Jakarta is back in action. After a rocky few months with the presidential elections dominating everyone’s thoughts and concerns of major protests developing through the claims of vote rigging from some parts of the community, it was gratifying to see the whole thing go out with a whimper on the last day when the final decision was announced. Politics is a sometime messy business but democracy has a way of

After what seemed like an eternity, we can all go out and start having a good time again. The bad news this week is that the fabled bule hangout club Red Square has closed in Arcadia Senayan. After its highs and lows over the past decade it finally shut its doors for the last time last Saturday night, August 31. How many big nights were down there over the years? They say it will be open again soon at another address but for now, no more Reds. But there’s plenty more going on around the city to keep you busy. Ideaz

IDEAZ are a great band and they are on the march to pop stardom. They are in the process of recording their first album and will release the first single from the album this month. the beat sat down with Ajay and Rendy to find out more about this band on the rise.

The Beat: Who is in the band? And how long have you been together? Ajay: The Band is Ideaz. We actually started off as a trio with two guitarist and me on vocals in May 2013. But since this May, we signed a contract with Universal Music Indonesia as a full band with a drummer and a bass player. Me Alfajar on vocals, Rendypuja and Hari Susanto on guitar, Danis Saputra on the bass and Yohandhoni on the drums. What’s the name mean? Rendy: Yeah, it’s from the English word Idea and we wanted to inspire the listeners with our ideas within the music. The Beat: How did you get signed by Universal? Ajay: At first a guy from Nagaswara recording company found us via our cover videos on Youtube, but things didn’t go really well. So we cut the contract and that was the time Universal music offered us another contract with them. At the time, we were invited to go to quite a lot of school and radio events. That’s why Universal became interested in us. Back then we were still a trio with me as the vocalist, Rendy and Hari on guitars. But we thought we needed to add something to our music. Therefore we invited Yohandhoni to be the drummer and Danis to be the bassist of our band. So what is happening now, have you recorded any new tracks? Ajay: Yes we have. So far, We’ve recorded about 10-15 songs. We are still preparing the album after our single. What’s the single? Ajay: The single will be released in September. Actually this single was released last year on 150 radio stations in Indonesia before we signed with Universal. And Universal saw this as an advantage, so they want to re-release the song with a bigger budget, more quality, more media coverage with better marketing. What’s the song about and who wrote the words and music? Rendy: The title is “Berakit-rakit”. It’s a song about a man who loves a girl - a simple story but everyone has felt it. The guy falls in love with this girl and he does all this sweet talk as in the song lyrics to convince the girl to come back. It was written by me and Alfajar. Where have you been playing lately and is there any tour coming soon? Rendy: Lately we have been busy playing at some local events. Like last month we performed in The Beat Room at Fez Kemang and soon we are scheduled to tour all the radio stations in West Java. Are there many opportunities for original bands to play in Jakarta? Rendy: Not so many and the most of them want us to play for free. Damn, it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock’n’roll.

President

Yudhoyono has delivered his final state budget and led his final Independence Day flag-raising ceremony at the Merdeka Palace, yet his successor has still to be sworn in. After the most bitterly fought and controversial presidential election campaign in the nation’s history, it has only been possible recently to refer to President-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo by that title with certainty as the election result was bitterly contested and the argument only resolved in late August. This has left the nation feeling distinctly that it is neither here nor there, although the uncertainty has not deterred the presidentelect from forming a transition team to address the most crucial policy changes that he would like to start putting in place once he’s inaugurated next month.

e peopl % of

Equally, Deputy Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama still awaits the moment that he can officially be declared the boss once the current governor, Jokowi, has taken up his new position. At least there should be a smooth transition when the old governor is succeeded by the new as both worked together on their vision for the capital, even if the pair may be quite different, temperamentally. As last month’s magazine noted, the city’s nightlife reawakens after a month-long hibernation during Ramadan, with many venues renovated or even rebranded during the break, and some entirely new ones on the block competing for attention.

The “out with the old, in with the new” feeling is even stronger this time as Stadium, the grande dame of the clubbing scene, has closed (permanently?) and many young pretenders will vie for the coveted pole position as Jakarta’s reputation as one of the region’s prime nightlife venues continues to grow. In parallel with the clubs, Jakarta now has a wider range of bars, cafes and restaurants than ever before, which cater for an increasingly discerning customer base. Take the case of bars: at one time the choice was either upmarket hotel bars or more seedy downtown drinking holes. Now you’re spoilt for choice, with stand-alone whisky/ cigar bars, lounges, rooftop bars, sports bars and bars-cum-restos scattered around town, in addition to the types mentioned earlier. As the weeks roll on towards Jokowi’s inauguration, the feeling is that one chapter in the nation’s history is closing, while the anticipation of a new era of hope and expectation of better things to come grows stronger by the day. “Magabu” is an acronym for “makan gaji buta”, the term coined for when one does things other than being productive in the office, especially browsing online. While the top magabu online activity is to stalk friends on social media, a new rising activity is to find discounts - on just about anything in websites such as Groupon.co.id, Lakupon.com, or Livingsocial. co.id. By nature everybody loves hunting for discounts, and now these sites are doing the hard work of finding and archiving sweet deals. During a certain time limit, an offer would appear on the website and a customer simply need to register, purchase a deal via online or transfer payment, and print the voucher. What’s interesting is that the number of vouchers sold is visible, somewhat an indication whether the vast majority of customers consider it as a good deal or not. Some never pass selling 10 vouchers, while others go over 1,000 purchases. Before these sites appeared, Jakartans only relied on their credit cards for any means of sweet deals. Now the floodgates are open: there are so many slashed priced unique products and services most of us probably don’t need but are too hard to resist (six-piece standing spice rack anyone?). Nowadays when a group

of friends want to go out for dinner, the first question that comes to mind is not “where do we want to eat?”, rather “what’s the restaurant with the best promotion offer?” Although not all of the deals are enticing, the seasoned bargain hunter can sense whether a discount is the real deal, or if the price has been marked up then discounted. Just remember, when considering to buy a voucher, make sure to read the fine print. Sometimes a voucher buying period is not the same with its redeem period. Then there are times when a voucher can only be used at certain outlets (in the case of a multi-location product or service), or the voucher can only be used for certain options on the menu. If you are not certain about something, simply call the merchant (their phone number is usually made available on the voucher info web page) to voice any doubts you might have. Aside from the familiar brands, these sites are also promoting small mom and pop shops all over Jakarta. Nita, a dentist, also used a discount site to promote her dental office. She says that the site takes a large slice of the sale of a voucher, which at first felt like a tough deal considering she was already offering her services at a fairly big discount to the end customer. However she is satisfied considering it has grown her customer database: there are some of her “voucher” customers that come back for other dental treatments, this time without any vouchers and even bringing other members of their family.

FEATURE TBJ: You were already a famous model, why did you put your mind to being a DJ? Which one do you enjoy more: being in front of the camera or behind the decks? Tenashar: Because at the end of the day, my passion is music. Being a DJ, I am able to live out my passion every day of my life. TBJ: Obviously making it into the DJ Mag top 100 is no easy feat. How do you think you broke into the elite group? Tenashar: I owe my success to my fan base in Asia who love EDM music and with the guidance of Robb, my manager, I was given the opportunity to compete amongst the worlds best.

you’re more eye candy than substance? Tenashar: Well then I guess those critics never did their homework. TBJ: Tell us about the crowd in Colosseum, how is it similar, and at the same time unique to the crowds other clubs of the “same level”whatever your interpretation of the “same level” might be. Are you a monthly resident DJ in another club somewhere else? Tenashar: The crowd in Colosseum radiates with immense energy and truly enjoy EDM. They are one of my favourite crowds. My other residency is in Avalon in Singapore.

TBJ: We googled to try to find the meaning of Tenashar, but couldn’t seem to find an answer. What does “Tenashar” mean? Tenashar: Tenashar is actually my real name; my godmother gave me the name. She was a creative artist and created a unique name for me. TBJ: Are you in a relationship? Feel free to say no for the sake of not breaking the hearts of thousands of your fans! What kind of a guy are you looking for to be with you? Tenashar: Yes I am in a relationship, I’m married to my music... What type of guy am I looking for, at this time I’m too focussed on my music to be in any relationship. TBJ: To the untrained eye, being on the DJ booth is as simple as pushing the “play” button. What really goes on up there? Tenashar: The art of mixing is something that has taken me years to master and there is always room to improve. On top of that you need to be able to understand and flow with the crowd and you need insane energy. TBJ: What do you have to say to critics that don’t take you seriously as a DJ, that think

TBJ: What is your definition of the “perfect party”? When and where did you experience this? Tenashar: I honestly have a perfect party every gig I play, when I see my fans so happy, I am happy, it doesn’t matter where I am in the world.

CLASSICAL

Homage to Our Music Heroes By Erza S.T.

34

www.beatmag.com

CLASSICAL

The

day we respect the red and white flag to celebrate the country’s independence might have already passed. However the celebration to pay homage to our national heroes continues, including in this upcoming concert by Jakarta Concert Orchestra and Batavia Madrigal Singers. For quite some years now, the Jakarta Concert Orchestra (JCO) and the award-winning Batavia Madrigal Singers (BMS) have been annually celebrating Indonesia’s independence day under a concert called: “Simfoni Untuk Bangsa 2014” (Symphony for the Nation 2014). At this concert, which seems to have become a tradition, JCO and BMS under charismatic conductor Avip Priatna will entertain us with various Indonesian music from classical to folk songs in a more refreshing music arrangement. This year is also special as they celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Ismail Marzuki and 80year anniversary of Mochtar Embut – two of our most renowned Indonesian music heroes. Mochtar Embut’s famous composition “VariaIbukota” (The Capital Variation) – a compilation of famous Betawinese folk songs was chosen to open this concert by JCO followed with his happy songs for children will be presented by the Resonanz Children Choir. A vocal ensemble called Shantell was also invited to be one of the stars on this concert. Another brainchild of Avip Priatna with Paulus Yoedianto as the coach and conductor, Shantell Vocal Ensemble consists of a group of amateur women with various backgrounds and ages. After over eight years, this vocal ensemble grew to be one of the best female vocal groups with a high artistic level. The group has done independent concerts and also successfully won international competitions such as the 3rd Voyage of Songs International Choir Festival in Thailand, International Choir Competition

in Prague; and recently achieved the first prize in the folk song category at Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod last July. In this coming concert, Shantell Vocal Ensemble is trusted to perform two famous folk songs from Maluku and South Borneo. CD REVIEW

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Wonderful Wow

Hypnotic Eye

Worthy

After a career spanning over 40 years that has produced some 15 albums, most musicians would be pretty content to sit back and let the royalty cheques keep rolling in. Not Tom Petty though, who seems to have rediscovered his form after the middling blues-rock of 2010’s Mojo.

While admittedly there are a couple of flops - “Fault Lines”, despite its uptempo urgency sounds a wee bit outdated, and there’s the odd clunky lyric to be found; “meet me tonight/on the red river/where the water is clear and cold” (err, wouldn’t it be red, Tom?), there is much to enjoy from Hypnotic Eye.

Can Carry” – perhaps the two album tracks that come closest to Petty’s former glories.

Teaming up once again with his long time backing group The Heartbreakers and recording at the band’s LA rehearsal space, Petty has delivered a solid collection of tunes that have a more raw, in-the-studio vibe. Stylistically there’s nothing new or particularly inventive, and overall the album lacks any of the kind of standout hits (“Learning to Fly”, “American Girl” to name just a couple) that made Petty’s reputation in the 80s and 90s.

Now 63, Petty’s reedy voice has changed little over the years, and aside from Dylan is still one of the most assured and recognizable whines in music. It might not be pretty but it oozes authenticity, especially on opener “American Plan B”, where Petty confides to us that, “like a fool, I’m bettin’ on happiness”. Particular highlights are the jazz shuffle and lilting guitars of “Full Grown Boy”, and the freewheeling standouts “U Get Me High” and “All You

Worthless Worm Fodder

Despite its faults, there is enough here to keep everything feeling fresh and new, thanks largely to the reliability of The Heartbreakers – Mike Campbell’s riffs still sound as crisp as they did on 1985’s Southern Accents, and Ron Blair’s bass keeps everything moving purposefully along. The upshot is that with the Heartbreakers on this kind of form, it’s brought out the best in the boss too. While it may be unlikely that Hypnotic Eye will win over a new generation of fans with its classic rock stylings, Petty devotees will delight in the fact that he’s back to doing what he does best. Is it Real? L

ast year’s Jakarta Fashion Week was a pleasure and a pain to go through. I thoroughly enjoyed the excitement and buzz of attending and writing about fashion shows in the country’s premier fashion week, but it did not come without a cost — and the cost that I am talking about here is physical discomfort. Griss, myself, and our beloved contributors spent innumerable hours on our feet, walking around from post to post to watch shows, attend press conferences, and stake out a spot for a wifi signal. As far as my feet were concerned, it was a nightmare, even when I was wearing flats. This is why I would sneak out of the Fashion Tent and into Senayan City Mall when I had time between shows — in these happy moments, I would go ahead and treat myself to an hour of reflexology. The alternative medicinal art of refloxology basically lies in the theory that different zones of the feet correspond to different parts of the body. For example: if you feel pain when the tips of your toes are engaged, that may mean you’re having sinus issues. In theory, when the pain dissipates after the massage, so should your sinus problems. Apparently, the same zonal theory applies to pimples and where they fall on the face. So the theory posits that if you are experiencing a breakout in the area between your eyebrows, you may be having liver issues. The solution would be to drink more water and eliminate alcohol and fatty foods from your diet; breakouts in the corners of you lips may mean you need to implement for fiber into your diet. But remember: as with all alternative medicines, there is no hard science behind face mapping that legitimizes its claims. Use it only for fun, and to determine the cause behind one-off zits and not serious acne breakouts. Remember to see a doctor if your acne problem persists or worsens despite your shelling out regular treatment. Map away!

emember the stunning collaboration between Bateeq and Peggy Hartanto that premiered at this year’s Fashion Nation? Well that collection is ready to go — into your own closet, that is. A new Bateeq store opened at Plaza Indonesia, and key among the collections was this “so-obvious-it’s-brilliant” collaboration between a brand that wants to redefine the way batik is worn with a young Indonesian designer who has consistently produced striking collections with her creativity. Fans of the Taiwan style scene will be happy to know that iRoo has opened a second store, this time at Plaza Senayan. This opening is hot on the heels of of the opening of the first iRoo store at Pacific Place back in November 2013. The opening of a second store in less than ten months shows the pace at which the brand is keen on penetrating the Jakarta market, while hoping to hawk its “affordable high quality clothing” that is, essentially, luxe fast fashion. www.iroo.co.id

Back to Bath Basics:

Natural Soaps from Indonesia The basic bar soap is a bath product that I never really cared for, until I ran into — and fell in love with - these two Indonesian-made brands. Both are rooted in a strong philosophy that respects natural ingredients for products that are free of preservatives and colorants. First off, a herbal soap from a Surabaya brand called Keyra: this particular soap is its Red Rice Bran variant, which works to help give you bright, radiant skin. There are four other variants in addition to this one (blackseed, honey, pomegranate, and mangosteen skin), and all are made without preservatives, detergents, or colorants. Listed on the back of this economical (and environmentally sound!) cardboard box packaging are the ingredients, which are as follows: Ingredients: coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, sodium hydroxide, red rice bran extract, fragrance. I love how rich in oils this particular soap is, but I do wish that they listed what exactly goes into the “fragrance.” When you the word “fragrance” in an ingredients list, it most likely means “artificial fragrance,” a laboratory-synthesized chemical that can be made up of anything from tree bark to animal urine. But since Keyra promises sticking to an “all-natural” philosophy, I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that “fragrance” just means a scented oil of some sort. Next up, I ran into a bar soap from a Balibased brand called Sensatia Botanicals. Their

by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com “About Us” page mentions that their “product development goal has been to always use fresh, 100% natural, basic ingredients you know and understand, ingredients that you might find in your mothers kitchen.” Sold. I love the perfect square shape of the soap, and the debossed logo and tree add a nice touch too. Sensatia Botanicals soaps are handmade in Bali and sold all over the world. Their complete catalog includes a very impressive range bath, body, and skincare products at very reasonable prices too. The Tea Tree & Yellow Clay soap includes the everpotent Australian tea tree oil “…[to help] fight infections of all kinds and helps clear the skin.” The yellow clay, meanwhile, serves to draw out impurities in skin and help stimulate circulation. The product ingredients are as follows: Ingredients: coconut oil, water, palm oil, sodium hyrdroxide, cocoa seed butter, tea tree oil, kukui nut oil, kaolin, yellow clay. There’s a very clearly-labeled “best before” date to hammer home the idea that this is a perishable product derived of natural ingredients. The scent on this soap is sharp — it smells like an antibacterial, which I’m putting down to the tea tree and doesn’t bother me too much. I’m going to be abandoning liquid soaps in favor of lovingly-handmade bar soaps like these for a while, I think. How about you?

Lipstick Monday: Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato by: dhnshrtn femaledaily.com

L

isten friends, I wasn’t kidding when I said one of my favorite products from the Breezy Summer Look makeup tutorial was the Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato. Love at first sight is real, yo. I ran out and bought a tube as soon as learned more about the product. I love the sleek minimalist packaging, the adorable name, the variety of shades, and its highly-pigmented color factor — everything! You see the thing is, I’m currently in the middle of a trial separation from my collection of bold lip colors (say it ain’t so!), and have been turning to nude/ neutral shades for comfort. If you’ve been reading me for a while, then you’d know by now that the only nude I’ve ever had was the Shiseido Perfect Rouge Lipstick in PK 303, and even it only sees action inside my apartment on lazy weekends. [We can only imagine.Ed] But then I was feeling adventurous and tried out the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Istanbul. I got plenty of positive feedback when I wore it, and I genuinely

52

www.beatmag.com

enjoyed the low-key sheerness of the brand new Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Shine. When I browsed the Shu Uemura at Sogo Plaza Senayan for a new nude shade to bring back home, I exercised a LOT of self-control to keep myself from buying its gorgeous red, fuchsia, and bright coral. What I came back home with was the Tint in Gelato in CR 04 Spiced Orange. Despite the name, this shade is actually more pinkish-orange that dries on the lips as a semi-matte. It glides on smooth and a little sticky like lip gloss, but even dries out with a semi-matte finish. It does fairly well in the Lipstick vs Liquids Challenge, leaving behind a stain that resembles lip gloss more than lipstick. I ate lunch with it, and did not need to reapply until about an hour or two later. The Tint in Gelato is a product that works as a lip and cheek stain — when used as a cheek stain, it gave my cheeks a healthy flush that lasted for several solid hours. I will almost definitely be purchasing more Tint in Gelato to discover more shades!

With the atmosphere raising the bar for finer dining, the mouth-watering innovative dishes heighten the dining experience even further. Akira Back’s distinctive creations impeccably fuse traditional flavors of Japan and Korea with some Western twist. Starters like the Miso Soup (35k) and Tuna Tataki Salad (90k) represent security themselves. But he took it up a notch with a Cold Shared dish, the Tuna Pizza (195k); thinly-sliced tuna over thin and crispy dough, with truffle oil and ponzu mayo, blending very nicely to elevate this dish. A must-try! Welcome to a new dining gem that’s setting the culinary scene abuzz! Korean-born, Colorado-raised Akira Back is a chef who has won numerous international awards and recognitions. The Hirame Carpaccio (170k) is another dish worthy of your attention. The thinly sliced hirame (flat fish) is doused with tasty nanbazu sauce, and served with chiffonade shisho herb, radish, and crispy shallots. Next up, a dish from the Hot Shared list; the AB Tacos (155k). If you think you know your tacos, think again! They may be smaller than your usual Mexican favorite, but the Korean-inspired

Wagyu kalbi and the Japanese tomato ponzu sauce are just incredible. We savored each crunch of the taco with absolute gusto. It’s a fiesta of flavors in your mouth! Another excellent dish was The Seared Foie Gras (350k); the rich and scrumptious foie gras was generously placed on top of unagi croquette, augmented with kochujang miso, and spiced acacia honey. As for the main course, you can go with the Lamb Chop (450k) or Grilled Salmon (280k) on offer. But for us, the prize goes to the 48 Hours Wagyu Short Rib (450k)! The premium meat was so juicy and tender it just melts in your mouth. Simply sublime. The sizable bar is located on the left side of the restaurant, and the bar staff have concocted some lovely drinks. There are mocktails like the Banilla (45k), made from banana, homemade vanilla extract, apple, and toasted almonds. And don’t miss cocktails like the Doragon Boru (100k); a blend of lychee, red dragon fruit, citrus vodka, raspberry rum, lemon splash, and apple juice, or the It’s Chow Thyme (120k), made

with Fuji apple, elderflower liquor, thyme, and homemade limoncello. The private rooms are also a dazzling feature of the restaurant worth checking out. They are perfect to host your stylish parties or gettogethers. Akira Back offers a sophisticated yet relaxed dining indulgence. SAKE+

Take a culinary detour to Japan at this new place.

Jl. Senopati has become one of the addresses for Jakarta’s foodies. And nestled amid the hustle and bustle of traffic outside, Sake+ could be the perfect respite. While there are numerous Japanese joints in Jakarta, this place has carved out a niche. Opened about a month ago, the good people of Vin+ are bringing the Japanese rice wine to the forefront this time. As you step inside, you’ll be amazed at the extensive variety of sake on show. The front area feels like a sake gallery. The staff will gladly help you make a choice, whether to pair it with your meal, or just to enjoy the sake by itself. The first floor is more for lounging, while the

second floor is where the dining area is located. Sake+ melds a modern Japanese aesthetic with a sensual lounge vibe. The interior features a soft white, taupe, and pale wood accents with a touch of vintage style. There’s one side of the wall that’s strikingly decorated using real kimono fabric. The expert mixologists here have whipped up a brilliant sake-based drink menu. The Kyuri+ (120k); a mix of dry sake, gin, casis syrup, strawberry, lime juice, and presented with hollowed Kyuri cucumber as glasses. Drinking from it gives a unique sensation. Another favorite of ours is the delightful NightJar (100k), made with dry sake, gin, elderflower, pomegranate, and cassis syrup. We also tried a refreshing mocktail named Horenzo San (40k), made with Japanese spinach, apple juice, and passion syrup. The food here is rich with traditional Japanese cuisine, with some twists at the right places. You’ll find the usual Japanese favorites like Sushi, Sashimi, Udon and Ramen noodles, but there are also more specialized fare like Robatayaki (grilled) dishes.

FOOD

We started with the hearty Tosa Age Tofu (55k); a nice blend of fried silky tofu with mushroom sauce, and grated radish. Then we moved on to the Satsumaage (35k each). Think of it as a Japanese otak-otak or fish cakes, but here they have 3 kinds: plain, with mushroom, and with edamame. But the one dish that blew us away was the Eihire (50k) or grilled stingray fin. Although it doesn’t look like much, the dish is surprisingly addicting! At first we thought that it was dried squid, but biting further into it, it has a certain je ne sais quoi we just can’t explain. Highly recommended! For a heavier fare, the Tenzaru Soba Set (75k) is a sure bet; cold noodles served with tempura, kobachi, chawan mushi, and dessert. A perfect blend of cold and hot, and then some.

After a recent repositioning, it is ready for a more contemporary crowd. The place looks revitalized, as we had the pleasure of visiting it recently. The bar and lounge area greet you as you walk inside, a perfect place to meet and mingle over cocktails and finger foods. A large wine cabinet is also at the ready for oenophiles to peruse and enjoy a glass or two. Walk past the cozy private room, and you’ll see a nice area with a visible open kitchen where all the action is. There’s a wood fire oven at the ready, too. Pizza, anyone? The al fresco terrace is another outstanding attribute at Riva. Shaded by the trees and overlooking the swimming pool, this could be a perfect spot for a well-earned break from your busy daily schedule. The extensive menu offers something for everyone, covering all corners of the globe. We started with some Small Plates that are definitely big in taste. The Moroccan Lamb 737-2X9 Surveiller (95k), served with fresh tomato garlic and basil sauce was a great choice, as was the Riva Spring Roll (65k); filled with chicken prawn and foie gras, and complemented with a tasty blue cheese dip. For a closer-to-home taste, try the Deep Fried Garlic Prawns (115k). And we also love the Classic French Onion Soup (75k); it’ll make you all warm and fuzzy inside. As for the main course, the Duck Magret (145k) is wonderful; roasted duck breast with hearty mushroom and parsley risotto. Staying with the duck

FOOD theme, the kitchen brought us a daily special; the Riva Gourmet Pizza (95k), topped with roast duck and hoisin sauce. The wood fire oven cooked the pizza perfectly, and the Asian-inspired duck go together nicely on top of the Italian favorite! At Riva, you shouldn’t pass getting some things from the grill. The premium Sher Wagyu beef, a 400+ days grain fed full blood Wagyu with level 4 or 5 marbling, is wonderful here. Our order of 200g Sher Wagyu Sirloin (470k) was so delicious; grilled perfectly to lock in the juice and tenderness. And the Wood Oven French Cut Veal Rack (350k) is also one to consider. Whatever kind of steak you’re having at Riva, it’s worth every penny! Don’t pass on the wonderful drinks here. The Riva Classic Mojito (120k) is always a sure bet, but we suggest try the Riva Cocktail Ice Tea (120k); a wonderful concoction of tea, vodka, cinnamon, honey, and ginger beer! Mocktails like the Sangria Ice Tea (50k) is just as nice. Make room for delightful desserts, because the Mango Pannacotta (75k) and Chocolate Flourless Cake (75k) are not to be missed. Still a consistent option for quality fare, the revitalized Riva will surely win the hearts of many more patrons. Highly recommended. (Budi Iskandar)
