narrowing of the gap between the two, with some even showing Romney surging a few percentage points ahead for the first time.

There’s not much you can do about text messages or tweets you’d rather not have sent but the main problem here is that many people forget that although an SMS is normally seen only by the intended recipient, a tweet is a broadcast message that can be read by lots of others too, similar to a broadcast text sent via BlackBerry Messenger. It’s a bit like a very private comment you’ve just whispered to a close friend being broadcast to the world at large via a public address system. A number of people in the public eye recently tripped themselves up when their innermost thoughts, not intended for public consumption, became fodder for public debate. In this digital world where news travels fast and bad news even faster, it certainly pays to pause momentarily before sending a comment, composed in the heat of the moment, into cyberspace, for reaching for “reset” is often not an option. hat music are you into at the moment? Seringai’s Taring. Over and over and over. Best purchase I’ve made this year. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Tone Loc’s Loc’ed After Dark when I was in fourth grade. Hiphop has always been my first love. Still is. The only reason I haven’t made a hiphop album is cause I am a horrible rapper. And the first song that got me into hip hop was “Funky Cold Medina”, hahaha. From there I started discovering other artists like Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan, NWA and found out the more roots stuff like Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash even later. So basically I found my way in through the more pop stuff. Just like everyone, I began as a poser. That’s why I’m always nice to posers. Hahaha.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why? Tough question. If I had to pick one, it would be Nina Simone’s Wild Is The Wind, for obvious reasons. Nina Simone’s like a goddess to me. I once kicked a guy out of my car, left him in the middle of a road, for talking sh!t about Ms. Simone. Hahaha. But I can’t leave out Suzanne Vega’s 99.9 Fahrenheit Degrees, and Noa’s self titled album, which are big influences in my own song-writing. I still play Kula Shaker’s K every time I get on a plane, and to this day Public Enemy’s Nation of Millions still helps in directing my temper in the right direction. What was purchased?

You know how sometimes you buy an album just because you know the artist, but you actually have no idea what their music sounds like, and after you bought it and listen to it, the first thing that you think of was “Damn it, what am I gonna say to these guys when they ask me my opinion about their album”. Hahahaha. I can’t name the artist, but let’s just say I have been avoiding them since I bought the album because I am not a very good liar. Hahaha. Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Probably a cop. I grew up resenting the police. It’d be interesting to reincarnate as someone you simply can’t relate to, just to see what it’s actually like from their point of view. What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Re-reading an old series of zines called Brainscan by Alex Wrekk. It’s a 10. Definitely. What new movie should people see? Why? I don’t know, you tell me. Hahaha. What song do you choose to start your weekend? Depends on what kind of weekend you’re looking forward to. I think this weekend, mine would be Slank’s “Reaksi Kimia”. And song you choose to end your weekend? Melancholic Bitch’s “Nasihat yang Baik”, and Beethoven’s “Sonata Claro de Luna”. Rudolf Dethu

I

have a weak spot over glasses, so my heart skipped a beat when I saw the new eyewear collection from Chanel for Autumn/Winter 2012/13. Trust us, you will too once you see the whole collection!

For this collection, Karl Lagerfeld revisited Chanel’s iconic tweed. How? By encasing the temple arms with tweed! Smart and looking ever so stylish, it creates a harmonious union between the acetate material and the classical touch of tweed. And the way they do it is not just by simply applying it over the arms, it is molded together for a seamless look. The colours that were picked were from the Chanel Fall/ Winter 2012/13 palette; authentic green, British brown, iconic black and white, and deep blue. A very classic choice for eyewear.

www.beatmag.com

It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, so it definitely will make its way to my wish list. They have been available since early October, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to stop by the Chanel boutique to find a pair that suits me.

ada Labo is a skincare range created by Rohto Laboratories back in 2004. Ever since their first launch, they are continually gaining a positive response from the market. So positive that the hype reached our shores, though the products are not available here yet. Back then, the only means to get Hada Labo product is only at neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. Why are they so coveted? Hada Labo was created without the additional ingredients of colouring, fragrance, mineral oil or any other ingredients that is not needed by our skin. But most importantly, the inclusion of three types of Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronic Acid, Improve Hyaluronic Acid and Nano Hyaluronic Acid) is what make the products from Hada Labo so special. They say, a drop of the Hada Labo’s lotion can lock an ocean’s worth of hydration. It is indeed what the lotion is able to do. It’s so hydrating, light and feels ultra comfortable. There are variety of lines within Hada Labo skincare itself with the inclusion of ingredients such as AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid), BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), High Purity Arbutin extracted from bearberry fruit to lighten

your skin, and retinol which is a vitamin A derivative, known to help counter the sign of ageing. According to market data in Japan, in 2011, every two seconds, one bottle of Hada Labo is sold, especially the lotion. Seeing the demand and opportunity in the Indonesia market, they’ve decided to bring Hada Labo here. Since it’s produced by Rohto Laboratories factory in Indonesia, you can very well make sure that it’s produced with the highest standard and quality in mind, maintaining the same level as they are when they’re produced in Japan. Indonesia is lucky enough to have a Rohto Laboratories factory located here, because this means the product doesn’t need to be imported from somewhere else, hence the price becomes much more affordable. In the Asia region, the only two other countries that have Rohto Laboratories factory are Japan and China. Singapore and Malaysia stock their Hada Labo products from those two factories. So now that they’re available on our shores, you will be very pleased at how easy you can buy them from supermarket and drugstore, with such an affordable price!

However as usual, Mozart surprises us. After meeting some inspirational wind players from Manheim, Mozart’s imagination for a wind section including the flute was finally unleashed. All of Mozart’s large-scale operas, late piano concertos and some of the late symphonies have glorious flute parts. Die Zauberflote opera, also known as The Magic Flute, is perhaps the best-shown example of Mozart’s love for the flute. The use of the magic flute in this opera to protect Tamino from all danger and guide him through fire and water in his initiation to Sarastro’s sacred temple symbolized purity, honor and the power of good over evil. Surely, we can ask for no greater testament than this. Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under Dr. Stephen Tong as conductor is also inspired by Mozart’s love hate relationship with the flute. They feature some of Mozart’s famous flute work for

their upcoming concert in Aula Simfonia Jakarta. Two of Mozart’s big and famous overtures from Die Zauberflote and Don Giovanni opera were chosen for this concert. To accompany these overtures, they also chose Mozart’s other famous flute piece, Flute Concerto in D Major and Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor as part of the program. Native Taiwan flautist Chia-Ying Chiang is also going to be a guest star in this concert. Graduating as flautist from the Manhattan School of Music and Yale School of Music, flautist ChiaYing Chiang is currently a doctoral student in composition at Indiana University. She developed her interest in composition after she graduated from Yale and has been working as composer and performer since. Many of her works have been performed in Taiwan, Japan and USA. Indah Lestari Hertanto was also invited to be a guest star at this concert as a pianist and will play solo on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor. Graduating from Towson University in Maryland, USA; Indah is one of the music lecturers at Institute Reformed. It is normal not to like something, but it is how you make the best out of it is how you measure greatness. Mozart has surely shown us exactly that. Though you don’t like it, it doesn’t mean you cant make it great.

If

there is a musical instrument that Mozart was really not fond of, it’s surely the flute. He even wrote about his dislike of the flute in a letter to his father in 1778 saying: “You know that I become quite powerless whenever I am obliged to write for an instrument which I cannot bear.” By instrument, Mozart is referring to the flute as he had been commissioned to write for amateur Dutch flautist: H. de Jean. Most of Mozart’s choral works, early symphonies and operas contain either nothing for flute or else small parts, which in some cases may have been played by oboists doubling on flute.

“The only place where you can ‘eat’ alcohol!”, so says the tagline.

www.beatmag.com

Located in the Kemang area, Alcoholics opened in April. It is a labor of love for the owners, Patrick and Judith Gunadi. Patrick is also the executive chef here, taking his experiences from working at some of Sydney’s renowned restaurants like Bungalow 8, Cine, Planet Hollywood, and Cube Bar. What is most distinctive about Alcoholics is almost all (about 98%) of the food is cooked using some type of alcohol. The use of alcohol in cooking is actually a common practice, especially in Western fare.Wine is a main ingredient in classic dishes such as coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon. Nowadays, beer is widely used to add flavor to meat. Marinating meat in beer overnight makes for a great broiling, grilling or barbecue experience. And adding beer, instead of water, to chili during cooking is quite popular. Wanting to try the unique dishes, we visited Alcoholics recently. The place itself is not too big, but with the vibe

hen the original Magnum Café was opened in Grand Indonesia Shopping Mall a couple of years back, it became quite a sensation. Business was booming, every day you would see the crowd lining up to satisfy their cravings for something sweet. Chocoholics from Jakarta and beyond mourned when the café closed its door. But absence makes the heart grow fonder indeed. Magnum Café has now reopened with a bigger space in the same mall a few months ago. Renamed simply “M Café”, this eatery is continuing to set the trend for delectable desserts in the capital. And this “House of Chocolate” certainly made tons of chocolate fanatics jump for joy.

vanilla ice cream with sea-salt caramel sauce and covered by gold Belgian chocolate. It was an instant hit with the public. Sure enough, the color gold now dominated the plush interior. And M Café wants to please those “Pleasure Seekers” (that’s how they lovingly call the fans of Magnum Ice Cream) even more by creating special desserts which incorporate the wonderful Magnum Gold.

Priced at 45k each, these dishes are quite a masterpiece. Take your pick from the Gold Waffle De Brussels - Belgian waffle with pears, caramel, and chocolate sauce, the Gold Caramel Crumble De Charleroi - apple crumble, caramel, and chocolate sauce, or the Gold Chocolat Crepes De Bruges - Chocolate crepes with whipped cream, caramel, and chocolate sauce. Recently, Wall’s Magnum launched its latest All done with Magnum Gold, of course. Sinfully innovation, the Magnum Gold, a luxuriously soft scrumptious!

Mumford & Sons

Babel

Wonderful Wow Worthy Worthless Worm Fodder

T

hree years on from the runaway success of Mumford & Sons’ debut hoedown Sigh no More and it seems that the old mantra: ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is the blueprint for new LP, Babel from the West London nu-folkies.

While no one expected them to release an experimental dubstep album or a collection of Dolly Parton covers, it would have been nice to see something more than what essentially is “Sigh no More Part 2” – their trademark roots-rocking, technology-spurning sound now responsible for having musically painted themselves into a corner. On a more positive note, there’s no doubting that as role models for tweeny bopper music fans, their hearts are in the right place, and in a climate full of tabloid headlines of music stars behaving badly, it’s refreshing to see a group of guys who look like they work in a family-owned village hardware store circa 1962. Delivered in frontman Marcus Mumford’s moody vocal style, the title track and album opener “Babel” brims with energy, and “Broken Crown” brings lively desperation to the proceedings with more foot-stomping grit and racy use of the f-word. “For Those Below” is a lovely little Simon & Garfunkel esque busker’s ditty that preceeds a cover of the aforementioned pair’s 60’s classic “The Boxer”, and closers “Below My Feet” and “Not With Haste” touch on motifs of dreams and freedom. In comparison, the expletive-laced anthem “Little Lion Man” and the catchy “Thistle and Weeds” were tracks that gave them more of a sense of urgency and passion, which is sadly lacking on Babel – much of the biblical lyrics and finger pickin’ stings ringing inexplicably hollow. Perhaps it’s the formulaic quiet/loud/quiet/loud dynamic of most of the tunes, but the standout tracks are pretty few and far between. That said, none of this is likely to bother die-hard M&S fans or next year’s summer festival goers who will lap up their rustic pop like cider at a harvest festival. Dan Ashcroft

Looper Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller. Writer & Director: Rian Johnson. Cast: Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt. In Looper, critically-acclaimed writer-director Rian Johnson puts together time travel, assassination, and drama in one roller coaster ride of a movie. In 2072, time travel is illegal yet being used discreetly by organized crime to send their enemies 30 years back to be assassinated by a hired gun called a “Looper”. However, the new boss in the future decides to “close the loop”– sending back a time assassin to kill himself. When Joe is tasked with killing his future self, what he doesn’t know is that his future self is fighting to change history as well. Sit back, put on your thinking cap, and get ready to travel though time!

Bachelorette Comedy. Writer & Director: Leslye Headland. Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Adam Scott.

This chick-flick debut from writer-director Leslye Headland is for girls (and boys) who just want to have fun laughing. The film is about the hilarious mishaps between four friends and a wedding dress on the night of a bachelorette party and the lead up to a wedding. Think the Hangover, but with a bunch of chicks instead and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the shenanigans in this flick.

Friends with Kids Drama, Comedy. Writer & Director: Jennifer Westfeldt. Cast: Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, John Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd. The tagline for this film is “Love. Happiness. Kids. Pick Two”, and for those of you who have entered family life, you might consider the statement to be very accurate. In fact, its a story about a close-knit circle of friends having their lives, romances and friendships changed after giving birth to offspring. Audiences and some critics praise it because it portrays modern family-life and friendships very closely. Think carefully about which two you want to bring along: friends, kids, or maybe just a lover.

support of Park(ing) day 2012, the guys at Kopi Keliling decided to launch a mini exhibition called “Playground”. The set theme was “parks as a place for play” and a torrent of submissions came in. Kopi Keliling reached out to a lot of their followers and the results were overwhelming They wanted to derive from the good old days where kids used to hangout at the park and also wanted to see if deep down there is still a longing for spending some time in open spaces

Y

and the answer was a resounding yes! Of course, living in Jakarta, we would do anything for a nice green area to chill in. In conclusion, despite the fact that Jakarta’s parks aren’t the best in the world, deep in the mind of its citizen, an open space is still there and open anytime of the day. We hope all this artwork translates into real open spaces in the city. For more mini exhibitions and info visit www.kopikeliling.com

Her exhibition depicts the struggles and also efforts of individuals like herself along with grunge superstars Navicula to battle the government’s policy forest preservation. Her pictures tell a very cold story of human nature and she hopes that this will open our eyes to the cruelty and move us to take an action. The belief is if that we all do our part, there is nothing we cannot change and fortunately the efforts of volunteers, musicians, artist and everyone in the community is slowly but surely gaining a following and having an impact. Silent Disco

he much anticipate third Silent Disco was back at the Woo Bar. Three DJs playing three different types of music blasting through three different channels. It was like a place with two distinct worlds in a single location. Those who weren’t equipped with headphones are left in an eerie silence amidst a throng of partyheads who were dancing frenetically. But for those who had their headphones on the party was complete raging in their headphones until 2am.
