2014 has now left the room and is slotted sweetly into our memory banks of life. It was an interesting year with many changes in the political landscape of the country and also in the city. Jokowi wasn’t exactly swept to power as many had predicted at the beginning of the year but in the end made his way to the presidential palace to usher in a major change in this country’s political history. For the first time a new president was elected that wasn’t aligned with either the military or religious sides of government and appeared ready to sort out some of the long-term issues plaguing the country. We continue to wish him well in that endeavor. Nightlife in the city also appeared to make a major shift this year with the closing of two mainstay venues, Stadium and Red Square. Both venues were dear to the heart of many regular party people and with them it appeared also went house music. Commercial EDM appears to have taken over most venues, and music festivals, and combined with the plethora of new LED panels behind the DJs and decks, it now seems like flashing billboards promoting whatever it is from events to beer buckets is now the norm while party lighting effects and particularly darkness has been thrown out the window. Personally, as you may well know, I’m not a great fan of commercial EDM but many appear to be liking it. I recall a conversation not long ago with someone in DF and mentioning the popular, house driven club in Bali, Jenja, and she saying it’s nice but the music is so slow. At the time this banging commercial EDM was coming out of the speakers and I then realized just how far this music had taken over everything and everywhere in South Jakarta. Call me an out-of-touch Philistine perhaps, but I for one am putting my hand up to complain. So for my New Year’s resolution 2015 it would have to be a wish to see the return of decent house music to the clubs. SCOOP 2PM re-scheduled tour After devastating their Indonesian fans by canceling their show last month, massive Korean boyband hit, 2PM, is set to make things right. This time their “Go Crazy” concert has been rescheduled to be held on March 28, 2015 in Istora Senayan. Fans who bought tickets for the cancelled show - approximately 5,000 of them - will be able to attend the March concert. 2PM are June K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho and Chansung, and their fans are called “Hottest”.
Hammersonic 2015 Jakarta’s annual metal music festival, Hammersonic, is coming back again on March 8. The fourth edition of the festival will bring in international metal bands such as Lamb of God, Terrorizer, Unearth, Warbringer, Inlander, Fraud, Trashline. SCOOP Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival The Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival is one of the largest jazz festivals in the world. Throughout the first 10 years, the festival has presented names such as the late James Brown, Incognito, Santana, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Lisa Stansfield, Craig David, and so many more. Indonesian artists also play a very big role in the success of each annual festival, and through it, the Festival has presented names like Dira Sugandhi, Raisa, Barry Likumahuwa, Addie MS Family. This year, the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival will be held on March 6 to 8. A few international artists including Christina Perri have already confirmed to take part. Local musicians that will perform include Tohpati, Endah n Resha, Sheila Majid, and Ermy Kulit.
Lenny Kravitz American singer Leonard Albert Kravitz aka Lenny Kravitz will throw a concert in Jakarta to promote his latest album Strut, which is amongst Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2014. His concert is set to take place in Istora Senayan on March 26 for about two hours with him performing 16 tracks from his latest album. Six thousand tickets will be sold, and presale starts at Rp 770k available at www.rajakarcis.com. In his music, he mixes various elements such as rock, soul, R&B, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk and ballads. He won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row from 1999 to 2002.
Salihara Jazz Buzz 2015 Salihara Jazz Buzz is a small annual festival in the Community of Salihara. The event shall feature some of the best jazz musicians in the country in a series of concerts designed to appeal to fans of jazz music, especially the younger crowd. Various innovative new compositions and fresh, intelligent and exploratory tracks, played with technical expertise and high artistic sensibility. Salihara Jazz Buzz “yang Muda Yang NgeJazz” will be held from February 14 to 15 and 20 to 21 at Teater Salihara in Pasar Minggu. Botnek is a DJ/production duo from Montreal, Canada, and their unique style and productions take influence from electro house, rave and techno. They gained attention of the electronic music scene after winning a remix competition for Dim Mak Records, for Felix Cartal’s single “Skeleton”. Aside from releasing their EP entitled Plonk in 2011, the duo have completed remixes for big names including Mat Zo & Porter Robinson, and Steve Aoki. Ever since being described by Armin van Buren as a modern day Mozart, Andrew Rayel has been rising higher into the sky than he could have ever imagined. The Moldovan producer/ DJ is known for his huge hits on the dance floors such as ‘Dark Warrior’, ‘EIFORYA’, ‘One in a Million’, ‘Aeon of Revenge’, ‘550 Senta’, ‘How Do I Know You’ and many more. There hasn’t been a single lapse of energy from this young man, his road to success has just begun and his future looks brighter than ever! We sent him a few questions before he gets to Jakarta to play Colosseum on January 23. Hey Andrew, thanks for taking your time for this interview. Where are you right now and what can you see outside the nearest window? Hey, Thanks for having me! Right now I’m in my studio, just got back home to Moldava from my tour in Australia and South Africa, and leaving back on Thursday for Tel Aviv, London, and Glasgow. After hearing many of your tracks, one notices the use of beautiful classical harmonies; do you have a background with classical music? Yes I do! I was enrolled in a classical musical school when I was a kid after my parents noticed that I might have musical talent. It was something that I fell in love with and having a good educational musical background has helped me a lot in my career. What was your first big breakthrough in the electronic music world? My track “Aether” which was the first tune of the week that I got from Armin Van Buuren on his radio show A State Of Trance.
What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far? Several memorable moments to be honest…. The release of my debut artist album Find Your Harmony, being voted in DJ MAG for the first time, being on the shoulders of Armin Van Buuren during our track collaboration “EIFORYA”, as well as the two incredible album release party shows which we did in my home country Moldova and another at Ministry of Sound in London. What does EDM mean to you? EDM is a world which includes nothing but love, harmony, melodies, and happiness all around. Are there any producers/DJs that have influenced you in your career? For sure: Armin Van Buuren, Hans Zimmer, ATB. What would you be doing if being a superstar DJ wasn’t your job? I would be an accountant. Have you been to Jakarta before? What have you got planned here in Indonesia apart from the big show at Colosseum? I have, and it was one of the most amazing times…It was ASOT650, and WOW what a night and what a crowd. Have something planned for sure, but why spoil the surprise when you can wait and see… It’s worth the waiting. With all the success you had recently, where do you see yourself in five years from now? I honestly don’t know… It’s a hard question which everyone asks, but for sure it includes me working harder every day on achieving bigger goals and success in my career, that I can say. www.beatmag.com

The Beat’s SDW got hold of Lani Leyli, lead singer and front person of the band to find out the what they’ve been up to recently.

SDW: Has Volts been playing much lately? Lani Leyli Volts: Yeah we’ve been doing a few end of school kinda gigs this month. And we played the Youth Fair Parade. Fun stuff. Much original stuff? We usually mix half and half depending on the audience. If it’s for high school kids we play the

singles we’ve already released but if it’s for the indie crowd then we play our new songs that we haven’t had a chance to record yet. Have you recorded much before? We’ve released three singles in Indonesia and one in Sydney. Unfortunately after that our label went bankrupt so yeah still working on getting our album together when we have the time. And how about other things, what else are you up? Me? I have the acoustic band Icons, Volts and I do live PA and DJ. Anything with music involved, I’m up for it. And how long has Volts been together? Since the start of 2012. What are the biggest show Volts has played? At the end of last year we did a 10 city tour of Java with Noah. From Jakarta to Malang. We were supposed to do 15 but unfortunately (or fortunately) the dates coincided with gigs we had in Jakarta. And how many people were at the Noah shows? The smallest was about 7000 and the biggest 18000 but I forget which city that was. I just remember their manager telling us. The craziest was Kediri where they had a massive Volts banner with our photos on it and they all knew our second single and sang it back to us. Who are the members of the band? And who writes the songs? Volts are me, Lani (vocals), Onesh (guitar), Jami (guitar), Vetto (bass), and Davi (drums) who just officially joined us mid 2014. Usually Jami writes the music, I do lyrics if it’s English or with him if it’s Indonesian. Vetto and Onesh can also write but we haven’t recorded their songs yet.
How did your singles go? Did they sell much? We didn’t put them up for sale but all three got to number 1 in different cities’ radio charts. The second single was the best. Number 1 in a few Jakarta stations too. How about putting the tracks on these new online digital platforms that sell local music like guvera.com. Sorry they’re already on melon and iTunes. How well do they sell online. Is it really possible to sell music nowadays? I don’t have the reports of how sales are online but I doubt it’s a whole lot cause if you google the name of any song or artist free mp3s pop up everywhere. Especially in Indonesia. We’ve found heaps of compilations in stores with our singles on them. All pirated. Also with people being able to download songs straight from YouTube it’s just getting harder and harder. Does it all come down to playing live these days? Yeah I think playing live is definitely where musicians get their living now. Unless they’re already as big as Metallica of course, people will always buy their albums. For musicians outside Indonesia (and other countries that don’t have easy access to pirated music) I think iTunes and other online music stores have been great cause it’s so quick and easy compared to searching for free downloads. I guess half the people wouldn’t think twice. What kind of electronic music do you play out? I like trance best but I play almost whatever the club/event asks for. teadily Jakarta has seen an influx of big-time international DJs firing up its local dance floors. Responsible for managing and bringing in plenty of those DJs are Darshan and Christian. While Darshan has had experience in DJ bookings since 2007, their collaboration took off in 2011 with Christian bringing in his network with the local clubs and corporate clients into the mix. In September 2014 they formally formed HYPE management. TBJ recently sat down with them to get the lowdown on the evolution of electronic music in Indonesia, what EDM is about, and some tips for local DJs.

FEATURE Can you tell us about the evolution of electronic music in Indonesia throughout the years? Chris: EDM is growing rapidly and going mainstream, which means this industry is going to be here for a while. During my time in Illigals (2011) it was big on trance. 2013 saw a rise of commercial EDM, and now deep house is emerging. The evolution of new artists is clearly showing its colors in the industry. Just look at Oliver Heldens, he is bridging that underground sound to mainstream, it’s incredible. And now deep house, nu disco, techno is getting bigger and bigger. We need to thank Eric Prydz for making the underground scene in America so big. What he has done is simply BRILLIANT! Look at his EPIC 3.0 concert. The visuals, the music, the lasers will blow your mind. Darshan: When I started in 2007, dance music was still underground. It was totally different from what it is now. Despite all the negative things people say about commercial EDM Music, but that made the dance scene so BIG! People will start listening to the commercial stuff as its top 40 hits; great to sing along, but in time they will listen to other genres too. Without mentioning names, do you guys remember some of the craziest, weirdest, and wackiest rider you have seen? Darshan: HAHA, I like this, since DJs are no longer just DJs, some have come up with wacky riders like a request for cake and even a small rubber boat. What were some of the hardships/ difficulties that you guys had to face? What is Hype Music about? Darshan: Many people might think that this business is sexy and cool. Truth of the matter is that it is a tough ride. We are challenged everyday in bringing the best artists to best suit each of our clients. HYPE is all about bringing hype.. Chris: Aside from our core business in DJ bookings, we are in evolution to branch out
in 2015 into artist management, creating concepts for our local artists (something like Trio Lestari) and as event/concept provider for corporate clients. What is your definition of EDM? Is it a different breed of electronic music? Chris: For me, EDM is simply dance music, plain and simple. It’s been EDM ever since dance music was born. EDM is evolving and became a new breed because of the advancement in technology available right now. Darshan: A lot of people think EDM is the commercial sound like Hardwell, and David Guetta but NO! EDM is dance music in general. techno, house, nu disco.. it’s all electronic dance music. You guys have been in touch with some of the best DJs in the world, what are your tips for Indonesian DJs to make it big internationally, to aim for a spot in DJ Mag top 100? Chris: To concentrate in developing your music and learning a new curve. You have to evolve and be able to adapt and play different genres. I see many of our local heroes being trapped in gigs. Darshan: Make music and more music! A lot of the local DJs have so many gigs locally that they don’t really think of their career. You don’t need to aim for top 100, some of the best DJs in the world are not even in top 100. I see a lot of Indonesian DJs with potential, it’s hard to get your tracks to Spinnin, Revealed, and Armada but you just gotta keep trying and keep making music. It’s easy to play the top 40, but to adapt to a new sound that’s the challenge. Are you opening for a DJ? Or playing an early set? What style do you have to play if you open for a DJ? For example we saw Nervo the other day in Singapore, she played at 10pm, with a set different from festivals. They played more deep house, they made people dance.. thats how its supposed to be done.

Stars and Rabbit are a special duo made up of singer Elda Suryani and guitarist Adi Widodo. They are a little quirky, they play intelligent music and for two people on stage they have quite a presence that cannot be denied. Before hitting The Beat Room stage on January 15 we decided to find out a little bit more of this collective that could well go all the way. The Beat: Hi Adi and Elda. Tell me something about Stars and Rabbit. Elda Suryani: I’m the singer and write all the lyrics for Stars and Rabbit. Adi Widodo: Stars and Rabbit is like a family for me and I think we are connected in the music. How did you meet and when? Elda: We were friends a long way before we started out in music together three years ago. I knew him from my ex-boyfriend. They hung out all the time and played music together. I think I met him at one of those hangouts.

How old are you both now? Elda: We’re both 31 years old. How would you describe your music? Elda: To me it’s sort of my sanity. Making music makes me aware of where I stand. Some people call our music pop folk. For me personally, it’s everything I listen to. A little bit of folk, alternative, 90s vibe, but mostly pop. It has become our own genre I think. Adi: My music is my own visualisation on how I see the world, to express my life experiences and yeah, the music soothes me. I really love ambient music, post rock, folk, mostly I’m listening to all genres of music.
FEATURE What are the lyrics about? And who writes them? Adi: Elda writes all the lyrics. Elda: What are the lyrics about? Mostly about how I coped with my relationships and other things happening during the bad times.
What are your greatest music influences? Adi: I like Iwan Fals, Coldplay, Radiohead and many more. Elda: Sia, Tegan and Sara, Vanessa Carlton, Copeland, etc
Have you been in other bands before starting up Stars and Rabbit? Adi: Yes I had another band called The Review and I’ve played with many other bands, as an additional member or session musician. Elda: Lots of them.
You plan to release an album this year. When will that be and what’s it all about? Elda: According to the timeline, we’ll be launching it by March 2015. We plan to do some promo tours and we’ll see how far it goes from there.
How about recording? Have S&R recorded much music? Elda: There is a full album in progress. There’s enough for an album. But we keep writing as much as we can. It’s what we do.
And all the tracks have been recorded? Are there new tracks onboard? Adi: Yes of course. It’s your first album right? Adi: Yup.
What was the best concert or show you were involved in during 2014? Elda: The best concert this year would have to be FKY (Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta). It was a good vibe, good sound and the moon was perfectly watching over the top. Adi: I can’t pick one, every show has its excitement, and I find new experiences in every city, so every place is special for me.
So I presume it’s a retrospective of the past three years music. Adi: Yup... Kind of.
Where does the name Stars and Rabbit come from? Elda: The name is something I made up for my Twitter account years before the band was born.
How far do you think S&R will go in the future? Where do you think you will be at the end of this year? Elda: As far as my mind goes. Traveling around. Try to get bigger in some places where people appreciate our music.
What has been the biggest break the band has had since forming? Elda:b I guess the biggest break came when somebody from the UK wanted to interview us for their online magazine just because she found us on Facebook and listened to our Myspace tracks and got excited about it. I never thought that this music could actually find a life abroad. It gave me such optimism for what I do and believe in. Adi: I don’t know, so far so good. But I found new things in the process of making the album, new tricks, met new people at every gig, and the whole thing is awesome.
And I notice you have some tracks with a full band. Is the album with the duo or a complete band sound? Elda: Both. To me it’s an expansion of what we want to experience from each song.
Travelling around where? Are there tours planned? Elda: We would love to travel around Europe, but for now, Asia is on our wish list. You can catch Stars and Rabbit live at the next Beat Room on January 14 at Fez Dungeon, Kemang.

Tinder to Mingle Swipe to right, swipe to left. Meet a hugely popular way to meet potential dates.
For
most people, bars and clubs is the ideal place to exchange heat between two consenting adults or to find future house-sharers, but for others, loud music and diffidence may hinder that outcome. So what do they do about it? That’s what dating apps are for, silly. This “phenomenon” is nothing new - the advent of the internet and the millennial generation that was borne out of it ensures that finding soul mates can be just a click away. And since the arrival of Tinder, the dating app has gotten a new face. These days, spotting man/woman/ boy/girl/toddler playing with their cell phones is like finding hay in a haystack. With the abundance of apps for everything, who needs going out? And chances are, that hunk/cutie sitting in the table next to you is swiping left

and right to find—fingers crossed—a soul mate (instead of looking, say, at you). But, yes, undoubtedly, Tinder is so popular that other apps would try to emulate its technique— swipe right to “like”, left to “dislike”—and that reviewers would describe the next offerings as “Tinder-like apps”. (A little trivia: there are even Tinder-like apps for dogs—that is, to help the adoption of many masterless best friends of man. Noble.) So what exactly drives the young’uns to Tinder? No unanimous reason. Initially, it was for instant hook-ups (for that quickie around lunch time), finding a future spouse, and, for a small group of people, to build a network of interesting people. “I mean, you can’t really stop people in the streets to get
FEATURE to know them,” says one Tinder user, Chika, 29. “Even though I had my shares of odd dates (and the ones who specifically asked for sex I immediately reject—I’m a respectable woman, sir!), I have gained some friends from Tinder. Now I have a chef friend who once invited me to the opening of this new restaurant he worked in—and recommends me great places to get a tattoo!” For the uninitiated, Tinder allows you to chat with potential mates only if you both “like” each other’s profile. So, yes, better get your game face on! Some opponents lament such superficiality; further perpetuating the “beauty above all else” mating approach. On the other hand, as one psychologist puts it, how is that different from meeting people in bars or clubs? You know what they always say: love at first sight (not first smell or intellect)—and Tinder ideally perpetuate that maxim. Of course, telling a story of how it was love at first sight when I saw his/her pic in Tinder isn’t as romantic as saying the same thing in real life on a pink-colored beach (and she was wearing
a sexy-as-hell pink dress!), but the millennials and the shys march on, dominating the 50 million active Tinder users around the world who check their account 11 times on a daily basis. While nothing will replace a good night out and meeting a new partner through mutual friends or being at a place of mutual interest and especially after a couple of drinks, these kind of apps do provide a service for some. Ultimately, simplification is the word. “Usually, in dating websites you fill in numerous details about your life: what you like and dislike, your favorite moments in a day, your philosophy, et cetera,” says Joana, 28, another avid Tinder user. “But seriously - do people actually bother to read it?” Not so long ago, they actually did...

Ananda Sukarlan, Clara and A Whole New Year! H
ello classical music lovers! Welcome to my first classical music review/preview in 2015 and allow me to start it with the review of Ananda Sukarlan’s end of year world’s premiere opera Clara. Taking place in December 13 and 14 last year, Clara is definitely Ananda’s first full on tragedy opera. With the background of Jakarta’s infamous 1998 riot where many Indonesians, Chinese women in particular, were the victims. In this opera, we are following the story of an Indonesian – Chinese girl named Clara who was one of the victims in this dark tragedy.

Written as short story by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, Clara is transformed into opera by Ananda Sukarlan under the request of National Commission for Violence to Women. In this 40-minute performance, Ananda brought our memory back to the cause of the riot and the actual incident itself through the eyes of a policeman, Clara and her father. The illustrious yet melodious tunes with a tempo switch from melancholic to somehow anxious was the opening overture. This continuous motif that last till the end is really showcasing Ananda’s typical originality where elements of romance
CLASSICAL and pain were taking turns wrapped in the contemporary sound. There are so many refreshing and innovative parts about this opera that can be highlighted. I was in particular impressed on how Chendra Panatan as stage director create the set with incredible lighting moods to bring the 1998 riot scene back to life. From putting a real car on stage, staging pyro technics, to the disturbing yet poetic choreography of the rape scene, Chendra has successfully evoked a disconcerting feeling of the audience. It is also interesting to see Ananda’s minimalist and innovative approach on the music itself. Only key instruments such as piano, English horn, cello, and percussion that were on stage accompanied with a keyboard player that has the rest of instruments on recording. In a time of a staggering economy, this approach is actually more efficient. The innovation also goes to the music composition where some unusual musical instruments such as the angklung bamboo, a group of drummers from Jakarta Drum School, and an Aboriginal indigenous didgeridoo were implemented. The disturbing riot scene won’t be as haunting as it was if it wasn’t for the continuous wavering sound from the didgeridoo. Furthermore, Ananda also added music clips from one of Beach Boys’ song: “God Only Knows What I’d Be Without You”, that was put in the scene when Clara was driving home and the riot started. Is it unusual for opera? Definitely! On the downside, I wasn’t really convinced with the soft romantic motif in Clara post riot scene where she just literally got raped severely. In a way, the music in this scene was undermining the gravity of the rape incident itself. Isyana Sarasvati as the young soprano who became
Clara seemed unsure on how to portray this situation. Her post rape act is more like someone who suffers from stomach cramp and her high notes were more like gasping shrieks. Another uninspiring performance also came from tenor Ivan Subuhwanto who portrayed Clara’s father. As last minute substitute (replacing the 19years-old tenor Nikodemus Lukas who resigned three weeks before the opening), Ivan was not only trapped on Ananda’s difficult composition, but his act was also far from convincing as Clara’s father. Fortunately, the opera still had tenor Widhawan Aryo Prahitna who performed as the policeman and literally gave us a worldclass performance! Overall, Clara is definitely a fresh of breath air to Indonesia operatic repertoire, though the topic is very niche to Jakartans only. Having said that, I believe that this opera would be more enjoyable, if the long arias were shorter so it gets more brisk and exciting. Still, I would like to congratulate Ananda Sukarlan and the whole team for finally producing this opera. Based on my personal experience, it is never easy to produce any opera. As with Ananda Sukarlan, allow me to share you the preview of his upcoming Jakarta New Year Concert with theme: “Havin’ a Good Time!” Taking place at Teater Kecil in Taman Ismail Marzuki, on this coming January 11, this year‘s annual concert will be an intimate piano concert where Ananda will perform with the youngest winners from last year Ananda Sukarlan Award, Olivia TS and Hamond Rahardjo (both eight years old) from Surabaya. Expect to see live chit chat with the maestro himself as well as four-hand and even six-hand performances at this concert.

Having built up an excellent reputation on the live circuit, Glimpse of a Sunrise is Rosa’s first foray into recording, laying down a selection of selfpenned tracks that the singer has described as “more than a music project but rather a statement of identity”. Smooth, slinky grooves permeate cuts like “Let U Go” and “U Can’t Love Me”, while lyrics inspired from her own life experiences bounce over the top. “Professional GF” is a pulsing blend of head-nodding riffs and nu-jazz slap-bass that is almost impossible not to jiggle your hips to, while opener “Breathe” is one of the catchiest tunes you’ll hear this year.
An ensemble cast of DJs and collaborators including Damian Saint (UK), Justin Dekker (Amsterdam), DJ Paulina (RUS), Glynn Tandi (UK), DJ Nina (Sweden), Martin Denev (Bulgaria), Morgan (France) have helped Rosa craft the tracks into a lively mix of live instrumentation and electro beats that fits the mood at almost any time of the day – indeed one of the album’s great strengths is that it can fits so easily into any situation. Beachside chill, sunset session or late night partying, Rosa’s music treads the perfect line. So if you’re in town make sure to keep up with the soul chanteuse through The Beat Mag listings, and keep an eye out for Glimpse of a Sunrise due to hit shelves early in the New Year.

This is a department store that hails all the way to us from Thailand, which is exactly the kind of regional cooperation and interoperability I appreciate as a consumer. Enjoy four floors of shopping at Grand Indonesia’s East Mall and treat yourself to a little bit of retail therapy, because even more Indonesian designers are accessible with the opening of the store: expect to see names like Jeffry Tan and Stella Rissa opening shop

Kendall Jenner as Estée Lauder’s New Face

Estée Lauder has secured itself a solid fanbase among working professionals and women in the 40+ age range, which is why their efforts in recent years to appeal to a younger crowd is just the next step in the brand’s horizontal growth. Part of their tactics have included a beautifully photographed and curated Instagram account, but they really kicked it up a gear when they announced that Kendall Jenner was going to the the newest addition to the family. YouTube and Facebook comments are an excellent gauge to determine the social climate, so here’s what we can conclude: a lot of people are happy that young Kendall is fronting the brand, but there are people who are also hugely upset by this decision. Most of the objections come from people who claim that that Kendall Jenner is only famous by association with a sister who is, in turn, famous for simply being famous — hardly the right credentials for someone to front an elite brand. A commenter at the Estée Lauder Facebook announcement page even offered a list of

alternatives: she claims Emma Watson, Chloe Moretz, Leighteon Meester, and Suki Waterhouse would have been better-suited to the brand’s image. But does it matter, really? Estée Lauder are probably trying to appeal to Kendall’s 9 million and 15 million followers on Twitter and Instagram; and guess what? It’s working. Yahoo reports that the weekend after the announcement, Estée Lauder followers on Instagram increased by 50,000, but whether or not those numbers will translate to sales is another matter. While I am surprised by the choice to cast Kendall Jenner as the brand’s newest face, I’m certainly not surprised by the reasons that are driving them to do it. But what do you think? Do you enjoy seeing her lit in that telltale soft focus, color-filtered world of Estée Lauder? Or would you gave preferred seeing another young woman spearhead the American brand’s efforts at becoming relevant among a younger target market?

BISTRO A pleasant, petite piece of Vietnam with a French accent.

oi Bistro is a French-Vietnamese restaurant that just opened last November. It’s located on Jalan Gunawarman, a buzzing area of eateries in the South of Jakarta. The place is small-ish, yet very cozy and intimate. The red façade greets a warm welcome. Once you stepped in, you’ll see that the interior is homey and the atmosphere warm. It’s hard to miss the striking giant hand-painted mural on the left side wall, while on the right hand side you’ll see bright yellow vintagestyled wallpaper with framed pictures of scenes of Vietnam. The menu offers a good mix of traditional Vietnamese and typical French fare. An order of Fresh Spring Rolls (45k) can be a good start to your culinary journey. The rolls are filled with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavors. You can choose either prawn or duck for the filling. For a more French type of starter, try

the Escargot Au Pesto (50k) – snails with pesto sauce – or the Wagyu Profiteroles (55k), a choux ball filled with wagyu beef and mozzarella cheese. But we really liked the Papaya Salad (45k); a flavorful mix of papaya and Vietnamese sauce, topped with some prawns and crushed peanuts.
Next up was the quintessential Vietnamese noodle soup, the Pho. We opted for the more basic option, the Boiled Beef (59k). The warm broth of the Pho Bo is rich and tasty. The noodle and beef mixed very well with the fresh bean sprouts and mint leaves. We added some lime juice and a little bit of chili paste

After all those savory dishes, refreshing mocktails like The Herbalist (30k) or Fruit And Jelly Mint (59k) are just the thing you need. Well, don’t forget the desserts here as well. May we suggest the Crepes Normandy (40k); classic crepes filled with apple and served with orange and anglaise sauce, or the Choux À La Crème (55k) with ice cream filling. But for a perfect coda to your meal, there’s nothing better than a sweet, intense Vietnamese Drip Coffee With Condensed Milk (25k).
into the bowl, and voila, we got ourselves a really nice comfort food! And Vietnam and France blended together deliciously in the Banh Mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich). The Roasted Lemongrass Chicken Sandwich (45k) made us happy campers.
The typically French Duck Confit (90k) was another noteworthy dish at Moi Bistro. The scrumptious duck leg is served on a bed of potato gratin and smothered with a bit of red wine sauce. And the accompaniment of orientalstyle vegetables gave it a nice bilateral balance.

HANGOVER Great bites at a club? You betcha!
T
he area of Kemang has never stopped evolving. There’s always something new and exciting going on. And that also applies for its choices of hangout spots, of course. Kemang does not lack for classic watering holes, and this is another fine addition for the area. Hangover opened its doors in August 2014. Although better known as a club, the food and beverage selections deserve a mention as well. And it’s the sort of place that suits the local executive crowd and lively expatriates just fine. We visited Hangover on an early Monday evening, after office hours. As you walk inside, the sizeable bar on the right side of the room provides a good welcome. The DJ booth at the other end is at the ready for merriments at a later hour. There’s also a more lounge-y area just a few steps up, for more intimate get-togethers. This intimate nook serves as a fine venue for business entertainment and cozy chats. But for now, the acoustic duo performed some nice rendition of recent Top 40 tunes and 90s alternative rock with equal ease. The casual menu is devised for sharing. And after a couple of beers, we ordered the Combo Platter (80k). This is the perfect finger food for you; a shareable dish for you and your mates that goes very well with your alcoholic beverage of choice, made out of tortilla chips, chicken wings, and sausages. It’s just a simple platter that gets right to the point. The Baby Chicken (65k) is also a good option.
Another wonderful light bite here is the Tokyo Skewer (63k). It’s a yakitori-style dish of chicken satays doused with teriyaki sauce. These satays are wonderful, but the real kicker here is the pickled cucumber and onion which provides a perfect accompaniment that balances the dish very nicely. If you feel like having something more substantial to munch on, go for the Sloppy Burger (96k) or the Chicken Burger (90k). The former has a juicy patty, smothered in a special homemade sauce, cheese, and served with pickles and some seasoned French fries on the side. It’s a bit messy, but it’s fun. And the latter has a katsu-type of deep fried chicken for you who prefer your white meat. Hangover has many signature tipples, but we have to say that we really dig a couple of their potent recommendations, the Zucari (145k) and the Bloody Virgin (158k). The greenish Zucari incorporates kyuri cucumber for a nice cooling effect, and the interestingly named strawberry-based Bloody Virgin is, well, red and passionate in look and taste. The place takes great pride in making guests feel at home. It’s the type of place worth checking out, whether for a lively party or just a relaxing hangout over a drink or two. It’s so much more than just black noodle!
Wmiitem is the brainchild of renowned Indonesian culinary expert, Mr. William Wongso. The name ‘mi item’ actually means ‘black noodle’. The unusual dark color of the squid ink-infused noodle has caught the attention of many foodies. Located in Kota Kasablanka Mall, Wmiitem is managed by Mr. Wongso’s daughter Olivia. The restaurant is pretty spacious. There are a couple of striking features here; the first being a mural of a giant squid (which you can’t miss), and the second is a huge table made out of a single piece of tree wood, ready to host your group’s get-together. Yes, the most well known dish here is the black noodle. But there are so much more than that at this eatery. For instance, we began our meal with a ‘pizza’ called Mixed Cheese Flaky (41.322). What separates this dish than your average pizza is the crust. It is nothing like your regular Italian favorite. It’s more like a biscuit with flaky texture. It’s a perfect appetizer to share.

FOOD But our favorite is hands down the Miitem Tuna Rica Rica (38.016). The blending of the black noodle with the tasty kick of the Menado-style sauce is just fabulous! Highly recommended! Black isn’t the only notable color here. There’s also the pink, beetroot-infused noodle like the Mi Pink Goreng Jawa (38.016). The typically Javanese fried noodle gets a bit of a makeover here. And why don’t you go green (color, that is) with the chili-infused fried rice called simply Nasi Goreng Ijo (38.016). They’re all not just pretty, but also very tasty. Other than the noodles and rice dishes, there are Western dishes as well. Try the Tasmanian Salmon (84.297) or the Rib Eye With French Fries (120.661). And sandwich specialists can go with the Chicken Cajun Roll (62.810) or the US Robberspierre (74,380). There’s even a Roti Prata with Comte Cheese (60,330), should you feel like it. As for dessert, you can get the sweet version of the flaky pizza like the Fruit (48,760) or White Chocolate (49,587), or pick the delightful Poffertjes (27.273), Vanilla Ice Cream Profiterole or Rum Baba (36.364 each). The specialty drinks such as the Pineapple Passion Honey or Orange Aloevera (31.045 respectively) are just what you need to refresh yourselves.
