November Rain, quoted from Axl Rose and his band Guns and Roses’ song, is the perfect way to describe the beginning of this month. Jakarta’s weather has not been doing us many favours, if you wanted to get out on the street, that is, and once more we’re looking at the seasonal flooding that arrives to Jakarta this time of year. But all is not lost, and for many the rainy season brings relief from the scorching days of summer and as they say, a change is even better than a holiday sometimes. The entertainment world is also bringing us some relief in the form of a flood of international artists from boybands to old tigers recently. There is plenty on offer over the next weeks and you can read all about it in the What’s On and HereNow sections inside. We thank all the promoters for risking their time and money to bring to the people of Jakarta quality artists and entertainment. Bless them all, they officially rock! And so do you. Have a great two weeks friends. Wet Jakarta!

TKOL RMX 1234567 his album is a remix, or perhaps a creative complement from the previous ‘The King Of Limbs’ album. Just when people thought that it was still a good album yet less creative, this new remix album might be a good answer to muse both fans and critiques. Thick broken melody, syrupy synth, and galumph beats are heavy and beautiful. ‘Bloom’ remix by Harmonic 313, was like a second soul of the original song, with glitch chug loops and some aquatic horror ambiance. At least this album is enjoyable, in other words, it got me to a higher level of contentment than the The King Of Limbs.

f you need something like The Smiths or Morrissey, The Horrors is the new UK chart climbing palemelody band to listen to. Dark wave, post punk or whatever you call it, Skying landed well into that 80’s heart of yours. Easiest to love is ‘Still Life’ and ‘I Can See Through You’, with catchy repetitive pentatonic slow chants and vocals. These songs are an earful to listen to. Some say their previous album ‘Primary Colours’ was the start of their good music, but I think it’s possible to love The Horrors just by listening to this very album.

azz Goes To Campus (JGTC) is the oldest Jazz festival in the country; it has been around for 34 years. Despite that, the event is organized by young people, from one generation to the next generation of FEUI (Economy faculty of Universitas Indonesia) students, to share their passion in Jazz music, as well as to express creativity, art, and harmony between Jazz lovers. And this event is also a great chance for the winner of the Jazz Goes To Campus competition to show off their skills to other music enthusiasts. Several events related to the Festival started way earlier from late October, such as a children’s workshop, roadshows to Bandung and Lampung, and of course the competition where the winner gets the chance to share the stage with renowned local and international artists on the JGTC Festival. Benny Likumahuwa, Sandy Winarta, and Denny Sakrie will judge the competition finals on November 26th. This time, the JGTC Festival will be celebrated by 25 local and international Jazz musicians, including Barry Likumahuwa, Parkdrive, Glenn Fredly, Gugun Blues Shelter, Idang Rasjidi, Sandy Winarta, and Nouvelle Vague who hails all the way from France. The stages are narrowed down from last year, into only three stages, to be more focused, and to facilitate the audience’s flow from stage to stage. Passer Baroe P

TheOriginal ShoppingDistrict

asar Baru (originally called Passer Baroe when Jakarta was still referred as Batavia) is a nice change from the usual shopping malls located all over Jakarta’s sub districts.Built in 1821, Pasar Baru was the oldest shopping center in Jakarta.Walking along Pasar Baru will makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time with the European and Chinese architectural design on some shop lots, while some others are styled to fit more modern times. Back in the day, people who shopped at Pasar Baru were Dutch people that lived at Jalan Veteran, because it’s a close distance, and it was intended for the elite and rich people that lived nearby, whereas today the clientele is much more diverse. There are still shops that exists from day one until now, like the pharmacy, Kimia Farma, Melati furniture store, and a few other shops. An interesting fact, a shop at Pasar Baru is the very first in Jakarta to have fixed prices for their merchandise, while at that time bargaining was the way to shop in markets in Jakarta.

Pasar Baru is famous for its good quality shoe shops(most of them owned by ethnic Chinese) since the Batavia days. Sapie Le is one of the known shoe craftsmen back then, which services included fixing soldier’s shoes and women’s high heels. Now, the shopping center is also famous for its textile shops, mostly owned by ethnic Indians. Other shops include housewares and accessory shops. Pasar Baru is also a great place for camera enthusiasts. At the end of the street there are a lot of shops selling cameras along with their accessories. From old school analog cameras to high-end, state of the art cameras are all sold there. One side of an intersection dividing the shopping complex leads to the legendary narrow street known as Gang Kelinci. This alley is the place for the legendary noodle eatery “Bakmi Gang Kelinci”. If you’re nostalgic for the past or you’re a new visitor with a passion for historical buildings and all the while have the urge to shop for stuff, come to Pasar Baru! (Dini Siregar)

What music are you into at the moment? James Morrison’s The Awakening. Absolutely amazing voice, lyrics and very relaxing but also upbeat where need be. I have it in my car and at home. What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it? Madonna on LP, her first ever album. Yes, the story is that we finally managed to own a record player in our family home and I went straight out to the second hand record shop and the first record I saw was Madonna’s first ever album which I still own today. Then followed Michael Jackson’s Bad on LP a few months after. What are your all-time favorite album/s? Michael Jackson albums. Through his music he reached out and helped and touched this world. He did so much and he is one of the greatest losses this earth has experienced. Listening to his music always makes me happy and alive and gives me the will to at least try and help others less fortunate. What was the worst record you ever purchased? Hard to say, probably that bad that I forced myself to forget about the fact that I bought it [smile] Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? Maybe a dog and hopefully land in the arms of the right owner, an owner like me spoiling my dogs with toys and snacks every day. I think dogs are more loyal and honest than humans and are certainly our best friends. My dogs make me extremely happy every day of my life. My dogs also have alerted me to danger twice, they are such clever creatures and my heroes. If a person is not whom but when. I would love to live in USA 50’s-60’s, dinners, bikers, rock n’ roll [smile]

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy? Unfortunately I only read newspapers and The Beat Jakarta haha... I am more a movie person so no book at the moment but I have read Dan Brown and I loved them all. What new movie should people see? Why? Captain America (very entertaining). Movies are my passion, unfortunately this column is too small for my answers [smile]. I love movies from all over the world! What album do you choose to start your weekend? Now That’s What I Call Music! 79. Still after all these years it has a variety of the top songs and you find something you like on it. And album you choose to end your weekend? Any album mixed by Claude Challe or the Hôtel Costes albums. Pure relaxing tunes for a Sunday afternoon.

Superman Is Dead:

rio asal Bali yang gaduh diprediksi bakal menjadi grup rock terbesar di tanah air, Superman Is Dead, kembali membuat kejutan mencengangkan. Setelah sebelumnya menjadi artis Indonesia pertama yang sukses menembus ajang peringkat tembang mahsyur, Billboard, kini datang dengan konsep unik: merilis album dalam bentuk piringan hitam. Setelah terakhir kali menerbitkan Angels and Outsiders pada 2009, Superman Is Dead yang notabene berusia 16 tahun pada 2011 ini, bukannya menyodorkan “The Best Of” dalam format biasa. Justru opsi yang dipilih berupa Long Play.

Lumayan panjang prosesnya, minta ijin kesana-kemari, belum lagi perancangan artwork-nya. Karena kami sadar ini—mungkin— akan menjadi projek sekali seumur hidup, kita ingin membuatnya se-solid mungkin agar nanti masuk ke level ‘cult’, layak dikoleksi dan mewakili Superman Is Dead as a whole band/sub-culture,” tambah JRX dengan sumringah. Two years after releasing Angels and Outsiders, the punk rock trio from Bali, Superman Is Dead, will be releasing their next album this month. As a celebration for their 16th year of existence, the group that is predicted by so many music critics to soon become the biggest rock band in Indonesia, will release a “best of” album. The only difference, and unique thing that very few of today’s local bands do, is that the album will be made on vinyl. Titled “1997-2009”, there will only be 1000 copies of the album pressed and it’s also planned to be sold via mail order, among others ways. “Serious fans or avid collectors will go through all the hassle to own this limited album,“ said JRX, the drummer of the band. The artwork for the album is going to be rare too, with classic photos of 70’s Kuta, from where SID hail, included. What are you waiting for? Be a part of history and join their Facebook page and follow their Twitter account for updated news.

Hang over helpers

Ok, so you don’t have a will of steel. You’ve had a little too many drinks last night and now you’re dealing with a horrible headache from hell. I’ve rounded up some hangover cures to get you feeling like your fine self again... Avoid, avoid, avoid!

It sounds silly but the best way to cure a hangover is to avoid getting one in the first place. But if its too late, you can make the next morning somewhat pleasant if... •You drink on a full stomach to slow alcohol absorption. •Consume full fat yoghurt to give the stomach a protective lining. •Take a vitamin called milk thistle before you drink to protect the liver from damage. •Take a decent dose of Vitamin B and C to prepare the body from all the nutrients it’s going to lose over the night.

Once you’ve started

If you’ve already started drinking (lots), not all is lost - there are still a few things you can do. Try alternating hard and soft drinks or just drink slower. Also remember to drink to your size, as there is no point trying to keep up with the girls on the local rugby team. If you want to give your head the best chance in the morning, there are a number of drinks best avoided: sparkling drinks like champagne or rum and coke will take the booze straight to your head, as will cognac, brandy, whisky and red wine. On the other hand - gin and vodka will be kinder to the head. Try Vodka sodas as they are low in calories and easy on the body (as far as alcohol goes).

Rehydrate

We know it, but how often do we ignore it? Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that pounding headaches and dry, fuzzy mouths are partly due to dehydration. Drinking water will help speed your recovery. After a drinking session, try to drink a pint of water before going to bed. If you wake with a hangover, sip water little and often all day and try drinking an isotonic drink or better, a fresh coconut! Stay away from coffee and drinking bloody marys the next morning. They will just make it worse.

Take your vitamins

Just like the money you spend on the booze, vitamins B and C are your body’s currency and oh my will you feel poor in the morning without them. B vitamins are quickly used up as the body processes alcohol in the body. If you don’t have a dose of B vitamin supplements then just stick to Berocca. Take 1g of antioxidant vitamin C three times on the day to swipe all those free radicals.

Road Rage? What Road Rage?

I

saw a strange thing this morning. Waiting to turn right at a crossroads, a local man on his bike next to me started shaking his fist at the three cars coming across from the right who had decided to run the red light. However, it wasn’t the three tailgating cars that was strange, I was more intrigued by the man angrily gesticulating at the bemused drivers. In the five years that I’ve been driving in Bali, I’ve seen more minor traffic offences that one could shake a fist at, but the standard protocol in such situations has always been to shrug benignly and drive off. “There’s no road rage in Bali” people would say, but that would appear to be changing. Chronic traffic jams, dodgy road planning, nightmare U-turns on the bypass, potholes the size of the Grand Canyon and a baffling desire amongst most drivers to get from A to B in the quickest and most dangerous way all add up to one big pressure cooker on the roads of this increasingly busy little island (don’t even get me started on those massive tourist buses). So, for the uninitiated, here’s a set of useful pointers that will hopefully keep you out of the Emergency room. 1: If you really must drive a motorbike, wear a decent helmet. There are two good reasons for this. One is that the police are less likely to stop you and confiscate the contents of your wallet, and the other is that it will stop all the inside bits of your head from being broken should you have the misfortune to fall off. 2: Remember Steve McQueen evading the Nazis on an Enfield Bullet in the Great Escape? You are not Steve McQueen evading the Nazis on an Enfield Bullet in the Great Escape. Your 125cc rented scooter is neither cool, fast or stable. Try to remember that and just cruise, making sure to stick to the left hand side allowing the nutters to overtake (tarmac permitting of course). 3: Never look anyone in the eye. This is a good local trick which seems to absolve drivers from any wrongdoing. This works on policemen too – if you can’t see them, they won’t be able to see you. Trust me it works. 4: The single most important component of your vehicle (bike or car) is the horn. Use it. A lot. 5: Never ever yank the front brake as you’re going around a corner – particularly if there’s loose gravel about (which basically is everywhere) unless you

want your next trip to be the skin graft clinic. 6: For the love of god at least wear a T-shirt – even a Bintang vest if that’s how you choose to live your life. This is not necessarily a safety one nobody wants to see your sweaty sunburnt torso. 7. There’s plenty of time to chat over a nice sunset Bintang, so do everyone a favour and don’t attempt a conversation with your buddy on another bike. 8. If you’re stopped at a red light, keep your front wheel behind the (usually faded) white line. This is a classic police sting operation. 9. Crossing the busy bypass or attempting a U-turn is a terrifying prospect, so do as the locals do and just inch out until the oncoming traffic can no longer swerve around you and is forced to stop. 10. Resist the urge to drive after drinking. At the risk of being called a massive hypocrite here, driving after a heavy night out is really not a good idea. Taxis really aren’t that expensive. 11. Switch off your indicators after a turn. Unlike a car, the indicator lights on a motorbike don’t self-cancel, meaning that half of Bali are driving around with indicators flashing incorrectly.

hat comes into your mind when the word strings comes up? Most people would immediately associate it with violin. However, strings in classical music can also be implemented for other instruments such as piano or a guitar that uses strings as it main part. Both the piano and guitar are pretty much intimate instruments that work fantastically for solo, group ensemble or orchestra. But not many know that the piano alone or a bunch of guitars can be an ensemble of its own and entertain us with a rich range of melodies. A piano that is played by two people, three people or even four people could actually give you less monotone and a more interactive performance to watch. This is the essence that Jelia Megawati Heru has captured and is about to implement in her upcoming performance: “Golden Fingers Piano Ensembles next November 19th at Istituto Italiano Jakarta. Jelia believes that the piano ensemble is not only about playing piano together, but it is an actual effort to liven up the music. About 19 compositions from solo pieces to pieces for two pianos (eight hands) are chosen, featuring the fun fast tempo Leroy Anderson’s “The Typewriter” (for one piano – four hands), Tchaikovsky’s beloved “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” (for two pianos – eight hands) to Astor Piazzolla’s sensual “Libertango” (for two pianos) among others. With 14 talented pianists lining up for this event, we believe that these two-hour long concerts would be very dynamic to watch. Still on strings, the renown classical acoustic guitar group called Opus’78 is also going to show Jakarta’s public how beautiful a guitar ensemble may sound on their upcoming performance called: “Saturday Nite Concert” next November 26th at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

is also an open group and allows anyone to join… anyone that is passionate on the guitar. For this coming concert, Opus’78 prepared an impressive repertoire featuring compositions from Chopin, Jobim Henry Mancini to our legendary composer Ismail Marzuki. Puss in Boots Adventure, Animation, Comedy. Director: Chris Miller. Writers: Will Davies, David H. Steinberg, Tom Wheeler. Cast: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Guillermo del Toro, Amy Sedaris.

This is a cat that I bet you all can recognized. He wields a sword, he’s famous, and he wears boots... Yes, it’s the Puss in Boots you met in Shrek 1-3! In this spin-off movie, the story tells about Puss in Boots long before he met Shrek and his adventures where he turns from an outlaw to a hero, how he became a legend, and how he got the Boots! It’s a flat out hilarious animated movie full of vain Spanish-accented cats and Humpty Dumpty to get you laughing.

A

marone is located in the Hotel Grand Kemang complex, and this new restaurant was opened for business just this past October. Named after a type of dry red wine (Amarone della Valpolicella), this eatery serves quality Italian fare, and then some. The restaurant itself is quite spacious. On the ground level, the dining room can be divided into three different parts: one big area in the middle with an equally huge bar on the side, one smaller area right next to it, and one private room on another side. A juxtaposition of light and dark wood brings about a cozy touch, and is accented nicely by the light blue color of the bar area. There is another spot upstairs, but we’ll get into that a little bit later. A basket of freshly baked home made bread welcomed us on our visit here and we tucked into our orders of appetizers in no time flat. The Quesadillas (50k); stuffed chicken, beef, paprika with tomato brava sauce, and the Bruschetta Alla Veccnia Maniera (40k); four slices of French bread with diced tomato, mushroom, black olive and topped with melted cheese, were excellent starters. Ok, so the Quesadillas are not exactly Italian, but they have become quite a favorite among Amarone’s patrons. Soups, salads, and tapas are also available, among other noteworthy antipasti dishes, to start your wonderful dining experience at Amarone.

As for the main course, the Spaghetti Allo Scoglio (75k) is a great choice: Spaghetti generously topped with prawns, clams, and mussels, served with tomato oregano sauce. This dish is definitely one for lovers of seafood. The Funghi Pizza is another noteworthy dish; a mouth-watering mix of champignon mushroom, tomato, grana padano cheese, cashew, and truffle oil. Yummm… Mamma mia! Feel like having a steak? How about ordering the 400 gr T-Bone Steak (300k), the 700gr Pork Ribs (250k), or the 400 grams Lamb Chop (200k) to satisfy your carnivorous cravings. The numerous selections of grilled fish are also worth trying here.

Amarone has about 900 bottles of wine; it is simply one of the most extensive collections in town. And yes, they do have Amarone wine, directly imported from Valpolicella in Italy. Order a glass of red or white of your choice to compliment your meal. Now let’s talk about the upstairs part of this huge restaurant. The semi outdoor area is perfect for an after office hours hang out or a get together; especially on balmy evenings. The skilled bartenders are more than capable of mixing the tipple of your choice. But one of the signature drinks at Amarone is the unique concoction called Negroni (95k); a classic Italian cocktail, comprised of Martini Rosso, Campari, Gordon’s Dry Gin, soda, and orange peel. The presentation certainly deserved an applause. Simple elegance. Other notable drinks here are the Sangria (120k), Mojito (80), and Mint Julep (80k). And for you teetotalers (or designated drivers), the Tropical Cooler Ice Tea (35k) is a great pick: Black tea and syrup, with slices of fresh fruit, coconut jelly, and mint. Very invigorating. And with these luscious drinks in our hands, we watched the busy Kemang street go by from afar, in the comfort of Amarone’s balcony. Life is good. La vita è bella!

MADAM

KWOK

A new Peranakan restaurant is creating quite a good buzz. And we were there to savor

A

ccording to Wikipedia, Peranakan is a term for descendants of early Chinese migrants who settled in Penang, Malacca, Singapore, and Indonesia, inter-marrying with local Malays. And just like the people, Peranakan (or Nonya) cuisine is a combination of Chinese, Malay and other influences into a unique and appetizing blend. The old Malay word nonya (also spelled nyonya), a term of respect and affection for women of prominent social standing (part “madame” and part “auntie”), has come to refer to the cuisine of the Perakanans.

beatmag.com 058

Nonya cooking is the result of blending Chinese ingredients and wok cooking techniques with spices used by the Malay/Indonesian community. The food is tangy, aromatic, spicy and herbal. Madam Kwok is located at the Rasuna Epicentrum Walk in the area of Kuningan. Since opening its doors to the public in March of this year, Madam Kwok has been getting rave reviews from the hungry public for their unique take on Peranakan favorites.

Food Some friends and I visited Madam Kwok for lunch recently. The interior of this homey eatery looks like a courtyard of a Peranakan house. Vintage windows add an authentic touch, juxtaposing nicely with the modern furniture. Now onto the food; the Jamur Goreng Kering (36k) and the Tahu Kipas Babah (26k) started us off nicely. The former is deep fried mushroom, while the latter is fried tofu, stuffed with a mix of minced beef, leek, carrot, and string bean. You should dip them in the very tasty home made Madam’s Chili Sauce for optimum effect! Next up, the main courses: the beef on the Sate Sapi Malay (52.5k) is well marinated and kept for two days to get that succulent taste.A tangy peanut sauce complimented the satay perfectly. We also ordered the Gurame Babah Masak Garam (80k); scrumptious fried chunks of gurame fish, served with chili mixed with shrimp paste. It’s easy to see how it has become a crowd’s favorite here. But the masterpiece at Madam Kwok must be the Buntut Masak Asam Nonya Kwok (67k)! It’s a nice twist of the old oxtail soup recipe. The herbs and spices blended very well, creating one delicious broth; and the belimbing wuluh is a welcome and refreshing addition to this much loved favorite. Nasi Putih (10k) or plain white rice is available, but we opted for the Nasi Lemak and Nasi Hainan (12k, respectively) for a more authentic experience. The hearty Teh Tarik (20k) is always a good accompaniment to these types of dishes. But you should not miss the delectable desserts at Madam Kwok. The Sari Rang Kayo (32k) is a wonderful mélange of tastes. We have another work of art here. The sweet Kaya is blended with banana, topped with strawberry slices and served with vanilla ice cream. The Es Sambut Kota Kembang (28k) is a cool concoction of crushed ice with syrup, young coconut, coconut jelly, and fruit cocktail. And the rich Es Durian Pengat (36k) will surely satisfy all you fans of the king of fruit.

If you’re looking for a unique taste of Peranakan in Jakarta that is affordable and appetizing, make sure you pay Madam Kwok a visit. And for us, a second visit here is already in the works! ashion and us, women, are two inseparable things. We cannot live without expressing and identifying ourselves through what we wear and, admit it, we sometimes can be obsessed with it. However, not many of us exactly understand how fashion products are made, and what impact it makes to poor Mother Nature. Did you know fashion is one of nature’s biggest concerns, both in Indonesia and the world? beatmag.com 060

Eco-friendly fashion must be enforced stronger. Unfortunately, to many fashion-lovers, eco-fashion is still a strange concept. To change that and help greenify the fashion parts of our life, Enviloka (an eco-foundation) and Leo Cosmo Jakarta Teens (a youth social organisation) collaborated to create ECONIC, a two-day eco-fashion awareness event held on 21-22 October 2011, which programs consists of: 1. Eco-Friendly Fashion Design Competition A month before the event, ECONIC’s committee spread the news of the design competition to fashion design schools and institutes, and as a result, they’re flooded by loads of amazing

Style submissions. But what exactly were they looking for in the eco-friendly design? At ECONIC’s press conference, ECONIC’s project officer and Enviloka’s committee head Futri Zulia explained the nine focal points: • Local – do you realise, that by buying imported products, you have contributed in fuel emissions for the transport? By choosing local products, fuel emissions for long haul transport is cut down. Think about it. • Recycled or reused textiles – using scraps of old fabrics will not only lessen waste, but, in my opinion, also push you to be more creative. Mother Nature would be so proud. • Sustainable fashion (materials and process) – good eco-fashion clothes are made using organic raw materials, such as cotton grown without pesticides or silk made by worms fed on organic trees. • Vegan / animal free – needless to say, animal testing and using animal parts are huge crimes in fashion and beauty industry, and there is never any justification for those acts. Please do your research first before buying a brand. • No chemicals used / low impact / vegetables dying – yes, it is indeed possible to use vegetative or natural colours to dye your clothes. Much, much more eco-friendly and sustainable than chemical ones. • Fair trade – aside from animal testing, you should also choose brands that practice fair trade, such as giving fair wages to their workers and banning child labour.

• Craft – artisan and custom – you can never have enough batik, songket, and other traditional fabrics. Buying or using them not only helps preserve our heritage, but it also means supporting home industries that are low energy and much ecofriendlier than mass, factory-made products. • Vintage / second hand – no need to automatically throw away your last season’s clothes! It could be trending again. Remember, fashion rotates. Conversely, buying or getting secondhand clothes is eco-friendlier than buying new pieces. • Resource efficiency – this means that in producing clothes, one should always be conscious with its resource efficiency. Be aware of the water and energy usage. For months, the committee has received numerous submission, which all comes down to 18 finalists who produce their designs and flaunt them on the fashion show. 2. Fashion Show ECONIC’s fashion show was sprawled into two days, featuring young designers such as TIKShirt, Geulis, Nikicio, and Vera Abi. However, the main stars of the fashion shows are the 18 finalist of ECONIC’s Eco-Friend Fashion Design Competition, who showcased their competing designs for the judges to see. I happened to come on Saturday’s fashion show event, therefore I got to see TIKShirt, Geulis, Vera Abi… I would say that it’s more than a fashion show, as the event also put some of Jakarta’s renowned musicians on their stage, including Twentyfirstnight, Soulvibe, and Maliq & The D’Essentials. In addition to that, the ticket sales would be donated wholly to social causes. Although I could see that the fashion shows were not professional ones per se, the clothes were well-flaunted and the message was well-conveyed: local and eco-friendly products are just as amazing and comparable to international ones. At the end of the day, Anisa Dilla Qolbi from Universitas Sebelas Maret (2nd runner-up), Eka A.P from Kriya Tekstil ITB (1st runner-up), and Budi Ramadhan from Kriya Tekstil ITB (1st winner) proved that with their stunning designs. 3. Bazaar ECONIC also set up booths where local designers and brands, especially those who are eco-friendly, could sell their products. Vendors include Nikicio, Kaia, SPADA, Mishoundtooth, Zaakunika and many more (check out our picks here!). Aside from displaying their products for the guests, they also got new knowledge of eco-friendly fashion from the event.

New Beauty Products Landed in Jakarta It’s always exciting talking about new beauty products. For a makeup junkie, this year wasn’t so bad at all because unlike last year, many new collections actually came to our shores! Below, I’ve picked three of the latest makeup launches that are now available in Indonesia.

1. Cle de Peau Beaute Rich Shimmery 2011 Makeup Collection This is one of the luxury makeup brands that is finally available in Indonesia late last year. They have a superb base collection which many people rave about. But one thing is for sure, if you see Japanese makeup brand launches, you will see how they will try to capture a woman’s natural beauty with simple and more translucent colours. With the Cle de Peau Beaute 2011 makeup collection, even though the colours are more on the neutral side for the eye makeup colours, they are still rich with shimmer that creates shine which reminds you of the light reflection from precious stones. The texture of the eye makeup is lustrously dewy and light. There are two palettes available; 206 Malachite (transparent green) and 207 Kyanicite (rich blue shade, shown on the picture above). There are also seven new extra rich lipsticks available with dreamlike smooth texture as well as three new extra silky lipstick. 2. Make Up For The ‘Animal Instinct’ Look I haven’t exactly recuperated from their Smokey Eyes collection, and now they come out with this one. I don’t know whether I should be cheering with joy or getting an anxiety attack on deciding

which collection I should get my hands on. The Wild & Chic collection comes with one palette and four different makeup sets. The one that I’m eyeing for from this collection is the palette that is housed in a black snakeskin packaging with lovely green and brown eyeshadows. There’s a pink eyeshadow that really intrigues me on how this pink shade will work with the whole look. Another set that I would totally recommend is the Aqua Cream and Aqua Eyes set that includes a taupe cream eyeshadow. Also available from this collection is the Lab Shine, Aqua Eyes and Aqua Cream set that comes with miniaudiere in joyful colours. 3. Make Up Store Pure Like Winter Colours Hailing from the very cold side of the world, Sweden, they’re bringing in their latest winter collection that represents the cool elegance and Nordic pureness. Their eyeshadow comes in a very pigmented and easy to blend singles and with this new collection three new Microshadows and one Cybershadow will be available. My favourite colour would be Boheme, a muted purple. Highlighting on the dewy and luminous skin and mix of pink and purple nuances, this colour is for those who want to look clean and defined.

Traditional Music Workshop: Exploring Music Exploring Indonesian Culture Instructors: Endo Suanda (traditional dancer and musician, ethnomusicologist and arts observer/ researcher), Rizaldi Siagian (musician and ethnomusicologist), Agus Nur Amal (actor) Music has been a part of culture since long ago and have also been interwoven with the social and spiritual systems of the Archipelago. “Reading” music can become one means to understand Indonesia and its diverse cultures. To be able to “read” music, we need a set of “viewfinders” in the form of methodological corridors that grow out of knowledge and experience. This traditional music workshop will be presented in an interactive and participative way of mixing concepts and practice, providing listening, seeing, feeling and making experiences. This workshop will be conducted in Indonesian. Serambi Salihara Jl.Salihara No.16, Pasar Minggu, Jakarta Selatan 12520

Relax,

the Reality is Being Fixed by Ana

As

a professional model who works on the international stage, Anastasia Titova (Ana) rarely stays at her home village in Belarus. Since she was a little girl, Ana has been moving from one country to the next. At sixteen, she began her career as a model in Paris, and from that time on she has always been staying in different cities, different countries. In 2005, she visited Jakarta for a short while, but then came back and stays there to this day. While residing in Jakarta, she often traveled with her husband, visiting places that she found intriguing and snapping photographs of the things that catch her fancy. When she was examining her pictures, Ana felt that something was missing. She then tried to fill that vacuum with images she took from the magazines she had at home. She then discovered how the photographs, on which she glued the various cut pictures, were transformed and presented new narratives. Ana’s collage works remind us of an early work of pop art and shows how the use of collage represents a certain symptom in the dreams of the industrial society. Ana’s photo-collage also uses glue and pictures cut from the magazine. She made all the collage manually before scanning and enlarging them and then printing them on photographic paper, thus creating works with flat surfaces. As someone constantly living in transitional spaces, Ana certainly has her own vision about a whole, unspoiled world. There is no such thing as a perfect reality, but for Ana, the collages work, and are able to establish a united world consisting of fragments of a range of cultures, societies, and eras—all of them coming together in an arrangement of images. Ana’s photo-collages are able to compress the diverse realities of time and space and uses this to help us discover hidden urban corners in juxtapositions or in parallel conditions. As one examines the works further, one by one, we might discover places that we have visited or passed by. We might also find it difficult to recognize these images and sense that somehow we have known them before.

Now You Can See It,

ThePoems K

risna Murti likes doing experiments, exploring themes that have never been raised before. Now he has decided to make a collaboration to seek the possibility of tracing the relationship of audio-visual work and poetry with Hanna Fransisca, a poet from Singkawang (West Kalimantan). Her poetry often uses simple metaphors related to food and cooking though she actually talks about things that are very serious such as loyalty and love to the motherland.

Poet’s Shop was chosen as the title of this art project because it conveys irony or parody of the market phenomenon. It is obvious that poetry is far from market collateral. In daily life, advertising, bumper, dawah, entertainment, etc., have taken over the role of poetry and they appear as “electronic poets” or “digital shamans”. The word ‘shop’, which means a place for selling goods and services, the tangible and intangible, the literal and symbolic, is worth borrowing to carry her purpose. This shop is like a showroom for the modern concept of teleshopping marketing. Being held inside a mall, the exhibition seems to make the shops inside it become “entry points” or psychological “conditioning” for the audience before entering the “art zone” of Poet Shop. Then, the audience is guided to enter the artistic and personal zone to come close to the objects of art, video works, print works, audio works that stimulate them to use all their senses and to experience gray areas among them. Everything is intended as a process of personal communication. Just take a look a bit and then close your eyes and just listen to the sound of “Kursi Merah Mendaras”. In the mini installation work titled “Secangkir

Teh” (A Cup of Tea), you can see a chain of media sconsisting of video, found objects and typography. This work wants to invite you to have an experience with poetry; not only by reading and listening but also by seeing. The work titled “Penyair dalam Wastafel” stimulates us to activate our senses and to experience the limits of the physical existence of coral, fish and algae that represent the body of Hanna – the body of a poet, an actor and a symbol. Then, enjoy other explorations to her poems on Krisna’s other works and celebrate the world of shop today. Hopefully you can get a bonus by indulging yourself here at the Poet’s Shop.

bali Scoop Triumphant Bali Chefs Young Balinese chef, Dias Raditya Widjaja and a team consisting of Helmy Wijaya, Mardhika Prasetya, and Nugraha Homan represented Bali splendidly by securing a silver medal and the highest point score for their performance at the Salon Culinaire Malaysia 2011 held in Kuala Lumpur. Representing the Bali Culinary Professional Association, the trio of chefs came to the competition with knives in hand and pots a blazing to beat out over 27 competitors from local and international hotels, restaurants and educational institutions. Culinaire Malaysia is the region’s largest culinary competition and is held in conjunction with the Food & Hotel Malaysia Exhibition (FHM). Held on a biannual basis, this year’s Culinaire Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center attracted over 1,500 participating entries worldwide.

Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions 2011 The tournament is over and Ana Ivanovic has succeeded in defending her title. She came to Bali as one of two wildcard entries and won two straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 against Anabel Medina Garrigues in the tournament winning the grand prize of $210,000. On the first set, Medina gave her finest performance and made Ivanovic work really hard making her chase the ball. But in the second set, she lost her concentration. This win was special for Ivanovic because it’s right on her 24th birthday. She said that she’s so happy with this win but also a bit sad because this year’s tournament is the last one in Bali. Next year this event will be held in Bulgaria. She expressed hope that there will be a new tournament in Bali again in the future because she loves Bali and the people. Ivanovic believes that this win is an excellent start for her to regain her previous first place ranking. On the other hand, Anabel Medina Garrigues complimented her opponent and said that Ana was playing solid and was extremely difficult to beat during the match.

It’s dead easy to get to and as a matter of fact, so worth the trip. The space upstairs has plenty of room and is partly covered and partly open to the stars. There’s a chill out area on one side with comfy sofas, a bar at the end with a pool table area, and the main dining space is both covered and open air. According to chef, Dean Fisher, all the seafood comes fresh from the Jimbaran fish markets every day. Since he lives down that way he picks it up himself every day on the way to work. “I’d like to live up this way (Seminyak) but it’s really difficult to find, or

There was also a giant screen that played classic 70s videos which pushed the nostalgia factor into overdrive. Flower Power is on again on Thursday November 17.
